While it’s nice to check in with repeat winners, discovering new favorites is what makes this issue exceptional. We at Cary Magazine try to keep up with all the amazing restaurants, incredible organizations and top-notch businesses in Western Wake, but it’s impossible. There are just too many! That’s where our readers come in. With every vote in the Maggy Awards, you spread the word about what is best in our community. All I have to do is check out the winners (and the honorable mentions). So when photographer Jonathan Fredin and I wanted sushi for lunch, we headed to Sushi-Thai in Cary. Every year that the Maggys have been around, the independently owned restaurant has appeared in the Best Asian Restaurant category. That’s 12 years of Maggy wins and honorable mentions. From the number of votes the best restaurant categories get every year, it’s pretty obvious our readers love food and dining out. And talking about one of Cary’s best restaurants is a perfect way to introduce Cary Magazine’s expanded food coverage for 2018. In every issue we will include a Dining Guide, listing notable restaurants and food purveyors in the area. Along with the restaurant profiles and recipes we have always featured, we will add short conversations with local restaurateurs, chefs and bartenders. t an age when most people would be thinking of golf and grandchildren, Sheila Ogle is still going full throttle. Since she was first named a Cary Magazine Woman of Western Wake in 2005, Ogle has sold two businesses, started a third, helped launch a charitable foundation, and mentored many entrepreneurs. As recognition of these accomplishments and her impact on the Cary community, in October she was presented with the inaugural Women of Western Wake Lifetime Achievement Award. “So many people retire and they think, ‘I don’t have to work anymore,’” Ogle said. “Think of all the intellectual property that is in their head and the wonderful experiences that they’ve had. They could take that knowledge and that experience and share it with somebody. “I have little patience with people who don’t want to do anything.” continued on page 62

Duty to mentor
This commitment to sharing expertise isn’t idle talk, say Ogle’s longtime friends Alisa Wright Colopy and Darelyn “DJ” Mitsch, both former Women of Western Wake themselves. “Many people hold their cards of their success to their chest, not sharing how they reached their goals or even sharing the lessons of their failures,” said Wright Colopy. Founder and president of the nonprofit Fit and Able Productions Inc., she has known Ogle for 20 years. “Sheila does both routinely, as she wants to help other people reach or surpass their goals,” she continued. “Her drive to make a difference in individuals’ lives has had a tremendous ripple effect on families, workplaces and the Cary community.” Mitsch, co-founder of corporate coaching firm Pyramid Resource Group, calls Ogle a “master connector,” meeting newcomers, hearing their ideas and making vital introductions. 62

“Sheila is the 800,000volt spotlight, shining a beacon of warmth and welcoming top-notch business and community leaders to an area ripe for growth and contribution,” she said. “She has been my mentor through my early career in advertising and then as an entrepreneur and CEO. She considers mentoring to be a gift that anyone who is successful has a duty to share,” said Mitsch, who was selling ads for a Winston-Salem radio station when she met Ogle in 1979. A vision for Cary

Outside her wide circle of friends, Ogle is perhaps best known as the owner of the Queen Anne-style Guess-White-Ogle House on Academy Street, also known as the Pink House. A lifelong proponent of historical preservation, Ogle and her late

about having an impact on our community, in part because I have followed her lead.” — DJ Mitsch Pyramid Resource Group husband, Carroll, bought the house in 1997 and restored it. “We have to preserve our past,” said Ogle. “Just think if the town had torn this house down. The way that it looked, when you see pictures, the house was awful.” According to Ed Gawf, the town’s first downtown manager, the building became one of the first major assets in Cary’s revived downtown. Another was the Matthews House, which the Ogles bought in 2001. They transformed the 1915 Greek-Revival-style building into a wedding and special event venue, which Ogle sold in December 2016. “Through the ’90s and early 2000s, not much was done downtown — a lot of talk and no action. The Matthews House and the effort in developing it as a reception and events facility was during that time,” said Gawf. “It was the most significant private investment downtown.” The Ogles had a vision that downtown Cary could be something special, he says. And by investing in the area and making it work, they helped attract other business ventures. “The early efforts of Sheila and Carroll in downtown Cary, during some not-sogood investment times laid a solid foundation for what we have now,” said Gawf.

Kyle Greer, with the Cary Chamber of Commerce, agrees with Gawf ’s assessment, calling Ogle “the true pioneer in developing and redeveloping downtown Cary.” But the historic properties are only part of Ogle’s influence, Greer says. The office building on West Chatham Street, built by Ogle and her husband, was also key. “She located her company, Media Research Planning and Placement, in downtown Cary, and built one of the first new commercial buildings in downtown,” said Greer. “After she sold MRPP, she then worked to open Cary’s first co-working space, the Innovation Center, years before these types of spaces were common.” Ogle still manages the Cary Innovation Center, saying she enjoys seeing fellow entrepreneurs blossom. “The beauty of that business is to get a tenant in and see them leave,” she said. “Most of the time when I lose a tenant it’s because their business has grown exponentially, and they need more space.” Serving the community

Along with her business interests, Ogle has made time for philanthropic causes in and around Cary. She was one of the founders of the Cary Community Foundation, and also helped start the Cary Women’s Giving Network, which brings women together to promote charitable giving. “We wanted to educate women that you don’t have to be rich to be philanthropic,” Ogle said. “Each of our members gives $600 a year, and it’s a three-year
commitment. In the past four years, we’ve given away more than $73,000 to nonprofits in the Cary community.” Her church, First Methodist Church in Cary, is also near to her heart. She jokes that since selling the Matthews House, she has a new job — working on the church building

The 1997 renovation of the Guess-White-Ogle house in downtown Cary was key in the area’s redevelopment and rebirth. Photos of the house were taken before its renovation, documenting what Sheila Ogle calls its awful condition. “It took me two years to get Carroll to even think about buying it,” says Ogle of her late husband. “He knew how much time and effort and money it was going to take to preserve that past. But he knew my taste; he knew what I was going to want. I want the best of the best.”

committee. Renovations are scheduled to be finished in four years, and Ogle is especially thrilled about the “fabulous youth center” that will serve the community for years to come. Lead pastor R. Carl Frazier Jr. says Ogle has been a tireless advocate for the church and the town.
“Sheila has her fingerprints all over Cary, and her impact and influence is significant,” Frazier said. “However, I would say her biggest impact is her encouragement of so many others in pursuing their visions and dreams, both for themselves and for the community.” t

In addition to living across the street from each other, Thomas Gregory and Alaina Elliott had lots of things in common. Both went back to school to earn a college degree, have adult children from previous marriages and value their Christian faith.

laina Elliott and Thomas Gregory spent a decade living across the street from each other — never meeting until professional matchmaker Kate FreimanFox introduced them. A year later, the couple are planning their wedding. “We met at a local restaurant and were instantly attracted to each other,” said Gregory. “We shared a bottle of wine, never got around to dinner, and three hours later, we were making plans for the next date.” Online dating has become almost conventional, with most of us knowing someone who has found a spouse or partner that way. But many like Elliott and Gregory, find the digital experience unsatisfying and inauthentic. Enter the personal matchmaker. Freiman-Fox, founder of Authentic Connections and a former clinical psychologist, offers services for adult singles at every age. If finding love is important to you, she says, then using a professional shouldn’t be out of the question. “A big myth is that only losers use a matchmaker, and that is not true,” she said. “Even Michael Jordan had a coach.” Freiman-Fox founded her matchmaking service after hearing horror stories from friends about the lies and exaggerations common in online dating.

Kate Freiman-Fox, doesn't believe in soulmates. "I don’t believe that there’s just one person in this world for you," she says. "I do believe there are people you can connect with without saying much, where others might take a little more communication to get there."
Building trust with her clients is vital to effective matchmaking, she says. Having compassion for individuals while maintaining hope for the future is one way of nurturing that trust. “I will never tell a person I’ve got somebody for them — never. Nor will I tell a person that I don’t have anybody for them, because next week I’ll meet somebody who’s right for that person,” said Freiman-Fox “They have to maintain hopefulness or it doesn’t work.”
She also advises clients to approach each date as an opportunity for growth. “I can’t think of hardly anybody you can’t spend an hour with,” said Freiman-Fox. “Even if you decide otherwise, you can still practice your social skills through that dinner.” Although friends introduced FreimanFox to the man who is now her husband, her journey to love helps her understand her clients. LOCATION COUNTS: Pick a place or activity where you can talk. Avoid movies and other group activities where your date isn’t the focus. Walking dates are inexpensive, good exercise, and the boost of adrenaline will make you more attractive. MEAL PLANS? Dinner is okay, but brunch is better. If the date goes well, you can plan another activity for the rest of the day. Rethink coffee dates, as they are often too short to get to know a person. RELAX: The first date is an opportunity to decide whether or not a next date is warranted. Are you having fun? Do you feel comfortable with the person? DON’T DRINK TOO MUCH. You want to get to know each other sober. WHO PAYS? The man usually pays for the first date, but not always. Women should be prepared to split the bill. IF THINGS GO SIDEWAYS? Say you had a nice time, and thank your date. Tell them to “take care,” but resist the urge to say you will call them. It’s dishonest. This was so important she turned her search into a nearly full-time job and joined a Raleigh dating service. “I did meet some awesome guys, but it was a lot of work on my part,” said FreimanFox. “Nowadays you just go online, but no one has met those people. At the dating service, someone had met the people who had become part of the system.” Success isn’t measured in matches alone, she says. Marriages and engagements are obvious goals, but personal breakthroughs, self-discovery and jumpstarts into dating are successes too. “If I work myself out of a job, I feel like I’ve been successful,” she said. Like Freiman-Fox, Angela Kelley founded A+ Introductions as a respectful and dignified alternative to online dating. “We live in a society now where everyone is in that cafeteria mentality, and you can thank online dating for that. People want to be able to say, ‘Oh, I like this. I like that,’ cafeteria-style," said Kelley, an Apexbased clinical researcher. “Unfortunately, doing it that way — all that swiping left and right — they’re only looking at a snapshot of that person. They’re
not given a complete understanding of who that person is, and that’s important.” Getting to know her clients is an enjoyable process for Kelley, who says you have to like people to create successful matches. Meeting with clients face to face and developing a rapport over time helps Kelley convey to her clients why she considers a particular member a good match for them. “I’m not a big corporation; I don’t have a lot of people to answer to, aside from my clients,” said Kelley. She serves a niche clientele — single professionals who are 35 years and older, residing in the Triangle, and are actively seeking a romantic relationship. Her clients submit to background checks and are contractually obligated to update their relationship status when they are no longer single. For effective matchmaking, Kelley assesses three components: an individual’s value system, personality type and personal preferences. She also actively listens to feedback so she understands her client as completely as possible. “There are seven billion people on the planet, and the right person is going to be there,” she says. “You just have to be patient and strategic.” t

WHERE SOME RESTAURATEURS might see subur-
bia, Corbett and Julie Monica see community. Owners of Raleigh’s long-standing Italian trattoria Bella Monica Cucina & Vino, the Monicas opened their second eatery, Stellino’s Italiano, in May at Parkside Town Commons, putting their local footprint down amid big-box stores, boutiques and chain restaurants. “A lot of my peers are opening restaurants downtown, but we’re suburban parents, and I just didn’t see myself in that mix,” said Corbett, head chef at the two establishments. “It made sense to look into shopping centers like this and try to go to the root of being a business of and for the neighborhood.” The community response has been resoundingly positive, capped off with Stellino’s winning Cary Magazine’s Maggy Award for Best New Restaurant less than six months after opening. “It’s an honor to be appreciated and to have the opportunity to feed people — to feed their bellies and to feed their soul,” said Corbett. He grew up eating and working in his Nana’s New Jersey restaurant where she cooked traditional Neapolitan continued on page 79

dishes from her family’s heritage in Italy. This early passion for food continued with a career in restaurants, culminating with the opening of Bella Monica in 2000. “It afforded me a good perspective of both sides of the cooking line — what goes on in the kitchen as well as what goes on in the dining room,” Corbett said. “We want the service to be our differentiator. We focus on being hospitable and treating people like family.” Family pervades all aspects of Stellino’s, starting with the menu of traditional Italian favorites like meat lasagna and baked ziti inspired by Corbett’s Nana’s original recipes. “I don’t have many ingredients. Simple makes more sense,” said Corbett. “But I do like large and in-charge flavors.” Chicken Parmigiana, Veal Bolognese and Mom’s Meatballs & Gravy are hearty and comforting dishes that have been perfected as they’ve passed through generations of family cooking. Thin-crust pizzas stand out with fresh, unique combinations of toppings, such as
clams and pancetta, and anchovies and capers. The pizza dough is made with imported Italian flour and fermented for 48 hours, creating a light and crispy final product. “A lot of ideas come from outside experiences. Lately I’ve been trying to emulate the food that we have experienced in Italy in our travels,” said Corbett, who balances the menu’s classic staples with modern dishes and flavor pairings. Bruschetta is a time-tested appetizer, but don’t expect only fresh tomato and garlic on a crostini. Cannellini beans with pecorino Romano, sundried tomato with walnut, and blue crab with garlic bruschetta showcase unique flavors in familiar ways. Likewise, pesto made with peppery arugula, instead of the usual basil, dresses a shrimp and fusilli pasta entree that highlights current and classic Italian flavors. In the same way the menu combines modern and traditional elements, the restaurant’s interior fuses new and old. “I wanted to make it a bit of yin and yang,” said Corbett.

Samreen Nawaz and her husband Syed Yousuf opened Kababish Café in 2015 and have built a strong fan base in the community, winning the Maggy Award for Best Indian Restaurant in 2018 and an honorable mention in the same category in 2017. The two are natives of Pakistan, by way of New York and Maryland, and their restaurant menu of “kababs and more” reflects those cosmopolitan tastes.

Y: Haleem — this is my favorite, I enjoy it every time I can eat it. I never get bored with it. And chicken biryani and chicken bihari kabab. Those three things. N: He took my dish. Haleem has been my favorite dish since I was a kid. It’s a thick, hearty soup with shredded chicken and lentils. It’s my favorite dish, so we’re going to have it on the menu!
N: We went on the Internet, and typed in, “What are the best places to live in the United States?” and it came up — Cary, N.C. — voted by Forbes, Fortune and Money magazines. We came, looked at it, bought the house and here we are after 11 years.
What makes Kababish stand out? N: On our logo it says, “Happy, healthy eating.” We want you to be happy, but also to be healthy … People recognize that if there’s an allergy or dietary restriction, they can come to Kababish. We can take care of you. If you look at our menu, we have a full selection of vegetarian dishes with okra, eggplant, spinach, lentils and chickpeas — all fresh, not frozen.

This Polly Is a Cracker “Unusual,” “strange,” “Martian,” “plastic” — these are the comments typically made about an eye-catching, striking houseplant that goes by the name of ‘Polly,’ with no reference to a parrot intended. ‘Polly’ is a tropical alocasia that found its attractive way into American homes starting back the 1950s. And just how pretty is ‘Polly?’ Well, she is quite a visual cracker with long, arrowhead-shaped leaves so shiny they look like wax. Running through these indented, deep-emerald leaves are large, bright veins that strike like lime-green lightning bolts. That’s crackin’. Although ‘Polly’ is an alocasia, it refuses to stick to the script. Alocasias, along with colocasias, are often interchangeably called “elephant ears” in reference, of course, to their leaf shape and large size. However, ‘Polly’ rarely reaches above 2 feet tall, making it an ideal, tame houseplant for many indoor settings. A good location for ‘Polly’ is a room brightly washed in natural light. Just be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight — the harsh rays could singe the foliage. Avoid spots close to vents as well because the dry air can also scrunch up the leaves. Being from the tropics, this alocasia likes medium to high humidity. In the controlled environment of a house, such a requirement can be partially met by setting the pot on top of a pebble tray that is watered often. Misting the leaves occasionally will also help, but use either rain or distilled water because some chemicals in treated city water can cause spotting on the leaves. In the winter, ‘Polly’ will sense the shorter days and rest, so hold back on fertilizer and only water when the upper half-inch of pot soil is dry to the touch. This plant might even go dormant, losing its leaves and sending owners into a panic as to why they killed it. Have patience; wait until late winter to put ‘Polly’ back on a regular watering schedule with diluted fertilizer added at least once a month, and watch new leaves emerge to greet the young spring. ‘Polly’ can be given a vacation outdoors starting in the late spring and continuing until the end of summer. Just remember to 104

Not the case with this cutie — I have spotted it often in the houseplant sections of big box stores all over Cary, and it is a popular pretty with many online retailers. L.A. 2017 WOMEN OF WESTERN WAKE LUNCHEON

FIVE ACCOMPLISHED WOMEN were honored at the 10th annual Cary Magazine Women of Western Wake Luncheon, held Oct. 27 at The Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary. The women spoke of individual risk and life choices, and the importance of collective impact on solving problems. “All of this knitting together an incredible tapestry here in our community, that’s what’s going to break the cycle of violence in our community,” said Leigh Duque, executive director of InterAct of Wake County, which provides support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. 108

“It’s going to be a collective impact,” said Duque, “all of us working together that will achieve that end result.” Duque and the other honorees — Nicole Dozier, director of Health Advocacy Project-North Carolina Justice Center and Mayor Pro-Tempore of Apex Town Council; Dr. Gayle Greene, executive vice president of Wake Technical Community College; Fara Palumbo, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina; and Missy Vatinet, co-founder and owner of La Farm Bakery — participated in a panel discussion
which allowed each woman to reaffirm her commitment to community and reiterate her level of engagement. Elizabeth Gardner, WRAL-TV meteorologist, moderated the discussion. Building on the idea of collective impact, Palumbo challenged the employers in the room to provide jobs. The next step, she said, is to give individuals who have worked to bring order to their lives a chance to improve their circumstances. “We as employers really need to reach in and say we are willing and able to make a difference for these people; otherwise the
cycle will not break,” she said. Good health care is also vital to helping lift people out of poverty, said Dozier. Treating the mind and the body increases the individual’s ability to contribute to society as a whole person. “We don’t tell people to stop having heart attacks,” she said. “We do tell people to stop being depressed.” Greene told guests that she and her team at Wake Tech have a responsibility to expand the middle class. This is done by “closing the skills gap,” she said. Partnerships with North Carolina schools, universities and businesses help the community college know what skills will be needed in the future so it can provide the right instruction. And classes aren’t just for recent high school graduates. Education for individuals is a lifetime endeavor, she says, and the process is long-term. “We are incredibly fortunate in this region because we are becoming more affluent all the time,” said Greene. “It is my great hope that as we become more affluent, we’ll bring all of our citizens along with us and not leave anybody behind.”
As an example of lifelong learning and growth, philanthropist and entrepreneur Sheila Ogle was awarded the first Women of Western Wake Lifetime Achievement Award. “For once in my life, I’m speechless,” said the astonished Ogle. The honorees left their audience with the idea of perseverance. Making an impact in the community often starts with taking a risk, said Duque.
