LUXURY IN

MOTION With the self-driving luxury sedan F 015 Luxury in Motion, Mercedes-Benz shows how the automobile is changing from a means of transportation to a private retreating space. Offering maximum space in a lounge-like interior, the F 015 elevates comfort and luxury to a new level. One key aspect of the research vehicle is the continuous exchange of information between vehicle, passengers, and the outside world

LUXURY IN MOTION

(

T

he F 015 Luxury in Motion is the visionary answer of Mercedes-Benz to a rapidly changing world. By 2030, the number of mega-cities with more than 10 million inhabitants will increase from about 30 to over 40. “The single most important luxury goods of the 21st century are private space and time,” says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and Head of MercedesBenz Cars. “Autonomously driving cars by Mercedes-Benz shall offer exactly that. With the F 015 Luxury in Motion, this revolutionary concept of mobility becomes tangible for the first time.” Progressing from the self-propelled (“automotive”) to the self-reliant (“autonomous”) vehicle, Mercedes-Benz as a pioneer goes far beyond the purely technical realization of automated driving. People are always at the centre of such considerations. Just as the 1886 Benz Patent Motor Car and its successors revolutionized personal mobility and, as a consequence, society as a whole, the first self-driving cars will also bring about major changes. The pivotal feature of the innovative interior concept is the variable seating system, with four rotating lounge chairs that allow a faceto-face seat configuration. All four passengers can use their time aboard to work, to relax or to communicate. In order to make getting in and out of the car easier, the electrically powered seats also swing outwards by 30 degrees as soon as the doors are opened.

One key aspect of the research vehicle is the continuous exchange of information between vehicle, passengers and the outside world. This is facilitated by six display screens harmoniously integrated into the instrument panel and the rear and side panels, which turn the interior of the F 015 Luxury in Motion into a digital arena. Passengers can interact intuitively with the connected vehicle

through gestures, eye-tracking or by touching the high-resolution screens. Employing laser projection and LED displays, the electrically propelled F 015 Luxury in Motion establishes contact to the outside world and is a real social partner in traffic.

(

LUXURY IN MOTION

Dr Zetsche: “Already two years ago, with the S 500 INTELLIGENT DRIVE we showed on the historical route BerthaBenz took in 1888 that we have the technology which makes autonomous driving reality in everyday traffic. We have a master plan in place to take the big leap required getting from technically feasible to commercially viable. The F 015 Luxury in Motion demonstrates where this may take us.

T

he Prancing Horse opens a new chapter in its 8-cylinder history. The new berlinetta brilliantly encapsulates Ferrari’s experience in both F1 and the WEC and also exploits to the full the know-how gleaned by Ferrari technicians over the last decade through the XX programme. The Ferrari 488 GTB’s new 3902 cc V8 turbo unleashes 670 cv at 8,000 rpm along with 760 Nm of maximum torque in seventh gear and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 se-

conds at 2,000 rpm. These figures are sufficient to allow the Ferrari 488 GTB to accelerate from 0-200 km/h in an astonishing 8.3 seconds. The gearbox features Variable Torque Management which unleashes the engine’s massive torque smoothly and powerfully right across the rev range, while specific gear ratios deliver incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle. As is always the case, Ferrari’s engineers have dedicated great attention to perfecting the 488 GTB’s sound, creating

a new soundtrack that is full, clear and totally distinctive, as expected from any Prancing Horse engine. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new car features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. Its large signature air intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter. The wide front spoiler features a double profile to improve the thermal efficiency of the radiators positioned at the sides.

he 2015 Dream Cars Show in Brussels provides the perfect showcase for one of the latest creations from Maranello’s Tailor Made bespoke personalisation programme. The F12berlinetta in question, displayed by Ferrari and Francorchamps Motors, pays homage to the Ecurie Francorchamps team, specifically the 250 GTO in which Lucien Bianchi and Georges Berger won the 1964 Tour de France. The V12 sports an Argento Auteil body with a triple-layer cross-stripe on its bonnet that is a modern take on the original Modena yellow used by the Ecurie Francorchamps. The interiors are mostly black with tobacco Soul leather seat upholstery for a vintage look. However, technical materials also make an appearance, most notably for the mats and boot trim which are in SuperFabric, a tough, super-grippy “bulletproof” material featuring a 3D design developed exclusively for Ferrari. The F12berlinetta’s ceiling liner and side panels are in Mycro Prestige, a soft, light, water-repellent and breathable fabric. The floor is triangularpattern metal as per the classic cars of the past. The interior finish is bodywork-colour aluminium with yellow detailing on the bridge and door handles.

DONKERVOORT INTRODUCES D8 GTO BIL

LSTER BERG EDITION AS LIMITED SERIES

Donkervoort hinted at this development at the end of December 2014. In honour of the feats achieved in 2014, which include breaking the lap record for street-legal production cars at the Bilster Berg circuit, Donkervoort introduced a special edition of the D8 GTO: the Donkervoort D8 GTO Bilster Berg Edition

(

D8 GTO BILSTER BERG EDITION

(

T

his special edition is instantly recognisable thanks to the unique design of the nose, created by the Donkervoort design team. The dark nose section, made entirely of carbon fibre, gives it an even ‘meaner’ look and builds on the ‘beastly’ nose design concept found on the existing D8 GTO.

Technical developments The D8 GTO Bilster Berg Edition features the latest technical advances. Although the speed of the D8 GTO has already been established, it was nevertheless possible to achieve additional speed and grip based on a carefully chosen Performance Plus specification, together with the further development and fine-tuning in the areas of chassis and road-handling. Further improvements were also made to the power plant, so the engine now provides even better throttle response and an ultra light flywheel and race clutch make the engine even livelier. A further 10 kg shaved off the total weight now lightens the Audi 2.5L R5 TFSI engine’s task of propelling the GTO to those stunning performances. A new shock absorber has been developed in collaboration with Intrax especially for the Bilster Berg Edition. To convert the heavier setting of the new dampers and springs to more grip, an extra roll cage construction was designed for even greater torsional stiffness in the chassis. A nice bonus of this development is that this newly engineered roll cage has also contributed to a higher level of passive safety.

(

D8 GTO BILSTER BERG EDITION

(

(

D8 GTO BILSTER BERG EDITION

(

This GTO is also equipped with specially developed, limited series production, semislick tyres, stemming from the collaboration with tyre manufacturer Hankook. To handle the extra roll generated by these tyres, this D8 GTO is also fitted with an anti-roll bar at the rear, complementing the one that was already present at the front. Unique series The Donkervoort D8 GTO Bilster Berg Edition is not only recognisable from the design of the nose but also stands apart from the current range of offerings in many other areas. This version, for example, has a special emblem for instant identification, and the dashboard is decorated with a type plate bearing the number and name of the owner of the car. The new version also includes the data logging display, with LCD and GPS, integrated into the dashboard. In addition, even more carbon fibre alternatives can be ordered for visible interior and exterior parts, which are both beneficial to the total weight and pleasing to the eye. Additional weight savings have also been achieved in the interior, through the use of ultra-light carpet, carbon fibre seats and special leather. Obviously, this unique version is a full options model, giving the buyer complete freedom of choice for the interior and exterior colours. The D8 GTO Bilster Berg Edition will be built in a limited series of just 14 cars, a number that represents the successful year 2014. Price from â‚Ź194,000 including 21% VAT.

The Jeep® brand suspends traffic on downtown Vancouver city street and takes unsuspectingdrivers on a surprise detour in uniquely own-able approach to highlight versatility and real-world capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee

RIVER IN THE CITY

T

he Jeep brand suspended traffic on an unassuming city street in Vancouver, amazing city-dwellers by taking unsuspecting drivers by surprise by converting an entire block into a forest with a wild mountain river, brought to life with snowbanks, boulders, rocks, sand/gravel, moss, live fir trees and two wolves. The unique approach was accomplished to introduce drivers to the versatility and real-world capability of the Jeep Cherokee. The “River in the City” commercial video, which debuted on US television January 4, unfolds as unsuspecting drivers were recruited to test the Jeep Cherokee by following directions from its navigation system throughout downtown Vancouver. Following the detour, the directions soon led them to the “river in the city” and the drivers were actually a part of the real-life demonstration of the vast, wide range of capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee. The commercial is further brought to life with captivating images of the drivers in the Jeep Cherokee confronting boulders and gravel amidst a raging river, all set against downtown parking meters and people moving down escalators in city buildings as the work day unfolds. “We wanted to bring to life the real world capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee in a unique approach,” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, FCA - Global. “So how do you do that? By taking what is essentially an experiential event where unsuspecting drivers are being filmed navigating a busy metropolitan street that has been turned into a fully functional mountain river and let them experience the capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee for themselves. Our ‘River in the City’ takes an untraditional approach to create a powerful statement that the Jeep Cherokee can handle anything a city throws at it.”

The “River in the City” shoot took place from June 14 - June 18, 2014. The set was built and produced three days prior to the filming of the commercial. It took place on 400 Granville Street in downtown Vancouver, Canada. Materials included: • 1,000,000 pounds of boulders, rocks and sand (2,500 sand bags), used throughout the set to break up water flow and give surface disturbance • Water (250,000 gallons) was pumped onto the street with water pumps hidden in the alley and placed in key spots. (The water was recycled using a closed water system that pumped water from the end of the street back to the top. The water was eventually discharged down the street, into Vancouver Harbor.) • 400,000 pounds of snow - the snowbank was made of snow blanket and fish-ice • Logs, sticks, moss, and 80 fir/hemlock trees lined/covered the street. (The trees were boxed and returned to the nursery and boulders, gravel and other materials were also repurposed.) • Two wolves were on set. (The domesticated, mixed-breed wolves were made available from the Animal Insight for Film and TV. A representative from the American Humane Association was on set to attest that the wolves were treated humanely and procedures were followed. Observers were able to take pictures with the animals.) B

efore this January auction, the legendary Super Snake last changed hands at the 2007 Barrett-Jackson sale in Scottsdale and has been in the care of collector Ron Pratte. Shelby and Pratte became friends through their mutual infatuation with American ingenuity and all things automotive. Carroll Shelby, still alive at the time of the sale, spoke clearly about the car’s rarity and performance. “This is the only one like it. I’ve been clocked doing 190 mph in this car.” Carroll Shelby claimed his 800 horsepower Super Snake would run from 0-60 in around 3.2 seconds. Nearly a half-century later, only a handful of modern supercars can achieve that short acceleration time. Even more astounding, modern cars employ traction control, fuel injection and other electronic aids to achieve the same goal. Carroll Shelby loved to ask, “What if…” and he insisted on pushing the design envelope. The Super Snake, therefore, is so much more than just metal and rubber. It’s a fire-breathing example of Carroll Shelby’s ability to package extreme performance into real world, functional performance cars. This car, a twin-supercharged 427 cubic inch 190 mph roadster with bulging bodywork, is Carroll Shelby’s ultimate proof of concept. In the stratospheres of the collector car world, rarity is paramount. While there was a second Super Snake, it was destroyed in 1969 when Tony Maxey, its ill-fated owner, lost control and drove off a cliff. The entire car, including the body and frame, were destroyed. As such, Carroll Shelby’s personal car, CSX3015, is truly the one and only Cobra Super Snake in existence.

On January 17, 2015, just a few days after what would have been Carroll Shelby’s 92nd birthday, Carroll Shelby’s personal Cobra 427 Super Snake once again crossed the BarrettJackson auction block with millions of people watching in person and on live television. The car has been sold for 5.1 million USD dollars

(

Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car AuctionsTM, reached historic highs during the Scottsdale auction at WestWorld from Jan. 10-18, 2015. During the 10day auction, Barrett-Jackson recorded more than $130 million in vehicle sales (unaudited) and a world record $6.55 million in automobilia sales (unaudited), making it the highest auction in sales to date. The Ron Pratte Collection alone brought in over $40.44 million in vehicle and automobilia sales.

Though the Cobra Super Snake is considered a street legal “S/C” car, CSX3015 was originally built to full competition specs for PR use in Europe. As such it is quite different from its standard, semi-competition brethren. Underneath the skin, competition Cobras feature reinforced frames and increased track width as well as oversized fuel tanks and heavy-duty Girling brakes. Voluptuous flares cover the massive knock-off wheels and Goodyear tires. Further exterior mods include front and rear jacking points, a roll bar, oil coolers, and un-baffled side pipes. Upon its return from Europe, Shelby American modified CSX3015 just enough to make it street legal. The most obvious addition is its windshield. Imagine being Carroll Shelby at that point in time. He must have proclaimed that he wanted to keep CSX3015 for himself. Likewise, there was “shop talk” about adding two Paxton superchargers to a 427. That notion must have raised some eyebrows—even amongst the seasoned Shelby American staff. Was the idea sheer madness or genius? What modifications would be required to mount the two superchargers? Fabrication would be required for brackets and belt drives. The dual four-barrel intake manifold, Holley carburetors and Paxton air inlets added significant height to the engine package. Hood clearance was addressed by way of a custom fabricated, oversized hood scoop. Lastly, the Shelby American team would need to consider harnessing all of that power. Clutch technology at the time was limited. If an 800 horsepower-capable clutch assembly existed, it would likely not be suitable for street driving. Reliability would be

a concern. The decision was made to adapt an automatic transmission and torque converter. Though some scoff at the thought of an automatic in a Cobra, the drivetrain choice contributes greatly to the Super Snake’s astonishingly low 0-60 second acceleration times. Additional gauges were added to the dash to keep tabs on the monster lurking under the hood. To the outside world, it’s the baddest Cobra roadster of all time. To Carroll Shelby it was just his car. Stomping on the throttle at will, Shelby used the Super Snake to blow off steam. He drove the super Snake in a Nevada open road race called the Turismos Visitadores with his buddies. It was during that event that the Super Snake was radarclocked in excess of 190 mph, with the captain of the Nevada Highway Patrol riding in the passenger seat. In 1970, Carroll Shelby sold the Super Snake to Jimmy Webb, a celebrity songwriter, who drove and maintained the car for 25 years. A select few enthusiasts have had the Super Snake in their care since 1995. Of course, it has been a star attraction of the Ron Pratte Collection since 2007. Wherever you look, this baby is special. Ron Pratte has preserved and detailed the car to a very high standard… the one and only Super Snake owned and driven by the legend himself, Carroll Shelby.

he purr of stunning classic cars, the raucous yowl of an evocative F1 car, the excited chatter of thousands of visitors and the constant clicking of cameras… these were the sounds of a hugely successful inaugural London Classic Car Show. Indeed the new show, which closed its doors on Sunday 11th January after a four-day run at ExCeL in London’s Docklands, was such a massive triumph that plans are already well advanced for the 2016 event. “Our first London Classic Car Show has exceeded our wildest dreams,” said Event Director Bas Bungish. “The feedback from visitors and exhibitors has been universally positive. And the great news is not just that we’ll be back for next year, but also that the 2016 London Classic Car Show will be at least 50 per cent bigger with even more fabulous cars and more special displays. What’s more we will be ensuring that we don’t lose the intimacy that made this year’s Show so special.” Packed full of innovative features, highlights included a special display focusing on the career of legendary Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey. There were also displays of iconic cars from Le Mans courtesy of Octane magazine and the Motor Sport Hall of Fame, while James May from BBC Top Gear chose the car that changed the world – he believes it’s the Corgi James Bond Aston Martin of which more than six million were sold. James Martin provided the show with another unique dimension; the TV chef and petrol-head providing show goers with a well deserved pit-stop at his James Martin Classic Café.

But perhaps the show’s defining feature was The Grand Avenue presented by Motoriety. Running the entire length of the hall, The Grand Avenue brought the show to life as dozens of classics from pioneering veterans to sixties supercars – were put through their paces during the show. While the spectacular blasts by F1 cars put smiles on faces it was mouth watering Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder SWB once owned by film star James Coburn and valued at more than £10m that won the most hearts and thus took the People’s Choice Award sponsored by Admiral. “The idea behind The Grand Avenue was to allow visitors to see and hear some iconic classic cars in action… and it proved so popular that we had to arrange extra shows,” said Bungish. The show was launched with a spectacular VIP Preview evening on Thursday 8th January attended by stars of track and screen. May, Martin and Newey were joined by ex-F1 drivers Martin Brundle and David Coulthard, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner and TV presenter Jake Humphrey while BBC Radio 2 broadcaster Chris Evans took over as MC. No fewer than 25,200 visitors attended the show over its three full days… and they came with an urge to spend money. Dealers reported countless genuine enquiries and some serious purchases too. Among the notable cars sold off stands were a £1.5m Ferrari, three £500,000 Aston Martins and a £500,000 E-type Jaguar. But it wasn’t all million pound motors. There were also hun-

dreds of more affordable, but equally desirable, classics up for grabs. Manufacturers including Maserati, Aston Martin and Citroen – the latter celebrating the 60th anniversary of its avant-garde DS – were also overwhelmed by the quality of enquiries. It was the same story throughout ExCeL with the James Martin Classic Café reporting double the expected number of customers and busy trade stands enjoying huge interest. Indeed more than 80 per cent of exhibitors have already rebooked for 2016. And with the 2016 London Classic Car Show promising to be even better make sure you don’t miss out by marking the dates in your diary now: ExCeL, 18-21 February 2016. CGM

Nasser Al-Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel crossed the finishing line in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires as the overall winners after covering more than 9,000 kilometers through Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. “It’s a fantastic feeling” said the winne. “I am really so happy right now to win. To finish in first place, lead from the beginning. We really had a lot of confidence when we came here and Matthieu (Baumel, co-driver) and the team did a great job every day. This Dakar has been 100% perfect for us: the car, the navigation, the team and the tyres have all been perfect. It could not have gone any better. Since last year we’ve been working very hard to prepare for this rally, and I would like to thank all my supporters, especially Red Bull and Ooredoo, for making this possible. This victory means a huge amount to me: from

the start my feeling was that we were completely under control, but of course I could not relax for a second as we have seen in the past that anything can happen.” Al-Attiyah (who already won the 2011 edition with Volskwagen) drove his MINI ALL4 Racing to victory in five of the 13 legs of the rally. The Qatari took the overall lead at the end of stage 2 (which he won) and kept it until the end. He never thought of managing the lead, in fact he collected other four wins sending a message to the slower-but-steady Giniel de Villiers (with co-pilot Dirk von Zitzewitz), the only driver who challenged the no. 301 MINI, finishing behind by 35 minutes but without stage victories. Third overall spot for another MINI, the no.307 of Krzysztof Holowczyc and Xavier Panseri, 1 hour and 32 minutes behind first place.

GANASSI’S S By Niccolo’ Gargiulo

The 2015 Rolex 24 At Daytona lived up to the expectations, making the statement of being by far the most competitive endurance race of the world. The fast track layout, the reliable cars and a bunch of experienced drivers meant that the battle went on for the entire 24 hours. No room for distractions or mistakes, just pure racing day and night. Chip Ganassi Racing was back to winning in Daytona (Ganassi’s sixth overall win, now the most successful team at the Ro-

lex 24) thanks to car no. 02 driven by Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray. The Riley-Ford bested the no. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP of Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi and Sebastien Bourdais that took the checkered flag in second position (just 1.3 seconds behind the winners) after the Corvette DP of Wayne Taylor Racing was forced to a late pit-stop and driver change as Jordan Taylor was exceeding his driving time

SIXTH DAYTONA! limit (Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli were co-driving the no. 10 car). Upon review by IMSA officials Jordan Taylor did exceed the maximum four hours allowed for a driver in each six-hour period and the penalty moved Wayne Taylor Racing team and drivers from third in the Prototype standings to last (16th overall). Third place went to the no. 90 VisitFlorida.com Racing Corvette DP of Richard Westbrook, Michael Valiante and Mike Rockenfeller.

The GTLM class was dominated by the two Chevrolet Corvettes during the entire weekend. Front damage after a restart Sunday morning led the no. 4 car of Oliver Gavin, Simon Pagenaud and Tommy Milner to a long pit-stop, thus losing the chance to battle for the class victory that went to the no. 3 Corvette (Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia, Ryan Briscoe) followed by the BMW Z4 of Bill Auberlen, Dirk Werner, Augusto Farfus and Bruno Spengler.

PIT STOP Bad day(s) for Ferrari. The two GTLM cars (with incredibly experienced driver lineups) were expected to battle at least for a podium spot. Pierre Kaffer, Davide Rigon, Giancarlo Fisichella and Olivier Beretta suffered an electrical misfire and had to retire their no. 62 Ferrari 458 Italia halfway through the race. Francois Perrodo was involved in an incident Saturday evening and wasn’t able to continue (the no. 51 Ferrari was shared with Emmanuel Collard, Gianmaria Bruni and Tony Vilander). The GTD class went to the no. 93 Dodge Viper followed by two Porsches 911 GT.

PIT STOP As usual many Indycar drivers participated in the Rolex 24 at Daytona (14 took the green flag this year), five of them finished on the podium (Dixon and Kanaan won overall, Bourdais finished second while Ryan Briscoe and Simon Pagenaud drove the Corvettes to first and third place in GTLM). But the real surprise came from NASCAR drivers Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray (overall winners with the Ganassi team). Larson said he didn’t want to participate in this year’s race: after a disappointing 2014 Rolex 24 he felt other drivers were much more better than him. In fact he drove the no. 02 prototype at an impressive pace during the night. Jamie McMurray has now become the only driver to win the two NASCAR races at Daytona (the 500 and 400 miles) and the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

PIT STOP What is so unique about the Daytona 24 Hours? Max Angelelli: “I think that the most unique thing about the Daytona 24 is that it is ultracompetitive. You just can’t prognosticate who is going to win. Every year more than ten cars have a chance at being first on Sunday. It is also the race where the strategy is so much more important than in any other endurance race.” Tony Kanaan: “It’s a tradition. This race has been around for such a long time and all the big names in racing have participated, many have won, so it becomes a tradition every year and something you don’t want to miss if you have the opportunity to be here.” Charlie Kimball: “It’s the challenge, what the mechanics and the drivers go through. You know you have a part in such a huge event. As my wife put it: if you didn’t like motorsport, you’d fall in love with it by watching this race. It’s like a symphony, day and night, all the sounds, the lights and colors, the different types of cars, it’s just really special.”

WHAT A CAR! WHAT A CAR! Innovative new LM P1 Nissan for Le Mans and WEC

Nissan relealed a glimpse of its Le Mans challenger – the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO – during the commercial break for Super Bowl XLIX. In a bold move, the Japanese manufacturer has interpreted the sport’s technical regulations in an innovative way, producing a front-engined, front wheel drive car that is powered by a V6 3-litre twin turbo petrol engine and a kinetic energy recovery system.

WHAT A CAR!

“The GT-R is our flagship road car,” said Roel de Vries, Global Head of Marketing and Brand Strategy at Nissan. “This, the ultimate GT-R, continues a sporting bloodline that goes back three decades with NISMO, the motorsport and performance arm of Nissan. Le Mans drives innovation so success on the track will lead to greater innovation in our road car range. We are the new kids at Le Mans; our opponents are the best in the world but we are ready.” The new car will contest the LM P1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship. Starting at Silverstone, UK on 12 April the series travels around the world to Spa in Belgium, onto the Le Mans 24 Hours and Germany’s Nurburgring, before going global with races in the US, Japan, China and the Middle East. The FIA World Endurance Championship is the ultimate proving ground for automotive companies as technological gains on the track can carry through to road cars. Racing car engineers are facing the same challenges as road car engineers as the spotlight falls on energy efficiency. With more technical freedom than Formula 1, the LM P1 engineers have ample opportunity to innovate.

WHAT A CAR!

“This is innovation that excites,” said Shoichi Miyatani, President of NISMO. “Sustainability is at the top of our agenda and the technical regulations for Le Mans give us the freedom to pursue new ideas in this area. Our record at Le Mans is third place overall so we have unfinished business there. We want to win and we have the knowledge to do that – for our customers, our employees and our fans. The competition is exceptionally strong and we are excited by the challenge.” “Our LM P1 programme makes the connection between NISMO on the road and NISMO on the track, showcasing our brand DNA to a global audience,” explained Darren Cox, Global Head of Brand, Marketing & Sales, NISMO. “We are taking motorsport to the masses, telling tales of technical innovation but also human stories via all of the exciting communications channels that are open to us now. We will innovate off the track as well as on it so you can be assured that this is just the beginning of the story.” The intensive test programme for the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO that began in Arizona last year continues this week at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, where the team is making the most of the warmer climate of the Southern US.

RALLY MONTE-CARLO

SĂŠbastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia led a clean sweep of the Rallye Monte-Carlo podium for Volkswagen Motorsport, the French double World Champions winning the event by nearly one minute. Team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila exceeded their own expectations with second overall and Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Floene claimed third in only their second outing in this legendary FIA World Rally Championship event.

Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena- DS 3 WRC

DAY 1

Sébastien Loeb: “The first stage was really very icy. Without the split times, I didn’t know where I was in relation to other drivers, so I was surprised to see the gaps when we got to the finish. When you drive twenty kilometres on ice, you don’t have the impression of going fast, but we must have been quick! We really pushed on SS2 but the roads were very dirty. There was mud, gravel and grass on all of the corners. Anything can happen at MonteCarlo. There is still a very long way to go. In some senses, I’m reassured about the pace that we are capable of setting. I hope the ground is frozen solid and the corners aren’t too dirty tomorrow.” Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director: “We saw today just how exciting and

tense the ‘Monte’ can be. The duel between the two Sebs ended 1:1. Both Sébastien Ogier and Sébastien Loeb made the most of the conditions when they were out on the route. They both benefitted from their starting position on one stage, and were hampered on the other. The gap between the two of them is relatively small, by Rally Monte Carlo standards. I am sure this duel will entertain us over the coming days. However, Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen also produced solid displays in extremely difficult conditions and did not take any unnecessary risks. Given the way we have started, it is going to be an exciting ‘Monte’ for us.“

DAY 2

Jari-Matti Latvala: “My goal at the start of the rally was to finish in the top four – and nothing has changed in that regard. I have not had any particularly good results at the ‘Monte’ in the past, and I still have a lot to learn when it comes to the weather, tyre selection and the route. As such, I am happy with my position and what I learned today. Looking ahead to the championship, it is more important to score a lot of points here than to risk everything trying to win. If you compare the World Championship to the Rally Dakar, we only actually reach the finish at the end of the year. I do not intend to lose sight of our main goal.” Yves Matton, Citroën Racing Team Principal: “Sébastien slid and hit a concrete block on the final stage. The impact broke part of the suspension. He will be able to rejoin tomorrow under Rally 2 rules. It was a gamble of sorts to enter him at Monte-Carlo and I have to say he surprised us again with his performances. Seb

FIRST CLASS ACTION! and Citroën Racing have been daring in terms of this challenge, but also in the race. With a less than ideal road position, he had to make some bold decisions so that he could continue to defend his chances of winning. It was a good fight and it just goes to show that our 2015 DS 3 WRC is a well-designed car. It’s a very positive point for our technical team! He’ll be able to showcase his immense talents tomorrow.

DAY 3

Andreas Mikkelsen: “The choice to fit the supersoft slicks this morning was definitely not the fastest option. However, it was the safest. My personal goal is to finish the rally. Any place in the top five would be a magnificent result for me. I would obviously like to defend third place again tomorrow, but not at any price. We still have three difficult stages to survive on Sunday. Ola and I will be fully focussed on them. Fortunately we can rely on our fantastic ice spies, who provide us with accurate information on the road conditions before we set off. It is also thanks to them that we are so well placed today.”

DAY 4

Sébastien Ogier: “What a fantastic start to the new season! I’m over the moon. Getting a win at the Rally Monte Carlo is special for any driver, but words can’t describe what a win here means to me – this is my home. Friends, family and fans give me so much support and self-confidence here. The atmosphere was magical. I’m grateful that I can give something back with my joy. This 83rd staging of the ‘Monte’ is one of the most difficult rallies I can remember, as far as the conditions are concerned. Selecting the tyres was particularly difficult at the start.

Elfyn Evans/Daniel Barritt – Ford Fiesta WRC

FIRST CLASS ACTION! Then there was the exciting battle with Sébastien Loeb, who was producing spectacular times on Thursday. Remember my quote before the rally? I said that I was sure Loeb will be there and he proved it – but that doesn’t mean it’s normal. It’s not normal. He’s Loeb! When he was back, he was there immediately with an impressive start of his race. Big thanks go to our team and my ice spies. It goes without saying that I am also delighted with the great overall result for Volkswagen; as long as I’m at the top, Jari-Matti and Andreas are my favourite people to share the podium with.” Sébastien Loeb: “We enjoyed that! We managed to find the pace and the DS 3 WRC was perfect. When we set off on the first stage, it was as if Daniel and I had never been away! I was very pleasantly surprised by the feeling and the times we set right from the word go. The first two legs were nonetheless very difficult, but we had to push given we were fourteenth in the running order. The conditions didn’t really work in our favour and a minor mistake proved very costly. But that takes nothing away from the fun we had in the DS 3 WRC. We experienced a lot of good moments. It was a really great experience for Daniel, at home, and for me!” Thierry Neuville: “It feels great to have completed my first Rallye Monte-Carlo. It’s an unbelievable rally, really difficult and it is a real honour to have the opportunity to drive some of these fantastic stages. After the disappointment of last season, we wanted to take things a bit cautiously but I have gained more confidence with each stage and have really enjoyed myself today. It was a really close battle with Dani for the fifth place so I had to push a bit more in today’s

PIT STOP The closing Power Stage at the Rally Monte Carlo formed the 500th special stage for the Volkswagen Polo R WRC in the World Rally Championship since its debut at the 2013 “Monte”. Since then, the World Rally Car from Wolfsburg has established itself as the car with the highest win ratio ever in the World Rally Championship. Not only have 85.2 per cent of all possible victories gone to Wolfsburg, but Volkswagen has also won 347 of its 500 special stages.

stages. To get both cars to the end of the rally is the most important thing and it is a great team result. Hopefully, it is a good foundation for the rest of the season.” Mads Østberg: “I’m very happy to reach the end of this year’s Rallye Monte-Carlo in fourth position. We were consistent and quick. Perhaps we might have hoped to do a little better, but fourth position is a good result. I’m now going to concentrate fully on Rally Sweden, which starts in less than two weeks.”

PIT STOP The reigning FIA Junior WRC champion, Stéphane Lefebvre is competing this year in the FIA WRC2 championship in a Citroen DS 3 R5. Alongside co-driver Stéphane Prévot, he made the perfect start to the season in claiming his maiden win on the roads of Monte-Carlo. Taking advantage of their World Championship experience, Quentin Gilbert and Renaud Jamoul kicked off their 2015 season with a win in the FIA Junior WRC. In their DS 3 R3-MAX, they finished ahead of the German Christian Riedemann and the Norwegian Ole Christian Veiby. At the end of the Rallye Monte-Carlo, Quentin Gilbert also claimed a win in the FIA WRC3 championship and in the Two-Wheel Drive category.

FIRST CLASS ACTION!

PIT STOP Dry asphalt with – by “Monte” standards – plenty of grip, black ice, snow and slush: the teams at the 2015 Rally Monte Carlo were faced with all of the above. And the conditions changed constantly from one kilometre to the next, making tyre selection particularly tricky. Each crew had to select 30 Michelin competition tyres from the 82 at their disposal – eight hard, 16 soft, 24 soft, ten winter tyres and 24 studded tyres.

Over the next two years Toyota Motorsport will continue an intensive test programme with the Yaris WRC car to prepare for a full return in 2017

RAL LY

Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda announced that the Japanese manufacturer will return to the FIA World Rally Championship in 2017 with a car developed and built entirely at its Cologne technical centre. Over the next two years TMG will continue its test programme with the Yaris WRC car to prepare for a full return to the series in which it won four drivers’ and three manufacturers’ World Championships in the 1990s. The Yaris WRC has already completed a preliminary test programme on tarmac and gravel stages throughout Europe, establishing a promising baseline on which to build over the coming months. The car features a 1.6-litre turbo-charged, direct injection engine, which produces over 300hp, while advanced simulation, testing and production techniques have shaped the Yaris chassis.

Several young drivers have already tested the car and Frenchman Eric Camilli, 27, has been selected as the first member of a junior driver development scheme designed with the goal of developing Toyota rally stars of the future. Eric will carry out the development programme alongside last year’s Tour de Corse winner Stéphane Sarrazin, also a racer in Toyota’s FIA World Endurance Championship team, and Sebastian Lindholm. That test programme will include several WRC venues around Europe on a variety of surfaces. Experience gained will assist Toyota as it prepares a car for the 2017 season, when updated technical regulations are expected to be introduced.

The Yaris WRC follows an illustrious line of Toyota cars to carry the brand into WRC and when it makes its competitive debut in 2017, it will mark almost two decades since the company’s final World Championship rally, in 1999. Yoshiaki Kinoshita, Toyota Motorsport President: “It is a great honour to be asked to bring the Toyota name back to the World Rally Championship alongside our continued participation in the World Endurance Championship. To run two works motorsport programmes simultaneously is of course a challenge but we believe we have the expertise and determination to succeed.”

NEW YEAR NEW CARS: the new Formula One season is ready to go!

HAVE A LOOK… The latest generation of Hybrid Formula One cars are really complicated machines and it is very difficult to fully understand how this technology jewels are build and why they are (or aren’t) fast on track. Teams deploy incredibly numerous engineers “troops” and they love to hide the cars during the pre-season tests … so we would just like to have a look at the new cars and wait to see what is going to happen at the Australian Grand Prix in March

MERCEDES F1 W06 HYBRID “It is an evolutionary process.” Said Technical Executive Director Payy Lowe. “And this also includes the regulations themselves. Relative to last winter, these have remained reasonably stable into 2015. But this is certainly not to say that the cars we see take to the track in Jerez will be near-replicas of their predecessors. Some changes will be more visually obvious, of course, but the devil is in the detail. Beneath the covers there have been a raft of developments from both a chassis and Power Unit perspective – all aimed at creating a car that is safer, more efficient, more reliable and ultimately faster. With the Hybrid era still very much in its infancy, there is plenty of scope for xxxx innovation. The challenge at this stage is to find the key areas for performance gain based not just on what we have learned a year further down the line, but also on where there is room for exploring new and innovative sources of competitive advantage.”

FORMULA ONE

MCLAREN HONDA MP4-30 “I firmly believe that our team is stronger than ever.” Underlines Racing Director Eric Boullier. “And that it’s in the best possible position to push the development of the MP4-30 forward. Progress is our purpose, and we’ve seen firm evidence of that from the very beginning of our renewed relationship. We acknowledge that our journey will require a huge amount of hard work, dedication and application from everyone involved, in both Woking and Sakura, but we’re ready and committed to building on the foundations we’ve already established in order eventually to enjoy the results we crave. “McLaren and Honda are completely integrated and united in our purpose, and we share a fantastic sense of optimism: that together, in time, we’ll create another legacy of success.”

LOTUS E23 HYBRID “The E23 Hybrid represents a massive step forward for us”. Said Nick Chester, Lotus F.1 Technical Director. “It’s no secret that we struggled with last year’s car so we’ve targeted every area that caused us an issue. We’ve made strong progress in the wind tunnel as well as in areas such as packaging and cooling. We expect the E23 to perform far, far better than its predecessor. In terms of what’s new, obviously a massive change for us is a new Power Unit supplier (Mercedes). We made this change as it looked and looks to be the one area of the car which could bring us the greatest performance gain. It’s not just performance, but reliability and driveability as well as packaging and cooling too.”

FORMULA ONE Photo Benedict Redgrove - Red Bull Content Pool

RED BULL RB11 Red Bull Technical Chief Adrian Newey said: “The design of the RB11 has been very much about understanding what we learned from last season, which was a big regulation change as far as the power unit is concerned and the packaging that goes with that and setting about optimising the car from those lessons.” Chief Engineering Officer Rob Marshall added: “There are some changes that affect the shape of the front of the car but beyond that most of the changes are under the skin. FERRARI SF15-T Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene: “It seems the SF15-T took on board what was said about it at the launch! Joking apart, this is only the beginning and at this stage, lap times are all relative. We are just getting on with it for now and I’d rather emphasise the work done by the team, who seem to me to be very motivated, which I am very pleased about. I say “well done” to Sebastian, but we have to keep in mind that our rivals, especially Mercedes, must not be underestimated.”

TORO ROSSO STR10 Team Principal Franz Tost: “The 2015 season is a new challenge for all of us. We’ve put a lot of work into the STR10 and we are convinced that we will have a successful year. Our objective is to finish fifth in the constructors championship and we are ready to do our best to achieve it. Our engine partner Renault has also worked very hard to come up with new modifications and I’m sure that our joint effort will give us a package which will certainly be very competitive. All in all, we have a much stronger team as well as a very competitive STR10 and fast drivers; it’s a great combination. Another point that also makes me happy is that we have a very high-skilled young driver pairing which makes this season even more exciting. They both showed fantastic performances throughout their career, winning races and championships, and it’s because of their driving skills that Red Bull has decided to bring them to Scuderia Toro Rosso. I’m really sure that they are very well prepared for this challenge, as is the rest of the team. We are ready for it!”

FORCE INDIA VJM08 Technical Director Andrew Green: “The most significant changes from the outside are at the front of the car in order to conform to the new 2015 technical regulations. With the lowering of the front of the chassis and nose, the front of the car looks very different from what we had developed previously. It is a redesign that involved a lot of work over the winter, as the new regulations caused a loss in terms of downforce and we’ve been working to claw back all that performance. There are also some more subtle changes, like a modified sculpting of the sidepods and new cooling intakes. The differences are not just on the surface. Underneath the skin there is a completely new rear suspension layout with a new hydro-mechanical system replacing the original torsion springs. This will allow us to explore new setup configurations for the rear of the car and will allow set up changes to be made much more quickly in the garage. Put simply it’s another tool for our engineers to use trackside during race weekends.”

FORMULA ONE

WILLIAMS FW37 Williams Technical Chief Pat Symonds said: “We then went about recognising what had worked well and identifying and resolving the areas that we felt needed to be improved. Although the aerodynamics of the car were impressive there is always room for improvement particularly as we handle the new 2015 nose regulations. The first conceptual stage of the FW37 came before the FW36 had turned a wheel. The main element to this is understanding the rule changes and how they will affect the design of the car, from here we can start see if our ideas will fit within the regulations.

SAUBER C34 FERRARI “Later on it will be crucial to see where we stand in comparison to our competition,” explained Chief Designer Eric Gandelin. “The Sauber F1 Team used a roll-out version of the car for the first test at Jerez. Some components were still from the C33 and will be successively replaced by new parts. We will use the time up to Melbourne to ensure we’re as competitive as possible when we line up on the grid for the season opener”.

DREAMS BECOME

REALITY

Alpine presented in January a breath-taking full-scale model of the car at the Festival Automobile International in Paris

The Alpine Vision Gran Turismo, fruit of the collective imagination of the designers and engineers entrusted with developing the 21st Century Alpine, is due to appear soon in the celebrated Gran Turismo速6 game in millions of homes worldwide!

DREAMS BECOME REALITY

The Alpine of the 21st Century is creeping gradually closer. Now, as the brand’s 60th anniversary festivities get under way, the Alpine Vision Gran Turismo heralds a new chapter in the make’s revival. Polyphony Digital Inc. – developers of PlayStation®’s Gran Turismo game – proposed the challenge of creating a new ‘virtual’ car in July 2013 and the teams at Alpine turned their attention to the project with the same passion, enthusiasm and rigour as they are committing to the upcoming new road car. Very soon, the idea of a lightweight, agile, barquette-type car, in keeping with the brand’s racing programme with the A450, took form. An in-house competition involving around 15 designs was won by the project submitted by Victor Sfiazof: “It’s a genuine sportscar which combines the passion for cars with enjoyment behind the wheel. There are numerous references to the past, present and future. The idea of a barquette stemmed from the Alpine A450’s involvement in the Le Mans 24 Hours. That said, the front end takes its inspiration from the A110, while the vertical fins at the rear recall the A210 and A220 while making a real contribution to the car’s styling. As an aeronautic fan, I also wanted to incorporate cues from the world of aviation, too. The airbrakes add a nice hightech touch to the rear end.”

DREAMS BECOME REALITY

PIT STOP The Alpine Vision Gran Turismo will be made available as part of a free update of Gran Turismo®6 for PlayStation®3 in March 2015. To discover the car, players will select ‘Vision GT’ on the ‘My Home’ page. After choosing the body colour, you will be able to admire your acquisition in full-screen mode, along with a detailed description. It will also be possible to view videos and sketches starring the Alpine Vision Gran Turismo before you take part in your first race…

DREAMS BECOME REALITY

PIT STOP Kazunori Yamauchi was an ambitious and visionary young man whose skill and passion as a game producer persuaded Sony to allow him to create his dream, five-years in the making - the ultimate driving simulator. Taking advantage of the technological breakthrough that was the PlayStation console, Polyphony Digital produced an immediate hit with the launch of Gran Turismo on 11th December, 1999. It revolutionised the video game industry with sales of the first title reaching more than 11 million copies.

Little by little, the car appeared in drawing form before a digital version was produced. At the same time, the chassis development engineers worked on the car’s technical characteristics. After benchmarking and comparing dozens of other cars featured in Gran Turismo, they found a set-up that put the accent on driving enjoyment, in keeping with the Alpine spirit. Meanwhile, Polyphony Digital fed the data into their own software and, a little more than a year after the project’s launch, the final specification of the Alpine Vision Gran Turismo was set in concrete. As the final icing on the cake, a new challenge was set: that of producing an actual tangible version of this incredible creation. The fruit of the model-makers’ efforts sparks a different set of sensations still, and the Alpine Vision Gran Turismo’s racy, atypical lines speak to all generations.

DREAMS BECOME REALITY

PIT STOP The appeal of the Alpine Vision Gran Turismo is further enhanced by its open cockpit. The driver sits on the right, a design typical of sport-prototype cars given that the majority of circuits – not least of which Le Mans – run in a clockwise direction.

DREAMS BECOME REALITY

Once the digital version was completed, the attention turned to producing a real-life version of the Alpine Vision Gran Turismo. A double composite shell was produced to give form to the concept car which was no longer merely ‘virtual’ any more. Since the bodywork also reveals the technical elements that lie beneath, significant work also went into incorporating the different assemblies, including the suspension. Similarly, the cockpit’s design called for particular care and upholsterers were called in to produce a bucket seat with visible stitching. The full-scale version of the Alpine Vision Gran Turismo immediately impresses through its unusual proportions, while visibility from behind the wheel is perfect with nothing in the line of sight. The Alpine Vision Gran Turismo has been presented for the first time at this year’s Festival Automobile International in Paris in January.

PIT STOP The car’s profile awakens other memories. Large air intakes direct the flow that escapes behind the front wheels and accentuate the narrow form of the body. Complementing the overall harmony, the long lateral rear fins call to mind the A210s and A220s which shone so brilliantly at Le Mans, achieving victory in the 24-hour race’s Efficiency Index class in 1966.

INDYCAR introduces chassis competition in the Verizon IndyC The director of aerodynamic development Tino Belli provides in

The January 18 aerodynamic bodywork kit homologation deadline was one step in a multi-year journey for manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda. Production of multiple components, pending INDYCAR approval, and then supplying Verizon IndyCar Series teams with the pieces is next on the list

Beginning with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 29, INDYCAR will introduce chassis competition in the Verizon IndyCar Series based upon aerodynamic bodywork designed, manufactured and supplied by Chevrolet and Honda. Cars will be differentiated by their shape as the manufacturers have designed aero kits for speedways and road and street course/short ovals for the Dallara IR-12 chassis. Manufacturer track testing of prototype components opened Oct. 6 and continued through Jan. 18, which was the same date as homologation. Production will ramp up to meet the March 1 deadline for one road and street course/short oval kit to be delivered to each entrant. The speedway aero kit, according to the INDYCAR timeline, will be delivered by April 1. The initial team on-track test is scheduled for March 16-17 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala. The 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on May 24 will mark the debut of the speedway aero kit. In the Q&A below, INDYCAR director of aerodynamic development Tino Belli provides insight into the regulations of the aero kit legality boxes and options available to teams for the 2015 season:

Q. You’re one of the few who has seen both manufacturers’ aero kits on the track. Will fans notice differences from last season? “Differences between the 2014 Dallara chassis and the 2015 aero kits and between the Chevy and Honda aero kits will be quite easily spotted by an interested fan. Especially to someone who is interested in technology, they’ll see many differences between the cars. At speed and with different color schemes, it might be more difficult to see the differences. It’s certainly not going to be a spec car, and it’s not spec even within the Chevrolet or Honda environments. The Chevy might not always run in exactly the same configuration between a Penske and Ganassi car, and the same with Honda between, say, an Andretti and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports car because teams will have options”.

Q. To review, what were the legality boxes -- areas open for development by manufacturers -- for 2015? “The engine cover, sidepods and rear wheel guards are common between the speedway and road/street course/short oval packages. On the speedways, the manufacturers can do a new front wing main plane, rear wing end plates, front wing end plates. Teams are allowed to use optional components that fit to the sidepods, engine cover and rear wheel guards such as winglets and flicks. The teams will have quite a lot of things they can play with if they decide that they can come up with a better solution for their particular requirements and their driver or car set-up. The car set-up is not only going to be a downforce level like a wing angle, springs, shocks, toe and camber.

NOT GOING TO BE A SPEC CAR

PIT STOP Examples of areas open for development include sidepods, engine cover, rear wheel guards, front and rear wing endplates, and the speedway front wing main plane. According to the regulations, Chevrolet and Honda are to offer two aero kits to each of their entrants at no more than $75,000 per complete kit (excluding fasteners for all circuits). Though components are homologated, manufacturer updates are allowed within regulations. Additionally, teams will have multiple component options to add or remove to suit the car’s set-up and driver based on the diverse set of tracks on the schedule.

If a particular type of mechanical set-up needs an aerodynamic solution, they can try what they like. We believe there will be a reasonable number of components that the manufacturers will homologate as optional that a team could investigate to see what could give it a better solution on a particular racetrack. An example is the Indy road course, which because of the length of the straights is a low-drag racetrack. You can imagine teams coming up with a hybrid speedway/road course solution. They can’t put on a speedway front wing on a road course, but they could perhaps use speedway sidepod options. Another thing we’re allowing is all of these optional components can now be changed between qualifying and the race. A team could decide to go for a super low drag qualifying set-up and use the newness of the tires to try to get the speed and then revert to a more high-downforce race set-up, which could mean a change in some of the components on the sidepods, wheel guards and engine cover. For a long time, we had what you qualified with is what you raced. The same will be true for the Indy 500 with the optional components.

NOT GOING TO BE A SPEC CAR

In qualifying for Indy you might put on all your lowest drag optional components or choose to emit components, and then for the race you might decide there is some sidepod winglet that might give you better handling characteristics or is more efficient. On the road course in addition to the sidepods, engine cover and rear wheel guards is the front wing flaps and end plates, and the rear wing end plates. The rear wing is a standard Dallara main plane for all events except for the Indy 500, during which teams can choose between the Dallara or their manufacturer’s main plane. The engine air intake will be different from the Dallara chassis, too”.

Q. What happens with homologation? “On Jan. 18, everything was frozen. So we require the CAD files, the weights of the components, the layer books. We don’t have to have a component in our hands by Jan. 18, but we have to have all of the designs in our hands and they will be locked down at that point. The only thing the manufacturers can do afterward is if they have some sort of reliability issue or if they could prove they could save significant money by altering a construction technique to save money they can ask for a concession. The component won’t be allowed to be any lighter and we want it to have similar stiffness”.

Q. How often can any of the legality boxes be upgraded? “From a performance point of view, except for the sidepod and engine cover that have to remain fixed for two years, all of the other components are up for being upgraded. But they only are allowed to upgrade three legality boxes total in a two-year period. Currently, they can choose to homologate a new component in one of the three boxes any time from the beginning of the 2015 season to the end of the 2016 season. If one manufacturer feels it is behind in a particular configuration, it can bring forward a box to try to catch up earlier. If you’re feeling confident or comfortable, you’ll want to delay upgrades until after you see how 2015 pans out with all the different racetrack configurations we go to. The components that get changed, the old components are grandfathered so teams can still choose to continue to use those components or use them as spares”.

Q. How will the process of policing the aero kits work? “Our task is to make sure that the component as homologated doesn’t get altered by either the manufacturer or team. We want the bodywork run as the aero kit manufacturer designed it and manufactured it. We’ll be checking the weight of components along with the shape and stiffness of the components. Like the current technical inspection, there will be a combination of jigs and fixtures, load tests, maximum and minimum height dimensions and then we’ll continue with the laser scanning that we tested last season so we can compare our record of the CAD of components against the car any time”. PADDOCK MIX TOYOTA CONFIRMS GT86 CS-R3 SPECIFICATIONS

The GT86 CS-R3 moved closer to its full-blooded rally competition debut later this year with Toyota Motorsport confirming final specification details. The CS-R3 was launched in prototype form last August, since when it has undergone an extensive test programme to fine-tune design and specification of the kit that will be delivered to private competitors and teams. The development work has improved performance on both gravel and tarmac, together with reliability and durability in order to deliver a car that can be used for lowcost competition for a full season and beyond.

The CS-R3 has proved immensely popular with its rear-wheel drive powertrain, featuring a 1,998cc, 235bhp boxer engine and six-speed sequential transmission. The first cars will be delivered to customers in May, slightly later than originally forecast to allow time for improvements identified during testing to be fully implemented. As a result, Toyota Motorsport has extended its introductory discount, offering the CS-R3 kit, in tarmac or gravel specification, at €79,000 (excluding VAT) for orders placed before 24 April 2015. This represents a €5,000 discount on the standard retail price (excluding VAT). The kit includes a GT86 body shell, powertrain and all the mechanical components required to build the car. The car will be homologated to FIA R3 regulations at the beginning of July, after which all CS-R3 cars will be eligible for national and international rally competitions, up to and including the World Rally Championship. The GT86 CS-R3 is expected to make its competition debut at the Rally Niedersachsen in Germany on 4 July, with up to 10 cars due to take part. This will be the first round of the new HJS Toyota Motorsport CS-R3 Trophy. The series will be contested over seven rounds, with more than €5,000 in prize money available at each event. The trophy will run for at least the next three seasons.

PADDOCK MIX DEVELOPMENT COMPLETED WITH SUCCESS Last June, Renault Sport Technologies unveiled the bodywork line of its future race car. On August 27 in Moscow, the public discovered the Renault Sport R.S. 01, a vehicle with a spectacular style and exceptional performance. At the same time, the Renault Sport Technologies men and their partners were conducting the first phase of a sustained development program: the shakedown of the Renault Sport R.S. 01 at the Autodromo di Franciacorta. Beginning at the Circuito de la Comunidad Valenciana Ricardo Tormo and concluding at the Autodromo di Vallelunga, the development led the star of the Renault Sport Trophy to the Circuito de Barcelona-Catalunya, l’Auto-

dromo di Monza, the Circuito de Jerez, Motorland Aragón and the Circuito de Navarra. During 17 days of testing, the Renault Sport R.S. 01 put in a total of 7475 kilometers in all conditions. Drivers with varied and complimentary backgrounds took their turns at the wheel of the Renault Sport creation. Among them were Alexandre Prémat, Andy Soucek, Albert Costa, Mirko Bortolotti, Dimitri Enjalbert, Anthony Beltoise, Nick Castburg, Renaud Kuppens, and Laurent Hurgon as well drivers from the world of endurance and Formula 1. The results of this hard work rapidly paid off because all the development objectives were met even surpassed.

Far from resting on their laurels, the Ulis teams are studying ways to reduce front brake wear with the goal of ensuring the competitors need just one set of discs per season. The tests have seen the R.S. 01 post a few reference times between the DTM and the best GT3s performances, the goal set by Renault Sport from the inception of the project. All compared it to an open-wheel car ; the drivers praised its stability, its reactive steering and its high level of downforce, which quickly built confidence. In addition to these strengths add a very powerful and easy braking with ABS, the adjustability of the steering wheel, an engine that furnishes a lot of torque as well as very minimal degradation to the tires proposed by Michelin. Immediately following the final test session at Vallelunga at the end of December, the assembling of the customer cars began. The first deliveries to the teams will take place in March before the first race at Spa-Francorchamps in the World Series by Renault.

PADDOCK MIX 2015 SUBARU MOTORSPORT ACTIVITIES

Subaru Tecnica International unveiled the new racing car developed from the WRX STI for 24 Hours Nürburgring endurance race in 2015 and announced an outline of Subaru Motorsport activities for 2015 at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2015 STI will participate in the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race (from 14 to 17 May in Germany) for eight consecutive years, with a vehicle whose performance has been enhanced from its base car – the Subaru WRX STI. The race car’s performance such as aerodynamics, stability, body rigidity and engine output have been enhanced compared to the previous

model. In addition, visibility for racing flags has also been improved by introducing a left-hand drive car. Like last year, Hideharu Tatsumi will take the helm of team operations as team manager, in addition to the development of the car. The drivers are Sasaki (Japan), Lasée (Germany), van Dam (Netherlands) and Tim Schrick (Germany), the winner of 2014 VLN endurance racing championship who newly joins the team. Subaru, with the “SUBARU BRZ GT300” race car, will participate in the SUPER GT series this year as well, widely regarded as Japan’s top motorsports category. The race car employs the same front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout as the production BRZ model. The team manager will be Hideharu Tatsumi, the team will be operated in conjunction with “R&D SPORT” led by Director Shinji Motojima, and Takuto Iguchi and newly joined Hideki Yamauchi will be driving for the team. In addition, Dunlop tires which have been used in the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race will be employed for the “SUBARU BRZ GT300” race car.
