Mount Athos Area Halkidiki …says “Kalimera” to the Belgian market!
Who we are
Mount Athos Area Organization was founded at the initiative of representatives of the hotel and tourism family, from the third peninsula of Hakidiki, aiming to the touristic, cultural, financial enhancement/promotion of this area. Nowadays it has 1004 members, and the members register has been enriched by businessmen who activate in various sectors, associating with tourism, culture, sports, trade, economy and development.
The destination
Three hundred (300) whole kilometres of coastline (the largest in Chalkidiki), more than 100 beaches, 17 bleu flags eco label (the first Greek destination), numerous of coasts, bays, islands, crystal waters, golden plains, lush mountains, all sited wisely and in harmony!
The global uniqueness
All the above mentioned scenery is surrounded by 3 mountains, so Mount Athos Area is blessed with great natural beauty, but it is not only about fantastic scenery. It is also a destination with great history and four unique points that can only be found in this area. 1. The ‘Holy Mountain’, is the only alive religious monument in the world, where the avaton law is still applied. 2. The area is also the birthplace of Aristotelis, the greater philosopher of Greek history. 3. The Canal of Xerxes, where Xerxes the King of Persians cut a canal across the peninsula for his ships to pass to Europe. 4. The famous Mademohoria that during the Ottoman period of time exchanged their freedom for the minerals of their land with the Turks.
The “summer” face
The summer in the Mount Athos Area lasts six (6) full months. On its coasts, somebody can enjoy all kinds of summer vacations: • in organized beaches, for those who love a cosmopolitan atmosphere • in pristine beaches for the more adventurous, • in quiet beaches - suitable for family holidays • in its countless creeks for the romantics, • in camping beaches for those who love to stop overnight where their mood takes them - in picturesque fishing harbours, suitable for fishing tourism. The thousands of travelers, who visit it every year, love its incomparably clear seas, its golden beaches, its water and sand sports, its fishing grounds, its traditional harbours bathed in Mediterranean light, the sunsets on its beaches overlooking the Aegean and much more... Of course, they really go for a swim at its 100 beaches, of which the 17 have been certified with blue flags eco label. The region of Athos is the refiog with the most blue flags on a national level: Ammouliani is the only inhabited island of Halkidiki, a green, picturesque, summer-time island, full of great beaches for every taste! The ferry boats leave from the port of Tripiti many times during the day.
1. The trails The area has several hiking trails along the coast and on Aristotle’s mountain, which is protected by the EU treaty Natura 2000. There are also numerous biking trails. Each route is connected to an international historical uniqueness: •Mount Athos and the Byzantine Empire, • Philosopher Aristotle - tutor to Alexander the Great, •The Persian wars of antiquity, •The Ottoman period Mamedochoria. This is the difference between walking / biking routes around the world and those in the region around Athos: each one takes visitors to different historical eras and creates an immediate contact with the historical evidence and archaeological findings, thus turning walking - apart from a mere natureloving activity - to a historical tour through monuments and sites with museum value and identity!
