News Briefs

Farewell Meade Gougeon Meade Alger Gougeon, a sailing legend and industry innovator who pioneered the use of epoxies for boatbuilding, died Sunday, August 27. He was 78. On Saturday, a day before his death, the Great Lakes Multihull Regatta was held on the Saginaw Bay, near Gougeon’s Killarney Beach home. This was a Gougeon Brothers-sponsored event, but Meade was not able to participate this year because he recently became very sick. The race committee moved Saturday’s start of the race from its usual point to the waterfront area at Meade Gougeon’s house, as a personal tribute to him. Meade was brought to the front windows of his home so he could see all the boats lined up and watch the start of the race. The boats in this year’s race included Meade’s own famous trimaran Adiago and Ollie, a trimaran designed by his brother Jan. One

4

of Meade’s sons, and a son-in-law, were a part of Adiago’s crew. On Sunday afternoon, at the award presentation, it was announced that Meade has just passed away earlier in the afternoon. Though Meade was an avid multihull sailor, ice boater, cyclist, and had a notable racing career which included finishing first in the Bayview-Mackinac Race in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2016 aboard Adiago; placing first in his class in the Everglades Challenge in 2014 and 2017 aboard sailing outrigger canoes; winning the US Championship in 1981 and 1997 aboard iceboats with the International DN Ice Yacht Racing, Gougeon was perhaps best known for his marine epoxy. Meade, along with his brothers Jan and Joel, founded Gougeon Brothers, Inc. in 1969. Their employee-owned, ISO 9001 registered com-

pany is a world renowned formulator and manufacturer of WEST SYSTEM® and PRO-SET® epoxies. The brothers pioneered the use of epoxy in boat construc-

tion and repair. They got their start building DN class iceboats with wood and epoxy. Initially, the brothers obtained access to Dow Chemical’s nearby laboratories to develop an epoxy that could be used for coating and bonding. In 1970, Meade launched Adagio – the first large, all epoxy bonded and sealed wooden boat built without the use of fasteners. He’d built her with his brother Jan in just six months. She’s been sailing on the Great Lakes ever since. Adagio is proof that fully bonded monocoque structures can be built not just to last, but to be serious competitors for generations. By 1973, the brothers’ small boat shop in Bay City, Michigan was the largest builder of iceboats in the United States. Even so, in 1974 they sold the DN portion of their business to focus on soft water boats and their burgeoning epoxy business. NASA’s Wind Energy Project Office had Gougeon Brothers manufacture epoxy-laminated wood specimens for testing the strength of an epoxy bond between a threaded steel rod and a laminated wood specimen. The company’s samples were so strong that they

broke NASA’s testing machine. GBI would go on to manufacture wood/epoxy wind turbine blades for several years. In 1979, Meade wrote “The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction,” which has become the bible for boatbuilders around the world. This famous boatbuilding guide details composite construction techniques using wood and epoxy. The First Iranian-Built Catamaran Hits the Water Iran has recently completed and delivered its first catamaran to Turkey. Hossein Qorbani, managing director of Iran’s Arvandan Shipbuilding Company, which built the vessel, said one of the key features of the Iranian-made catamaran is that it is able to sail into shallow waters, at about two meters deep. At a speed of 30 knots (55 km/h), the vessel is also able to travel in bad weather, Qorbani added. Each catamaran takes about 12 to 18 months to build, but Iranian builders are able to bring the period down to eight months, the official said.

6

According to Qorbani, France’s Bureau Veritas has certified the quality of the vessel’s hull. Iran has a sprawling shipbuilding industry, chiefly devoted to constructing oil tankers and container ships as well as offshore structures. The country owns the world’s largest fleet of oil supertankers consisting of 42 VLCCs, each able to carry 2 million barrels of oil. With the removal of US-led sanctions on Iran in January 2016, the Islamic Republic plans to expand its container fleet in order to extend its forward coverage beyond all frontiers. After the sanctions were lifted, officials said the country was in talks with major world shipbuilders, including South Korea’s Hyundai and Germany’s Nordic Yards Wismar, to carry out a series of grand projects. Iran’s biggest operator, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), was putting out orders for Triple E vessels capable of carrying more than 18,000 containers, its chairman Mohammad Saeidi said. IRISL’s current fleet includes 158 container vessels, dry bulk carriers and tankers which are expected to return to international traffic in early 2016. Another official said preliminary agreements had been signed with Korean, German and Chinese shipbuilders to construct high-tech LNG tankers as the country pushes to join the club of liquefied natural gas exporters. OutboardView Marine Outboard Engine Monitoring and Fuel Efficiency App OutboardView is a new app from Digital Yacht designed to allow a smartphone or tablet to display engine data and calculate optimum efficiency. Fuel economy while boating is a major consideration with a modern 300 HP outboard consuming around 100 l/ph at wide-open throttle. Small changes to trim or RPM can make a massive difference to the optimum economy plus sea state and weather are also variables, which constantly impact the “sweet spot” Most modern outboards are now fitted with a NMEA 2000 interface. Digital Yacht have developed an Android phone and tablet app called OutboardView designed to show all the current engine parameters such as RPM, boat speed, oil temp and pressure as well as calculating optimum

fuel economy with an easy to understand trim gauge – make your trim and rpm adjustments and get a realtime view of fuel efficiency. It’s designed to integrate with Digital Yacht’s iKommunicate NMEA to Signal K gateway so data can easily be picked up from the NMEA 2000 backbone. The system can use speed data from either the boat’s navigation

system or from the GPS, which is built into the phone or tablet. On many engine based systems, speed comes from a paddle-wheel, which can be inaccurate especially at high speeds so the use of GPS speed readings provides a much more reliable solution. OutboardView is available to download on the Google Play Store. It costs £11.99/$14.99 and further details on the iKommunicate general purpose NMEA to Signal K interface are at www. digitalyachtamerica.com MM

New Boat

QUAD 44 uad Marine is introducing a radically new catamaran that finally eliminates the flaws of traditional designs, and delivers an unprecedented combination of performance, safety, and comfort.

Q

18

A decade ago Tesla Motors introduced its first production vehicle and the electric revolution was born. Today, Quad Marine brings the revolution to the marine industry with the introduction of the Quad 44, a groundbreaking electric catamaran. The Quad 44 offers much more than just an alternative to outdated internal combustion engine propulsion. We’ve identified the design flaws and usability problems of traditional catamarans, discarded old ways of thinking, and devised innovative new solutions. The result is a totally new design that’s fundamentally superior to traditional catamarans, with dramatically improved performance, safety, and accommodation space. We invite you to explore our web site and discover why the Quad 44 is the most advanced four-cabin cruising catamaran in the world! MULTIHULLS Magazine | September/October 2017

1. The groundbreaking raised-cabin design of the Quad 44 allows the lower hulls to be optimized for performance, with a narrow beam of only 4 feet that substantially reduces drag and increases speed. The upper main hull is optimized for passenger accommodation, with an astonishing 40% more interior space than typical catamarans. The four raised cabins are isolated from wave noise and cold water for a very comfortable cruising experience.

2. The lower hulls have a freeboard of only 2 feet, allowing easy and safe boarding from a side dock with no need for boarding stairs. Access to the central raised hull is through entry doors on both sides of the boat. Once the day’s cruising destination is reached, the twin hulls serve as spacious recreation decks for sunning, swimming, or fishing.

3. The main hull encloses the four staterooms and saloon in an efficient aerodynamic design to minimize drag over and under the boat. The unique profile also reduces the effect of high crosswinds that may be encountered on the open ocean.

4. The buoyancy of the central hull is separated from the lower hulls. Wave crests pass over the lower hulls without impeding the boat’s progress, and pitching and rolling is reduced. The under side of the main hull is designed to diminish wave impacts and noise in heavy seas.

5. The Quad 44 is powered by clean, silent, and maintenance-free electric drive units on each of the lower hulls. High-capacity battery banks are located within the twin hulls where they are isolated from the passenger space. Dual solar arrays deliver several kilowatts of power to extend the cruising range.

6. The forward helm station is fully protected from inclement weather and has exceptionally clear line of sight. Two auxiliary helm stations on the aft deck give the skipper flexibility for fair weather sailing. 7. The Quad44 finally provides an elegant solution for stowing and deploying shore craft. Two dinghies can be stowed out of sight in storage compartments under the main hull, and are easily moved into the water when needed. Boarding the dinghies is safe and easy, as the Quad 44 side decks serve as two large docks!

www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

19

Interior Plan The raised-cabin configuration of the Quad 44 provides an astonishing 40% more interior space than typical catamarans (see comparison chart). The four spacious staterooms all feature en-suite heads with shower, and standard queen-size berths. The settee in the saloon converts to a double berth for two additional guests. For live aboard, extended cruising, or just entertaining on the dock, the Quad 44 is the obvious choice! Deck Layout The spacious aft deck provides comfortable seating for 12 guests under a hardtop bimini. Port and starboard settees can both be converted into 4x7 foot berths for two additional guests, creating overnight accommodation space for up to 12 people. When the forward hatches are opened guests have easy access to the upper deck where there is ample space for lounging and sunning. While moored or underway, the open hatchway directs airflow throughout the boat for ventilation. Rig The revolutionary Aerolite sailing rig will be an available option to supplement the Quad 44’s electric drive. The rig provides much easier sail handling and trimming than the traditional Bermuda rig.

20

The mylar head sail and main sail are both equipped with roller furling for easy deployment and reefing. To trim the sails, the entire rig rotates by electric control to set the optimum angle of attack to the wind. Tacking and jibing are trivial operations even when single-handed. When equipped with the Aerolite rig the Quad 44 will offer essentially unlimited range without the cost, maintenance, and environmental impact of internal combustion engines. An electronic autopilot system (availability TBA) will provide automated control of both the sails and the helm, making the Quad 44 the ultimate platform for extended cruising! New Boat

M

eet the new TF10 – three hulls bringing triple the fun. The TF10 is a foiling trimaran measuring 11 meters [36 ft] in overall length, designed by Morrelli and Melvin, and built and marketed by DNA. The foiling TF10 trimaran is fun to sail with friends in, and to compete in. A well-mannered thoroughbred. And when you know your way around the racecourse in monohulls, then your skillset will allow to race the TF10 too; it is merely a different application of sailing skills. The TF10 embodies the race-proved qualities of performance, ‘sailability’, reliability and safety which we believe are 24

all desirable to make the TF10 a success as the next One Design boat for yachtclub racing – a boat enticing men and women, youth and adults. The TF10 has been designed to exceed ABS offshore racing yachts requirements and is constructed of pre-preg carbon fibre with a Nomex honeycomb core for a lightweight, yet safe and robust construction. The boat can be offered in strict One Design spec for competition purposes. It is designed to be raced by a competent crew of four or five sailors, in a relatively stable and safe mode over a wide range of wind speeds and sea states. It can entertain and delight. We hope it fires your imaginations too

and we ensure that the TF10 will deliver on the thrill of sailing; after the foiling revolution there is now evolution, and the TF10 is the first boat designed from scratch to introduce lessons learned; making foiling safer and more accessible for the everyday performance sailor. The TF10 is a foiling boat with good manners. Easily transport the TF10 – retract the amas and trailer or ship your boat. The TF10 has been built with ease of competition in mind. You can arrive in Key West on your own trailer, or ship to Europe on a standard 40’ flat rack. Open up new inland weekend cruising destinations with the ease of a boat ramp. No need to line up

for a hoist, pay for a travel lift or register for a highway permit. The TF10 can be pulled with a standard HD pickup truck and can be launched from a ramp. The TF10 is simple to transport and set up, and can be stored indoors. The TF10 was conceived towards the end of 2015. The overall concept was to build a foiling multihull that could act as an effective bridge between America’s Cup-level sailing and technology, and the more prevalent type of active racing sailors. The TF10 class association that conceived of the project, is a group of five sailing friends from the US East Coast (Newport, RI) who united to create what they felt might be needed to bring American yacht club racing more on par with America’s Cup developments from the last decade – and keep-

ing the young guns hooked to the sport of sailing. When the founding members set out to create this boat, considerations of wind range and seastate led to the development of a trimaran rather than a cata-

maran. The center hull provides exceptional buoyancy and stability which reduces the risk of ‘nose diving’ or ‘stuffing’ and pitchpoling. These gentlemen have united as the TF10 Class Association and

25

with their wealth of experience in various one-design racing series and experienced flaws earlier, the ultimate goal is to now create a racing series as exciting, honest and fun as the boat itself is. The boat was designed to be produced as a series, One Design build, with a worldwide active Class. As such, high quality moulds

were built, capable of supporting >100 production units. DNA has ample experience in manufacturing advanced composite products per strict requirements and small tolerances, thus ensuring that boats in One Design spec will actually be the same. The TF10 Class actively encourages young adults and women to

join in for racing. As such, the TF10 has been designed to be raced with relative ease by having sound ergonomics, light sheet and steering loads, and the elimination of moving daggerboards up and down (heavy). The 2018 TF10 Regatta calendar is yet to be released with marquee events planned: Summer Series on the Eastern Seaboard, winter Florida Championship, and a potential European Race Series. More info about the class can be found at: www.TF10class.com. Performance: The TF10 is a foiling trimaran. Foiling allows for high speeds, however achieving high top speeds has never been a goal during development. We sought for great performance which is accessible and safe, allowing for high averages.

MULTIHULLS Magazine | September/October 2017

We meet our performance target when amateur sailors can sail and fly this speed machine always feeling in control, comfortably doing close to 30 knots downwind. The max VMG may be greater however again; that is not the greatest goal. The foil package consists of Zboards that offer relative ride height stability by their inherent design, and are meant to be kept deployed during normal upwind and downwind sailing. The Z-boards thus eliminate the need for exceptional crew coordination or large power consumption during manoeuvres. This foil design has been successfully employed in other foiling multihulls – such as the A-cats or the Olympic foiling Nacra 17. The rudders are fitted with elevators designed to provide lift, and to create righting moment. Foils can be inserted into the floats from above, thereby eliminating the need to launch the boat with

a crane. It may also be launched from the road trailer on a normal boat ramp. The daggerboards are fitted inside of shock absorbing casings in case of a collision, thereby reducing the risk of severe hull damage. The T-rudders will kick-up in the case of impact at higher speeds. To safely sail and foil, the TF10 is equipped with electrically-powered rake control for the Z-boards and T-rudders. This system allows for similar foil trimming options (rake forward or aft) as the 2017 America’s Cup Class boats had – sophisticated tuning of foil settings while sailing for a higher pace around the course. Rake control is accomplished by electric actuators, commanded by ergonomic switches located at positions easily accessible by the crew. The mast may be fitted with an inflatable buoyancy balon that prevents the boat from “turtling” fol-

lowing a capsize, improving safety, making recovery easier, and reducing the probability of damage. As the speeds can be high, safety and comfort have been a big concern throughout the development of the TF10. The wave-piercing bows have a large volume for extra buoyancy. The rigid seating benches with back support provide a comfortable means of increasing righting moment as well as being a barrier to accidental man overboard possibilities in cases of sudden changes in heel or directionality during manoeuvres. Safety is also ensured by sound ergonomics throughout. A raised wishbone boom reduces the risk of head injuries from boom collisions when seated in the cockpit. A well laid out deck plan reduces tripping hazards when crossing sides and the loads on sheets is kept low, so the boat can be enjoyed and pushed regardless of age or gender.

vision on the water, the new Leopard 50 / Moorings 5000 from Robertson & Caine was rendered with their signature styling and craftsmanship. With versatility in mind, we bring to you the next generation of Leopard Catamarans, the Leopard 50. She has been designed to replace one of the best-selling Leopard Catamarans of all time, the award-winning Leopard 48. Her versatility begins with the option to choose the classic hard-top exterior configuration (called the Leopard 50P), or for the first time on a Leopard Catamaran of this size, an optional flybridge accommodation (Leopard 50L). The Leopard 50L is the ideal layout for anyone looking for more outdoor living space as she comes equipped with a flybridge that includes a lounge area, 30

table, sunbed and optional exterior speakers and shade awning. Access is provided by floating stairs leading up from the aft cockpit. An important distinction compared to similar sailboat flybridge configurations is that while under sail, passengers can move about the flybridge with ample headroom and never worry about interference from the boom. The flybridge is also situated to still maintain contact with the helm station, an important feature found on all Leopard Catamarans. Sailors looking for the familiar, continuous hardtop can opt for the Leopard 50P. This version does not have the flybridge and can deliver increased performance particularly when fitted with the offered squaretop mainsail and other available performance-orientated rigging and sail options. MULTIHULLS Magazine | September/October 2017

With either version, the entire exterior styling of the Leopard 50 has also been revamped to give the hull a more sophisticated look. In addition to the exterior options, the interior offers multiple layout configuration with 4 or 5 cabins, and an extensive options list. Moorings 5000 (Charter version of the Leopard 50) The Moorings 5000 is next-generation sailing catamaran and sets the pace for charter catamarans, accommodating up to 11 guests on a modern vacation platform with all the comforts of home. The 5000 features four spacious en-suite cabins, each with zoned air conditioning for personalized onboard climate control. The head charterers may wish to choose the larger “master” suite cabin complete with additional storage and sitting area. An expansive saloon features modern light wood finishes and wraparound panoramic windows, along with a skylight for even more natural lighting. A fully appointed forwardfacing galley will delight the chef among your crew with double drawer refrigerator/ freezer, gas range/oven, microwave, blender and toaster. The saloon also hosts a dining area with wraparound cushioned seating, including a drop-down table that converts to an additional double berth. From the saloon, a door provides easy access to the trampoline and forward cockpit seating area. The saloon also blends seamlessly into the aft cockpit with the help of stacking sliding glass doors. This area serves well as an extended galley, featuring electric grill, outdoor refrigerator, and dining table with cushioned, wraparound seating for enjoying waterside meals as a group. The 5000’s innovations take outdoor living to new heights with an elevated flybridge complete with welcoming lounge area, sunbed and shade awning – perfect for taking in 360-degree views. Other onboard details for a best-in-class experience include an onboard watermaker, flat screen TV/DVD, Bluetooth connectivity, complimentary Wi-Fi, interior indirect www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

It is large enough for one adult and includes mattress, air conditioning, electric outlet, 2 USB Ports, and a fire extinguisher. The port forepeak is included as a single berth in the maximum capacity of this yacht. Skipper/Cook: A hired Skipper will use an interior cabin unless all cabins are being used as sleeping quarters by charter guests, where he will instead use the forepeak. hen Sunreef Yachts unveiled the Supreme concept at the Singapore Yacht Show, it became clear that a change has occurred in the yachting world. It was the first time the nautical industry has seen a 68-footer with genuine superyacht features and a simply stunning living space of 300m² (over 3,200 ft2). Sunreef Yachts began this revolution with the premiere of the concept’s sailboat edition. With the worldwide success of the sailing Sunreef Supreme 68 the shipyard now officially presents the motoryacht version of its all-new, audacious range. Athena – the very first Sunreef Supreme 68 Power was launched by the end of July. This ultramodern motor catamaran takes her name from the Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, mathematics and arts. The yacht does draw a lot of inspiration from her patroness’s versatility.

36th AMERICA’S CUP

T

America’s Cup Will Return to Monohulls in 2021

rust has hardly been the byword for the America’s Cup. For far more than a century, sailing teams have been trying to conceal their cards and design breakthroughs and secure the sport’s most prestigious prize. But “trust” was the word that kept resurfacing as Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge announced the rules for the next edition of the event, in 2021. That competition will be a very different America’s Cup than the last three, which all involved multihull yachts and featured Larry Ellison, the American software mogul, setting the agenda by the force of his personality and his wallet. That changed in Bermuda in June when Team New Zealand, shorter on cash but longer on bright ideas, won back the Cup by routing Ellison’s Oracle Team USA. In Bermuda, the Kiwis viewed themselves as defenders of the event’s traditional values. Three months later, they have followed through on that vision. That does not make them visionaries, but it will reassure many in the sailing community even as it risks the loss of new fans who were drawn in by the spectacle of foiling catamarans that had become the races’ signature in the past decade. The Cup in 2021 will return to monohulls, the boats with deep keels that were part of every America’s Cup from 1851 to 2007 and are still the main ride for the Sunday sailor. The next Cup also will re-emphasize the idea of national teams by instituting new requirements, although not to the degree expected. Above all, the rules for 2021 will re-establish the clear distinction between the defender of the oldest major trophy in global sports and its challengers. “This is an important principle,” said Grant Dalton, the fiery chief executive of Team New Zealand. 46

“Because it is, after all, the challengers’ job to gang together to try to beat the defender.” Those lines were getting blurred in the Ellison era. In Bermuda, Oracle became the first defender to sail in the challenger series — and even earned a point that it carried into the America’s Cup match itself. It also trained regularly with the challengers and shared a design package with a Japanese team. The Cup was starting to feel more like a league. Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa, the Italian challenger of record headed by Patrizio Bertelli, have long been chummy. But Dalton prefers the old defenderchallenger divide. So does Bertelli, the silver-haired chief executive of Prada Group who, at 71, has been chasing the Cup without success with his deep pockets far longer than Ellison chased it with his. Bertelli withdrew Luna Rossa in anger from the last Cup before it began because of a late class-rule change that reduced the size of the catamarans. “It’s almost a duopoly really, isn’t it, with Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa?” Ben Ainslie, the skipper and team principal of the British challenger Land Rover BAR, said in a telephone interview. The new rules even authorize two-boat programs again. Back to the future? Not entirely. There is a new conflict of interest with Prada becoming the title sponsor for the entire regatta, replacing Louis Vuitton. There is also the matter of the boats. Dalton is well aware that Ellison and Russell Coutts, his chief adviser and former skipper, were on to something when they chose new-age catamarans that made the sport faster and edgier and forced the crews to become younger and fitter. It was, lest we forget, the Kiwis who found a way, counter to the intent of the rules, to make those catamarans hydrofoil for the 2013 Cup in San Francisco. That regatta helped spark a foiling craze in sailing MULTIHULLS Magazine | September/October 2017

that hit new heights in Bermuda, where the catamarans sometimes completed the entire race without touching hull to water. The competition was spectacular and at times destructive, with Team New Zealand capsizing in high winds during the challenger series and having to work round-the-clock to repair the damage. Monohulls, which are typically slower and considerably more water bound, will be viewed in many quarters as retrograde. But Bertelli likes the tactics and grandeur of monohulls, and sailing conditions in the Hauraki Gulf off Auckland, the likely site for this Cup, were considered less than ideal for foiling catamarans. Still, Dalton insisted the new monohull class for 2021 would be captivating in its own right, and not just because the yachts will be big (and expensive) at 75 feet. “The designers of Emirates Team New Zealand frankly have pushed technology farther than anybody ever believed it would ever be pushed in yachting in the last eight years,” Dalton told The New Zealand Herald. “So now you turn those guns on a monohull, and you wait and see, because I know what is going on, and it’s exciting. “I’ve got to assure everybody. Trust us. Wait for this boat. You are going to like it.” Races will be longer than they were in Bermuda — closer to 40 minutes than 20 — with longer prestart sequences and traditional upwind starts. Ainslie, a former Olympic sailor who was pushing for catamarans, sounded more enthusiastic than resigned about the changes. “Reading between the lines, I think the boat will end up being really a high-performance monohull and so will lend itself to the younger, extremely fit sailors coming through,” he said. “The fact the crew size is going to go up from six to somewhere between 10 and 12 also gives more opportunities for youngsters to get a shot at it.” Ainslie said he anticipated a boat that would be able to hydrofoil in certain conditions, much like the new-age Open 60s, which that were used by some sailors in the last Vendée Globe round-the-world race. “Those boats don’t go to windward very well and are not that maneuverable, so my guess is that these would be a high-performance version of that and would be narrower,” Ainslie said. “They obviously would be more powerful and dynamic because they’ll have more crew to trim the sails and work the boat.” www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

Details remain elusive because Team New Zealand does not plan to announce the full specifications for the race until March 31, 2018. Ainslie said the six-month gap would give Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa a head start in the crucial design process, since both teams will know what is coming before the opposition. “I think most people can see that’s a huge competitive advantage,” Ainslie said. “But that’s the trade-off. Those guys won it fair and square. It’s their right to set the rules as they see fit.” And how many teams will there be? Team New Zealand, which has yet to confirm Auckland as the site because of questions about infrastructure, is planning for seven challengers. That could be optimistic given the cost of a two-boat program and the challenges of new residency rules, which require 20 percent of the crew to hold passports of the nation they represent but mandate that the other crew members must reside in that country for 380 days between Sept. 1, 2018 and Sept. 1, 2020. Ellison has not officially stated his intentions, but is not expected to take part in the next America’s Cup as he may be starting his own rival sailing series “World Series of Sailing” with events held across the globe using AC35 foiling catamarans. The New York Yacht Club, which held the Cup from 1857 to 1983, and other potential American syndicates are exploring their options. So are groups from Australia, France and Germany. Second teams from Italy and Britain are possibilities, but for now the only confirmed syndicates are Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa and Land Rover BAR. “Talking and entering are two different things,” Dalton said. “It’s a big boys’ game.” MM To view the 36th America’s Cup Protocol, click here.

Oman Air Moves to Top of Overall Leaderboard with Victory in Act 5: Hamburg, Germany man Air took its second Act victory in a row in a thrilling Hamburg finale, despite last minute pressure from SAP Extreme Sailing Team. The triumph sees the Omani syndicate move into pole position in the overall rankings. Red Bull Sailing Team rounds off the podium while early season leader Alinghi posted its worst result since 2012, following an action-packed, crowd-pleasing day on the River Elbe for Extreme Sailing Series Act 5, Hamburg, presented by Land Rover.

O

48

“We’re over the moon,” said a grinning Phil Robertson, skipper and helm of the Omani-flagged squad, who adds to his growing tally of recent sailing successes, which include wins in the World Match Racing Tour and M32 World Championship, as well as in the previous Extreme Sailing Series Act in Barcelona. “The fight was on and the boys fought hard. SAP Extreme Sailing Team was sailing well and getting win after win so we knew our lead was getting smaller, but we didn’t

panic, which was key,” commented Robertson, whose team has sat top of the Act podium since race one. “I’m going to put my feet up for a week, that’s for sure,” added Robertson, whose crew included Pete Greenhalgh, Ed Smyth, James Wierzbowski and Nasser al Mashari. The battle for glory between SAP Extreme Sailing Team and Oman Air went down to the wire, however even a win in the final doublepoints race wasn’t enough for the Danes, who needed to put at least two boats between them and their rival to finish ahead. “It was super close out there. We started off strong but Oman Air sailed really cleanly and we just couldn’t catch them.” said Adam Minoprio, helm of SAP Extreme Sailing Team, whose team finishes just three points shy of the Act champion having started the day with an eight-point deficit. “It was good to take the final race for bragging rights as you’re only as good as your last race. We look forward to Cardiff and to getting one back on Phil, and we’re really enjoying the close competition,” added the

Kiwi sailor, whose team drops from first to second on the 2017 podium, tied on points with the leader. Red Bull Sailing Team finishes third and was awarded the Zhik Speed Machine Trophy, with insights from SAP, for the second Act running, for reaching the top speed of the regatta at 23.9 knots. The team remains fourth overall. At some point during the Act, each of the top six finishers have had a turn on the podium, with the constantly shifting scoreboard demonstrating just how tricky the racing has been for the international fleet of world-class sailors. The biggest upset of the Act sees Alinghi finish sixth and drop to third on the season scoreboard, a devastating blow for the 2016 champion, who led the 2017 rankings for the first three Acts. “We feel really disappointed because we didn’t sail well at all, but the other teams deserve it. It wasn’t our regatta and we need to work harder for the next one to come back in to the game.” said co-skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis. “The crew did a good job the whole regatta but we were just out of pace, made some bad decisions tactically and then that put us in a bad situation.” NZ Extreme Sailing Team follow the Swiss in fourth, having suffered a damaging blow to its scorecard in race 14. “We got pretty beaten up and ended up last in the first race so it was pretty tricky to bounce back from that. Just as we got some momentum going, we ran into the ground in the pre-start and weren’t able to race so that was hard to build from,” explained co-skipper Chris Steele. “Fourth is the best result for the

team so far this year, the learning curve this week has been awesome. I really feel like we’ve taken two steps forward, so hopefully we can take them to Cardiff,” added Steele, whose team leapfrogs Land Rover BAR Academy on the overall scoreboard to take fifth. Despite a strong start to the day for Land Rover BAR Academy, who posted a first and a second in the opening races, the young British syndicate finishes the Act in fifth, two points ahead of Alinghi and

tied on points with the Kiwis. Local wildcard entry Team Extreme, whose crew line-up featured German 49er sailor Linov Scheel, finishes at the bottom of the table. For full coverage, visit: www.extremesailingseries.com

SAP Extreme Sailing Team Triumphs in Act 6: Cardiff to Reclaim 2017 Lead

I

t went down to the wire between SAP Extreme Sailing Team and Alinghi in the thrilling finale of Extreme Sailing Series Act 6, Cardiff, but the Danes pipped the Swiss to the post in the final

throes of battle. The Danish squad claimed its third win of the season to go top of the overall leaderboard. Oman Air was forced to settle for third and hand over the 2017 lead to SAP Extreme Sailing Team,

after Phil Robertson and his men struggled to find their form of the previous two Acts. Over 90,000 spectators turned out over the Bank Holiday weekend to watch the international fleet in action on Cardiff Bay, and were rewarded for their efforts today with six nailbiting races and plenty of sunshine. For a moment, the cracks began to show for SAP Extreme Sailing Team, allowing Alinghi to claw back vital points and enter the final double-points race neck-and-neck with its main rival. But, a disastrous start dashed any hopes of victory for the Swiss team. “It feels really good,” said the winning helm, Adam Minoprio. “We went out there and started strong. The wheels fell off for a

bit in the middle, and then we put the pressure on for the final race. “That start, with Alinghi locked behind the committee boat and Oman Air over the line early, couldn’t have gone any better. We are stoked that we could keep our composure and take the win in the last race comfortably, and we’re really happy to take the lead as we head to America,” added a delighted Minoprio, whose team also included Rasmus Køstner, Pierluigi de Felice, Mads Emil Stephensen, Richard Mason and coach and coskipper Jes Gram-Hansen. Although he doesn’t get to take home the prize, co-skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis was pleased with his team’s progress after a sub-par performance in the previous Act: “It was a really good day and a good regatta for us. The team sailed very well and this was great for us after Hamburg. I’m disappointed to have had a bad start in that final race, but that’s the game. Overall, we’re really happy. “It’s all to play for and we can still win the season, that’s the goal. We’re just going to have to work harder next time,” added Psarofaghis, whose team won the Series in 2016 and currently sits third in the overall standings. “It’s been a very difficult event for us,” said Oman Air skipper Phil Robertson. “But, we’re standing on the podium so all in all it’s still a great place to be. We’re the only team that has podiumed at every event so far.” “We’re pretty fired up now and the guys have got a lot of passion going forward into San Diego,” added Robertson. Red Bull Sailing Team, skippered by double Olympic gold medallist Roman Hagara, found its feet as the

day came to a close, posting its first bullet of the Act in the penultimate race. But, by that time, the damage was done and a podium finish was out of reach. The Austrian team finished fourth for the Act and remains fourth for the season. NZ Extreme Sailing Team, helmed by America’s Cup champion Josh Junior, follow the Austrian crew in fifth but take the Zhik Speed Machine Trophy, with in-

sights from SAP, for the top speed of the Act at 23.2 knots. They finish ahead of the two British-flagged entries Land Rover BAR Academy and Team Extreme Wales. Act 6, Cardiff marks the end of the European leg of the 2017 season, following events in Madeira Islands, Barcelona and Hamburg. The Series now heads to two brand new venues in the Americas for the final two Acts.

Multihulls at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week

W

By Chris Dewar chris@csdconsulting.com.au

ith 215 yachts, around 2000 sailors in 15 different divisions, Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is one of Australia’s most popular sailing events. There are three other race weeks held in close proximity at this time (Hamilton Island, Airlie Beach and Magnetic Island) and many of the yachts come up to the Whitsundays to compete in all three events and continue cruising this beautiful, protected location. Earlier this year Hamilton Island was hit by Cyclone Debbie with 260km/hr winds. The island suffered significant damage and, five months on, the Island is mostly rebuilt. Buildings have been rebuilt or repaired, most of the debris has been mulched and most if not all of the businesses on the Island were back in operation for this week. 52

Entries were slightly down from the previous year when over 250 yachts entered, but this is expected with many of the local yachts suffering damage during Cyclone Debbie. It was still a very good turnout for the year’s event, even Prince Fredrick from Denmark had entered and was at the helm of the 60-foot Wild Oats X, which was renamed to Nanoq for this event. The 40 multihulls that entered Audi Hamilton Island Race Week varied from a Diam 24 to a 60-foot Lagoon, and were split into three divisions; the serious Multihull Racing Division; the competitive Cruising Division 1 and; the fun seeking Cruising Division 2. Although racing is held in the protected waters of the Whitsunday Islands, when the wind blows there is still a good sized swell, 5-knot tides and choppy conditions to deal with. This year the fleet had to deal with these conditions as well as glass out conditions.

Diam 24, Fury Road

Multihull Racing Division

The Multihull Racing division had only five entries this year, all of very different designs, sizes and weights. There was Fury Road, which was the new Diam 24 from VPLP, weighing in at around 500kgs. In contrast there was the 60-foot Tag 60, Stardust, which weighed in at over 21 tons. There were also two older Crowther designs (30 years old), Top Gun and XL2, that had been updated with new rigging, sails, steering and both were looking like new yachts. There was finally Rushour, which was recently rebuilt. “This was once a Rogers 36”, said Drew Carruthers the skipper/owner. “I turned it into a 40-foot Rogers and then I couldn’t sell it, so I turned it into a 50 -footer. I cut it up with a chainsaw and I guess there is no Rogers in it any more,” he said with a smile. It is a shame there were no foiling cats or big trimarans that have featured in previous years. It is a long way for them to come, but would be well worth it for them and would help increase the popularity of multihull sailing and racing in Australia. All the yachts in this division were rated under the recently revised handicapping system called OMR (Offshore Multihull Rating). It was certainly working well this year evening up the field. In race one, OMR had 40 seconds separating first and third. In the following races the differences between first and third were 13 minutes, 11 minutes, 2½ minutes, 12 minutes and 9 minutes.

Tag 60, Stardust

OMR tries to take out of consideration the boat and find the crew that performs best, so although the Tag 60 Stardust is the slowest boat in the division – with leather lounges and ice maker, it is owned by former South African Olympic sailor Eric Cook and skippered by Ian Smith, so given their experience you would expect this team to do well. Day one saw 20- to 25-knot winds gusting to 33 knots. This was not the conditions that suited the little Diam 24 Fury Road, which did not finish. Top Gun revelled in these conditions and won line honors but Rushour and Stardust just got ahead on OMR. Stardust just beat them by 22 seconds. The multihulls started five minutes ahead of the two 100-foot monohulls Wild Oats XI and Black Jack, and Top Gun maintained their lead over them for the entire downwind leg and most of the windward leg. They only passed Top Gun in the final stages when racing to wind and dropped to 10-15 knots. Downwind they were doing speeds of over 25 knots with a top speed of 28 knots. Rushour was happy with their handicap win as this was the first real test of the yacht. In Rushour’s first serious race since the rebuild earlier this year, it unfortunately had to withdraw with daggerboard and rudder damage. Today Rushour began the downwind leg 200 meters ahead of the fastest boat in the regatta the 100foot monohull Wild Oats XI and finished the downwind leg with them being 200 meters behind them.

Crowther-designed, Top Gun

Crowther-designed, XL2

53

Crowther-designed The Boat

They had a maximum speed of 28.5 knots, but could not match the consistency of Top Gun. Day 2 saw lighter winds at 10-15 knots and on Day 3 lighter again with 10 knots of breeze. This is where Fury Road started to show what it could do. On Day two, Top Gun again won line honors, but Stardust had performed well and finished first on OMR with Fury Road in second. Day 3 was overshadowed by a collision between Rushour and Top Gun. It occurred as they were tacking to round Ann Island and Top Gun had just given way to Rushour and gone behind them. They then both tacked and this time Rushour had to give way to Top Gun who was on starboard. As Rushour beared away to go behind Top Gun, they accelerated and miss judged the speed and distance and crashed into the back of Top Gun. Top Gun began to take on water and was forced to retire to secure the boat and return for repairs. Rushour had no visible damage but also retired to ensure everyone on Top Gun was safe and were able to return safely. Stardust had another handicap win followed by Fury Road. Back on the dock, Top Gun worked to get the damaged hull out of the water so repairs could begin. The next day was a lay-day and so they were hoping that the repair could be completed in time for racing on Day 4. It was a busy next day but the work was completed and they were ready for Day 4, which was cancelled due to lack of wind. On Day 5 the fleet waited for a 15-knot southerly to kick in so racing could start. The race committee scheduled two races, a windward/leeward race followed by a passage race. In the windward/leeward Top Gun was leading after the start, but it was not long before the splice in the main halyard failed and the main came falling down. From a distance, there were concerns that last-minute repairs had failed and they were out for the day, but 54

they went up the mast to retrieve the halyard and were right for the second race of the day. Rushour took over the lead and, although they had rudder issues that needed the skipper Drew to fix while racing, finished first over the line. On OMR, Fury Road had done enough to beat Rushour by just over a minute. In the following passage race Rushour continued its good form and recorded another line honors win seven minutes ahead of Top Gun. This was enough to give them an OMR win two minutes ahead of Fury Road. Leading into the final race of the day it was Rushour, Fury Road or Stardust that could win the series. Whichever of these yachts finished ahead would take the overall win. For the final race, the wind was perfect at 15-20 knots and Top Gun won line honors again to record a second on OMR. Rushour finished second and hoped they were far enough in front of the little Diam 24 Fury Road to take the win. Fury Road crossed the line only five minutes later, which gave them an OMR win and the series win. Darren Drew, the skipper of Top Gun said, “Congrats to George Owen and the Fury Road crew on the little Diam 24 off-the-beach tri for taking first. Thanks to a great crew for a bloody load of laughs and to everyone for your encouragement for what was a testing regatta. A special mention to Dale Mitchell, Hayden Turnbull, Clay Bauman and Alex McMillian for your amazing help to get us back racing after we were run into by another competitor on Tuesday.

Multihull Cruising Division

Cruising Division 1 had 15 competitors that were being rated on a performance handicap that was determined by previous racing performances. These handicaps were adjusted after each race, based on the results. Schionning Wilderness 15.2, Scamper

MULTIHULLS Magazine | September/October 2017

The 60-foot Lagoon, Bundalong

Barrocka, a Schionning Waterline 1480, came to Hamilton Island to race for the first time and so were given an average handicap. The skipper, John Sticklan, the owner, Nicolette Horak and crew had sailed on a Young-designed yacht called Earthling in previous regattas and so knew what to expect. Earthling was destroyed during the cyclone earlier in the year and is currently being rebuilt. They demonstrated this experience with a line honors and OMR win on the first 2 days. After that their handicap was increased and in the next two races finished in 4th and 6th position, while still crossing the line in 2nd and 1st place. Unfortunately, in the last race they were forced to retire after their main sail track suffered damage under the pressure of the first upwind leg. They returned to harbor, dropped off the crew and headed to Mackay. At 4:30pm they looked at the results and realized they had won, turned around, put up the spinnaker and returned to Hamilton Island to receive their first place trophy. The Boat, which is a confusing name to use in conversations, is a Crowther design yacht. “What is the name of the boat?” “The Boat.” “Yes, the boat, what is the name of the boat?” “Who’s on first?” The owner of The Boat, Graeme Etherton, has done nearly 63,000nm on her, which he said averaged out to one hour at six knots for every day he has owned her. This distance is also nearly three circumnavigations of the globe. They were always close to Barrocka, but could not beat them until day three when they had a line honors win and third on handicap. They were unlucky not to feature on the podium in the final results. Heatwave, a Lightwave 38, was taking the race seriously and had the designer of the boat Roger Overell on-board. After last year’s race they purchased new www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

sails, including a spinnaker. They had one handicap win on day five and finished third, fourth or fifth in the other races. A good result on the last day could have seen them have a win. Unfortunately, a fifth place was not enough and with Scamper, a Schionning Wilderness 15.2 getting a second, they finished in third place on the same points as Scamper, but losing on a count back. Scamper had come from South Australia on a cruising holiday and stopped in to compete at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week. Also from South Australia was Aquila, a Pescottdesigned Whitehaven. Scamper and Aquila race a lot together in South Australia and it was always close between them this week. Dave and wife Geri have sailed Aquila to the Whitsunday’s for owners Mark and Karen Johns and plan to compete at Magnetic Island Race Week and then continue cruising with the plan to have the boat in South Australia for Christmas. In Cruising Division 2 the big 60-foot Lagoon Bundalong from Brisbane just had it over the Western Australian yacht Misty Sea, a Motebello 12.5. They both finished on 16 points, but Bundalong won it on a count back with a first on day two. In third place was Salacia, a Lightwave 38. Misty Sea also took out best dressed yacht during the parade with the Super Mario Kat theme. All yachts left the regatta happy that they all had a great time with Hamilton Island putting on entertainment every night with the final night being a huge dinner/presentation with a live band. I think most people will be back next year and hopefully with more multihulls. You don’t have to be on a fast boat, as one of the gaff-rigged monohulls has been doing the regatta for 10 years and has only been able to finish one race. If you are able to get to this event next year I would recommend it, as it is a lot of fun in the perfect winter location with temperatures rarely below 20°C/ 68°F. MM Motebello 12.5, Misty Sea

Juana Good Time? Even with a Looming Hurricane!

A

fter 27 years of hosting the Juana Good Time Regatta, I can honestly say it may have been both the worst and best ever this year. Hurricane Irma was barreling up the Florida peninsula and threatening our area with one of the most powerful and scariest storms in history. The debate was on, during the previous week, as to whether we should cancel, reschedule, or go on with the show. It appeared that Navarre Beach area would be spared of the worst of it, but as the week progressed, the westwardly shifts had us concerned. With over 80 boats pre-registered and promises 56

of blue skies and perfect winds in the teens, we decided to take our chances and go on with the show. And our decision proved to be a wise one, as we ended up with some of the most amazing conditions to date and a Good Time was definitely had by all! Friday night’s “Late Registration and Smooth Sailing” party saw the Juana’s Pagodas property covered up! Registration went smoothly and quickly as the party thickened, with Blue Chair Bay Rum girls handing out free shots, Sailors’ Grill’s chef putting out a spread of munchies, and excited old sailing friends and new catching up on the happenings

since the previous year’s regatta. It’s become an ‘Old Home Week’ for lovers of multihull sailing. Sailor after sailor praised us on the decision to keep the race going, as it is the highlight of their year. Crystal clear blue skies, brisk NE winds in the teens, and sunshine greeted us Saturday morning and continued steadily throughout the day. Snapping sails and clanging halyards could be heard over the excited chatter of racers, while faces were stuffed with fresh fruit, pastries, and steaming coffee – and maybe a Bloody Mary and mimosa or two – while awaiting the 10am Skipper’s Meeting.

After I gave the usual, “thanks for parking in the far lot, using ashtrays and garbage cans, tipping your bartenders,” along with safety and committee boat descriptions and my usual, “No whining, you must have a GOOD TIME” speech, Ashley Sukalski, Race Committee Chair, went over the classes and other race descriptions, promising to meet with any of the beginners to clarify questions concerning starting flags, buoys, or any other such issues after the meeting. This is a race where we emphasize a “good time” and although we have plenty of serious racers and equipment, we also welcome first timers and those who are just getting into the sport. It really is the perfect venue for both! Sails painted the Santa Rosa Sound in color as 90+ multihulls, ranging from small beach cats to tris and cruisers, pulled off the white sand beaches and lined up for the start. Depending on boat class, sailors went either almost to the Pensacola Beach Bridge and back, or a portion of the way there, for Satur-

day’s distance racing. I personally compete in the “WAVE Timed Races” for experienced sailors without a boat. We use our well warn and weary rental WAVES, (thank you Key Sailing for loaning yours too!) and do a series of timed races around buoys, taking turns this year among 16 people with 3 different boats. It’s become a great way to get people turned on to the sport of racing, and it’s a way to be

involved even if you don’t own a boat, (my husband and son sail our cruising Gemini cat, but I like to do my own thing while being able to stay on the property throughout the event). Aside from one boat’s rudders breaking, leading them to need a car rescue from the beautiful Gulf National Seashore, all sailed back safe, suntanned and happy, though there were plenty pitch-pole and close-call stories to expound on over Sailors’ Grill’s delicious BBQ sandwich spread, with Blue Chair Bay Rum hotties, doling out free shots once again. Most everyone ended up with a great door prize, and deck dancing moved under the Pagoda once the show-band “Shenanigans” got jamming. Let the dancing continue! Hurricane Irma continued her northerly route and cleared us of the worst concerns, but predicted 40+ knot winds, along with the anxiousness of many who needed to head home and secure their lives, helped us decide to cancel Sunday’s triangle races. And after 57

a truly exceptional day of sailing Saturday, nobody complained, especially when we promised another continental breakfast before handcrafted pottery awards, followed by promises to send them away full on subs donated by our local sponsor All American Heroes. So, although it had the potential as one of the worst years due to the ominous Hurricane Irma, it ended up one of the best, in that Irma gave us lovely steady breezes and blue skies on Saturday, and all walked away with beaming smiles and promises to return next year, the weekend after Labor Day, as usual, for the 28th Annual Juana Good Time Regatta. Note: The Hobie 16 Nationals will be held at Juana’s Pagodas in Navarre Beach, Florida, the week following next year’s 28th Annual Juana Good Time Regatta, 2018. Hope to see you then!!! Charter News

What is Operation Sail It Forward BVI? • A collaboration to help support medium/long-term recovery and restart the boating economy by chartering in the BVIs. • A connection with local efforts and volunteer on the ground. • An effort to raise money prior to going directly to support local causes. To both do some good and to have a sailing vacation at the same time. • Keeping a charter journal and sharing our adventures to show the delights that are still to be found in the BVIs, how one can help make a difference while there, that the fun and the culture of the islands still lives on, and that life-long memories and friendships are there to be built.

“The BVIs Are Part of Us” by John and Autumn Vernon

Captain Johnny Rotten and Autumn

62

M

y first sailing vacation to the BVIs was in 2001. I absolutely fell in love with the islands and I have returned for a bareboat charter every year since. I did miss one year but after suffering major withdrawal symptoms I made up by returning for two charters the following year! That’s just the start…from here it gets personal. In 2006 I met my wife Autumn while sailing in a regatta in the BVIs. A common fondness for sailing and the BVIs was a great foundation. That’s also the year I picked up my Island name “Captain Johnny Rotten” thanks to my dear friend Greg, who has since passed away, but my memories of sharing a cabin with that crazy pirate will never fade. MULTIHULLS Magazine | September/October 2017

Autumn and I have returned to the BVIs together each year since we met. There was only one exception when Autumn couldn’t make a trip due to an overseas deployment with the US Air Force. The solution to that issue, like when I skipped a year, was to return for two charters with Autumn the following year. Autumn was easily agreeable to the “let’s go sailing twice next year” suggestion, which made me think, perhaps I better get to signing this girl up for a longterm charter, if you know what I mean! In 2010 Autumn and I tied the knot in Tortola, at Myetts’ Cane Garden Bay. We now have two children, Katie (4) and Kai (3) and both have been on a bareboat charter with us in the BVIs. Though now we are going through a “kid free” charter phase just until they are a little older and competent swimmers. The choice of Kai’s name was also an indication of our draw to the sea and the Islands, as the name Kai literally translates to ocean. Our bond with the BVIs goes from strength to strength. There has always been a strong element of fun and adventure with every crew I put together, and also a strong romance theme. In addition to our story, Andreia, one of our crew in 2011/12 met a guy named Stefan while partying during New Year’s at Soggy Dollar and then later, at Foxy’s for their famous New www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

Year’s party. In 2014, Stefan and Andreia were back in the BVIs, but this time to celebrate their wedding with a shore-based party and two catamarans for those who preferred their rum drinks on the water. Last year while enjoying happy hour at Saba Rock, most of the crew and I didn’t notice that two of the party had quietly snuck away. Steve and Julie returned, with Julie walking ahead of Steve, wearing a huge grin and holding her hand forward displaying a glistening ring on her finger – yep, what a place to pop the question. It worked, she said yes! Some of my regular crewmembers have started to joke that perhaps we should rename boats I charter to “The Love Boat.” Not sure that fits with my Island name though.

63

Over the years I’ve lost count of how many people I’ve introduced to the BVIs. I think it’s about 50, and most have returned at least once and several are on their own 5th or 6th trips to the BVIs. These are just a few examples of how the BVIs have become part of our personal, family, friends and life fabric. It extends further though, to the people and places along the way that we love and enjoy. There are too many to list, but a common theme of beautiful people and surroundings is laid back, friendly and welcoming.

The Indians

When Hurricane Irma was approaching the BVIs we watched with great concern. Hearing about and seeing some of the massive devastation was heartbreaking. We made some donations, but were desperately wanting and trying to think of how to help in a more meaningful/direct way. We knew that just trying to get there to assist with no real plan could be futile and potentially more of a hindrance than help. Autumn and I talked a lot about this and decided to align behind a couple of themes: (A) Assist medium/long term recovery by supporting the tourism economy, by ourselves going and spending money in the BVIs. (B) To connect with local efforts and volunteer on the ground. (C) to raise some money prior to going to directly support local causes. To both do some good and to have vacation at the same time. With the above goals in mind I called Lisa at The Catamaran Company to inquire about catamaran charter availability. I talked about wanting to get down there, our emotional connection to the Islands and our objectives. This is where Lisa expanded our thinking. We thought that by getting down there soon we could help and also inspire others within our network to get back to the BVIs themselves. The Catamaran Company has an array of new catamarans that were MULTIHULLS Magazine | September/October 2017

not in Tortola during Irma and they had my top choice available: the Lagoon 450! Lisa took it to the next level and suggested we use our story more broadly as a way to super charge the objective by adding a fourth objective (D) to journal our charter so that we can share with others the delights that are still to be found, the additional adventure, how one can help make a difference while there, that the fun and the culture of the islands lives and that life long memories and friendships are there to be built. Our plan is fluid, but built on the foundation of the love between our crew, our love of the BVI and the people, the natural beauty of the sea and the islands that are present to be enjoyed. Before we depart we are going to establish local connections with a couple of local community efforts and make specific decisions regarding volunteering as part of our float plan. We will create and share a sail log and diary with photos and videos to assist the next “Operation Sail It Forward” groups and allow them to build upon our first entry. We want to dive the Rhone, connect with others on charter and share their stories. Maybe even create a flotilla arrival for a reopening beach bar with a fun pop-up beach party! There are so many opportunities and good ways this could go – I invite all of you join me. Submit your ideas, create your own “Operation Sail It Forward” groups and continue to support the islands we all love so much!

Elcie Retraces Famous Schooner Yankee Circumnavigation Route Departing in November, 2017, Elcie, a 62’ bluewater catamaran based in the Chesapeake Bay, will closely follow the routes of Irving and Exy Johnson’s two Yankee schooners that completed seven voyages around the world from 1933 to 1958. Sailing with amateur crew, each Yankee voyage started and ended in Gloucester, MA. That 18 months later Yankee would always return on schedule, nearly to the minute, was a matter of pride to Irving Johnson.

68

Applications are being accepted now for expensesharing expedition members who want to join one or more legs of a similarly ambitious circumnavigation with Elcie Expeditions. The “SAIL to SEE Expedition 2017-19” on board Elcie will be led by Richard and Jessica Rice Johnson. Richard is not related to Irving and Exy, but Irving was in fact responsible for the younger, seafaring couple meeting almost 30 years ago.

MULTIHULLS Magazine | September/October 2017

Richard was between boats, looking for something interesting to do with sailing. In a phone conversation, Irving suggested Richard sign on as a mate with the Sea Education Association (SEA) in Wood’s Hole. At the time, Jessica was sailing as steward on Westward, a sister ship to the second Yankee, a schooner operated by SEA. Sharing a love of large boats and infected by wanderlust, they both envisioned a life afloat. It was the start of a long sailing career together. With more than 50,000 nm under her keels, Elcie, custom-built of aluminum in New Zealand in 2009, is a proven sailor – as is her full-time crew. Included in that crew are the Johnson’s two teenage daughters, Emma and Molly, who stand regular watches and perform ship’s duties. This will be Elcie’s third trip to the Pacific, and Richard and Jessica Johnson’s second circumnavigation. (Their first was via the Red Sea on their Bowman 57). With a background in sail training education, the Johnsons have always enjoyed introducing additional crew to offshore sailing and the cruising lifestyle. Those joining as expedition crew are encouraged to take part in Elcie’s operation, including standing watches, making sail changes, and even joining in the galley fun from time to time. While prior sailing experience is a benefit, enthusiasm and willingness to learn are probably the most important qualities of a good crew and shipmate. Having a sense of adventure is also helpful, as parts of Elcie’s ambitious route will be far from the typical coconut run. Elcie will call at many of the same islands and countries visited by the Johnsons on their two Yankees, including mysterious Easter Island, remote Pitcairn, Tin Can Island, and Southeast Asia. The entire voyage will consist of 27 coastal and offshore legs that range from six, to 31 days. The shortest leg is the Panama Canal Transit. The longest is a passage across the South Atlantic. Following the Yankee routes, this circumnavigation will round the Cape of Good Hope in Africa. The “SAIL to SEE Expedition” also has a mission: connecting with students and classrooms through a website developed by the Elcie crew at www.sailtosee. org. A bi-weekly logbook entry on the website will allow students to follow along as the crew reports on the passages, ports of call, and environmental issues affecting the places they stop. The crew of Elcie will report via photography and video on their blogs how these locations have changed in the eighty years since the Yankee schooners visited them. Tracking www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

Elcie’s faithful crew: Jessica, Richard, Molly and Emma

the changes will be effective because the Yankee voyages were so well documented. Much material is available in the Johnsons’ books, their National Geographic articles, and at Mystic Seaport’s Collections Research Center. If you are interested in joining the expedition as expense-sharing crew, learning more about SAIL to SEE or just vicariously following along on the voyage, more information and the itinerary can be found at www.elcieexpeditions.com Richard or Jessica can be contacted at 410-226-6036. https://www.elcieexpeditions.com/2017-19itinerary

all about nowing when 2003 Charter Cats SA Wildcat 350, Saving Grace. This cruising catamaran has been updated and ready to take her new owners to the Bahamas and beyond in comfort and safety. She is self-sufficient, with solar and wind generators, and new watermaker for days on the hook. Her inverter provides comfortable travels even when not connected to shore power, and her new electronics (including an AIS transceiver and Sirius XM marine weather antenna) and instrumentation at the helm make navigating a breeze. All lines lead to the cockpit for easy single-handing or small crews, and her Rocna 25 kg anchor and 250’ of G4 high-test chain offer safety when anchoring. When shore power is available, her Splendide washer/dryer, 32” Samsung smart TV and two new CruiseAir reverse cycle units provide plenty of comfortable living. And, her WiFi extender antenna and wireless router make remote WiFi signals accessible. Custom cushions in the cockpit and salon coupled with new mattresses in the cabins add to the comfort of this “big little cat”. She has just completed an 8-month cruise from North Carolina to the Abacos, and is immediately ready for her next adventure. Asking $149,000. For more information, contact: classifieds@multihullsmag.com

2002 Crowther 47, Frances Mae. After five years of cruising this beautiful owner’s-version blue water cruising boat, business activities resulted in her not getting used as often as she deserves, so she is now available for purchase or partnership. Please don’t confuse this serious blue water sailing vessel with a charter cat or a coastal cruiser. She is massively overbuilt for safety. The boat was built at Alwoplast (alwoplast.com) in Chile to meet demanding Southern Atlantic conditions, the Frances Mae is a true blue water cruising, go anywhere vessel that is incredibly comfortable for a couple and guests or for a small family. She is 47’ long at waterline with a length of 56’ with the bowsprit extended. Everything is overbuilt for safe offshore use employing thick vinyl foam and epoxy and kevlar. Designed by Crowther and built upon an adaptation of his legendary Catana 47’ hull with a custom designed bridge deck, the Frances Mae was built for comfortable safe cruising. She has a raised center 180 degree enclosed helm, 30” bridge deck clearance and twin daggerboards for comfortably fast cruising under sail or under power. She cruises at 2400 rpm at 8.5 kts on one engine sipping just 3 gallons per hour. She has ample power with both engines on for security when required. She is fully independent at anchor with solar, wind, and Fischer Panda 8kw genset, as well as a Spectra watermaker. Enjoy the comfortable saloon, a massive 12’6” x 17” interior cabin area combining seating, helm and kitchen. This daily living space is perfect for congregating and family activities. The three cabins offer sleeping for six in three queen beds. This is a greatly loved and head-turning vessel wherever she goes. She has been nearly completely refit during last ownership and was Alwgrip painted in 2017. Too many upgrades and improvements to mention. She is available for immediate sale to an experienced owner. Asking $332,000. For more information, contact: classifieds@multihullsmag.com

This boat has a mast height, which is low enough to travel down the ICW (under the 65’ bridges). Stainless custom boarding ladder for ease of water access. Designed by famed Australian multihull designer Lock Crowther and built by Melrose Marine, this boat has a decent saloon on the bridgedeck as you walk in, with the owners cabin on the port side and the quest cabin on the starboard side, forward of the galley. The galley is located in the starboard hull with three-burner gas stove with oven, microwave, two fridges and a freezer, two sinks with fresh and salt water taps, and storage designed for long passages. 2009 Fountaine Pajot Salina 48, Bella Vita I. Since her launch in 2009, Bella Vita I has been a dream come true to her owners. She was never a bare-boat charter. Bella Vita I has the ideal layout, with the 4 double cabins with en-suite (head and shower). Bridge, salon, galley and deck are all on the same level and open onto the huge cockpit, sun lounge, outdoor dining area and stairs to the helm. Having been bought primarily as an ocean going vessel capable of remaining for long periods of time away from land and in all sort of conditions, Bella Vita I was chosen and equipped accordingly. Her hulls are streamlined enough to provide speed and a comfortable motion through the water (minimizing pitching or see-sawing movements), yet are designed to reduce wind funneling beneath. High bridge-deck also means less ‘slapping’, which is often a problem with catamarans. Equipment-wise, this Salina 48 provides everything you could wish for, including 180L/H water maker, scuba equipment, 220V generator, additional freezer and storage space (where single berth midships are normally situated). In perfect condition and ready to keep going on her voyage around the world, Bella Vita I is your chance to walk into your dream and sail away! Asking $445,000. 2006 Fountaine Pajot Eleuthera 60, Highcube. This cat has a 4 cabin, 4 head owner’s layout. The Eleuthera’s impressive size with its striking appearance shaped by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design: oval hull ports, round skylights, with a large cockpit with teak sole, and a banquet-sized dinner table is distinctive and impressive. The Eleuthera is comfortable & easy to move around on, with wide decks provide a solid platform on which to work. Her large, comfortable cockpit accommodate different groups of people who do different things at the same time, allowing those who are sailing not interfere with lunch and vice versa. Operating the Eleuthera from the helm station to starboard of the saloon’s aft bulkhead is a treat because of its 360-degree visibility and the lack of clutter. The big cat answers to her rudders willingly, a trait that’s promoted by the hulls’ rockered shape and short keels. The raked windshield offered protection from wind and spray yet doesn’t hinder communication with the foredeck. The speedometer easily reaches double digits, but she is dry with more than six feet of freeboard and her size softens the ride. 2 -two-speed electric Harken winches on the cabin top make sailing a breeze. Inside the saloon, the forward-facing nav station to port can is equipped with a remote for the autopilot. The saloon is quiet, and the objects on the table stay put. Eleuthera’s inside/outside living arrangements incorporates the saloon with the cockpit. Asking $770,000. For more information, contact: classifieds@multihullsmag.com

2015 Gunboat 55, Toccata. Perhaps Gunboat’s finest project to date, which is saying a lot for a brand renown as the world’s finest in luxury-performance catamarans! This shimmering gold metallic Gunboat 55 was launched in February 2015 in time for the Miami Boat Show and the owner’s busy 2015 Caribbean cruising and racing schedule. She won hearts at the Heineken Regatta, won friends at the Volies de St Barths, then won silver at Antigua Sailing Week. In between regattas, she was cruised non-stop in complete luxury by her owner couple. Steering, navigation and all sail handling controls are in the salon for ultimate comfort. You can hang up your boots and musty foulies for good! Standing watch is a pleasure. The layout makes shorthanded passages easier, more comfortable and safer. With the galley up, you can cook and stand watch! Her exterior lines strongly hint at her performance pedigree. A day or two offshore will convert you for life to her performance abilities. One recent crewmember on an offshore passage likened her manners offshore to a magic carpet ride, “we effortlessly sailed at 14-21 knots my whole watch. It was such a joy, I hand-steered the entire time. The ride is so smooth and gentle; you have no idea how quickly she moves. We rattled off a 300 mile day with ease.” Her interior is beautifully finished

1996 Prout 45 Owner’s Edition, Felix. Don’t let Felix’s age fool you. As a live-aboard boat, she has been constantly maintained and upgraded by

her meticulous owners. The AeroRig is a DELIGHT to sail. Felix is an owner’s edition design, built to the highest Lloyds of London standards, with an amazing AeroRig mast. Huge salon, more like a small condo than a boat. Gourmet galley, spacious main head with shower for two. 2 state rooms with a sleeping loft. Airy, light, and picturesque views from main salon. 10 opening hatches and 10 opening ports. The helms person has remarkable 360 degrees views while sailing, and is always sheltered in the fully enclosed cockpit. The captain is in the same area as guests and crew; not in some exposed and remote location. ONLY ONE CONTROLLING LINE. Tacking and gybing is fun and easy due to the balanced self-tacking rig. The jib has a traveler forward of the mast and requires no adjustments once set. The unstayed mast permits the carbon fiber rig to flex in heavy winds, thus permitting delayed reefing. No strained shrouds & stays to worry about. Coming about is simply a matter of turning the helm. The main sail can be easily trimmed with the self-tailing 2-speed winch in the cockpit. The 2014 main sail can be raised or lowered at almost any wind angle, simply by slacking the sheet and letting the rig rotate and flag as the sail is raised or lowered. No need to bring the bow of the boat into the wind. Going down wind is one of the AeroRigs best features. No blanketed and luffing headsail, the jib is always in clean air, no worry of accidental gybing. The mast being forward aids in steering down wind, and reduces load on steering systems. The NEW 2013, Volvo 55hp engines and sail drives provide ample power, 7+ kts. cruising, and easy maneuverability when docking. Felix has logged thousands of ocean voyaging miles. She’s built to take all conditions and is ready to go anywhere, comfortably. Two fresh water tanks, 100 gal. each. Holding tank, Capacity, 40 gal. Asking $275,000. For more information, contact: classifieds@multihullsmag.com

2011 Prout 50, Courtship II. The Prout 50 SW achieves the strength essential in catamaran design by bonding the bulkheads into a one piece hull molding to form deep box sections, and then by bonding the one piece deck molding to the hull and bulkheads to create a monocoque shell. The hull has integrated longitudinal and transverse mini-nacelles designed specifically to increase stiffness. The bulkheads are strategically located to absorb torsion and compression loads inherent in a catamaran’s structure. The mainmast support bulkhead is mounted on a stringer to help transmit the mast loads away from the bridge deck. The hull is fully resin infused with E-Glass and isophathalic (vinyl-ester) resin and it contains a closed-cell PVC foam core to ensure strength and integrity and far superior impact resistance-compared to a traditional solid skin lay-up. Bulkheads and cabin soles are also produced using resin infusion to reduce weight and increase stiffness. Watertight bulkheads fore and aft add buoyancy and security in the event of collision and ensure the watertight integrity of the boat. Asking $475,000. 2000 Seawind 1000, Déjà Vu III. Designed to cope with the rugged and variable conditions of Australia’s coastline, the Seawind 1000 is widely considered an extremely capable ocean going catamaran. Déjà Vu III’s owner has traveled extensively, sailing this Seawind from Australia through Malaysia, Thailand, Borneo, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, Oman, Yemen and north through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, the Mediterranean and on to the Caribbean, British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and the United States. The layout is focused around a central upper cabin (bridge deck), with a huge, U-shaped settee that can serve as a giant berth when the dining table is lowered and cushion inserts are added. It’s a versatile space that merges directly with the cockpit in an open floor plan when sailing, or, on the hook but can be closed off with a weatherproof curtain for privacy. In the port hull, there’s a large double berth amidships, with the forward area specially designed as a woman’s boudoir. The stern area is cleverly designed with a head/shower combination including a hand basin. The galley is to starboard, again with a double berth found in the stern and a single berth in the bow. 1994 St. Francis 44 Mark II, Birdwing. The current owner has owned Birdwing for 17 years. He bought her from the original owner in Cape Town, South Africa where they did two Cape Town to Rio races. He kept Birdwing in St Vincent for several years, but it was expensive and difficult to fly there, so he sailed on to Guatemala’s Rio Dulce, where she has been for the past 10 years. The Rio is a fabulous place to keep a yacht because the labor rates are very low and there is excellent infrastructure to get all parts and services easily and professionally. Sailed over 25,000 miles and she always took care of her captain and crew. She is relatively light and fast, and often hit 13 knots, with a few 17s every season and an all time record of 22 while surfing in big swells. Due to an inability to find a partner who desires to share the cruising life with him, and having too many other projects to attend to; with sadness, he must confess that he can no longer properly care for Birdwing, and must pass the torch. Asking $159,000. For more information, contact: classifieds@multihullsmag.com

There is a large aft deck composed of teak and fiberglass. The steering station is to starboard beneath the hard dodger that covers the cockpit. Visibility behind the opening window is excellent, and by lowering drop-down curtains the entire space can be enclosed. The side decks are wide and accessible. There’s a solid bridgedeck forward of the coachroof, with incorporated storage lockers, and a solid plank between the trampolines to the forward crossbeam, under which is a retractable aluminum bowsprit for the gennaker. The aluminum mast and solid vang are from Sparcraft. A nice set of molded-in steps provide access to the top of the coachroof. In the main saloon, the nav station and instrument panel are forward opposing a dining table with a wraparound settee to starboard. A cool touch is the flat-screen TV that faces the settee and ties into the ships Navigation system. There are three staterooms in the hulls, as well as a custom workshop with Island work area. The vessel offers truly impressive heads with shower stalls as well as one tub. The high-gloss Bamboo woodwork throughout is beautiful and gives the vessel a warm and inviting feel. Asking $525,000.
