WHAT’S NEW

RAPIDLY GROWING The SĂŁo Paulo International Motor Show is the biggest and most important automotive event in Latin America. It achieves even greater importance in a moment when the Brazilian market is rapidly growing. The bi-annual event attracts more than 100 exhibitors, featuring many debuts, some of global importance.

Bugatti 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse Bugatti presented the 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse for the first time on the scene of South American market. The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse boasts a remarkable maximum torque of 1,500 Nm (at 3,000–5,000 rpm) from the 7.9-litre capacity of its W16 engine. The maximum output (1,200 hp) is reached at 6,400 rpm. These figures allow the car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standing in just 2.6 seconds. The top speed of 410 km/h (255 mph) makes the four-wheel drive Vitesse (like all Veyrons) the fastest production roadster ever. The maximum speed is reached on closed tracks with special safety precautions. In “normal” handling mode, the Vitesse is electronically limited to 375 km/h (233 mph). Bugatti has developed a new roof spoiler for the Vitesse that significantly reduces wind noise and buffeting in the interior. Furthermore, there will be a new windbreak

for the roadster that can be stored away compactly in the luggage compartment when not in use. Both details will also be available for the Grand Sport. Together, they allow extremely relaxed, open-top driving even at speeds of around 200 km/h (124 mph). The outer skin is made completely from carbon fibre and, consequently, the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is available in clear-coated exposed carbon fibre. Carbon fibre is also the dominant material in the interior of the Vitesse. Numerous interior parts are now made from carbon fibre like the center console extension, a cover with EB logo in the rear bulkhead leather trim (between the seat backrests) and the belt outlet covers on the seats. Each one of the 300 Veyrons and 40 Grand Sports built so far is unique. This car costs 1.9 million Euros, whereas the base price of the Vitesse lays at 1.69 million Euros.

Chery

Brazilian fuel and emission standards, and suspension tune-up more suitable to Brazilian roads. Tiggo FL, Chery’s SUV, was also showcased at the Motor Show as it is expected to be launched in Brazil next year. In 2011, Chery invested 400 million US dollars in building a wholly-owned plant in Jacarei, Sao Paulo, which will manufacture 150,000 units per year at full capacity and launch the production of new models including Celer FL in late 2013. The plant is part of Chery Brazil Industrial Park, which will attract a host of competitive Brazilian parts suppliers to form a complete auto industrial supply chain system.

Celer Tiggo FL Chery was present in São Paulo with a strog line-up of cars. Family car Celer gained good recognition. Based on the characteristics of the Brazilian market, many adjustments have been made to the model before its launch in the region, such as Flexfuel engine up to

Chevrolet Onix Chevrolet continues its renewal process for the Brazilian market. At the São Paulo auto show the General Motors’ company revealed a new small car, the Onix, completely developed in Brazil. Onix is both agile and strong, refelecting the Brazilian engineers’ expectations for a car suited for any kind of road condition. It will be offered with a 1.0 and 1.4 litre engines and it will feature an automatic transmission. This could raise the number of customers interested in the model, as such feature is not usually included in this segment. The Onix, once fully introduced in the Brazilian market, is expected to make up as much as 30 percent of Chevrolet sales for 2014 in the region.

Hyundai HB20X Santa Fe i30 Hexa Space Hyundai unveiled its latest Brazil-exclusive model, the new HB20X (small picture). The crossover vehicle, which will officially launch early next year, is part of Hyundai’s exclusive family of cars for Brazil, badged under the name `HB,’ which stands for Hyundai Brasil. The first model of the HB family, HB20 hatchback, was lauched in September. All HB models will be produced at Hyundai Motor’s new plant in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo state and sold through a dedicated dealer network. The HB20X features a front bumper with a hexagonal grille that reflects Hyundai’s new family look for SUVs and latest design philosophy, Fluidic Sculpture. The headlights have an eye-catching finish with black bezel and chrome details, while the fog lamps were redesigned to give a stronger impression. The side of the HB20X keeps the original waistline from HB20, which encompassed a robust and fluidic design. The novelties are the side black molding that wraps the whole body and its ground clearance, valuable features for more visibility and control on bad road conditions.

The roof bars offer more flexibility for carrying extra luggage, while the 15-inch dark gray alloy wheels complete the sporty image of this vehicle. Inside, the HB20X features the same high quality interior of the HB20, adding exclusive items such as sports pedals, chrome finishing for door handles and air conditioning controls. HB20X will offer Hyundai’s GAMMA 1.6 16V FLEX with 128hp engine featuring a Continuous Variable Vavle Timing and aluminum block, the most powerful in the category. Customers can choose between manual or automatic transmissions. Besides the unveiling of HB20X, Hyundai introduced two new products for Brazil: the all-new Santa Fe and i30. Hyundai also displayed a multi-purpose concept vehicle called “Hexa Space,” which first debuted at the Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi this January. SLS AMG GT3

Extreme

The 2012 São Paulo International Motor Show hosted the world premiere of the new SLS AMG GT3 “45th ANNIVERSARY”. The customer sport racing car is being built by hand in a limited edition of no more than five vehicles in Affalterbach (Germany). A number of exterior and interior modifications have been carried out for this special model. Another eye-catching feature is the striking “45 Years of Driving Performance” logo framed in silver on the GT3 racing car’s gullwing doors. Closer inspection reveals the exposed carbon-fibre structure of the gullwing doors under the matt paintwork. The doors, along with the bonnet, mudguards, boot lid, rear wings, front and rear apron, front splitter and rear diffusor, are produced in the particularly lightweight motorsport material CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic). The interior of the SLS AMG GT3 “45th ANNIVERSARY” evokes a functional racing car atmosphere. A special badge with a “1 of 5” logo on the seats alludes to the limited production run for this racing car. The standard appointments for the SLS AMG GT3 “45th ANNIVERSARY” are rounded off by a high-quality AMG indoor car cover with “45 Years of Driving Performance” logo.

Nissan reaffirms Brazil as a strategic market with the display of innovative products at the São Paulo International Motor Show, the first of which is the Nissan EXTREM concept, a car deigned for and produced in Brazil. Designed by Nissan Design America (NDA) in San Diego, California, in collaboration with Brazilian designers and produced in Brazil, the concept previews a new breed of car. By blending versatility and toughness with the agility of a compact 2+2, EXTREM is a new genre of urban compact sports car. Although strictly a concept car with no immediate plans for production, elements of EXTREM’s styling offers a glimpse into future Nissan products, for Brazil and beyond. The lower half of the body and raised ground clearance expresses the strength of the vehicle, while the sharply sloping roof line suggests its sporting intention. The combination of innovative elements such as the wraparound glass, floating roof rails and detached C pillars enhance the feeling of an open, airy cabin. A compact 2+2, EXTREM has a dedicated luggage space in the rear. The exclusive Solar Cortex body color, a deep metallic orange with radiant highlights, pays homage to Brazilian nature. Six-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels are double layered with a dark inner and brushed metal outer and provide enhanced cooling to the brakes. EXTREM’s power would be provided by Nissan’s advanced direct injection and turbocharged (DIG-T) 1.6-liter gasoline engine which shares its technology concept with the powertrain in the innovative Nissan DeltaWing Le Mans race car. EXTREM could also be offered with a choice of front or four-wheel drive with Torque Vectoring for enhanced handling capabilities.

In that sense the Cascada is more closely linked to the prestigious and classic Opel convertibles of the fifties and sixties such as the “Kapitän” and “Rekord” variants, than to the compact convertible models of the past two decades. At the touch of a button, the high quality fabric roof can be opened quickly and smoothly even while the car is moving at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Cascada is already the third new model name introduced by Opel this year after Mokka and ADAM. The new Opel Cascada has its sales launch early 2013.

KIA QUORIS A TRUE PREMIUM SEDAN Kia’s all-luxury flagship sedan, the Quoris, which goes on sale outside Korea later this year, promises high performance and a new level of luxury driving pleasure. 294 ps V6 engine with all-new eightspeed automatic transmission and a choice of four operating modes.

CLIP Kia Motors Corporation was founded in 1944 and is Korea’s oldest manufacturer of motor vehicles. Over 2.5 million Kia vehicles a year are produced in 15 manufacturing and assembly operations in ten countries which are then sold and serviced through a network of distributors and dealers covering 149 countries. Kia today has over 47,000 employees worldwide and annual revenues of US$39 billion.

Kia’s all-new luxury flagship sedan went on sale in Korea on May and goes on sale later this year in Central/South America, Asia, Pacific Area, Middle East and Africa. “Quoris is our first rear-wheel drive large sedan for more than a decade and sets new standards for advanced design, new technologies and driving performance, representing the ‘best of the best’ of Kia - comments Soon-Nam Lee, Kia’s Director of Overseas Marketing Group - Demonstrating once again our brand’s power to surprise, Quoris will entice an entirely new customer group of progressive, forwardlooking consumers to our brand for the first time.” A near-perfect front/rear weight distribution of the Quoris creates a strong foundation for balanced poise and excellent steering response, and a sophisticated blend of ride and handling qualities. Thanks to the adoption of rear-wheel drive, the front wheels are free of the task of driving the vehicle allowing the steering to impress drivers with a more natural weight and feel. Upgraded and refined V6 power Quoris will be available powered by a significantly upgraded Lambda V6 3.8-liter MPI gasoline engine with a host of improvements to boost its power, raise its efficiency and enhance its refinement – making it ideally suited to power the company’s new flagship. The normally aspirated twin DOHC, 24 valve, six cylinder engine is equipped with dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) and a variable intake system (VIS) – enabling it to generate 294 ps at 6,000 rpm and 358 Nm at 4,500 rpm. The Quoris’s engineering ensures that the V6 delivers more than 87% of its maximum torque from just 1,500 rpm for maximum driveability. The Quoris’s acceleration time to 100 kph (62 mph) is 7.3 seconds, with a top speed of 240 kph (149 mph) – achievements which are due in part to its low aerodynamic drag – just Cd 0.27. Ultimately, the upgraded Lambda V6 engine will be available in two versions, the MPI (multi-point injection) unit available from launch, and a new GDI (gasoline direct injection) unit next year – depending on market. All-new eight-speed transmission Every Quoris will come with Kia’s all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. The wide spread of ratios (from 3.665:1 to 0.556:1) guarantees brisk acceleration and highspeed refinement, while the innovative SBW (shift by wire) technology, together with the sensitive joystick control, delivers fast, smooth gear changes. Replacing conventional wires with state-of-the-art wireless connection between the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) and the eight-speed automatic transmission, the innovative SBW technology ensures precise and near soundless gear shifts. Whenever the engine is turned off with the selector left in D (drive) or R (reverse), the SBW automatically switches the transmission into P (parking mode), improving safety.

CLIP “Quoris is all about elegant simplicity, balanced proportions and simple surfaces - explains Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer - In a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the engine sits further back, pushing the A-pillar back and creating a longer hood and allowing a shorter front overhang. This creates a larger ‘prestige distance’ - the distance from the wheel center to the A-pillar. The shallow glass house is tensioned to create the ideal sheet metal-toglass ratio, gives occupants a feeling of privacy and features distinctive window graphics accentuated by a chrome inlay, to give the car a premium feel”. Independent five-link suspension With its long wheelbase (3,045 mm), wide track (1,616 / 1,634 mm front / rear) and sophisticated fully independent five-link suspension system, Quoris will deliver the quality of ride, handling, and stability that luxury sedan buyers expect.

FOCUS - KIA QUORIS

Mounted on a sub-frame to isolate road shocks, the front suspension has co-axial coil spring shock absorber units and a new friction bearing in the steering column to enhance straight-line stability and steering precision. At the rear, the suspension sub-frame also houses the rear differential. The coil springs and shock absorbers are separate units and the set-up gives the wheels 1.4 degrees of negative camber for improved cornering ability, with geometry that minimizes toe-in changes for consistent handling characteristics. The high-performance HPD dampers fitted front and rear, have sliding ASD (Amplitude Selective Damper) valves that vary their stiffness to adapt to different driving conditions. When cruising on smooth well-paved roads, the dampers are softer – enhancing ride comfort. During sporty driving damping stiffness is increased to provide more responsive handling.

Electronic air suspension delivers ultimate luxury For even greater comfort, Quoris will be available with an electronically controlled full air suspension system as standard on the top specification model. The regular dampers are replaced by Adaptive Air Dampers which are pressurized from an air storage tank and a separate air compressor mounted in the engine bay, ahead of each front wheel. A choice of four fully automatic driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow) ensures ideal characteristics for all driving conditions. When drivers select one of the four driving modes by pressing the drive mode button near the gear selector, the action activates different settings for the air suspension (where fitted), steering, engine and transmission to suit their personal preference and various road conditions. The Sport mode immediately facilitates sporty driving dynamics by making the dampers stiffer, increasing the weight of the steering and quickening the engine’s throttle response to generate more torque faster and speeding up the gear shift timings. Self-levelling, the air suspension system can operate in Automatic mode or allows the driver to select Normal mode (constant ride height), Low mode (down 15 mm) and High mode (up 30 mm), adjusting the vehicle height and ground clearance to ideally suit road conditions. When driving faster than 120 kph for more than 10 seconds, the self-leveling system lowers the Quoris by 15 mm reducing the ground clearance to 130 mm from regular 145 mm. Aerodynamics is consequently improved, resulting in high-speed acceleration and fuel efficiency improvements. At the opposite end of the system’s operating range, when approaching unpaved roads, the driver can choose to raise the Quoris’ ground clearance by 30 mm to 175 mm, enhancing ride comfort.

Taking HAC (Hill-start Assist Control) one stage further, Quoris will also be equipped with AVH (Automatic Vehicle Hold). AVH maintains the braking pressure to prevent rollback on hills. Unlike HAC, this new system also applies the brakes during a temporary stop, so that the driver does not need to keep pressing on the brake pedal to hold the vehicle. When the driver pushes the accelerator, AVN is automatically released. If the car has stopped for more than 10 minutes, AVH is automatically switched off and the system engages the EPD to secure the vehicle in the parking mode. Ultra-high tensile steel brings strength and refinement The foundation for the highest standards of ride, handling, refinement and crash safety achieved by Quoris is its all-new bodyshell which is was created using eight types of highstrength steel that account for more than 70% of its vehicle structure. Hot stamping is used to heat steel to 900º C, rapidly cool the steel and simultaneously press immensely strong components for the center pillar and roof side outer rail – improving crashworthiness. The resulting bodyshell has exceptional strength, torsional and flexural rigidity, together with modest weight and robust impact resistance. While engineering the remarkably robust bodyshell, Kia engineers paid diligent attention to detail to achieve the Quoris’ outstanding aerodynamic rating of Cd 0.27. The front grille incorporates an Active Air Flap (AAF), which closes at speed to minimize drag generated by admitting cooling air to the radiator and engine bay. This drag reduction improves fuel efficiency and acceleration at higher

CLIP The in-vehicle infotainment system available for Quoris is powered by the Intel Atom processor – making its first appearance in a Kia and jointly developed by the two companies. The touchscreen on the dashboard allows the driver to take advantage of state-of-the-art functions and services, while the backseat display supports a variety of video formats to entertain passengers. They can enjoy a rich multi-media with premium sound and formats such as MPEG1/2/4, WMV9, Divx4/5/6, Xvid and H264, plus excellent 3-D graphics.

To assist Quoris drivers the new sedan is equipped with PGS (Parking Guide System). This uses a steering wheel angle sensor and a rear-view camera to show the predicted trajectory of the vehicle on the sat-nav monitor as an aid to parking. The system features automatic steering control by an on-board computer to safely perform parallel parking. The computer takes over the steering wheel, but the driver remains in control of the accelerator and brake.

speeds. Airflow smoothing underbody panels are mounted beneath the nose, engine bay and cabin. Air deflectors are fitted ahead of each wheel. The AAF, the underbody-full-cover and air deflectors all contribute to achieving the Quoris’ class-leading Cd figure. Maximized passive protection To alleviate the effect of an unavoidable accident, Quoris is fitted with a total of nine airbags – including dual front, twin front seat side and full-length curtain airbags, plus twin rear seat side airbags and a driver’s knee bag. Pedestrian safety is an important factor in overall road safety and new Quoris features a specially shaped beam installed behind the front bumper, to absorb impacts and diminish the risk of serious knee injury in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Taking Kia vehicle refinement to a new level Kia engineers were determined to make new Quoris one of the very best-in-class for refinement – matching or beating established premium brand sedans. This level of refinement has been achieved through a variety of technologies and a great deal of attention to the smallest details. The windscreen and door windows feature extra thick, specially laminated, five-layer, sound-proofing glass. The block-type engine mountings have larger hydraulic mass dampers. Driver comfort is assured by the powered, heated and ventilated front seats trimmed in premium Nappa leather, and the premium ambience is reinforced by the superfine suede cabin head lining. For Quoris, Kia uses a two-part prop-shaft to transfer power to the rear differential. Supported by an aluminum center bearing, the shaft is fitted with a universal joint and rubber couplings on both the transmission and the rear differential side to dampen vibrations.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF THE SEVENTH GENERATION

Officially there has never been any numbering of the Golf generations by Volkswagen, so no Golf Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, Mk4, Mk5, Mk6 or Mk7. With now seven generations of the car, it is however easier to place them historically… The fact is that with exactly – as of July 31 2012 – 29.13 million units sold since 1974, the Volkswagen Golf, including its derivatives such as the Cabriolet and Variant, is one of the most successful motorcars in history.

CLIP “Six generations of the Golf: 1974 to 2012. That represents 38 years of continuous success for the world’s bestselling car with sales totalling 29.13 million. It has also meant a tremendous economic impact, safeguarding jobs, and has served as an influential measure of technical progress over the decades - says Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG - we want to continue this successful story in the seventh generation Golf”.

Design Is the Golf exterior one of the world’s most recognisable product designs? Yes ! In developing the new Golf the teams led by head designers Walter de Silva and Klaus Bischoff based their work on the one hand on a great deal of creative freedom that allows many different approaches for a new design, while on the other also on the principles of the Volkswagen design DNA. This DNA creates a unique, unmistakable language of product features and design and leaves on the one hand a familiar feeling and yet on the other a new sensation in the eyes of the observer. Over recent years, the Volkswagen designers have crystallised a selection of core elements from the brand’s history, elements such as the first Golf’s roofline, side windows and radiator grille crossbeam in its reduced form and the Golf Mk4’s typical C-pillars and wheel arches. Marc Lichte, leading designer for the exterior, explains: “We sought to underline the new

Car’s proportions with design elements. Below the door handles we have integrated the now clearly visible and very sharp character line. While this line is broken by the wheel arches, it is otherwise continuous and is stylistically reflected in the chrome bars of the radiator grille and headlights and at the back in the white lateral bars of the rear light clusters. Set deep down all the way around, this line lowers the apparent centre of gravity and makes the car appear more solid on the road. Another striking element is the new line along the side shoulder directly below the windows. This line begins at the front in the headlight, then glides under the wing mirror, which is positioned right on the line, all the way through to the rear side window, underling the premium proportions of the new Golf ”. On the rear typical Golf elements include the clear geometry of the rear lights, the rear window stretching all the way to the C-pillars and the large homogenous surface around the Volkswagen badge.

CLIP Three new engines and 4Motion all-wheel drive are available since mid-October, enriching the wide range of new Golf models. Buyers will enjoy a new generation of engines, which offer substantially better fuel economy and low CO2 values. The three new engines are: - 1.2 l 77 kW (105 PS) TSI BlueMotion Technology - 1.4 l 90 kW (122 PS) TSI BlueMotion Technology - 1.4 l 103 kW (140 PS) TSI BlueMotion Technology with ACT (active cylinder management) These engines may be combined with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG). The 4Motion all-wheel drive system is available as an option in conjunction with a 6-speed manual gearbox and the following engines: - 1.6 l 77 kW (105 PS) TDI BlueMotion Technology - 2.0 l 110 kW (150 PS) TDI BlueMotion Technology

FOCUS - VOLKSWAGEN GOLF

Lightweight design 100 kg. less weight reduces fuel consumption appreciably, but to save up to 100 kg in weight is a complex task, especially in the compact class. Volkswagen engineers were able to introduce innovative manufacturing methods reducing weight as well as enhancing safety.

If you divide the Golf up into the primary areas of electrical equipment, engines, running gear and superstructure, an analysis yields - depending on model, specification and type of engine - the following split for the weight reduction: Up to -6.0 kg = Electrical Up to -40.0 kg = Engines Up to -26.0 kg = Running gear Up to -37.0 kg = Superstructure (23 kg = body) In purely mathematical terms the total potential saving is thus even as much as 109 kilograms. Due, however, to the configuration options that can be implemented in practice, the maximum achieved in any one vehicle is 100 kg. The body must be strong and rigid to guarantee optimal safety and maximum comfort. Nonetheless, its structure should remain athletically lean, so that the overall vehicle is light and efficient. Strong yet lightweight – harmonising these two parameters continues to be one of the greatest challenges in the automotive world. Especially when the car – like the Golf – needs to be an affordable car for millions of people. A 23 kg reduction in weight with more stringent crash and rigidity requirements as well as larger vehicle dimensions – achieved without additional costs – demonstrate that this can be done successfully.

The diesel injection engines, also four-cylinder, fourvalve versions and here too generally turbocharged, initially deliver 77 kW/105 PS and 110 kW/150 PS. Just how efficiently the diesel engines work in the new Golf is shown by the TDI base model with 105 PS and average fuel consumption of just 3.8 l/100km (99 g/ km CO2). In addition, the Golf’s 150 PS TDI is also extremely efficient, as underlined by its average fuel consumption of 4.1 l/100km (106 g/km CO2). The best figures are ultimately delivered by the Golf BlueMotion: making thorough use of all the individual solutions in Volkswagen‘s technological toolkit, the new Golf BlueMotion emits just 85 g/km of CO2 and consumes on average only 3.2 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres.

Engines Volkswagen developed two completely new engine generations for the Golf. Every version is fitted as standard with a Stop/Start system (reducing fuel consumption by up to four per cent) and brake energy recovery mode (cutting CO2 by around four per cent). With all measures combined it was possible to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 23 per cent. For the first time the Golf is now also being offered with a driver profile selection system, a tool with which forward-thinking drivers can achieve a particularly efficient style of driving. There are a total of four driving modes available: Eco, Sport, Normal, Individual and, in combination with DCC (adaptive chassis control) Comfort. In the Eco driving profile engine management, air conditioning and other ancillary systems are controlled such that optimum fuel consumption is achieved. The petrol engines used are exclusively turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engines (four valves, four cylinders) and deliver 63 kW/85 PS and 103 kW/140 PS. Even the base model excels with an average fuel consumption figure of just 4.9 l/100km (equivalent to 113 g/km of CO2) – 0.6 litres less than the previous corresponding model. For the first time there will also be a Golf with cylinder cut-off (ACT active cylinder management). The model fitted with this is a 140 PS TSI, which already satisfies the future EU6 standard. Average fuel consumption is just 4.8 l/100km (112 g/ km CO2).

Innovations New assistance systems include the multi-collision brake system that automatically brakes the vehicle when it is involved in an accident in order to significantly reduce its residual kinetic energy. Triggering of the multi-collision braking system is based on detection of a primary collision by the airbag sensors. Vehicle braking by means of the multi-collision braking system is limited by the ESC control unit to a maximum deceleration rate of 0.6 g. This value is the same as the deceleration level provided by Front Assist. The driver’s ability to control the car is thus assured even when automatic braking is triggered. Also the proactive occupant protection system is making its debut in the Golf. If the proactive occupant protection system detects a potential accident situation – such as by the initiation of hard braking via an activated brake assistant – the seatbelts of the driver and front passenger are automatically pre-tensioned to ensure the best possible protection by the airbag and belt system. When a highly critical and unstable driving situation is detected – such as severe oversteer or understeer with ESC intervention – the side windows (except for a small gap) and sunroof are closed. That’s because the head and side airbags offer optimal support and thereby achieve their best possible effectiveness with windows and sunroof almost fully closed. New assistance systems also include the standard XDS electronic differential lock (as found in the previousgeneration Golf GTI), ACC adaptive cruise control plus Front Assist and a City Emergency Braking function, Lane Assist lane-keeping assistant, fatigue detection, traffic sign recognition and the latest generation of the automatic parking assistant ParkAssist including OPS (360 degree display) as well as the automated light functions Light Assist and Dynamic Light Assist. are other new technologies as well, such as progressive steering (optimised dynamic performance and better comfort), an electronic parking brake, a newly developed ergonomic sport seat (ergoActive seat), a guard against using the wrong fuel in the diesels, a new climate comfort windscreen that is also a first in this segment and a new generation of information and entertainment systems. Infotaiment systems Volkswagen is equipping the Golf with a new generation of radio and radio/navigation systems with completely new designs. All systems have a touchscreen as standard. The new device generation is available in six extension levels and in three different display sizes: 5-inch, 5.8-inch and 8-inch. For the first time, Volkswagen is implementing displays that have proximity sensors (5.8-inch display and above): as soon as the driver or front passenger moves a finger near to the touchscreen, the system automatically switches from display mode to input mode. The display mode shows a screen that is reduced to just the essentials. In operating mode, on the other hand, the elements that can be activated by touch are specially highlighted to simplify intuitive operation. The displays also have a function that enables lists to be scrolled or CD covers in the media library to be browsed by a wipe of the hand. In designing the new generation of devices, Volkswagen’s primary goal was to integrate the most advanced infotainment applications into the Golf, which should be consistently easy to use, totally intuitive and therefore safe to use while driving. Interior The slight increases in length and width, as well as the increased wheelbase and optimised track widths, have a perceptible effect on space in the interior. The Golf Trendline and the mid-range Comfortline can be ordered with a front passenger backrest that folds fully forward. In addition, the 60:40 split backrest, which is standard on all versions of the new Golf, can also be folded down. On the Comfortline and above, the Golf also has an opening in the middle of the rear seat backrest for loading long items. The space concept of the new Golf also exhibits a cargo capacity that has grown by 30 litres to 380 litres; the variable cargo floor can also be lowered by 100 mm. Significantly more room and even better ergonomics define the driver’s area: all information and entertainment systems have been completely redeveloped and updated as the consistent design

conveys a sense of sophistication of a luxury class model. The seats of the new Golf are really comfortable. All five seating positions have been redesigned in the front and back. The seats exhibit excellent core properties: wellcontoured body lines and optimal support for dynamic driving. Another new development making its debut in the Golf is the ergoActive seat with extended adjustments for the driver. Along with the familiar seat height adjustment and seat heating, new features are adjustment options for seat depth and angle, electric four-way lumbar support and… a massage function ! Model lines Available at launch in three model lines, the Trendline (base model), Comfortline and Highline (top model), the new Golf has been enhanced in all areas compared to its predecessor. Nevertheless – and this fact is attributable among other factors to the synergies produced by the Modular Transverse Matrix – it has not become any more expensive to own a Golf. In Germany, for example, the new Golf 1.2 TSI Trendline delivering 63 kW/85 PS costs €16,975. The price is thus exactly the same as the now superseded entry-level model delivering Golf 1.4 MPI. Trendline. Every seventh generation Golf sold around the world will in general be fitted with seven airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). In comparison to the previous model the added standard features on the Golf Trendline include items such as the touchscreen module with 5-inch TFT display, a fuel tank inlet with a guard to prevent putting in the wrong fuel (for the diesel versions), the (stow-away) luggage compartment cover, ECO-HMI (consumption-related graphics and information on the multifunction dashboard display), the multi-collision braking system, the electronic parking brake with Auto-Hold function, the XDS transverse differential lock, the Plus tyre pressure indicator, brake energy recovery mode, Stop/Start system and a variable floor in the boot. Some of the other features also included as standard: daytime running lights, 195 tyres (15-inch), rear diffuser, green-tinted

THE GREEN SIDE

PURE ELECTRIC ! Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive

The new SLS AMG CoupĂŠ Electric Drive actually seems to be the most exclusive and dynamic way to drive an electric car. The most powerful of all AMG high-performance vehicles is equipped with four electric motors delivering a total output of 552 kW and maximum torque of 1000 Nm. These vital statistics make this car able to be the fastest electric-drive series-production vehicle in the world. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

THE GREEN SIDE - MERCEDES SLS AMG ELECTRIC DRIVE

CLIP “The SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is setting new standards for cars with electric drives. As the most powerful gullwing model ever, it is also representative of the enduring innovational strength of Mercedes-AMG. Our vision of the most dynamic electric vehicle has become a reality. With the help of our colleagues at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, we are bringing exciting advanced technology from the world of Formula 1 to the road” said Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

with completely vibration-free engine running characteristics. The four compact permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors, each weighing 45 kg, achieve a maximum individual speed of 13,000 rpm and in each case drive the 4 wheels selectively via a axiallyarranged transmission design. This enables the unique distribution of torque to individual wheels, which would normally only be possible with wheel hub motors which have the disadvantage of generating considerable unsprung masses.

The pioneering drive package in the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is impressive and guarantees a completely innovative and electrifying driving experience: enormous thrust comes courtesy of four synchronous electric motors providing a combined maximum output of 552 kW and maximum torque of 1000 Nm. The car accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). The agile response to accelerator pedal input and the linear power output provide pure excitement: unlike with a combustion engine, the build-up of torque is instantaneous with electric motors – maximum torque is effectively available from a standstill. The spontaneous buildup of torque and the forceful power delivery without any interruption of tractive power are combined

Typical AMG: the sound of the 21st century After an elaborate series of tests as well as numerous test drives, the AMG experts have created a sound which captures the exceptional dynamism of this unique super sports car with electric drive. Starting with a characteristic start-up sound, which rings out on pressing the “Power” button on the AMG DRIVE UNIT, the occupants can experience a tailor-made driving sound for each driving situation: incredibly dynamic when accelerating, subdued when cruising and as equally characteristic during recuperation. The sound is not only dependent on road speed, engine speed and load conditions, but also reflects the driving situation and the vehicle’s operating state with a suitable driving noise. The impressive sound comes courtesy of the standard sound system with eleven loudspeakers.

Advanced Formula 1 technology: high-voltage lithium-ion battery The high-voltage battery in the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive boasts an energy content of 60 kWh, an electric load potential of 600 kW and weighs 548 kg – all of which are absolute best values in the automotive sector. The liquid-cooled lithium-ion high-voltage battery features a modular design and a maximum voltage of 400 V. Advanced technology and know-how from the world of Formula 1 have been called on during both the development and production stages: the battery is the first result of the cooperation between Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains Ltd, that supplies Formula 1 teams MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and Sahara Force India with Mercedes V8 engines and the KERS. Headquartered in Brixworth in England, the company has been working closely with Mercedes-AMG for a number of years. Formula 1 engine experts have benefited from its extensive expertise with the KERS hybrid concept, which made its debut in the 2009 Formula 1 season. The high-voltage battery consists of 12 modules each comprising 72 lithium-ion cells. This optimised arrangement of a total of 864 cells has benefits not only in terms of best use of the installation space, but also in terms of performance. As in Formula 1, the battery is charged by means of targeted recuperation during deceleration whilst the car is being driven. High-performance control as well as effective cooling of all components A high-performance electronic control system converts the direct current from the high-voltage battery into the three-phase alternating current which is required for the synchronous motors and regulates the energy flow for all operating conditions. Two low-temperature cooling circuits ensure that the four electric motors and the power electronics are maintained at an even operating temperature. A separate low-temperature circuit is responsible for cooling the high-voltage lithium-ion battery. In low external temperatures, the battery is quickly brought up to optimum operating temperature with the aid of an electric heating element. In extremely high external temperatures, the cooling circuit for the battery can be additionally boosted with the aid of the air conditioning. Quick charge function via special wall box Ideally the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is charged with the aid of a so-called wall box. Installed in a home garage, this technology provides a 22 kW quickcharge function, which is the same as the charging

performance available at a public charging station. A high-voltage power cable is used to connect the vehicle to the wall box, and enables charging to take place in around three hours. Without the wall box, charging takes around 20 hours. The wall box is provided as an optional extra from Mercedes-AMG in cooperation with SPX and KEBA, two suppliers of innovative electric charging infrastructures for the automotive industry. Eight-stage design for maximum safety To ensure maximum safety, the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive makes use of an eight-stage safety design. This comprises the following features: 1. all high-voltage cables are colour-coded in orange to prevent confusion 2. comprehensive contact protection for the entire high-voltage system 3. the lithium-ion battery is liquid-cooled and accommodated in a high-strength aluminium housing within the carbon-fibre zero-intrusion cell 4. conductive separation of the high-voltage and lowvoltage networks within the vehicle and integration of an interlock switch 5. active and passive discharging of the high-voltage system when the ignition is switched to “off” 6. in the event of an accident, the high-voltage system is switched off within fractions of a second 7. continuous monitoring of the high-voltage system for short circuits with potential compensation and insulation monitors 8. redundant monitoring function for the all-wheel drive system with torque control for individual wheels, via several control units using a variety of software By using this design, Mercedes-AMG ensures maximum safety during production of the vehicle and also during maintenance and repair work.

THE GREEN SIDE - MERCEDES SLS AMG ELECTRIC DRIVE

All-wheel drive with AMG Torque Dynamics enables new levels of freedom Four motors, four wheels – the intelligent and permanent all-wheel drive of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive guarantees driving dynamics at the highest level, while at the same time providing the best possible active safety. According to the developers, the term “Torque Dynamics” refers to individual control of the electric motors, something which enables completely new levels of freedom to be achieved. The AMG Torque Dynamics feature is permanently active and allows for selective distribution of forces for each individual wheel. The intelligent distribution of drive torque greatly benefits driving dynamics, handling, driving safety and ride comfort. Each individual wheel can be both electrically driven and electrically braked, depending on the driving conditions, thus helping to: • optimise the vehicle’s cornering properties, • reduce the tendency to oversteer/understeer, • increase the yaw damping of the basic vehicle, • reduce the steering effort and steering angle required, • increase traction, • and minimise Electronic Stability Program ESP® intervention. The AMG Torque Dynamics feature boasts a great deal of variability and individuality by offering three different transmission modes: • Comfort (C): comfortable, forgiving driving characteristics • Sport (S): sporty, balanced driving characteristics • Sport plus (S+): sporty, agile driving characteristics AMG Torque Dynamics enables optimum use of the adhesion potential between the tyres and the road surface in all driving conditions. The technology allows maximum levels of freedom and as such optimum use of the critical limits of the vehicle’s driving dynamics.

“AMG Lightweight Performance” design strategy The trailblazing body shell structure of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is part of the ambitious “AMG Lightweight Performance” design strategy. The battery is located within a carbon-fibre monocoque which forms an integral part of the gullwing model and acts as its “spine”. The monocoque housing is firmly bolted and bonded to the aluminium spaceframe body. The advantages of CFRP (carbon-fibre reinforced plastic) were exploited by the Mercedes-AMG engineers in the design of the monocoque. These include their high strength, which makes it possible to create extremely rigid structures in terms of torsion and bending, excellent crash performance and low weight. Carbonfibre components are up to 50 percent lighter than comparable steel ones (compared with aluminium, the weight saving is still around 30 percent). The carbonfibre battery monocoque is, in addition, conceived as a “zero intrusion cell” in order to meet the very highest expectations in terms of crash safety. It protects the battery modules inside the vehicle from deformation or damage in the event of a crash. The basis for CFRP construction is provided by fine carbon fibres, ten times thinner than a human hair. A length of this innovative fibre reaching from here to the moon would weigh a mere 25 grams. Between 1000 and 24,000 of these fibres are used to form individual strands. Machines then weave and sew them into fibre mats several layers thick, which can be moulded into three-dimensional shapes. When injected with liquid synthetic resin, this hardens to give the desired structure its final shape and stability. Optimum weight distribution and low centre of gravity The purely electric drive system was factored into the equation as early as the concept phase when the super sports car was being developed. It is ideally packaged for the integration of the high-performance, zero-emission technology: by way of example, the four electric motors and the two transmissions can be positioned as close to the four wheels as possible and very low down in the vehicle. The same applies to the modular high-voltage battery. Advantages of this solution include the vehicle’s low centre of gravity and balanced weight distribution – ideal conditions for optimum handling, which the electrically-powered gullwing model shares with its petrol-driven sister model.

New front axle design with pushrod damper struts The additional front-wheel drive called for a newly designed front axle: unlike the series production vehicle with AMG V8 engine, which has a double wishbone axle, the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive features an independent multi-link suspension with pushrod damper struts. This is because the verticallyarranged damper struts had to make way for the additional drive shafts. As is usual in a wide variety of racing vehicles, horizontal damper struts are now used, which are operated via separate push rods and transfer levers. Thanks to this sophisticated front-axle design, which has already been tried and tested in the world of motorsport, the agility and driving dynamics of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive attain the same high levels as the V8 variant. AMG ceramic composite brakes for perfect deceleration The SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is slowed with the aid of AMG high-performance ceramic composite brakes, which boast direct brake response, a precise actuation point and outstanding fade resistance, even in extreme operating conditions. The over-sized discs – measuring 402 x 39 mm at the front and 360 x 32 mm at the rear – are made of carbon fibre-strengthened ceramic, feature an integral design all round and are connected to an aluminium bowl in a radially floating arrangement. The ceramic brake discs are 40 percent lighter in weight than the conventional, grey cast iron brake discs. The reduction in unsprung masses not only improves handling dynamics and agility, but also ride comfort and tyre grip. Exclusive, high-quality design and appointments Visually, the multi-award-winning design of the SLS AMG is combined with a number of specific features which are exclusive to the Electric Drive variant. The front apron has a striking carbon-look CFRP front splitter which generates downforce on the front axle. The radiator grille and adjacent air intakes adorn special areas painted in the vehicle colour and with bionic honeycomb-shaped openings. They are not only a visual highlight but, thanks to their aerodynamically optimised design, also improve air flow over the cooling modules mounted behind them. Darkened headlamps also impart a sense of independence to the front section. Viewed from the side, the “Electric Drive” lettering stands out on the vehicle side, as do the AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels with their specific paint design. The SLS AMG Electric Drive comes as standard

with 265/35 R 19 tyres on the front and 295/30 R 20 tyres on the rear. The overall look is rounded off to dynamic effect by the new diffuser-look rear apron, and the darkened rear lamps. One feature reserved exclusively for the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is the “AMG electricbeam magno” matt paint finish. A choice of five other colours is available at no extra cost. When the exterior colour AMG electricbeam magno is chosen, the high-quality, sporty interior makes use of this body colour for the contrasting stitching – the stitching co-ordinates perfectly with designo black Exclusive leather appointments. AMG sports seats and numerous carbon-fibre trim elements in the interior underscore the exclusive and dynamic character of what is currently the fastest electric car. Behind the new AMG Performance steering wheel there is a newly designed AMG instrument cluster: instead of a rev counter, there is a power display providing information on the power requirements, recuperation status, transmission modes and battery charge.

The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Pinifarina owned by Italian collector, Corrado Lopresto and considered one of the first vehicles ever to include four headlights on the front, proved to be the most popular car between those taking part in the September 29 and 30 event, chosen by both judging panels appointed to identify the most beautiful car (from a technical and stylistic perspective). The knowledgeable group of judges, consisting of prominent names from the world of design and the automotive industry carefully scrutinised all the entries, in accordance with a rigorous judging criteria. “The final showdown included the 1935 Alfa Romeo

6C 2003 Pescara spider and the 1965 Ferrari Dino 166/206P and the judges debated long and hard to decide the winner - explained Adolfo Orsi, a wellknown figure in the automotive world and head of the international panel of judges - sadly there could only be one Best of Show and in the end the title went to this spectacular 6C 2500 SS Pininfarina coupé which is one of the finest examples of the art of post-war Italian coach building”. The silver trophy awarded to the Best of Show (designed by Stefano Ricci) was unveiled during the cocktail party to mark the close of “uniques special ones” held in the Conventino della Gherardesca, where managers and men of business bade each other farewell with a promise to meet again for the next edition. But the ‘Queen’ of this edition was the 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS coupé with its Pininfarina coachwork - built onto a chassis with short pitch SS with a 110-hp engine and three carburettors. This special coupé was originally ordered by an aristocratic Sicilian family that kept it until 1961, when it was then exported to England. In 1975 it was taken to the USA only to be reimported to Italy in the year 2000.

HANKOOK VENTUS S1evo2 ENGINEERED WITH RACING TECHNOLOGY Based in Seoul, South Korea, Hankook Tire is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing tyre manufacturers. Hankook invests every year around 5% of its revenues in research and development and in five R&D centres worldwide ( Korea, Germany, USA, China, Japan) develops the very latest in market-specific, customised and innovative tyre solutions. Produced mainly at the company’s state-of-the-art European production site in Hungary, Hankook’s new Ultra High Performance Flagship Ventus S1 evo² is the company’s first UHP tyre engineered with DTM racing technology. The first high-end tyre “Made in Europe” was introduced to the market in spring 2012. It has been developed in view of the new EU-labelling requirements and has been recognised for its high level of driving comfort and low rolling resistance combined with its distinctively dynamic driving characteristics. As of April 2012, the Ventus S1 evo² is factory equipped on the new BMW 3-Series versions 316d to 320d and 316i to 320i.

The Ventus S1 evo²’s sophisticated multi tread radius profile technology results in an outstanding tyre footprint shape and a significant weight reduction is achieved thanks to the use of extremely light yet highly durable steel cord material that for example is applied in the belt package, a technology already used in Hankook racing tyres for the DTM. The tyre’s innovative DTM-inspired triple layered block design with a smart outer rib blocks staircase arrangement increases the tyre’s contact patch with the surface as tyre wear progresses, ensuring consistently high traction performance throughout the tyre-lifecycle. The Ventus S1 evo² has been equipped with the latest generation of advanced silica compound with an optimised cross-linking system that additionally helps to improve the wear performance and heat aging resistance. The all new high-grip styrene polymer formula supports superior wet performance while lowering rolling resistance for better eco-friendliness. A refined cooling system with surface enlarging fins installed in the ground of the tyre’s grooves and double step micro-turbulence creating dimples positioned among the outer shoulder block edges inducing the rapid release of heat and thus ensuring a more stable handling performance as well as an increased tyre life. For a pleasant driving experience, the new Hankook UHP flagship comes with a special aerodynamic sidewalldesign that further reduces tyre noise and emphasises the tyres’ sporty look.
