PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF TRAVEL

Land Rover has revealed a long-term global partnership with Richard Branson’s pioneering commercial spaceline, Virgin Galactic. Demonstrating their shared vision of pioneering spirit, technological innovation and sense of adventure, the ground breaking partnership was recently announced in New York against the backdrop of SpaceShipTwo, the world’s first commercial passenger carrying spacecraft, together with Land Rover’s new Discovery Vision Concept vehicle.

(

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF TRAVEL

(

Land Rover’s first act as exclusive partner was to bring a unique full-size replica of SpaceShipTwo VSS Enterprise to New York, where it joined the remarkable British Airways Concorde and its namesake Space Shuttle Enterprise upon the Intrepid. Like the Space Shuttle, SpaceShipTwo is the first of a revolutionary fleet of reusable human spacecraft. Having the vehicles in one place for the first time provided a powerful symbol of human ingenuity and the adventurous spirit of exploration and discovery.

T

his unexpected partnership will see Land Rover vehicles become part of daily life for the Virgin Galactic team and for all ‘Future Astronauts’, the space experience will now begin with Land Rover as they arrive in New Mexico for training, and continue to the moment they drive from the space terminal building to the waiting spaceship. Land Rover will base a fleet of vehicles at the Virgin Galactic test centre in the Mojave Desert, California and at its astounding operational New Mexico base, Spaceport America. The exciting announcement was revealed in dramatic fashion on board the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, a former aircraft carrier anchored on the Hudson River (New York).

Revealed alongside SpaceShipTwo was Land Rover’s Discovery Vision Concept, a vision of Land Rover’s future family of Discovery vehicles. The concept car previews dynamic new design language and an array of world first technologies. The vehicle uses augmented reality technology to display a ‘see-through’ view of the terrain ahead, making the front of the car ‘virtually’ invisible from inside the cabin. Gesture Control allows you to open the doors, operate the indicators or turn on the headlamps simply by moving your hand, while Laser Referencing projects visible markings, symbols and imagery onto the ground to aid low speed or tricky manoeuvres. More than 200 VIP guests witnessed the two game-changing vehicles, which were revealed against a stunning Manhattan background and an awe-inspiring projection mapping sequence.

Owned by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and aabar Investments PJS, Virgin Galactic is on track to be the world’s first commercial spaceline. To date, the company has accepted over $85 million in deposits from more than 700 individuals, which is approximately 20% more than the total number of people who have ever gone to space. The new spaceship (SpaceShipTwo, VSS Enterprise) and carrier craft (WhiteKnightTwo, VMS Eve) have both been developed for Virgin Galactic’s vehicle fleet by Mojave-based Scaled Composites. Founded by Burt Rutan, Scaled developed SpaceShipOne, which in 2004 claimed the $10 million Ansari X Prize as the world’s first privately developed manned spacecraft. Virgin Galactic’s new vehicles, which will be manufactured by The Spaceship Company in Mojave, Calif., share much of the same basic design, but are being built to carry six customers, or the equivalent scientific research payload, on suborbital space flights. The vehicles will allow an out-of-the-seat, zerogravity experience with astounding views of the planet from the black sky of space for tourist astronauts and a unique microgravity platform for researchers. The VSS Enterprise and VMS Eve test flight program is well under way, leading to Virgin Galactic commercial operations, which will be based at Spaceport America in New Mexico.

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF TRAVEL

Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Galactic said: “We couldn’t be more delighted to have Land Rover join us on our incredible journey. It is hard to think of a brand which is more synonymous with exploration and adventure. The safety and engineering excellence of Land Rover’s vehicles, which have been the stuff of legend for more than 65 years, are attributes which also lie at the heart of Virgin Galactic. We look forward to crossing the final frontier together and to a long and fruitful partnership.” Phil Popham, Group Marketing Director of Jaguar Land Rover said: “This is a marriage of

(

two of Britain’s most iconic brands who celebrate shared values, a pioneering spirit and a true sense of adventure. Not only do we both share the same long-term vision to enable mankind to explore, but we also want to develop this partnership to inspire others. From our tens of thousands of employees and customers to schools and colleges, motivating more young people to pursue careers in engineering, science, technology and math - and explore new ways of travelling for future generations. Land Rover’s heart beats ‘above and beyond’; we are pioneers on land and Virgin Galactic is the pioneer of space. It’s a very special match of brands with a shared vision.”

Both brands run significant and highly regarded community relations and STEM education programmes, which encourage young people to aspire to a future in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and together see the huge potential to develop this partnership to inspire others and motivate more young people to pursue careers in these vitally important fields. As the Discovery Vision Concept was on di-

splay at the New York Auto Show, the SpaceShipTwo remained on display at Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum for the public to view from 15th to the 22nd April. It sat alongside other game changing artefacts including the first ever space shuttle Enterprise, the prototype NASA orbiter that paved the way for the space shuttle programme and the record-breaking and revolutionary supersonic passenger airliner, the Concorde. the 2.4-liter MultiAir®2Tigershark I-4 engine. The addition of more gear ratios reduces the frequency of speed changes associated with upshifting and downshifting – fluctuations that thwart fuel savings and undermine the driving experience. The high-tech transmission dispenses power smoothly for elevated refinement. Such performance is made possible because the ratio steps between its gears are smaller than those of other transmissions. Two world-class engine choices power the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 sedan. The proven, award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 generates a best-in-class 295 horsepower as well as 262 lb.-ft. of torque. The new Tigershark 2.4-liter MultiAir2 four-cylinder engine produces 184 horsepower, 173 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers excellent estimated

fuel economy of 35 mpg highway. The new standardTigershark engine delivers fuel economy improvements of 13 percent, horsepower improvements of 6 percent and torque improvements of 10 percent compared with the outgoing four-cylinder engine. A new available sport mode in the 2015 200 provides a spirited driving experience by modulating steering, throttle and shifting inputs, electronic stability control, Adaptive Cruise Control Plus and all-wheel drive for a driving experience customers will look forward to. The 2015 Chrysler 200 offers an available best-in-class all-wheel-drive system, which features a segment-first fully disconnecting rear axle that improves fuel economy by operating in front-wheel drive when all-wheel drive is not needed. The all-wheel-drive

system features a one-speed power transfer unit (PTU) and uniquely disconnects and reconnects the rear axle – automatically and seamlessly – as needed and at any speed. The disconnecting rear axle disconnects at both the PTU and rear drive module, which improves fuel economy by reducing parasitic loss when all-wheel drive is not needed. Owners of the new Chrysler 200 will appreciate an innovative rotary e-shift dial that replaces the traditional console shifter. The rotary e-shift enables intuitive operation with a direct and confident feel. The convenient, center-mounted, easy-to-operate system provides total control of the sophisticated nine-speed transmission. The 2015 Chrysler 200 is the first mid-size sedan to utilize Chrysler Group’s Compact

U.S.-wide (CUS-wide) platform, the basis for smooth on-road performance. The new body structure, including laser-brazed roof welds, delivers increased torsional stiffness, resulting in a more connected driving experience. The 2015 Chrysler 200’s chassis was engineered to deliver sporty European handling dynamics and steering precision with ride and comfort characteristics tuned for North American roads, resulting in excellent handling for the driver with maximum comfort for both the driver and passengers. Safety and Security The all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 is a showcase of advanced safety and security technology, offering a comprehensive array of driver warning and assist systems and state-of-theart occupant restraints.

triking exterior touches, high-quality detailing for the interior and exclusive light alloy wheels are all available. Each emphasises the distinctive character of the new MINI and the personal style of its driver. Just as the third generation MINI is new from the ground up, so the range of Original MINI Accessories has been completely redesigned. The much-loved classics are still there – including roof graphics, exterior mirror caps and additional headlamps – but there is also something new and innovative. It’s a design concept for the exterior and interior made up of four MINI Design Lines, called Vivid Green, Speedwell Blue, John Cooper Works Pro and Essential Black. For the first time, Original MINI Accessories are precisely matched in design and colour. It means the new MINI can be fitted with a whole host of optional extras, each available in up to four design lines. The pioneering approach, ensuring a co-ordinated design to the outside and inside of the car, applies to textile and all-weather floor mats, sun protection elements, door sill cover strips, exterior and interior mirror caps, roof and side graphics, side indicator surrounds, key lanyards, protective covers and luggage compartment items. Vivid Green: gives accessories a youthful, fresh look with striking dashes of rich green against a black background. Speedwell Blue: adds a touch of sporty flair and a sense of tradition, thanks to a reinterpretation of the red, white and blue of the Union Jack, combined with a warm brown tone.

John Cooper Works Pro: reflects a passion for racing with a vibrant chequered flag in black, red and grey. Essential Black: an understated and elegant design that’s pared back to a chequered pattern which runs diagonally. Always a popular choice with customers of previous generation MINIs, were the mirror caps, both internal and external. These are now available for the new MINI in the design lines Vivid Green, Speedwell Blue and John Cooper Works Pro. They are also in Union Jack, Black Jack, Chequered Flag Black/ Grey, Chequered Flag Black/White and John Cooper Works Pro Carbon. BMW Vision Future Luxury

LUXURY DRIVEN BY DESIGN AND INNOVATION

“Innovative technology and modern luxury have always been an important part of BMW’s brand DNA - says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design - we use visionary concept vehicles like the BMW Vision Future Luxury to show where we may be going with these themes in the future, and to give us new inspiration and motivation. The BMW Vision Future Luxury – with its innovative technologies and with meticulous precision and quality in every detail – takes our thinking on modern luxury a logical stage further.”

BMW Vision Future Luxury

(

P

resented at the recent Beijing Motor Show, the BMW Vision Future Luxury furnishes a long-term outlook on the perception of modern luxury for the BMW brand. It stands for a forward-looking fusion of exclusivity and innovation, for a driving experience that is at once emotional and exclusive. All this is conveyed through the outstanding exterior and interior design of the BMW Vision Future Luxury along with its innovative technology, a pioneering lightweight engineering concept and a seamlessly integrated user interface and driving experience that caters optimally to the needs of all occupants. The precise design of the BMW Vision Future Luxury allows its cutting-edge features – such as BMW Laserlights and organic LEDs (OLEDs), seamlessly integrated BMW ConnectedDrive functions, innovative aerodynamics and sophisticated lightweight engineering – to be experienced at an emotional level.

CGM

For the first time on a BMW the rear lighting is provided by organic LEDs, paving the way for a completely new treatment of the typical BMW L-shaped lights. The BMW Vision Future Luxury’s L-shaped rear lights comprise a large number of small, likewise L-shaped OLEDs. An organic LED consists of wafer-thin organic semiconductor layers positioned between two electrodes. The light-emitting polymer layer is only approx. 400 nanometers thick, making it roughly 400 times thinner than a human hair. Organic LEDs are not only extremely thin, as well as flexible, they also produce very uniform illumination over their entire surface. Due to their very thin dimensions, and since they do not require reflectors in order to produce the desired broad light dispersion, they open up completely new ways of using light in and around the vehicle.

Around 443,000 ŠKODA 1000 MBs were produced between April 1964 and August 1969, of which more than half were exported even as far as New Zealand and Australia. The ŠKODA 1000 MB is one of the most popular classics of the Czech brand nowadays. MB stands for Mladá Boleslav, the location of the ŠKODA brand’s headquarters; the number 1000 for the displacement of the one-litre engine. The 1000 MB was offered in many versions: in addition to the basic version, from 1966 there were versions with increased performance, and the elegant two-door 1000 MBX – a particularly popular model among collectors today. To construct the new model, ŠKODA built a completely new plant in Mladá Boleslav in close proximity to the existing factory buildings in the early 60s. The new facilities included the most modern equipment housed in a total of more than 40 production halls and other buildings. 13 kilometres of new roads

were built in total, in addition to ten kilometres of railway tracks being re-laid and a new switch yard was built on the 80 acre site. The new plant also had its own smelting plant. Advanced engine technology The ŠKODA 1000 MB was one of the most advanced vehicles of its time. Developed under the internal name NOV (nový osobní vüz = New Passenger Vehicle), ŠKODA engineers opted for a completely new vehicle concept with a rear engine, rear-wheel drive, independent suspension and unibody construction. At the same time, the ŠKODA 1000MB set standards in terms of innovative engines and drive technology. In developing the engine, ŠKODA was the first European car manufacturer to utilize aluminium die-casting in engine block production. The four-speed gearbox case was also produced using this construction method. For this, ŠKODA drew on a method originally developed in 1922 by the Czech engineer Josef Polák; the main advantage of which was the significantly reduced production time. The water-cooled OHV four-cylinder engine, located behind the rear axle, delivered 27 kW (37 HP). The engine capacity was 988 ccm3. Modern engine technology in conjunction with the low weight of only 755 kg ensured tremendously economical fuel consumption of only 7 to 8 l/100 km. The top speed was 120 km/h. In 1968, the engine power was increased to 32 kW (43 PS). Prior to the start of series production, the manufacturer subjected the ŠKODA 1000 MB to extensive endurance tests. A total of fifty test vehicles covered 1.6 million kilometres in 1962. These included drives at extreme sub-zero tempe-

Elegant saloon with plenty of space and comfort In addition to its modern technology, the ŠKODA 1000 MB signalled significant progress in terms of the brand’s design. The classic three-box design was typical of the 1960s. The sweeping lines and gentle curves, and the circular headlamps elegantly set into the fenders, the originally-shaped taillights, the panoramic rear window and the curved air intakes were among the distinctive identifying features of the new ŠKODA model. The filler neck was located in the right front fender, cleverly hidden under the hinged ŠKODA emblem. With its compact dimensions (4.17 m long, 1.62 m wide and 1.39 m high), the ŠKODA 1000 MB offered space and comfort for the

The advantage was that the boot did not have to be opened completely to access the spare wheel. Very special examples of the ŠKODA 1000 MB and the two-door ŠKODA 1000 MBX model can be seen today at the new ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav, including the unique estate prototype. The vehicles also regularly participate at major antique car shows and classic rallies.

The lost Bentley race car!

n 1931, ordered by Rolls-Royce who had just bought the company, Bentley retired from all racing activity.

However in 1965, in defiance of factory policy, Rolls-Royce Marketing director John H. Craig went behind the scenes and swore Bentley club racer Berry Eastick to secrecy, supplying him with one of two existing racing chassis and later with an engine and suspension. Alan Padget led the project to build the car helped by Lyncar builders of England who supplied a body for the monocoque vehicle. The Bentley SSS C2 Open Wheel Race Car was born. Bentley chassis No. 1 was never bodied but the No. 2 (in the pictures at the 2014 Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance) is most likely the last traditionally build race chassis to have raced with Bentley colors between 1931 and 2001 when Bentley returned to sports car racing. The car was raced at various club events through England boasting a 6.25 Litre V8 engine, producing approximately 600 hp. Bentley denied the existence of the car. In fact the original drawings suggest a pre-production exhibition car, never to be sold or raced. The secrecy shrouding the entire conception of the car makes the Bentley SSS C2 race car a unique piece of automotive history, a real legend.

THE MONTEREY MOT T he Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is likened to a museum that springs to life each August on the Monterey Peninsula. And this year is no exception as 550 historic and period-correct race cars have been accepted to compete in 15 race groups over the four-day gathering, August 14-17 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The oldest car accepted is Brian Blain’s 1911 National 40. Sporting 100 horsepower, the National was driven by Charlie Merz in the inaugural Indianapolis 500 held in 1911, finishing seventh at an average speed of 70.36 miles per hour and in so doing, collecting $700 in prize money. On the opposite end of the race group spectrum is Mazda’s 1992 RX-792P GTP (in the picutre), which is

one of two prototypes that competed in the 1992 IMSA GTP championship. Price Cobb and Pete Halsmer were the original factory drivers to pilot the entirely new 720-horsepower car against the established Eagle Toyotas and factory Nissans.

It’s an international field in Monterey, as U.S. entries will be joined by cars from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, South Africa and United Kingdom. Maserati North America will officially celebrate its centennial at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion as part of its international efforts. As the oldest of the three Italian marques, Maserati will be well represented in its heritage display and on the track. Iconic Tipo 60s and 61s, nicknamed the Birdcage,

TORSPORT REUNION will be running as are the sleek 300S and 450S models that once competed in the famed Mille Miglia, Nurburgring and other punishing races. Additionally, the first-ever 4CL that Maserati produced in 1939, which was originally raced by factory drivers Luigi Villoresi, Carlo Felice Trossi and Franco Cortese, will be racing in Monterey.

were popularized among American audiences by the ‘60s television show “Get Smart.” For racing, Carroll Shelby began highly modifying production Tigers into competition cars for entry into the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite all three retiring from the race, the Tigers raced through the end of the decade compiling impressive strings of victories.

Not surprisingly, the largest single make of cars come from the motorsports annals of Porsche. Sixty four Porsches, from the earlier 356 and 911 to the later 962 will be lining up on their respective grids. Porsche continues to be heavily involved in sports car racing and the yearly entries reflect the company’s commitment to motorsports. Also on tap in Monterey is the 50th anniversary of the Sunbeam Tiger, which

PASION ARGENTINA

Luis Jose di Palma (Torino)

The Turismo de Carretera is one of the oldest and most successful motorsport series of the world. This long history started in 1937 when the “bloody” passion pushed a group of motorsport’s pioneers to organize races along the gravel routes of Argentina. The danger, the spirit of adventure, the speed and the drivers’ extraordinary ability soon contributed to increase incredibly the popularity of the Turismo de Carretera, so creating a unique

“phenomenum” that runs across the decades of the last century preserving its original qualities. It is not possible to forget that in 1940 and 1941 Juan Manuel Fangio was crowned “campeon” with his Chevrolet after a hard fought battle against Ford rivals. From those times to today the Turismo de Carretera story is a long series of heroic chapters as the championship has without intermission continued to evolve to

Yet today the series is reserved to cars derived from road cars (coupe or sedan) built in Argentina from 1967 up to 1993 powered by engines of 2.500 cc. and sees on track Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and Torino.

READY FOR ANOTHER SEASON The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will again present the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (Type 991) after its successful debut last season and as usual the 30-minute sprint races will be contested just before the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The secret is in the mix: talented youngsters and ambitious teams pit themselves against seasoned specialists and use the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup to attract attention. The series has proven itself as an excellent springboard, with Michael Christensen as a classic example: last year the Dane contested his maiden Supercup season as a Porsche Junior. Thanks to consistently good results including victory on the N端rburgring, he earned

himself a contract this year with the Porsche factory squad. Keen to follow in his footsteps this year are several other Porsche Juniors: Klaus Bachler (Austria) as well as New Zealander Earl Bamber as the winner of the Porsche Motorsport International Cup Scholarship. Both receive support from Porsche with a funding package worth 200,000 Euro. For the 2013 season Porsche pays out more than 730,000 Euros in prize money to drivers and teams. ENRICO’S NOTEBOOK www.enricozanarini.com

14 April 2014

C i ao Ste f a n o Ciao is an italian expression; it means hi, hello and good bye. Ciao is a happy word, but sometimes it can be sad. This time my ciao is sad, because I am saying good bye to a friend, a great person who I met nearly twenty years ago when I managed Eddie Irvine and we landed the job at Ferrari. Stefano was our point of reference for everything, a great young man wanting to become a great manager. In those days at Ferrari you sensed two distinct currents: The Schumacher Stefano Domenicali

boys and the Irvine boys and Stefano was one of us. He could never say so because he never could in his position, but deep down Eddie and I knew. He always looked at us as if we were the ones who needed the bigger help, like you would with you younger and least experienced child. We received so much from him in those four years and we never thanked him enough. Later I met Stefano again as we dealt on various commercial and sporting issues and he always acted as the professional manager leading his company would, maintaining a friendly distance, but keeping his word like no one else in our sport. When he signed Fisichella in 2009 he was happier than me, having finally taken an Italian driver to The Scuderia under his management. And he was probably more disappointed than I was for the results. Domenicali was never a lucky man in F.1 yet luck could have changed the course of his working life in 2008, 2010 and 2012, but coming second was never good enough. Finally luck struck Stefano today, by giving him back his private life.Nothing else matters.

20 April 2014

A week end of fire I did not go to China. This time I was bound to go to Silverstone to watch another race, to manage another driver and to write another story. Something went right in Shanghai with Alonso driving the perfect grand prix and finishing as the best of the rest. With Mercedes and

Antonio Fuoco

1st May 2014

Twenty years ago I have been working in F.1 since 1992, and I clearly remember sunday May 1, twenty years ago. I went to Imola on the thursday before, to seal a new sponsorship deal with Jordan. I had signed a new client for the race who would eventually become a major supporter of the Irish squad the following year.We rented a VIP lounge above the pits and grouped a small gathering listening to EJ enchanting the newcomer to his Team. To me, my sponsor’s logo looked

Hamilton being so powerunitful and strong, that is the most Ferrari could hope for. The outcome of the 2014 Formula One championship is a written story, I bet. Mercedes has no reason to go backwards and everyone else has no reason to abandon hope to catch up, in vane. The gap is too huge and everyone can see Lewis and Nico to shine and the others to struggle. Ferrari and Red Bull are in for the honors, no more. For me it was a very exciting Easter week end. I went to the opening race of the international Formula 3 Championship to cheer my youngest driver and promising star, Antonio Fuoco. He is a great lad, full of talent and proud to belong to the Ferrari stable. In his debut, in what promises to be one of the most competitive series ever, he collected his maiden victory, five podiums and the second place in the championship, six points away from the lead. For this my story, this time, is for him. Fuoco means fire in english and the boy has a fiery attitude, shown to everyone last year when he won the 2.0 Renault Alps championship at his first season in an open wheeler. “Call him Tony Fire” said my friend Irvine when he met him in Miami over one year ago “by doing so every one will understand and remember his name as Fuoco means nothing to the english speaking crowds” And Eddie may be right, but only according to an alphabetical point of view, ‘coz Antonio is not going to stay unknown for much longer… and this is something Ferrari can really hope for.

magnificent on Jordan’s blue livery and I was very proud of it. Nothing else mattered to me that day and I marked it as one of my first commercial successes…On friday Rubens hit the barriers at the variante bassa, a shocking accident, but luckily with no serious consequences for the brazilian, an omen for more dramatic things to come in a tragic week end. I could not stay for the race as I managed a bunch of F.3000 drivers competing in a championship round in Silverstone, so I took an early saturday morning flight to the UK. The rest of the story is well known..I can only remember the frightening silence in the British press room looking at the accident scene on the TV monitors…The local race attracting no interest at all. I never met Ayrton, just crossed his path a few times in the paddock. In those days I had very little to do with drivers of the top formula. My main job in F.1 was to find money for Jordan GP, for this I only knew Irvine and Barrichello. However Senna meant something to me, to my working life in F.1, at least in one, dramatic episode. Our first and only close encounter took place in 1993 at the portuguese circuit in Estoril. For a few years I managed a young Italian racer, Emanuele Naspetti. Together, we experienced F.1 for the first time twelve months earlier when he drove the March-Illmor for five GPs. Emanuele found the necessary funds to buy the seat from Jordan and to aim at one more shot at the category; the only way to impress the circus

I watched Emanuele driving out of pit lane and lapping around the track for his warm-up, no body in front to distract or disturb him. As he was coming to negotiate the last corner to start his quick stint, Senna drove out of the pits…. I saw it happening…. Ayrton would never give way to a young Naspetti, not in that state of mind. Enrico Zanarini is one of the most expert and successful managers of the Formula 1circus. Since the mid 80s he’s playing a primary role in the paddock by supporting the career of drivers as Eddie Irvine, Giancarlo Fisichella, Vitantonio Liuzzi just to mention a few. Enrico also manages the activity of important sponsors as he’s at the head of one of the main international sport/ management agency. He has recently started writing his reflections about Formula 1 on his own blog and he has also accepted to publish the more interesting thoughts on RACE GLOBALMAG. We are happy to host his “behind the scenes” insights and truly free point of view, even if sometimes these don’t perfectly match the RGM point of view.

I MEAN...

“Drivers still have an input on the result and developing the car – but as we know Formula One is a category that is dominated by the performance of the car, in a way. We saw in Bahrain also in the last couple of laps, they were fighting two team-mates, two team-mates, two team-mates until the tenth or twelfth position. It’s difficult to get away from that order. It has been more or less like this in the past. I don’t see any big difference. Probably it’s a little bit more extreme now with all the technology. In the past there were some strange cases in races like Monaco or things like that, maybe a midfield car could fight for a podium etc.. In this last couple of years it’s difficult to see that but, y’know, you take it or you go in another category. It is what it is.” Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, Shanghai 17/04/14 “I think we need to assess what Stefano (Domenicali) decided. He was probably not any more in the mood to continue and with the feeling of taking the weight on his shoulders. He made a very responsible move. It’s not easy, when you have a very privileged position in one Formula One team to be able to step back and to say ‘maybe it’s better to move’. But he did it, just for Ferrari’s interest and improvement so that’s something that we cannot forget and now we have to respect that decision. I think that Stefano was a great man, first of all. I’m a close friend of his, not just on the circuit. We ski together every January 1st in Italy in the mountains. We still have a close relationship. We’ve been talking all the week long. I think that will continue, because we have known each for many years and we have worked very closely for this couple of years, so that’s important, to separate work from friendship.” Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, Shanghai 17/04/14

“When I was a kid I had all the books, all the videos, he(Senna) was the driver I looked up to, way before I even started racing. He kind of inspired me to even be a driver and of course, on the day of his passing, his death was... it was very difficult for me to show my emotions in my family so I went off to a quiet place and it was very difficult for several days to really... your hero’s gone. But an incredible legend; you can still learn things from how he approached racing and how he drove. You like to think that one day you may be recognised as someone that was able to drive similarly to him.” Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, Shanghai 17/04/14 “We started four years ago with the engine manufacturers. We had quite big meeting with lots of them assembled in Paris. It was the 27th of April, in fact, in 2010. We assembled them all together and the initial goal was to have a 50 per cent increase in efficiency but over a period of time that became diluted somewhat because it appeared that was rather ambitious for the start of this new engine era. So we ended up with what we have now and that is an engine that everyone can see is about 35 per cent more efficient than the previous engines.” Charlie Whiting, FIA, Shanghai 18/04/14 “The regulations were specifically written to take some of the ideas are already in the road car world, so downsizing, downspeeding and turbocharging but adding some new, interesting technologies in there such as the electric turbocharger as a specific example and those sort of projects are already being worked on.” Andy Cowell, Mercedes, Shanghai 18/04/14

FORMULA UNO “ I share the remarks that transfers are already happening. The transfers are not only specific technologies, the e-turbo being one of them, but also the fundamental alignment of the mission we have. Our challenge now is to race, to go as fast as we can with the given fuel allocation, which is a very, very similar mission to our road car colleagues who have to use the smallest amount of fuel to get a given mission done and that’s extremely close.” Rob White, Renault Sport F1, Shanghai 18/04/14 “We will return in the year 2015 for the Formula One. One of the major reasons for our decision was the new regulation introduced this year and that the various environment… I mean green technologies in the new Formula One power unit, as well as the total energy management are both very challenging and significant. The new regulation encourages each power unit supplier to pursue the ultimate combustions efficiency and high pressure direct injections, such as many, many new technology. Thus the challenge is to convert each unit of gasoline into energy and this is expected to be reflected on the huge production mode. That’s the reason why.” Yasuhisa Arai, Honda, Shanghai 18/04/14 “I couldn’t have got anything extra out of the car on that last lap, I got everything I could out of it; for that I’m pleased and I got rewarded with a front row place for tomorrow. It took a while to get going in the session today, I didn’t have the comfort or pace that I was aiming for, but I got it at the end. I feel like I’m ready to get a good result, I know it’s never going to be easy but I’m prepared for the fight tomorrow and I’ll embrace it. I couldn’t have settled into the team any better to be honest, they made me feel at home very quickly and it’s helping me. I’m really enjoying the driving and it seems to be showing with the results. I’m really pleased.“ Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull, Shangai 19/04/14

Nico Hülkenberg

“Coming away from China with another ten points in our pocket and third place in the teams’ standings is a very good effort. We never expected Shanghai to be our strongest track so I think we can feel pretty satisfied with our performance over the entire weekend. Nico’s race was relatively straightforward and we judged the tyre strategy correctly as he held off Bottas in the final stint. Sergio staged a strong recovery drive to move up into the points, which was a good effort when you consider he has not felt completely comfortable with the car balance this weekend. To have 54 points after four races is an excellent effort and we can be pleased with the consistency we have shown over a variety of different circuits.” Robert Fernley, Force India Team Principal, Shanghai 20/04/14

WORLD RALLY

François-Xavier “FX” Demaison, Technical Project Leader for the WRC at Volkswagen, has been involved in the World Rally Championship for ten years. As such, he arrived in the Volkswagen team with a wealth of WRC experience. He saw the opportunity in Wolfsburg and Hannover to take responsibility for the project, from the initial sketches to the World Championship title. And he has done precisely that since 2011

ARDER TITLE…”

WORLD RALLY

Mr. Demaison, you are known as the father of the Polo R WRC, and now you actually have twins – the 2013 World Championship-winning car and the new 2014 version. How can you tell the difference between the two? “It is actually not that easy. The most obvious thing is probably the new design. Under the bonnet, the 2014 version is a more durable variant of the 2013 Polo R WRC, with many areas more stable and reliable. The asphalt and gravel versions each have reinforced suspension parts, and a number of drive components have also been modified”. Volkswagen had no retirement as a result of a technical issue in 2013 – why was reliability such a major issue? “First of all, our drivers always want to push hard – perhaps even more so in 2014 than in 2013. We experienced a few setbacks last year due to the drivers’ aggressive driving style – something which is often a necessity if

PIT STOP Victory for SĂŠbastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia at Rally Portugal marked the eighth consecutive triumph for the Polo R WRC. This sees Volkswagen equal the longest winning run in the history of the World Rally Championship. The team won in Australia, France, Spain and Great Britain in 2013, and has since added victories in Monte Carlo, Sweden, Mexico and Portugal this season. The record was previously held by WRC rival CitroĂŤn, who achieved the same feat in 2011.

you’re aiming for a win. However, if Jari- Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen in Finland, and Sébastien Ogier in Germany, had already had the reinforced components on their cars, they might still have reached the finish. On top of that were a few less obvious issues, which we wanted to solve with new components. We wanted to make the Polo R WRC more bulletproof. And we obviously also wanted to make our mechanics’ lives a little easier at the rallies”. There was a limited number of Jokers, which in turn restricted the options available for making any far-reaching changes to the Polo R WRC. How did you weigh up the pros and cons of the individual modifications? “We held a number of discussions with Technical Director Willy Rampf on this topic. As a result of the limited number of Jokers, we opted for the more reliable variant. Once you have played a Joker, there is no going back – you have to use the modified components

WORLD RALLY

as they are. There are only a few changes that affect the performance itself. For example, we now have more set-up options in one or two areas”. To what extent has the Polo R WRC been modified to suit the preferences and driving styles of the three drivers? “Our top two drivers, Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala, have fundamentally different driving styles. Séb is always looking for the shortest route between corners, while Jari-Matti likes to throw his car sideways along the road. Séb had the advantage of a year’s testing, and adjusted the Polo R WRC to suit his driving style. When Jari-Matti joined us at the end of 2012, he initially wanted to modify the Polo R WRC to meet his requirements. However, it turned out that Séb’s driving style is the quicker of the two – so Jari-Matti gradually adapted his style to this ‘central European style’. That is not something you can do overnight”.

WORLD RALLY

PIT STOP DID YOU KNOW THAT … … a door can be changed as quick as a flash? During a rally, it takes less than 30 seconds to remove a damaged door and replace it with a new one. … the shock absorbers are subjected to forces of up to four tons? This kind of extreme impact occurs when a car hits stones or rocks. … as well as the brakes, the shock absorbers are also subjected to high temperatures? The ZF single-tube shock absorbers heat up to 150 degrees Celsius. They also spring five times quicker than a production damper. … the brake callipers on a World Rally Car are water-cooled? On production cars and Formula One cars they are always air-cooled. Compared to Formula One, rally cars do not reach high enough speeds to cool the brake discs using the airflow generated. … the rear wing helps the car fly better on big jumps? The wing as well as generating downforce in corners, is designed to improve the flight of the car on long jumps.Without the rear wing, the Polo R WRC would land on its nose.

WORLD RALLY

How difficult will it be to defend the title – from a technician’s point of view? “It is always harder to defend the title than it is to win it in the first place. I think we surprised a lot of people last year and caught some off their guard. Many, including ourselves, did not expect us to be challenging from the word go and throughout the entire season. We are now the team that everyone wants to beat. It is easy to lose concentration and make a silly mistake, or to take things lightly. You can soon lose a rally or the World Championship that way. Everyone in the team has to be hungry for success – mechanics, engineers and drivers”. Compared to last year, how strong do you expect the opposition to be? “I am taking every single one of our opponents seriously. They could easily do to us what we did to them last season. I refer primarily to Hyundai there. Citroën and Ford also line up with new drivers, and are also determined to beat us. 2014 will definitely not be easy for us, and we will not rest on our laurels”.

INDYCAR

Face to face with Simon Pagenaud

I WANT TO WIN THE INDY 500!

by Niccolò Gargiulo

After winning Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors in 2012 and scoring his first two Verizon IndyCar Series wins in 2013, the Frenchman is looking to contend for the 2014 championship. “The fact that we started well is important, because at the end of the year every point matters said Pagenaud - it’s good to feel pretentious enough to feel like we can compete with Penske, Ganassi and Andretti. It’s never too early to think championship.” The strong start is a refreshing change for Pagenaud, he is fully committed to the IndyCar program but he is also willing to tell us about his career and about motorsport in general.

RACING IN AMERICA

“My American career has been pretty good so far, I came here in 2006 racing Champ Car Atlantic and won the championship the first year. I then went to sports cars in the American Le Mans Series and at the same time I raced in Europe in Le Mans, where I really learned a lot and did a lot of test days. Then I decided to focus on going to IndyCar and fortunately it was possible. I’ve been in IndyCar since 2011 and I’m very happy to be here.”

FORMULA 1

“I won’t lie, Formula 1 has been a dream and it’s still something that I would like to have the chance to try sometime. But being honest IndyCar is a high level of competition with lots of strong drivers. I like the fact that it is very competitive and you have to push yourself so hard. I like the fact that we all have the same cars. Right now I still think that Formula 1 is the pinnacle of racing, but here it’s just IndyCar. I want to win the Indy 500 because it’s the biggest race in the world and that’s my racing career goal. Formula 1 is something else, my long term career goal is winning in IndyCar.”

AMERICAN RACING vs EUROPEAN RACING

“I think the atmosphere here in USA is very different. The biggest thing I found here is that the car is made for the driver. There is a relationship between the team and the driver that is very respectful. There is a whole different level of respect here in America between driver, engineer and team. The driver is treated as a playmaker and seen as an athlete. In Europe I felt like there is a lot of intelligence, lot of schools with many good engineers,

but sometimes is too engineers and not human anymore, and you just drive a car that is set up on the computers and you just have to drive that car no matter what. I like to think that you have to leave it to the driver to do a better job. The tracks are also different here. Safety in America is not as high as it is in Europe, but in Europe is almost getting boring because it is too safe.”

FRIENDSHIPS…

“Sebastien Bourdais is a good friend of mine. We raced together at Peugeot and we finished second in Le Mans together. He gave me many good advices when I moved to

America so he is a really good friend. There are lot of other drivers I am friend with because there is really a very friendly atmosphere here.”

… AND RIVALRIES

“There is always rivalry when all these drivers want to win really bad. I would say my biggest rival is Will Power, we’ve been teammates and we both know what we can do, and there’s nothing more important for me than beating him.”

PIT STOP Simon Pagenaud is still involved in sports car racing. After racing in Daytona and Sebring with the Extreme Speed HPD ARX03b Honda, he shared his comments on the new United Sports Car Championship: “I think it’s great. It merges a lot of different teams and there is a lot of different talent together and I think it’s fantastic. It’s great to have the opportunity to see the Grand AM cars and the LMP cars fighting and I’m happy to see that the LMP is still alive. The level of competition in the GT classes adds even more value to the championship. I think it has a great future.”

NASCAR WHELEN EURO SERIES

The first edition of the Valencia NASCAR Fest drew over 14,000 fans to the Ricardo Tormo Circuit for the 2014 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season opener, underlining a great success both on and off the track. Close competition, open paddock, autograph sessions, family entertainment: the Spanish crowd truly enjoyed the unique atmosphere of a real NASCAR weekend and is already marking the date on the calendar for next year’s event.

NASCAR GREEN FLAG “It has been a great weekend, looking forward to next year’s Valencia NASCAR fest second edition” said Gonzalo Gobert, director of the Circuit Ricardo Tormo. “Teams and drivers in the four races offered a great show and that’s something that I want to thank in the name of Valence people. The official NASCAR series in Europe enjoyed a huge step in terms of competition thanks to the arrival of new highly-professional international teams and drivers

that challenged the established ones: on Saturday morning, at the end of a tense 15-minutes ELITE 1 qualifying session, the two PK Carsport Chevrolets SS monopolized the front row with Bert Longin and Anthony Kumpen, but the top5 drivers were separated by less than 2 tenths of a second and the first eleven cars were all in the same second, testifying how tight the battle for the pole position

(the Pole Winner Award will be awarded at the end of the season with a Race And Win watch) will be this year and how tight is the field in NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. And the four races of the Spanish weekend were even more exciting! A huge 28-car field, with drivers from all over the world at the wheel, stormed on the front straight when the safety car pulled-in for Anthony Kumpen/Maxime Dumarey and Bert Longin/Neal Van Vaerenbergh, Chevrolet SS

NASCAR GREEN FLAG the start of the ELITE 1 Saturday Race and the battle was immediately on. Daring three/four-wides, bold overtaking maneuvers, contacts, double-file restarts, huge comebacks, last-lap passes for the win and heart-breaking illusions: the fans in Valencia enjoyed an extraordinary mix of emotions that only NASCAR racing can bring.

The ELITE 1 Saturday Race went to an enthusiast Yann Zimmer (TFT-Moser Vernet Ford Mustang), who recovered from the ninth place on the grid and took advantage of the duel between the two PK Carsport teammates, overtaking both of them between turn 1 and 2 in the late stages of the 30-minutes race and getting his second career NASCAR win. The 17-year-old Belgian rookie Neal Van Vaerenbergh (PK Carsport

Chevrolet SS) got the better of Italians Nicolò Rocca (CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS) and Marsilio Canuti (TFT Chevrolet SS) in the ELITE 2 Saturday Race. Two-time Champion Ander Vilarino (TFT-Banco Santander Chevrolet SS), who was forced by a contact to an unscheduled pit-stop on Saturday, returned to his best on Sunday to score a wire-to-wire

win in the second ELITE 1 Race of the weekend, preceding local hero Borja Garcia (Ford Autolix Competition Ford Mustang) and Bert Longin under the checkered flag in a 15-minutes long dash to the finish after an early double-file restart. The race was highlighted by two huge comebacks: 2013 vicechampion Frederic Gabillon (Still Racing Chevrolet Camaro) recovered for the 27th position on

Van Vaerenbergh scored an outstanding second win a row in the ELITE 2 Sunday Race, edging 2009 champion Wilfried Boucenna (Overdrive Ford Mustang) and Marsilio Canuti.

Longin and Kumpen are tied at the top of the ELITE 1 standings, just 5 points ahead of Cheever, who is first in the Jerome Sarran Trophy classification. Guillaume Rousseau (Bull Racing Team) sits in 13th place and leads the Challenger Trophy, while Van Vaerenbergh took all the points available in Valencia, rocketing to first place in the ELITE 2 Division standings and the Rookie Cup. V8 Supercars

“I AM TOTALL “I AM TOTALLY COMMITTED COMMITTED TOWINNING” WINNING” TO

LY One of the worst kept secrets of 2014 in the V8 Supercars was the move from FPR to Erebus of Will Davison. The 31 years old driver from Melbourne is facing a new chapter in his racing career driving the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG,

by Dario Riccioni

obtaining some good results already with multiple Top10-finishes. We had the opportunity to talk to him, about his new challenge, his future project and being in a team with a female boss. Here’s what he told us.

V8 Supercars This year you joined the Erebus team. Who made the first move and when did you decide to join them? “We were approached by Erebus when we were considering the future and the more we talked, the more I could see the opportunity. It’s a very exciting project with huge potential and that’s what drew me to it. I only made the decision after Bathurst last year, when we’d considered all the options”. How is to be part of a team with a female boss? How is your relationship with Betty? “Betty’s great, she’s like a mum to everyone in the team. She’s really passionate & supportive, loves her motor racing, but she leaves the detail to the experts in the team. Betty is also very clever too, many people underestimate her I think”. What do you think about the Mercedes E63 AMG? What are the dif-

ferences with the Ford Falcon you drove till last year? “The Benz is a great racecar... It does some things better than the cars I’ve been driving elsewhere, and some things not as well. We’ve worked hard on its development and came a long way, but have more to do. Most of the time it’s a really nice car to drive but, no question, we need more useable power. That’s what we’re working on right now”. In this early part of the season Erebus showed a good form, sure a better one than 2013. Do you think the team will be a contender for the endurance races this year? “I believe so... We’ve done an enormous amount of development, we’re improving the car all the time, understanding it better and with some further development we have happening, I believe we will be very competitive by then, hopefully sooner”.

Your teammate Lee Holdsworth won a race in Winton. Do you think you’ll be able to get your first win with Erebus this year? Eventually, which track do you think will be the right one for that? “Lee did an outstanding job, I am so pleased for the whole team, they’ve worked very hard for it. He’s a great teammate too. Of course I am totally committed to winning and believe it’s entirely possible this year, as Lee showed”. In February you took part in the Bathurst 12 hour. Do you have any plan to attend some other races outside of the V8 Supercars calendar this year? “One of my motivations to come to Erebus was to do things outside of V8 Supercar racing, and GT competition globally is very attractive, it’s something I want to be a part of. I’d like to do more of that with Erebus and I will as opportunities arise”. Do you have any plan to attend an international event soon? If not, in which championship would you like to run a one-off? “As I’ve said, I’d like to do some more GT racing and I guess events like the Spa 24 Hours, Macau, even Le Mans are on the wish list. Some could happen as soon as this year, others maybe next year or beyond that”.
