New Catamaran Slips on the Texas Gulf Coast To meet the increasing demand for catamaran slips on the Texas Gulf Coast, the Kemah Boardwalk Marina in Kemah, Texas has once again expanded its available catamaran slips from the previous 16 slips to 28 dedicated catamaran slips, which now include: • Fourteen 45’ slips with 32’ beams (accommodating up to 48’ vessels) • Eight 42’ slips with 32’ beams • Four 50’ slips with 35’ beams • Two 65’ slips with 35’ beams “Our location on Galveston Bay continues to see an increase in new catamaran buyers and a demand for catamaran slips with no slowdown in sight. To ensure we can accommodate these prospective new marina guests, we opened up an entire new block of dedicated catamaran slips on A-Dock, our “Catamaran Row” said Marina Manager, Brad Grace. The additional slips now allow the Kemah Boardwalk Marina to offer the largest selection of catamaran slips on the Texas Gulf Coast. Featured Products Intelligent In-Line NMEA Terminator Marine electronics specialist, Actisense, have unveiled a world and industry first: TER-U (A2KTER-U) is a smart universal microterminator for the NMEA 2000 bus. What makes the TER-U unique is that it acts as an intelligent diagnostic terminator, which provides instant feedback as to the state of the NMEA 2000 bus onboard. It is also a universal terminator that can be used as an in-line terminator or as either a Male or Female terminator, as it comes supplied with blanking caps. Phil Whitehurst, CEO of Actisense, said: “In our experience, we have found that the vast majority of issues with NMEA 2000 networks are simply due to the fact that the bus is not powered (e.g. due to a blown fuse), the voltage is too low (e.g. because of bus length; device current from LEN are not calculated correctly; or new devices added to the bus change the overall LEN), or networks are not

terminated correctly (i.e. bus does not have 2 terminators). Because the TER-U is not only a termination resistor, but it has a built-in high accuracy voltage monitoring circuit which continuously monitors the bus voltage, it will illuminate its internal LEDs when it detects that the bus voltage is of the correct polarity. If it detects that the voltage is within the minimum required range, it will indicate ‘GREEN’ immediately, providing continuous valuable feedback as to the state of the bus.” Mr. Whitehurst went on to explain that if the voltage fell below the minimum required level of 9.0V then the LED’s would illuminate ‘RED’, showing there was a potential problem with the NMEA 2000 bus power. Similarly, if the LED’s did not illuminate at all, that would indicate that there was no

power or that the polarity was incorrect. This monitoring function would happen continuously and remain permanent. Because these terminators are illuminated, they instantly provide feedback that the terminator is actually present (i.e. able to identify that there are two terminators present) – especially helpful in difficultto-reach locations. This smart universal micro-terminator can be used as either a male or female terminator or even as a feed through terminator for applications at the top of masts, thus making it truly universal. C

ruising allows you to discover new favorite foods as you travel. Whether you’re getting your first taste of lionfish or jicama, it helps to have someone show you how to prepare it properly. In this article, Amy Alton shares techniques to help you prepare breadfruit along with a couple recipes that allow you to make the most of it. If you’ve cruised the South Pacific, you’ve probably noticed a breadfruit tree and admired its qualities; the trees grow tall with glossy, lobed leaves in a multitude of green shades. But the fruit looks odd hanging off the ends of the branches, weighing the tree down. It’s round, hard, and heavy, with scaly green skin. But this fruit, originally native to New Guinea, holds a wealth of nutrients in its versatile flesh. The plant spread throughout Asia and the Pacific and eventually was brought to the Caribbean by the British. It grows well in the tropics and is one of the highest-yielding fruit plants. It produces throughout the year and one tree can yield up to 450 pounds of fruit. This has provided the world with an easy-togrow, high carbohydrate food source. 16

When I encounter breadfruit, it’s usually at the local vegetable market. Most commonly it’s sold when fairly large (soccer ball size), green and mature. Baby breadfruit tastes like artichokes, while soft and brown ripe ones taste sweet. The standard offering tastes like sweet potatoes. Breadfruit is high in complex carbohydrates and has a lower glycemic index compared to other white starches. Just a ½ cup of breadfruit provides 25% of your daily-recommended fiber intake. Consuming local breadfruit is a great way to eat healthily and cut down on the carbon footprint of your food.

How to Prepare the Breadfruit

These instructions are for your typical mature breadfruit. It’s much like preparing a pineapple with its hard outer skin and an inner core. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2020


First, I cut the top and bottom off.

and throw it away, leaving the edible porous and solid flesh. Here there are small brown seeds with hairs that extend out into the porous part. If you desire, you can cut out the porous part as well, for aesthetic purposes. I often see breadfruit chips made with the porous part and I like it. I also wash the breadfruit here, as the little hairs tend to get everywhere. That’s it! You now have four large chunks of breadfruit to cook with.

Four Easy Ways to Cook Breadfruit

Then, I work around the fruit cutting the skin off. A sap is released, although it’s not as sticky and thick as some other produce, you will notice it leaving a residue behind.

Once you’ve followed the instructions for peeling and prepping the breadfruit, try a few of my favorite ways to cook it: • Dice the breadfruit, toss with olive oil and salt and bake until browned. • Steam the breadfruit and mash it. • Pan fry chunks of breadfruit with oil. • Throw a whole breadfruit into your beach bonfire and pull it out when the skin is black. If you’re more ambitious, here are two easy recipes to try:

This is my favorite method to eat breadfruit. It’s perfect for a treat to bring to sundowners. They get gobbled up in no time! Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 3 mins Calories: 940kcal Carbs (g): 1

Ingredients

½ breadfruit ½ cup oil or more as needed (coconut or neutral oil) Salt

Lay your breadfruit slices in the hot oil in a single layer. Because I use a mandolin, my slices are very thin, and brown quickly. Flip to brown on both sides. You will notice the slices start to curl up the darker brown they get. When the chips are stiff and light brown, use your tongs to remove your breadfruit chips from the oil and transfer to a paper towel covered plate. Repeat for all your slices. Salt and serve!

Breadfruit Curry Instructions

Slice the breadfruit quarters thinly. If you have a mandolin onboard, use it!

readfruit curry is a great vegetarian option. This dish is enjoyed all over the world, from Sri Lanka (where it’s called del) to Fiji and Jamaica. This is a very basic recipe with ingredients you should be able to find anywhere.

2 tablespoons coconut oil 4 cloves of garlic, minced 1 knob of fresh ginger, minced 1”x1”x2” size ½ onion, diced ½ bell pepper, diced ½ breadfruit, cut into small chunks 1 can coconut milk (13.5 ounce size) ½ teaspoon turmeric ⅛ teaspoon chili powder (optional) 2 tablespoons curry powder ½ cup water, or more as needed

Instructions

Heat the oil in a saucepan or stockpot using mediumhigh heat.

Pour in coconut milk, spices, and water. Bring to a boil. Turn the heat down, cover, and let simmer for 2030 minutes until the breadfruit is soft when poked with a fork. It should feel like a cooked potato. If your sauce gets too thick, add more water and stir. Serve with chapati or rice. Ingredients:

35 ml coconut infused rum 25 ml Falernum spiced rum liqueur 15 ml fresh squeezed lime 10 ml Cointreau/Triple Sec 10 ml Agave syrup

25 ml Ron Zacapa 23 25 ml Jack Daniel’s single barrel 3 dash bitters 3 dash peychauds bitters 5 ml brown sugar Orange zest Soda

Method:

Add sugar, splash of soda and orange zest in to mixing glass. Muddle to break down the sugar. Slowly add the rum and whisky over ice and stir until required dilution. Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. This drink may also be served over ice. Suggested garnish: orange zest or fresh cherry.

Method:

Chill the cocktail glass. Place all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and add ice. Shake vigorously. Strain and then fine strain the cocktail into the glass. Garnish with a lime zest.

Cotswold’s Salty Dog Martini

This a la mode version of the classic Salty Dog is intensified by the complex botanicals of the Cotswold’s Distillery Gin. We set sail with a gentle encounter of maraschino cherry on the lips, which introduces the citrus notes of the gin (lime & grapefruit peel), increasing to an alluring bittersweet citrus zest of the grapefruit. The lime infused salt around the rim will suppress the bitterness of the fresh grape fruit and intensify the explosion of ice cold citrus spice on the palate.

Place all other ingredients into an ice filled shaker, shake and fine strain into a martini glass. Embellish with a twist of grapefruit peel

Method:

Add all ingredients (except Lagavulin) into a mixing glass then add ice. Stir to chill and dilute. In a chilled cocktail glass, add a splash of Lagavulin whisky and swirl to coat the glass. Drain off the excess whisky, then pour the chilled cocktail into the glass. Garnish with a flamed orange zest & rosemary.

The gimlet was promoted and drunk by British officers back in the 19th century. Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette is cited by some as the namesake of the gimlet. Acting as a doctor to sailors, he administered gin with lime in order to mask the bitter taste. Allegedly, he introduced this to his shipmates to help them swallow down the lime juice as an anti-scurvy medication. British sailors, though – unlike their superior Naval officers – had rum rations, and so used to mix this in with their lime. ur dog Kyra absolutely loves being in the boat. She’s never happier than when she’s standing in the bow with her tongue hanging out and her ears flopping in the wind. On the rare occasion that she gets left behind, we can hear her howling on the dock over the sound of the motor long after she’s out of sight. 28

We are very lucky that Kyra took to the boat right away – our family cottage in Northern Ontario, Canada can only be reached by boat, and we were relieved to be able to take her with us on the 45-minute ride. Not all dogs take to the boat so well. Boats are loud, fast and unsteady; the new sights and smells

can be overwhelming; even just setting out can be a challenge in the hectic environment of the marina. With a little planning, practice and patience, most dogs can learn to be comfortable on a boat. Dogs & Boating

Boating can be a great activity for you and your dog to bond over. Dogs love going places with their owners, exploring new smells and meeting new people. As any good boater knows, safety is extremely important on the water. In addition to all the usual boat safety precautions, there are some special considerations for our four-legged passengers. Every year dogs are hurt in docking accidents or fall overboard – often they are rescued, but sadly that’s not always the case. It’s important to be aware of the risks and take steps to keep your dog safe on the boat.

Not all dogs will take to the boat right away, and unfortunately some just never will. It’s important to understand your dog’s temperament and read their body language as your introduce them to the boat. Be patient, and take steps to make the experience as non-threatening as possible. Start small and take baby steps to gradually introduce your dog to the water and the boat. Watch for signs of anxiety in your dog, like excessive panting, drooling or barking, and let them get used to the water at their own pace. If, like Kyra, your dog shows no fear of the water or the boat, you’ll need to help them develop restraint to keep them safe even when they are excited. Even if your dog can sit, come and stay on land, it’s important to practice the same commands in the new environment of the water and boat. Some dogs love the water and are natural swimmers. Preparing Your Dog For Boating

Before you try to go boating with your dog, there are some things you can do to make sure it will be a fun and safe experience for you both:

Start small and take baby steps so your dog won’t be overwhelmed. Start gradually by walking out together and use treats and toys to lure your dog into the water. A life jacket can make your dog feel more secure. Watch for signs of distress in your dog, and don’t push them beyond their comfort zone.

Now that your dog is comfortable in the boat, it’s time to start planning your first big trip! Planning ahead is important when boating with your dog – here are some tips that can help make sure the experience goes smoothly for everyone:

Do some research to find the closest veterinary hospitals along your route, and call ahead to confirm their policies for emergency visits and out-of-town patients, if that applies to you. If you have pet insurance, a quick call to your provider will confirm whether your policy covers boating accidents.

Emergency Plan

Another important part of your trip planning is creating an Emergency Plan. You and everyone on board should know exactly what to do in any type of boating emergency. One person should be responsible for taking care of the dog if any kind of emergency occurs, and a separate plan should be in place in case the dog goes overboard.

Test Runs

Once your dog is comfortable in the water, it’s time to introduce them to the boat and the marina. Take your dog to the dock during a quiet time and practice getting on and off the boat on command. Burn Off Energy

Give your dog a chance to burn off some energy before boarding the boat – a brisk walk or a quick game of fetch will help them stay calm throughout the launch and during the ride. If your dog is highenergy, take frequent breaks and let them run on land or swim to burn off energy and keep calm on the water.

Be Sun-Safe

Once your dog is comfortable with the boat and in the water, it’s time to set sail.

Dogs can suffer from sunburn and heatstroke just like us – but unlike us, they can’t sweat it out. Keep your dog safe and happy by providing shade and plenty of water.

Practice your emergency plan so that everyone knows their role and the rescue operation can be as smooth as possible. Never jump in to save your dog! Not only is it dangerous for you to jump from a moving boat, but your dog could panic and scratch you, and even drag you under water. Instead, slow down, circle back and carefully drift close to your dog with the motor off until you can lift them out by handle of their life jacket. Depending on the size of your boat, a rescue pole can be a helpful tool to keep on deck. Practice makes perfect – getting your dog used to being lifted into the boat in a controlled setting can make emergency situations easier on everyone.

On Board

It’s finally here – your first boating adventure with your dog! You’ve trained and practiced and planned – now it’s time to enjoy the sea with your furry first mate! Here are some tips for making it a safe and happy trip for your dog: 32

Dog-safe sunscreen can protect sensitive skin. Dogs absorb heat through their feet, so a blanket or mat can give them a cool place to lay and prevent slipping in the boat. Watch for signs of heat stroke in your dog – if they are panting and drooling excessively, have a rapid pulse or appear clumsy, make sure they get water and shade immediately. If your dog likes swimming, this is a great way to help them cool down.

Potty Time

Don’t forget to plan for your dog’s potty needs. If you have the space you can create a potty station on deck with pee-pads or carpet. If you don’t have the space, or if your dog refuses to go on the boat, you’ll need to plan frequent stops on shore so your dog can relieve themself.

Boat Manners

It’s important that you consistently reinforce the good boat manners you practiced with your dog early on. You need to be able to keep your dog calm in the boat, and ensure they will behave and come when called on shore. When the boat is moving you should encourage your dog to sit or lay down, and your dog should always wait for permission to get on or off the boat. Always bring a leash with you so that you can control your dog if they get overexcited. Food Safety: Keep your own food, drinks and other items out of reach of your dog. Many human foods and even sunscreen can be poisonous to dogs. In the close quarters of a boat even a wellbehaved dog can become bored and restless, and the temptation of easily accessible treats can prove too overwhelming to resist.

Potty

You don’t need a lot of gear to have a successful boating trip with your dog, but there are a few essential items you should always have, plus a few that can make your trip a little more fun for you and your dog!

If you’re planning long trips with few shore stops, you’ll need to train your dog to go potty on deck. Provide a designated space with Astroturf, newspaper or carpet. Many ready-made options are also available.

First Aid Kit

Life Jacket

Keep a basic dog first aid kit on board, including special dog items like nail clippers, a muzzle and dog-safe pain meds.

Water

Keeping your dog hydrated is essential on the boat; pack lots of fresh water from home and a plastic travel bowl (metal can get too hot in the sun).

Shade

Dogs can get sunburn and heatstroke just like people. Make sure your dog has a shady spot to lay on the boat, and invest in some dog-safe sunscreen.

What are the Shipping Options for Your Catamaran? Report by Reliance Yacht Management

W

hile crewed sea deliveries continue to be a large part of our workload, we have seen an increased demand for shipping and combined services. This has led to the need for our clients to understand the different methods by which a yacht can be shipped and the associated terminology. In every line of work, sooner or later you have to deal with some confusing industry-specific terminology. Here we’ve put together a selection of the most common shipping terms to help you to better understand the vernacular you might come across when arranging your shipping.

Roll On / Roll Off

Roll on / Roll off is also known as “RoRo” in its abbreviated version.

RoRo ships are vessels designed to carry wheeled cargo, such as automobiles, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers, and railroad cars that are driven on and off the ship on their own wheels. This is in contrast to Lift-on/Lift-off vessels, which use a crane to load and unload cargo. RoRo vessels have built-in ramps that allow the cargo to be efficiently rolled on and off the vessel when in port. RoRo is generally reserved for larger oceangoing vessels. The ramps and doors may be stern-only, or bow and stern for quick loading. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2020


In this boat transport method: • Your boat is taken on its own trailer to the loading dock or lifted to dock from water onto a trailer • The trailer is rolled through the ship’s door opening into the storage area • At the destination, this procedure is reversed to discharge your boat onto the dock. It can then be towed or lifted back into he water for onward transfer • Boats without their own trailer can also be transported using special flatbed, or MAFI trailers provided by the operators.

Lift On / Lift Off

Due to height restrictions on larger boats that will not fit inside the hull of the ro/ro vessel, Lift On/Lift Off or “LoLo” method of transport is often better suited. LoLo requires a crane operator on each end of the move, so it can be a more expensive way than with the aforementioned method, but it depends on the type of watercraft and destination as well. The Lift On/Lift Off yacht transport method is ideal for vessels ranging from 32 ft. to 150 ft. in length and up to 900 metric tons in weight. The loading procedure maybe direct from the water to the ship’s deck or could involve two lifts – the first from the water to the quay and then from the quay to deck. In this boat transport method: • Slings are placed under the hull of your boat • Professional divers check their position • Cranes mounted on the ship lift your boat out of the water • The crane sets your boat onto a custom-built cradle on the ship’s deck.

Float On / Float Off

Float On / Float Off or “FloFlo” yacht transport method is extremely versatile and uses semi-submersible ships. There is almost no limit to the size of yacht that can be transported, but routes are limited. These ships are designed to take on ballast water in floodable tanks that partially submerges the vessel. The yachts are then floated over the submerged portion of the vessel, which then deballasts and surfaces under the cargo. After the vessel is full afloat, the yachts are secured for transport. In this boat transport method: • Your boat sails alongside the specialized ship • The transport deck of the ship is submerged • Your boat floats above the submerged portion of the transport ship • Special cradle systems are placed by divers under water • Water is slowly released and the transport ship deck rises • Upon arrival at the destination, this procedure is reversed to discharge your boat 37

Breakbulk

Breakbulk refers to the method of utilizing container and mixed cargo ships when transporting ships. This may offer greater options, less wait time and more flexibility to our clients, but not all operators provide the specialist handling required for yachts. When possible, containers will be placed around boats to protect and shield them from weather while underway. How Does it Work?

Reliance will need to know a little about your yacht, age, model, location etc. and details about the safety equipment on board including whether the liferaft and flares are in date. Reliance will then provide a quotation for the delivery clearly identifying what is and what is not included.

What Does it Cost?

Reliance Yacht management aims to provide a competitive proposal with one working day from

inquiry. Quotes will be based on completing the delivery within a time allowance. This takes into consideration the vessel, the route and time of year and will include days required for preparation and planned stops. A Dream Yacht Delivery

A

t short notice, Reliance Yacht Management was tasked to take over the Lagoon 450 Catamaran “Solicitude” at the commissioning dock in Les Sables d’Olonne in France for a delivery to Tortola. The boat was destined to join the Dream Yachts charter fleet in the BVI. Leading delivery captain Hanna Golebiewska was the perfect choice for the contract. She had the experience of the brand and the model. She had also completed multiple Atlantic crossings on catamarans. The Operations Desk at Reliance assisted in sourcing suitable crew, communications, professional weather routing and set up a dedicated webpage for the Owner to follow progress. Within days all was set, and on November 29th the crew were on board. Circumstances were such that extra time was needed to prepare and clean the yacht prior to delivery. Missing inventory had to be replaced. A series of photographs and reports were provided giving the Owner and Broker a comprehensive assessment of the yacht’s condition. 42

All that was need now was a weather window. Biscay demands respect and especially in winter. The weather systems can be queuing up across the Atlantic bringing strong headwinds and high seas as they come over the continental shelf. So when they departed on December 2nd it was after careful analysis and confidence that a safe passage can be made across to northern Spain and Portugal. Knowledge and experience of the yacht’s characteristics in heavy weather is also essential in passage planning. On the December 6th Solicitude joined up with other Lagoons on delivery as they entered Cascais, Portugal. As a new yacht, the engines needed their first service to comply with warranty. This was pre booked by the Operations Desk and therefore was completed on the same day they arrived much to the envy of the other catamarans on delivery. The owner was following the progress at every stage on line with positions reports, photographs, weather updates and captains notes. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2020


With the aid of professional weather routing, waypoints were given to the captain to help make the best of the conditions across the Atlantic. On the January 9th Solicitude cleared customs in Virgin Gorda. No dramas, no problems, nothing broken and everything in good order. The appraisal feedback from Dream Yachts was excellent, scoring the highest possible marks for both the boat and the crew. But the highest praise came from the Owner who said in an email: “After dealing with another skipper who was less than professional, I was referred to Nick to handle the delivery of my vessel from Les Sables d’Olonne to Tortola, BVI. From the moment I spoke to Nick, I sensed that he was a trustworthy, competent individual with a lot of experience. “From the beginning, Nick went beyond the call of duty to ensure that the issues caused by my previous skipper were addressed, and he quickly provided a

ithallsystemschecked out and tuned to perfection, the big catamaran’s GPS display read a crisp 25 knots. This met her design speed and the tastefully appointed galley and accommodation area matched the renderings approved by the owner. Another Powerplay boat was ready for delivery. James Dewing started developing Powerplay catamarans in Australia and he has since built in China before settling in Thailand. As for many international firms, like Toyota, Nikon and other hightech industries, he has found an educated and skilled workforce. “These are key elements in cost effective boat building,” Dewing explains, adding, “The boat building industry is very strong here 44

and being located in one of Asia’s largest and finest marinas, there is a wealth of quality services.” With a staff of about 52 he is able to fabricate, from start to yacht-

finish, a 20-meter by 8.2-meter catamaran in about 12 months. The vessel recently delivered from the firm’s Pattaya facility is fabricated from PVC core and Vinylester resin

System offering all-important good build weight. The company, Powerplay Catamarans, offers the option of an epoxy resin system. The current vessel, named Seamaster, has a displacement of about 28,000 kilograms light ship. And 38,000 loaded displacement. Accommodation on Powerplay catamarans is customized to meet our client’s requirements. Seamaster has a total of 10 berths. These are located in forward and aft cabins in the two hulls. Additionally, a master cabin, with king-sized bed and en-suite, is located forward on the main deck. The galley, dinning and extended cockpit are all located aft. For future orders, modifications to the design can provide more berths configured for family or charter requirements on the topsides and other variations. The beamy nature of the catamaran lends itself well to nearly infinite design opportunities for accommodation spaces. James Dewing explains that in recent vessels he had kept to the same hull shapes.

“In this iteration, I have achieved the best balance of speed, economy, range and good looks” he explained. “Individual owners can opt for variation in the main deck spaces and layout of the fly-bridge, but the hulls have been optimized.” For Seamaster, the dual electric bow thrusters, one in each hull, enhances the already excellent slow-speed maneuverability of the catamaran. QSB8.3-liter main engines, each producing 600 HP gave the new boat a 25-knot speed on sea trials. “We made the 850-mile delivery trip to Singapore on two of the three fuel tanks with some to spare.” Dewing said. Joystick controls, on the comfortable flybridge and aft, allow the twin propellers to act in concert for ultimate fingertip control for the boat. An option of Cummins Zeus Pod drives with the 8.3-liter engines is also available. These innovative pod drives allow for excellent station keeping in wind or currents as well as good handling when docking. The single joystick controls combine the drives with bow thrusters to give ease of handling and efficiency of maneuvering. Following sea trials in December 2019 the boat was delivered for shipping onward to her owner in Tahiti. James Dewing reports; “The second 65 is now out of the molds and being assembled. We will, of course, be using the Cummins QSC 8.3, which is a remarkable quiet engine, delivering all the

power we need. With the 27 x 29.5 five-blade props she is smooth and graceful. uxury catamaran builder Privilège has unveiled a new version of its Signature 580 featuring even more onboard comfort and better stowage for bluewater sailors. The major innovation to the new Signature 580 Épure is to offer three huge exterior lockers in place of the forward cockpit. This storage can be converted into a comfortable sunbathing area by simply laying down cushions, which are easy to stow again when heavy weather is on the horizon. With no forward cockpit, there is no need for a door through from the saloon, creating even more living space internally. This also allows for uninterrupted glazing around 52

the chart table, which gives better visibility and lends the boat an even more dynamic look. Of course, the Signature 580 range features an optimized hull shape with an inverted bow, greater flare and a raised forefoot. Performance

The sharp bow entry of the twin hulls allowed the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 to cut through the 2’ to 3’ (.61 m to .91 m) chop on test day.

The Fountaine Pajot MY40 has a length overall of 45’11” (13.98 m), a beam of 19’10” (5.96 m), and a draft of 3’8” (1.12 m). With an empty weight of 30,865 lbs. (15,486 kg) with 100-percent fuel capacity, 50-percent water capacity, and four people onboard, the test Fountaine Pajot MY 40 had an estimated test weight of 34,363 lbs. (15,587 kg).

Top Speed: With twin 370-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS500 pod drive diesel engines running at 3300 rpm, the test boat reached a top speed of 21.3 knots (24.51 mph). MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2020


Best Cruise: At 2800 rpm and 15.7 knots (18.07 mph), the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 achieved a 26.9 gph fuel burn that translated to 0.6 nmpg (0.69 mpg) and a range of 196 nautical miles (225.55 statute mils/362.99 kilometers) while still reserving 10-percent of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s 372-gallon (1,400 L) total fuel capacity. This sort of efficiency is typical of a catamaran with the narrow entry hulls and good hull to length ratios. The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 will remain on plane on down to 10.1 knots (11.62 MPH) but drop her down to a displacement speed of 9 knots (10.36 mph) and the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 will nearly double the range to 476 nm. All this while still holding back a 10-percent reserve of the boats 372-gallon (1,400 L) total fuel capacity.

The tight confines of the marina showed how maneuverable the wide stance of the drives make the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 close in maneuvering stress free. The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 seems to have a pivot point right at the helm, which makes maneuvering even easier. Backing the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 into a tight slip is not a factor thanks to the sightline of the port quarter through the hatch for the stairs.

Boat Inspection

Handling

In the open seaway, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 has admirable performance and handling making operating comfortable.

Stern

With the wheel hard over, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 turned virtually flat and remains level with only the seas acting to induce a slight roll.

The Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is stable and surprisingly comfortable in the choppy conditions that existed on the day of the test. Spray rails are at each hull and they form the chines as they carry back creating a surprisingly dry ride. Add speed and they become even more effective. The Fountain Pajot MY 40 demonstrated the usual sneeze effect that is typical of catamarans as the waves become trapped between the hulls. The full-beam swim platform on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is 52” (132.08 cm) deep. A 41” (104.14 cm) deep aft most section can be lowered hydraulically into the water leaving 11” (27.94 cm) full beam fiberglass section with non-skid molded in.

The swim platform is hydraulically lowered down and out exposing a set of stairs on each side of the transom leading to the non-skid section above.

Shown is the starboard side mounted re-boarding ladder with four rungs. When the re-boarding ladder is deployed with the swim platform in the up position, the ladder only has 17” (43.18 cm) and just two of the rungs in the water.

Cap: The L-shaped bench seating is offset to starboard creating a wider port side stair to the swim platform.

There is storage under the aft bench seating that extends the full length of the bench.

Built into the starboard side stairway on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is a freshwater, pull-out wand shower.

The transom is asymmetrical with the port side stairs to the aft deck 34” (86.36 cm) wide, considerably wider than the 16” (40.64 cm) wide starboard stairs to the aft deck.

Aft Deck

Egress to the aft deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is via port and starboard steps. The spacious aft deck is 17’4” (5.28 m) wide and 6’1/2” (1.98 m) deep. The aft deck has an asymmetrical layout with the 11’2” (3.4 m) long, L-shaped bench seating favoring the starboard side. 58

The shore power cord is located under the first step leading to the side decks on the port side of the aft deck. The extended upper flybridge deck creates a protective 7’3” (2.21 m) overhead at the aft most section and 6’9” (2.06 m) overhead at the forward most section of the aft deck. Galley

Storage is in the middle of the aft deck and designed for life raft storage. Owners have the option to use this space for other storage at their discretion.

A double basin stainless-steel sink is under hung on the solid surface countertop in the aft most section of the U-shaped galley counter space.

The forward section of the counter space has a two-burner cooktop, prep area, and trash bin receptacle.

Built into the port side of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s galley is the full-sized refrigerator/freezer.

There is under deck storage hatches throughout the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 including the galley deck. A suction cup handle in lieu of latches, or finger holes is used to open the solid hatch.

Salon and Dinette

The salon and dinette on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 are located directly forward of the galley. The salon table can convert from a coffee table to a raised table and opened to make it a full-size dining table.

Above, on the starboard side of the Fountaine Pajot MY 40’s galley are storage cabinets. Moving forward from the galley, there is a 9” step up that transitions the galley to the salon and dinette area. There is a corresponding rise in the overhead that continues the 6’8” (2.03 m) headroom forward.

Just behind the storage cabinets, mounted above the counter is a convection oven.

Both of the end tables open and have storage space below. They close with a soft-touch self-closing hinge.

Fully open, the table serves as a 5’11” (1.8 m) long dining table.

On the starboard side of the salon and dinette is a chart table with a recessed top. Below is the icemaker. The flat panel television (not shown because it had not been installed the day of the test) rises from the outboard section of the table.

The lower helm on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is mounted on the starboard side. Fountaine Pajot has kept the layout of the helm station simplistic relying on a single 16” (40.64 cm) multifunction display that integrates with the engines data to provide digital gauges reducing redundant analog gauges that would clutter the helm’s dash. 61


There is 5’6” (1.68 m) from the deck to the top of the windshield with 6’8” (2.03 m) of headroom behind the helm console. The dash is a carbon-fiber textured leather panel with zero glare factor.

A fabric brow above the lower helm dash helps to reduce glare to the digital displays.

The single 16” (40.64 cm) multifunction display is mounted on the inboard side of the lower helm dash.

The steering wheel is leather-wrapped with three stainless-steel spokes and a Fountaine Pajot branded hub. Note, the steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base.

On the outboard side of the lower helm dash is the Volvo Penta 7” (17.18 cm) engine monitor display, autopilot, engine start/stops switches, and the rocker switch for defogging the windshield.

Abaft of the helm console are the digital engine controls and IPS joystick mounted on a leather subpanel surrounded by storage space, two drink holders, and a stainless-steel fiddle to help hold things in place.

Below are mounts for remotes including the VHF radio remote and a well-positioned footrest. Note the charging station outlets and light switches.

Bow

Forward on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 there is another al fresco social area that features inboard facing bench seating that converts to two lounge seats with multi-position backrests.

The helm seat has a single bolster and is mounted on a fixed base. Note the Fusion stereo mounted below.

The windshield on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is two 5’4” (1.62 m) wide by 3’8” (1.12 m) tall sections totaling 10’8” (3.25 m) across. The brow extends 2’4” (0.71 m) over the windshield.

The starboard side window at the helm has an opening section for ventilation and communication with crewmembers.

Side Decks

The side decks on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 are 26” (66.04 cm) with safety rails on the outboard side and grab rails on the aft part of the flybridge bonnet on the inboard side of the side decks.

With a 12” (30.48 cm) deep footwell between the two 6’8 (2.03 m) long lounge seats they can double as inboard facing bench seats.

Under a large hatch in the footwell, there is a spacious storage area that measures 5’9” (1.75 m) wide, 5’ (1.52 m) fore to aft and 3’3” (0.99 m) deep with steps leading in. The windlass remote is stored inside.

A vertical windlass is mounted on the foredeck. The all chain rode leads to the bow roller with a Delta-style anchor. There is a single 12” (30.48 cm) cleat that leads to a chock mounted on the toe rail.

Entering the upper flybridge deck through the Plexiglas deck hatch on the port side are safety rails surrounding the opening. The hardtop is 7’ (2.13 m) above the deck at the hardtop’s lowest point, the wood accent in the center.

Forward of the upper flybridge deck hatch is a wood accented wet bar with prep area, molded in sink, trash bin receptacle and pull out, drawer-style refrigerator unit. There are deep drainage channels leading to either side of the bow roller and to each forward peak of the foredeck.

Behind the entry hatch on the port side of the upper flybridge deck is a space that could be better served with some bench seating. The toe rail mounted safety rails are 25” (63.5 cm) above the deck all the way around the bow area. Note the forward 12” 30.48 cm) cleats which are mounted on both the port and starboard sides.

Upper Flybridge Deck

Access to the upper flybridge deck is via a spiral style stairway mount on the aft deck. The upper flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is designed to be a highly social area with a wet bar, dinette and a large sun pad opposite the upper helm station. 64

Forward of the wet bar is a 70” (177.8 cm) long by 52” (132.08 cm) sun pad with pillowed back rests. MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2020

Like the lower helm, the upper helm is also starboard side mounted and equally uncluttered. There is a compass recessed in the helm’s brow in line with the tilt base mounted steering wheel.

On the starboard side of the upper flybridge deck is U-shaped bench seating that surrounds a solid wood fixed pedestal mounted table. On the inboard side of the upper helm is a single 16” (40.64 cm) multifunction display mounted in the dash.

In the middle of the table are two pop-up LED lamps that illuminate the table’s contents and those seated around the table. On the outboard side of the dash is a 7” (17.78 cm) Volvo Penta engine monitor display with the engine start stop switches below and a horn rocker switch. Adding a switch for the navigation lights to this helm would make it more practical.

Above, in the hardtop is a 5’ (1.52 m) by 8’ (2.44 m) manually operated sunroof.

Lower Deck Companionways

The main electrical panel is mounted on the aft most bulkhead in the master companionway.

Below the 40” (101.02 cm) wide by 11.5” (29.23 cm) vertical hull side window is storage. Directly across is space for the owner’s choice of an optional washer dryer, a wine chiller or a refrigerator.

For privacy, Fountaine Pajot made the MY 40 a split plan for the accommodations below with the master stateroom and en-suite head in the port hull and the guest cabins and shared day-head in the starboard hull.

Between the lower helm seat and the chart table is the 2’2” (0.66 cm) wide guest accommodations companionway stairs. Note the leather wrapped handrail. Abaft of the galley refrigerator is companionway stairs that lead down to the master stateroom with en-suite head.

Built into the inboard bulkhead in the 1’8” (0.51 m) wide guest companionway is a wine chiller opposite the guest/day-head doorway.

The hull side window in the aft guest stateroom is 42” (106.68 cm) wide by 17” (43.18 cm) tall with a 16” (40.64 cm) wide by 6” (15.24 cm) integrated opening port for ventilation.

Guest Accommodations

There are two guest cabins at each end of the guest accommodations companionway giving a fair amount of privacy for onboard guests. Aft is a guest stateroom with a single double berth and forward is a guest stateroom with the option of a single double berth or upper and lower bunk-style berths. The test boat had the upper and lower berths. Aft Guest Stateroom: The aft guest stateroom has 6’8” (2.03 m) of headroom at the foot of the double berth. The overhead is 4’9” (1.45 m) over the foot of the berth and 3’5” (1.04 m) over the head of the berth.

The double berth is 79” (200.66 cm) long by 63” (160.02 cm) wide. Two 12-volt fans are overhead and there are gooseneck reading lights on each side of the bed.

Opposite the bench built into the inboard side is a hanging locker.

Forward Guest Stateroom: The forward guest stateroom has 6’8” (2.03 m) of headroom over the single level deck.

Entering the forward guest stateroom there is a bench situated under the 44” (111.76 cm) wide by 13” (33.02 cm) tall hull side window with no ventilation port.

On the outboard side is a bench seat at the foot of the berth.

The upper berth is 80” (203.2 cm) long by 32” (81.28 cm) across. The lower berth is 78” (198.12 cm) long by 31” wide (78.74 cm) across. Each berth has a 12-volt fan mounted above and a gooseneck reading light.

Shared Guest/Day-Head

Mounted outboard between the forward and aft guest staterooms is the shared guest/day-head.

The 78” (198.12 cm) long by 62” (157.48) wide double berth faces the hull side window giving occupants a view through the hull side window with integrated opening port for ventilation. The vanity has storage below and a recessed sink in the solid surface countertop. Above is a hull side window with an opaque treatment and an integrated opening port for ventilation.

On each side of the berth are sconce-style lights with end table and upholstered bench seating with shelving on the inboard side forward. Above the window is a mirror inset in the bulwark paneling.

Forward on the outboard side is more shelving with a small desk below and an ottoman-style seat. The walk-in shower has a wand showerhead that can be handheld or attached to a fixed mount.

Master Stateroom

The master stateroom is built into the port side hull with a forward mounted en-suite head making it completely private. There is a 19” (48.26 cm) wide door that separates the master stateroom from the companionway. The headroom is 6’8” (2.03 m) consistent with much of the other spaces throughout the Fountaine Pajot MY 40. 68

Master En-Suite Head

Forward of the master stateroom is the master ensuite with an open concept walk-in shower, starboard side vanity, and separate head compartment.

Shown are the port and starboard mechanical space hatches with gas-assist struts to help keep them open. Note the 1.75” (4.44 cm) thick sound insulation on the 42” (106.68 cm) by 38” (96.52 cm) hatch.

On the inboard side of the compartment there is a mirror and shelving built over the vanity with storage below the sink built into the countertop.

The large openings allow stand up inspections and the ability to move around all sides of the engines.

On the outboard side is an open walk-in shower with a glass partition between the vanity and shower area. The hull side window has an opaque treatment for privacy.

Access to the mechanical spaces is via a stainless-steel ladder that bows around the Volvo Penta D6 IPS500 diesels. IPS400 diesels are optional.

Fully forward is a separate head compartment with a door for privacy.

Mechanical Spaces

On the inboard side are the house batteries mounted securely on a shelf. Abaft of the batteries is the swim platform hydraulics including the manual activation.

Options to Consider

To have consistent quality and to facilitate a backlog of orders for the MY 40, Fountaine Pajot has limited the number of options. They plan on selling over 90-percent of this model with twin IPS500 propulsion. However, Fountaine Pajot does offer the MY 40 with IPS400 propulsion. Observations

Unlike many power catamarans, the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 is not just a sailing catamaran that had the mast removed and larger engines installed. Fountaine Pajot designed, engineered, and built the MY 40 as a dedicated power catamaran specifically for IPS pod propulsion. In addition, Fountaine Pajot afforded the MY 40 with living and entertainment features custom designed from a blank sheet. The result is a well laid out yacht that accommodates with so much interior volume that the Fountaine Pajot MY 40 feels like a much larger yacht. The master suite alone will drive that point home, but there’s so much more to her MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2020

First off I want to say THANKS! to all of the wonderful folks who have answered my questions and offered tips & advice. I really appreciate it. Now here’s my latest question - We are sailing Out of the Blue on Sat 6/1 but only 8 will make the noon departure. 2 more are coming into Road Town on Sun 6/2 via the last Fast Ferry from STT. We need to figure out the best spot to pick them up that’s close to ferry dock for them & easy for us to get in & out of. What are your thoughts? And should we just use the dinghy & shuttle them from dock to boat? TIA for your help.

If they arrive in Road Town, It's about a 30 minute cab ride from the ferry terminal to Trellis Bay. In the interim, you can sail to Cooper Island, or Marina Cay, and still be close to Trellis. On day two of our time in the islands and we went to Oil Nut Bay for the first time. We went to the new dockside restaurant, pool and lounge area and it did not disappoint! The place was incredibly well done and the service was amazing. Jackie rocks - incredible story of her survival during Irma and we were so moved we had to jump up and give her a hug. Everything was beautiful and we will definitely be back!

he 49th BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival will take place from March 30 to April 5, 2020. The BVI Spring Regatta and the Sailing Festival is one of the top three Caribbean sailing events, with an average of 110 yachts per year, with 60% of the competitors from overseas. The BVI Spring Regatta is jointly owned by the Royal BVI Yacht Club and the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association. “The BVI is the mecca for sailing for three very important reasons,” Bob Phillips, Regatta Chairman said. “With its 64 islands and rocks, you never run out of interesting and challenging places to sail. We have protected water in the Sir Francis Drake Channel where most of the racing is done, so even when trade winds are blowing their normal 15, 18, and 20 knots, you still have comfortable conditions for most sailors with the opportunity for ocean-like conditions if desired. We have it all!” With all the choices that the BVI has with natural lay marks and islands, Race Committee has multiple course possibilities to tap into,

to mix up the racing each race day. Race officers initiate the design of courses on the water to match the tactical conditions, especially in shifting weather so that racing is always challenging. “Not only is the racing superb, but for those who want to combine a race holiday with cruising before or after, our islands are unbelievably lush, with anchorages every 20 minutes – it’s just a comfortable, beautiful place to sail,” Phillips added. Some 60% of the BVI Spring Regatta fleet comprises sailors who return year after year, excited for the racing conditions and the opportunity to meet new people as well as reunite with long-time sailing friends. Local BVI sailors never tire of their “backyard” racing. Mark Sanders from Tortola will be racing his Corsair 31 Island Hops in which he handily won the Sport Multihull class last year with an 8-point lead. “I have always enjoyed the BVI Spring Regatta from both a social perspective but more so the actual

racing element itself,” Sanders said. “The competition is fierce, with many talented racers from all over participating. Last year’s Round the Island race gave us record breaking conditions of SE 18-24kts, it was a day to remember. We took Island Hops in over 20kts for the first time, under jib and main alone, then rounded the eastern point of Scrub, launched our rather large Code, and took off like a robber’s dog! Island Hops was one of only five boats out of 55 to complete the rounding, which we did in under 3 hours – about the same as the Volvo 70, but on a slightly smaller budget!” Racing in the highly competitive sports multihull fleet and knowing local conditions intimately, Joe San Martin, from St Croix says the BVI Spring Regatta offers the perfect racing environment. He has raced the event 17 times on Piglet, his 23’ Newick trimaran, the first of the small trimarans to enter the Regatta almost 20 years ago. Since then, local BVI sailors have embraced sports trimarans

with some 8 boats expected to compete this year. “All those islands as rounding marks!” San Martin stated. “We absolutely love the venue and everything in Nanny Cay. The Nanny Cay staff are committed and involved in the event – there is no better in the Caribbean.” Dave Brennan, Principal Race Officer, has been officiating BVI Spring Regatta for almost 20 years. He’s raced all his life, starting in dinghies then big boats in offshore distance racing. “I’ve been to a lot of different venues and situations and just love racing in the BVI where the sailing is absolutely brilliant – we can sail in crystal-clear deep water right up to huge big rocks that come out of 300 feet of water. RORC Transatlantic Race Moves to January 2021

T

he Royal Ocean Racing Club has announced a new start date for the 7th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race. Traditionally held in November each year from Lanzarote to Grenada, the next edition will start from Calero Marinas Puerto Calero on January 9, 2021 and once again finish at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada. This date change is the most significant of a number of subtle changes the RORC is making to its Season Points Championships, which includes making the Rolex Middle Sea Race the first points race in the Championships, not the last, and also changes to the points factors for certain offshore races. “The RORC Committee felt that having the Rolex Middle Sea Race as the first race in the Cham84

pionship would encourage more owners to use the Autumn/Winter season for adventure sailing and include in their program the RORC Transatlantic Race and RORC Caribbean 600 before returning to the UK in the Spring,” comments RORC Racing Manager Chris Stone. “We also felt that starting the RORC Transatlantic Race in January provides more time for boats to get from Malta to Lanzarote, and we also know that the trade winds are further north and more consistent at that time.” José Juan Calero, CEO Calero Marinas comments: “On behalf of Calero Marinas, we couldn’t feel more honored to be working with the prestigious Royal Ocean Racing Club in the organization of this regatta. U.S. SailGP Team Announces Season 2 Roster

T

he 2020 U.S. SailGP Team’s roster of America’s Cup athletes, World Match Racing Champions, and Tokyo 2020 Olympic hopefuls that includes Rome Kirby, Taylor Canfield, Riley Gibbs and Hans Henken, is now bolstered by the addition of Peter Kinney, Scott Ewing, Ben Bardwell and Victor Diaz de Leon, who were recruited from across the country over the past four months. The U.S. SailGP Team also announced the addition of America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race winner Kimo Worthington as General Manager for the growing team. “We spent the off-season searching for the strongest and most passionate American athletes who would fit in well with our team and push our performance 86

to a new level,” said U.S. SailGP Team CEO and Helmsman Rome Kirby. “Our goal is to build a strong foundation of leadership, trust, and mutual respect for long-term success. Introducing the All-American U.S. SailGP Team Rome Kirby (30, Newport, RI) returns as helmsman and CEO, focused on redemption for Season 2. “As our team and the league continues to grow, I feel like we are well positioned for success both on and off the water. We’ve made important additions that are already paying dividends and Season 2 can’t begin soon enough,” he said. Wing Trimmer Riley Gibbs (24, Long Beach, CA) is back in the starting lineup having spent the majority of his off-season gaining valuable foiling time in his Tokyo 2020 pursuits as skipper of the Nacra 17. He and Nacra 17 teammate Anna Weis have been top performers during the Olympic qualification process, earning gold in the Pan American Games and securing their country an Olympic qualification slot. Gibbs and Weis are top contenders to be selected for the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team to compete in Tokyo this summer. In the flight controller slot, former world match racing champion Taylor Canfield (30, U.S. Virgin Islands) returns for Season 2. It’s been a productive off-season for Canfield, who served as tactician on board the winning M32 catamaran at November’s M32 World Championship in Lake Garda, in addition to extensive training on the Moth.

The team’s “rocket scientist” Hans Henken (26, Coronado, CA) returns to the U.S. SailGP Team’s in the grinder position. Henken, who graduated from Stanford with aero- and astronautical engineering degrees, campaigned his 49er in the off-season competing with teammate Judge Ryan at the 2019 49er World Championships in Auckland. A former collegiate football player, Peter Kinney (29, Newport Beach, CA), joins the U.S. SailGP Team as a grinder. He’s been actively racing on the popular M32 catamaran and Melges 32 circuits, in addition to competing in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. He and his team earned a Melges 32 world championship in 2016, in addition to taking home two distance racing titles on board Rio 100, setting the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta record, and Pacific Cup, both in 2016. Also new to the lineup is Ben Bardwell (41, Brownsville, VT), an experienced offshore and big boat sailor who trained with the U.S. SailGP Team late last season and was immediately hooked on the supercharged F50. The strength, stamina and athleticism that he’s known for throughout the Maxi, TP52 and match racing circuits will serve him well in his position as grinder. The youngest member of the U.S. SailGP Team at age 23, Scott Ewing (Miami, FL) joins the squad and is no stranger to foiling and going fast. Ewing has raced in the Extreme Sailing Series, Moths, Flying Phantoms, and competed with Next Generation USA in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in 2017; not to mention in 2016, he also brought home the 49er national championship. Finally, Victor Diaz de Leon (28, Miami, FL) rounds out the U.S. SailGP Team as reserve wing trimmer/ flight controller and will play an integral role in analyzing the team’s performance while growing the depth of experience in the highly technical wing 87


control systems. Diaz de Leon, regarded as one of the best Moth sailors in America, brings to the team significant foiling experience. Kirby hopes that the U.S. SailGP Team serves as an inspiration for young American sailors. “There are incredibly talented athletes developing in the U.S. pipeline and our goal is that they see our team, recognize there is a pathway, and aspire to join us.” Kimo Worthington as General Manager One of the few Americans to have won both the America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race, Kimo Worthington joins the team in Season 2 as General Manager, bringing experience from 10 professional sailing campaigns as both an athlete and GM. Kirby knows his management style well, having competed in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race with Puma Ocean Racing, managed by Worthington. “The speed at which this team has grown has been really exciting,” said Kirby. “I knew early this offseason that we could benefit from the experience Kimo brings and asked him to join us for Season 2.” In addition to managing both Puma Ocean Racing campaigns, Worthington also managed 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race competitor, Pirates of the Caribbean for Paul Cayard, and previously won the 1997-98 Whitbread Around the World Race as a crewmember aboard the winning EF Language Team. Add to this his work at North Sails, plus six America’s Cup campaigns, including a win on America3 in 1992, and the depth of experience he brings to the young American squad is immense. In fact, the excitement and opportunity of U.S. SailGP Team lured Worthington out of a short-lived retirement. He will oversee the team’s off-water management and commercial interests in Season 2 as the

team grows its sponsorship, logistics, performance, and marketing platforms, complimenting the team’s on-water goals. “Like every program in my career, I remove obstacles so each team member can do what they need to do to be successful,” said Worthington. “SailGP and the team are growing quickly and as general manager, I’ll keep the team running efficiently so the athletes can focus on winning races.” Looking Ahead to Season 2 Kirby recalls the frustration he and the team felt after a rollercoaster Season 1. “Going into Marseille in 3rd place, and then to end the season the way we did; it was incredibly tough,” he said. “But we are all fighters and immediately our focus turned to Season 2 success.” The team then jumpstarted its rebuilding process with an immersive leadership course with The McChrystal Group, led by General (Ret.) Stanley McChrystal, in November followed by a period of intense fitness testing and training camps coupled with the majority of the team sailing Moths as much as possible. At the same time, the team’s on-water performance has been supported by ongoing data analysis gathered from thousands of data points on the F50 during Season 1 enabled by the Oracle Cloud, which have contributed to a new playbook for Season 2. The U.S. SailGP Team now turns its attention to Sydney for the Season 2 debut February 28-29, 2020. The team will benefit from 10 additional days of training on the F50 granted to the U.S. team by the league before they line up against the six other SailGP teams: Australia, Japan, Great Britain, France, Spain and Denmark in the quest for the $1 million prize.

Great Britain SailGP Team, Presented by INEOS, Line-up

he Great Britain SailGP Team, presented by INEOS, has revealed its full team line-up ahead of the SailGP Season 2 opener in Sydney. The new look race crew has a 88

wealth of talent and experience onboard and is already a tight-knit team with five of the six members currently sailing together as part of INEOS TEAM UK’s America’s Cup challenge.

The world’s most successful Olympic sailor, Ben Ainslie, will helm the F50 while fellow Olympic gold medalist Iain Jensen joins as wing trimmer and the flight controller role is filled by Luke Parkinson.

Both Jensen and Parkinson have moved over to the Great Britain SailGP Team to join their America’s Cup teammates after competing with Japan in the first season SailGP. Completing the line-up in the grinder roles are Matt Gotrel, an Olympic gold medal winning rower, and Neil Hunter – both of whom sailed together with the British SailGP Team last year and are also part of the British America’s Cup challenge. Fellow returning teammate Richard Mason joins them. Ben Ainslie commented: “We are looking forward to getting out on the water and competing in a highly charged racing environment against some really tough competition. We can’t wait to get going. The squad is a combination of sailors from last year and members of the wider INEOS TEAM UK America’s Cup team. Each sailor has raced these boats before, and we know each other well. It’s now about putting that knowledge and experience together.” Iain Jensen, known as ‘Goobs’, has competed at two Olympic Games and in two America’s Cup campaigns and brings a significant amount of knowledge and experience to the British team. Commenting on the new modular wing due to be rolled out at event two in San Francisco, he said: “To have the ability to sail in more wind strengths and push these boats harder to is going to be a game changer.” Helping to control the F50 from the ‘cock-pit’ is flight controller Luke Parkinson (known as ‘Parko’) who has competed in both the America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race, including winning the 2014/15 edition with Abu Dhabi

Ocean Racing. Parkinson will control the main system on the F50, which alters the rudders and foils. Neil Hunter, at 24, is the youngest member of the team and was the youngest sailor to compete in the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017, where he was also part of the British team that won the Youth America’s Cup. Known as one of sailing’s fittest grinders, he now looks forward to his second consecutive SailGP season with the Great Britain SailGP Team. Alongside Hunter in the grinder roles are returning Great Britain SailGP Team members Matt Gotrel and Rich Mason. Gotrel came back to sailing two years ago after crossing over to rowing during his university years, which culminated in winning Olympic gold for Team GB at Rio 2016. Mason is a highly experienced professional sailor who has competed in various catamaran classes including the M32 Series, GC32 Racing Tour and the Extreme Sailing Series. His biggest achievement to date, however, was on one hull when he

completed the gruelling, singlehanded Solitaire du Figaro race. Team CEO Chris Draper meanwhile steps off the F50 to focus on running the team from dry land. Commenting on the season ahead he said: “We can’t wait to get back out racing after a long break following the final in Marseille last year. Sydney is a fantastic venue and we’ve come such a long way since this time last year. With the combined experience these athletes have, we’re feeling excited about the year ahead. The team is just planning to get out there and put everything we learnt in Season 1 into practice.” Great Britain will take on six other nations including reigning champions Australia, Denmark, France, Japan, Spain and the United States when the season gets underway in Sydney. New Look for Japan SailGP Team in Season 2

A

fter a very successful first season, just missing out on the championship trophy, the Japan SailGP Team has unveiled a new lineup for SailGP Season 2 in 2020. With the objective of increasing the nationality rule for Season 2 from 40% to 60%, the new team in 2020 features a new Japanese sailor on the boat, while the team bids farewell to two seasoned veterans. Nathan Outteridge remains at the helm Outteridge will again be returning as skipper and helmsman – having led the team to a very successful first season in 2019, winning the New York SailGP and narrowly missing out on winning the overall championship in Marseille. There is no doubt Outteridge will be keen to have another shot at the top prize in 2020. Outteridge has been working on reshaping the sailing team and is confident that he has put together a strong squad for the second season of 90

the global championship featuring the world’s fastest on-water racing. New wing trimmer The team is happy to announce the starting lineup for the Japan SailGP Team for Season 2, adding a new face in Ayden Menzies. Menzies of Australia will be joining the team as wing trimmer replacing the outgoing Iain Jensen. Menzies has big shoes to fill but the team is confident that he will be capable of stepping up to the challenge. Menzies has a wealth of experience with the F50, he worked with SailGP during the sea trials of the boats in 2018 and has been a member of Japan’s shore team, running the wing program in Season 1. He has a long standing sailing relationship with Outteridge, way back to youth sailing days where the two of them won consecutive gold medals at the Youth World Sailing Championship, needless to say, MULTIHULLS Magazine | January/February 2020


Menzies will fit in nicely on board with Outteridge and the crew. “I am hugely excited to step into the wing trimming role, replacing Iain will be a tough task but I’m up for the challenge and counting down to the first race of the season,” said Menzies. Sitting just in front of Menzies onboard will be Leo Takahashi, who is making the move from grinder to flight controller for the second season of SailGP. Takahashi, who is also campaigning for the Tokyo 2020 Games, spent the majority of Season 1 at the front of the boat alongside Yuki Kasatani on the grinding handles, providing the power to trim the 24-meter wing sail. This year Takahashi will trade muscle and brute strength for finesse and accuracy, as the young Japanese athlete pilots the boat around the racecourse at speeds up to 50 knots / 60 mph. “I am really excited for my new role. It comes with a lot of responsibility and new challenges,” said Takahashi. “Yes, it will be no easy task, but I have had a great season of lessons last year and a great team environment to learn fast. It was great to have Luke and Goobs (Iain) last year, it was great to learn from them and the wealth of knowledge was invaluable to the team.” Yuki Kasatani from Osaka will be back as the number one grinder for another shot at the championship. Kasatani is infamously known for crash tackling the grinding pedestal during a particularly crazy day of racing in Cowes (UK). Kasatani was the powerhouse of the team in Season 1 and has spent the off-season training in his home city of Tokyo, putting countless hours in the gym to ensure he can be bigger, stronger and more prepared for the season ahead. “In Season 2 there will be a lot of new things such as the different sized wings and the new teams from Denmark, Great Britain, and Spain,” said Kasatani.

Ayden Menzies, the new wing trimmer for Japan SailGP Team

“All of the teams will be preparing for Season 2 based on the data and experience from Season 1 so the races would be tougher, which I like.” After being voted as “most improved team member”, it comes as no surprise that Tim Morishima has been promoted to the starting list for Season 2. With Takahashi moving into the flight controller position, Morishima steps off the bench into the starting line up as grinder/jib trimmer. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Japan SailGP Team as a full time athlete. It’s such a privilege being able to work within a team of this professional dynamic, and I’m so proud to represent Japan on the world stage in the top sailing league that exists.” Said Morishima. Having started with the team in Sydney as a volunteer helping the shore crew, it quickly became apparent that not only was Morishima handy on the tools, but he also had the skills and attitude that the sailing team was looking for. By the second SailGP event in San Francisco, Morishima competed in his first race as a grinder, which resulted in a race win. Morishima spent the rest of the season as a reserve grinder and made the most of having some very experienced athletes to learn from, making fantastic progress throughout the year. He now finds himself in the starting list and the team looks forward to seeing him continue to develop throughout the year. “It has been a challenging journey getting here, but to finally make it to this level is a dream come true,” said Morishima. “This season is going to be even more exciting than the first: 7 teams, 5 venues, I can’t wait to show the world what Japanese sailing is made of!” This year Yugo Yoshida (Karatsu, Saga) will be shifting his focus to helping his wife Ai Kondo win Japan a gold medal in the Olympic 470 class. Yoshida was an important member of the team in Season 1 serving the team as a grinder and training up the 91


younger Japanese talent. The team looks forward to continuing to work with Yugo once the Olympics are over. Farewell to Iain Jensen and Luke Parkinson Two-time Olympic medallist Iain Jensen (wing trimmer) and around the world race winner Luke Parkinson (flight controller) joined the Japan SailGP Team for the first season on a one-year contract with the goal of training up the young Japanese athletes. The two highly accomplished athletes have done a fantastic job sharing their wealth of knowledge throughout the team and the involvement of the pairing

was crucial to the team’s success in 2019. The Japan SailGP Team would like to thank Iain and Luke for everything that they brought to the team in 2019 and wishes them all the best in their future endeavors. “We have always known that Iain and Luke would only be with us for our first season so, in the background, we have been working hard to capture their knowledge and transfer it onto the rest of the team,” said Japan SailGP Team helm and CEO Nathan Outteridge. “I have been good friends with both Iain and Luke for a long time and I personally want to thank them for the impact that they have made to our team and want to wish them all the best for the future endeavors.”

Spanish Line-up Confirmed for SailGP Season 2

T

he Spain SailGP Team features Olympians and world champions from across the country, and will be the youngest team to compete in the world’s fastest sail racing. Jordi Xammar will helm the Spanish entry following the 2020 Olympic Games, with SailGP veteran Phil Robertson serving in an interim capacity to start the season. The Spanish squad includes Xammar, 26, of Barcelona (helm); Florian Trittel, 25, of Barcelona (wing trimmer); Luis Bugallo, 24, of Vigo (wing trimmer); Joel Rodríguez, 22, of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (flight controller); Diego Botín, 26, of Santander (flight controller); Joan Cardona, 21, Palma de Mallorca (grinder); Iago López Marra, 29, of A Coruña (grinder); and Mateu Barber, 27, of Palma de Mallorca. Xammar finished 12th in the 470 class at the 2016 Olympic Games and will be a medal contender for Spain at Tokyo 2020, having already secured his position for his second Olympic appearance. 92

Robertson, 32, of Auckland, who steered the China team to podium success in Season 1, will start the season as interim helm to help accelerate the team’s learning curve on the F50. Xammar said: “Ever since SailGP launched last year, I knew that I wanted to be involved and represent my country. I am so excited

to put together a team and think SailGP is a fantastic opportunity to engage a mainstream audience in the sport of sailing. the 2017 Youth America’s Cup in Bermuda. Those six plus López Marra have all been part of Spanish Impulse, a group initially formed for the Youth America’s Cup, and now with a focus on the Olympics and developing athletes in highperformance foiling boats. Trittel will take on the role of wing trimmer on the F50. He is no stranger to high speeds on the water – an accomplished high-performance sailor who turned his attention to kite board racing, Trittel is expected to represent Spain in the Olympics this year, competing in the foiling Nacra 17 class. In the flight controller position will be 2016 Olympian Botín, who is on track to represent Spain in Tokyo in the 49er class. Two-time European champion and ninth-

place finisher at the Rio Games in the 49er alongside Spain SailGP teammate López Marra, this successful pairing will be counting on its strong relationship to succeed in both SailGP and on the Olympic circuit this season. For the youngest team member, Cardona, SailGP offers the opportunity to face his sailing idols. Growing up sailing a Laser before stepping up to the Finn class – in which he’s a U23 world champion – Cardona cites British helm Sir Ben Ainslie and reigning SailGP champion Tom Slingsby as his two biggest sailing heroes. He is looking to not only meet them on the SailGP racecourse but also mirror their Olympic successes this season. Spain SailGP Team CEO María del Mar de Ros said: “Competing
