Liam Doran: “Unfortunately, while battling with Timur Timerzyanov in the 6 lap semi final, a combination of contact and an impact with the edge of the kerbs resulted in a puncture and a broken wheel. It’s been a real weekend of highs and lows,” said Liam “I wanted to win, and for sure we had the speed to do it this weekend. It makes it all the harder to try and accept, knowing you could be up the front fighting for the podium. I really enjoy coming here to Norway - the track is aggressive and technical - and I get a lot of support from the fans.

I must admit that in the heats I was being a bit cautious and playing it safe. I don’t really like doing that, but I wanted to make sure I got the finishes and the points in the bag. But the car was so dialled in, that after two fastest heat times and qualifying first overall for the semi finals, I figured we were in with a good shout. There isn’t a whole load you can do about racing on three wheels here - and I couldn’t hold the cars behind me for long”

Mazzanti Automobili recently unveiled at Torino – Parco Valentino a new hypercar, maybe the most powerful street-legal hypercar ever made in Italy!Â

MILLECAVALLI!!!

M I L L E C AVA L L I

Luca

Mazzanti, founder and owner of the company that bears his name since fifteen years ago, presented this extreme version of Evantra, which is the current and third model of the artisanal Supercar and Hypercar manufacturer from Tuscany. Evantra Millecavalli is equipped with a new

7.2 L V8 bi-turbo engine, capable of 1000 hp and of a torque higher than 1200 Nm directly to the rear wheels; this layout, combined with a specifically developed six-speed sequential gearbox, allows the Hypercar to destroy the 0-60 mph in only 2.7 seconds, reaching the speed of 250 mph, also thanks to the kerb weight of just 1300 kg. The brand new carbon-ceramic brakes, spe-

cifically developed for Mazzanti Automobili, exploiting Motorsport technology, permit to stop from 300 kph to 0 in only 7 seconds. Luca Mazzanti affirmed “Our new Hypercar, Evantra Millecavalli, is an arrival point for us. Not an absolute arrival, but the result of the meticulous work and the refining process that have been started since the delivery of the

Evantra project. Our Atelier had to work really hard to develop such an important project, after only two years since the debut of the Supercar Evantra. Nevertheless, the passion, the enthusiasm and the excellent competences of my team and mine, permitted us to complete this goal partly paid-off by the first three “Millecavalli-clients” which commissioned their Hypercars already during the pure plan-

ning phase. The excellent performance of the MILLECAVALLI version marks an Italian record that makes us extremely proud. My tailor-made automobiles reflects my idea of Supercars entirely; in fact, I have been dreaming of my own car, different from all others, since I was a child. Every exemplar is thought to fully re-

flect the personality of the owner, still keeping the unmistakable Mazzanti style. My way of interpreting the automobile, has always been by considering it a protagonist, leaving plenty of room for the direct sensations of the driver that has to live an intense and thrilling experience in first person.

After building an immense experience as a coachbuilder and restorer of very prestigious vintage cars, Luca Mazzanti in the early years of the new millennium realized his dream of becoming a manufacturer of special cars, made with craftsmanship and tailor made care. On September 30, 2005 the Antas was presented in Rome, first realization of the atelier of Pontedera, an elegant coupe with ‘retro’ design. The mission of Mazzanti Automobili is to return to consider the car as a sensual object, which first of all touches people’s emotions, in an age where market strategies command over inspiration and creativity. All of Mazzanti Automobili’s Supercars are characterized by a strong personality and are “tailor made” according to customer requests.

The New PEUGEOT 3008 GT SUV

GT SPIRIT

Photos Š Automobiles Peugeot

A few weeks after its presentation, the new PEUGEOT 3008 has unveiled its most dynamic and exclusive version. A truly modern expression of driving pleasure, aimed at aesthetes who are looking for a new driving experience, the GT version crowns the brand’s new SUV range

GT SPIRIT

Equipped

with the 2.0L BlueHDi 180 S&S EAT6, the new PEUGEOT 3008 GT has the benefit of a series of specific attributes as well as the optional unique and distinctive “Coupe Franche” paint design. In addition, the GT Line trim-level offers, on more affordable engine versions, a synthesis of sporty and top-of-the-range looks. The new PEUGEOT 3008 GT and GT Line are a key part of the brand’s move up-range and will be available from the start of the commercial launch from October 2016. From its launch, the new PEUGEOT 3008 has thus had a simple and transparent range for all its customers. Consistent with the brand’s strategy of moving up the range, it is based on: • three mainstream trim-levels (Access, Active, Allure) • a GT Line trim-level • a GT version

GT SPIRIT

The GT model is positioned as the 3008 SUV’s top-of-the-range, exclusive and resolutely dynamic proposition, while at the same time being perfectly usable on a day-to-day basis. Aimed at driving enthusiasts craving sophistication, the new PEUGEOT 3008 GT offers to combine all the qualities of the range’s new SUV with some sporty and exclusive touches. GT! For PEUGEOT, this name, emblema-

tic in the history of cars, has a very specific meaning which helps the brand stand out from the crowd and enhance the status of the driver. The GT version of the new PEUGEOT 3008 has: • a highly-efficient and exclusive engine: the 2.0L BlueHDi 180 S&S, combined with the EAT6 automatic six-speed gearbox. It is the most powerful version of the range, providing even more intense driving pleasure

• a more sporty appearance, with fender flares and its 19” tyres as standard (235 50 R19) combined with two-tone diamond-cut BOSTON wheel rims. Only available in the GT version, this dynamic tyre is combined with running gear specifically developed to get the most out of it • finely crafted, technologically advanced lights, with Full LED headlights and sequential indicators as standard • an exclusive bodywork colour. With

a standard-equipped two-tone roof in “Black Diamond” gloss paintwork, the GT version offers as an option the ambitious “Coupe Franche” dual-color paint design using three of the range’s colours (Platinum Grey, Amazonite Grey and Metallic Copper). Still sporting a Perla Nera black rear, the GT “Coupe Franche” gives the range’s new standard exclusive connotations and identifies it with PEUGEOT’s know-how.

GT SPIRIT

INSIDE: THE NEW ENHANCED PEUGEOT I-COCKPIT The techno-chic sporty touch of the GT version can of course be enjoyed in the passenger compartment. The new PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® - is a standard feature on all 3008 SUVs with its extremely technologically advanced dashboard. From the first level of finish, the on-board experience is enhanced by the rich interior and the modern, almost futuristic appearance of the driver’s compartment. The choice of materials and the precision of the adjustments make a significant contribution to the high-level of perceived quality in the passenger’s compartment. The meticulous attention to detail on the part of the designers of the GT version has naturally produced something extremely refined and elegant. The interior of the GT version has fine copper double topstitching on the dashboard trim, door trim panels and central armrests. This copper topstitching is on the contoured seats covered

with a tri-material TEP/ Alcantara trim, or as an option, with Nappa Mistral leather. Once comfortably seated, the driver feels immediately attracted to the beauty of the compact steering wheel - which proudly sports the GT logo in chromed steel on the lower flat part - the rim of which is covered with full-grain leather, also with copper topstitching. And the sensory journey continues. The magnificent genuine aged-oak trim on the dashboard and door panels are a joy to behold and touch. This “Grey Oak” trim fits both with the 3008 GT’s high-end status, and is an environment inspired by modern, home design. Finally, the exclusive touch in the GT’s interior environment is based on a host of small details demonstrating the brand’s know-how in the area of well-being and prestige: touches of satin steel chrome in the driver’s compartment, stainless steel pedal unit, footrest and front door sills, floor mats with copper stitching, black roof trim and window uprights etc.

GT SPIRIT

The exclusive feel extends to the digital display which has a specific copper colour. The PEUGEOT i-CockpitÂŽ is standard equipment in all models of the new 3008 SUV and it really amplifies the driving experience. On the GT model, dynamic settings (with the Driver Sport pack), intensity of lighting, screen displays, configuration of the acoustic environment, release of delicate fragrances, and the possibility to have access to a multi-point massage setting on front seats, nothing is missing!

SPORTY AND ASSERTIVE EXTERIOR DESIGN The exterior design of the new PEUGEOT 3008 SUV is very powerful. It has adopted all the characteristics of the SUVs, is surprisingly expressive and has an extremely consistent look. For the GT version, the designers used these qualities and maintained them in the right proportions. Not over-doing it, maintaining the harmony, whilst keeping the specific features which give the model its exclusive feel.

The front side thus sports an exclusive sporty grille. It is broad, and surrounded by a strip which is no longer chrome, but bi-aspect “Sanded Chrome”, and it proudly frames the brand’s lion logo in the centre of a chequered chrome radiator grille. The overall effect is rounded off by the exclusive bumper design combined with the full LED headlights. The steely, sporty look of this front end express the assertive personality of its owner and the pride associated with the brand.

GT SPIRIT

The profile is highlighted by the line of the stainless steel rear quarter light and window trim finisher. Along with the stainless steel trim which runs along the roof to the rear spoiler, they frame the glazed surfaces with streamlined elegance. Thus highlighted, the beltline’s proportions give it a lower and more dynamic look than the majority of its competitors. With its widened wheel arches, 19” alloy wheels, slender streamlined aluminium roofbars and copper GT monogram on the front wing, it has an impressive profile! Especially if it has the emblematic “Coupe Franche” dual colour paint design. LED welcome lighting (located in the door mirror shells) proudly projects the brand’s lion logo on the floor, a sign of the designers’ care and attention to detail. At the rear, in addition to the GT badging on the tailgate, double chrome exhaust pipes are located either side of the bumper. These stylistic elements are perfectly integrated, giving an air of chic and elegant sportiness.

GT SPIRIT

Since the beginning of 2015, PEUGEOT’s strategy to move upmarket has been based on a very consistent offer combining a resolutely dynamic style and feel with engines which are more accessible than the most powerful versions. This is what led to the creation of the GT Line trim level, which offers customers a remarkable finish with strong personality and core range engines. After the 108, 208, 2008, 308 and 508, it is the turn of the new PEUGEOT 3008 to benefit from this attractive sporty-look trim level on its entire range of engines - with the exception of the 1.6L BlueHDi 100 S&S and of course the 2.0L BlueHDi 180 S&S, reserved exclusively for the GT Derived from the highlyspecified (level 3) Allure model, the “GT Line” has many visual attributes on the GT version. On the exterior, in addition to the GT Line logo on the front wings and rear tailgate: • the specific front bumper with full LED lights and the GT radiator grille; • stainless steel quarter light finishers and weatherstrips; • the chrome double exhaust pipe; • the “Black Diamond” roof as standard; • the option of the “Coupe Franche” paint design in three colours with black The GT Line trim-level also be specified with 18” two-tone diamond cut alloy wheels and Perla Nera black door mirror shells (they are chrome on the GT models)

THE R A CI N G S I DE 24 Hours of Le Mans 2016

RACING

DOWN TO THE LAST MINUTE

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is considered one of the toughest motor sport races in the world, and this year’s event perfectly demonstrated that when it comes to endurance racing, every second counts. After a dramatic turn of events on the final lap, Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb claimed Porsche’s second consecutive victory after 24 gruelling hours of hard fought racing

RACING DOWN TO THE LAST MINUTE

The

extreme weather conditions meant the historic race started behind the safety car. After 53 minutes the real racing began in front of 263,500 spectators, and as conditions dried, the LMP1 class battle between the Audi, Porsche and Toyota teams began with Toyota taking an early advantage. Racing distances of over 5,000 kilometres on a combination of public roads and race track, the cars’ and drivers’ speed and reliability were tested to the absolute limits. As night fell at the Circuit de la Sarthe, both the #1 Porsche 919 Hybrid and #7 Audi R18 teams had to make lengthy pit stops for repairs, taking them out of contention for the LMP1 class win. Meanwhile, the #82 Ferrari 488 GTE driven by Gian Carlo Fisichella led the Ford GTs in the GTE PRO class, as the 2015 winning Corvettes struggled for pace. As dawn broke, the drivers battled under intense pressure to perform at the highest level. The two Toyotas remained dominant for much of the morning until the #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid, driven by Neel Jani, split them as the race entered the final quarter. With four and a half hours to go the #68 Ford GT car, with Joey Hand behind the wheel, finally passed the #82 Ferrari 488 GTE and held the lead

until the chequered flag, reigniting memories of one of the greatest contests in the history of Le Mans between Ferrari and Ford, when Ford completed a spectacular 1-2-3 podium finish 50 years ago. TO EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED As the Rolex clock counted down the final minutes, the #5 Toyota TS050 Hybrid driven by Kazuki Nakajima looked almost certain for victory, but it was not meant to be. On the penultimate lap, Nakajima’s Toyota slowed unexpectedly, stunning both the 263,500 strong crowd around the track and the race’s global TV audience. As it approached the start finish line to complete its final lap, the Toyota TS050 Hybrid stopped briefly, allowing Neel Jani in the #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid to pass and take the victory. This sudden turn of events yet again proves that the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the ultimate endurance event and demands a flawless performance from start to finish. The LMP2 class was won by the #36 Alpine A460-Nissan driven by Nicolas Lapierre, Stéphane Richelmi and Gustavo Menezes. The PRO AM class was won by Californian Scuderia Corsa team and the #62 Ferrari 458 Italia GTE driven by Townsend Bell, Jeffrey Segal and William Sweedler.

RACING DOWN TO THE LAST MINUTE

Andreas Seidl, Porsche Team Principal: “First of all we certainly feel for our colleagues and friends from Cologne. To give away such a great race this way on the last lap is something you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. But this is the sport with all its highs and lows and that’s also why we love it for. It was a strong fought victory. We had to put Toyota under pressure and went flat out for the entire race. Also our drivers were on the edge. The frequency with which the leader changed was extreme. Since we have started development and preparation for the 919 Hybrid we have delivered a strong performance. This goes for our colleagues at home in Weissach as well as for the race team. As happy as I am for the number 2 crew, I feel sorry for the guys from the number 1 car. Without the failure and the long repair they would have been able to fight for the win as well. To win Le Mans is the highlight of the season and it is difficult to believe we have managed it twice now in what is only our third year. Now we look forward. We take a lot of points from here and now we want to defend both world championship titles as well.“

RACING DOWN TO THE LAST MINUTE

Romain Dumas: “For sure we feel sorry for Toyota. It was a great race. But of course if you get the chance to win Le Mans, you won’t say no thank you. It’s impossible to realize right now what just happened. This year, the lap times were a bit slower due to the regulation changes.” Neel Jani: “I feel heartbroken for the Toyota drivers. I think every racing driver knows how this feels like. I still have no words to describe winning the 24 hours of Le Mans. This is really surreal. Still we drove a very good race with very few mistakes and pushed the car to the maximum. This win is really, really special.” Marc Lieb: “It was not at all an easy race with regards to traffic and slow zones. The last quadruple stint I did was really on the edge. Even the first three stints were quite difficult with overtaking in the traffic and taking risks. In the last one I then also had to save fuel, and especially the front tyres that began to lose performance. I gave everything I had – and now I think I have to digest what all has happened today.”

RACING DOWN TO THE LAST MINUTE

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing finished second in the 84th edition of Le Mans 24 Hours but had the victory taken from its grasp in a cruel late twist. Both TS050 HYBRIDs took turns to lead the race as part of an exciting battle with the #2 Porsche and was poised to win with the #5 crew of Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima before incredible late drama. Starting what would have been the penultimate lap, with Kazuki at the wheel, the #5 suffered a sudden loss of power. Despite strenuous efforts to restore drive, the car struggled round the lap and stopped on the start-finish line. It was eventually restarted and completed the final lap too slowly to be classified. The #6 of Stéphane Sarrazin, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi, a long-time leader of the race which suffered its own troubles late in the race, finished second, behind the winning #1 Porsche.

Toshio Sato, Team President: “I am incredibly proud of our team effort, not just today but since Le Mans last year. Thank you to the team in Higashi-Fuji and Cologne, as well as our partners Oreca. The way we have responded to the pain of our 2015 disappointment, by developing an all-new chassis and powertrain in a short timeframe, has been impressive and the performance of the TS050 HYBRID was strong. We worked as one team and took part in an amazing Le Mans 24 Hours. Congratulations to Porsche on its victory. I have no words to describe our emotions today. It is simply heartbreaking but we will return stronger and more determined to win.” Kazuki Nakajima: “First of all thank you to all the team members; we did everything right. The car was great to drive. It was tough to have Porsche #2 only 30 seconds behind me towards the end but we had the pace and we managed it very well. It was only two laps missing and it’s a pity we didn’t get the trophy; the team deserved to win. When I was doing my last lap to the chequered flag, all the marshals and fans were really kind to me and that was very emotional. I want to say thank you for that. Let’s come back stronger and grab that trophy.”

The Nr. 68 Ford GT of Sébastien Bourdais (FRA), Joey Hand (US) and Dirk Müller (GER) crossed the finish line at Le Mans at three o’clock on Sunday, as the overall GT winner of the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours. The No. 69 Ford GT of Ryan Briscoe (AUS), Scott Dixon (NZ) and Richard Westbrook (GB) joined the winners on the podium after scoring third place. The Nos. 66 and 67 Ford GTs finished in fourth and ninth places, respectively. “This is an historic moment for the Ford Motor Company,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company. “We dared to dream that we could return to Le Mans, 50 years after the incredible 1966 win, and take on the toughest competition in the world. The pride we all felt when the Ford GT crossed the line at Le Mans is indescribable. The team that designed, built and raced the Ford GT has worked tirelessly to bring us to this result and I am proud of each and every one of them. The Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team demonstrated the spirit of Ford, that of innovation, determination and true teamwork. We cherish our history and heritage, but today we made history again and I couldn’t be more proud.”

The 84th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans finished with a win, two podiums finishes and a big disappointment for Ferrari in the two GT classes. The victory, for the second consecutive year, came in the GTE-Am class and was delivered by the 458 Italia of US team Scuderia Corsa driven by Jeff Segal, Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell. Second place in the same class went to the 458 Italia of AF Corse with Franรงois Perrodo, Rui Aguas and Emmanuel Collard who galloped ahead in the championship standings. The other podium came in the GTE-Pro class where the 488 GTE of Risi Competizione, in the capable hands of Giancarlo Fisichella, Toni Vilander and Matteo Malucelli, battled for victory to the last with the Ford GT.

Nicolas Lapierre, Gustavo Menezes and Stéphane Richelmi produced a perfect performance in the Signatech-Alpine no. 36 to win the LMP2 category. Philippe Sinault, Signatech-Alpine Team Principal: “For a lot of people, this win was more or less wrapped up even before the start and I think that put us under a bit of pressure. We had to remain grounded and treat this great twenty-four hour race with the respect it deserves. At the same time, we couldn’t just play a waiting game, because experience shows that you can’t win the LMP2 class with that kind of approach. Once again this year, the night separated the men from the boys. On our side, we tackled the difficulties of racing overnight by maximising the track time of Nicolas [Lapierre] when the conditions were at their trickiest. Our settings were also more adapted to the cooler temperatures you typically get at night. On their side, Gustavo [Menezes] and Stéphane [Richelmi] drove perfectly, without making even the slightest error. It was an incredible performance on their debut here! I’m proud to have won this race with the hardcore of a team that I helped form some twenty years ago. It’s a fantastic win that we are going to savour and celebrate. It would have been a perfect weekend had the no. 35 car made it to the end. Nelson [Panciatici] was entirely blameless for the off. He was caught out by a mechanical issue, the cause of which we have yet to establish.”

RACING DOWN TO THE LAST MINUTE

In a dramatic race that was only decided on the last lap, Lucas di Grassi (BR), Loïc Duval (F) and Oliver Jarvis (GB) clinched third place for Audi at the last moment. Marcel Fässler (CH), André Lotterer (D) and Benoît Tréluyer (F) finished in position four. With that, Audi, in its 18th participation since the brand’s Le Mans debut in 1999, achieved its 18th podium in succession including 13 overall victories. “Unfortunately, neither of our two cars made it over the distance without issues,”

said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “This weekend once more showed why Le Mans is regarded as the world’s toughest endurance race. I’m proud of our squad having managed to bring both cars home. But, obviously, this is not the result we were hoping for. Congratulations to Porsche on their second victory in succession. Following a tremendous race, Toyota, on making their 18th attempt, again just barely missed finally winning Le Mans – that speaks volumes about how incredibly difficult this race is.”

The #97 GTE Pro entry, driven by Richie Stanaway (NZ), Fernando Rees (BR) and Jonny Adam (GB), executed the strategy to perfection to finish sixth. The result brings vital points in the crucial title fight and provides Aston Martin Racing a nine point lead in the FIA WEC Endurance Cup for GT Manufacturers. “We’re delighted with the result this weekend and to be able to walk away leading the GT Manufacturer’s Championship has met our objectives for the weekend,” commented Paul Howarth, Team Principal, Aston Martin Racing, “Le Mans has offered us all of the challenges we expected. We knew when we came here that we’d be facing some very strong opposition and we knew what we had to do to resolve this. We continue from here to fight for wins and the outright title. It’s a real shame for our #98 Am entry, but I’m confident the guys will bounce back.”

T H E “ I N S I D E ” N A R R AT I O N OF A SERIOUS HOT RODDER’S WEEK END

The

action all starts on Friday (3 of June) morning. Fencing is delivered to the museum grounds, and the trickle begins. Cars from across the UK and Europe making the mammoth journey to the tiny village in the corner of South Wales, all with drivers with hopes of new records and increased speeds. The trickle quickly becomes a torrent as parking spaces become fewer and farther between, with familiar faces and cars, as well as new people who will be racing on the hallowed sands for the first time ever. Everyone is excited, this is the place to be if you consider yourself a serious hot rodder. No egos, no bravado, just cars and drivers doing what comes natural in such an epic setting. By Friday night, most have arrived, so booking in closes at 10pm, time for a quick bite, maybe a pint or two, then bed, with dreams of what will unfold the following day. The tides were earlier this year than in previous, so the racers’ briefing was held bright and early in the Museum of Speed. Owners and co-pilots of 151 of the finest cars on this planet were there, awaiting the annual instructions from Neil Fretwell before heading to the sands. Meanwhile, the beach was a hive of activity, fences going up, a half mile course being marked out, and most importantly, head timekeeper Phil Wells setting the new timing gear at the 110 yard trap. Saturday set-up is always a little slower than Sunday, but by around 12pm we were ready to go. Starter

Marco Warren and flag girl Scarlett Devey were ready, Phil Wells was ready at timing control, all the Sidewinders dotted around the course were ready, it was now over to reigning King of the Beach, Matt Farrant, to lay the first set of tracks on the beach. A storming run ensued, setting the tone for what was to follow. The cars ran all day, completely without incident, and the 100mph club saw a number of new members knocking at its door, with records being broken all over the place; the vintage four banger classes being the most trouble. Torsten Krahl topping 87mph in his roadster, whilst Graham Paddick and his McDowell ran at more than 96mph, bringing the 100mph club tantalisingly near. Matt Farrant upped his game too, finding another 1mph to up his course record to 117 and some change. Al Barnett opened up a new class, running 91.57 to set the standard in L6/R. Racing was pushed for as long as it could, but around 4 o’clock a fast tide made the decision that racing would end for the day. Some racers had two runs under their belt; others would have to wait until the next day, when they would be afforded the opportunity to go again. Sundays tide was around 45 minutes later than Saturday, but with a day’s practice on the set up, things were ready to start happening again on the beach before midday rolled around.

N O T J U S T A N O T H E R D AY AT T H E B E A C H …

First car out to be timed was Robin Weathersbee in his stunning Plymouth convertible. Although running strong, he couldn’t stretch to worrying Dean Crane’s record, hovering around 77mph all weekend. But records did fall once again. Steve “Stinger” Read was running solo in V6/M, but certainly wasn’t resting on his laurels, a storming 95.79 put him in the record books with a speed that will prove hard to beat in the future. Sidewinder Chris Howell snatched back his old record in L6/K running a credible 82.77, and two new members of the 100mph club upped the records in their relevant classes, Steve Withers at 104.28 in V8/C and Jim Henshaw with 105.30 in L4/R. Whilst we’re on the subject of running 100mph, two girls from the Beaters made their way into the club, both running L8/C, Julie Evans and Rebecca Dunn ran 102.39 and 101.28 respectively. They are the first females to personally hit 100mph on the sand, so congratulations to both of them. By the end of play, everyone had the chance for three runs, and they certainly made the most of them. Fences were removed, ropes taken down, with some of them already under cover of the approaching tide, and everything returned to the headland, where within an hour, there was no evidence of what had played out before, as the ocean washed away all traces. The traditional final return to the pits, with all the cars moving en masse from the holding area at the top back down the course it’s something you don’t have to miss! This is a sight and sound seen nowhere else on this planet, and even without the racing, is reason enough to make the trek to South Wales

New members of the 100mph club received their T-shirts, nineteen people in total, and most were wearing the shirts straight away. Eight records fell in total, each of the drivers receiving awards, as well as the promise of a record certificate to follow in the post. The two big trophies for Fastest Vintage Engined and Fastest Overall were held till last. Jim Turnbull took the honours in Vintage with 112.48mph, leaving it to Matt Farrant and his time of 117.02 set on Saturday to take the top award, as well as another jacket from sponsors E.L.M.C.

Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100

A Grand Vision

The Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 presents an intriguing and aesthetically dynamic vision of the future of luxury mobility. A completely personal, effortless and autonomous Rolls-Royce experience, wrapped in a design that ensures a ‘Grand Sanctuary’ for its occupants, and a ‘Grand Arrival’

A GRAND VISION

The

Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 anticipates the mobility demands of the luxury customer of the future. Brought to life by Rolls-Royce after many months of study and consultation with current patrons of the brand, the car represents their clearly expressed desire for an assurance that the marque’s plans for the future of luxury personal mobility will continue to embody the key attributes that have made Rolls-Royce the preferred marque of the most discerning and powerful patrons in the world for over a Century. In presenting the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, the marque has rejected the common notion that the future of personal transport is a utilitarian and functional one. Rolls-Royce has stepped bravely into the future to propose a no-compromise, fully autonomous, coachbuilt, personalised vision to those customers who wish for an emotional attachment to their car. This reasoning led them to the first key tenet: The Personal Vision. The Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, recently presented in London, is the vision of the R.R. design team, led by Giles Taylor. This vehicle is one example of a number of possible future visions of a Rolls-Royce. Indeed, in an evolution of the Rolls-Royce Bespoke experience of today, the customers’ taste will influence the exact design of his or her Rolls-Royce and how it will be configured. RollsRoyce will design and manufacture this personal vision of each customer and make every Rolls-Royce a unique Bespoke masterpiece.

The very size of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 announces the importance of its precious cargo. At 5.9 metres long and 1.6 metres high, it mirrors the perfect dimensions of today’s Phantom Extended Wheelbase, whilst the ever constant Spirit of Ecstasy grows in stature, harking back to the regal Phantoms of the 1920s. Hand-crafted by the finest European glassmakers of today, she lights the way to the future of luxury. She is poised atop the re-imagined, yet still iconic, Pantheon grille with the red Double-R badge of an experimental Rolls-Royce.

A GRAND VISION

For the 105 years since her creation in 1911, the Spirit of Ecstasy, modelled by sculptor and artist Charles Sykes, on Eleanor Thornton, has silently guided every Rolls-Royce and its owner through the momentous events of their lives. She has stood as an elegant presence at some of history’s most notable events. Today, the ‘Voice of Eleanor’ inhabits the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, delivering the dream of an effortless future to her owners. Digitally connected to every aspect of her owners’ lives and her surrounding environment, ‘Eleanor’ becomes their virtual assistant and chauffeur, freeing them of all effort and encumbrance. Imbued with her own artificial intelligence, she works intuitively to advise her owners on itineraries, schedules and options before they leave their residence, reminding about appointments and tasks and making suggestions to ease any anticipated impediments. Entering the Grand Sanctuary of the VISION NEXT 100, our passengers step in unbowed, with consummate grace and dignity, as with the state carriages of old, taking their place on the best seat in the house. Cocooned in the futuristic but handcrafted lounge atmosphere, the coach door and clamshell canopy glide closed to envelop them in uninterrupted silence and luxury. The Grand Sanctuary is of course crafted from the most precious and contemporary of materials. True to this spirit of elegance, the cabin is encircled by the most modern handcrafted fine-line Macassar wood pa-

A GRAND VISION

Between 1950 and 1956, Rolls-Royce produced the ultimate in contemporary luxury, the Phantom IV – built exclusively for Royalty and Heads of State. Only 18 of these cars were ever produced. The later Phantom V and VI coachbuilt cars were available to anyone with the money to purchase one. As well as the Heads of State and royal families, Phantoms were the motor car of choice of the newly wealthy.

nelling, sweeping across the interior from the coach door, continuing around behind the generous OLED screen and up beside the second passenger to the side of the sofa. This ensures a continuous, beautifully clean and sculptural surface when the screen is extinguished. The centrepiece of the cabin is the beautiful sofa. The best seat in the house, it is an exquisite, futuristic interpretation of modern furniture design. Clothed in the most opulent fabrics, it gives the impression of floating within the cocoon of the cabin thanks to the artful use of lighting and modern materials. Inspired by the early regal Rolls-Royces, but also by the ground-breaking work executed on the 2015 Phantom Serenity, the designers used the symbol of ultimate elegance – silk – to clothe the sofa. This materials is combined with wool to create a beautifully textured, ivory-coloured luxurious throne upon which our passengers are conveyed, and from which they command. A final sensual touchpoint within the cabin is the finest one-off deep-pile ivory wool carpet woven especially in London, which our passengers can enjoy as they luxuriate in the ample space created by the removal of the chauffeur. This sense of space is accentuated as our passengers’ view from their seats is uninterrupted by a cockpit or steering wheel which are now superfluous. Should the passengers ask ‘Eleanor’ for visual cues, she will provide them on the transparent OLED screen that dominates

A GRAND VISION

the front wall of the cabin. Here our passengers can view information regarding their journey, their destination and the people they are expecting to meet. Or they may simply choose to retreat from the outside world and be entertained by their favourite show for a while. Or they may just contemplate the finely crafted analogue clock that hovers in a central position above the screen, which serves both as a reminder of Sir Henry Royce’s humble beginnings as an electrical pioneer making electric dynamos, and of time as the ultimate luxury. In the future, Rolls-Royce believes that its powerful patrons will wish to continue projecting their power and status in the manner of the Grand Arrival.

This truth is reflected in the most dramatic aspect of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 – its iconic, imposing and futuristic presence which ensures a Grand Arrival for its occupants. Yet whilst it powerfully expresses the future of luxury, it remains constant to the iconic tropes of any true Rolls-Royce: The Spirit of Ecstasy, the Pantheon grille, the long bonnet and the iconic proportions of the entire vehicle. From these timeless icons of Rolls-Royce design flow the graceful, sweeping lines and expressive surfaces that combine to create a completely futuristic vision of a possible Rolls-Royce exterior. The polished metal of the grille flows

up over the nose, around the base of the Spirit of Ecstasy and along the top of the suspended laser-headlight hoops, before narrowing to shoot down the side of the vehicle’s long bonnet, as a dividing line between upper and lower sections of the car. Not stopping at the extremes of the bonnet, this beautiful metal feature creates a beautiful ‘horseshoe’ as it flows along the top edge of the coach door, describes a parabola up and over the pronounced rear shoulder, encircling the rear of the glass canopy and back down the other flank. This dividing line accentuates the car’s two-tone design scheme. The upper section is entirely comprised of dark glass. It flows fluidly as a daring fastback, creating a glass canopy over the occupants that provides privacy whilst allowing them to contemplate

the majesty of the stars in the firmament above as they glide through the night. The lower section is more dramatic in its design and in what it achieves. Draped in a silk-like ‘Crystal Water’ colour scheme, its surfacing achieves a lightness that belies the vehicle’s size. From whatever angle the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 is viewed, it seems to float, whether at rest or in motion. This lightness is achieved through the paring back of this vehicle to the essence of a Rolls-Royce by the Design team, who were freed from their current constraints by the new propulsion and coach-build technologies now available to them. So, for example, where an engine would once have occupied the entire under-bonnet area of the car, a luggage compartment is positioned just aft of the front wheels.

A GRAND VISION

The luggage compartment therefore opens automatically following arrival and disembarkation, presenting two Grand Tourer cases. In the case of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, the cases are fittingly personalised to CS Rolls and FH Royce. The newly liberated Pantheon grille is now the unencumbered prow of the RollsRoyce VISION NEXT 100. It is the front of a fully enclosed and smooth-bottomed hull that echoes the form language of 1920’s Rolls-Royces, with its ‘boat-tail’, and within which the entire accommodation area is located. The Grand Arrival of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 is first signalled by the Spirit of Ecstasy and Pantheon grille illuminating to cast an ethereal, otherworldly glow from the front of the car. As this vision of the future gracefully sweeps up to its destination, the ethereal glow spreads from the trailing edge of the front wheel arch to the rear of the single coach door, signalling that something momentous is about to happen. As the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 gracefully comes to a halt, something else occurs. Hinged on the left of the vehicle, the glass canopy lifts to allow the occupant to stand whilst providing shelter from above and behind. Then, in one effortless movement, the single coach door sweeps open and a step emerges from below the running board. As a final flourish, a red light is projected, carpet-like, from the underside of the step as a welcome.

“Today, Rolls-Royce, the world’s leading luxury brand, has defined the future of luxury mobility. The Grand Arrival of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 boldly points to a bright future for our marque where our patrons’ individual demands for complete and authentic personalisation will be met through an exquisite fusion of technology, design and hallmark Rolls-Royce craftsmanship.” Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Supercars Aston Martin Vulcan and Koenigsegg One:1 take on Spain’s iconic Ascari track. Two world classracing drivers meet their ultimate race track rivals... themselves. Extreme driving challenge pushes drivers’ skill and performance to the limit to beat their ultimate digital clone on the real life race track

C L O N E R I VA L

In

Castrol EDGE’s latest Titanium Trial, two world-class drivers pushed their skills and nerve to the limit as they face the toughest competitor of their careers… their digital clone. This is the fourth Trial from the Castrol EDGE Titanium Trials series and involves two of the most iconic supercars in the world, the Koenigsegg One:1 and the track-only Aston Martin Vulcan. The aim of the pioneering challenge is to pursue the ultimate driving performance, showcasing man, machine and oil like never before. Castrol EDGE worked with ground-breaking virtual reality experts REWIND to develop and customize one of the world’s best simulators to replicate Spain’s notorious Ascari race track. Combining acoustics and a cutting-edge tactile feedback system, the simulator provides the immersive feeling of the engine, road and body impacts. The supercars were analysed comprehensively, taking into account tyre size and weight, car aerodynamics, weather conditions and even down-force at varying speed, ensuring that the simulator experience was as close to the real thing as can possibly be achieved. The two drivers each recorded 10 virtual

sessions at the Titanium Lab in London, before data of their best performances were fused together, creating their ’Ultimate Lap’. Castrol EDGE teamed up with Danish Koenigsegg test driver Christoffer Nygaard to drive the One:1 (which is one of only 6 in the world, delivering an astounding power-to-weight ratio, previously thought impossible for a road car) and British racing star and two times Le Mans winner, Darren Turner, who drove the allcarbon fibre Aston Martin Vulcan (one of only 24 such vehicles ever producedI. Darren is one of only 7 people in the world that are trained to drive this supercar. The Ascaris’s 5.425km long track includes 25 demanding and technical turns, elevation, camber changes, and airborne opportunities ensure that this track is notoriously hard to memorise and master. The latest Titanium Trial was directed by the acclaimed “Jako” who has worked on action features including Fast & Furious, Gladiator and the Bond movies, including Spectre. Under extreme pressure both drivers had to harness their skill and concentration to take on their Clone Rivals on the track. Throughout

the high-speed lap their virtual competitors were visualised live via a state of the art heads-up display. It was an exceptionally close and high-octane challenge from the onset, but against all odds both drivers managed to beat their digital ‘Ultimate Lap’ on the very last nail-biting stretch of the race. Describing his experience behind the wheel, Aston Martin Test Driver Darren Turner said: “Every aspect of the car and driver needs to be pushed to the limit when achieving the best lap times. When you’re racing one of the world’s fastest supercars using Castrol EDGE it gives you the confidence you need to push yourself and your machine to the extreme. Beating my best performance by 1.1 seconds gave me an incredible rush”.

Koenigsegg Test Driver Christoffer Nygaard said: “I always knew that being confronted by my ultimate best potential was going to be a challenge. I pushed myself harder than I might against any other rival. Beating my digital clone, if only by a hairs breadth 0.8 of a second, was incredibly rewarding”. Renowned Neuroscientist Dr Jack Lewis observed the Clone Rival Trial and commented: “Extra adrenaline on the real track was almost certainly what gave them the edge. Huge releases of this hormone acts as the ‘oil in their engines’, helping brain and muscles to speed up reflexes as our drivers get “in the zone” and beat their ultimate lap for real”.

doubt about! Tenneco Scalable Suspension Architecture can provide car manufacturers with a highly differentiated range of vehicles within one single platform. Tenneco’s Scalable Suspension concept leverages the power of the Monroe® Intelligent Suspension portfolio of semi-active and active suspension technologies to offer car manufacturers enhanced suspension systems using a flexible actuator design to easily scale up semi-active suspension systems to advanced and fully-active applications. Scalable Suspension starts with the latest generation of Continuously Variable Semi-Active Suspension systems (CVSA2) which continuously adjust shock absorber damping levels to road conditions and vehicle dynamics like speed, turning, cornering and driver inputs. The system provides optimum driving safety and improves ride smoothness and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness), achieving the optimal balance between ride comfort and handling. The continuously controlled damping works with the “skyhook” principle for body control, using additional algorithms for better road contact, steering and braking. The CVSA2 system is controlled by a powerful electronic control unit (ECU) designed to exploit the full potential of the electro-hydraulic valve system by processing input data sent from sensors placed at key locations on the vehicle. Further input signals are provided from the in-car network. The CVSA2 system uses control software that processes sensor information on wheel

motion, steering wheel angle, vehicle speed, brake pressure and other chassis control factors and sends signals that independently adjust the damping level of each shock absorber. CVSA2 dampers allow a large separation between maximum and minimum damping levels and adjust instantaneously to ensure the optimum in ride comfort and firm, safe vehicle control. Scalable Suspension offers the OEM a unique product differentiation strategy. Each combination of the three Scalable Suspension solutions can be efficiently engineered on a single OEM platform as the actuator designs share the same vehicle interfaces, several common components, production processes, sensors and ECU. By using CVSA2 as the standard premium suspension technology, the OEM can add Kinetic® roll control as an option for sports cars and/or SUVs and propose ACOCAR® as the ultimate comfort and handling solution on luxury saloons or SUVs. CVSA2/KINETIC® combines the CVSA2 technology with an interconnected hydraulic roll control system to significantly improve the comfort and handling performance of sports cars while also delivering superb on-road comfort, off-road traction and articulation performance on sports utility vehicles. In addition, the CVSA2/ KINETIC® solution is low in weight and energy consumption, helping to reduce CO2 emissions through reduced fuel consumption.

Monroe® Intelligent Suspension puts a superior level of driving experience in the hands of motorists worldwide. This electronic and hydraulic technology adapts to changes in road surface 100 times per second. It helps drivers adjust to conditions so intuitively, it’s like having a sixth sense. “Scalable Suspension responds to the increasing need for differentiation as car manufacturers seek to offer a wide variety of different driving experiences on multiple car types within a single vehicle platform” said Rudi Schurmans, Tenneco’s executive director global engineering

Using the Scalable Suspension concept, CVSA2/KINETIC® can easily be implemented as an option on platforms already equipped with CVSA2. The anti-roll bars are replaced by hydraulic connections between the corners and the system can be extended with a variety of hydraulic ride height systems including discrete lifting, continuous leveling or hydro-pneumatic. The fully-active ACOCAR® suspension system provides ultimate comfort as a result of its flying carpet-like control of body and wheel motion, combined with excellent handling. Hydraulic pumps bring energy to the suspension, resulting in better control of damping and spring forces. Oil is continuously circulated through the shock absorbers with damping valves that can each be closed independently to control car body movement. The system keeps the car body flat at all times while controlling wheel movements to improve tire to road contact. The addition of a pump means the system does not depend on the movement of the wheels to generate damping force. As a result, the ACOCAR® system controls roll, pitch and heave, providing superior handling and safety and optimizing comfort. With Scalable Suspension, ACOCAR® can easily be implemented as an option on platforms already equipped with CVSA2 by replacing the anti-roll bars by electro-hydraulic power packs on each corner. As with CVSA2/ KINETIC®, the system can be extended with a variety of hydraulic ride height systems including discrete lifting, continuous leveling or hydro-pneumatic.

In an independent survey conducted for Tenneco, 94 percent of sports utility vehicle drivers rated the overall driving experience with a semi-active suspension system as very good or excellent. In the compact car segment, 86 percent of drivers rated their overall driving experience as very good or excellent, while 88 percent of upper middle class segment drivers rated semiactive suspension systems as very good or excellent. This proves the customer requirement for a suspension that offers flexibility, control, and comfort in one, inspiring package
