IT’S EASY TO BECOME discouraged with all that’s happening right now: the lingering threat of the coronavirus, economic hardship and intractable political divisions. But as there are lots of disappointing stories in the media, there is also much to be hopeful about. In early June, I spoke with 18-year-old Ella Green, who, with her pal Michael Shorb, organized a chalk art demonstration in downtown Cary supporting Black Lives Matter. It was inspiring to see the display of solidarity among the teens and their friends, Cary police officers, and members of the community. (The article about Ella and Michael is at carymagazine.com.) That same week, I sat down with our Movers & Shakers for in-person, on-camera interviews. It seemed like these conversations were just what I needed to lift my spirits. How could I be glum after hearing stories like these?
• Andrew George, owner of Aqua Tots Cary, described teaching kids from The Carying Place how to swim. • Alyssa Campo, manager of the culinary farm at The Umstead Hotel and Spa, spoke of her plans to open a teaching farm where children can learn about growing healthy food. • Scott Quilty, founder of the Fuquay-Varina Angel Fund, talked about getting financial aid to small businesses hit hard by the coronavirus shut-down.
While I wish every one of you could have the chance to chat with our Movers & Shakers, that won’t be possible for a while. I invite you to check out excerpts from these video conversations, which will appear online, with a new video every day throughout July. I hope these folks and their stories will lift your spirits. I also hope their compassion for others and their dedication to serve this community will inspire you to act in similar ways. Thank you for reading,

At a Crossroads Owners contemplate future of historic Carpenter Farm Supply Company WRITTEN BY AMBER KEISTER PHOTOGRAPHED BY JONATHAN FREDIN
WALKING THROUGH THE DOORS of the Carpenter Farm Supply Company feels like a step back in time. Signs advertising long-gone farm products hang on the walls, tiny glass bottles of Coca-Cola rest in crates, and regulars gather around the wood stove to swap tall tales. 18 JULY 2020
Much remains the same from when the store was established in 1885, including the family that owns it. But this store isn’t a museum; it’s a business. “We’re open every morning at eight o’clock except Sunday. And I mean, this
Sunset settles on the facade of Carpenter Farm Supply Company. William Henry Carpenter, the current owners’ great-grandfather, founded the store in 1885. Ten years later, in 1895, he moved the store to its current location, at the corner of Morrisville Carpenter and Carpenter Upchurch roads in Cary, to be close to the railroad crossing. The store continues to welcome customers every day except Sunday.
old historic framework is housing a business that lives and breathes every day. It’s our hope that we can keep it breathing for a long time,” said Dale Carpenter, who owns the store with his brother Joel, and expects his son, Dale Jr., to take over from him one day.
Rooted in Cary’s agricultural past, the store has evolved over the years to meet the needs of its changing clientele. Now in its second century, the store and its owners are facing a major change happening right outside their doors. continued on page 20

A unique place
In the last 20 years, the store has shifted from catering to tobacco farmers to keeping suburban homeowners supplied with bedding plants and gardening equipment. For owners of pot-bellied pigs or backyard fowl, Carpenter Farm Supply is the place to stock up on supplies. “Our main thing that no one else has is our livestock feed,” said Dale Carpenter Jr., explaining that feed and equipment for urban chickens are some of their topselling items. The store will also order whatever a customer wants, he says, from cilantro seed to earthworm chow. “We try to offer person-to-person help,” said Dale Carpenter. “Newcomers that are not used to our soil types and our weather patterns, they will always ask you about planting procedures, fertilization, tending to their yards and their garden.” Whether from another part of the country or another part of the world, customers benefit from the Carpenter family’s deep knowledge of what it takes to grow things here. They will also share tips on plumbing, electrical work and chainsaw repairs. “There’s a personable, human contact, not just what you get from a small business — a family owned small business — but from a business that’s been in your community long before you were,” said Lori Bush, a member of the Cary Town Council and a store patron. “I’m often surprised at how many people don’t know about Carpenter Farm Supply and its unique place, not just in our history, but in our community.” Some history

The second floor once housed a barbershop, says Dale Carpenter, but now serves as storage. RIGHT: Dale Carpenter, right, makes a key for longtime friend and neighbor Lee Phillips, owner of the original Carpenter home and a regular visitor to the store. “If I don’t see Lee every day, there’s a problem,” Carpenter says.
The feed and fertilizer storage building across the street was built in 1880, and originally served the community as a farmer’s cooperative and meeting hall. A garage, warehouse and front porch were added in the 1950s.

Dale Carpenter, who owns the store with his brother Joel, has been working there since he was 9 or 10 years old. “He runs the store in a way that no one else can, and that includes me. His inventory is all up here,” says his son, Dale Jr., tapping his head.

Dale Carpenter Jr. and his brother-in-law, Jordan Green, stock the Carpenter warehouse with livestock feed. From chicken scratch to earthworm chow, the store can get whatever the customer wants.
You had to make sure you had the correct bottles in the correct crates for the vendors when they would come to get them. That was one of my jobs.” He took over the running of the store in 1982, when he left college. His brother Joel came on board when he graduated a few years later. In 2000, the Carpenter Historic District was entered into the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service. Along with the Carpenter Farm Supply Company and its warehouse across the street, the historic district includes roughly two dozen buildings on a few hundred acres surrounding the intersection of Carpenter Upchurch and Morrisville Carpenter roads. “The town of Cary was a farming community for the longest time, and the business of that farming community, a lot of it took place around that Carpenter Farm Supply store,” said Jennifer Robinson, a Cary Town Council member. continued on page 25

Weathered and rusting advertisements from a by-gone era are collectors’ items. “Never sold an antique,” says Dale Carpenter. “I’ve had people give me signs because they know they’re not going anywhere.” 24 JULY 2020
The railroad crossing in front of Carpenter Farm Supply on Morrisville Carpenter Road is scheduled to be closed in 2022, as part of a construction project to realign and widen Morrisville Carpenter Road.
“The town is going to close this intersection here, Morrisville Carpenter at the railroad. We’re really concerned, because that’s been the major artery for us for many, many years coming off of 55.”
— Joel Carpenter, co-owner

continued from page 22
“We were trying to figure out how we could make sure future generations would be able to see a glimpse of what Cary was in its original form.” Down the road
The town came up with the 2005 Carpenter Community Plan and a vision “to revitalize the Carpenter crossroads area as a lively, unique historical and cultural destination.” Vital to that plan is the current construction to realign and widen Morrisville Carpenter Road, linking it to Carpenter Fire Station Road. When the $36.2 million project is complete in 2022, Morrisville Carpenter Road will be a four-lane highway carrying drivers from west Cary all the way to the airport. By diverting through traffic, the town hopes to preserve the more rural feel of the historic district. And while Dale and Joel Carpenter appreciate the town’s efforts, they worry about plans to close the rail crossing in front of their store. “The town is going to close this intersection here, Morrisville Carpenter at the railroad,” said Joel Carpenter. “We’re really concerned, because that’s been the major artery for us for many, many years coming off of 55.”
Drivers on N.C. 55 will still be able to see the store from the road, but with the closing of the railroad crossing, the direct route to the business will disappear. The Town of Cary plans extensive signage directing people to the historic district and the Carpenter Farm Supply Company. Established clients will be able to get to the store, the owners say, but new customers might have more difficulty. And whether they’re in the market for chicken feed or a souvenir T-shirt, those folks need to find the store, or it won’t survive for another 100 years. “It’s a working business, but we’re also kind of a tourist attraction, too,” said Dale Carpenter Jr. “People from out of town — a lot of people like to come see this old store in the middle of suburban Cary.” t
Construction on Carpenter Fire Station Road will link it to Morrisville Carpenter Road by 2022, creating a four-lane highway from Amberly in west Cary all the way to the airport.

IT TAKES A SPECIAL PERSON to look beyond their personal success and ask how they can help others. This commitment to make a difference is what makes this year’s Cary Magazine Movers & Shakers stand out. That quality has been especially important this year, as our community has grappled with the coronavirus, business closings and other crises. Several of our honorees have restructured their business on a dime; others have launched fundraisers to help others. In the next few pages — and at carymagazine.com — we invite you to get to know these amazing individuals. Special thanks to Chatham Station for the venue. 110 N. Walker St., Cary

Colin Fegeley Alyssa Campo One Oak Farm at The Umstead Hotel and Spa AN INTRODUCTION: Imagine everything you might do for an at-home vegetable garden (and small orchard), then multiply that by almost three acres. As the culinary farm manager, I work with a great team to plan, plant and maintain over 150 varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. INSPIRATION: Getting in touch with nature on a different level has absolutely changed my gardening and farming methods. In the past, I used organic pesticides, but now I watch closely, as beneficial insects arrive to prey upon our pests. I may have also over-applied fertilizers, but now I am in tune with building and enriching the soil and attracting earthworms and microbes to create a healthier ecosystem that in turn feeds the plants. The beauty and forces Nature has already of nature inspire me answered many every day. problems we face as producers. MY CORE VALUES hinge upon sustainability, food security, and bringing people together over the enjoyment of food and nature. I literally get to do all of this every day.
Green Level High School INSPIRATION: I tell our students all the time how much I enjoy living vicariously through them. I tend to get very attached to our teams. Like our student athletes, I am very competitive and enjoy celebrating all of their The well-being and successes with them. happiness of our High school athletics student athletes is have the power to my primary focus....I teach incredible life want them to have the lessons through both best of everything and victory and defeat. I enjoy every moment love being a part of it. BIGGEST RISK: Leaving a very successful athletic program (Green Hope High School) to open a new school has been my greatest professional risk to date. While I was confident in my abilities to start a new program, I was certainly nervous about not meeting the high expectations I have set for myself. I am very proud of everything our student athletes and programs have accomplished in such a short time.
of their high school athletic careers.
FUN FACT: My wife and I love to travel; together, we’ve visited 39 countries. We always seem to be planning our next trip! CARY MAGAZINE 31
Andrew George, Aqua Tots AN INTRODUCTION: I have been a franchisee for eight years, and our partnership owns 10 locations in Raleigh, Charlotte and Atlanta. Cary was our first location! I've held every role — instructor, front desk team, aquatic manager, general manager — but currently my role is overseeing construction and development of new locations. GREATEST CHALLENGE: We had a contractor go belly up on us halfway through a project. I had to bail him out of jail in the hope that he would get back to work. I ended up having to take over the build-out as a contractor, which I had no experience in.
Dr. Cindy Johnson Peak City Veterinary Hospital INSPIRATION: I care deeply about all my patients and love connecting with their owners as well. I consider them family. ON SUCCESS: The most important lesson on success is that planning is a must. BIGGEST RISK: Opening the business on my own. ...To this day, I still am in awe of seeing “Peak City Veterinary Hospital” on the front of my building. CORE VALUES: I want my patients to get the best care that is provided with complete compassion for them. I also want to be part of the community and be able to give back, which is why I do a lot of work with rescues. Knowing I have been a part of the journey for an animal to be saved from the shelter to finding its new home, makes all the difference in the world to me.

Pretend & Criminal Conduct podcasts AN INTRODUCTION: My first podcast, Pretend, is about real people pretending to be someone else. I interview con artists and their victims. My new podcast, Criminal Conduct, is an 11-part investigation into the death of a Florida woman and the sleuth who was murdered while investigating her case.
Cary Town Council
Even though I no longer work in news, I still have the desire to tell people’s stories and to make a difference.
PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHT: I've been written about in the New York Times and the BBC World News. I could have never imagined that my podcast would be noticed worldwide. I've also won four Midsouth Regional Emmys for my previous work in broadcast television. BIGGEST RISK: I was invited to visit and interview a cult leader for my podcast Pretend. It was terrifying. GREATEST CHALLENGE: My biggest challenge is getting people to agree to talk with me — especially con artists. People who are deceptive are especially hard to convince. However, once I get them talking, I treat them with respect, and they appreciate that. Building trust allows them to discuss things about their lives they would normally keep secret.
AN INTRODUCTION: Ya Liu was elected last year as the town’s first AsianAmerican council member. She is also a Duke University School of Law faculty member and board member of the Chinese-American Friendship Association of North Carolina. INSPIRATION: I really enjoy working with people. There are so many volunteers in the (Chinese-American) organization, many of them are my friends, and we just enjoy working together on different projects. What we do, truly does make a difference in people's lives. During this pandemic, we were able to raise over $100,000 that enabled us to purchase PPEs (personal protective equipment) from China, and donate Every citizen with to the hospitals and a good heart to assisted living facilities, serve the community nursing homes and can run for public businesses in Cary.
office and make a difference.
BIGGEST RISK: Running for public office wasn't something I dreamed of or envisioned. It wasn't in my plan. So that was the biggest risk. At the end of the day, it was really worth it and was worth the fight. Now I have the opportunity to be on the Council, bringing a diverse perspective.

Lindsey Kaplowitz Starpath Dance Academy BIGGEST RISK: Other than leaving a secure job and opening our first location, we are now in the process of opening a larger, second location this August. There are always risks associated with expansion, but I am confident in our staff and the need for our programs in the area. GREATEST CHALLENGE: Currently the biggest challenge is being innovative while facing this pandemic and the obstacles that have come from not being able to physically be with our students in the studio. We are hosting all of our regularly scheduled classes virtually at their normal times, and have additional live virtual events each week, and a video library for our young students. While the pandemic has created challenges, it also has been an opportunity to strengthen our community and explore new teaching tools. Watching children

I'm not sure how we've kept up with that, but we somehow have. BIGGEST RISK: The gut feeling like something's gonna happen is always there, because it's farming. I started when I was 20 and got the loan (to start the corn maze) — never had a loan in my life… I was like, well it's gonna be seven weekends, but the good Lord and faith got me through that. The first three weekends were in my mind a failure, and then the next two weekends allowed me to pay back the loan.
Watching the happiness and joy on families’ faces at the farm when here keeps me going.
Aby Rao independent filmmaker PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHT: With minimal funding and limited formal education specific to the art of filmmaking, I completed my first feature film in less than three years. “Parallel Parking” was released in 2018. The film received recognition from several film festivals and was screened locally at the Cary Theater. It was truly gratifying to see years of hard work come to fruition. ABOUT THE MOVIE: “Parallel Parking” explores the unconventional relationship between a middle-aged Tibetan undocumented immigrant and a Dominican truck driver, who has his own emotional and mental challenges. (See the movie on Amazon Prime Video or at vimeo.com/ondemand/ parallelparking.)
Independent filmmaking ... gives you the freedom to tell stories that you are passionate about, without having to worry about financial outcomes.
INSPIRATION: I am fortunate to live in culturally-diverse Wake county, which I believe is also a microcosm of our multicultural nation. Given my passion for storytelling, and being an immigrant myself, I found my niche in narrating immigrant experiences set in the South. Immigration is a contentious topic. Even casual conversations can quickly get politicized, but what often gets lost in the shuffle are the personal journeys.
Sean Ryan Crosstown Pub INSPIRATION: Getting to interact with our staff and customers on a daily basis is big for me. We have a strong core group of regulars who keep us motivated to maintain a fun and inviting atmosphere. BIGGEST RISK: I would have to say opening Crosstown Pub in downtown Cary before the “big boom.” We were one of the first new establishments to open downtown in 2015, and believe it or not, people told us we were crazy for choosing it for our new location at the time.
Anyone who has worked with family knows it’s not all rainbows and butterflies, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.
CORE VALUES: I am very familyoriented and have the pleasure of working alongside my mom Sheila at Crosstown on a daily basis. My brother Brendan has recently joined us in the family business with Daybreak. We plan to open this summer, and we're excited to bring a good breakfast place into downtown Cary. FUN FACT: I played four years of college lacrosse, and I am a huge Carolina Hurricanes fan.

AN INTRODUCTION: De La Finca specializes in sourcing, importing and distribution of green coffee in the U.S. We import coffee from different countries with the goal of establishing a direct connection with U.S. consumers and coffee producers of the regions we source coffee from. I am the founder, coffee hunter and sales manager. BIGGEST RISK: Starting a coffee-importing business and a coffee warehouse without the proper finances and logistics. Many people did not think it would be possible.

Falling down, time and time again and finding a way to get back up, is the reason why I am who I am today.
GREATEST CHALLENGE: To establish a business relationship with coffee roasters that had been buying coffee for many years from traditional coffee traders, persuading them to give us an opportunity to work together, and earning their trust. INSPIRATION: The ability to create an impact in the communities where the coffee is sourced from. STRANGE BUT TRUE: I am terrible at making my own coffee.
We source only ethically grown coffee with environmental agriculture practices. We do business with roasters that share the same values and care for the coffee communities we work with.

GREATEST CHALLENGE: Being sick for three years prior to being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease was really tough. Finally being diagnosed at UNC Hospital was bittersweet. I am especially proud of the team I lead. ...We are like a family — we seek to help each other and we desire to accomplish great things together.
GREATEST CHALLENGE: I have been involved with promoting personal resilience in our community by addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) for over three years. For the past two years, I’ve been involved with a group of Cary staff, as well as some community members, that has a goal to create a Community of Care. A Community of Care takes into consideration how trauma affects a person’s life, and it seeks to introduce resiliencebuilding practices to help a person overcome trauma. The subject of ACEs is a sensitive one, and that is part of the challenge. Our work is just beginning, but we have already accomplished much by increasing awareness to ACEs and implementing resiliencebuilding practices in Town of Cary camps and programs.

AN INTRODUCTION: I am an elected officer at American Legion Post 116 in FuquayVarina. We had over 150 boys and girls participate last year in Scouting, baseball, softball, shooting sports, and our annual oratorical competition. As far as my day job, I cofounded a company called MedScribes. We hire pre-med students and train them to take notes for doctors. PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHT: In February, most of our scribes documented for physicians in person. By mid-March, we completely adapted our model, and moved 85% of the company to virtual support. It was as if we were a ship, sailing through the waves, and someone told us, “No, you need to be a submarine.” So we became a submarine. While my company was transforming itself, I launched the Fuquay-Varina Angel Fund. I recognized that state and federal aid would be slow in coming, so in the latter half of March we raised $121,000 and distributed it on April 1 as grants to 57 brick-andmortar small businesses in Fuquay-Varina.

Feel the Need for Speed?
Jack Ryan, a Rush Hour Karting staff member, demonstrates how fast the karts can go around the indoor track. The gas-powered vehicles can reach speeds up to 40 miles per hour.

peed, adrenaline, competitive, fun. Ask drivers getting out of the karts at Rush Hour Karting about their experience motoring around a winding 0.3-mile indoor track at speeds up to 40 miles per hour, and any or all of those words are sure to be used in response. A few days after Rush Hour Karting resumed business during phase one of North Carolina’s coronavirus reopening plan, Cris Cooper, 20, of Zebulon, was among those ready to return to a routine. “Oh man, I’ve missed this place,” said Cooper, who had vowed before the pandemicinduced sheltering-in-place to visit at least once a month. “Racing cars is just fun to me. I am not sure there’s a good way to explain it.”

JULY 2020
This is not a typical summer for North Carolinians, thanks to COVID-19 restrictions. The recreational options for families looking for fun have become limited. Rush Hour Karting, which opened in 2005 and is located just off Interstate-40 in Garner, emerges as a natural and viable option. “Unlike some entertainment venues like movie theaters or bowling alleys, where you’re actually in groups together and in close proximity, here you’re in a go-kart and 6 feet apart at all times,” owner Adam Saad said. “Plus you have your own head sock, helmet and neck brace, so you’re completely covered. It’s nice to have an entertainment venue that in its nature promotes social distancing.”

While closed for six weeks during the pandemic, Rush Hour Karting went through a transformation “by deep-cleaning the entire track, completely remodeling the lobby so that it was more open and customers could feel more comfortable,” Saad said. He estimates spending nearly $20,000 to remodel and purchase improved cleaning and disinfecting equipment. Rush Hour Karting bills itself as “serious adult fun” because, according to Saad, kids tend to spread the word amongst themselves regardless of advertising. “We basically had to re-educate people on the karting business,” he said. “Many people associate carting with kiddie carting, which is spelled with a ‘C.’ This business is with a ‘K.’”
Go-kart drivers can be six feet apart and still have fun competing against each other.
So, what’s the difference? The more prevalent carts — with a “C” — are typically associated with amusement parks. They don’t require helmets and generally reach a maximum of 12 miles per hour. Karts are considered an entryway into motor racing. Thus, there are greater safety restrictions, such as helmets. Junior drivers must be a minimum of 8 years old and at least 48 inches tall. Adult drivers must be a minimum of 15 years old. The karts at Rush Hour are gas-powered and have Honda 6.5 horsepower engines (think lawnmower as a comparison). In the past 15 years, electric karts have become more commonplace. They tend to

accelerate faster and can be controlled remotely, making them more appealing for customer safety. “In Asia and Europe karting is huge,” said Saad, noting that there are only a few karting tracks in North Carolina. The others are located around Charlotte, long considered the hub for NASCAR. “When we started, we thought this concept would be an ideal for team building, especially considering all of the companies and three major universities located in the Triangle.” The facility offers amenities such as axthrowing and video games, a tavern, and a conference room to accommodate company

outings. The venue also does its share of hosting youth birthday parties and offers weeklong summer camps throughout the summer. As a result of the high percentage of corporate business, Saad plans to open a second Rush Hour Karting facility at the Wake Competition Center in Morrisville. Originally scheduled to open in October, delays caused by the pandemic may push the opening to early 2021. The new facility will include a slightly longer multi-level track, electric karts and a 300-person conference room. Ultimately, the draw of Rush Hour Karting is all about the racing. In NASCAR, there’s an adage that if you’re not rubbin’, you’re not racin’. While bumping is prohibited at Rush Hour, it does not decrease the intensity. “I’ve driven bumper cars and other smaller carts, but they’re nothing like this,” said Zach Forbis, 17, of Chapel Hill, who had just come off the track with his two siblings. “The appeal is going fast … competitiveness.” While taking the checkered flag is the ultimate proof of finish, a large television screen overlooking the track displays the drivers’ lap times. A typical race lasts 8 minutes, and the more skilled drivers can navigate the 13-turn course in roughly 30 seconds. Cooper introduced his friend Jordan Love, 20, of Wake Forest, to karting about a year ago. Love admits that he is not as skilled as Cooper — as the lap times would attest — but the more laps he logs, the most addictive the sport gets. “It’s certainly better than sitting around all day,” Love said. t
Each rider gets their own helmet, head sock and neck brace. Between customers, all the equipment is cleaned and sanitized, says owner Adam Saad.

MANY FACTORS CONTRIBUTE to the creation of a nonprofit organization, be it an idea, a call to service or simply seeing a need in the community. For Kidznotes, which connects children with music, it was a television show. In August 2008, CBS’ “60 Minutes” aired a segment on El Sistema, a music

education program for poor, marginalized children that originated in Venezuela in the 1970s. El Sistema, whose motto is “Tocar y Luchar,” or play and fight, spread throughout Venezuela and inspired youth orchestras around the world, so children could learn and grow through music. After seeing the show, North Carolina resident Lucia Peel Powe was inspired to bring a similar program to Durham. She enlisted her friend Kathie Morrison, and the two women created Kidznotes. The nonprofit’s mission is to change lives through participation in youth orchestras, bands and choirs. “Thousands of scientific and academic studies have shown that music education improves academic achievement, builds communication skills, fosters creativity, develops teamwork and increases engagement in school,” said Rashad Hayward, Kidznotes’ assistant artistic director.
The nonprofit is in its 10th year of operation, serving children in grades pre-K through 12 with free instruction ranging from music theory and history to group lessons and vocal ensembles. The program operates eight hours per week, 35 weeks a year and offers a two-orthree-week camp in the summer. “Our ultimate goal is to train our musicians to be contributing citizens to our society,” Hayward said. “We use music to teach life skills, so the idea is that kids can take the skills they’ve learned through musical training and apply it to their everyday lives, throughout their lives.” The nonprofit partners with elementary schools in low-income communities, and all participants qualify for free and reduced lunch. In 2019-2020, Kidznotes served over 500 kids in Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Carrboro, according to Karen Kalafatas, director of development and communications.
Training the next Yo-Yo Ma would be amazing, but most importantly, we want to make sure that our students are prepared to handle any path in life — taking the discipline of music with them.”
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Kidznotes launched online classes for students and support materials for parents and teachers. The nonprofit also hosted virtual performances by teachers and professional musicians on Facebook. “Our work doesn’t start and stop in the classroom with our kids; rather, we aim to engage families, our school partners, volunteers, and community leaders and members in creating important social change through music,” Kalafatas said. The eight-person staff and over 50 teaching artists, who are all experienced educators and performers, serve as mentors and role models to the children. “Nucleos,” or main sites for the music centers, are located in elementary schools and serve as hubs for the music community. Families are encouraged to attend sessions and performances, to volunteer with the program, or to gather and enjoy time with one another.
— Rashad Hayward, assistant artistic director, Kidznotes “Kidznotes is about empowering children through musical learning — and building stronger communities,” Kalafatas said. Twice a year, the nonprofit puts on a show for the public. The winter show is free, and every student gets to perform. The end-of-year show, usually held in the spring, often revolves around a theme of social justice. Thousands come to see the Kidznotes ensembles from Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill perform. In 2019, the theme was “Be the Change.” The annual Kidznotes Grow Gala, held at the Umstead Hotel and Spa, is the organization’s big-
gest fundraiser. The 2020 event, held Feb. 15, raised more than $100,000 to support students and the program. Kalafatas says the event is also a great opportunity to connect young musicians with professional mentors. “We’re so lucky to have the support of individuals, foundations, corporations and community partners — all of whom believe in our mission, and ultimately make music education — and real social change — possible for so many kids,” she said. t
No child in Kidznotes is required to pay for the instruction or instrument they receive. The nonprofit welcomes financial donations and gifts of new and gently used instruments. For information, see kidznotes.org/support-us

The restaurant’s menu changes weekly, giving Chuong the freedom to present guests with something different each time they come in. The chef also goes to great lengths to oblige diners with dietary restrictions. “For example, the soy sauce we use is gluten-free,” he explained. “We understand the importance of making adjustments in the kitchen to accommodate our guests.” Small plates range from shrimp-, crabmeat- and quail-eggsuffused Vietnamese wedding soup to kimchi-laden braised pork belly. If it’s available when you visit, order the Hanoi calamari with arugula, sweet pepper slaw and roasted garlic aioli. Sublime entrees include a popular catch of the day like snapper with crawfish tail, brandy lobster sauce; jumbo crab meat and fresh garlic ramen noodles; and Saigon braised beef short rib with roasted baby carrots. caprese salad boiling water for two minutes. Plunge the peaches immediately into an ice water bath. Then, peel the peaches by pulling away the skin with a serrated paring knife. After peeling, cut in half, remove the pit and slice the peaches.
Salad Ingredients 4 ripe peaches 4 ounces arugula 1 ball of burrata (fresh mozzarella) torn into bite-sized pieces

Salad Dressing Ingredients 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon Champagne vinegar 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon honey 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried mint
3. Prepare the balsamic vinegar reduction. To make the balsamic vinegar reduction, place 1 cup of balsamic vinegar in a small saucepan and cook gently over medium heat. Do not boil. Stir occasionally and cook for 10-15 minutes or until the amount of liquid is reduced by half. The consistency will change from watery to a thicker, syrupy character. Remove the balsamic reduction from heat, and set aside in a small bowl or ramekin.

perfect pairing WRITTEN BY CHRIS ROCHE | PHOTOGRAPHED BY JONATHAN FREDIN
Paltrinieri Piria Lambrusco di Sobara DOC Paltrinieri Winery, a third-generation family winery currently run by Alberto Paltrinieri and his wife, Barbara, is in the heart of the Lambrusco region (Emilia-Romagna). This slightly sparkling wine has a pale color of crushed cranberries. There is a cutting acidity, tangy strawberries and red cherries and a strong dash of minerality. The fruitiness of the wine pairs well with the peaches in the salad. The acidity and fizz in the wine help balance the creaminess of the burrata and work well with the balsamic reduction. $18.99
2019 Vallevo Costa dei Trabocchi Rosato Terre di Chieti IGT Vallevo is a small, well-regarded cooperative winery in the Abruzzo Region of eastern Italy. Montepulciano is the predominant grape variety in this region. The wine exhibits a deep pink color, has an aroma and flavor of strawberry, with some herbal notes. It is lively and fresh on the palate but flavorful enough to stand up to all sorts of food. The slight spiciness of the wine pairs well with the spiciness of the arugula. The fruity characteristics and the medium acidity of this rosĂŠ pair well with the burrata and the mint in the salad dressing. $11.99
2019 Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc-Viognier Pine Ridge Vineyards was established in 1978 by Gary Andrus and his wife, Nancy. Chenin blanc and viognier are primary varietals in Yolo County in Northern California. This crisp, aromatic wine includes honeysuckle, orange blossom and white peach aromas. Bright and mouth-filling, there is a refreshing acidity and roundness, opening to a wide variety of flavors including lime, lemon, white peach and green apple. The peachy notes in this wine pair well with the peaches in the salad. The viognier component of the wine goes well with the arugula, and its viscous texture complements the honey in the dressing. The wine pairs well with the mint in the salad and garnish. $13.99

Berry Bramble
FROM MATT BETTINGER, CO-OWNER OF SIDEBAR PHOTOGRAPHED BY JONATHAN FREDIN
RATHER THAN AN OFFICIAL NAME, a bramble is more a style of cocktail. The refreshing bramble is traditionally made with gin, adding fresh berries, lemon juice, simple syrup and crushed ice. Inspired by thorny blackberry bushes, the bramble was created with that fruit in mind. The original recipe includes crème de mÝre (blackberry liqueur), which is left out of this streamlined formula. 1.75 ounces gin (vodka and tequila are great substitutes) 1 ounce lemon juice .75 ounce simple syrup* 2-3 teaspoons crushed or macerated berries** Combine spirit, lemon juice and simple syrup in a shaker. Shake without ice. Spoon berries into a rocks glass. Add crushed ice to the brim of the glass. Pour the contents of the shaker over the ice, and agitate slightly with a spoon. The colors of the berries should start to seep into the spirits mixture. If desired, top with more crushed ice, and garnish with fresh mint and whole berries. * Simple syrup: Add 1 cup white sugar into 1 cup hot water. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Refrigerate for up to one month ** Macerated berries: Mix 1 cup fresh berries, 1 teaspoon cider vinegar and 2-3 teaspoons of sugar. Adjust the amount of sugar, depending on ripeness of fruit and desired sweetness. Allow mixture to sit at room temperature for at least 10 minutes. CARY MAGAZINE 65

RALEIGH | CARY WESTERN WAKE
To create our 2020 list, Cary Magazine partnered with national survey company topDentists LLC, which sent ballots to dentists listed online with the American Dental Association and other local dental societies in Wake County, asking, “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?” Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and physical results. Respondents are asked QUESTIONS? to put aside any personal bias, to use only their knowledge of their peers’ More information about work when evaluating the other nominees. Dentists are also given the topDentists’ survey process opportunity to nominate other dentists who they feel should be included can be found at usatopdentists.com. in this list. Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are vetted with the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in North Carolina. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgements of his or her fellow dentists.

garden adventurer WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY L.A. JACKSON
Heuchera: The Evolution of Pretty NOT TO DILUTE THE WORKS of Charles Darwin, but, to me, evolution in the garden often means the simple progression of pretty to prettier. A good example of my thin theory is heuchera (Heuchera sp.), also called alum root or coral bells. Heuchera is a native American plant that, in the 1600s, caught the eyes of European botanists exploring the NewWorld wilds. It didn’t take long for this cutie from the Colonies to grace many gardens across The Big Pond. Heuchera in its original form was interesting, but not a visual knockout, so it remained a sideshow for centuries. However, in 1991, its evolution became a revolution. The cultivar ‘Palace Purple’, with unique, dark, smoldering foliage was named the Perennial Plant Association’s Plant of the Year. This not only turned the heads of gardeners, but also plant breeders eager to develop and market new heucheras with even more visual pop. Today, the once plain heuchera is a Cinderella success story, bringing many elegant hues to the garden ball, including improved purples, screaming limes, delicate reds and ornate coppers. There are even cultivars that sport ruffled foliage or deep leaf serrations, while others have veins etched in deep green, crimson or purple.
But wait, there’s more. Heucheras are also known for flaunting vertical clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers ranging in color from white to pink to red that are irresistible to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Heucheras are low-growing, deer-resistant perennials that reach around 12 inches tall, not counting their bloom spikes, and, depending on the cultivar, can fan out 12 to over 24 inches

wide. Several clustered together create an attractive groundcover in a perennial border, while a single specimen can make a planter mix special. Placement can be a bit tricky for heucheras. Because some are less sun-tolerant than others, do your homework on the selections you bring home. In general, a location that receives morning sun and light shade in the afternoon will please these fancy plants. Heucheras are cold hardy in our area, but they aren’t mucky soil hardy. Root rot can be a problem (especially in winter), if the growing ground doesn’t drain well. A raised bed, rock garden, container or well-worked, heavily amended site are all solid solutions to soggy soil. While heucheras can be regular pleasures in your garden, it is not a bad idea to reinvigorate the plants every three to four years by dividing them. I usually do this deed in early autumn, and my sassy-looking heucheras have always rebounded from the interruption. Call it thrive-al of the prettiest, if you will. L.A. Jackson is the former editor of Carolina Gardener Magazine. Want to ask L.A. a question about your garden? Contact him by email at lajackson1@gmail.com.
To Do in the GARDEN
‘Solar Power’
TIMELY TIP “Heucherella” is not a typo but rather a nifty cross between heuchera and the closely related, similar looking, fellow native tiarella (Tiarella sp.), also known as foamflower. Compared to heuchera, what heucherella — commonly called “foamy bells” — brings to the garden is distinctly lobed leaves in a wide variety of colors, impressive vein streaking and strong flower towers. Many of the newer introductions also tend to have improved heat and humidity tolerance. Like its parents, heucherella could be a short-lived beauty in wet, thick soil, so be sure it is set in a well-draining site. Also, as with heucheras, dividing heucherella plants every three to four years will help maintain their delightful displays.

• Garden visits from cats, dogs, squirrels, rabbits and raccoons often spell trouble. One possible way to ward off their unwelcome wanderings is to sprinkle fine-ground black pepper around your plants. These critters have sensitive noses, and a snoot full of this herbal sneeze powder (which will have to be reapplied after it rains) is sometimes enough to encourage them to romp elsewhere. • The vegetable garden is shifting into full production mode now. To keep the homegrown goodies coming, harvest squash,
cucumbers, okra, green beans and indeterminate tomatoes at least once a week to stimulate production of even more veggies well into the growing season. • Don’t think brown patches in your yard are automatically the result of a hot, dry summer. Stick a shovel into the top few inches of soil and turn it over. See any stubby, white “worms?” Lawn grubs are gorging themselves on the roots of your grass.
