The
antipodean teams from New Zealand and Australia were the winners of the 2016 outing of the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge. Bruce and Harry Washington from New Zealand won the overall prize for the Vintageants in their 1929 Chrysler 75 Roadster, while Mark Pickering and Dave Boddy from Australia won the Classic category in their 1973 Datsun 240Z.
BRUCE AND HARRY WASHINGTON (NEW ZEALAND) WON VINTAGEANTS CLASS IN THEIR 1929 CHRYSLER 75 ROADSTER
This was Bruce Washington’s third ‘P2P’ after not finishing the first time and securing fourth with son Ben in 2013. Harry, a complete novice, said: “Each country was like its

own rally. Once you crossed the border, you never knew what you were going to get. I’m so proud of my dad…and I’d go back and do it all again tomorrow.” As well as the winner’s trophy, Harry was also awarded the Philip Young Cup, presented to the best performing novice of the event. Second place for the Vintageants went to the British team of Mike Thompson and Andrew Davies, also in a 1929 Chrysler 75 Roadster, with fellow Brits Nigel Lee and Richard Turner in the 1938 Ford 62 securing third. Mark Pickering and Dave Boddy had fought hard to win their first ‘P2P’ with fierce competition in the Classic category from the Ford Escorts, Mustangs and other strong Datsun crews. Mark said: “It is an amazing feeling to have won such an iconic event, thank you to the Endurance Rally Association for another fantastic adventure, meeting up with old friends and making new friends, seeing places in the world that you would never see otherwise. The car is tired and so are Dave and I. We’re looking forward to a well-earned rest.”
By the time they reached the finish line, second place went to Ludovic Bois from France and Julia Colman from the UK in the 1969 Volvo Amazon, with Murray and Adam Jackson from Australia taking third place in their 1974 Mercedes 450 SLC. The Jackson crew also won the European Cup for the Classics while Bill Cleyndert and Jacqui Norman in the 1925 Bentley Super Sports lifted the trophy for the Vintageants.

There were also special awards presented at the prestigious gala dinner at the Intercontinental Hotel to those who stood out during the rally. Hok Kiang Sia and his son Eric from Malaysia were presented with the True Grit award for battling to catch up with the rally after the engine bay of their 1933 Rolls Royce Phantom caught fire. David and Jo Roberts from the UK won the Against All Odds award for keeping their 1954 Sunbeam Alpine on the road despite many mechanical issues that they managed to fix by themselves. The Spirit of the Rally award was presented to Australia’s Max and Julie Stephenson in the 1923 Vauxhall OD 23/60, a crew that had not completed all the time trials and checkpoints but also found time to help others in need or trouble, and to explore the countries visited on the rally. ERA Rally Director Fred Gallagher said: “Prince Borghese, the very first winner of the Peking to Paris, said it was driving the impossible, and I’m sure all of our crews would agree. But they arrived in Paris to a heroic welcome and should all be very proud of what they have achieved. The spirit amongst the whole rally has been fantastic with friendships forged that will last a lifetime. An amazing experience for all of us.” The next Peking to Paris Motor Challenge will be in June 2019, with an exciting new proposed route that will take competitors into Kazakhstan and across to Azerbaijan, Turkey and Greece. Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing unveil radical AM-RB 001 hypercar
NEVER SEEN BEFORE The revolutionary AM-RB 001 hypercar is the result of technical partnership between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing. Powered by a new, naturally aspirated V12 engine this car will be available on road and trackonly versions. Two-seats, lightweight construction, 1:1 power-to-weight ratio
NEVER SEEN BEFORE
David King: “Working at Aston Martin means you get to be a part of some truly special projects, but the AMRB 001 is a dream - a true once-in-alifetime opportunity. Of course it’s a huge engineering challenge, too, but the gamechanging objectives of this programme have a uniquely energising effect on everyone involved. We have world-class people and facilities at Gaydon. We’re all motivated to achieve great things and take Aston Martin to the absolute pinnacle of road car performance”
The
three men charged with realising this shared vision are Adrian Newey,Red Bull Racing’s Chief Technical Officer and the world’s most successful F1TM designer, Marek Reichman, Aston Martin EVP and Chief Creative Officer and David King, VP and Chief Special Operations Officer. Together they spearhead a formidable alliance. Reichman and Newey are working closely on all aspects of the project, striving to ensure the AM-RB 001 is an unprecedented fusion of form and function: a car engineered to be entirely useable and enjoyable as a road car, but with the capability to perform like no road car before it on a race track. For those who crave an even more intensely focused driving experience, a track-only AM-RB 001 is also in development, the projected performance of which is in line with that of today’s LMP1 Le Mans sports prototypes. Built around a lightweight carbon fibre structure, the AM-RB 001 boasts truly radical aerodynamics for unprecedented levels of downforce in a road-legal car. Thanks to the genius of Newey’s design much of this downforce is generated through underfloor aerodynamics, leaving Reichman free to craft a pure yet breathtaking dramatic form that elegantly expresses both the AM-RB 001’s cutting-edge dynamism and the unmistakable essence of Aston Martin.
Uncompromising in all respects, the AM-RB 001 is a bespoke machine from the tyres up. It will be built by David King and his team at Gaydon, in the purpose-built facility created for Aston Martin’s original hypercar, the One-77. More details of the AM-RB 001‘s technical specification will be revealed in due course, but its heart is a new, mid-mounted, high-revving, naturally aspirated V12 engine with the potency to achieve a 1:1 power-toweight ratio; 1 bhp per kilo of weight. To cope with the extreme aerodynamic loadings at high speeds yet deliver the on-road usability and comfort levels that sit at the heart of the concept, the AM-RB 001’s suspension system will feature innovative technology and employ principles honed by Newey over his thirty year career. Likewise, the transmission is a clean-sheet design conceived by Newey and developed by Red Bull Advanced Technologies. While boundary-pushing performance is clearly of paramount importance, so too is exceptional efficiency and packaging. Newey’s unrivalled knowledge has enabled the AMRB 001 to be extremely light and compact, yet offer genuine comfort and space for driver and passenger and house a V12 engine. Continuing the on-going Innovation Partnership, the task of engineering the AM-RB 001 will be shared between Q by Aston Martin Advanced and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, with production taking place at Aston Martin’s Gaydon facility. Total volume will be between 99 and 150 road cars inclusive of all remaining prototypes and 25 track-only versions, with first deliveries commencing in 2018.
Adrian Newey: “I’ve long harboured the desire to design a road car. The formation of Red Bull Advanced Technologies brought me a step closer to realising that ambition, but I believed we should work with an automotive manufacturer. Aston Martin was at the top of my list. The synergy betweenRed Bull Racing and Aston Martin is clear. I knew Red Bull Racing had the ability to handle the pure performance aspects, but Aston Martin’s experience of making beautiful, fast and comfortable GT cars is of great benefit to the project. I’ve always been adamant that the AM-RB 001 should be a true road car that’s also capable of extreme performance on track, and this means it really has to be a car of two characters. That’s the secret we’re trying to put into this car - the technology that allows it to be docile and comfortable, but with immense outright capabilities”
NEVER SEEN BEFORE
Marek Reichman: “Working so closely alongside Adrian and an organisation like Red Bull Racing is a fabulous experience. By definition the objectives we’ve set for the car ensures there has never been an Aston Martin - or any car, actually - quite like the AM-RB 001. The shared challenge has been finding that magical tipping point where we achieve the most efficient engineering solutions and the most beautiful styling solutions without any compromises. My personal challenge has been expressing the AM-RB 001’s extraordinary performance and the unique way in which it delivers that performance

The new Renault Clio
EVEN MORE AGILE New Renault CLIO is more appealing than ever, courtesy of its full-LED lighting signature and the incorporation of design cues and interior ambiances that exude quality and careful attention to detail. Renowned for its dynamic capabilities, New CLIO is just as at home around town as it is on the open road
EVEN MORE AGILE
Having achieved more than 13 million sales since it was first launched in 1990, the CLIO is the bestselling French car of all time. That success story now continues with New CLIO which will go on sale in more than 100 countries from September 2016. In order to keep apace with this success, the Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia will become the fourth factory to assemble New CLIO from February 2017, in addition to Bursa in Turkey, Flins and Dieppe in France for Renault Sport versions
New
CLIO stands apart from the competition thanks to its full-LED front lighting signature. At the front, full LED “Pure Vision” headlights fulfil the dual function of dipped and main beam. This technology enhances the vehicle’s appearance as well as safety by emitting a light that is 20 percent more powerful than a halogen beam whilst at the same time reducing glare. On higher-end versions, New CLIO’s headlamps additionally incorporate C-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), emblematic of the brand’s new lighting signature. The permanent rear LED lights mirror this look by similarly adopting a C-shaped design (depending on version, hatchback body type only). In its entry-level and mid-range versions, New CLIO benefits from LED Daytime Running Lights and a chrome trim along the bottom of the grille. At the front, the top grille that houses the logo has been redesigned, as has the lower grille which is now visibly broader and more modern. At the rear, the skirt has been redesigned for additional robustness. Meanwhile, four new colours have been added to the existing selection (Intense Red, Titanium Grey, Pearly White and Iron Blue), along with new wheel and wheel trim designs. The New CLIO benefits from the introduction of materials more usually employed by Renault’s top-of-the-range models. The texture of its plastics is of a higher visual and tactile quality,

higher grades, the design of the seats is more enveloping for superior lateral support. Thanks to its new customisation programme, New CLIO can be purchased in more than 30 different colour combinations. Customers are invited to choose from: • five roof decals (graded design or single colour) and painted door mirrors for a twotone effect, • four exterior customisation packs: front grill bars and side protective mouldings. New CLIO offers two new interior ambiences, namely Florida Red, Smoky Grey. The colours selected for the dashboard are no longer dictated by those of the seat fabrics, allowing the customer greater freedom when it comes to customisation.
its chrome is subtler, with less gleam, and the colours inside the cabin are more refined. The steering wheel has been redesigned, with the discarding of some of its plastic components giving it a more upmarket feel in keeping with the rest of New CLIO’s cabin. In higher-end versions, it is trimmed with full-grain leather. The gear lever, as well as the door panels, have been redesigned for a greater impression of quality. Now in a single housing, the armrests are more aesthetically pleasing thanks to a new grained finish. The seat fabrics are of a higher quality across the board and, in
NEW EQUIPMENT THAT PROVIDES AGILITY AND CONNECTIVITY New CLIO is firmly in tune with the times courtesy of R&Go®, a simple yet ingenious system that instantly connects the vehicle with its user’s smartphone. With their smartphone placed in the universal cradle, and thanks to a special application, users can easily and intuitively access the car’s most frequently employed functions which have been separated into four different areas: Navigation, Phone, Multimedia and Vehicle. Mid-range versions of New CLIO come with Media Nav Evolution, a comprehensive multimedia system that offers the best benefitcost ratio on the market, as evidenced by the wealth of features it incorporates.
EVEN MORE AGILE
Ali Kassaï - Head of Product Planning: “CLIO embodies Renault’s acclaimed reputation for delivering larger car attributes in a compact, yet affordable vehicle. Since 2012, the Renault CLIO has won over an increasingly large fan base thanks to its style and versatility, as well as through the generosity of its equipment package. New CLIO gains maturity and combines painstaking attention to detail and styling with driving pleasure, advanced connectivity and innovative features to facilitate driving and travelling comfort”
Media Nav Evolution incorporates a dashboard-mounted 7-inch touch screen display and offers features such as navigation with traffic information, Bluetooth connectivity to enable use of the telephone and listening to music streamed from a smartphone, as well as rear view camera display and the Driving Eco2 function, which provides drivers with information about the way they drive and tips on how to improve their fuel economy. Renault R-LINK Evolution and its suite of connected services constitute a comprehensive multimedia system that incorporate: • TomTom® navigation, including real-time traffic information (TomTom® Live services) and road safety warnings (Coyote Series), with a year’s free subscription (depending on market), • Bluetooth and 3G functions, • DAB radio (depending on market), • voice recognition, • photo playback and video streaming (when the vehicle is stationary), • Renault R-LINK Store, providing access to a wide and varied catalogue of applications, • management of the new driver aids (depending on version). EVEN MORE AGILE Since the very first generation of the model, the CLIO’s reputation has been founded on its ability to cope with city motoring and driving on long distance with equal ease. Thanks to its driving aids, New CLIO marks another step forward again in terms of agility and versatility. It comes with sensors fitted all around the
EVEN MORE AGILE
vehicle, making the car particularly manoeuvrable, even in the trickiest driving and parking situations. In addition to its rear parking sensor, and depending on the version, New CLIO offers a front parking sensor and a rear view camera to simplify manoeuvres and help to avoid the bumps and scrapes that are a daily risk of driving in an urban environment. The introduction of the Easy Park Assist system on higher-end versions makes parking manoeuvre easier. The driver begins by indicating what type of parking they are looking for, be it parallel, perpendicular or diagonal. When the vehicle is travelling at speeds below 30kph, this system detects all available spaces that are big enough to accommodate New CLIO. Once a suitable space has been identified, the system calculates and co-ordinates the vehicle’s steering, meaning the driver does not need to touch the wheel and can focus solely on acceleration, braking and gear changes. Renault and Bose® have been partners since 2008 and New CLIO is the first B-segment Renault model to benefit from Bose® expertise in the design and development of its audio system. The incomparable experience of listening to Bose® sound transforms New CLIO’s cabin into a veritable concert hall, producing authentic, clear and realistic music worthy of a live performance. This audio experience is achieved via a system whose development has been specifically tailored to New CLIO, with no fewer than seven high-performance loudspeakers.
NEW POWERTRAINS New CLIO has expanded its diesel offering with the addition of a unit that promises more power and enhanced driving enjoyment: the Energy 1.5 dCi 110 mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Equipped with both Stop & Start technology and a system that recovers energy under braking and deceleration, this engine delivers 110hp at 4,000rpm and 260Nm of torque at 1,750rpm. A new turbo design makes this engine extremely responsive at lower revs. New CLIO range also includes the petrol Energy TCe 120 engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Offering an alternative to the EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) automatic transmission, this manual option will target cost-conscious customers who wish to retain complete driving control. Benefitting from direct injection, turbocharging and Stop & Start technology, this unit delivers 205Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. New CLIO also offers one of the widest ranges of diesel engines around, with a choice between 75hp, 90hp or 110hp units and either manual or EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission. Its petrol line-up is similarly encompassing, with options for 75hp, 90hp or 120hp and either manual or EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission. By adding to that list the petrol engines found in the Renault Sport variants, New CLIO offers no fewer than 11 different powertrains, making its engine/transmission line-up one of the most extensive on the market to meet the requirements of all of its buyers, be they private motorists or business customers.
EVEN MORE AGILE
The Renault Sport range provides a bridge between the world of motorsport and road cars. The CLIO R.S. boasts exceptional performance thanks to its 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and six-speed dual clutch transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts. It also innovates with an unprecedented equipment package in its segment, including Launch Control, the R.S. Drive system, which enables a choice of three driving modes (Normal, Sport and Race), the R.S. Monitor application and hydraulic compression bump stops developed by Renault Sport for rallying. New CLIO R.S. 200 EDC and CLIO R.S. Trophy incorporate all of the advances offered by New CLIO and further enhance that package by drawing upon Renault Sport’s knowledge and expertise. They also carry over some exterior styling features seen on the CLIO R.S. 16 concept car, which was revealed at the Monaco Grand Prix. The 200hp powerplant is available with the Sport and Cup chassis, while the 220hp unit can be selected for the Trophy variants. The 220hp Trophy version is capable of out-performing all other sporty vehicles in its class, taking just 6.6 seconds to sprint from 0-100kph, 14.5 seconds to cover 400m from a standing start and going on to reach a top speed of 235kph

FORMULA E (re)charge
While still not on par with what technology has to offer, Formula E has once again provided a stunning show, and hit all the right selling points
THE FORMULA E (RE)CHARGE
So with season two down in the history books, there comes the question. Did Formula E win or lose? Amidst an ocean of marketing information surrounding the electric-powered racing series, one starts wondering. No doubt, Formula E has won where everybody had tipped it to lose, and lose bad. The sport’s fundamentals. It featured top-class drivers, exciting battles, overtakes, on-the-edge action, surprises. It was a great racing show. On the other hand, there is still little to report on what Formula E was supposed to excel. Technology and innovation have yet to start their race while so much is being compromised for operational and budget reasons. How ironic that cars on the market can go for more than 500 kilometers and the supposedly advanced racing counterparts still require midrace car change two years after their introduction. Raise your hand who doesn’t think this keeps giving a bad name to electric cars, with the bro-friendly message being: “Yo man, wanna buy an electric car? Better buy two or you’ll get stuck on the road”.
Beyond this, another factor comes into play: sales. The real, outstanding victory of Formula E came on a totally different plan than real life. They created a credible version of a zero emission racing dream and they were able to sell it using its strongest pillars. No emissions, no noise. How cool. But more than that, it was the aura of environmental virginity that made the difference for car manufacturers and local authorities, even if that virginity was long gone, or never actually existed. Sort of like: “Forget that huge heavy oil/nuclear/coal plants in the suburbs, now we got Formula E racing in the city center, man we’re so eco-friendly”. In today’s world, it’s the message that counts, and Formula E struck the right chords. Also, new fans have come. And even though most of them aren’t actually interested in motorsports but mostly attracted by the glamorous novelty, if no one tries to welcome new people in, the prospects for racing will remain as sad as they currently are.

After 14 scheduled special-stages and more than 10,000kms, the two former motorcycle competitors take their first four-wheel rally-raid success. “It is emotional and joyous”, exclaimed the Peugeot driver. “I am happy to share this victory with David. It is never easy to win a rally, when you realize the caliber of the rivals you have to battle over two weeks.” Since the start in Moscow, the former twowheel stars proved to be the most consistent and avoided major incidents on this particularly demanding 2016 edition. However, Despres and Castera had a minor scare 30kms from the finish, when they received an alert for a possible turbo problem. “We had a bit of a stressful moment. I said to myself, like Nakajima at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: ‘I have no power! We opened the bonnet and happily, Jean-Paul Cottret arrived and immediately found the problem. This was another example of teamwork. It is easier to win when you are surrounded by the best! While I still have a lot to learn, this 2016 Silk Way Rally has helped me to make an important step forward in this new chapter of my racing career.” Bruno Famin (Peugeot Sport Director) said: “This team exudes team spirit, in every area. The most visible examples on this event were the way the three crews helped each other out, and then when everyone in the team pitched in to rebuild Stéphane and Jean-Paul’s car. We are naturally very pleased to have won this extremely difficult rally which enabled us to showcase the quality of the Peugeot 2008 DKR. As the small number of incidents we had to report suggests, it now forms a matured package.
Our objective was to gain more experience with the car and the crews, to reach Beijing with all three cars and win. We succeeded in ticking all those boxes!” While Peugeot triumphed, MINI also impressed, beginning with Yazeed Al Rahji and Timo Glottschalk. The X-Raid prepared cars were a model of consistency: the Saudi-German duo led the ALL4 Racing effort, finishing 25’51” adrift of Despres and Castera. Russia’s Vladimir Vasilyev and Konstanin Zhiltsov gave Team X-Raid two medalists on the Silk Way podium. The international theme continued with England’s Harry Hunt and Germany’s Andreas Schulz fourth overall, while the Kazakah-Russian pairing of Aidyn Rakhimbayev and Anton Nikolaev gave the German constructor four places in the Top 5. With six trucks entered in the Silk Way Rally, the Kamaz Master Team was looking good for yet another overall triumph. Clearly the Naberejnhye Chelny armada didn’t foresee their two impending rivals: the desert and the allnew Renault ‘Sherpa’ of Holland’s Martin Van Den Brink. Winner of six stages, the ‘Flying Dutchman’ gave the Russian squad plenty to worry about. Edouard Nikolaev in the all-new ‘Kapotnik’ suffered an oil pan issue, Andrey Karginov was slowed in the Gobi and Anton Shibalov had too many mechanical problems to count. But Dmitry Sotnikov and Airat Mardeev kept marching on. The Renault had far too many hiccups; from re-cooling to punctures and electrical concerns, but that didn’t stop VDB and crew from finishing third overall. But in the end, the law of big numbers saw Kamaz do what they now best…win. Airat Mardeev was too strong and too consistent; as he accepted the laurels form the top step of the Beijing podium as his runner-up team mate Dmitry Sotnikov looked on from step two.
After seeing their bid for victory end when they rolled on Leg 5, Stéphane Peterhansel / Jean Paul Cottret provided invaluable rear-guard assistance and flawless solidarity to the finish, helping the #102 and #104 Peugeots on several occasions. They felt comfortable in their role and admitted that the fortnight had been tremendous fun and given them a completely fresh take on the sport.

Vladimir Chagin (Project Director Silk Way Rally) said: “After two weeks and more than 10,000kms, I am so proud we have arrived in Beijing. I want to congratulate all the teams who placed their confidence in us on this tremendous adventure. I would also like to thank all of our partners and the authorities in the three countries the Silk Way Rally visited. I would also like to thank the automobile federations, because without them the 2016 Silk Way Rally would not be possible. We dreamed of becoming a major international rally and the dream has come true. The arrival in Beijing marks the conclusion of this 2016 edition, but it also begins the countdown for next year’s event, which we have already begun planning. Believe me, this is just the start of a long-term project that will be an important part of off-road racing. So, with that, all I have to say is please join us next year for edition 7 of the Silk Way Rally.”

Frédéric Lequien (Deputy Director Silk Way Rally) said: “Moscow seems so long ago from here on the podium at the ‘Bird’s Nest’ in Beijing. We have enjoyed an incredible race over the past two weeks as we have passed through some amazing places. The 2016 Silk Way Rally, the first to be held on such a large scale was a proper test of endurance for everyone. I want to thank the many volunteers and the entire organization team, who have demonstrated the ability to react to every situation that came their way and of course the crews who put their trust in us. Well done to everyone! We offered the participants an unforgettable adventure, full of emotions. The potential for future editions is limitless.”

RULES UNRULED THE HUNGARIAN F.1 GP OFFERED DIFFERENT TOPICS WORTH DISCUSSING. IN MY OPINION, ATTENTION SHOULD BE FOCUSED ON HOW SOME FIA RULES WERE INTERPRETED AND IMPLEMENTED BY THE STEWARDS DURING THE RACE IN BUDAPEST

ENRICO’S NOTEPAD Enrico Zanarini is one of the most expert and successful managers of the Formula 1circus. Since the mid 80s he’s playing a primary role in the paddock by supporting the career of drivers as Eddie Irvine, Giancarlo Fisichella, Vitantonio Liuzzi just to mention a few. Enrico also manages the activity of important sponsors as he’s at the head of one of the main international sport/management agency. He has recently started writing his reflections about Formula 1 on his own blog and he has also accepted to publish the more interesting thoughts on RACE GLOBALMAG. We are happy to host his “behind the scenes” insights and truly free point of view, even if sometimes these don’t perfectly match the RGM point of view.

the controversial application of the double yellow flags warning shown during the very last lap of Q3. Corner marshals were waiving frantically their yellows when Rosberg approached that part of the circuit on his last run and everyone was surprised to see that his lap record remained intact, eventually enabling the German driver to score pole. How could that be possible if everyone else lifted the foot off the pedal, eventually aborting their quickest run? Well, firstly we must say that Nico’s on board camera shows that Alonso was no longer stuck in the middle of the track when he drove his Mercedes through that point. Caution was still on, though, and had to be respected. Rosberg’s telemetry proved that he slowed his car down, down enough for it to be accepted by the Stewards. In Hamilton and Vettel’s opinions, on the contrary, the driver’s reaction should be less deceiving in such a case. ”If coasting is as effective as lifting off to get by the rule, next time I’ll do the same” said the Championship leader, demanding a further clarification of the case before the next GP. Earlier on, Charlie & Co had been equally busy in supplying a newer version of the 107% rule which would have seen several cars wiped off Q1 due to the returning raining conditions in between runs. Some of the faulty cars were on the contrary admitted to the following phase due to “exceptional circumstances” as clarified by the judges. In my opinion a rule is a rule and it should be applied as it is written. The exception could have been made, perhaps, if ALL cars were out of the 107% mark and not just a few. Finally the rulers did face an insistent protest by Raikkonen and Ferrari pointing at a less than orthodox move by Verstappen defending his position over Kimi’s Well, let’s give a round of applause to the decision maker in this case who made sure consistency prevailed.
RULES UNRULED
“It’s been an awesome few races – Hamilton said after the winning cavalcade in Hungary - and I’ve just got to keep that kind of form up for the rest of the season. I think Spain was definitely a turning point. It didn’t feel like it was but it was rock bottom basically. The only way was up. I just managed to get my head together and get my shit together and get on with it, even though I have less engines, my mechanics had been changed. All these different things which didn’t seem to be working; I just had to deal with it. Since then we’ve pulled together. I’d love to come out of the next race with a result like this so when I do go to Spa or Monza, and have a penalty and start from the pit lane or last place, that is a minimum damage. It doesn’t mean I’m 25 points behind; I don’t really want to go back to there. I honestly feel we’re in the strongest position we’ve been in all year, and how unified we are. Today was one of the hottest races I can remember here. Looking after the tyres in those conditions was really hard, so I’m glad I managed. Thank you to everyone in the team for all their hard work - and to all the fans I have here. I don’t know why but, when I go to Budapest, I always seem to have a lot of support. I love it here so it makes for a great week”

50 YEARS OF VOLKSWAGEN MOTORSPORT
BORN IN THE USA... * All photos courtesy of Volkswagen Media Service
Formula V 1968
11th July 1966: Volkswagen Motorsport is founded as “Verband Formel V Europa e. V.” … it’ has been an interesting, long and successful history, from Formula V to three-times world rally champions
BORN IN THE USA…
Exactly
50 years ago, on 11th July 1966, a group of Munichbased traders and importers who shared an interest in sport founded the “Verband Formel V Europa e. V.” – this was the birth of Volkswagen Motorsport. However, it all started in the USA back in 1963: it was here that the car maker from Wolfsburg’s technology was used to launch the Formula Vee junior racing series. The small, single-seater racing cars – with components from the iconic Volkswagen Beetle – also made a name for themselves in Germany as re-imports. Immediately the interest in the Formula Vee spread like wildfire around the globe… as well as the national championships and competitions between the USA and Europe, there was also an unofficial world championship. By 1971 the philosophy had developed into the Formula Super Vee series, which produced eventual world champions including Jochen Rindt (A), Niki Lauda (A) and Keke Rosberg (FIN).

TRADITION: VOLKSWAGEN PUTS GREAT EMPHASIS ON PROMOTING YOUNGSTERS Still very small, the association relocated in October 1973. It moved from the Bavarian capital Munich to Hannover, where Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH entered the Commercial Register in 2004. To this day, the company is still based in Hannover. After the successful Formula Vee era, Volkswagen proceeded to make a name for itself when it came to promoting talented young drivers: record Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher (D) and Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen (DK) both started their career in Formula 3, powered by Volkswagen.

BORN IN THE USA… MILESTONES: FROM THE TOURING CAR SCHOOL TO THE DAKAR AND WRC TREBLE Volkswagen also made its mark in touring car racing and, of course, rallying. From 1988 to 2014, many young drivers learned the A to Z of motor racing in the touring car school. On top of this came class victories at the Nürburgring 24 Hours with a natural gaspowered Scirocco GT24. And let’s not forget Volkswagen’s unique run of success at the iconic Dakar Rally, at which the team claimed a hat-trick of wins with the Race Touareg from 2009 to 2011. The pinnacle of the manufacturer’s success on the motorsport scene followed when it entered the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Three years in a row – from 2013 to 2015 – Volkswagen won all three titles with the Polo R WRC: the Manufacturers’ Championship plus the Driver and Co-Drivers’ Championships with works drivers Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia (F/F). Volkswagen is keen to continue this success story in the future.

BORN IN THE USA…
Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director: “As it celebrates its 50th birthday, Volkswagen is better placed on the motorsport scene than ever before. And it boasts a very well-balanced programme: a global commitment with the Polo R WRC in the World Rally Championship, in circuit racing with the young drivers in Formula 3, and with the Golf GTI TCR in the various international TCR series. We are also well-established in the USA, with the Andretti Autosport team enjoying success on the Rallycross scene – a modern and emerging form of motor racing. As such, Volkswagen enjoys a solid and future-oriented basis in motorsport. That is cause for celebration. At the same time, it is also an obligation and motivation. We want to be successful, wherever we compete.”

BORN IN THE USA…
Formula 3 as a springboard, and the development of young talent by Volkswagen. Michael Schumacher, Tom Kristensen and other illustrious names in the world of motorsport have shown the way. One 33-race season “powered by Volkswagen” – and Max Verstappen was already on his way up to Formula One. The teenager started the 2014 European Formula 3 Championship season with Van Amersfoort Racing. And what a start it was! Verstappen’s performances impressed the bosses at Toro Rosso so much that they offered the then 17-year-old a driver’s seat in the pinnacle of motorsport for the 2015 season. And since then, Verstappen has been making waves in Formula One – especially with his trademark overtaking manoeuvres

Toyota EverTest Expedition
MISSION COMPLETE
The big and ambitious Toyota EverTest project has been successfully completed. The project took place from April to June 2016 and gathered together the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs, courageous people and the world’s highest peak, Everest
MISSION COMPLETE
Legends
are told and movies are made about Everest, but nobody has ever managed to show the real climb from its bottom to the top. It was an ambitious idea of Valdis Pelsh’s and RD Studio, a company producing documentaries, to do a real-time story about real people, the fearless conquerors of the world’s greatest mountain, that gave a start to this project. Valdis Pelsh, showman, TV and documentary host and author, says, “We began shooting a movie about the climb to Everest in spring 2015, but there was an earthquake near Everest on May 25. We had to choose between dropping the project or looking for an opportunity to undertake a second expedition. In Toyota we found like-minded people who shared our dream of conquests. After winning Toyota’s support we could worry about anything – about the Chinese not opening access to the mountain, our shooting equipment breaking down, the operators getting sick – but there was one thing we never worried about: the Land Cruisers will not fail and will get us to the final destination”.
For three months – April, May and June 2016 – this project united brave and strongminded mountaineers who took the challenge of the world’s highest mountain, and SUVs of the Land Cruiser family. The Land Cruiser 200 and the Land Cruiser Prado have again proved their right to be called “brave” cars, travelling a path of 15,250 kilometers in extreme road and altitude conditions, providing reliable support to the expedition during the climb and coming back to Moscow without a single failure. All the members of the united team – media project “Snob”, famous TV host Valdis Pelsh’s with the filming studio “RD Studio” and global web portal Yandex – were able to realize their ambitions, for they climbed Mount Everest, the highest mountain on the Earth, and collected exclusive materials to show the world’s greatest peak to as many people as possible. THE CARS The expedition started 7,000 kilometers away from the Everest base camp, and it was essential to go all this way knowing full well the cars would not fail.
Alexei Mochalov, the planner of the car expedition route, “The journey started in UlanUde, Russia, and difficulties began right there as we drove through the fields and steppes to Ulan Bator. It was March, which means the roads were all dirt. We had three ice bridges on the way. But surely the Land Cruisers didn’t let us down even there.” Christina Kozlova, director of RD Studio, “All expedition members noted the comfort and spaciousness of the Land Cruisers’ interior. Each climber had loads of bags, and they all fit. We even picked up the other crews’ luggage. And I can say as a film director: the interior is so spacious that it is always easy to shoot inside the car “. However, the cars provided reliable support not only on the way. The Toyota Land Cruisers protected the mountaineers’ lives during training climbs. The climbers totally appreciated permanent mobility and possibility to protect some team members from acute mountain sickness by coming down and having a rest below the base camp’s altitude. Alexander Abramov, President of the 7 Peaks Club, seven-time Everest climber, “Cars

in the base camp were absolutely essential. We went down four times for successful acclimatization and in previous expeditions we could do it only once. This time we could afford driving down and having a good sleep. And this is not as easy as it seems. You have to drive fifty kilometers in order to lose one kilometer of altitude.” Christina Kozlova, director of RD Studio, “We thought we had provided for everything, but at different altitudes something always broke down. Only Toyota cars never failed, while everything – and everyone – else did. During each acclimatization round someone got sick, and the only thing that could help was descending for at least a kilometer. It is hard to explain how important it is to have an SUV at hand.”
THE PEOPLE Unlike the Toyota Land Cruisers that are able to go through serious testing as they are – with the standard equipment, people – the expedition members – require rigorous training and all possible moral and physical efforts in order to climb a peak of 8 848 meters. Denis Provalov, speleologist, mountaineer, Guinness World Records holder, two-time Everest climber: “You have to train a lot. Before climbing Everest you need to climb as many other mountains as possible. And still nobody can guarantee that you will reach the top, and nobody will say it is absolutely safe. You have to learn to step back and take chances.” Since all participants received thorough training and could use timely transportation
in the event of getting sick, during the expedition all climbers stayed healthy, were able to make the most challenging climb and get back home safe. Marina Gevorkyan, Director General of Snob Project, a mountaineer: “This climb incredibly united all of us. When our team reached the top, I was overwhelmed. This is why people take up mountaineering. Working hard together, taking risks and feeling the support. And your teammate’s success makes you as happy as your own.” THE PEAK We are not the first generation to wonder why young, motivated and intelligent people with successful careers go to the mountains and demonstrate bravery to do something that has never been done befo-
MISSION COMPLETE
re. It is not the desire to look down at the world from its top or a way to prove something – it’s a challenge to oneself. And it’s up to mountains, these centuries-old giants, to decide who can climb to the top and who cannot. Alexander Abramov, President of the 7 Peaks Club, seven-time Everest climber, “Sometimes the leader understands that a climber is not ready and prevents him from going to the top. Because the climber cannot stop on his own, especially when the top is so close. The Everest is tempting, but people have to learn to swallow their pride.” Everybody wants to see Everest, but few dare climb it, and even fewer - get to the top. Thanks to the EverTest project
during which all members of the united team collected exclusive photo and video materials, all details of the Everest climb are now available to a wider audience along with the opportunity make a streetview “climb” to the top on Yandex Maps web portal. Konstantin Lysenko, Special Project Manager at Yandex, “Yandex has been shooting panoramic views of unusual places for a few years. We wanted to find something special, to attempt something hard to imagine. And we thought it would be cool to shoot a panoramic view from the top of the world. To let users ‘take a walk’ to the top of Mount Everest. The dream of millions that few can fulfill because of lack of money or health will soon come true for everybody on Yandex Maps.”
COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT Upon coming back to Moscow, the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 and the Land Cruiser Prado had a full technical diagnostics at an official Toyota dealership. Despite the most severe operating conditions at altitudes of up to 5,374 meters, the parameters of the various systems of both SUVs conform to the standards taking into account the covered mileage. There were no notes on the cars’ condition, and it only required replacing consumables. But it was not the end of trials for the legendary crossovers. The cars are ready for new achievements and will soon add them to the chronicle of their victories by taking part in new large-scale projects and extending the Land Cruisers’ boundaries.
