Dear Reader, Welcome to the Third edition of the Latin American Art Exhibition that will be in a virtual format in this occasion. The Exhibition showcases the artistic work of visual artists presenting a variety of drawings and paintings inspired in Latin America. The Exhibition is part of a Festival that will include a series of online programming in diverse disciplines including dance, film-making, literature, music, and theatre.

This Festival was planned originally to take place in a traditional format, in person, but due to the current unprecedented pandemic COVID-19, it was decided to continue with the programming in a virtual format.

It has not been an easy process to put together this project due to different circumstances that our world is living trying to adapt and be protected from the pandemic.

We believe that is especially important to continue to do our work, now in a digital format. First, because we can showcase the talent of artists. Second, because we can provide to those who are isolated with some options to be entertained or educated. Third, because we need to keep a positive spirit and be resilient and adapt to the new circumstances. A better future is coming after the storm.

We would like to invite you to visit and look at the work of the 21 visual artists presenting at the Virtual Latin American Art Exhibition. We have participation from Canadian and Latin American artists with a diverse array of artwork. Please support the artists and our organizations by considering acquiring a unique piece of art.

Federico Airaudo

Federico Airaudo is a painter of murals and canvases from Guayaquil, Ecuador.

His work is known for playfully re-characterising commonplace aspects of Guayaquil’s diverse social scene. Using animals, tropical plant life and familiar (often overlooked) objects of this place, his art gestures toward the socio-political dynamics of this industrial Latin city in accessible and humorous ways.

Federico’s paintings have been featured in national newspapers, tv channels and imaged with international corporations including Pilsener beer and Skullcandy. Most recently, he was contracted by the Municipality of Guayaquil to enliven public spaces with over 7 large-scale murals that are now displayed at malls, restaurants, boutiques and parks around the city.

Hervert Sanchez Beltran (Sanbel)

Sanchez Beltrán is a visual artist from El Salvador. In 1985 he begins his art education at the National centre for the arts in San Salvador. In 1988, he travels to Brazil to study print making and sculpture. In 1991 he emigrates to Canada. In 1999 he completes a degree in visual communications at the Alberta University of the Arts.

Sanchez Beltrán’s work departs from a socio-political human struggle. He explores the personal conflict that we all go through in order to create better societies. Human figures become the center of attention in his work. Sanchez Beltrán searches for the alternative voices that society ignores. He uses surrealistic elements that play in conjunction with an abstraction that allows the viewer to complete the work in his/her mind.

Sanchez Beltrán work is part of public and private collections in El Salvador, Guatemala, Brazil, Argentina, New York, Miami, Los Ángeles, Buenos Aires, Goiania, Guatemala, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. In Calgary he has shown at: Illingworth Kerr Gallery, Nickle Arts Museum, Marion Nicoll Gallery, Triangle Gallery, Stride Gallery, City Hall Atrium, Art is Vital Gallery and Arts on Atlantic Gallery.

Claudia Chagoya

Claudia Chagoya is a Mexican artist who holds an MFA degree from the University of Calgary. Her art practice engages with topics such as the diverse, ingrained, misogynistic understanding of women prevalent in Mexican society, and the violence waged against them stemming from these assumptions. Her current body of work reflects upon the aftermath of feminicide and complex grieving derived from it.

David Cheney

David Cheney is a local Calgary artist. His art is a reflection of travel, literature, and music. He is an active member of Artpoint Gallery and Studios Society where he maintains a studio.

Although born in Saskatchewan he was raised and lived most of his life in Calgary. He attended the Alberta College of Art (1980-1984) and received a Master of Fine Art degree from York University, Toronto in 1990. He has received travel grants from the Canada Council and Alberta Culture, and has his work in a variety of private and public collections.

He has been a member of the Burns Visual Arts Society, the Alberta Society of Artists, and Untitled Arts plus taught watercolour for Calgary continuing education programs. Since 2000, he has donated paintings to fundraise for a variety of charities, which he continues to this day.

Elisa Rubalcava Cobo

Born in Mexico, Elisa lives and works in Calgary Alberta. She discovered her passion for oil painting and the palette-knife technique in 1998 while studying Architecture and Fine Arts in Mexico. She also specialized in Heritage Conservation and studied Fine Arts Restoration in Barcelona, Spain.

She came to Canada in 2011 and her artwork is inspired in the natural beauty of Alberta’s landscapes, alongside the endless memories of people and scenes encountered on her trips around the world.

Elisa’s background as Architect gives her work a strong sense of design, composition, and understanding of colour.

She has participated in group exhibitions and charity art auctions in Mexico and Northern Alberta.

Maya Corona

Maya Corona is a Graphic Designer / Visual Artist. Born and raised in Mexico City.

Creating it’s been in her heart as far back as she can remember. She has an Advertising & Graphic Design degree Maya worked in that world since she was in school until she moved to Vancouver, BC in 2007 and went to school again did Electronic Media design to be able to connect now with locals and start networking and getting into that world. She met the love of her life and had twins they had a little studio that closed. Her young family decided to move to Calgary and start all over again.

Graphic Design got unfulfilling for Maya, she wanted to do fun projects where creativity and freedom were present. In 2017 was playing with some watercolours, she started selling her art and teaching people how to paint and enjoy this amazing medium. In 2019 she got serious about her painting business, quit the graphic design world and started her adventure in art.

Now all she wants is to share her experience and inspire others to find their happy place. She keeps exploring and creating because she believes it is never too late to learn.

Carolina Duran

Carolina Duran is a Bolivian artist now based in Alberta, Canada. She works with a daring color palette, either with her figurative portraits or her abstract expression. She creates images with multiple layering, so diverse in temper, by means of stains and color, typically contemporary in the making which expresses the vibrant spirit of her Latin-American culture.

Her love for the arts began at a young age. During school, Carolina used to spend her vacations in the painting workshops of the great artists in her homeland. She studied textile painting, drawing, acrylic, and oil painting. After going through a realistic stage, she discovered the greats: Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Matisse, she comes across pure colors and freedom of expression. She delved even more into her artistic practice her palette gets transformed, she evolved and changed her style.

Now, she focuses much of his attention on abstract acrylic paintings and contemporary art while constantly exploring, improving, and refining her artistic expression.

Sharina Fong

Sharina Fong was born in San Ignacio B.C.S. Mexico, in 1984, with architecture studies at ITLP. As a self-taught painter, she obtained her first exhibition in 2004 at the La Paz B.C.S. From 2005 to 2015 it resides in the State of B.C.S. holding individual and group exhibitions. At the end of 2015 he moved to the City of Ensenada B.C. also exposing his artistic work individually and collectively to date.

The themes that the artist always tries to capture are the emotions and states of the human soul reflected in looks, faces and bodies, some taken from the artist's mind, her synesthetic memories or surroundings, which lately her creations are a set of these the last two, in an almost surreal figurative expressionist style with colors or only black and white with the touches of the memory of that melody he heard live.

In 2017 she participates in the International Painting Biennial of Mexico, being selected for the collection of the San Luis PotosĂ­ museum. She also participates in the PĂŠrez Romo Biennial and is selected with a piece to exhibit at the La Muerte museum. That same year she was the First Place Winner of the annual MFM Contest with the theme "Mexico s Great". She is the1st place winner of the Art Batlle Calgary, Alberta Canada 2020, and currently exhibiting at the international collective of artists NFIA.

Alejandro Loera GarcĂ­a (Dionysos)

He worked as a volunteer in a shelter for Central American migrants for 8 months (a symbolic eternity), an experience that marked his vision of the world. His work is born from a need to express these feelings and the philosophical proposal of Nietzsche. Alejandro also has 12 unpublished stories, 4 novels, 1 philosophical book (named "The endless passionate existence") and many other writings and more than a hundred paintings that attempt to unite the expression of his work. It has several individual exhibitions in Mexico and more than twenty collectives. He has won honorable mention in the Salon of October 2016 and had artistic experiences in Germany, Panamå and Colombia. Dionysos as the god of madness, of theater; of the tragedy ... *Note: Alejandro’s 3 following paintings are part of the same collection, on a love and tragedy hidden history.

Born and raised in San Salvador, Juan Carlos bean his career as a graphic designer with specialization in the visual arts (painting and sculpture).

In 2009, his curiosity and questioning led him to la Universidad Don Bosco where he studied teaching and became an elementary school art teacher. In 2011 he moves to Canada with his family to continue his career as an Artist.

In March 2019 Juan Carlos along with other Hispanic artists organized and participated in the Latin American Visual Artists Exhibition “Raices” (Roots) at Inti Designs Studio & Gallery in Calgary.

In may 2019 he was invited to participate in the Latin American Art Exhibition at C-space King Edward organized by Casa Mexico.

Juan Carlos is currently participating as a board member in the founding of SpanicArt, a non-profit organization destined to help professional Hispanic and emerging artists resining in Calgary. Using a unique and personal technique of drawing on wood, Juan Carlos explores through his art, the powerful human connection and deep emotions of compassion, grace, and love.

Born in Monterrey Mexico, a self taught artist since childhood, Constantly experimenting with all kind of materials, and styles She believes she will never stop learning so she reads art books, watches tutorials and take art courses to discover new techniques and materials to later apply onto her work.

In the past she had participated on collective exhibitions in Mexico City, Italy and UK. She moved to Calgary in 2016 and since then she has participated on several collective exhibitions including British Columbia and Calgary. Currently she is part of the Arts and Crafts committee in the Northern Hills area.

Felipe Jasso

I am a Mexican Canadian photographer and visual artist based in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I graduated with a BFA in Photography from the Alberta University of the Arts. Growing up in the north of Mexico and having the experience to live in many small towns and big cities, I have the opportunity to learn more about Mexican culture and the people, something I keep as one of my greatest gifts. My first experience with photography and its representation of “two-dimensional world” was using a film camera, volunteering as the “family photographer”.

It was years later when I moved to Canada that I decided to join AUArts to pursue my passion for photography. I am fascinated by the power of light in photography: the light introduces a story, just enough to inform the theme; shadows hide in mystery, waiting to be interpreted; small details of light reveal important messages; Both light and shadows, with the help of some imagination, viewers can recover the storyline all in one frame. My goal is to tell a story with my images, to create characters that I have built with my experiences, and to use symbolism to unveil the subconsciousness. Sometimes I find myself trapped in the images that I make, a space between the colorful Mexican culture and the cold Alberta landscape.

Avril Lopez

Avril Lopez is a visual artist from Morelia, Mexico. She moved to Calgary to complete her Masters in Fine Arts program at the University of Calgary, in November of 2018.

Lopez participated in several group shows in Mexico City, including some of them are, “Los Ojos de la Crueldad” (Eyes of Cruelty) at the San Carlos Museum and a group show and catalog “El Futuro No Esta Escrito” (The Future Is Not Written) which is part of the “Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche” (Benetton Research Studies Foundation) in Venice, Italy.

In Canada, Lopez has had the opportunity to show her work in Calgary and Canmore. Such as, Nickle Gallery (University of Calgary), Art Point Gallery, Artsplace, and Artcommons.

Jessica Armas Noda

Jessica Armas Noda, is the person behind JessAN Creations. She is a passionate artist and teacher, originally from Cuba, now living in Calgary, Canada. Nowadays, she is a member of SpanicArts and The Group Art society of Calgary.

She has been interested in art her entire life, expressing her creativity and feelings through the canvas.

Inspired by nature, beauty and tropical life experiences, she creates colorful contemporary intuitive art. A private collector, closed to her mentioned: “The colors on your paintings, reflect the colors of your soul�.

Working primarily on acrylics, she usually employs intuitive painting as a background, using diverse tools to create shapes and textures. Then, she applies negative painting, by drawing and doodling on top of the intuitive background, specially florals.

She has experienced herself about the therapeutic and healing powers of creating art. Whether you are an art lover or an art creator, she wants to inspire you. Supporting other artists and giving back part of her sales to support Calgary Food Bank is one of her ways to show her altruism and gratefulness.

Viviana Pacheco

I was born in Guatemala, grew up in Northern Manitoba, where my Dad put me in art classes, and encouraged me to be an artist. I have been creative, specifically in the visual arts from a very young age, however, did not paint for over 20 years.

My fascination with nature and animals is what drives me to be prolific in my output. My use of bright expressive colours is greatly influenced by my latin heritage. My paintings have bold intense strokes, strong hard lines, and a linear almost cartoonish style. I quickly have developed my own technique and enjoy experimenting within it, and I try to expand my repertoire by painting new and interesting subjects.

Kim Parrent

I am a born and raised Calgarian but have lived in Majorca, Spain and Houston, Texas. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Calgary with a major in Art History. Owning and operating a small business for over 20 years installing window displays, doing faux finishing and decorative painting in retail stores, showhomes and private residences has allowed me to paint for a living.

In 2017 I created and painted graphics in The Calgary National Music Centre. Participating in a city wide initiative to create banners for Calgary, banners I created were hung in the community of Garrison Green.

One of these paintings is now in The Museum of the Regiments and two portraits I did of Indigenous Chiefs are on the Tsu’tina Nation in the Indian affairs building (Tribal Council) . Being on the event committee for Prostaid Calgary in 2019 I was able to paint a portrait of Legendary Canadian musician Randy Bachman.

A portrait I did of Ian Curtis of the band Joy Division sold to one of the founding band members in the UK. I am on the Manchester Cultural history record for producing this painting. In 2018, I participated in Expoluchalive in Las Vegas and exhibited the large oil paintings of luchadors I create now and continue to paint. I am currently working on a series of paintings depicting all the Stampede Wrestlers.

Recently, a portrait I did of Dale Bozzio from the 80s band Missing Persons was sent to Los Angeles it will be included and published in her biography, Destination Unknown.

Alan Rodriguez

Since his childhood he had an interest in drawing, much of his time was spent playing with the pencil, imagining scenes and taking them to paper, creating his own toys and spending his afternoons observing the horizon, thinking about giants over the clouds and mountains.

His passion for observing cloud formation comes from fear of them, that is, fear of storms, forcing his mind to interpret the weather.

As time passed, fear turned him into a lover, he admired so much how vulnerable we are, before the uncontrollable forces. He supposed that "we call nature what we do not understand". This leads him to delve into topics that he depicts in his work.

He decides to dedicate himself completely to painting at an early age, since he believes that there is no science that encompasses more than the imagination, with this he intends to make an extensive dialogue.

Currently, his works are represented by galleries recognized in Mexico and Europe.

Ariadna Sly is originally from Argentina.

She is an architect and she graduated in Architectural University of Buenos Aires in 1985. After that she studied art for four years in the Art University of San Juan.

Ariadna lived in Peru for four years. And there, she continued her Art education in “Corriente ALterna� institute where she studied painting, draw and photography.

Ariadna worked in her architectural profession while she painted and participate in several art exhibitions during the years in Argentina.

Ariadna moved from Argentina to Calgary in 2012 then she continuing painting and drawing.

Ariadna paints abstract, portraits, landscaping, and horses in oil on canvas.

Juan Carlos Urria

Juan Carlos Urria is a Cuban-born Canadian artist whose style encompasses a wide spectrum of forms, ranging from the figurative to abstraction. He graduated as a Visual Artist from the Roberto Diago professional Art School in 2000.

He lives in Calgary with his wife and three children and enjoy biking, reading, airplanes and spending time with the family. His current artwork explores a variety of material and mixed media inviting viewers to move into a figurative space where color and forms converge together as one idea. In 2017 the Jubilee Auditorium displayed his latest artwork as a single artist event entitled “Metaphors�.

Almendra Vergara

R. Almendra V. Vergara Pachuca, Hgo, Mexico, 1982. Graduated from the Bachelor of Visual Arts (2006), specialized in painting and graphics, she entered in 2012 the Diploma in Scenographic Production at the Faculty of Arts and Design, Academy from San Carlos of the Autonomous University of Mexico. She has exhibited in more than a dozen group exhibitions in Mexico and abroad; She has developed in the scenic field as a cultural producer, scenic painter, props and workshop worker at various educational levels.

Her work talks about the childhood, migration and female rights.

Since 2018 she works with El Fénix Producciones as a remote production assistant since she lives in Calgary, Alberta Canada also collaborating with "Mictlán Collective, Art and Research" as a producer, performance artist in different events such as ExpoLatino, Día de Muertos Parade, Folclor Fest as well as in “Roots” exhibition of the Latin Visual Artist Collective Inti Design Studio & Gallery Calgary Alberta Ca. Likewise in various short films and web series, during 2019, LatinAmerican Exhibition, Casa Mexico in Alberta Foundation and works by theater with Alta Baja Productions in (2018).

Lovelia Vera

Lovelia Vera is an experienced and creative Venezuelan-Canadian Artist who specializes in original ideas, theories, and interpretations using various artistic mediums. Inspired by Picasso, Dali, Bouguereau, Leger and influenced from real life experiences in Canada, Venezuela, India, and USA, she learned to express her feelings through canvas and found art to be her creative calling in 1984.

A committed perfectionist and passionate best describe this talented artist. It is her belief that the sensation of freedom is achievable in every style and subject. She strives to convey that emotion in every canvas from the moment she starts creating. Lovelia is capable of creating something very abstract or shockingly realistic. Either path she takes, leads her to ultimate success and enjoyment.

She mastered various techniques in sketching, pastels, oils and acrylic. Her formal training included among others: Visual Art, Architectural Drawing, Professional Photography, techniques in use of colors, analysis of famous art works, portraits, still life, nature paintings and stone sculpture courses.

Lovelia’s artworks have been proudly displayed in various art exhibitions around the world and in private collections in addition her artwork has been included in various publications.

Casa Mexico fosters the preservation of heritage and identity for Mexicans living in Alberta, while encouraging their integration into the Canadian culture by providing a forum to showcase their talents and contributions to Canadian society.
