l r o o s C Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) was established in 1983 by a group of artists who are acknowledged by critics to be among the best in their field. Members work in many diverse mediums including oil, watercolors, acrylics, wood, gouache, pen & ink, clay and metal. AFAS and its members participate in select shows across the USA and will showcase the latest creations of some of the finest automotive artists in the world at the Lodge at Pebble Beach Councourse d’Elegance in beautiful Carmel, California, on August 17.

Peter Hearsey

“I thoroughly enjoyed working on ‘Ferrari v Jaguar in the Isle of Man in 1953,” said Hearsey. “The Isle of Man is a beautiful island in the middle of the Irish Sea that has been home to some of the most exhilarating, and dangerous, motorsport races since 1904. This painting is true to the details of these two amazing racecars the day Hans Ruesch and Stirling Moss piloted them through the winding roads in 1953. I’m especially excited that this painting will be featured on the front cover of a book about the history of motor racing in the Isle of Man, due to be published later this year.”

“I design each of my works to be an abstraction of the beauty of the automobile,” said Hale. “I can’t think of a better place to showcase my new works than the Pebble Beach Concours. I’m looking forward to showing seven new paintings this year that I’ve completed specifically for the wonderful marques at Pebble Beach. I find the sheet metal on this particular classic to be beautiful and some of the finest surface development of any classic. This is often a view that I favor because of its simplicity and beauty.”

( Jay Koka

“Aside from being a drop-dead beautiful car, I wanted to paint this Ferrari because it’s more or less the same color as the crane,” said Koka. “The stripes were included because I didn’t want the crane to be a ‘wall of blue,’ The blue Ferrari blended well and does not overpower the painting. You have to see these container cranes in person to believe their size. Although from completely different worlds, I felt that the Ferrari and the crane are both intriguing engineering marvels that work well together visually.”

Klaus Wagger

“I love to recreate electrifying moments in auto racing,” said Wagger. “This year for Pebble Beach, I wanted to display an iconic moment in sports car racing to complement the featured marques. The 1958 12 hours of Sebring was a monumental race for the Ferrari 250TR (Testa Rrossa),” said Wagger “Ferrari has always been an innovator both on and off the track. ’Redhead’ captures the beginning of a new generation of sports car racing.”

“Typically, I choose to paint Formula One cars because the exposed wheels give an incredible sensation of power,” said Nakaoka. “The story behind the battle of these two cars is extremely compelling,” said Nakaoka. “I created this piece to highlight the fierce competition between these legendary machines – the Ferrari and the Renault.”

Ken Eberts

Ken Eberts, AFAS President and one of the foremost artists in the automotive art world, will be revealing his new display of paintings based on the theme ‘black and white’ at the Pebble Beach Concours this year. Eberts, who began his career as a designer at Ford Motor Company, is one of the founding members of AFAS. “The display is comprised of five paintings of white Maserati “Birdcage” race cars and five paintings of black Ferrari P4’s,” said Eberts. “I believe that the Maserati Birdcage and the Ferrari P4 are automotive works of art. The combination of form follows ‘function’, ‘design’, ‘theme’ and ‘Italian metal craftsmanship’ combined to create beautiful cars that could actually be called automotive sculptures.”

“Normally, I don’t follow trends, and I do what I love,” said Cleworth. “But this year I decided to look into who would be at the show and get inspired by that. After going online and browsing the manufacturers, I found two classic cars that caught my eye. These vintage cars inspired me to approach these pieces differently both in medium and design. The Rolls-Royce Phantom, which is the focus of my second painting, is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen on wheels,” said Cleworth. “Even though it’s about a block long, the curves and sleekness of the car needed to be captured in art. And so far this is one of my most favorite pieces.”

NEW 2015

HYUNDAI SONATA

Displaying a refined, premium style, the all-new Sonata showcases Hyundai Motor’s sleek exterior and intuitive interior design ethos, projecting a harmonious and athletic appearance.

(

NEW 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA

T

(

he all-new Sonata project began with the aim of developing a world-class premium mid-size sedan through innovation in fundamental areas, while maintaining the model’s proud heritage. Inspiring driver confidence was an important goal for the all-new Sonata: the new model utilizes a modified Hyundai Motor platform that has been optimized to offer a dynamic driving experience. The car’s newly designed underpinnings contribute to an improvement in suspension performance and a greater structural rigidity over the previous generation model, resulting in 41% greater torsional strength and 35% greater bending strength than the outgoing model. The new model is 35 millimeters longer and 30 millimeters wider than the previous generation Sonata, delivering a marginal increase in exterior size but worthwhile gains in internal volume.

Following the world premiere of the all-new Genesis luxury sedan, the all-new Sonata is the second vehicle to demonstrate Hyundai Motor’s design philosophy, Fluidic Sculpture 2.0. A single-frame premium 3D hexagonal grille is a key styling element at the front of the all-new Sonata, while refined swage lines on its flanks and futuristic features at its rear contribute to its dynamic shape. Powerful light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lights and striking rear light clusters add to the new model’s sophisticated appearance. The all-new Sonata benefits from improved interior ergonomics, resulting in a completely driver-focused cabin that incorporates Hyundai Motor’s core interior design principles of safety, intuitiveness and simplicity.

“The Sonata has been playing a key role in Hyundai Motor’s rapid growth in the global market, as well as leading the development of the Korean auto industry. We are confident that the all-new Sonata will change the landscape of the global mid-size sedan market,” Choong Ho Kim, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor, said during the allnew Sonata launching ceremony in Seoul “Hyundai Motor has been pursuing qualitative growth, providing innovative experiences and values to our customers, and the all-new Sonata will be at the center of these efforts.”

(

NEW 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA

(

In order to convey this sense of luxury the points of contact between the driver and car were closely examined and enhanced – one result being the high-grade materials such as leather and metal that are utilized throughout. Maximum seat comfort and convenience is provided through the use of highend environmentally friendly materials and elegant trim details. For example, Hyundai Motor engineers focused their attention on developing the ideal steering wheel design to ensure the best possible grip and feel for the driver. After a series of tests the dimensions and style of the wheel were altered: an overall increase in rim cross section thickness and ergonomic improvements to grip rests ensure more of the steering wheel surface is in contact with the driver. The Korean car has also been fitted with newly configured parts, such as a redesig-

ned steering column in order to accommodate the car’s optimal driver-focused layout. The central console has moved away from the traditional shape and style, and vital information is now displayed in a more effective and easy-to-digest manner, in the instrument cluster facing the driver. Driving Performance The all-new Sonata sets a new standard for ride in a mid-size sedan. Extensive chassis testing and tuning set out to improve the ride characteristics of the all-new Sonata over its predecessor, with particular attention being paid to chassis rigidity. Improved twisting and bending strength have been achieved thanks to greater use of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), which is twice as rigid and 10 percent lighter than traditional steel, resulting in enhanced safety and driving performance.

Reducing road noise, vibrations and enhancing driving dynamics were priorities for the all-new Sonata development team. These objectives were achieved in part through optimized suspension damping that gives occupants a soft, silent and comfortable experience. In order to improve ride and handling performance, there have been significant changes to the front and rear suspension, whose structure and geometry have been greatly modified to enhance responsiveness, handling and stability. The dual lower suspension arms of the rear suspension of the all-new Sonata distribute lateral forces more effectively than single arm versions, providing greater freedom to finely tune ride characteristics. Steering feel has been further increased thanks to the development of the Motor Dri-

ven Power Steering (MDPS) that has resulted in a larger data processing unit, increased logic control cycle and motor control speed, and greater steering column rigidity. Gentle on-center feel and agile, precise and responsive steering feel are aided by the all-new Sonata’s Drive Mode Select function, which allows the driver to choose the best driving parameters to suit their requirements or the current road conditions. In terms of braking, the all-new Sonata boasts superior stopping distances for a car of its class, combined with an assured, firm feel. Driver confidence is enhanced through the linear delivery of braking performance, while greater comfort is ensured thanks to minimal intrusion of noise and vibration into the cabin.

(

NEW 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA

(

Carefully-paired powertrain combinations allow the all-new Sonata to deliver improved drivability over the previous generation model. A key aim during the development of the all-new Sonata was to provide useable performance and drivability while delivering maximum economy under regularly-encountered driving conditions. Safety A 51 percent of the all-new Sonata’s steel is Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), an increase of 30 percent over the previous generation model. These AHSS components are used to both increase stiffness and more effectively protect passengers, helping the all-new Sonata to achieve top-class safety ratings according to the company’s internal tests. The new model has been further strengthened by increasing the use of structural

adhesive more than ten times when compared with the previous generation model. The addition of dual member structures in main sections of the body has added strength too, while the prevalence of hot-stamped components has increased by 9 percent over the previous model. Notably, the hot-stamped double-section structure on the B-pillar especially contributes greatly to the excellent performance of the all-new Sonata in crash performance tests. These changes mean that the all-new Sonata’s torsional and bending stiffness has increased by 41 percent and 35 percent respectively, compared with its predecessor. Internal testing data suggest that the new model will score highly in official crash overlap and chassis strength tests. In addition, high rear impact performance is ensured through reinforced side and cross members that support

The all-new Sonata, the result of three years of development and an investment of approximately 450 billion Won (KRW), is scheduled to be launched outside Korea in the second half of this year. Hyundai Motor targets to sell a total of 228,000 units (Korea: 63,000 / Overseas: 165,000) for this year, while aiming to expand it up to 338,000 units (Korea: 89,000 / Overseas: 249,000) next year.

the vehicle’s sub-frames and strengthen subframe mounting points, which also improves suspension responsiveness. The all-new Sonata features an abundance of advanced safety features designed to protect its occupants. A suite of airbags, including driver knee airbag, are fitted to the new model, while several advanced passive and active systems work harmoniously to ensure the all-new Sonata is one of the safest vehicles on the road. Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC) uses radar to automatically calculate the distance to cars directly ahead and behind. Blind Spot Detection (BSD) monitors traffic around the car in the driver’s blind spots, warning drivers of possible unseen hazards. Frontal impact forces are absorbed and distributed through the mid-section to minimize cabin distortion.

In terms of side and rear collision tests, the all-new Sonata provides high levels of occupant protection thanks to inherent strength achieved through the use of hot-stamped steel with dual layer reinforcement, and independent side airbag technology specially designed to protect occupant’s upper bodies in the event of an accident. Pedestrian safety was also a prime consideration, resulting in the provision of a durable and weight-optimized hood structure, and a scuttle panel that offers increased head protection safeguards. Convenience The new 2015 Sonata delivers uncompromising convenience and generous interior space, together with elegant interior details, offering luxury typically associated with vehicles from the class above.

A panoramic sunroof brings a sense of the outside into the cabin of the all-new Sonata, and ensures a light and refreshing atmosphere is maintained at all times. Throughout the vehicle, elegant hand-crafted details can be found, utilizing high-end environmentallyfriendly materials. Advanced vehicle infotainment features, including sophisticated next-generation multimedia systems, ensure the all-new Sonata delivers cutting-edge entertainment and connectivity to drivers and passengers. A range of options are available, starting with a 3.8” LCD display, moving up to 8.0” color touchscreen units, each of which utilize intuitive, clear ergonomic displays. Supporting USB, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, the allnew Sonata also features voice recognition and smartphone integration. Further convenience is provided by the all-

new Sonata’s Smart Trunk function. Using the vehicle’s smart key, the system can be activated (in the user settings menu) to open the trunk automatically when the smart key is detected near the rear bumper for longer than three seconds. NVH Improving NVH levels over the previous generation Sonata was an important area of focus for Hyundai Motor engineers. A result is noticeably lower audible levels of noise for occupants of the all-new Sonata. Levels of engine and transmission NVH have been kept to a minimum through minimized acceleration noise and additional damping of the transmission mounting points. Audible (rumbling) road and engine (booming) noise is kept to an absolute minimum inside the all-new Sonata, thanks to soundpro-

ofing materials that have been used to reduce apertures through which noise could potentially be transmitted into the cabin. Across the available range of powertrains engineers reduced high-RPM booming, refined engine tones to provide a greater sense of smooth acceleration, and removed unwanted and intrusive additional noises. Powertrain The 2015 Sonata offers a wide range of engine and transmission options that deliver enhanced performance. With an emphasis on practicality, the powertrains of all-new Sonata have been carefully engineered and tuned for precise power delivery and maximum refinement. A range of MPi and GDi engines deliver maximum drivability in all driving conditions, thanks to improvements that mean plenti-

ful torque and power are available across a wider range of engine speeds. Carefullymatched smooth-shifting transmissions ensure maximum availability of full engine output and contribute to a smooth and relaxing ride for occupants. While the all-new Sonata is equipped with 2.0 CVVL, 2.4 GDi, 2.0 LPi for the Korean market, variations will vary, depending on each market.

Third stage of a journey started in 2009 and continued in 2012, Around The World 2014-2015 brings to an end a travel experience that also aims to be an original way of looking at the world. It’s not just an adventure, a showdown or an organizational challenge. This is a proposal for a unique journey, split up into seven different experiences. Different for itinerary and participants, for time and places, but all gathered together by one purpose, one single objective.

THE FIRST STAGE IS IN THE BOOKS

T

he two Eurasia S.p.A. cars (the Great Wall importer for Italy) protagonists of “Around the World 2014-2015” have completed the first of seven stages in mid-July. This charity world tour has been organized by the team “7milamiglialontano” as seven are the charities that alternate in this extraordinary adventure aboard the new Steed 5 TDI and the new SUV Great Wall H6.

The two vehicles used are both turbo diesel: 2.0 4x4 with 143 hp and 305 Nm of torque for the Steed and 310 Nm for the Great Wall H6. Both the cars are facing the adventure in a strictly standard setup, demonstrating the reliability of the Asian products for Europe built in the Bulgarian factory of Lovech.

THE FIRST STAGE IS IN THE BOOKS

T

he first stage was completed under the banner of the ANT foundation, always engaged in the care and support of people suffering from cancer. On board the two Great Wall vehicles, the ANT crew has reached Almaty, Kazakhstan, starting from Brescia (Italy) and driving through Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Ukraine and Turkey, then driving along the shores of the Black Sea retracing the ancient Silk Road through Iran and Turkmenistan. On July 15, the vehicles were been passed to the Emergency association, which then began the crossing of the immense Asian continent through the places that once were

( the empire of Genghis Khan, the Gobi desert and then through China to Hong Kong, where the two Great Wall will be shipped to the Gulf of Alaska. You can travel together with the crews with your heart, buying miles from 20,00 â‚Ź at www.7milamiglialontano.com, that will be donated directly to the Associations. In addition to the charity effort, this is also a great test of endurance for a brand like Great Wall, which is slowly entering the western market with reliable products, technology and especially with very competitive prices.

THE LEGENDARY JOURNEY

(

I

n 1989 Land Rover embarked on an ambitious adventure to traverse the most demanding portion of the Continental Divide in Colorado. The 1989 Great Divide Expedition (all these pictures are from that journey) was the launch event for the 1990 Range Rover. With the Rocky Mountains as the backdrop, a caravan of stock Range Rover vehicles navigated their way along a route that took nearly two years to develop. Now 25 years later, Land Rover is gearing up once again for the adventure of a lifetime, with a limited number of seats available for customers. To commemorate this legendary journey, a fleet of Range Rover vehicles will travel nearly 1,000 miles of unpaved roads and 4x4 trails along a portion of the original Great Divide route. Throughout this expedition, participants will navigate narrow rocky trails with steep drop-offs and mountain passes over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters). Using stock 2014 Range Rover vehicles with no special modifications, Land Rover will demonstrate its continued leadership at providing off-road capability with exceptional luxury. “The story of Land Rover has long been written on mountain passes and remote trails,” said Kim McCullough, Brand Vice President of Land Rover North America. “By commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Great Divide and of Tread Lightly!, Land Rover reaffirms its continued commitment to off-road capability and environmental responsibility.” Land Rover supports responsible off-road practices as a founding partner and continued supporter of Tread Lightly!, a national non-profit organization developed by the U.S. Forest Service. Also celebrating its 25th anniversary, Tread Lightly! aims to promote safe and responsible off-road driving through education and stewardship programs.

In honor of both anniversaries, Land Rover North America will auction a fully restored 1990 Range Rover Great Divide Replica in support of Tread Lightly!. This vehicle will be sold in partnership with eBay Motors and the proceeds of the charity auction will support Tread Lightly! in its goal to promote good stewardship of the outdoors. The charity auction kicks off August 4th and ends August 14th. The winner will also be the guest of Land Rover on the 2014 Expedition. CGM

A sophisticated standard safety package and an innovative IntelliSafe solutions make tricky parking and tight manoeuvres easy and safe

DESIGNED AROUND THE DRIVER

olvo Cars’ all-new XC90 – which will be revealed in August – will offer the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. The new technologies will take the company a significant step closer to its vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020. The standard safety package on the allwheel drive, seven seat premium SUV will include two world first safety technologies: a run-off road protection package and auto brake at intersection capability. These innovations will form part of a suite of safety features that will make the all-new XC90 one of the safest cars ever made. Run-off road protection Run-off road is a common accident type with different causes, such as driver distraction, fatigue or poor weather conditions. For example, half of all traffic fatalities in the United States are road departure accidents, while in Sweden, single-vehicle accidents involve one third of all fatal and severe injury crashes with passenger cars. Even though there are currently no regulatory or rating tests to examine a car’s ability to handle run-off road accidents, the company has decided to develop the technology to protect occupants should these situations occur. Volvo Cars developed Safe Positioning to address these situations. The Safe Positioning capability means that in a run-off road scenario, the all-new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. The belts are firmly tightened as long as the car is in motion.

To help prevent spine injuries, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forcesthat can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain. The solution is capable of reducing the vertical occupant forces by up to one third. This counteracts spine injuries, which are serious and relatively frequent consequences of these situations. Auto brake at intersections The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car. This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher. The all-new Volvo XC90 detects a potential crash and brakes automatically in order to avoid a collision or mitigate the consequences of a crash. Designed around modern car buyers’ ex-

pectations of smart functionality, the all-new Volvo XC90 also features a set of innovative solutions that make tricky parking situations and manoeuvring in tight spaces easy. The IntelliSafe support technologies include an extended Park Assist Pilot, which now also offers automatic reversing into a parking bay as well as entering and exiting a parallel parking spot. The XC90 can also display a digitally created bird’s-eye view of the 360° area around the car on the large centre screen. “Several studies by research institutes reveal that up to two-thirds of interviewed motorists feel uncomfortable in tight parking situations. Options such as the extended Park Assist Pilot and bird’s-eye view function turn these potentially stressful situations into comfortable, precise and safe manoeuvring,” says Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group.

(

DESIGNED AROUND THE DRIVER

(

The further-developed Park Assist Pilot facilitates both parallel and bay parking by taking over and operating the steering wheel while the driver handles the gearbox and controls the car’s speed. Ultrasonic sensors detect the parking space The parking manoeuvre is based on information from twelve ultrasonic sensors around the car. When the driver activates the Park Assist Pilot in a parallel parking situation, the sensors start to scan the side of the car for empty parking slots. When a parking

slot measuring a minimum of 1.2 times the car’s length is detected, the driver is notified by an audible signal and a message in the instrument cluster. In a bay parking situation, the slot needs to be the width of the car plus one metre. The display then guides the driver step by step via texts and animations in the instrument cluster until the car is parked. A bird’s-eye view from above the car The all-new XC90 also features a 360° Surround View that gives the driver a bird’s-eye view, an overview of the surrounding area, seen from a point above the car.

This bird’s-eye view is enabled by four concealed fish-eye cameras – one integrated into the front, one integrated in each of the door mirrors and one fitted above the rear number plate. The 360° Surround View also gives the driver comfortable access to other views of the surrounding area such as front, rear and side views. “The 360° Surround View is exceptionally useful in situations where the driver’s direct view is obstructed, such as leaving a tight driveway with obstacles on the sides or when reversing towards a trailer or caravan,” says

Peter Mertens. “360° Surround View also provides great support during parking, for instance when you want to make sure that all parts of the car are within the lines of a parking spot.” Cross Traffic Alert The outstanding IntelliSafe solutions in the all-new XC90 also include Cross Traffic Alert, which covers the driver’s back when reversing out of a parking space. It warns of approaching traffic up to 30 metres on each side, alerting the driver with an audible signal and a warning on the centre screen.

The birth of motor sport 120 years

July 1894: the fir

The reliability test drive from Paris to Rouen paved the way for the unique tradition of 120Â years of MercedesBenz motor sport history. But the winners of the race from Paris to Rouen were not only the vehicles from Panhard & Levassor and Peugeot, but the motor car with a combustion engine per se. After all, on the 126-kilometrelong route, the motor vehicle powered by the fast-running Daimler engine demonstrated its superiority over road-going vehicles with other propulsion systems.

T

his magic moment would change mobility for ever: “How can you travel other than in an motor car?” is how on 23 July the newspaper “Le Petit Journal”, organiser of the competition, enthusiastically summed up the result of the competition, as it looked forward to the future with excitement and anticipation. The first motor car race in history, which took place on 22 July 1894 over the 126-kilometre route from Paris to Rouen, was not just about speed. Rather the aim was for vehicles to demonstrate their excellent roadgoing credentials as part of the competition organised by the French daily newspaper “Le Petit Journal”: the vehicle to win would be the one that most effectively fulfilled the criteria, “to be easy to operate for the competitors without any danger and not too expensive to run” (« être sans danger, aisément maniable pour les voyageurs et de ne pas coûter trop cher sur la route »). Safety, ease of operation and transparent costs: those were the specialities of the motor car with fast-running combustion engine, at that point just eight years old, compared to steam technology in particular. And so the brands Panhard & Levassor and Peuge-

ot took away the (shared) first prize of 5,000 francs for their vehicles equipped with Daimler engines. The jurors singled out Daimler’s innovativeness as especially noteworthy: “... The Daimler engine, developed by a skilled engineer from Württemberg; Mr Daimler – who was present yesterday in Rouen to share in the triumph of his work – has turned petroleum or gasoline fuel into a practical solution.” Birth of motor sport alongside the Bois de Boulogne 21 vehicles in total were approved for the race from Paris to Rouen. They had to go through test drives on the three days before the final competition to qualify to take part in the long-distance race. From 7 a.m. on 22 July 1894, the vehicles lined up on the starting grid at the Porte Maillot in the Paris district of Neuilly sur Seine, located right next to the Bois de Boulogne. The start on the Boulevard Maillot was scheduled for “8 o’clock sharp” and the steam tractor of Count de Dion with its single-axle passenger trailer in tow was the first vehicle to set off at 8.01 a.m., with the remaining vehicles following at intervals of 30 seconds.

Alfred Vacheron’s vehicle with petrol engine. Vacheron was awarded joint 4th place in the contest

The road had not been specially cordoned off for the reliability test drive. The traffic proved very heavy particularly after the start because the extensive reporting in the run-up to the race had attracted thousands of spectators; to compound matters other vehicles were mingling among the starters: “The convoy is led, flanked and pursued by numerous cyclists, also by a number of vehicles with a mechanical propulsion system which are tackling the route as amateurs.” The motorised spectators also included Gottlieb Daimler and his son Paul, who were excitedly following this day that would be so important for their engine. 20 years later, Paul Daimler reminisced in an article for the “Allgemeine Automobil-Zeitung” on the diverse starting line-up: “The race cars, with disparate shapes, types and sizes, heavy steam carriages with trailers with huge wheels, competed with the lightest steam-powered three-wheelers, and these in turn with petrol-engined cars...We ourselves accompanied the race in our own vehicle. It was a curious spectacle seeing these disparate

vehicle types racing against each other: the stokers on the heavy steamers, dripping with perspiration and covered with soot, working hard to put on fuel; the drivers of the small steam-powered three-wheelers keeping a watchful eye on the pressure and water level in the small, skilfully fitted tubular boiler and regulating the oil firing; and then in contrast to all that the drivers of the petrol- and paraffin-powered cars sitting calmly in the driver’s seat, operating a lever now and again, as if they were simply out for a pleasure trip – an utterly peculiar image of contrasts that has remained with me ever since.” From Paris the route took them to Mantes where the competitors stopped for lunch. Suitably refreshed, it was then on towards Rouen where the first vehicle (de Dion) arrived at 5.40 p.m. Two Peugeot cars followed with the 2.6 kW (3.5 hp) Daimler two-cylinder Vengine (Albert Lemaitre/5.45 p.m., Auguste Doriot/5.50 p.m.) and two other Panhard & Levassor vehicles, which were also powered

by Daimler engines (Paul Panhard/6.03 p.m., Emile Levassor/6.30 p.m.). The “Système Daimler” was a two-cylinder V-engine built under licence in France according to Gottlieb Daimler’s original plans. 17 out of the 21 starters crossed the finishing line – 9 of them fitted with Daimler engines. The engineer Emile Roger, starting in a Benz vehicle with an output of 3.7 kW (5 hp), was the 14th to cross the finishing line. In 1888, he became the sole agent for Benz vehicles and engines in France, but deliberately chose to avoid mentioning the origins of the Mannheim-based motor car when registering for the competition from Paris to Rouen in 1894. Roger took 5th place in the competition and in the final report, which was published in the “Le Petit Journal” on 24 July 1894, was singled out for praise by virtue of the “successful improvements to the motor car with petrol engine”.

From Paris to Rouen the vehicles from Panhard & Levassor with a Daimler V2 engine really proved themselves. The French manufacturer was awarded joint first prize in the competition, together with Peugeot

(

THE BIRTH OF MOTOR SPORT

(

While Roger imported complete Benz vehicles, Daimler initially provided engine technology expertise for the French motor car manufacturer: as early as 1887, Gottlieb Daimler was negotiating with Edouard Sarazin from Paris about marketing his developments on French territory. Sarazin in turn agreed with businessman Emile Levassor that the latter would build the Daimler engines under licence. Following Sarazin’s untimely death, his wife Madame Louise – she would later marry Levassor – carried on the business, thus laying the foundations for the French motor car industry. The engines built by Panhard & Levassor from 1889 onwards accelerated the development of the motor car in France. The motor car triumphed over the steam carriage The steam-powered tractor of Count JulesAlbert de Dion, which from a modern-day perspective seems utterly bizarre, may well have

completed the route in the shortest time, but fulfilled the rules and regulations much less effectively than the more sophisticated motor cars. Other steam-powered vehicles also took part in the competition; three of these, however, failed to complete the 126-kilometre route with its poor road conditions.

A motor car from Panhard & Levassor with Daimler engine taking part in the first car race between Paris and Rouen on 22 July 1894

Races like the “Concours du Petit Journal” held in 1894 have a long tradition in France: Pierre Giffard, publisher of the “Petit Journal” and inventor of the automotive reliability test from Paris to Rouen, also organised the Paris–Brest–Paris cycle race (1891) and the Paris marathon (1896). Yet the motor car race in July 1894 to find the most reliable vehicle took on a dimension that went beyond sport – it was about redefining mobility on the road, explained the “Petit Journal” in December 1893 with its announcement of the ”Competition for horseless vehicles, with mechanical propulsion”. The competition was designed to help accomplish one of the great unsolved tasks faced by engineers: “At the end of the 19th century, human inventiveness, which in less than 100 years has created steam power, gas, electricity, and other types of propulsion, has still not found a mechanical process for replacing horses as the propulsion for vehicles.” Viewed from this perspective, the race from Paris to Rouen marked both the birth of motor sport and the final of the competition between the various propulsion systems – from which the motor car would emerge as the undisputed winner. And quite incidentally, the future

The Peugeot from Albert Lemaître (starting number 65), pictured on the left-hand rear seat Adolphe Clément. The Peugeot with an engine manufactured under licence from Daimler was the first vehicle with a combustion engine to finish the race, crossing the line in second

name of the vehicle would be coined in the media reports: whereas the “Petit Journal” was still referring to “horseless carriages with mechanical propulsion” in 1893, the reporters in July 1894 were already writing about “voiture automotrice” and “automobile” in reference to the race. Various vehicles, each powered with Daimler engines, notched up important victories in the ensuing years, thus underpinning the excellent reputation of cutting-edge technology from Stuttgart – including in the race from Paris to Bordeaux in June 1895, which was regarded as the first motor car race in the proper sense. Many other legendary race victories recorded in France form part of the magic moments of 120 years of Mercedes-Benz motor sport: these include Daimler’s dominance in the Nice Race Week 1901, which gave rise to the brand name Mercedes. Rallycross is a form of circuit racing on a track with mixed surfaces, usually asphalt and gravel. This racing discipline, thanks to its spectacular races, has always found lot of support among motorsport fans but in the latest years it has gained more and more popularity also among the general public.

This year, there are two main series featuring rallycross races: the FIA World Rallycross Championship, also known as RX, and the Global Rallycross, with a calendar of races in the USA only. Both championships see rally cars with up to 600hp battling in a series of heat races that decide which drivers will participate in the main event.

Official teams and superstars drivers, such as Former Formula One Nelson Piquets Jr. and Markus Winkelhock, Ken Block, Petter Solberg or double DTM Champion Mattias Ekstrom have been attracted in participating in this year’s events ‌ driving even more attention to both series which now have a worldwide TV coverage and an actively growing community of fans!

Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R Captures GTLM Win at Brickyard Grand Prix SRT Motorsports teammates Kuno Wittmer and Jonathan Bomarito co-drove to a major victory in the No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R in the Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday July 25. Closing-driver Bomarito took the lead just under an hour from the race’s end and crossed the finish line with a 10.789-second margin of victory. The win, which came in the first major race appearance for the Dodge Viper SRT at Indianapolis, was the team’s first in the new IMSA TUDOR

United SportsCar Championship and second since returning to major sports car racing in 2012. Wittmer started from third on the grid and overcame a few bumps, body blows and close calls to the No. 93 in a very aggressive opening hour of the race. He pitted 45 minutes into the race from fourth place and Bomarito quickly moved into contention for the lead during a double driving stint to the finish. He moved into the lead just before the team’s final stop and great pit work by the SRT Motorsports

crew kept him in first place when he returned to the track to take the checkered flag. The milestone Indianapolis victory continues a recent run of success for SRT Motorsports. Indy marked the third-straight race in which at least one GTLM Viper reached the victory lane podium, and they came to the Brickyard with a two-race double-podium streak that saw SRT finish second and third in the preceding races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and the Sahlen’s

Six Hours of The Glen. Wittmer also scored a one-off GT victory in a Viper GT3-R in last Sunday’s World Challenge race on the streets of Toronto. Ben Keating and Jeroen Bleekemolen also won in the GTD class in a GT3-R at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, in addition to a third-place class finish today. The first SRT Motorsports victory came when Farnbacher and Goossens won last year at Wisconsin’s Road America, which is the next race on the 2014 IMSA TUDOR Championship schedule.

Hot news from South Africa Nicholas van Weely recently won both races in the Formula Volkswagen South Africa in East London. The South African had to concede defeat to compatriot Robert Wolk in qualifying, but then hit back in impressive style during the two races. In the first race he crossed the finishing line with only a one-second lead over Matthew Swanepoel (ZA), Jason Campos (also ZA) was third. In the second race Van Weely won with a two-second advantage ahead of Werner Scholtz (ZA) and Matthew Merton (ZA) crossed the finish a further half a second back in third place. On the Volkswagen Cup side Dewald Brummer and Matthew Hodges (both ZA) won the two races during the fourth race weekend of the Engen Volkswagen Cup South Africa in East London. Hodges, who started third on the grid, was victorious in the first race over six laps ahead of compatriots Daniel Rowe and Brummer. The latter secured victory in the second race over ten laps and assigned the 15-year old Sheldon van der Linde (ZA) and Hodges to places second and third respectively.

After dropping to sixth position after the turbulent Saturday evening, René Rast engaged a fierce battle with the BMW Z4 of Lucas Luhr (GER), Dirk Werner (GER), Markus

Fässler, Lotterer, Treluyer - Audi R8 LMS

Paltalla (FIN), finally capturing the overall first place with 75 minutes to go. The BMW squad settled into second position. Third and fourth were other two Audi R8 LMS with Christopher Mies (GER), James Nash (GBR), Frank Stippler (GER) and the Sainteloc team trio of Grégory Guilvert (FRA), Stéphane Ortelli (MON) and Edward Sandström (SWE). The first Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 finished fifth with Maximilian Buhk (GER), Maximilian Götz (GER) and Jazeman Jaafar (MAS).

Ferrari conquered both the ProAm class and the gentleman driver (GTR) class with two AF Corse teams. Niek Hommerson (NED), Louis Machiels (BEL), Andrea Bertolini (ITA) and Marco Cioci (ITA) were able to overcome an unlucky puncture at the beginning of the race with a fast consistent pace during the night, particularly by the two Italian drivers, while Peter Mann (USA), Alexander Talkanista (BLR), Francisco Guedes (POR) and Cedric Mezard (FRA) were awarded the Gentlemen Trophy.

PIT STOP Romolo Liebchen, Head of Audi Sport customer commented: “Sincere congratulations to our winners and to our other teams, as well as to our challengers, who made maximum demands on us. Today, on clinching our third victory at Spa, we made a dream come true. We can’t expect more than that. And in such a competitive environment, victory is an exceptional feat. We again saw that the Audi R8 LMS ultra was the most reliable car. All customers finished without any problems. There was only one retirement, and that was due to an accident. Reliability is becoming an increasingly important criterion for our buyers to opt for the four rings.”

THE BATTLE OF THE ARDENNES!

PIT STOP This year’s Belgian marathon was plagued by several violent accidents. The first driver to hit the barriers at l’Eau Rouge was Vyacheslav Maleev. No severe consequences for him even if his Ferrari 458 could not rejoin the race. After the safety car was back to the pits Tim Mullen destroyed his McLaren at Blanchimont and had to be transported to a local hospital. Eau Rouge saw another accident when Andrew Howard’s Aston Martin hit Andrew Danyliw’ Ferrari that had stopped in the middle of the track after a spin. But the most serious accident that brought the race to a stop for about an hour happened at the Stavelot corners. Vadim Kogay and Marcus Mahy were involved in a huge crash that also involved a fire. It is still unclear what caused the incident. Mahy, who took the worse hit, had to be transported to the hospital by helicopter. He suffered a spinal fracture and is expecting a very long recovery period.

ENRICO’S NOTEBOOK www.enricozanarini.com

29 July 2014

My r e c i pe f or s uccess If F.1 bosses are looking for new ingredients to make F.1 more spectacular, they simply need to re-wind the tape of last sunday’s Hungarian GP to find some bloody good inspiration. The Budapest event has been the best GP so far this year with multiple race leaders swapping places for final victory. At flag fall, Ricciardo grabbed the highest step of the podium leaving behind a long stream of former world champions fighting for the rest of

the points. Daniel drove a perfect race (with a little help from the early safety car) and took home the second win for the Red Bull Team, leaving the quadruple world champion Vettel in the shade, again. Alonso was courageous and skilled in keeping both Mercedes honest and his brilliant performance brought the Ferrari back onto the scene for the immense pleasure of the Maranello fans around the world. If I were part of the Team in

charge of searching for ideas, my recipe for success to keep F.1 exciting is to be found in the elements which made the Hungarian GP a great race: 1) Keep even the level of performance of the Teams thus allowing more changes of leadership during the race and the Championship. The introduction of a BOP is a must. How to do it? I am afraid I have no technical solution for it, however the allocation of ballast on a scale for the point-getters of the previous race should be taken into consideration. 2) Encourage Teams to give young drivers the chance to show their true colors thus finding more Ricciardos. This may be done by letting F1 Teams field a third car for winning drivers of the F.3 and Gp2 Championships. 3) Make sure Ferrari stays up there with the stars. On my list of ingredients this may sound a little partisan, but it is a fact that when a Ferrari shines, the whole F.1 circus shines with it. How to do it? For the moment let’s keep Alonso in red!

EAST!

After grabbing public attention with the stunning new 2008 DKR, Team Peugeot-Total has finally lifted the lid on the inner workings of this muscular beast, which will take on the 4x4 brigade on the 2015 Dakar with just two driven wheels.

MEET THE BEAST!

Dunes, mountains, dry river beds, canyons, furnace-like temperatures, salt deserts, rough terrain, fesh-fesh sand… These are just some of the joys that await the 2008 DKR on the next Dakar Rally. To tackle this tremendous challenge, Team Peugeot-Total has followed a very daring technical path: “Much like we did at the Le Mans 24 Hours by electing to run a closed-cockpit car, we decided to adopt an innovative concept,” reveals Peugeot Sport Director Bruno Famin. “When it comes to crosscountry rallying, the biggest question is whether to run with four-wheel-drive or just two. After a detailed study of the question, we decided to go for twowheel drive transmission which

presents a number of interesting benefits.” This bold decision will enable the team to try to become the first to win the Dakar with two-wheel drive & diesel engine. In order to balance out the chances of the different solutions, the rules in effect compensate the inherent advantage of 4x4 vehicles by allowing two-wheel-drive machinery to benefit from certain advantages. Technical project manager Jean-Christophe Pallier summarises them: “In motorsport, weight is counter to performance. However, in the case of crosscountry rallying, two-wheel drive cars are allowed to be significantly lighter than 4x4s. They are also entitled to use bigger wheels

which provide them with a certain advantage when it comes to coping with the many pitfalls associated with this type of terrain. On top of that, they allow us to minimise the front overhang. The 2008 DKR can practically climb vertical walls! And that’s not all! Longer suspension travel – 460mm instead of 250mm – enhances its ability over dunes and when soaking up uneven ground. That’s a key asset on an event like the Dakar!” Another advantage of the larger wheel size is a system that enables the tyre pressures to be adjusted remotely from inside the cockpit upon entering a zone of dunes – a tactic that could yield a gain of precious minutes!

In order to exploit these benefits fully, Peugeot Sport’s engineers put their creativity to the test to come up with an extremely compact car. With its 340bhp, V6 twinturbo diesel mid-rear engine, the 2008 DKR resembles a muscular feline ready to pounce and soak up obstacles. “Fitting all of the vital assemblies into such a small space gave us quite a headache!” admits Pallier. “Small cars tend to perform more comfortably over twisty WRC-type stages, so this arrangement increases the potential of two-wheel drive cars in situations where the 4x4s tend to have the edge.” Beyond the conviction – expressed by Red Bull for the last two years – that twowheel-drive vehicles possess attractive qualities that shine through even across the most inhospitable of terrains, this technical approach also makes sense for the French manufacturer, as Bruno Famin explains: “Given that the production 2008 is a two-wheel-drive crossover equipped with Grip Control technology – which enables it to go just about anywhere – it is only right that the 2008 DKR derivative should similarly take on the challenges of the Dakar with just two-wheeldrive.” So all that now remains is to let it off the leash!

In his striking yellow MINI ALL4 Racing, Joan “Nani” Roma has won the sixth round of the 2014 FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies. After four demanding special stages and 666.13 competitive kilometres during the 2014 Baja Aragón the Spaniard and his co-driver Michel Périn claimed the victory for the Monster Energy X-raid Team ahead of team-mates Orlando Terranova/Moi Torrallardona, Martin Kaczmarski/Tappio Suominen and the current World Cup leader Vladimir Vasilyev/Konstantin Zhiltsov, who were also competing in MINI ALL4 Racing cars. For Roma it was also the fourth Baja Aragón victory of his career and a successful repeat of his 2013 Baja Aragón victory. “The Baja Aragón is always something special,” said Roma. “It is a home race for me, but in 2009 it was also the first rally I did for the X-raid Team – and I won it right away. Last year, it also was a trouble-free event for me. So being able to repeat last year’s victory definitely feels good.”

The 2014 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series regular season – which closed on july 19-20 with the Nurburgring 200 – was highlighted by an electrifying mix of close competition, tough racing, historical milestones and amazing action on track, which gifted thousands of fans all around Europe with countless, unique emotions. The Series is now setting for the playoffs – beginning in Italy on September 20-21 – which will award double points and promise to be even more suspenseful.

SCAR race. Two-time champion Ander Vilarino (#2 TFT-Banco Santander Chevrolet SS) leads the way with 3 wins, while Borja Garcia (#1 Ford Autolix Competition Ford Mustang), Frederic Gabillon (#12 Still Racing Chevrolet Camaro), Mathias Lauda (#66 DF-1 Racing by B66 Chevrolet Camaro), Eddie Chee-

race, nothing is decided yet and none of the top drivers can afford the slightest mistake in the last four races. Anthony Kumpen, whose PK Carsport equipe is occupying the top two positions in the Teams standings,

is leading the general ELITE 1 division classification at the end of four events in which he never reached the Victory Lane – despite going very close to it in Brands Hatch, where he came in a close second in the Sunday Race behind Vilarino – but he definitely was the more consistent, accumulating a total of 318 points (39,75 points average, almost equivalent to a fourth place in every race) with six top-5s and 8 top-10s. Behind him comes reigning champion Ander Vilarino, who despite 3 wins finds himself at a disadvantage before the playoffs for the first time in the young NASCAR Whelen Euro Series history. The Spaniard needs to close a 7-point gap after lo-

sing the championship lead due to an accident in the Nurburgring 200 and also retired from the Saturday Race in Valencia. Just one length behind Vilarino sits another Spanish driver: Borja Garcia. The 31-year-old Valencia native, always a contender for the top positions, won his first NASCAR race at the Nurburgring with a bold move on the fellow countryman that raised the tension between the two. The weekend continued with a contact in the Sunday Race that sent Vilarino into the barriers and will definitely put more pressure on the battle for the title. Frederic Gabillon closes this ex-

tremely close quartet after recovering, top-5 after top-5, from the last place in the Valencia Saturday Race. His worst result since the season opener is the sixth place in the Sunday Race at  Brands Hatch and he closed the regular season with a dominating win at the Nurburgring. Mathias Lauda rounds up the top-5 with 23 point to recover on Kumpen after winning at Tours Speedway an historic race – the first ever NASCAR Whelen Euro Series oval race in the rain – thanks to 3 spectacular passes on the outside in the last 10 laps on the renewed french circuit, which this year became a true NASCAR short track with the addition of a 10.5-degrees banking in turns 1 and 2.

Thomas Ferrando

NASCAR UNIQUE EXCITEMENT Two Italians are leading the ELITE 1 division Trophies. Eddie Cheever, who won a thrilling Saturday Race in Brands Hatch, leads the Jerome Sarran Trophy, sits sixth in the standings, just 43 points behind Kumpen and, thanks to his 2 poles, is the best candidate to win the Race And Win Pole Award at the end of the season. Tenth in points, Fabrizio Armetta (#31 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS) is on top of the Challenger Trophy classification.

ELITE 2 The ELITE 2 division regular season was dominated by rookies. Four different drivers – Thomas Ferrando (#22 Overdrive Chevrolet Camaro), Denis Dupont (#32 RCP - Marc VDS Toyota Camry), Wilfried Boucenna (#33 Overdrive Chevrolet Camaro) and Neal Van Vaerenbergh (#11 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS) – won in the regular season, all sweeping the weekends, and all but Boucenna, the 2009 Series champion, are also in their first year in Euro NASCAR, competing for the Rookie Cup. Four rookies are on top of the general classification. The amazing 16-year old Thomas Ferrando, who is also part of the NWES developmental Young Drivers Program and is in his first season outside karting, took the points lead thanks to two hard-fought wins at the Nurburgring. The Frenchman has just two points separating

him from Belgian Maxime Dumarey (#24 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS), who scored 6 top-5s and 8 top-10s in the regular season, never finishing worse than sixth. Philipp Lietz (#86 TB Renauer Motorsport Ford Mustang) made highlevel consistency his best weapon in the regular season and steadily progressed lately to climb on the third step of the podium at the end of the Sunday Race in Germany. The Austrian is 25 points behind Ferrando. The rookie quartet leading the championship is closed by Denis Dupont, 21 years old from Belgium, who was extremely fast in the first four events and won the two Tours Speedway races in his debut on an oval track. Italian Simone Laureti (#51 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS) rounds up the top-5, 66 points behind Ferrando. RGM

Formula 3 is the “classic” and oldest “school” on the way to Formula One. Today many excellent Formula 3 series are organized around the world and from the car’s side the Italian manufacturer Dallara is confirming his absolute domination

F3 vs F3 In the mind of every European racecar driver Formula 3 represents the fundamental step towards a professional career in the single-seater racing scene. Young talents from minor racing series or even go-kart racing aspire to a full season in one of the many Formula 3 championships in order to show what they are made of on the most well recognized and preparatory racecar in the world. Almost every Formula 1 champion, from the past and present times, has gained experience in Formula 3, many of them even started to battle between themselves at a young age before delighting huge crowds with memorable overtaking maneuvers in the top racing formula.

PIT STOP Formula 3 is definitely the most successful junior series to have ever hit the world’s race tracks. In addition to the aforementioned Japanese and Brazilian series, a great tradition resides in the British Formula 3 series that still gathers much of attention for its historic heritage. Also raced in Europe are the German Formula 3 Championship and the EuroFormula Open, the latter based in Spain but with races all across the continent.

The Macau Grand Prix is not the only Formula 3 event raced on a street circuit (Pau in France and Nurnberg in Germany are two street races included in the European Championship) but it is the last great “classic” to be held as a single racing weekend, outside of any championship’s calendar. But the fascinating streets of Macau and the historic value of the race always attract the best drivers in the sport for one of the most unique shows in racing.

In the latest years the European Formula 3 has been revamped by the FIA, and thanks to the work of former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger (who is responsible for the championship) the series is now once again under the spotlight in the motorsport world. This doesn’t prevent from having many other excellent Formula 3 series all around the world. National series such as the Japanese and Brazilian Formula 3 Championships keep up their long lasting tradition of competitiveness by launching young talents almost on a yearly basis.
