with the strokes of a paintbrush or the click of a camera, we have the opportunity to immortalize our world's wonders and inspire change
History of Plein Air on Catalina Island Plein air painting is the practice of painting in the landscape. The technique was brought to the forefront of popular culture by French Impressionists and derives its name from the French term “en plein air” or “in the open air.” Artists of this era were well-equipped to capture the beauty of nature beyond the studio with portable easels and paint in packaged tubes. As the movement spread, many painters found their way to Catalina Island, creating works that cover decades of the Island’s natural history. Plein air painting reached its peak on Catalina around 1925. By the 1950s, other techniques had become more prominent and the plein air approach fell out of favor. Plein air painting began to flourish again on the Island in 1986, when local Southern California artist Denise Burns invited friends to Avalon to paint amid the many natural landscapes found on Catalina. In 2011, the Conservancy launched Catalina: The Wild Side. This new program brought nationally renowned plein air artists to Catalina Island to paint in this technique, bringing attention to the thousands of acres of wildlands that the Conservancy stewards, as well as to the communities of Avalon and Two Harbors. The artwork in this online exhibition demonstrates Catalina Island’s unique landscapes in natural beauty. TM
The Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show and Sale celebrates the wonders of nature and the importance of conservation. We believe that art is a catalyst for change, a medium to express the intrinsic value of our environment. Together, we can raise awareness, foster appreciation, and advocate for the preservation of precious Catalina Island. Art has an undeniable power to awaken our senses and kindle our connection with the natural world. It allows us to capture the essence of gorgeous landscapes and rare species, enabling us to appreciate and protect the beauty that surrounds us. Through my previous work at National Geographic and The New Yorker, I learned that
Let us paint a brighter, more sustainable future. With artistic anticipation,
Whitney Latorre President & CEO Catalina Island Conservancy Additionally, over time their images will remind us of the changes on the landscape. Art can be a useful companion for the appreciation of the landscape of Catalina as well as representing the conservation work of the Conservancy. We are thrilled you are here to enjoy the work of these amazing artists and I hope you will take a painting home, knowing that the funds raised here help fund our conservation, education and recreation programs.
Welcome to the 13th Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show and Sale, where many of the unique features of the Island are beautifully represented by the these 10 nationally recognized artists. In their plein air and studio paintings we can relive our own experiences on the Island or perhaps be inspired to seek out new locations.
Help us make a difference. Warmly,
Victoria Seaver Dean Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show, Chair

Joe Paquet MINNESOTA
Joe Paquet’s philosophy is one rooted in deep connection and sensitivity to his subjects. He says, “Because I work directly from nature, each painting is a chunk of my life – a piece of me and record of my experience on this earth.” Now living in St. Paul, Minnesota, Joe was born in Patterson, New Jersey, to hard-working parents of immigrant stock. His childhood was one of being outdoors: wondering, wandering, and daydreaming. “It’s a great irony to now get paid for those things which got me into trouble when I was a kid,” Joe remarks. He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and credits artist-instructors John Foote, David Palladini, James McMullan with inspiring his deep love of drawing. Later he studied with John Phillip Osborne in Ridgewood, New Jersey and was introduced to the Prismatic Palette. Joe states, “John opened a new world for me and set me on a path to painting outdoors – it was incredibly life changing.” Joe was the subject of the October 1995 Washington Post Sunday Magazine feature article. He has also been featured in the March 2004 issue of American Artist and the July 2005 issue of Plein Air Magazine. A recipient of myriad awards, he is also an Artist member of the Salmagundi Club, a Signature member of the California Art Club and an Emeritus member of Plein Air Painters of America.
