YOUR VOTES ARE IN — now, finally, meet the 2023 Maggy Award winners!

A reader favorite for almost two decades, the Maggy Awards are chosen by enthusiastic voters in our community. With over 11,000 votes, this year was no exception. Thank you for weighing in strong this year!

The Maggy Awards aren’t just popular with readers — ALL of us at Cary Magazine look forward to seeing the results each year. Who won by a landslide? Who slid into first place by just a few votes? Like a college basketball game, occasional upsets are to be expected — and after all the counting is done, we pick a few of our outstanding winners, new and old, to highlight in the issue.

Meeting the winners is always a bonus. This year, I had the opportunity to meet DeShannon Morris, voted Best High School Coach for his work with the basketball team at GRACE Christian School. I was not disappointed. I could immediately tell why Morris was so deserving of this community-driven recognition — always looking for a teachable moment, he has a winning attitude and puts the lives of these young players first. He even tried to teach me and Social Media Manager Arlem Mora a few tricks on the court!

Of course, we can’t talk about the Maggys without mentioning a fan favorite — the food categories! Don’t worry, nothing was left untried (or devoured). From the lobster tacos and classic spaghetti to the monster shakes, we sampled them all, and I can vouch that they are all award worthy and worth every single calorie. Go out and try them for yourselves!

THANK YOU to everyone who voted in this year’s awards!

IF YOU’VE EVER spent time in Downtown Cary, you might have noticed Good Day Cary — a cheerful little blue gift shop located directly beside Bull City Ciderworks that literally exudes charm. Sat amongst a lively eating and drinking scene, this house turned gift shop delivers what owner Krista Wicklund noticed was lacking in the town upon relocating here from Long Island, NY: a place to browse and shop for local and unique items.

“As our youngest was finishing up high school, we decided to switch things up and move to North Carolina in 2019,” said Wicklund. “We didn’t know anyone and did not move for a job, just a new chapter.”

Little did Wicklund know that this new chapter would include another stint as a small-business owner — a role she thought she had left behind in New York. Despite all the hardships that come with owning a business, Wicklund couldn’t ignore the pull of setting up shop and creat-

ing a space that specialized in Cary hometown items and items sourced from local makers and small businesses.

“I saw an opportunity and ran with it. I am creating the place where I would want to shop,” writes Wicklund on her website.

Since its opening in July 2022, Good Day Cary has been turning the heads of locals and visitors alike — and we just had to know more!

When did Good Day Cary open, and what were you up to prior to its opening?

We moved out of our short-term rental and into our new home in February 2020, and then Covid hit. I remember saying, out loud, ‘Thank God I do not have a business to worry about,’ as I saw the hardships that small businesses had to endure. I was enjoying meeting my neighbors (outdoors) and exploring the area as best we could during lockdown. I had worked two part-time jobs

that I enjoyed, but something was missing and I really just felt unfulfilled.

What was the inspiration behind opening your business?

I saw the need for a gift shop in Downtown Cary. I loved walking around, getting something to eat, grabbing a beer, or visiting the library, but where were the cute shops? Downtown Cary is attracting more and more visitors — and residents — who are looking to spend time in the downtown area, and we’re really lacking places to shop. In the summer of 2021, I felt the time was right. My husband encouraged me to take the chance, and I started looking for a space.

What does Good Day Cary offer?

I sell happiness. I wanted to create a fun space that is welcoming and not stuffy, where people can pick up a local Cary or North Carolina souvenir, a housewarming gift, birthday card, gift for a friend, or a piece

30 APRIL 2023 small business spotlight
2023 HONORABLE MENTION

While it’s easy to shop online, nothing can replace the need to see, touch, and smell the perfect gift.

CARY MAGAZINE 31
Owner Krista Wicklund brings her dream (and some retail therapy) to downtown Cary.

of jewelry. We have all seen the resurgence of supporting local and small makers. And while online shopping is still popular, sometimes you just need to see, touch, and smell to find the right gift. That being said, I try to find items that are unique and different and not found on Amazon. We’ll have a few wellknown brands, but I will always try to source from small and local businesses when I can.

I am proud to carry Spiritiles by Houston Llew, which are handcrafted copper art pieces made in Charleston, local candles and soaps, local coasters, barware and coffee, gift books, cards, jewelry, hand bags, baby and pet items, and puzzles and art pieces by local artists that will rotate seasonally. I wanted to have an eclectic mix of items so you can find something for whatever occasion you are shopping for at different price points.

What do you love about owning a business in Cary?

I love the people. Downtown Cary has

a very laid-back vibe. Whether it is a local resident who is walking to the Farmers Market on Saturday, or someone who is staying at the Mayton for business, there is always a fun mix of people (and dogs) coming and going. I meet a lot of interesting people, and I enjoy telling them about all the great things the Triangle has to offer.

What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of owning your own business?

Let’s face it, cash flow is the most challenging aspect of most businesses. I try to strike a balance between wants and needs. Planning and budgeting is a necessary evil. My other challenge is social media. I try my best to “post and like,” but I opened a physical location for a reason — I want to interact face to face. It takes me 20 minutes to remember all the hashtags I should use. The most rewarding part of my day is when people say things like, “I’m so glad

you’re here” or, “We really needed a gift shop.” I really appreciate the positive feedback, and just want people to have a great experience when they shop. Having repeat customers and getting to know people a bit really makes it all worth it!

What are some of your favorite offerings at the store?

The Spiritiles are my favorite. Each tile is handmade and tells a story. They are brightly colored and resonate with so many people on different levels. Many people have never seen them before, and it is a great conversation starter. They are a truly unique gift.

What else should we know?

We make gift bags for any occasion and price point, and delivery is available. We ship as well. You have a request, we will do our best to make it happen! t

Best New Restaurant

A’Verde Cocina + Tequila Library is coming in hot this year by tying in one of the Maggy Awards’ biggest (and most popular) categories: Best New Restaurant. Chef Katsuji Tanabe, a Bravo television series Top Chef alumnus, has been making waves in the foodie world ever since his 5,500-square-foot restaurant opened last spring. The son of a Mexican mother and Japanese father, Tanabe enjoys sharing his distinctive take on Mexico City cuisine.

“Sometimes people may think I’m going to serve carne asada sushi rolls or tempura chimichangas, but in reality I’m not trying to put two different cuisines together,” said Tanabe. “What I do is build layers of flavor that balance well. Japanese food is rich with umami, and Mexican food is about acid and spice. My food has touches of my cultural background.” averdecary.com

Colletta

Best New Restaurant

In addition to their signature 15-layer Lasagna Bolognese (yes, you read that right), Colletta — a modern Italian American restaurant located at Cary’s upscale Fenton development — now has another claim to fame: sharing this year’s title for Best New Restaurant.

Colletta, which means “collection” in Italian, opened its door early last fall — and

for those who aren’t afraid of carbs (or are simply looking for the perfect date night), this airy, aromatic paradise is a place of dreams.

“It’s amazing to receive such a warm welcome into this incredible community,” said Culinary Director Mark Bolchoz.

Italophiles can get their fix of antipasti, pasta, pizza, seafood, and more on Tuesday through Thursday from 5–10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5–11 p.m. Bon Appétit! collettarestaurant.com

Andia’s Ice Cream

Andia’s won their fourth consecutive Maggy Award for Best Dessert in one fell scoop — which means you screamed, I screamed, we ALL screamed for their traditional and eclectic flavors and over-thetop milkshakes.

“This Maggy means the world to us to have such tremendous support of our brand from our local community,” said owners George

and Andia Xouris. “We are honored to be considered among the best that Cary has to offer!”

Andia’s award-winning, family-run ice cream company has retail shops in southeast Cary, west Cary, and an upcoming location in Raleigh Iron Works! As the weather warms up, try their signature and monthly flavors, glutenfree options, ice cream cookie sandwiches, ice cream brûlée, monster milkshakes, or a sampler flight featuring six mini scoops and two homemade waffle cone wedges (and more)! andiasicecream.com

Whether you’re looking for catering, carry-out, a quick bite with coworkers at lunchtime, or a date night paired with the perfect glass of wine, Lugano’s flexibility and creative fare keep the

customers coming (and voting), year after year.

“After the past three years or so, just being here, in business, and having our guests return and others try us for the first time is more than a great feeling,” said owner Tom Havrish. “But to be voted for by the community and our guests as their favorite Italian restaurant just makes it that much more special.”

FOOD TRUCK

Cousins Maine Lobster

If you’ve lived in the area long enough, I’m sure you’ve heard of the Cousins Maine Lobster food truck — or seen the lines firsthand! Nationally known but locally owned by Deb and Greg Keller, mouthwatering lobster rolls, clam chowder, and more can be found all over the Triangle thanks to not one, but two food trucks! For locations, follow them on social media and download their app (or visit them at Morgan Street Food Hall in downtown Raleigh).

Deb Keller, who first saw Cousins Maine Lobster on Shark Tank nine years ago, has zero regrets about taking a chance on their fresh and flavorful offerings.

“I’ve got an amazing team, and my husband is my rock,” said Keller. “We continue to have folks reach out to us for special occasions. We do weddings and catering, and it just hasn’t stopped. I love customer service — it’s what brings me joy, the stuff that makes me happy. I love the smiles, and I love when people reach out and say we have an amazing product.”

Ruckus Pizza, Pasta & Spirits

Best Appetizers/Most Kid Friendly

Ruckus Pizza, Pasta & Spirits continues to raise a ruckus by winning Maggy Awards for Best Appetizers and Most Kid-Friendly Restaurant, year after year.

“Ruckus is just that really great restaurant where everything is scratch-made,” said owner Robert Royster. “It’s like inviting all your friends over and having a great time watching a game and getting great food and appetizers that everyone likes.”

Whether it’s pizza, pasta, sandwiches, salads, burgers, or even sushi, Ruckus has something for everyone — including the little ones!

“We have won the Most Kid Friendly award for the past 10 years running. We’ve

also won Best Appetizer before several times, because we have a great selection of appetizers,” said Royster. “At a lot of family friendly restaurants, they cater to the kids, and

the adults aren’t that thrilled with the choices, but they go because the kid wants to go.

Ruckus is the place where everyone is happy!”

SideBar

If sleek cocktail bars are your scene, but you don’t feel like driving into Raleigh, SideBar in Cary — this year’s Maggy winner for Best Cocktail — might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Described as a “place where everyone (and all of their drink preferences) are welcome” by bar manager Skyler Spaulding, this fullfledged cocktail joint is the brainchild of Matthew Bettinger, his wife Catherine Bettinger, and their business partner, Jeff Kinard.

“We pride ourselves on being approachable, yet knowledgeable and experienced in creating or recommending a well-balanced cocktail,” said Spaulding. “That being said, we are also always happy to crack open a cold PBR and pour a quick shot.”

This is SideBar’s second year in a row winning Best Cocktail, and Spaulding, whose favorite cocktail is a tie between a Martini and a Martinez, couldn’t be more thrilled.

“Winning Best Cocktail helps to showcase all of the boundless effort and passion my team puts in on a daily basis. Although creating an original house cocktail is just one of the things we do here at SideBar, it is likely the largest creative process that allows us to express ourselves and our evolving skill sets.”

BREAKFAST

First Watch

Raise a toast to First Watch Cary — this year’s Maggy winner for Best Breakfast! Their egg-cellent offerings include breakfast, brunch, and lunch, all freshly made to order.

“This award means a lot to us because every day we want to make a difference,” said manager Tyler “Ty” Cancel. “Our staff takes pride in showing up daily and perfecting their craft and creating their bonds with our special guests. It means we are doing something for the community that they enjoy and find comforting, and they can actually rely on us to satisfy their needs with delicious fresh meals, fresh juices, and an amazing atmosphere.”

Cancel’s favorite menu item? The breakfast tacos, featuring fresh grilled chicken combined with spicy chorizo crumbles, scrambled eggs, and Monterey Jack cheese.

“Here at Bradford First Watch, our mission and value is to create smiles, treat ourselves and each other with dignity and respect, and work hard with positivity, resilience, and grit,” said Cancel. “We stand shoulder to shoulder; we are one team that faces challenges and celebrates success together and accepts anyone and everyone to become a part of our family.”

Stray Volts

Best Music Group

Local rock band Stray Volts might not be as big as Linkin Park (yet), but in the end, it doesn’t even matter. As this year’s winner for Best Music Group, they are obviously hitting all the right notes.

“Winning the Maggy Award is an incredible honor, and we’re grateful for the recognition,” said Marcel, Lead Guitar & Audio/Video Engineer. “It’s also a pleasant surprise, as we didn’t actively campaign for it. We won because our fans took the initiative and wrote in their favorite band, and we’re truly humbled by their support. Winning also gives us the motivation to keep pushing ourselves as performers in order to deliver the best possible show every time we play.”

With Angie on lead vocals and guitar, Jeremy on drums and lighting, John on bass and vocals, and Marcel on lead guitar, Stray Volts delivers a concert-like experience that is more than just live music — it’s an energetic performance that breaks the barrier between the stage and crowd.

Best High School Coach

Alongside their Maggy win for Best Private School, GRACE Christian’s basketball coach, DeShannon Morris, claims this year’s title for Best High School Coach.

This win was a slam dunk for Morris, who has been coaching basketball for 22 years.

“I aspire to use my job as a coach to teach life skills and transform lives,” said Morris. “I believe a coach should do two things: Teach and Inspire. I LOVE MY FAMILY and I rock with Christ!”

50 APRIL 2023

Morris says he’s grateful for the support of the leadership team at GRACE Christian and the “opportunity to work with such wonderful colleagues.” His biggest thrill, however, comes from inspiring young men and women and transforming lives.

“I want to thank Cary Magazine and all those who voted for me for this wonderful award,” said Morris. “It means a lot to me that people would take the time to vote for me. I am humbled by the support and love shown by the community at large.”

FITNESS PROGRAM

AKtivate Fitness

When it comes to local fitness programs, there is a lot to choose from but Aktivate Fitness, our 2023 Maggy winner for Best Fitness Program, seems to be worth its weight in gold!

High-energy owners Adrien King, Meagan Jacobs, and Tharu Koshy say that Aktivate is a “one-stop shop for fitness,” and with a wall full of punching bags and weights, they’re not lying. Don’t look for a

treadmill, though — they’ll get you nowhere.

“We offer boxing, kickboxing, and strength training,” said King. “A lot of people want to travel to different gyms, different places, to get different benefits, but we have all the benefits at one gym. We also have a community, and we focus on growing that community. Everyone can have a good workout, but having a good workout with good people and a good community? You can’t always get that from every gym.”

Unbelievably, Aktivate has only been open for a year — so clearly their electrifying workouts in a positive, nonjudgmental environment are working (and fast)!

“It means everything,” said Jacobs of their Maggy win. “Just to know where we started and know where we’re at. It’s just a great experience and a great opportunity.”

Based out of Cary, Beltline to Broadway originally started as RDU on Stage in 2019.

“My background was in radio broadcasting, so the idea of a podcast intrigued me,” said podcast host Lauren Van Hemert. “Plus there wasn’t a podcast solely dedicated to covering regional and community theater in the Triangle, and as a journalist and blogger for Broadway World, I was having so many amazing conversations with theater makers about their craft and creative process. I wanted to share those.”

During Covid her audience exploded, and “folks from all over the country were tuning in to our daily live chats.” Realizing that RDU on Stage and

Dana Broughton has been a pediatric physical therapist for 25 years, but now she is being recognized as the social media guru behind All Kids Are Perfect — our Maggy winner for Best Social Media Account.

“In 2020, I began researching a new intervention approach called DMI (Dynamic Movement Intervention),” said Broughton. “It completely changed my patients’ outcomes for the better and launched me on a new career path to help as many therapists and parents as I could. Currently, I am one of the first 14 practitioners around the world that is treating at the intermediate level of DMI.”

its mission had grown, Van Hermert changed the name to Beltline to Broadway, became a 501(c)(3), and started covering topics that “not only impacted our regional theater community, but also impacted other regions around the country.”

“When we moved here from Miami 22 years ago, we knew nobody,” said Van Hemert. “Now to be recognized by this amazing community, which I love, for talking about theater and the arts, is overwhelming beyond words. This is home, which makes this award truly personal and humbling and monumental for me.”

beltlinetobroadway.org

To expand her reach, Broughton started her Instagram page in 2021 which now boasts 162,000 followers.

“I realized that there were so many new graduates working in early intervention that did not have the tools from school to help the 0-3 years population,” said Broughton. “When I started treating pediatrics 25 years ago, I had no idea what to do and would have loved to have someone mentor me. I wanted to be able to share my ideas and help mentor younger therapists. I quickly grew in numbers on Instagram, and parents started reaching out to me and telling me that I was helping them as well.”

And the 2023 Maggy Award for Best Doctor goes to … Dr. James Bould!

As a Senior Clinic Manager with CORA Physical Therapy, Dr. Bould oversees several clinics in the surrounding area, but the majority of his time is spent at his home clinic in Apex — located at the intersection of Highway 55 and Apex Peakway.

“I feel incredibly honored,” said Dr. Bould on his 2023 Maggy win. “Knowing that I have impacted the quality of life of others and that they have taken time out of their busy schedules to recognize me for that effort is incredibly humbling.”

For Dr. Bould, one of the best parts of being a physical therapist is the interaction he has with his patients.

“My greatest satisfaction comes from helping patients improve their overall quality of life, whether it’s by relieving pain, restoring function, or increasing mobility, strength, and balance,” said Dr. Bould. “The opportunity and challenges for

professional growth is another reason I enjoy being a physical therapist. I have expanded my knowledge base through continuing education, achieving specialty certifications, and my administrative responsibilities. I would encourage others to consider a career in physical therapy!”

When it comes to winning Best Dentist, Dr. Bobbi Stanley knows the drill.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to have been chosen for this award for the 15th year,” said Dr. Bobbi Stanley. “At Stanley Dentistry, we take tremendous pride in the care we provide for our patients, and I am thankful to our patients and other readers of Cary Magazine for recognizing our efforts and hard work. It truly means a lot to me and our entire team of professionals.”

Stanley Dentistry is a family-owned and operated practice that has proudly served Cary and the surrounding communities since 1995. By providing a wide range of services including sedation, cosmetics, implants, surgery, family dentistry, and more, this practice continues to win a little plaque year after year (pun intended).

“My favorite thing about being a dentist is being able to help my patients achieve optimal oral health and a beautiful smile,” said Dr. Stanley. “There is nothing more rewarding than when a patient leaves my chair with a confident smile, knowing that we have made a positive difference in their life. That is something that never gets old!”

Real Estate Agent

Linda Trevor and her dynamic team have hustled their way into this year’s spot for Best Real Estate Agent — a feat that’s not unexpected, given the value they put on their relationships with clients, fellow brokers, and each other. With years of experience among them, team members Linda Trevor, Colleen Lawrence, MaryBeth Weber, and Cathy Hawkins provide their clients with honesty, drive, and a thorough knowledge of the area.

“This win is just an honor, especially in light of how many awesome brokers there are in the area,” said Trevor. “We’re just excited to be recognized.”

While some agents are just out to sell a house, the members of Linda Trevor’s team can be counted on to keep your best interests at heart.

“I always tell my clients that I think of them like my family,” said Weber. “I would not want them to buy a house that I wouldn’t want my mother or my brother or sister to buy. And I truly mean that.”

“We always say it’s not about selling and transactions, it’s about relationships,” added Hawkins.

In the end, helping clients fall in love with the community and their home is what Linda Trevor & Co. is all about.

“We like sharing what we love about the area and then kind of figuring out what they’re looking for and fitting it together,” said Lawrence. “This award is an honor, and I think it validates that we’re doing a good job.”

Best New Business (Non-Restaurant) and Best Financial Advisor

Cardinal Hill Wealth Management is sitting on not one, but two big wins this year — the Maggy Award for Best New Business (Non Restaurant) and Best Financial Advisor, Jessie Harris.

Jessie Harris, now in his 10th year of practicing, and Robert Hill, who recently completed his PhD from UNC Chapel Hill in Strategy & Entrepreneurship, have been friends since kindergarten and started their business together a year ago. The dynamic duo is rounded out by client specialist Brooke Phillips, who serves as the head of client advocacy. If you don’t need financial advice, go for the brews — Harris serves a mean cup of coffee with his fancy shmancy espresso machine (watch out, Best Coffee Shop)!

“I was so excited when I heard, and it just gave me a boost of confidence and excitement, knowing that we’re doing the right thing for our clients and that people really appreciate it,” said Harris regarding his win for Best Financial Advisor. “And it’s just an honor — there’s a lot of good folks in Cary. We just have a great group of people that we work with and I just feel really honored.”

As the sons of small-business owners, both Harris and Hill were thrilled to take home the Maggy for Best New Business (Non Restaurant) — an award that, let’s face it, doesn’t typically go to financial planners.

“We just love small business,” said Hill. “We think that it’s critical to the growth of America that we return to a place of having strong small businesses, and to be honored as the best new small business is exactly what we hoped for. We hope to be the best firm in the Triangle for the next 30, 50, 100 years, and we can only get there by continuing to make our clients happy and to exceed expectations. We hope to continue to do that for a long time.”

Fenton Best Shopping District

Fenton, Cary’s newest upscale shopping destination, takes this year’s Maggy Award for Best Shopping District.

“We are thrilled. It is such a pleasure to be recognized by the community. We are honored that our guests are enjoying our sophisticated playground,” said Jaime Nolan, Fenton’s marketing communications manager.

Unlike other shopping districts, Fenton provides a uniquely urban, pedestrian-focused experience where shopping, dining, and entertainment offerings come together. You can shop till you drop, schedule a romantic date night, or take part in one of Fenton’s many popups and free events.

“Fenton is so unique, with its connectability and walkability throughout the property highlighted by two lively greenspaces, The Backyard and Fenton Square,” said Nolan. “With fashionable retailers, beautiful landscaping, festive events, and unforgettable artwork, Fenton brings exceptional offerings that continue to draw guests back for more.”

ERICA’S MAGGY-WINNING PICKS

Erica shares a few of her favorites among this year’s winners

THE MAGGY AWARDS ARE HERE , and I couldn’t be more excited for some of the leaders and businesses in our community. It’s time to celebrate!!

Our family is proud to have lived in the Cary/Morrisville area for over a decade now. I’m constantly wowed by the beauty, the people, and the growth. It’s hard to narrow down our favorites, but here are some of this year’s winners near and dear to me.

FENTON: We always take family and friends to Cary’s new mixed-use development when they visit. There is something for everyone at Fenton, from going to a movie, to shopping and eating, to working out or relaxing on the square. My favorites include The Gatorbug boutique, Colletta, and Superica!

THE UMSTEAD HOTEL & SPA: This is the perfect spot for a staycation or to treat yourself! Personally, I’ve been saving all my gift cards to book a day at the newly renovated spa! My girlfriends and I love to pop over to the lounge for a cocktail or a bite to eat.

PRESTON FLOWERS: Whether I am planning ahead or in a pinch, Barbara McKinnon and her team always come through with the perfect arrangement or gift idea. They work incredibly hard and are dedicated to giving back to the community.

GARDEN SUPPLY COMPANY: Rooted in the area for over 30 years, GSC is my go-to place for making my porches and yard look beautiful in every season. Not only are they there to offer tips and advice on plants, but their incredible store is also packed with gifts for the home and garden enthusiast.

TOWN AND COUNTRY VETERINARY HOSPITAL:

I feel incredibly lucky to have Town and Country to take care of our fur babies. They have a beautiful facility and top-notch service that gives me peace of mind, whether I’m taking them for a checkup or dropping them off for a stay. They came in clutch when our daughter was born early and spent time in the NICU. Town and Country kept us up to date on our animals with cute pictures and quality care so that our focus could be on our daughter.

A’VERDE COCINA & TEQUILA

LIBRARY: You must go and try the cornbread! Chef Katsuji Tanabe prepares comforting dishes from the heart as well as giving back by donating his time and services to community organizations such as March of Dimes.

Erica DeLong, 2023 Maggy winner for Best Local Radio Personality Town and Country Veterinary Hospital kept the DeLongs up to date with photos of their dog, Lucy Lou, while she was boarded there. 2023 WINNER

CORBETT’S BURGER AND SODA BAR: This is a must for families in the area! Favorites include the seasoned waffle fries, gluten-free nuggets, and of course the best burgers in town! While you are there, make sure to try one of their huge assortment of classic glass bottle sodas.

REY’S RESTAURANT: You can’t beat the food, especially the steak, and Rey himself will serve you bananas foster tableside. The chocolate raspberry truffle is a must-have. Even if we are too full, we grab a piece to go.

LUGANO RISTORANTE: Grab a round booth in the bar and relax with a glass of wine. Truly deserving of Best Italian this year, I don’t skip the lasagna every time I visit.

Clearly, my foodie heart won out on this list of favorites, but you really can’t go wrong with any of this year’s Maggy winners. After all, they were chosen by you, Cary Magazine readers, and you have pretty great taste.

Be sure to stay in touch and share your favorites with me @EricaDeLong.

Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited

TRIANGLE APHASIA PROJECT

UNLIMITED (TAP) estimates that there are tens of thousands of people in North Carolina who currently have aphasia. Despite this, the majority of NC residents have no idea what aphasia actually is.

“Aphasia is a communication disorder that results from injury to the brain (i.e., stroke, traumatic brain injury, tumor, or a progressive disease),” said founder Maura Silverman, MS, CCC/SLP. “Individuals do not suffer from impairment of memory

or intellect, rather the language to understand and/or express their thoughts, ideas, and stories. There are four modalities of language (reading, writing, listening, and speech) and any or all of them can be affected by aphasia.”

Silverman, who has worked as a speech language pathologist for the past 30-plus years, was inspired to launch TAP 20 years ago after “advances in rehabilitation science began recognizing the power of neuroplasticity” (the ability for the brain to rewire

itself). The potential for recovery of speech and language functioning required a rethink on how to better serve a population dealing with dwindling health care reimbursement and shortened rehabilitation stays.

“My inspiration in developing and launching TAP was the belief that there was more to be done to help individuals and families impacted by aphasia than our traditional medical model allowed,” said Silverman. “I was not alone in my thinking and creating one of the first dozen Aphasia Centers/Programs in the country was supported by individuals traveling the aphasia journey (i.e., clients/families) and my husband/family, who said, ‘If not now, when?’”

After founding TAP, Silverman — who for years had seen the struggles of individuals with aphasia and was moved by the challenges of their families — was ushered to the front lines when aphasia hit home.

“On December 17, 2009, my understanding of the impact of aphasia was forever altered, and I shifted from sympathy to empathy,” said Silverman. “My dear, sweet mom, a young, vibrant, prophetic writer, caring nurse, and my biggest fan, suffered a massive left hemisphere bleed. She was left with right motor weakness/hemiparesis, apraxia of speech, and severe nonfluent aphasia. Over the subsequent years, my mom taught me more than any college text or research study could ever teach me. She needed tools and strategies to engage in social gatherings and a communicative partner to assist her in talking to her physician. While she graciously accepted aid, she was determined to reveal her competence,

to remain independent and live successfully despite her aphasia. There was no doubt that she made me a better human, but in the end she also made me a better therapist.”

Like Silverman, TAP Executive Director Justine Knight can also speak from a caregiver’s perspective. Knight’s father, who was diagnosed with aphasia following a stroke 15 years ago, has made great strides (and friends) since discovering TAP.

“It’s been amazing to see,” said Knight. “Since moving to North Carolina four years ago, he’s gotten really involved, so he’s practicing his communication skills every day both at the groups and also with the friends he’s met through TAP. That

practice and talking to others in the same situation as him has helped build confidence. It’s been 15 years since the stroke, and you would typically assume that people stop improving at some point, but now we know that that’s not the case. It’s like

any other muscle — when people keep practicing their communication skills, they get better. Today my dad is more talkative than anyone I know."

Silverman describes TAP as a hub and spoke model — with an office (hub) in Cary and groups/programming (spokes) out in the communities where people live, work, and play. This model allows TAP to reach across the state and provide virtual and in-person programming for clients by collaborating with NC hospital systems, rehabilitation programs, private practices, and universities.

“We start by doing a consultation with

every new client to learn about their experience with aphasia and figure out which of our programs are best for them,” said Knight. “After that, clients are welcome to join groups. You can attend one group one week, 20 groups the next week; it’s totally up to you and your schedule. It’s very easy for people to pop in and out, but we do find that once people start getting involved in TAP that they stay with us for a long time, if not forever.”

In-person meetings in the Cary office have recently started up again, but for now the majority of their group classes remain on Zoom. For less than $10 a class,

clients can access an abundance of virtual groups, led by speech therapists, for just about every interest. Examples of groups include TAP into Talking, which focuses on verbal expression, TAP Movie Club, TAP Virtual Vacations, TAP’s Nuestro Encuentro (for Spanish speakers), TAP Back to Work Group, and one of their most popular groups — TAP Zoom Into the Bible. Support groups for clients and loved ones are free, as well as their Learning to Speak Aphasia online training, offered monthly for family, friends, and those serving in the community.

“Sometimes you can find support groups, but it’s not therapy, and so what TAP offers is something in the middle,” said Knight. “It doesn’t go through insurance, it costs just a handful of dollars per group, and they also get the support from other people because they’re in these groups together. We also do customized family trainings, if requested — so we’re providing resources for the whole family. Workplaces, even.”

In 2022, Army veteran and TAP client Genty McFarland was diagnosed with cancer. During the two months spent undergoing treatment, McFarland suffered multiple strokes, leading to aphasia — a diagnosis that left her feeling helpless.

“My family has been incredibly supportive, and we were fortunate to find Triangle Aphasia, a nonprofit organization that provides resources and support for people living with aphasia,” said McFarland. “The staff and my fellow group members at Triangle Aphasia have become like family to me. The group meetings, which take place six days a week, have added joy to my day and reminded me that I am not alone on this journey. Each group has its own unique spirit and energy, and participating in them has given me a renewed sense of purpose and connection.”

Unfortunately, there are few resources out there for individuals with aphasia which can be an incredibly isolating condition. TAP believes that everyone deserves a good quality of life and the chance to connect with others, resume their passions, and improve their communication. Their life participation approach encourages people to get back to their lives.

“We don’t want them to withdraw from the world once they have aphasia,” said Knight. “We want them to go back into the world confident and capable and having the tools they need to succeed. So many people withdraw, and that’s just no way to live.”

Potential volunteers are encouraged to visit their website and fill out an interest form (or simply call or email). TAP is always looking for one-time event volunteers, people to help out in the office, or board members/committee members who can help with long-term planning.

“I believe that it takes a community to support us in our times of need, and I am grateful for the network of professionals and organizations who work together to help people like me,” said McFarland. “I hope that my story will inspire others to seek out the support they need and to never give up hope.” t

Chasing Her Dreams

EMMA PATEL IS LIVING LARGE IN THE BIG APPLE BUT NEVER FORGETS HER ROOTS

TO WATCH VIDEOS OF Emma Patel strolling across a pageant stage wearing an evening gown and a sparkling crown, you’d never know that beneath all the glamour, her goal is to perform her own stunts as an action hero in the movies someday.

The former cheerleader from Cary is dreaming big as a freshman at Pace University in New York City, where she’s studying television and film acting and soaking up all the Big Apple has to offer.

“Going from a small suburban town and landing in New York City was a big leap, but I am very much a city person,” she said in a recent Zoom interview from her dorm room. “I feel like I’m made for the city.”

At 18, she has already made her mark on her hometown. She attended Green Hope High School for two years before transferring to Crossroads Flex High School to finish her senior year.

Her dreams took a hit during the 2020 pandemic, but while the lockdown put the brakes on her prospects, it didn’t crush her spirit, and she’s making up for lost time.

“Back home, I took only one theater course and did it online because it was Covid-time,” she said. “I never got to see people who had a creative mindset like me, but now I get to collaborate with others in person, and I love it.”

Patel grew up with her mother, Joshna Patel; her stepfather, Shivas Gilotra; her brother, Dylan Patel; and their dog, Coco.

“They are my home and they’re my people, and they support me, no matter what,” she said. “They are the ones who have believed in me and helped me believe that I can achieve anything.”

Across her teen years, Patel has been racking up achievements on the pageant circuit, and to date, she has won several titles, including Miss Teen World America New Jersey, Teen Miss North Carolina Earth USA, and Miss Teen West Cary USA.

But Patel’s contributions stretch much further than the pageant stage. She has become a major fundraiser for the American Heart Association through a nonprofit she formed in memory of her father, who died of coronary heart disease when she was 10, and to honor her mother, who survived a major heart attack two years ago.

She put purpose behind her grief and formed H.E.A.R.T. for CAD (Coronary Artery Disease). So far, the organization has raised $35,000 through events she planned, participating in the Triangle Heart Walk, selling T-shirts, and organizing other activities. She is a social media ambassador for the American Heart Association.

“I am very passionate about heart disease awareness,” Patel said. “I feel it’s important because a lot of people don’t know that 93% of the population suffers from some form of heart disease without knowing it,” she said.

She is planning to host a heart walk in New York this spring.

Patel also champions sustainability. In high school, she collaborated with a teacher and built a Little Free Library out of recycled materials and installed it at the Indian Creek Greenway in Cary.

“We even dug the post hole and added the cement ourselves,” she said.

A global book-sharing initiative, the Little Free Libraries program places cabinetsized swap centers in neighborhoods and parks. The libraries encourage people to leave books they no longer need for others to read.

“This isn’t just about recycling books. It helps people who can’t afford to buy books — and I feel everybody deserves to read books of all kinds,” she said.

Patel says her passion for service was inspired by her late father.

“When my dad passed away, I wanted to find my purpose in life. And when my

mom had her heart attack, it gave me the final push to go do what I want, because I wanted to make her proud,” she said.

For Patel, paying it forward goes beyond setting up free libraries and helping raise heart disease awareness. It’s about paving the way for other young people to follow in her footsteps and do the same.

“If I were giving advice, I would tell younger kids that there will be people along the road to success who will say you are not capable of doing what you want to do, and I've experienced that firsthand,” she said. “Just let that negativity motivate you to prove them wrong, because if you want something bad enough, you're going to go get it.”

What Patel wants is action.

She counts Formula 1 auto racing and

the exciting Marvel, Harry Potter, and the Fast and Furious film series as her favorite entertainment — and her inspiration to pursue acting.

“My all-time favorite movie is Spider-Man: No Way Home, and that’s what made me realize I want to appear in action films someday,” she said. “I think my love of stunt work was sparked from my cheerleading career.”

Patel has already proved she can do whatever she sets her mind to.

Some people may think super heroes appear out of nowhere in masks and capes to save the day. But they come in all shapes and sizes, and their superpowers come to light in the good deeds they perform for their community and for humanity.

And they may even show up wearing a crown and a sash. t

Vintage Jewelry

IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T NOTICED, secondhand shopping is a global phenomenon with no signs of slowing down, and the jewelry industry is no exception. Younger generations in particular are turning up their nose at brand-new pieces in favor of the glamour of antique jewelry — a sustainable trend that we can get behind, particularly during Earth Month.

As conscious consumerism continues to define the decade, Joint Venture Jewelry — a family-owned consignment jewelry store in Cary — continues to show off their unique collection of vintage and one-of-a-kind treasures.

“Established in 1998, we have been providing one-on-one premium customer service to Cary and surrounding areas for more than 20 years,” said Jen Hankin, director of communication at Joint Venture. “In the past two decades, we’ve carried consignment, preowned jewelry from more than 5,000 individuals, dealers, and manufacturers. Because we receive new-to-us pieces every single day, our collection is ever-changing! Each time you visit, you’ll have a new and different selection of fine estate jewelry pieces to choose from.”

Whether you’re shopping for yourself or a loved one, buying jewelry secondhand is simply kinder to our planet. Recycling and repurposing jewelry whenever possible helps offset the many negative impacts of the jewelry industry — including land erosion, loss of biodiversity, leakage of harmful chemicals into the environment, and much more.

“What better way to go ‘green’ than by finding a new home for a previously used piece of jewelry? We’re here to extend the life of jewelry that no longer suits you. Our custom design and heirloom solutions also enable us to bring new life to old, dated, and unwanted styles,” said Hankin.

“You can't beat the value of purchasing preowned, estate, and vintage jewelry. Our consignment model enables us to bring you fine jewelry at prices 30-50% less than your traditional jewelry store. Like buying a certified preowned car, the original owner absorbs the depreciation. But unlike a car, there are no miles on jewelry! Everything you buy from Joint Venture Jewelry can be worn, loved, and enjoyed for generations. Plus, we’re here to do the repairs and checkups for the lifetime of your purchase.”

M Sushi AT FENTON

MICHAEL LEE isn’t just a prolific chef and restaurateur. He’s also a visionary. Consider this: No sooner had he debuted his M Sushi location at Fenton in Cary than he began building out his sixth eatery called The Test Kitchen (see sidebar on page 97 for more details).

Since opening a quartet of highly regarded Asian-inspired eateries in Durham, Lee has shifted toward expanding his culinary horizons. Thankfully, the Korea native set his sights on Cary for his latest ventures.

M Sushi at Fenton, which opened in late 2022, earned Honorable Mention Maggy Award honors in the Best New Restaurant category.

“The people in Cary have embraced us with a really warm welcome, and we are extremely grateful for it,” Lee said during a recent sit-down conversation at lunchtime.

Lee was quick to explain that the Cary location differs considerably from its Durham counterpart.

“We didn’t just want to cut and paste the same template at the new restaurant,” he said, adding that the Cary location not only has a different appearance, but it also has a distinctive menu.

The nigiri sampler is made with aged akasu vinegar (sake lees vinegar) and includes Japanese sea trout, bluefin tuna, otoro fatty tuna, and more.

“Here in Cary, we focus on nigiri and sashimi for a more traditional Japanese experience,” he said. “We also purposefully use a different type of rice and even two different vinegars. We import the Koshihikari rice grain from Japan and have it milled at a special rice factory in New York.”

While purposely devoid of any windows or natural light, the restaurant’s modern interior features a narrow dining room, striking faux stone walls, and a long, sleek bar that allows guests to watch the sushi chefs meticulously assemble their masterful creations.

Among the tempting curated small plates are a nigiri sampler; truffle-infused tuna tartare; and crudo, which involves six pieces of raw fish with tangy ponzu sauce, sweet baby cherry peppers, fried shallots, matcha salt, and more.

Nigiri and sashimi selections range from sustainably farmed caviar and Japanese black sea bream to amberjack, mackerel, and negitoro (otherwise known as fatty tuna).

When it comes to maki, standout signature rolls include Futomaki (sea trout, tuna, whitefish); Peruvian Rainbow with panko-crusted scallop and spicy tuna tartare; and Spider, which comprises tempurabattered softshell crab amid sweet chili aioli and eel sauce.

Traditional rolls are among Chef Lee’s favorites due to their simplicity and flavorforward ingredients. Order the sea trout with avocado or cucumber, the hamachi with scallion, or even the California roll. The vegan bento features seaweed salad, inari sushi, eggplant curry, maitake tempura, and potato croquette.

CARY MAGAZINE 93
Always one to consider a blue-sky future, chef and restaurateur michael Lee has his sights set on a lofty idea: “My life goal is to launch a global food franchise that is completely nonprofit,” he said. “I want to see the net profits used to help wherever needed, such as local schools in various communities.”

Seeking a next-level umami encounter?

M Sushi provides a nigiri omakase (Japanese for “entrust yourself to the chef”) experience that will deliver a multi-course meal to each person at the table. For extra zest, we recommend paying the upcharge and adding real grated wasabi.

“Our menu is constantly evolving, as I always want to push myself to innovate and improve,” Lee said.

Don’t pass up dessert. Best choice: the palate-pleasing Yuzu 5 Ways, a distinctive citrus-infused olive oil cake, ice cream, and meringue.

As for beverages, M Sushi covers all the bases with wine, liquor, sake, champagne, imported beer, and inventive craft cocktails. Try the inimitable wasabi martini or the lychee lime fizz with choice of Haku vodka or Roku gin with lychee puree, fresh lime juice, and prosecco.

Service is efficient and accommodating, with a harmonious, guest-first approach from start to finish.

M Sushi at Fenton is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner and Sundays for lunch only. Reservations are strongly recommended. t

Get ready for a cool new culinary concept.

“We named it The Test Kitchen, but it not just for testing, but rather for making anything we want,” explained Michael Lee as he gave us a sneak peek of his gastronomic incubator that’s attached to M Sushi at Fenton.

Lee envisions The Test Kitchen churning out ambitious fare like Singapore chili crabs, Italian pasta, Japanese ramen, and Vietnamese-style beef carpaccio. If everything goes according to plan, it will all happen in a modern open kitchen so guests can see, hear, and smell everything as it is prepared.

“It will have a completely different vibe to M Sushi, and the patio outside will make things even more lively,” Lee said.

Look for The Test Kitchen to open sometime this spring. Reservations will be available.

INGREDIENTS

1 1/4 oz. Gin

1/4 oz. Absinthe

1/4 oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur

3/4 oz. Lemon juice

1/4 oz. Mint simple syrup

1/4 oz. Demerara syrup

Fresh egg white

Club soda

Lemon peel

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine all ingredients through egg white in a shaker. Dry shake vigorously for approximately 45 seconds, then add ice and shake again until chilled (roughly 15 seconds). Double strain into a Collins glass filled with ice. Top with club soda. To create a nice foamy cap on the drink, let it rest for about a minute, then top again with another heavy splash of club soda to allow the froth to rise up out of the glass slightly. Express a lemon peel by twisting it with your thumb and forefingers of both hands over the top of the glass. Run the peel around the rim of the glass and set it on the rim.

GET $5 OFF YOUR NEXT VISIT

Download the Ruckus loyalty app at ruckusloyaltyapp.com and get $5 off your next visit and $10 off your second visit.

One of the things that sets Ruckus Pizza apart from other restaurants is its commitment to using fresh, high-quality ingredients in its dishes. The restaurant’s pizzas are made fresh to order with hand-tossed dough, fresh tomato sauce, and a variety of high-quality toppings, including locally sourced meats and vegetables. In addition to pizza, Ruckus offers a wide range of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrees, all made with the same dedication to quality and flavor in a scratch kitchen. The Morrisville and Apex stores even have a wonderful sushi bar with fresh-made sushi.

Another reason why Ruckus Pizza has become a favorite among families in the area is its extensive beer selection. The restaurant offers a rotating selection of craft beers, both on tap and in bottles, that are carefully selected to pair well with the restaurant’s food. This makes Ruckus Pizza a great place for parents to relax and savor a cold beer while their kids enjoy their meals. At Ruckus, everyone is happy.

Perhaps the most important aspect of Ruckus Pizza, however, is its commitment to providing a family-friendly environment. The restaurant has a dedicated kids’ menu with a variety of options that are sure to please even the pickiest of eaters. In addition, the staff at Ruckus Pizza is friendly and welcoming, and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that families have a great dining experience.

It’s no surprise that Ruckus Pizza took home the Most Kid Friendly Maggy Award yet again. The restaurant’s dedication to quality, flavor, and family-friendly dining make it a consistent favorite among families in the area. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone looking for great food and a comfortable atmosphere. Visit the Cary Ruckus in Tryon Village on Tryon Road, the Morrisville store in Park West, or the Apex location in Costco Center. Visit ruckuspizza.com for more info.

A Fish Tale

WITH SPRING GETTING into full swing, decisions are being made on annuals to add to ornamental and vegetable gardens. While your choices are obviously many, let me toss one interesting possibility your way: the fish pepper. Not only does it have a mind of its own when it comes to good looks (I’ll explain in a second), but it is a very tasty pepper, and, as an extra kicker, has an appealing provenance. Intrigued yet?

The fish pepper is an old pepper with deep roots in the New World. When Columbus wandered across The Big Pond to the Caribbean, it was already a common goody in area cuisines. In the late 1800s, the fish pepper found another home in the Mid-Atlantic region, where it was a favorite addition to many dishes in African American oyster bars and crab houses, hence the name “fish pepper.”

By the 1940s, strangely, the fish pepper’s popularity in the home garden sputtered, and it became difficult to find seeds

and plants. But its history, looks, and taste were too tantalizing to keep this pepper down long. Today, its seeds can be easily bought online (burpee.com and seedsavers.org are two good esources), and personally, it hasn’t been hard for me to buy plants locally, with the Farmers Market in Raleigh and Big Bloomers in Sanford being my latest sources.

As for appearance, my best description would be “pleasantly quirky.” The foliage of fish pepper starts out green, but as the plant matures, it takes on variegated patterns reminiscent of an explosion in a white paint factory. This occurs on some leaves, but others remain solid green. See? Quirky.

120 APRIL 2023
garden adventurer WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY L.A. JACKSON The tasty, quirky fish pepper

The 2- to 3-inch-long peppers also keep gardeners guessing as to what color they are going to be. Most begin light green, but others start as off-white fruits. On their way to mature red, some — not all — of the peppers play in the striped-green-and-white-turning-orange-andbrown twilight zone of the spectrum.

Young fish peppers have a sweet flavor similar to bell peppers but with a tingle. As the fruits mature, this tingle ramps up to a moderate heat closely compared to serrano and cayenne peppers, to which fish peppers are probably related.

Planted in a sunny, well-worked site amended with compost or commercial soil conditioner and a dose of low-nitrogen fertilizer, the ornamental, edible, historical fish pepper can certainly be a triple-treat addition to your garden this spring! t

TIMELY TIP

This spring, why not plant forever? In this case, “forever” refers to so-called forever flowers, which are also tagged as “everlastings.” These are ornamentals that are easily dried and hold up quite well in indoor arrangements. Such persistent pretties include strawflower, statice, liatris, globe thistle, yarrow, gomphrena, and celosia. The best way to dry them is to hang small batches upside down in a warm, dark, dry location such as an attic or unlit garage until they feel crispy to the touch, which for most everlastings should be in less than a month.

To Do in the GARDEN

• Besides adding fish peppers to the spring/summer veggie garden, if your green thumb is itching to get growing with warm-season edibles, the middle of this month is a good time to begin planting snap beans, beets, Swiss chard, cucumbers, dill, eggplant, watermelons, squash, and tomatoes.

• Planting warm-season vegetables in April certainly doesn’t mean growing early spring veggies has come to a screeching halt. No, there actually is still time at the beginning of this month to start another round of spinach, mustard greens, radishes, lettuce, kale, collards, leeks, cauliflower, and broccoli.

April

• Don’t apply high-nitrogen fertilizer to plants such as pyracantha, apple, quince, blackberry, or cotoneaster because it could encourage rapid new growth that makes the young limbs more susceptible to fire blight.

• Regular rains are naturally beneficial to a garden, but how do you know when Mother Nature provides too little, or even too much?

Invest in a simple rain gauge and an easy-to-use soil moisture meter to help fine-tune your garden’s irrigation needs.
