elcome Spring & Hello Dear Reader! The spring numbers remain among my favourites in editing. In particular, I've always been very excited to show the choice of the new colour palette that will accompany us throughout the season. Usual, we choose bright tones, full of life and energy but this time we have decided to reconsider neutral colours and its potential. From page 15 onwards you will find the Design Trends selection of basic colours that, very often, we underestimate them and use as a "background" to the bold ones. This time, however, it's the basic hues that play the role of the protagonists. I assure you that, opting for them, you can create a very elegant and chic environment but at the same time full of tranquility and inspiration. On the other hand, for those who are in the wild search for design novelties, I suggest you take a trip to the Parisian fair Maison&Objet. In March? Yes, that's right! Postponed from January, here is the first annual edition of the exhibition and on page 41 we reserve a taste of what you can find there: from the "New Luxury" theme (page 42) to the designer of the year (page 46) to the main showroom to visit in the city (page 48). So, browse the pages of this edition and let yourself be inspired!

I’m always interested in your opinion, send me any feedback or suggestions at zhanna@gandgmagazine.eu

DESIGN TRENDS MINIMAL NEUTRALS THROUGH A NEW LENS A palette with neutral colors is what many do not expect for the new season. Spring is associated with bright colors that symbolise the beginning of a new life after the cold winter. But this time, following Pantone Color Institute tips, we propose some basic colors that should not be underestimated: each of them is full of potential and placed in the right way within a room, expresses its majesty. Ancient techniqueof pyrography Projected by the Ukrainian designer Valery Kuznetsove for PanopPkum CollecPons Gallery, the sideboard BUGS is a vivid example of emoPonal design: something very earthly and cosmic at the same Pme, both innovaPve and primal. The facades of the sideboard are decorated manually by the technique of graphic drawings, which only enhances the emoPon. Nature always arouses curiosity: here, pyrography as one of the oldest Ukrainian techniques of applying images on wood by burning appears on the facades as drawings, which are similar to the pacerns on the backs of insects. Located in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, in the province of Florence, immersed in the Chianti area, the architecture of the building and nature are perfectly blended along all the directions to create a unique element, without too much contrast. The morphology of the land is truly taken into consideration and is enhanced through the three fundamental elements – the driveway, the terraces and Piazza Furla – which define clear areas around the building volumes. Nature crosses the boundaries between inside and outside thanks to a system of patios and green roofs overlooking the wooded area. www.geza.it

INSPIRATION THEME: “NEW LUXURY” Unbridled desire and unbounded imagination! Such is the direction in which the brazenly buoyant luxury sector is heading, exploring new paths that draw on haute-couture artisan craftsmanship and high technology on the one hand, and pop culture and the values of inclusivity on the other. This new phenomenon has served as inspiration for the upcoming edition of Maison&Objet that proposes its two various creative iterations: “Uber Luxury” and “Lux Populis”.

“When people come to Paris, it is to tap into an expertise and this oneof-a-kind lifestyle, which can be found nowhere else,“ explains Philippe Brocart, the trade fair’s General Manager. Vincent Grégoire, trend hunter at international style and innovation consultancy NellyRodi , offers his own insight into this increasingly strong craving for luxury:

“in uncertain times, people feel the need for 42 | G&G _ Magazine

something different, the need for emotions and experiences, the need to push fantasy to its limits.”

Uber Luxury combines fine crafts with new technology, with one foot in the past and the other firmly in the future. In this trend, designers develop materials with the help of physicists, fabrics are adorned with silk, copper, and LED threads, sofas become fully connected objects, and waiting lists grow longer for

FRANKLIN AZZI - DESIGNER OF THE YEAR At each edition, Maison&Objet names a Designer of the Year, celebrating the work of the most outstanding talents in the international design and decoration scene. Having been unable to present his installation after receiving the accolade in September 2020, Franklin Azzi will now take centre stage at this edition with Retro Futur, an immersive exploration of his creative process. Working out of his Parisian agency, which was created in 2006, Azzi develops a crossdisciplinary approach that draws on a potpourri of perspectives and disciplines. By relentlessly sparking a dialogue between architecture, interior design, design and modern art, and with the backing of his dedicated endowment fund, he hones a talent for design and creation that embraces all scales and spaces. From the kind of urban microarchitecture embodied by the Eiffel Kiosque and its prefabricated structure, to towers in Dubai and Paris, and not forgetting the refurbishment of existing 46 | G&G _ Magazine

structures such as the Alstom warehouses in Nantes, his work is underpinned by a quest for sustainability tailored to meet users’ needs.

RISING TALENTS JAPAN Japanese design has always been championed and backed by Maison&Objet, and consistently holds a prominent place in the Parisian trade fair’s programs and directories. SAFI, the organiser of Maison&Objet together with Ateliers d’Art de France, have decided to create a new category – Rising Talent Awards Craft. This new aspect of the award is supposed to meet the buyers’ expectations and crave for the attractive values of Craft. With core values such as inspirational creativity, handmade one-of-a kind pieces or limited series, in the intimacy of a workshop, Craft offers a specific concern on quality and durability, that were here way before the pandemic.

”Our Craft is at the heart of the market's challenges. This evolution of the Rising Talent Awards reflects this reality” says Aude Tahon, President of Ateliers d'Art de France. You can find the Japan’s up-andcoming design talent in Hall 6: it'll be a golden opportunity to discover this young generation’s ambitious creations and unbridled imagination! 52 | G&G _ Magazine

Doshi, le papier en mouvement by Haruka Misawa

The designer imbues this passive material with its own unique capabilities, inviting it to explore unchartered territory and break out of its box. Her “Doshi” (literally “paper in movement”) project gives paper a mind of its own, just as if it was a living being. When the metallic particles react to the magnetic force, the previously still paper slowly begins to animate. Paper is a material that can easily be folded or ripped, eliminating the need for tools. It also boasts a delightfully tactile quality, with each tiny irregularity slowly revealing itself as the fingers glide across its surface.

SNIP SNAP & BLOOM - The playful world of textiles by Yuri Himuro Yuri Himuro explores exciting new ways of interacting with textiles by inviting everyone to create their own unique pattern by cutting into her fabrics. Her initial concept gave birth to the SNIP SNAP project, designed around dual-layered fabric. As the scissors wend their way across the surface, snipping through the uppermost threads, new stories gradually unfurl. The SNIP SNAP project then led on to the creation of the “CULTIVATE collection” rug presented in collaboration with CC Tapis, a manufacturer of handwoven rugs based in Milan. The BLOOM project, meanwhile, was conceived around a fabric with a dualsided weave featuring an eclectic array of patterns. The delicate refinement of the flowers and leaves is exquisitely captured through the use of varying textures in the weave. 54 | G&G _ Magazine

Imbuing materials and surroundings with a new set of values: Rust Harvest and ForestBank by Yuma Kano

Rust destroys aircrafts, seizes up car engines, brings bridges crashing down and causes corrosion inside concrete. It is synonymous with damage, disintegration and destruction. Yet what Yuma Kano sees is its breathtaking beauty and kaleidoscopic patterns. He chooses to champion the material and even turns it into something truly special, using it as an envelope for different products. The Rust Harvest project draws on a number of natural elements, such as light, rainwater, earth and seawater, to encourage rust to develop on metal sheets. That rust is then carefully lifted from the sheet and added to a tailored acrylic resin to create a brand-new material, with the designer seeing the rust “harvesting” process as a metaphor for the agricultural cycle. The ForestBank project, meanwhile, was sparked by Japan’s deforestation crisis, and has given rise to the emergence of new materials. Each piece is built from natural and organic elements, such as bark, branches and fruit combined with acrylic resin. Right from the very start, the project was dictated by the materials available and the production processes. 56 | G&G _ Magazine

"In the long run, it would be a good idea to produce the items in different locations, since the raw materials available vary depending on the place, the season and the forest environment."

#MAISONETOBJET Reinterpreting traditional Japanese paper lanterns: SUKI and PHASE by Baku Sakashita

SUKI is a lighting collection that mixes semi-translucent paper, known as Tengujoshi, with delicate stainless-steel wire. In Japanese, “suki” has a multitude of meanings, including “making paper by hand”, “transparency” and “empty space”. Baku Sakashita serves up his very own take on traditional lighting by creating a space between the LED light source and the wafer-thin paper through which the light filters, casting geometric shadows across the surrounding walls and floor. While PHASE is a lighting collection that symbolises the phases of the moon. The light is diffused with the help of a disk that captures the light from an LED light source.

"I’ve been sculpting balsa wood to make fishing bait ever since I was a child. Making things with my own two hands is rooted deep in my DNA."

PERFECT HARMON The new duplex apartment set in the coastal plain of Sharon (above Tel Aviv) planned and designed by Nitzan Horowitz for a couple and their grown son, incorporates unusual combinations of natural materials in their raw form combined with other ultra-modern clean elements that complement each other and create a unique and unusual space. Photography by Oded Smadar

NY

“The owners have exquisite taste. They are goal-oriented and knew exactly what they wanted ahead of the renovation… The owner is an avid nature lover, and it was important to her that we incorporate natural elements in their raw form. From the first planning stages, we discussed the incorporation of natural stone. The couple sent me some beautiful pictures that served as inspiration for the way in which we incorporated the basalt stone walls, imported from Greece, in a variety of ways throughout the property.” - Nitzan Horowitz 64 | G&G _ Magazine

urchased by the couple shortly before the completion of the works, the new 250m² property has been refurbished into a 4bedroom spacious and well-lit open duplex, with the entire second level dedicated exclusively to the couple's adult child. The entry-level entrance reveals two main elements, a large north-facing window that drenches the large living space in an abundance of natural light, and a dominant 9-meter stone-cladding ‘power wall’ that connects all areas of the open space (a TV corner, a reading area and a well-equipped kitchen). The designer opted for a minimalist yet

P

very elegant design, all in gray tones: from light to dark. He chose a large 4-meter cozy velvet sofa, a light rug that contrasts with the dark wooden floor and finally blackout curtains that are ideal for creating a more intimate atmosphere. The only touch of color is given by the green of a couple of cushions. The entrance wall connects with the kitchen that includes graphite-gray nano Formica laminated floor-to-ceiling cabinets that conceal a variety of kitchen appliances, ample storage space and the pantry door. While, wild onyx stone cladding covers the kitchen island, making it a very dominant piece that blends well with the colors and textures of the stone and wooden floors. Next to the sofa there is a reading area that includes a wool Chesterfield chaise-lounge and a coffee table of the same onyx stone as the kitchen island. On this side, the stone wall includes a fireplace and a hidden door that conceals the entrance to a safe room turned fully equipped gym.

A corridor leads to a spacious 55m² bedroom. Prior to the renovation, this space included 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, and a family room. The designer was able to create a spacious area where all features were fully addressed. The walk-in wardrobe is spacious and includes an elegant ushaped piece of furniture. The bathroom is unusually large and includes an oval freestanding bath and sink designed to soften the straight lines dominating the space, a walk-in shower, and a smokey floor-toceiling mirror that adds reflection and a touch of uniqueness to the space. Concrete-style granite porcelain cladding covers the walls. The bedroom itself is divided into two areas - a sleeping area and a lounging area adjacent to the fireplace wall.

The unusual staircase leads to the top floor: Horowitz chose to remove the original stairwell and replace it with a clean geometrical glass banister in shades of grey and wooden flooring was installed on the stairs. "A 60m² kingdom” designed for the couple’s 20-year-old son is an open space that includes a sleeping area, a bathroom, an entertaining area and study corner. In addition, he enjoys a 60m² west facing private balcony overlooking the sea. In order to create a partition between the sleeping area and the bath area, Horowitz created a multi-functional piece that incorporates multiple storage areas as well as a video/audio unit. The unit is Formica laminated in a grey shade that matches that of the stone wall and the overall natural concept. Similar to the bathroom in the first-level master bedroom, Horowitz chose basalt granite porcelain cladding in the secondlevel bath area too. A natural granite stone 68 | G&G _ Magazine

and Formica laminate were used for the bath area cupboard and fitted in a unique composition, so they look almost as though they are blending into each other.

“The materials used in the first level continue into the second level. These are dynamic and intense materials that blend really well across the second level and are emphasized by the color scheme, the use of grey woodwork and textures that work well with the natural materials.”

BLUE ACCENTS The Room Studio presents an 820m2 project of architecture, interior design, decoration and construction in Barcelona with a focus on elegance and serenity where all the interior and exterior rooms of the house are totally connected. Photography by Mauricio Fuertes

T

he staring point was a plot of land provided by the client, where the architectural project was carried out from the architectural design to the exterior design and landscaping. The house is built around the needs of the owners, a young couple with two young children and an important social life. Comfort is sought throughout the house, not only aesthetically, but also thanks to solar, light and climate control. The aim is to integrate technology in order to feel it and enjoy it with all five senses but remaining totally integrated in each space. On the ground floor is the day area to enjoy with family and friends and through a corridor you enter a different environment. The living room is well defined using the oiled walnut wood floor which creates a balanced contrast with the oiled oak wood cladding of the corridor. As for the design

72 | G&G _ Magazine

of the whole house, The Room Studio used a very natural and soft color palette characterized by a cream-colored sofa by Frigerio and white transparent curtains that

allow natural light to pass through the French windows. To add some color, home accessories in shades of brown and blue were used such as cushions, the majestic

BSB Alfombras carpet and artwork by Miquel Alzueta Gallery. The design is completed by the central tables by Molteni&C with soft curves.

74 | G&G _ Magazine

In the central part of the ground floor, we find the dining room and the kitchen with quite different styles. The dining room has a fairly minimalist design and is characterized by the abundant use of wood. The sideboard, the structure of the table and that of the chairs and to complete a partition between the corridor and the room are all made of wood. The only touch of color, in this case petrol blue, is given by the upholstery of the Viccarbe dining chairs. There are no doors between the dining area and the kitchen to ensure smooth movement. The kitchen, on the other hand, has an avant-garde and modern feel but it too is characterized by walnut wood that plays with black and white. Here too the touch of color is always present in the chairs in the blue shade but this time it is a delicate pastel bluish. While through the sliding French doors you immediately access the outdoor dining area with a wonderful view of the swimming pool.

In the multi-purpose room, there is a kids’ zone where a climbing system is created by playing with the height of the ceilings, and a cinema area by the elegant design. In particular, the predominant white contrasts 76 | G&G _ Magazine

with the black finishes of the lighting square-shaped tables. The different shades of blue are found in the cushions, in the Gan Rugs' carpet and in the artwork from Miquel Alzueta Gallery.

An architectural staircase with a modern design leads to the upper floor with the sleeping and rest area, and the basement, where the car parking area, the general facilities and the gym are located.

The sleeping area reserved for parents includes a spacious bedroom, an office, a dressing room and a luxurious bathroom: the designers have opted not to put doors, but each room is well defined. Both the office and the bedroom follow the design of the whole house: the light tones with touches of blue and terracotta, the use of wood and the large windows overlooking the garden. The dressing room and bathroom have a darker tone provided by the gray walls. In the bathroom, in addition to a double sink, the bathroom fixtures, a shower, the designers included also a white freestanding bathtub above which Nuura's suspended lamp has been positioned as an object of décor.

80 | G&G _ Magazine

On the other side of the floor, we find the children's rooms with attached bathrooms. Both have a very inviting look characterized by the use of warm colors and a rustic touch. To give a playful sense, some color wallpapers have been inserted on some walls. Particular attention is paid to the light wood bed of Mon Lit Cabane in the shape of a house where The Room Studio have put a bespoke lighting. The bathroom design is simple and minimalist. It has soft colors that give a sense of serenity.

the entry, existing plumbing stacks required to feed all levels of the building were originally concealed behind a bulky piece of joinery. Realising that it was from this vantage point that one could first appreciate glimpses to the harbour beyond, the three vertical service elements were left exposed, with one being meticulously dressed from top to bottom in dark brown leather boot lace and casually tied off at the hip. Within this area, a fully serviced laundry is disguised behind sliding doors, whilst a custom off-form terrazzo ledge (supported by an existing structural concrete column) provides a ledge to place keys and mail upon arrival. With space at a premium, maximising the storage capacity and multi-functionality of every element in the apartment was essential. Form and

84 | G&G _ Magazine

function were inseparable from the outset of the design process. Almost very element of the apartment is custom (including furniture). All that was purchased was a coffee table, the sofa and bedding. Everything else is bespoke. The living area doubles up as a guest bedroom. The decorative grey-stained panel with ochre linear pulls framed by a

full-height storage unit integrated into the rear wall is both a backdrop to watch a movie upon (a projector screen is concealed within the timber clad ceiling) and bed base. Pull on its handle and the beautifully detailed door reveals a mattress for sleepovers. For guests staying the night, privacy is provided by a slatted timber screen which can be drawn across for

privacy. Opposite we find the light gray corner sofa that follows the colored palette of the whole house. The ambiance is completed by a series of home accessories including a couple of rectangular tables, vases of various shapes and materials, and a set of cushions, some with a touch of orange. Behind the sofa, the dining area glimpses through dark wood panels.

86 | G&G _ Magazine

The dining room and kitchen have an open space even if the dining area is well delimited by a beige carpet that adds a touch of warmth to the ambiance. While a custom horizontal pendant lamp suspended over the dining table made from stripy vintage ticking material evokes an exotic Bedouin tent ambience in tandem with scattered tribal embellishments and dark stone within the apartment. It can be raised on a pulley to enable an uninterrupted view of the painting hung directly behind it and to clear standing space during social gatherings. The kitchen floor was raised with new terrazzo tiles laid upon it. With access to the balcony positioned directly off the kitchen’s location, a custom sculptural island bench-top was designed to sit at an angle, allowing for a clear egress path

around it. In turn, it transforms the typically functional element into a decorative piece. Its 80-millimetre-thick marble ‘apron’ is set on two cylindrical legs; the thicker drum contains the sink’s plumbing. Plum-hued blinds have been chosen over the windows to ensure greater privacy.

Within the bedroom, the curved form of the wall enveloping the bed incorporates floating side tables, eliminating excess bulk. In addition, a slim 150mm recess in the room was transformed into shoe storage and adorned with textured seat pads to provide the perfect perch while tying shoelaces.

In front of the bedroom, there is the bathroom. Within it, the large mirror was custom designed to house three ceramic vessels to store loose toothbrushes and combs. Discreet full height cabinetry is squeezed into corners and cavities to accommodate other bathroom essentials.

ith its views across the Puget Sound and to downtown Seattle, the 5.500 square foot home has been designed for the clients, Brandon and Sarah Ebel and their children: each has three. They combined families for the first time with the build of this house where each member had unique needs and desires for how the spaces should function. The house is spread across two main living levels as well as a basement that opens out onto the pool terrace and a rooftop level with extensive gardens. From the upper north street, the house appears as two stacked horizontal bars with the materiality of the lower mass grounding the building and lightweight porous upper level revealing hints of the interior space. The upper level is clad in vertical tight knot cedar slats which open up to form screen walls over portions of the upper-level glazing. Entering the house through a wide hallway

“The massing of the house allows it to appear in scale with neighboring properties on the north side and opens up to the south as it cascades down the site.”

creates a physical and visual connection from front to back and a glimpse of the views beyond. The rear of the house opens up to the garden terraces and swimming pool.

94 | G&G _ Magazine

At the heart of the main level is a double height living space with wood burning fireplace and chimney that extends vertically through the space. Furthermore, for Brandon, a music lover and owner of a local record label, intertwining audio throughout the house and creating a space for his large record collection was a high priority. Therefore, the designers have undertaken to include some musical equipment in the living room near the fireplace. This home presents an existing series of terraced gardens and pathways that were reworked to form also a dining terrace. And

“An emphasis was placed on providing large shared spaces to enjoy together and smaller areas of retreat for all members of the family. All spaces in the house needed to maximize the extensive views across the city and Puget Sound.” thank to the huge sliding patio doors, the living spaces have a direct relationship to the outside.

Natural warmth derives from the texture of the interior plaster, use of warm woods, and patina of the concrete and steel. All this is especially noticeable in the kitchen where all the furniture is made of wood: from the kitchen cabinets to the stools to the dining table with adjacent chairs. Particular attention has been paid to the huge island with the top in white marble which offers a breakfast area of 6 seats essential for a large family. Before stepping out to the outdoor terrace, next to the dining area, a powder room was included with a minimalist but at the same time very elegant and refined style with gold accents. Always on the same level, for Sarah - a NYT 96 | G&G _ Magazine

best selling author and chef extraordinaire, the designers reserved a calm refuges to write that includes a library that houses her many books. Here, there is also a black cladding fireplace that gives a sense of both welcome and privacy to the room.

“It was important for the house to be both elegant and refined as well as withstand daily use from a family of 8 who like to entertain.”

Passing from public to private space as you ascend through the void, the transparency of the house responds by moving from open glazing to a wood slat brise-soleil, filtering sunlight and screening the interior spaces from the street. The void is flanked either side at the upper level with the kid's wing and primary wings connected by a lightweight bridge. Both wings have an active relationship to this main living space and each other whilst retaining their own privacy and character. The primary wing cantilevers dramatically out over the dining terrace and pool below. It hosts the master bedroom that offers the impressive view of the city and Puget Sound. A luxurious primary bathroom and his/hers dressing room occupy the central section of the wing while a small office is located in the northwest corner.

98 | G&G _ Magazine

“One of the driving factors in the design of the house was the almost 360 degree views from the site and the design allows these to be maximized on each of the levels.”

The kid's side functions as a bunkhouse of sorts, with 6 small bedrooms arranged around a sun-filled central play space with a large skylight above. Built-in desks and storage around the perimeter of the play space provide for the functional needs removed from the bedrooms, this allows the bedrooms to feel more spacious. The rooftop above the garage becomes an extension of the kid’s play space at this level.

STYLE In the lively neighbourhood of Sion (Mumbai) Mindspace Interiors designed an apartment focused on simplicity, natural elements, and comfort. Photography by Ruhma Ukaye

“One may expect to find a plethora of natural materials, muted colors, clean lines, and minimal, yet wellcurated, furnishings. Japandi design isn't sparse - it's intentional. We stuck to natural materials and finishes like the concrete sand wall, natural wooden rafters in the ceiling and beechwood chairs and chaise.”

104 | G&G _ Magazine

apandi – is the union of the Scandi (Scandinavian) style with the Japanese one, and that is what was chosen by Mindspace Interiors for the design of this house. The fusion of the two styles creates the perfect combination of function and form, focusing on clean lines, bright spaces and light colors. Before entering the apartment, there is a small "entrance" room which serves as a storage room where you can hang your jackets, leave your shoes etc. Once past the front door, we find ourselves in an environment characterized by beautiful craftsmanship with particular attention to quality and handmade and personalized pieces. While Japandi envisions the use of calming, quiet and peaceful palettes, the designers wanted to have an attractive entrance, so they used the humble terracotta shade of paint to show off a wooden-cane console table. Reducing clutter is also key to achieving the Japandi style. This design aesthetic focuses on clean lines and open spaces. So, the designers did not hesitate to break open the kitchen and make it one with the living room. Using natural containers such as boxes and baskets, built-ins or folding screens to hide excess stuff and keeping the space feeling clutter free one doesn’t sense the smallness of the kitchen. The dado tiles are a subtle green and add life to this japandi kitchen.

From the kitchen you can see the living room. A corner sofa, bench and coffee table in light wood were enough to create a comfortable and peaceful environment. The palette of neutral colors varies from white to pastel pink to dull blue; everything has been chosen and positioned to create the right balance. Since you can see the dark wooden beams, in order not to create 106 | G&G _ Magazine

an excessive contrast, the designers created a small protrusion inside which a piece of wood cut out with different shapes, also dark, was inserted. In front of the sofa, we find a wall with some white shelves and furniture. The whole environment is beautifully lit by a huge window. The dining area has also been positioned next to the latter.

Maintaining the use of natural wood and light colours the kids room stands out with the light sky blue on the wall to make an arch and continued the design forming arches on the wardrobe too. The single bed has a pull-out bed below it to allow one

more person to comfortably sleep. While in the master suite, the bed with rose coloured headboard and leafy wallpaper bring a sense of glamour with calmness. Two separate wardrobes for his and hers, each on two sides of the bed, have been

finished with tinted mirror shutters, certainly it is totally customized bespoke furniture. Bringing in bits of nature like the houseplant, or fresh flowers was a way to inject some life into the neutral japandi colour palette. In front of the children's room, there is the bathroom where the white terrazzo tiles with specs of natural brown, grey and black match with wood finish ones and bold fluted black washbasin. A simple wooden frame for the mirror and a few shelves in the corner to use for utilities makes it complete.
