castindoncaster.com 01302 303959
to the Spring/ Summer Season In September 2013, Cast opened its inaugural production The Glee Club to a packed house with the smell of freshly dried paint and newly laid carpets still in the air. Seven years on, the team behind the sellout Rita Sue and Bob Too (Out of Joint) collaborate with Cast to bring us back to Edlington once again as the singing miners prepare for their all-important Gala. In 2020, The Glee Club (page 12) is just as hilarious and more relevant than ever; a community divided, a government in crisis, toxic masculinity - oh and a singing drag queen, no lip syncing here! Indeed, collaboration is the theme of this season’s work with no less than eight productions co-produced or supported by Cast. We’re thrilled to support No Horizon, a brand-new Yorkshire musical which brings to life the inspiring true story of academic Nicholas Saunderson, who redefined the possibilities for a blind man of his day. Spring/Summer sees the return of many well-loved companies to the theatre. Red Ladder tour their new play Smile Club and Undermined is back for a second stint to tell real life stories from the Miner’s strikes. We welcome back fingersmiths (who brought us Up ‘n’ Under in 2017) rework contemporary classic My Mother Said I Never Should in British Sign Language and spoken English. Scratch Nights in February and June also provide a platform for local artists to try out their latest material on an audience for the first time.
Cast is the home of great nights out, so among our thriving entertainment programme we’re delighted to welcome superstars of comedy Count Arthur Strong (p3), David Baddiel (p8), Josh Widdicombe (p32) and Strictly’s Chris Ramsey (p27) to our stage. As we look ahead to the summer months, The Royal Ballet bring their mixed programme alongside a truly large-scale ambitious youth event in June. Our close partners The National Theatre tour their production of Romeo and Julie in June, followed by the world premiere of their production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle starring 100 local people alongside a professional cast and live band.

Now cruelly forgotten by history, Saunderson sought to make the impossible possible. No eyes. No braille. No hope. It is 1682. Rejected at every turn, his brilliance surfaces. Set against the contrasting earthiness of Yorkshire and the dreaming spires of Cambridge, No Horizon is a tale of courage, aspiration, passion and achievement in the face of great adversity. Directed by Andrew Loretto (Director of Hat Fair, Play to the Crowd, Winchester) and with movement direction by Lucy Cullingford (RSC, West End) and Balbir Singh, it features stunning and emotive music. This epic story seeks to re-establish Saunderson in his rightful place as a national icon. Tickets £17 (£10 Under 26) | Main Space In the late 18th century, the owners of the Zong ship attempted to claim insurance on the lives of the 130 slaves that they threw overboard. Over 100 years later the Kala Pani prison was used by British colonial forces to incarcerate Indian freedom fighters who spoke out against the regime. Inspired by these two narratives – Black Waters will present audiences with a wider exploration of how British colonial forces commodified people for gain, and as a consequence, saw a blending of cultures and the birth of fragmented identities for whom home has always remained a contested space. Placing multiculturalism at its heart, the piece promises to be an emotionally evocative and culturally relevant production, which shows how from despair, people find value, inspiration and hope.
