Shared experiences make wonderful memories, and this season we welcome you to make those memories at Cast. There’s so much to share, from the Paines Plough pop-up theatre tent Roundabout, filled with a selection of new plays that speak urgently to our present, and work from local artists and theatre makers to a landmark gala performance from the Royal Ballet – the only UK performance outside London – brought to us as part of a three-year partnership with the Royal Opera House and Doncaster Council. There are so many highlights from the season, including Unfortunate - a new musical about Ursula the Sea Witch, not to mention plenty of new writing in the Second Space. We’re also celebrating Black History Month with The King of Reggae, and a celebration event created by the Inclusion and Fairness Forum in collaboration with BME United and Making Space. Also, our National Theatre Public Acts production of The Doncastrian Chalk Circle – with over 70 community performers – finally comes to the stage this August Bank Holiday. There are plenty of other ways to get involved at Cast this season. There’s our Play Reading Club for all ages, our Scriptworks workshops for new and experienced writers, and, for those who’d like to give it a try, our regular Youth Theatre is back, with new groups added to create more
spaces and to broaden the offer for young people with disabilities. We’re continuing our work to engage with the very youngest audiences, in our Hello Baby Café Mornings, as well as our oldest, with our new Sing Along Dementia Friendly Musical films. The autumn season is jam-packed with music and entertainment, plus get ready for a lot of laughs with the truly brilliant improvised musical from Improbable Theatre, and our outstanding comedy line-up! Cast is also expanding our offer for artists this season, with the return of our Scratch Night, and a regular Doncaster Creatives Network meeting for those in Doncaster currently making work. We’re more excited than ever to have our theatre filled with families and young people this coming season. From The Tales of Acorn Wood and Baby Bear in the autumn, followed by a magical Christmas with the story of Me – a wonderful first-time theatre adventure for little ones – and, of course, our annual showstopping pantomime. This year’s show is Sleeping Beauty, and it promises more laughter and love than ever! Whatever you decide to come and see, just know that you’re always welcome at Cast.

Sat 27 - Mon 29 Aug 7pm, 2pm Mon £15 (£9 Under 26) | Main Space PLAY/DRAMA
A heartrending and gripping tale of the families we choose, filled with passion, hope and plenty of Yorkshire grit and humour. In a divided community, our reluctant hero, Grusha, risks everything to rescue an abandoned baby and raise him as her own. When the child’s aristocratic mother returns to claim him, a rogue judge devises a unique test to determine their fate and who will be the rightful mother. Searing and celebratory, this new version of Brecht’s classic The Caucasian Chalk Circle, is adapted for this project by Chris Bush, with music by Ruth Chan. The Doncastrian Chalk Circle sees the National Theatre join forces with the people of Doncaster as part of its Public Acts programme to create a community musical on an epic scale, featuring a cast of over 100 local performers, alongside a professional company and live band.

A cautionary fairy tale for our time. It celebrates the wisdom of the witch, unpacks the notion of predator and conjures a world of coven-ready weird sisters. Using buffoonery, puppetry and magic, and armed with a ‘wiccan’ sense of humour, Witch Hunt asks, “Can we use witchcraft to take down the patriarchy?” Yes we can!

The world is a very big place, especially for a tiny baby penguin who is just finding her feet. The shimmering stars and glistening snow spin around our little hero, while the mountains tower high and the wind rushes to and fro. And although baby penguin may be small her family know she’s the biggest thing of all. This early years favourite is a lovely and touching story about a parent’s love for their child. A Little Angel Theatre production based on the book by Emma Dodd published by The Templar Company Limited. “Beautifully heart-warming...an ideal introduction to theatre for little people” The Stage “Obscenely adorable” Time Out
