ear Reader, We are in the middle of Autumn which gives us one of the most beautiful color palettes ever. All in warm tones and with a cosy touch! So, for this choice of Design Trends, in addition to reserving the typical colors from the season (like Adobe, Soybean rather than Olive Branch), we offer you some shades of blue. There is Spring Lake, a version of soft blue that fits perfectly into the fall palette and goes well with any other color in the selection. And then there is a strong Mykonos Blue, full of energy and enthusiasm, which reminds us of the color of the sea but at the same time, with its cold tone, reminds us that winter is upon us. Then, there are many of us who try to go beyond "tradition" and decorate the houses with more unusual touches - the ones we don't expect to find in a home during the Autumn. A sparkling yellow or a luxuriant green; many would say that they are the typical summer shades. Precisely for this reason, it is sometimes difficult to combine these off-season colors. That said, we decided to give you some tips on how to insert them through the right combination with a Mix & Match. As for example, a vibrant green can be plated with a soft gray, or how a light blue goes hand in hand with a warm brown (among other things, another color from the fall palette). I advise you not to limit yourself to experimenting with your interiors: today our homes have become more important space than they've ever been before, and it is essential to create attractive and above all stimulating spaces! If you find our inspiring combinations and create new ones, tag us #mixnmatch by #gandgmagazineeu! Finally, a series of residential projects with a decor focused on artworks, and the meaning they can take on in a room. From the sophisticated apartment in Kiev to the comfortable Spanish home to the minimalistic Victorian cottage in Melbourne. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of G&G _ Magazine!

I’m always interested in your opinion, send me any feedback or suggestions at zhanna@gandgmagazine.eu

LATEST NEWS Landscape inspired villa Peter Pichler Architecture designs a villa on vineyard in South Tyrol, North Italy, in the wonderful Alpine landscape of Termeno (renowned for being the home of the Gewürztraminer wine). The geometry of the villa evolves from local site conditions. It creates a flowing and harmonious transition with the landscape and is barely noticeable from the close village. The ribbon-like structure that emerges from the natural landscape creates an internal courtyard that offers protection from the strong wind coming from Garda Lake. The external materiality replicates the existing retaining walls from the surrounding vineyards, made of chalkstone, mirroring their same texture and color. www.peterpichler.eu

In collaboration with Ennismore Design Studio, Fettle has just completed the interiors of Beverly, a West Coast American restaurant at The Hoxton Rome with a farm-to-table ethos and Californian spirit in the heart Parioli. The studio drew on the existing aesthetic synonymous with The Hoxton brand and used the building itself and its locality as reference points for the design. The building was constructed in the 1970s and the interiors drew inspiration from mid-century Italian design, pairing this with classic architectural details found within some of the more traditional buildings in the neighbourhood. Maya Sheinberger Interior Design renovated a135 m² apartment for a young couple with two girls in Yad Eliyahu neighborhood in Tel Aviv. Photography by Itay Benit 54 | G&G _ Magazine

O

riginally, the apartment consisted of four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a guest toilet. A new interior division was required to adapt to the lifestyle of the young family, which wanted an open space with a light atmosphere and an airy, modern and bright look. The public space of the apartment is revealed from the entrance, which opens

56 | G&G _ Magazine

into the living room and has a large window facing the trees next to the building. A white iron minimalist library with thin shelves is installed on the TV wall, providing room for a TV and shelving for displays of books and ornaments. The entire space is paved with natural oak hardwood floors. A graphite gray corner sofa was placed with a black-and-white photo by Israeli photographer Ailon

Glitzenstein above it. Above the deep red carpet with its geometric ethnic pattern are two solid wood tables with different finishes, one with a natural oak finish and one with a blackened finish. Two white tracking lights were installed along with the library and the sofa. Incorporating black and mustard rattan armchairs with walnut wood added delicate touches of color to the space. The cushions were selected in natural shades and in different fabrics and textures.

58 | G&G _ Magazine

On the right side of the entrance, we find the dining area and the kitchen that were enlarged at the expense of the canceled guest restroom. Designed in an L shape, the kitchen offers the low cabinets, a sink, a dishwasher, and a stove on one side and, on the other long side, a high cabinet unit with a refrigerator, oven, and microwave. A

peninsula provides additional storage as well as seating for light meals. The finish of the kitchen cabinets are smoky gray, and the countertop is white with delicate tendrils in shades of gray. For the backsplash, hand-painted bricks were chosen in the same shade as the surface with a glossy finish and placed vertically to create a sense of higher space. A strong Lshaped recessed lighting was chosen, as well as recessed spots lights above the peninsula to compensate there is no window in the kitchen area. Dining area and kitchen are arranged in a way to maximize the available space. The designers selected a delicate oak dining table, surrounded by chairs in a natural color, and above it, a black and brass asymmetrical light fixture. The dining area features a large artwork by Israeli artist Tamar Branitzky that incorporates red and green colors.

A bedroom served as an office was reduced so that the master suite could be enlarged. It includes a wooden bed with a braided back in natural color; two metal chests in deep red color are designed to serve as nightstands and are incorporated with brass lamps. Everything is in the background of a wall painted in gray-stone hues which emphasize the bed's delicate hue. In front of the bed is a wall cabinet with white facades. Parallel to the cabinet, a white tracking light was installed, and geometric art was hung on the wall. The designers chose a rope rug and a white mesh curtain for the window. Master bathroom has an urban feel: concrete gray tiles combined with black faucets and a cabinet with natural oak veneer finish and white ceramic surface. An additional storage space is provided by the mirror cabinet above it. 60 | G&G _ Magazine

Next to the master bedroom is the children's room. A combination of white and oak furniture was chosen for it. Smoky green paint was applied to the back wall, and a white Roman curtain was chosen for the window. The space is decorated with pink textiles and a black and white carpet in the center.

62 | G&G _ Magazine

The third bedroom serves as a home office, with a wooden table and natural-colored chair. Geometric patterned rugs in natural shades of beige and brown add color and texture to the room. The floor of the main bathroom has a clean design like the rest of the apartment. It is covered with gray tiles: the walls with

rectangular white tiles that are vertically arranged, and for the sink wall, rhombuspatterned tiles in a smoky light blue color were used. Brass wall light fixtures and brushed finish taps were also selected. It features a glossy white sink surface with an oak veneer cabinet, and an over-the-sink mirror with a matching oak frame.

F

or the design of the whole apartment, Nataly Bolshakova has chosen a clean but very sophisticated style, where neutral tones blend perfectly with bright ones. And thanks to a particular attention to rich textures and details make this project another interior jewel created by the designer. As soon as you walk through the main door, you enter the spacious living area which includes a wonderful living room, dining zone, kitchen and even a study area. One cannot fail to notice the flow of natural light coming from the large windows along the entire wall that overlook the street. Even if the whole living area is a large open space without doors, each room can be distinguished through some architectural details. For example, the living room is bordered by a false ceiling and some protruding walls. Here, the minimal interiors are furnished with the Italian brand Poliform: the burgundy Mad chairs, the Creek coffee table and the Bristol sofas which, with the Hermes decorative cushions, complete the elegant look of the room. Everything is placed on a deep blue gradient carpet that brings the balance of colors to the ambiance. Adjacent to the dresser, Nataly Bolshakova also inserted a pair of Meghan floor lamps, designed by her. These are exceptional lighting pieces that perfectly combine elegance and functionality, made in Italy. Another element that should be mentioned are two interior sculptures by Nazar Bilyk that enhance the atmosphere.

66 | G&G _ Magazine

Next to the living room, we find the study area where Poliform furniture in dark wood and leather was used. These are pieces with simple and almost minimalist shapes. So also, the discreet lighting for the desk is created by the Meghan table lamp by Nataly Bolshakova. There is nothing superfluous in the office, which makes it easier for you to focus on work and reading. Near the window we find a more "intimate" corner where the Poliform armchairs in Lora Piano light fabric and the Flute coffee table designed by Roberto Barbieri for Poliform have been positioned. While on the wall a piece of art «A look into oneself» by Nazar Bilyk was hung.

On the other side of the living room, we find the dining area, also delimited by a false ceiling. The furniture follows the minimalist style, there are only the essential pieces: Midj chairs and Poliform dark wood dining table. Above the latter, there is a simple design pendant lamp by Artemide but which is an artwork in itself. 68 | G&G _ Magazine

Everything is set against the backdrop of an impressive painting by Anatoly Krivolap. The kitchen floor is bordered by light tiles with dark accents, it blends perfectly with both the beige and glossy surfaces and the dark worktop. A pair of gray bar stools accompany the ambiance and create a perfect corner for breakfast or snack.

In the bedroom, the elegant style is marked by beige tones and some dark red accents, the same present in the living

70 | G&G _ Magazine

room. Contardі curved lamps support Delavega light plump bed style. A Lora Piano terracotta blanket looks stunning beside the Poliform Sara mirror and the edging of a soft carpet from Lora Piano brings the space together. A mirrored chest of drawers exhibiting clearly defined features and dark Poliform sideboards add volume and symmetry to the bedroom. The bathroom is resplendent in contrasting black and white colors, Nataly Bolshakova opted for tiles from Atlas Concorde with a distinctive marble texture. The room is flooded with natural light that enters from the large window; under it the bathtub has been positioned which is perfect for relax time. The interior was supplemented with austere lamps from SLV and Paffoni fixtures.

URBAN OASIS

The design studio based in Madrid, Puntofilipino completed the interiors of a family house located in the coastal city of Almería, in southern Spain. Photography by Polina Parcevskya 72 | G&G _ Magazine

C

onceived as an urban oasis, this residence in Almería is inspired by the long history of artists who have traditionally sought a haven of tranquility on the Andalusian coast. Eclectically furnished as a reflection of the owners' deep-rooted passion for furniture, and including spaces for gardening, reading and meditation, the house is a paradigm of compositional delicacy, exemplifying how an urban dwelling can serve as a tranquil sanctuary. The interiors open to a vast open space consisting of a kitchen with a breakfast area, a dining room and a living room. The

74 | G&G _ Magazine

L-shaped space envelops an outdoor area that guarantees the penetration of natural light thanks to the large floor-to-ceiling windows. They allow the green views of the gardens to take center stage. Backed by a minimalist aesthetic of muted tones and clean lines, the interiors are light and airy, courtesy of high ceilings and sparse furnishings. The feel of an urban oasis is enhanced by a richly textured palette of handmade and natural materials, such as warm white plaster finishes, wooden floors and marble surfaces. The designers added a bolder turquoise for the kitchen to have some colorful accents.

76 | G&G _ Magazine

The project reflects the "vision of the family lifestyle", with the aim that the final project is "timeless and exudes a discreet luxury". With this in mind, incredible examples of designer furniture from France and Italy were playfully juxtaposed with contemporary and custom-made items, achieving the desired mark of measured sobriety. For the living room, the designers opted to add some geometric graphics and use neutral tones between black and white. One of the walls is revamped with Flash

line wallpaper by Wall&deco’s that perfectly match the carpet below. Two white Flexform corner sofas were chosen for the seats, giving a sense of comfort while the traditional Tessa chair by Flexform pays tribute to the artisan heritage. A series of bronze fixtures, including pendant lights and modernist sconces by Emmanuelle Simon as sculptural highlights, infuses the home with exuberance. The result of such a thoughtful and meticulous design process is a residence of timeless sophistication that nonetheless feels fresh and modern.

Between the bedroom and the living room, the bathroom and walk-in closet have been wedged - this gives a greater sense of privacy in the sleeping area. Like the rest of the house, this room follows a sober and minimalist design. The main wall is covered with Midsummer might wallpaper, also by Wall&deco; next to this we find Lambert Richard Wrightman's bed with a simple design accompanied by a bench with an olive green upholstery. A combination of minimalist, richly textured and exquisitely detailed interiors, makes this house a perfect place to live!

FLEXIBLE SPACE Michael K Chen Architecture (MKCA) has designed the architectural renovation and interiors of a 4.000-square-foot apartment for a family of five on Park Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Photography by Max Burkhalter

80 | G&G _ Magazine

ES

T

he apartment has been reorganized to adapt to the lives of a busy New York family, while preserving and accentuating the inherent grandeur of the space. MKCA reshaped the apartment’s plan to optimize circulation and the seamless transformation of the home from a series of private, independent spaces into an interconnected, spacious landscape where the family of five can gather together as well as entertain guests. This layout hinges on a pinwheel-shaped circulation zone at the apartment’s core, which includes a central elevator landing, formal entrance gallery, and kitchen. Movement through these areas creates multiple opportunities

to access the apartment’s living spaces, including the commodious formal living room, dining room/library, den, and bedrooms, all which encircle the core. The doors can be pivoted and slid away, and rooms can be deliberately reconfigured as needed, affording space for the family to spend time together, which they describe as a high priority, while also allowing for independent activities. This strategy is introduced upon entering the apartment from the elevator, where a full-height entry door is engineered to be held open on its pivoting hinge, and a wall between the entrance vestibule and kitchen is designed to slide away, creating free circulation around the elevator core.

“The regulated fluidity of circulation allows for sprawl across multiple rooms, while also celebrating and activating the formal gallery space, which is such a hallmark of a classic Park Avenue apartment.” - Michael K Chen

In the kitchen, a muscular island with hefty stone legs is set against ribbed walnut paneling. Its worktop - a mix of Cristallo and Ice Grey marble, blends perfectly with the rest of the room . Above it, a “Coax” pendant by John Hogan for Roll and Hill has been placed while some black stools with gold finishes give a touch of elegance.

“Porosity between the dining area/library and living room means that people slip in and out of the rooms with ease. It’s a space for casual family meals, reading, hanging out, playing games; and it’s also a space for dramatic, largescale, formal entertaining.” - Michael K Chen 84 | G&G _ Magazine

In keeping with MKCA’s overarching practice, the studio has designed and commissioned custom furniture across the home, with each piece bolstering the project’s emphasis on mutability, tactility, and elegance. Particular emphasis is placed on the dining room and library fused into one. The furniture anchoring this room transforms depending on the scenario: the banquette breaks apart into chairs, a custom chandelier by Ladies and Gentlemen Studio swivels, and the dining table expands. The latter is the result of an ongoing collaboration between MKCA and Christopher Kurtz, the Hudson Valley-based sculptor and designer. The piece features an undulating, carved aluminum top fused to a rippling underlayer and base in oxidized cherry.

Through the folding doors, the dining room leads to the living room. Here, Kurtz’s custom carved wood sconces are enveloped within the thickened wall around the fireplace and glow gently through an integrated LED array. While the game tables and chairs resemble stacks of “pebbles” made from a mix of woods (oak, walnut, maple, cherry) and metals (aluminum and bronze). These are paired with a “Merrick” daybed by MKCA covered in a graphic chenille by Castel, a custom sofa by KGBL, covered in a Holland and Sherry wool jacquard, and "Tsunami" coffee table in heat treated steel and glass by Kin & Company. Additionally, a pair of vintage Gio Ponti stools and a customised "Fracture" rug by Fernando Mastrangelo through Edward Fields accent the space.

Across the residence, each of MKCA’s architectural and interior interventions point back to the project’s original motivation: to transform the space into a fluid, elegant modern home while also making daring architectural and aesthetic choices. As for example, the media room is characterized by the use of dark tones and eccentric details. The walls have a “Kintsugi” wall covering hand painted by Porter Teleo in a dark blue-gray color with gold pigments. Thanks to two large windows, natural light is guaranteed. The furniture is marked by soft curves like the L-shaped sofa by Poliform. In the center of the room, 86 | G&G _ Magazine

a customized MKCA pouf in leather, walnut and glass was placed. Above it, we find Bec Brittain's “Maxihedron” hanging pendant for Roll and Hill. Another ambiance with an amazing design is the powder room where a stone vanity in figural Cassiopeia marble is the protagonist. In additional, MKCA have made an interesting architectural choice by making the curved Venetian plaster walls with LED cove lighting. The design is completed with opulent lighting from Lindsey Adelman's 2 gold-trimmed wall lights and a custom Kin and Company bronze mirror.

“From the very beginning, these were clients who asked us to take them outside of their comfort zone. The couple had very clear ideas about how they wanted to live, and how certain rooms should function, but were interested in an approach and an aesthetic that was more adventurous and expressive, but not kooky.”

In the main bedroom, silk and sisal wallcoverings join a custom upholstered bed in walnut and boucle and a custom silk carpet, both designed by MKCA. The draperies are made from a custom loomed textile in wool, silk, and mohair by Hiroko Takeda. Articulated brass reading lighting by Gentner Design with its curves, is a very interesting detail in this room. Near to the window, we find the lounge chair sourced from Studio Twenty-Seven, covered in Loro Piana olive oil colored silk velvet, and wool boucle from Elitis. The en-suite bathroom has also the warm tones: it is enveloped in rosy Venetian plaster, pink Byzantine onyx, and Calacatta Vagli Rosato marble.

For the teenage children, a playroom has been reserved where they can spend time together. It's a hangout zone and TV space, with hand-printed wallcovering and a graphic carpet with a custom shape. Comfortable and modern seats were crucial in the choice of furnishings: a deep blue sofa by Hem and the vibrant lounge chair and poufs by Moroso. A hidden door has also been inserted leading to the laundry.

he owners, a couple and two children, bought the property some years back for the house’s heritage charm and separate rear laneway studio; prefect for the artist owner and visiting extended family. Over time the family outgrew the cottage with two front bedrooms and a living room at the rear that was cut off from the garden by a series of lean-to add-ons that housed kitchen, laundry and bathroom amenities. The brief for this project was to provide a separate kids area, a larger integrated living area that connected to the outdoors, new modern amenities, and to introduce much needed natural light and volume on what is a very tight site. It was also imperative that the renovation addressed the damp subfloor conditions and improved the overall environmental responsiveness of the original house. In addition to the functional brief was the owners desire to retain the rawness of character of the terrace cottage. It was vital to the owners that new works were not

soulless additions, that the architects add a sense of individuality to their home, include some heirloom pieces, and avoided conventional cabinetry. On the ground floor the verandah, front entry and main bedroom with a fireplace had its original cottage character retained and restored. The second bedroom was converted into a combined bathroom laundry while still retaining the room’s heritage proportions and features. This was achieved by inserting shaped tiled partitions to create different zones, rather than carving up the room with full height walls. The shower and laundry are concealed behind an arched vanity wall, which references and addresses the original brick fireplace. Small mosaic tiles with terracotta grout and the imperfection of existing brickwork add texture and boldness to this simple compact space.

Beyond the original front rooms is the new open plan kitchen, which was formerly the living room. The richness of terracotta and terrazzo combined with black steel framing and ply detailing. The owners opted for open shelving and exposed fixtures, rather than conventional cabinetry, complimenting their desire for a flexible uncomplicated living arrangement. The kitchen consists of custom prefabricated steel frames and ply shelving made on site

by the builder, eliminating the need for a conventional cabinet maker. Another retained original brick fireplace is the threshold into the new dining and living areas beyond. It is at this point that the house celebrates old and new, rough and smooth, dark and light. The homes history is displayed through retained rough textured brickwork located throughout the space, contrasting against crisp new plaster walls and polished concrete floors.

The architects introduced a first floor that could accommodate the kids’ bedrooms and bathroom, but just as importantly, provide void spaces that would allow Northern and Western light to penetrate the lower floor living spaces. The tight site and planning conditions informed the sharp asymmetrical roofline resulting in a soaring peaked internal ceiling. An abundance of natural light refracting off all white interiors creates a sense of the ethereal hidden amongst the urban grain. Externally, the first-floor addition peeks subtly above existing undulating rooflines from the rear laneway and is entirely invisible from the front heritage façade. A triangular gap between old and new rooflines provided opportunity to bring Northern light into the lower floors via a light void. This aperture acts as a sun dial projecting a triangular beam of light across the walls throughout the day. With the owners’ desire for raw character the first-floor addition structure was designed to be on display. Timber floor joists are exposed and structural steel beams frame void openings. The architects opted for some cost-saving measures which led to opportunities for bold interventions. An off the shelf staircase was emboldened with Dulux 'Simply Terracotta' which tied in the terracotta tiles and grout featured elsewhere in the interiors. The upstairs bedroom floors were simply sheeted and painted with Dulux 'Asparagus Sprig' for a fresh and playful effect.

LIVING IN WARM TONES Sandra Benhamou designed the interiors of an apartment for a couple of the art and design collectors in Paris.

he 120 m² apartment is located in a 1970’s building facing the green area of Bois de Boulogne on Paris west side. It has been projected as a big single room with a kitchen open on a living room on one side and 2 rooms with their own bathroom on the other side. The custom designed kitchen has a simple and very accurate design. The natural wood used for both its cabinets and the floor gives a graphic style through its lines. As island has been positioned that acts as a worktop and defines the space between the kitchen and dining area. Above it we find an elegant pendant lamp in copper finish that blends perfectly with the color of the kitchen. For the dining zone, the iconic Saarinen dining table was chosen which,

with a single leg with soft curves, is a true triumph of art and sculpture. A touch of modern is given by Hans Wegner's CH23 chairs with clean and organic contours. As customers are passionate about art, one piece to note is a painting by Camille Henrot. Below it we also find a Jenny Holzer bench and the African Ngbaka figurine from Galerie Lucas Ratton. Next to it there is a large window that floods the room with natural light while the white curtains guarantee privacy.

The living room is a real gem of the house. On the one hand we find the warm brown sofa that "softens" the environment even more with its welcoming curves. On the other side, near a large window, there are two armchairs designed by Sandra Benhamou, also always in brown shades. In the center of the room, a marvelous coffee table has been placed that gives a touch of luxury. Above the sofa, a painting by Pierre Malbec has been hung which, with its bright colors of green and red, differs from the rest of the color palette. The décor was completed by a series of home accessories such as the green wool plaid by Jules et Jim, the cushions, the small sculptural objects, but above all the large black and white carpet by Sandra Benhamou. As far as lighting is concerned, there was no need to include lamps as there is also a large window here which guarantees a bright environment. A floor lamp by Gallery Glustin has been placed which looks like another artwork. 104 | G&G _ Magazine

Like the rest of the house, the bedroom is awash in warm tones and the abundant use of wood. The wardrobes and the bookcase, always made to measure, are positioned on one side to give a homogenous style to the environment. Sandra Benhamou has given a strong weight to the textures: the bed in light beige tones as well as the bed linen give a greater sense of warmth while a plaid with

its mix of colors is a playful element of the room. Among the works of art, there are the "Normal Desires" lithograph in black and white, the painting by Gideon Rubin above the bed and the applique from the Glustin Gallery. On the opposite side of the door window, a mirror framed in wood has been positioned that reflects natural light, guaranteeing the points of light in every part of the room.
