The Way Back Machine wasn’t available, so Amber and Nancy decided to virtually revisit last summer. We Jonathan Fredin

hope you enjoy one of our favorite photos, taken for the August 2016 issue.

A PICTURE may be worth a thousand words, but we still do a lot of writing here at Cary Magazine. For this issue we let the photographs do the talking. We pull out some old favorites, including our editors’ photo from August 2016, and chief photographer Jonathan Fredin invites you to take a look at some photos from past articles that haven’t appeared in the magazine. He also takes the lead in our story about working farms in Cary and Apex, beginning on page 16. It would have taken many paragraphs to describe the rapid encroachment of development on these pockets of agriculture, but with a few photos Fredin captures the story’s essence. Readers join in for our pictorial issue, too. Thanks to everyone who submitted photos of their pets. We had a great time looking at all the cute photos, and we hope you will enjoy them as well. I also hope this issue marks the beginning of a picture perfect summer. All the best,

Amber Keister Editor 10

JUNE 2017

WELCOME to our June issue! We’ve added this ninth issue for 2017 with you in mind, to serve as a reprieve from the busy, busy month of May and as the kickoff to a glorious summer. You’ll see that we’ve taken a slightly different approach to these pages, as an opportunity to show off more than our usual share of gorgeous all-local visuals. Like horses, and barns that you probably drive by without noticing in our hustle-and-hurry world. Oh and cats, as we unveil our reader-submitted Summer Pet Parade. Our Garden Adventurer L.A. Jackson is in the spirit too, delivering a bouquet of creamy white blooms to die for. And in keeping with the photo-snapping theme, check out our feature on the DIY world of Instagram. Unofficially, I call this one the Take a Look issue. That’s short for Pour Some Iced Tea, Sit on the Back Porch, Kick Off Your Flip-Flops and Take a Look. Take a deep breath too. It’s even OK to sigh. Thanks for reading,

Nancy Pardue Editor

“Cary Magazine was gracious enough to follow CORRAL’s Forever Home capital campaign last year, which resulted in the community pulling together to raise $1 million in just three months to purchase CORRAL’s 10-acre farm. This amazing feat came to be known as the Million Dollar Miracle. Today, almost exactly one year later, CORRAL is thrilled to announce that it has officially closed on its farm and is now the proud and grateful owner of its Forever Home on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary. The closing enables CORRAL to continue providing hope and healing to hurting girls and young women for decades to come. “I am so grateful to each of you and the Town of Cary for walking this journey with us. OWNERS OF FAMILY FARMS NAVIGATE A PATH BETWEEN SENTIMENT AND ECONOMICS WRITTEN BY AMBER KEISTER PHOTOGRAPHED BY JONATHAN FREDIN

16

JUNE 2017

I

n Western Wake County, farmland is disappearing quickly. Only a few agricultural islands remain, their owners hanging on through a combination of innovation and nostalgic stubbornness. “It wouldn’t seem right if this land was being used for another purpose,” said William Upchurch, whose family has farmed in the area since the Civil War. “When you’re raised up on a farm, aggravating as it is to mow grass and work the land on hot days, every blade of grass has a meaning. Because there’s a memory here.”

Tobacco used to be king on the area’s small farms. But when the market shifted in the late 1990s, many scrambled to find a crop that would be as profitable as the golden leaf. Agritourism — corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and you-pick strawberries — has enabled families with deep roots in the community to continue to make a living from the land. But it’s not a panacea. Between the hard work and fickle weather of farming, it’s tempting to sell the land to developers offering upwards of $100,000 per acre.

“Here, the only alternative to farming is bricks. You’re either going to farm horizontal or you’re going to farm vertical,” says David Ferrell. He plans to sell his 80 acres on Morrisville Carpenter Road that are adjacent to Cary’s Legacy at Carpenter Village subdivision to the west, and Morrisville’s Wexford subdivision to the north. His daughter’s pet goats will be relocated to another farm in Chatham County.

Billy Upchurch mows his grass with a McCormick Farmall Cub, still running fine after more than 60 years. “We never throw anything away. Every resource, every piece of farm equipment can be repaired and used again,” says his son, William Upchurch.

Upchurch Farm Carpenter Upchurch Road, Cary Billy Upchurch, 91, and his wife, Doris Jean, live in an antiques-filled home that Billy’s father built in 1934. Even after a lifetime on the farm, he is matter-of-fact about its future. “You try to do something that gives you economic return,” he said. “We all lost tobacco, the tobacco program. That’s why we switched to agritourism, strawberries, and things like that. “This whole area is going to be developed someday. It’s just change.” Upchurch’s son William hopes to forestall that change as long as he can. He partners with another farmer, Milton Ganyard, to grow pumpkins and manage an agritourism business at the farm. The family also leases much of its 165-acre property to other farmers, and grows a few crops like cotton, sorghum and hay. 18

JUNE 2017

William Upchurch, his son Will, 13, and his father Billy walk the family farm. In the background are two of several tobacco barns on the property dating from the late 1800s.

William also works full time as executive director of the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, which assists farmers and businesses impacted by the downturn of the tobacco market. He enjoys spending his spare time with the kids who come out to the farm.

“I think people enjoy it too,” he said. “They enjoy still having open space and something going on out there that’s not typical of the congested urban areas. I feel that we give something back to the community in our own little way.” continued on page 21

The Upchurch farm is in the Carpenter community, not in Cary, Apex or Morrisville, despite having had mailing addresses in each of those towns. “I’ve lived in three towns and never left the farm,” jokes Billy Upchurch.

William Upchurch says he has the best of both worlds. He can make a quick run to the grocery store, and he can wake up in the morning and not see another person as he feeds his pet goats and miniature horses.

“My daddy died in ’96, and he grew up farming with horses and mules,” says David Ferrell, whose family has farmed in Western Wake for generations. “In his later years, that was his hobby. He loved mules, because he’d worked with them all his life. Daddy always said he made his living looking at the south end of a northbound mule.” Bell the mule watches cars go past on Louis Stephens Road.

Ferrell plans to sell the 80 acres along Morrisville Carpenter Road and relocate Green Acres Farm to Chatham County.

“As long as I’m living, I’ll be doing some type of farming. It’s kind of in your blood, but it’s not a mainstay like it used to be.” David Ferrell, Green Acres Farm continued from page 18

Green Acres Farm

— at —

Morrisville Carpenter Road, Cary For years the picturesque Green Acres Farm has been a popular fall destination, to pick pumpkins, navigate a corn maze, or hop on a hayride. “For that piece of land, the agritourism is the mainstay,” said David Ferrell of the farm his great-grandparents established in 1898. “Our clientele is on all four sides of us. We probably draw people from a 60to 80-mile radius.” The farm’s prime location has also attracted developers. Included in Cary’s Carpenter Village planned development district since the mid-1990s, the 80-acre property is less than five minutes from busy Davis Drive. It’s also adjacent to Cary’s Legacy at Carpenter Village subdivision to the west, and Morrisville’s Wexford subdivision to the north. Saying it’s a good time to sell, Ferrell plans to relocate Green Acres Farm in 2018 to a larger location in Chatham County. Though there won’t be a corn maze at the Morrisville Carpenter location this fall, pumpkins and Christmas trees will still be sold there. “I know there’s a time coming that we won’t be here,” said Ferrell. “You’ve got to face the facts that it’s a business decision, just like everything is.” But he won’t be leaving the area completely. Ferrell says he will hold onto a 17acre lot across Louis Stephens Road, where he keeps a donkey named Jenny and a mule named Bell.

“It’s an advantage to have the farm around the houses,” says Darin Jones of DJ’s Berry Patch. “But if it keeps going the way it’s going, there’s not going to be any farmland left anywhere.” continued from page 21

DJ’s Berry Patch Salem Church Road, Apex Darin Jones’ family has farmed in Wake County for more than 100 years, but he and his wife, Jessica, have run DJ’s only since spring 2010. They lease the berry patch’s six acres in Apex from Don Sorrell, who at one time tended 50 acres of tobacco, raised chickens and worked full-time as a mail carrier. Sorrell is 81 now, and unable to farm the 23-acre property he bought in 1966, so the Jones’ berry operation keeps the land designated as agricultural, maintaining Sorrell’s tax breaks. If the land were taxed at the higher residential rate, he’d likely have to move. “They’re mighty sweet people, and I’m fortunate to have them,” Sorrell said. “I’d have to sell it, if it weren’t for them being here. The regular taxes are so high, I couldn’t pay it; ain’t no way I could pay it.” The berry patch also brings thousands 22

of visitors every spring, so many that the Joneses expect to plant another strawberry field this fall. “When we first started, we knew the pick-your-own was popular, but we didn’t realize that there was just going to be such a demand for it,” said Jessica. “Each year it gets more popular.” Darin admits that it’s good for business

to be so close to housing developments. But while his customers are close, the suburban creep is worrisome too. “If you don’t own it, you’ve got to find something you can rent that doesn’t have houses, and the money’s a whole lot better for growing houses than it is growing vegetables,” he said. continued on page 27

“It’s like a getaway. When you come out here, it’s beautiful. It works for people; they don’t have to go far.” Michael Phillips, Phillips Farms continued from page 22

Phillips Farms Good Hope Church Road, Cary You might call Michael Phillips a farmer, but really he’s in the entertainment business. His father, Lee, bought their farm property in 1976 and grew mostly tobacco until 1998. Now agritourism is its major source of income. The younger Phillips manages that side of the business, taking care of the thousands of visitors who come out each spring for strawberries, and each fall for pumpkins and the corn maze. “I really like to see the kids be able to get out and run,” Phillips said. “We have an advantage being where we are. You don’t have to go far, and kids can come out here and get worn out.” Fun at the Phillips farm is a yearround enterprise, with lots of ag-related family activities including a large play area, a bounce pillow, tractor pedal cars, a hay ride, and baby goats. The farm is close to urban areas, but has the feel of being out in the country. Standing in his driveway, Phillips says the only houses he sees are those owned by his family. And unlike some other area farmers, he doesn’t foresee that changing anytime soon. “It’s fun to see things grow, and see your business grow,” said Phillips. “Working on your own time, that’s why I love it, not being cooped up in an office each day.” t CARY MAGAZINE 27

ure, they’re snuggly … but that’s just the beginning. When’s the last time you met a dog with his own bubble machine? Or a ferret with an Instagram account? Well, today’s the day! We asked to meet your pets, and you truly delivered. Not since Lassie and Mr. Ed have we encountered such a bunch of funny, amazing and inspiring animals. Now it’s our turn to share. Here’s to warm fuzzies. More of your pet photos on the following pages →

22, his experience has shaped him into the ‘once in a lifetime’ horse all equestrians seek. Despite his age, he is spry! He will give 110 percent, always. He can read his rider’s thoughts and feelings, and he’s exceptionally careful with children and beginner riders. He’s got boxes of ribbons and trophies that prove how amazing he is, but the folks at Friendship Stables don’t need those to know he’s special. He is worth his weight in gold — but he’ll take it in carrots!” — Melanie Svinis of Apex

Aria, age 4 saves lives by donating blood to the “Aria

Punkin, age 4 , Zuchon “Punkin is my 18-pound Zuchon, a Shih Tzu-Bishon Frise hybrid. I rescued her from a pet store at 10 weeks old; she had been separated from her mother at eight weeks and flown from Kansas to North Carolina. Punkin is my absolute joy, and we are a pack. At 53 years old, I was a first-time pet owner. My final living parent had just passed. I

needed Punkin to jumpstart my life, and she needed me to save and love her. We grew up together, learn together, love together.” — Joann Langan of Cary

Sheldon, age 3 “Sheldon is a rescue dog. He has already fostered

nearly 200

puppies for Peak Lab Rescue while they wait to find their permanent homes. With the youngest orphaned puppies, Sheldon offers warmth and security. He is always willing to share his bed and allows itty-bitty pups to find comfort by snuggling up next to him for a nap. When the pups are a little older, Sheldon gets down on their level to play. He is gentle but firm in teaching the lessons that a puppy needs to become a successful member of a family. Sheldon shows his foster pups the proper way to use their mouth, play, share and respect personal space. I have personally seen Sheldon use his big bony head to hold a puppy still just long enough to get his point across. And I’ve seen him bring a dog toy to a puppy and say, ‘Here, chew on this — not me!’ “People often ask me how I taught Sheldon to do this. The answer is I didn’t. I truly believe that he knows he came from a bad situation and that now he has it pretty good. His mission is to help other puppies learn and grow and live happily ever after, just like him.” — Sharon Gesser of Cary

Fergus, age 2 ½ “Fergus is one of the most unique pets I’ve ever had! He’s a fun and funny little ferret with a huge personality. He loves to play chase, go for walks with his favorite leash, snuggle with his humans, and dance about the house! He never ceases to brighten up my day. Fergus also has his own Instagram: @fergustheferret.” — Shelby Scattergood of Cary

SOMETHING FOR everyone — you’ve heard that line before. But when you hear it from the Western Wake Tennis Association, it’s true. Ask the McGrew family of Apex: Duncan and Nancy, and sons Grant, 18, and Owen, 16. They’ve been taking part in WWTA events for years. “The Western Wake Tennis Association is very good about promoting league and tournament play, both for advanced and relatively new players,” said Duncan McGrew, whose sons began playing tennis at ages 7 and 5. “And there are great opportunities to give back. It’s amazing how many activities

(the association) is supporting. “Our family got more involved as Grant entered high school. (WWTA) looks for assistance with a number of programs; for our boys, it’s nice to find a way to combine their interests with community service.” McGrew is right: From its Try Tennis program and innovative Find a Team guide, to the free Tennis for Life program serving breast cancer survivors, to adult tournaments and the Junior Team Tennis State Championships coming to Cary in July, the nonprofit WWTA serves up tennis for youth and adults of all skill levels, last year seeing 10,000 non-unique registrations.

RHONDA N. BLANCHARD MEMORIAL SHOOTOUT This second annual event honors the late Middle Creek High School tennis coach and special education teacher, and benefits the Abilities Tennis Association of NC, atanc.org, which supports tennis opportunities for those with intellectual disabilities. When: Saturday, Aug. 5, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Where: Kildaire Farms Racquet & Swim Club and Farmington Woods Tennis Courts, Cary More details: westernwaketennis. com/event/rhonda-blanchardmemorial-shootout-2017

Though it owns no courts, WWTA partners with five Western Wake towns and several private clubs on tennis programming. Beyond sport, WWTA uses tennis to connect our community by hosting and supporting fundraising tournaments benefiting the likes of Transitions LifeCare, raising more than $250,000 over the past 10 years; the Alzheimer’s Association; and Abilities Tennis Association of North Carolina. “Tennis is such a social sport, and you can play from age 5 to 95,” said Laura Weygandt, executive director of WWTA. “Our board also sees tennis as a vehicle to do good things in the community. All of us at WWTA are very passionate about our mission.” Weygandt’s journey with WWTA began as a volunteer for such charity events, after she began playing tennis at age 41 just for fun. In 2016, WWTA earned the prestigious Community Tennis Association of the Year award, selected from among more than 900 CTAs across the nation. “We run U.S. Tennis Association leagues and tournaments as our source of revenue, and then we run or support others’ events with volunteers and promotion,” Weygandt explained. “We never say no when somebody has an idea for a tennis event to benefit the community.” That was true for the McGrews, who

10 Reasons to Play Tennis → Burns calories → Improves flexibility and balance → Increases bone density and strength → Helps manage stress → Builds problem-solving skills → Develops teamwork and social skills → Improves self-image → Is a family sport → For youth, less prone to risky behaviors → Is a lifetime sport

Jerry Passer plays tennis at Cary Tennis Park. “Tennis is such a social sport, and you can play from age 5 to 95,” said Laura Weygandt, executive director of WWTA.

approached Weygandt about launching an event to honor late Middle Creek High teacher and tennis coach Rhonda Blanchard. “Laura encouraged us, and introduced us to Lou Welch, the executive director of Abilities Tennis of NC,” McGrew said. “We didn’t know that Rhonda had already been in touch with Lou to get her (special needs) students involved in Abilities Tennis. When we learned that, it really gave us the incentive.” The inaugural Rhonda N. Blanchard Memorial Shootout netted more than $700, enough for Abilities Tennis to fund a full event. McGrew credits community support, including donations from the Cary MacGregor Rotary Club, for that success. This year’s shootout will take place on Aug. 5.

In addition to taking part in its leagues and tournaments, Weygandt says the public can help further the efforts of the WWTA by volunteering. “Spring and fall, we need about 30 volunteers per week for Abilities tennis, and other volunteers are needed for events we do all over the area,” she said. “We will need 60plus volunteers for the JTT State Championships (July 16-18); we have more than 500 kids coming!” Volunteers and donations are also needed for the annual Charity Tennis Classic, held in September, which benefits Transitions LifeCare and WWTA scholarships. And as local towns add more courts to meet the growth of tennis in our community,

Weygandt adds that there is a need for additional tennis pros. “Tennis is the game of a lifetime — that sounds cliché, but it really is,” said McGrew. “We played family doubles when the children were younger, then parents versus the boys. Now they’re too good! I’m confident my kids will play into adulthood. “There’s the community service perspective, and tennis is a great way to get exercise. In this part of the country you can play yearround. It’s not a big time commitment, and it’s a great way to expand your social network, to meet people who share your interests.” t For more information on the Western Wake Tennis Association, see westernwaketennis.com.

Moonvine is related to the morning glory, with flowers that open in late afternoon.

garden adventurer WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY L.A. JACKSON

The Way of White WHITE IS THE ESSENCE of light.

Don’t think so? Bring all the colors there are together, and white will be the result. It is a constant that holds the wide spectrum of colors subject to their natural origin. Any simple experiment with a prism on a sunny day will prove this is so. White holds a centric place with flowering plants as well. When blooms of sizzling red, fiery orange, bright blue, blushing pink and dusky purple threaten to spin the landscape into a dizzying visual cacophony, white flowers serve as cooling pools of transition to settle the scenery into a calmer state because, by their very nature, these blossoms of the lightest shades of pale soothe. So even in the growing glory that is the garden, white remains the light that binds. L.A. Jackson is the former editor of Carolina Gardener Magazine. Want to ask L.A. a question about your garden?
