Red Angus
Our Cattle Work for Us – Let Their Offspring Work for You In 1976 when I was shopping for my first cow, my Dad advised me to buy Angus because they were easier to look after. I was in school, and my parents ran a business, so everyone needed to sleep at night, and everyone was gone during most of the day. I fondly remember a year when my 4-H heifer popped out a water bag just as we were leaving for my public speaking competition. It did not seem bizarre to us to simply leave and come home later that evening to see what she had! Over the years I learned that not all Angus are created equal, but my ideals remained steadfast. This has proved invaluable over the years. As we all know – life happens. I am so proud of our cows. Whether it was the January when Kailey decide to be born 2 ½ months early, or on the weekends when I’m at the kids’ hockey games, or spending time with a family member at a hospital; when someone asks, “Who’s looking after the cows?” I can answer, “The cows are looking after themselves.” With the implementation of cameras in our barns and pens, we now routinely watch our cows calve from the comfort of the living room or from the slumber of our bedroom, watching the calves get up and nurse soon after. One thing that I want to make clear, it’s not about low birth weight calves. It’s about how the cattle are made, about their will to survive, the maternal instincts, and their ability to do their job in a no-nonsense manner that makes our family’s life safe and enjoyable. This not only applies during calving season but throughout the entire year, and then they must consistently do this year after year. On March 9th we will have bulls available to assist your life in the cattle business, bulls backed by multi-generations of proven genetics. Our bulls are bred and fed to last. Good boned, good haired, good tempered bulls with Muscle, Performance, Maternal Power, and Calving Ease. You are more than welcome to come any day ahead of time to look through the bulls. Once again, we will have some excellent crossbred replacement females consigned by our customers. Brad & Christine Tymkow will have some black open heifers, Jay & Robin Booth will have red open heifers, and Wayne & Anita McNary will have a consignment of blue Roan females both open and breds. As always, come for the cattle, but please be prepared to stay for the post sale festivities. We will host a steak dinner followed by an evening of entertainment and dancing performed by the band “Hansen Jeans”. We welcome your appraisal of our cattle and look forward to visiting with you March 9th.

Using Yearling Bulls
We firmly believe in the use of yearling bulls and feel that it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and introduce to the herd and their only concern is breeding cows. When yearling bulls are managed appropriately they will perform better over time than bulls purchased as two- year-olds. Here are some guidelines for care of your yearling bulls:
• Upon arrival at your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5 - 8 lbs of grain or pellets and free choice of hay. Then reduce the amount of grain so they are on straight hay or grass two weeks prior to turn out. • Where possible try to limit the bulls to 45 - 60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time remove them and put them in a separate pasture with plenty of grass or good quality hay. • A winter feeding ration of 3 - 5 lbs of grain or pellets plus free choice hay will put the bulls in condition and allow them to grow and develop. You will also benefit by one and probably two or more years of use out of a well-managed and healthy bull purchased as a yearling.
Canadian Angus Elite Cows
Minimum of five calves, four of which must be registered, to determine her regularity of calving and ability to consistently produce calves with a superior weaning weight year after year, display early puberty, breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving and high performance offspring. The Canadian Angus Elite Cow Report identifies superior cows in the Canadian Angus herdbook.

All of them have been low BW bulls with great performance. This one comes with a 79 lb BW. The 4 sons have an average of 81 lbs, so this is no accident. The other sons have sold to Cory Nottingham, Jim Hansen and Shane & Jeff Boulerice. The sire BCC Bold 16B was used on our own heifers for 2 years with 100% unassisted calving. This young bull’s grand dam produced 14 calves of which 5 were bulls, averaging 80 lbs at birth, so it’s no fluke that this guys BW EPD ranks in the top 10% of the breed.

Commercial Heifers
Commercial heifers
Over the years Brandl Cattle Co. bull customers have been sourced as suppliers of some of the top commercial replacement females in the area. We are pleased to include some of these top genetics for your appraisal.
A – Brad & Christine Tymkow 5 (Black Angus X Open Heifers)
We are a mixed farm consisting of 1800 acres of cropland and 125 Black Angus cows. We started farming in 1994 and got into the beef business in 1997 with the purchase of 11 Black Angus heifer calves. It was a steep learning curve the first few years, and we still continue to learn new things today. We are trying to produce functional females with eye appeal. While doing this, they need to be maternal, have good disposition, good feet and udders with some longevity built in. We keep planning to improve our herd and our farm by trying new things here and there to increase profit. As we all know the cost of production never seems to go down.
B – Wayne McNary & Anita Martens
4 (Blue Roan Shorthorn x Angus Open Heifers) At our ranch here in Thorhild, we have built a cow base of Shorthorn-cross cows which produce a predominantly blue calf crop. Our Black Angus genetics have come from top angus bulls such as BCC Premium Edition 47U and BCC Castlerock 101D. Both are leaders in performance with excellent growth stats. Our cows are easy calving, good milkers, and are very efficient at the feed pile. They mature at 1275 to 1350 lbs. We have carefully, with much debate, selected these heifers from top cows from the herd. They are forage raised and born in the first cycle with closely related bloodlines.

5 (Black Simmental x Angus Open Heifers) Booth Land & Cattle began our cowherd in 2001 with the purchase of a group of cows from Sunny Hills Ranch in Kamloops as well as a group from Felstad Farms at Dapp and two Black Angus bulls from Brandl Cattle Co. Today the cowherd numbers are more than 440, and we are cropping 1800 acres of grain land. There is approximately 15 quarters of pasture and hay land. With this work load, we must have trouble-free, productive, no-nonsense cattle. We select for performance, with heavy weaning weights being a top priority. The majority of our cattle are Angus x Simmental cross.
