News Briefs Remembering the Founder of North Sails Lowell North Lowell North, the founder of North Sails, has passed away.

Nicknamed “The Pope” by his peers, Lowell began his sailmaking career at the age of 14 when his father purchased a Star with cotton sails. The father and son team came in last in every race, motivating the young Lowell to recut the mainsail. The rest, as they say, is history.

As an aeronautic/aerospace engineer, Lowell knew he could build a better sail through rigorous testing and incremental improvement. His methodical and scientific approach to sailmaking changed the industry forever, and it also helped him prevail in the sport.

In 1945, at the age of 16, he won the Star World Championship when he crewed for his friend Malin Burnham. Lowell had made the sails for the boat and it was clear

even at his young age that he had a sailmakers eye. Lowell went on to dominate the Star class and over the following 24 years garnered an additional four gold medals, five silver medals and two bronze medals. He also won a bronze medal in the Dragon class at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 and a gold medal in the Star class at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968. In the 1977 America’s Cup

defender series he skippered the 12-meter yacht Enterprise. In 2011 he was inducted into the Sailing Hall of Fame.

Lowell originally started the company in a rented 20 x 80 foot space at the B Street Pier in downtown San Diego and now North Sails has over 150 lofts in 29 countries around the world, with sales well in excess of $150 million annually.

Being an engineer, he brought his expertise to sailmaking, which at the time was considered more of an art than science. He applied a rigorous, methodical approach to designing sails with the goal of building sails that were faster than his competition, and it worked.

The foundation laid by Lowell in 1957 has permanently shaped the sailing culture.

Among his many qualifications, he is an accredited Marine Surveyor with the European Certification Bureau (ECB) in Holland, a South African Sailing (SAS) Safety Officer, a Certified SAMSA small boat surveyor, an NMMA Conformance specialist and an IMMARBE tonnage surveyor.

Morton is a qualified engineer with a BSc (Eng.) from the University of Cape Town. After working in both the construction and consulting environments he founded IT companies that produce programs for both the aviation and engineering industries. He is a keen sailor and has crewed on many St Francis 50 catamaran delivery trips along the South African coast.

Rorke Miller has been appointed as their broker and the company is excited that with Rob, Morton and Rorke at the helm they will steer St Francis marine into the future with steady hands.

All boats make their way to Two Harbors arriving by early afternoon.

5:00 pm – Meet and Greet – Meet at the back patio at the Harbor Reef Restaurant for Pu Pu’s and a no-host bar.

Friday, August 16:

9:00 am – 3Bs… Breakfast, Bloodys and Boat Talk – Meet in the social room at Isthmus Yacht Club (large red lodge building up the road from Two Harbors) for breakfast and Bloody Marys. There will be speakers giving talks about various cruising and sailing topics. Mandatory skipper’s meeting to follow.

Afternoon – Free time to explore the Isthmus. Hiking, bike riding, inland jeep tours, tours of the IYC club house, fishing or just enjoying the island.

5 pm to ? – Dinner on the Beach at Two Harbors.

Dinner on the beach at the main bandstand (next to the market). 3Ds…Dinner, Drinks and Dancing.

9:00 am – Race Around the Island All boats leave their moorings by 9 am and make their way west to Parsons Landing for an 11:00 am race start to sail around Catalina to Cat Harbor where we will all raft up in the mooring field.

5:00 pm – Group Photo Shoot 5:30 pm – Wandering boat visits for drinks and appetizers. Prizes will be awarded for the best theme decorations and appetizers. Music on Barramundi.

Sunday, August 18:

All boats depart moorings and continue around the back side of Catalina arriving in Avalon where we will pick up a mooring and spend the afternoon exploring Avalon and have a no-host group dinner at a TBD restaurant.

At the core of the WS700 sensor are new electronics that enable

accurate measurements of wind angle and speed. The measurement error is less than ±0.5 degrees for wind direction and ±0.2 knots for wind speed.

Design Aerodynamically designed, the WS700 allows for smooth airflow and reduces the effect of turbulence around the body, to maintain data accuracy. The design was optimized through more than 500 hours of wind-tunnel testing and more than 200,000 hours on the water under various conditions.

In addition, a new one-piece vane design provides improvements in balance, aerodynamics and shock loads, while a new smooth balance weight with recessed mounting keeps the flow turbulence-free and steady.

The WS700 comes mounted on a carbon spar of four different lengths, between two feet, seven inches and five feet, ten inches (0.8 and 1.8 meters), which elevates the sensor above sail-plan disturbance. Positioning the sensor in undisturbed airflow dramatically reduces uncertainties that come from turbulence and adds precision to the wind angle and speed measurements. The sensor is compatible with NMEA 2000® networks via an interface (optional), H5000 and WTP system.

arly in our cruising, I learned that it is very easy to ruin scallops. We had helped a fisherman who was out of gas and as a thank-you gift, he gave us a dozen beautiful scallops that his son had just gathered. Although I carefully followed a recipe, I ended up with something that more resembled hockey pucks than a seafood delicacy.

Then our friends Robin and Martin invited us aboard their trawler, The Cat’s Meow, for dinner . . . scallops.

Robin’s scallops – tossed with pasta – simply melted in my mouth. How did she do it?

Robin explained that basically you don’t want to Garnish: “cook” a scallop, as they get tough very easily (yeah, shredded or shaved Parmesan for topping (optional) I knew that!). Instead, she said, “You just want to introduce them to warmth.”

Cook the other ingredients in the dish, then turn the heat off and add the scallops to the pan. Toss everything together, then put the cover on for a few minutes until the scallops are just opaque. I couldn’t believe it was so simple and gave such great results!

Instructions Cook pasta according to package directions, using the bouillon cube in place of salt.

At the same time, sauté the vegetables in the oil and garlic (if using olives, add them in the next step instead). When the onions, mushrooms and/or artichokes are just golden, add the olives and Italian seasoning, mix well and heat through.

Drain pasta and add to the skillet, tossing to mix.

Turn the stove off and add the scallops to the pan, tossing to mix. Cover and let sit about 3 minutes for small scallops and 5 to 7 minutes for large ones, until the scallops are just opaque.

Serve immediately topped with a sprinkling of cheese (optional).

Notes, Substitutions and Variations For a dairy-free alternative, just leave out the Parmesan cheese. It’s just as tasty.

On a cool day, Beef & Banana Curry will warm up the cabin as it cooks and you as well when it’s meal time. It freezes beautifully as a make-ahead meal (and you can freeze cooked rice in a separate container, too), but don’t add the bananas and cashews until you heat it up to serve.

eeting people and trying foods from all over is a fun part of cruising. Dave and I enjoy getting to know not just the “locals” wherever we are, but also the other cruisers. Over the years, we’ve learned to make a number of dishes from the people we’ve met.

Curry from Brits. Sushi from Californians. All sorts of seafood from people who lived along the coast of numerous countries. Spring rolls from a ChineseAmerican. Mole and tacos from Mexicans. Pupusas from Salvadorans. Bobotie (similar to meatloaf) from South Africans.

It usually starts with a casual conversation at happy hour. “You mean you’ve never had _____? Come on over tomorrow and I’ll show you how to make it.”

Fun is had, a great meal prepared and recipes are swapped. Another great day of being a cruiser.

That was how we first had Beef & Banana Curry.

1 pound chuck roast, trimmed and cut into 1” cubes 1 medium onion, diced 2 tablespoons minced garlic (or 2 teaspoons garlic powder) 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 cans (16 ounces each) diced tomatoes (not drained) 1-1/2 cup raisins 4 teaspoons curry powder, or to taste (Curry powder varies considerably in spiciness and heat. If you are not sure how hot yours may be, or prefer a milder flavor, start with 1 teaspoon and gradually increase to taste) ½ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper (or to taste) 2 bananas, sliced 1 cup cashews or walnuts 4 servings cooked rice

Lightly brown the meat, onion and garlic in the oil over medium-high heat.

Add the tomatoes, raisins, curry powder, salt and pepper. Stir to mix, then simmer for about 2 hours until meat is tender. Stir occasionally and add a bit of water if the mixture gets dry (it should be about the consistency of chili). If freezing, do so at this point.

While curry is cooking, prepare rice.

Mix bananas in and cook 15 minutes to heat through.

Serve over rice and garnish with cashews.

Notes, Substitutions and Variations Use ground beef, ground turkey or boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut in 1” cubes instead of chuck roast. Reduce simmer time to 30 to 45 minutes.

My basic recipe follows, but you can vary it considerably according to what’s available and your preferences. Make a keto/LCHF version by omitting the tortillas and serving in a cup or on a plate; use gluten-free corn tortillas for a gluten-free version; go dairy-free by omitting the cheese; leave out the meat for a vegetarian option.

love dawn on the boat, whether we’re getting an early start on the day’s travel or just enjoying life aboard. With a mug of steaming coffee in hand, we watch the sun rise and the world come to life. More often than not, we eat breakfast on deck, watching the birds diving for fish and, if we’re lucky, even spot a dolphin or two.

One unforgettable morning in the La Mona anchorage of Bahia de Los Angeles in the Sea of Cortez, we watched two adult dolphins teaching a baby to leap into the air. One adult at a time would execute a perfect arc, then the youngster would try. The first few times, it barely poked its head out of the water.

Half an hour later, it got totally out of the water. Even though it was more of a belly flop than arc, we felt like applauding!

Whether we’re at anchor or on the move, we enjoy breakfast burritos. If we’re eating outside, I can easily wrap them in foil so they’ll stay warm on a chilly morning. And if we’re underway, they’re nice, tidy and easy to hold at the helm. Best of all, they’re hearty enough to carry us from early morning to lunch time.

Ingredients 4 ounces sausage ham or bacon, cut in small pieces 1/4 onion diced 1/4 green pepper diced or little bit of a spicy pepper, minced 1 tomato diced 2 eggs lightly beaten 2 large tortillas OR 4 small tortillas (corn or flour) 1/4 cup shredded cheese 1/4 cup salsa Instructions Sauté the meat, onion, pepper and tomatoes over medium-high heat until the meat is done (if using bacon, cook it partially before adding the other items).

Add the eggs and cook to your preferred doneness.

At the same time, heat a dry skillet over high heat.

When hot, heat the tortillas one at a time by placing them in the skillet for about 15 seconds per side (they will get a few light brown spots on them – if they have any black spots, heat the rest a few seconds less).

Place a hot tortilla on a plate, add half the egg mix, half the cheese and a bit of salsa and roll the tortilla up. If you use a large tortilla, you can first fold the bottom up about one-quarter of the way, then roll it.

If you use small tortillas, make four burritos with Wardrobe Guest cabin one-quarter of the ingredients on each.

ince discovering that I have Type 2 diabetes, my eating style has changed drastically. No more skillet meals. No more pasta. Simply put, diabetics are carb-intolerant and I eat very few carbs each day — and those that I do are slow-acting.

That means that I eat far more “plain” meats, cheese and eggs. But when I say “plain” meats, what I really mean is that they aren’t mixed with other ingredients, not that they don’t have tons of flavor!

This Spicy Grilled Pork Tenderloin is naturally very low carb, easy to make and absolutely delicious.

Add in the fact that it keeps heat out of the boat or kitchen by grilling and lets the cook be part of the pre-dinner socializing, and it’s a real winner.

My low carb way of eating is even more restrictive than a keto diet, so this recipe is also good for those doing keto. Plus it’s gluten-free and dairy-free.

The only somewhat unusual ingredient is ground jalapeno. You can find it in the spice aisle in many Mexican groceries, in some general supermarkets, and on Amazon.

However, if you can’t find it, you can substitute additional cayenne pepper. It’s still a great rub!

P.S. Since I get questions every time I mention grilling, I’m still loving my new Magma grill for the boat — use it at least five nights a week!

Delicious keto/LCHF grilled pork tenderloin that everyone will love! Spicy rub using three types of pepper plus cinnamon, cloves, cumin, mustard and garlic. Only 4g carbs!

Course: Main Dish Cuisine: Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Grill, Keto/ LCHF, Mexican/Southwestern Servings: 2 Calories: 192 kcal Ingredients 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon ground mustard 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground jalapeno 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cumin 10 ounces pork tenderloin Instructions Combine all spices in a small bowl.

Lay tenderloin on waxed paper or aluminum foil.

Sprinkle with half the spice mixture and rub in. Roll tenderloin over and rub with remaining spice mixture.

Fold wax paper (or foil) completely around tenderloin and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours.

Remove from wax paper and grill over medium heat with lid closed. Turn over every 5 minutes for a total of 30 minutes, or until thermometer inserted into the center reads 145 degrees F. Let stand 3 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes, Substitutions and Variations Prepared mustard can be used instead of dry mustard. Use 2 teaspoons and mix well.

If one wants the thrill of putting up sails and harnessing the wind, or indeed if one intends to sail long distances across oceans or circumnavigate the globe, then a sailing catamaran is the way to go. Not only are sailing catamarans comfortable and can be as luxurious as one chooses in the case of

custom builds, but they can sail long distances across oceans with fair speed, and of course, economically. They do, however, require wind.

Wind, or the lack thereof, is a big motivation for the growth of the large power or expedition catamaran market. Expedition multihulls are revolutionizing cruising, and for many good reasons: To begin with, if one is building a large custom catamaran, the expense of the mast, boom, spars, rigging and sails is considerable – and the sails will need to be replaced every so often at significant

expense. One does not in turn save much on the engines and other systems, as these are still very much needed.

Then there is the obvious issue of wind. Any sailor who has done enough exploring of tropical islands will know that a lot of the time, one does not see many hoisted sails for lack of wind or because it’s in the wrong direction.

If one is looking for the flexibility to move around fast and effortlessly, exploring tropical cruising destinations, then an expedition catamaran is definitely the vessel of choice as one is not reliant on

wind. Many yachties also find it attractive to not have to hassle with sails, sheets and halyards and to have to the flexibility of managing a big luxurious catamaran with very few crew.

Expedition catamarans also give more scope for a large comfortable flybridge, adding another level and a lot more deck space to a catamaran. There is also the flexibility to be able to motor under bridges and power lines if one wants to explore rivers.

Large power catamarans also make ideal day charter boats, which can accommodate large numbers of people with ease of operation.

With the engine technology today, fuel consumption and cruising speeds are good, and the range of an expedition catamaran allows one to motor long distances. As an example, total fuel capacity on Two Ocean Marine’s Open Ocean 750 Expedition Catamaran is 8,120 liters and the fuel consumption for both motors at 8 knots is around 1,8 liters per NM and 3.4 liters at 10 knots. So, at 8 knots, her range would be more than 3,400 NM. That gives the option to motor considerable distances.

New Boat

A Ferry Building Bonanza for Cape Town Six in Eight Months from Composites Manufacturer Oliver Dawson with More in the Pipeline.

A

plan to up-skill ex-militants from Nigeria has turned into a potential boat-building bonanza for Cape Town’s Oliver Dawson, who has thus far built five ferries for the Lagos State government and has potential orders for several more.

Composites manufacturing expert Dawson is currently managing his yard inside the Nautic Africa facility in Paarden Island where he employs around 30 people. He is also using the ferry project as a skills training initiative to develop students within the industry. SABBEX executive head Vanessa Davidson, who fielded the initial approach from a well-known Nigerian businessman eight years ago, facilitated the deal.

Mold construction began in April, and the first four boats were complete by the end of November – a rapid turnaround made possible by a dedicated team, Dawson told SABBEX. 44

The initial phase was not without the usual administrative hiccups, which had caused some minor contractual delays. However these issues had been addressed and things were back on track.

floors and a watertight bottom compartment to address safety concerns. “From a commercial ferry perspective, we are 100% happy that it’s a safe boat.

It is quite standard, no bells and whistles,” Dawson said. “All our materials are locally sourced, with resin from Durban and all our reinforcements from Paarl. The foam is imported, but as a percentage it is fairly small.”

He said an attractive build price was key to landing the deal, which he hoped would serve as springboard for a much larger manufacturing operation, potentially on a par with the volumes seen down the road at Robertson & Caine.

Explained Dawson: “I think it’s because we priced the thing fairly and are not out to rip anybody off.

There are no shortcuts, no quick turnaround cash.

If we can make x amount off each boat and fill ten build spots a year I’m happy — that is where we are doing things slightly differently.”

“We are happy with a lower margin.”

Dawson believes the ferry is suited to other maritime sectors, such as tourism and shark cage diving.

With the necessary building blocks and marketing strategy in place the company hopes to upscale production with a view to becoming a global player – if all goes according to plan that is, and the market plays its part. “The whole project for us was always an opportunity for us to test our recipe and I think we have worked out what that is. I am sure there will be some curve balls coming, but for now things are positive,” Dawson said.

Increased production would also allow for bigger training opportunities and potentially more stakeholder support in the form of training budget. “We have formally trained 110 people in the last few months on this project and some of them have gone on to find work in other boat building companies,” he said. “I have an amazing team of guys and girls that come from various companies and without them it wouldn’t have been possible”.

Mission Statement

After the positive response the company received for its 36’ (10.97 m) catamaran, Aquila unveiled its 32’ (9.75 m) version at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November 2018. The boat is designed for day cruising with a large swim platform, cockpit and bow, including the wet bar that comes

Features Inspection

The Stern. The easiest way to board the 32 will be by stepping on the swim platform that extends 3’ (0.91 m) abaft the motors and spans 11’4” (3.45 m) across the stern. Our test boat had the optional hydraulic lift that raises and lowers the platform with the push of a button. When the platform is in the raised position, on the trailing edge is a four-step ladder with sturdy rails on each side. The four rungs are compliant with American Boat and Yacht Council standards for recreational boats. Additionally, there is a set of 49

stairs between the outboard motors that lower with the platform to make it easy to reboard and they lie flush as part of the deck when the platform is raised.

While it appears that the 32 is designed with the twin outboard motors integrated into the stern, a more accurate way to describe it is that the swim platform extends abaft the motors. There’s a center passageway between the motors and then the platform is unobstructed behind them.

The swim platform extends a full 3’ abaft the motors to keep swimmers clear of the propellers.

Aquila designed the stern and platform so that the motors can still be raised out of the water, and because the platform is 3’ (0.91 m) aft of the propellers, it’s highly unlikely that a swimmer would come anywhere near them. The motors have stainless steel guards that encircle the powerheads and the cowlings have anti-scuff strips on them that lift hinged sections of the cockpit lounge when the motors are raised. Future models will have gas struts on the seat cushions to help lift them when the motors are tilted.

Three stairs make it easy to descend from the stern passageway to the swim platform when it’s lowered into the water.

The centrally positioned boarding ladder has four steps and the sturdy rails should make it easy for even a SCUBA diver in full gear to climb up.

The design provides the unobstructed swim platform we expect from a sterndrive with all of the efficiency benefits that come with twin outboards.

This anti-scuff strip on the motor’s cowling keeps the cover from getting scratched when it pushes up the cushion over the splash well.

The Cockpit

A gate closes the passageway from the stern to the 32’ (9.75 m) cockpit. The EVA foam decking feels good underfoot and the way the cockpit is laid out gives the boat a conversational and entertaining atmosphere. It’s clear that Aquila’s designers took full advantage of the boat’s 12’8” (3.86 m) beam to create a cockpit as large as possible given the dimensions of the vessel.

To enhance the versatile feel, the rear seat backrests can be moved to create aft-facing chaise-style lounges. Additionally, the hardtop has 6’8” (1.78 m) of headroom and when the time comes to pull a tube or adventurous boarder, the ski tow is installed on the trailing edge of the hardtop. Our test boat had speakers and manual skylights in the hardtop.

Optional electrically actuated skylights are available. Because of the depth provided by the sponsons, there are nine extra-large lockers under the seats throughout the Aquila 32.

The backrests for the cockpit lounges can be positioned for forward- or aft-facing travel. Notice the quality diamond-stitch pattern in the upholstery.

To starboard the portable table can be set up quickly to create a spot for enjoying lunch or a post-cruise cocktail or it can be lowered and covered with a cushion to create a large lounge.

Amidships

We like that the cockpit and helm deck are all on the same level. To port, the backrest for the boothstyle lounge can be adjusted so two people can sit facing forward. Just ahead in the walkway to the bow is the outdoor galley, which has a refrigerator, a sink, a wastebasket and storage. The cover for the sink has a hole so that a person can stick in his fingers to remove it.

Aquila took the plug that was cut out to make the hole and glued it in place so thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dedicated storage for the cover. With it secured, the cover now becomes a fixed cutting board.

The cockpit galley is compact and has the refrigerator in the base with the pull-out wastebasket alongside.

The faucet for the sink folds away when not needed and a cover slips into the recess in the countertop.

The backrest to port can also be positioned so two people can sit across from the helm facing forward.

The removable sink cover secures in place on this knob, creating a secure raised cutting board.

For added comfort, there are folding footrests for the passengers seating on the port amidships lounge.

The Helm

To starboard, the helm has a 12” (30.48 cm) Raymarine multifunction display and a 4” (10.16 cm) Mercury VesselView screen in the faux carbon-fiber dash panel. There’s space for Aquila to install twin 12” (30.48 cm) screens. Our test model also had Mercury’s ActiveTrim control.

Accessory switches are clearly labeled and illuminate when lit and the glovebox has storage plus connectivity plugs. The helm seat is a 48” (1.22 m)-wide doublewide model with separate fold-up bolsters and the angled footrest is finished in the same EVA foam as the cockpit decking.

The driver can rest his feet on the raised angled support just ahead and to the left of the tilt steering wheel all the accessory switches illuminate when activated.

Our test model had the single Raymarine 12” (30.48 cm) screen plus the compass and 4” (10.16 cm) VesselView screen. There’s space for a second multi-function display should an owner want one.

Beneath the Raymarine screen, the glovebox has a cushioned bottom to smooth the ride for cell phones plus connectivity plugs in the upper righthand corner.

Mercury’s digital controls are to starboard in comfortable reach.

The Bow

While the cockpit and helm deck are on the same level, it’s a 6” (15.2 cm) step up to the Aquila 32’s bow, which has an air dam and section of the windshield that can be closed to keep wind from rushing into the cockpit. The bow has a 48” (1.22 m)-wide lounge to port and a 28” (.07 m)-wide seat to starboard. Both have fold-down armrests and measure 48” (1.22 m) fore to aft.

The Area can also be Filled in with a Sun Pad. There’s storage under the cushions and in large fender compartments outboard on each side forward. They flank an anchor locker that houses the windlass. In the gunwales there are grabrails and speakers.

Belowdecks

The Aquila 32’s bow has a narrower seat to starboard and a wider one to port. Grab handles are outboard and across the bow.

While the Aquila 32 is primarily a dayboat, the belowdecks area has a cabin and head that could accommodate a couple for a weekend.

The Cabin

The bow can be filled in with a cushion to create an area where adults could stretch out to tan or kids can hang out and play.

Outboard of the cockpit galley, a hatch opens to access the Aquila 32’s cabin, which has 6’1” (1.85 m) of headroom. We measured the berth at 80” by 55” (2.03 m x 1.4 m), which is close to queen size (80” x 60”/2.03 m x 1.52 m). There are hullside windows, a fan and a microwave oven if someone needs a coffee.

A switch panel has the climate and battery controls and monitors. Removable covers provide access to the hydraulic lift pump and air conditioning and required batteries.

Aquila covers all of the details with raised grabrails, beverage holders, and speakers on each side in the bow.

The berth is 5” (12.7 cm) shy of a queen, but should be comfortable for two average-sized adults getting away for the weekend. Feet go forward where the pillows are.

The centerline ground tackle system needs some work. There is no cleat to tie-off the anchor rode, and even though a bridal from the port and starboard bows will be used in most cases, we’d like to see one here for the lunch hook. The access to the rode locker is too narrow, but there is a washdown bib at right to clean chain and anchor.

The outboards spun 15” pitch Mercury Revolution 4 four-blade stainless-steel propellers. Revving them up to 5900 rpm, we hit a top speed of 39.4 mph.

The hullside window has an opening port so fresh air can be let in.

The Head

Ahead of the helm in the console, the private head has 5’10” (1.78 m) of headroom and there is a forward window that lets in natural light. The toilet empties into a 21-gallon (80 L) holding tank and there’s a pull-up shower plus storage.

Best Cruise: Pulling back the throttles we found best cruise at 4500 rpm, where the boat ran 26.2 mph and burned 26.6 gph. That works out to 1 mpg and a range of 223 statute miles with 10 percent of the boat’s 252-gallon (954-L) fuel capacity in reserve.

At 600 rpm, the boat ran 2.6 mph and at 1000 rpm, we recorded 4.6 mph.

In acceleration tests, the Aquila 32 planed in 5.6 seconds and ran through 20 mph in 8.1 seconds and through 30 mph in 15.2 seconds.

Handling

The Aquila 32 has a CE Category B Offshore rating. Her twin hulls have integrated spray rails that worked well, producing a dry ride. Between the hulls under the deck, a wave-breaking pod eliminates the sneeze effect when a wave traps air beneath the hull and shoots spray forward, according to the builder.

During our test, we had calm conditions so we headed offshore to find some waves. She had plenty of buoyancy and the deck remained dry when we took on head-seas and re-entry was gentle. The ride in following seas was stable and the sharp bows cut through the waves easily. In turns, she maintained a level attitude and even in harder turns than most captains would attempt, there was no ventilation of the propellers. She did not sneeze during our tests.

Observations

The trip down into the Aquila 32’s head is made via three steps from the deck down into the compartment.

Performance

The Numbers: Our test boat had an LOA of 32’7” (9.93 m), a beam of 12’8” (3.85 m) and a draft of 2’1” (.64 m). Empty weight is listed at 13,227 lbs.

(6,000 kg). With twin 250-hp Mercury outboards, four people, 102 gallons (386 L) of fuel and test gear on board, we had an estimated test weight of 14,737 lbs. (6,685 kg). www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

We can see the Aquila 32 being a popular vessel for day boaters. It has cleaner lines and better styling than fishing-focused offshore catamarans. The swim platform that extends past the motors is sure to be a hit and the cockpit has versatile seating and lots of it. The manufacturer lists passenger capacity at 16 and forward-facing seating at 10.

The depth of the sponsons gives the boat exceptional storage capacity and provides reasonable headroom in the cabin and head compared to V-bottoms of similar length.

Aquila offers the boat with three engine horsepower choices: 225, 250 and 300 in twin configurations, and Mercury’s Joystick Piloting System is an available option. The 250s on our test boat pushed the boat to 55

decent speeds and had the power to move the boat where we wanted in tight quarters.

Although her 12â&#x20AC;&#x2122;8â&#x20AC;? (3.85 m) beam seems quite wide, the Aquila 32 will still fit alongside another boat in a slip at most marinas.

Test Result Highlights

Top speed for the Aquila 32 (2019-) is 39.4 mph (63.4 kph), burning 52.5 gallons per hour (gph) or 198.71 liters per hour (lph).

Best cruise for the Aquila 32 (2019-) is 26.2 mph (42.2 kph), and the boat gets 1.0 miles per gallon (mpg) or 0.43 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 223 miles (358.88 kilometers).

Tested power is 2 x 250-hp Mercury Verado. MM

Located on the East end of Jost is, Foxy’s Taboo and the B-Line Bar located on Little Jost Van Dyke. Foxy’s Taboo is a great stop for lunch after a walk to, and a soak in, the bubbly pool. Or, if you prefer more nocturnal pursuits, live music by local artists and full moon parties are increasingly the norm here.

An Extra Day on Anegada...

he island of Anegada is a sailors must-see.

The beaches, bars and people here have a familiar comfort that is impossible to forget and more difficult to ignore. Once a visitor, always a friend, you will be back again.

It’s a conservative tradition of the “Sailor’s Wisdom” that sees us pay homage to the lyrical superstitions we recite to remind seafarers not to trifle with the unforeseen forces of wind and tide.

“Red Sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red Sky at morning, sailor take warning!” It’s a planned early departure from Virgin Gorda’s North Sound. We want to take advantage of the forecasted breeze that is expected to fill in, on our starboard beam. It is with eased sheets and out-stretched arms, that we head off into the unknown.

Stories abound of a legendary “drowned island” off to the North. Earning its’ name, “Tierra Anegada” the Spanish term for flooded land. The island barely crests the water’s surface, with an elevation of only 28 feet, she remains unseen. Many a visitor who ply the beautiful blue waters of the Sir Francis Drake Channel and the surrounding seas of the Isla de Virgines, never visit Anegada’s distant shores and it’s a mistake.

Bareboat charter companies previously restricted less experienced crew from making the long journey, thus, further adding to the island’s mystique.

After a comfortable morning’s beam reach on our Lagoon 450 sailing catamaran, we can just see her on the horizon. “Land Ho,” is the cry, Nature’s Little Secret is out! But, don’t let the other islands in the BVI hear, or they might get jealous and ask that the mystic and fun loving, joking jumbies pay you an unsuspecting visit in the night. Known to be pranksters, you never imagine what trouble they might bring? Best not to tempt fate!

Is my unconventional plan worth the risk, that we might miss something the other Virgin islands have to offer? As Captain, I’ve elected to part with the typical weeks’ sailing itinerary and dedicate two entire days on Anegada.

When I explained my float plan to some experienced, salty, sailor friends, who have visited the BVI and spent time sailing around the other islands and anchorages the beautiful territory has to offer, they seemed surprised, confused and perplexed by my bizarre decision. They believed the additional time spent on Anegada would leave us with a feeling of regret for having missed something.

An “Anegada Island Day” to do anything, I mean, nothing! Let me explain something few visitors to the BVI get and fewer truly understand, it IS, all about your attitude. It’s OK to have a “free play day.”

So, what will you miss with this planned extra day to do nothing? Nothing. What do we potentially gain?

Literally, Everything!

Ever felt like you needed a vacation from your vacation? Unless you actually dedicate the time to unwind and slow down properly, you simply will never understand the fundamental truth that it’s OK to do nothing on vacation, it’s actually quite something!

There is always something to be missed, but, there is everything to be gained by planning to do nothing.

An unstructured free day on Anegada is the key to a truly relaxing BVI vacation.

Slow down for a change. Breath, Listen, Imagine.

Take a walk alone for miles on any of Anegada’s white sand beaches. Comb the beach. Stare at the sea. People watch. Chat with a stranger and become friends for life.

However, should you feel compelled to keep a quicker pace and only grace Anegada’s shores for a short while then, I suggest you rent a scooter (it’s quite possibly as safe here, as anywhere). Accidents can happen, so please keep mind, the sand can be slippery when cornering. Stay on the left and you’ll always be right.

he Bitter End Yacht Club is excited to announce that after more than 20 months of demolition and cleanup from Hurricane Irma related damage, including the removal of over 100 structures and remediation of more than 64 acres, the process of rebuilding Bitter End is now underway.

Launched in 1969 as a remote island outpost that catered to visiting yachtsman, Bitter End will soon revisit its origins as a rollicking nautical village, while the owners plan to Bring Back Bitter End better than ever.

“We have a unique opportunity to return to our roots by welcoming back the sailing, yachting and watersports communities first,” said Richard Hokin, Managing Owner 82

Given Bitter End’s legacy, it is fitting that the marina village, the heart and soul of Bitter End, will be the first element of the property to be redeveloped following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irma. During the 2019-2020 season, Bitter End will debut all new world-class marina facilities to include a two-story, open-air marina complex featuring a lounge with expansive views of the North Sound and setting sun, enhanced

amenities such as marina-wide WiFi, upgraded bathing facilities and hospitality offerings that will make even the most sea-worn sailor feel right at home.

Venturing north from the marina along Bitter End’s new and greatly enhanced beach, watersports enthusiasts will find Bitter End’s legendary watersports center featuring an all new Club Fleet available to visiting boaters, Virgin Gorda villa guests, day visitors and locals. “Our tried & true fleets of Hobie Waves, Lasers, 420s, Sunfish, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards will be enhanced by new, cutting edge watersport toys that are sure to excite our community,” said Hokin. diving lessons, and a myriad of guided adventures led by Bitter End’s beloved watersports crew will continue to be part of Bitter End’s robust activities program.

Over the coming months, Bitter End will be offering a preview of what’s to come as they introduce exciting enhancements to the nautical village including yacht management programs, a casual beachfront restaurant and bar, private event space and an epicurean market offering everything you will need to provision for your adventure. Bitter End’s retail shop will feature their own collection of seaworthy goods, gear and apparel alongside products from select partners in the resort, fashion and watersports space. Following on the heels of the marina and waterfront rebuild, the resort redevelopment will include a variety of unique accommodations and hospitality amenities.

To honor their unique and laidback style, Bitter End has partnered with architecture and design firm Simplemente Madera, an organization that aligns with Bitter End’s focus on simple, elegant and organic designs that work in harmony with the natural environment. With this in mind, Bitter End’s remediation efforts have focused on upcycling as many materials as possible and mitigating the redevelopment’s impact on the natural environment; activities have included the recylcing of large volumes of concrete and timber debris, the restoration of nearly a mile of shoreline to its natural state, composting of organic waste and implementation of small-scale agriculture to support the on-site team.

While Bitter End has been

closed since September of 2017, the owners and their crew have been focused on supporting the local community through numerous philanthropic projects. The Bitter End Foundation launched in September 2017 as the Bitter End Irma Relief Fund, responding to the catastrophic impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. With an outpouring of generosity from the Bitter End community, the foundation has raised over $1 million dollars to support the unique needs and wellbeing of seaside communities. The Hokin family and the Bitter End team are keenly focused on continuing these efforts well beyond the reopening of the yacht club, reinforcing their commitment to the local community and the stewardship of our oceans.

Bitter End has also been focused on staying in touch with their friends from around the globe.

During the closure, they launched a lifestyle brand, Bitter End Provisions. First off I want to say THANKS! to all of the wonderful folks who have answered my questions and offered tips & advice. I really appreciate it.

Now here’s my latest question - We are sailing Out of the Blue on Sat 6/1 but only 8 will make the noon departure. 2 more are coming into Road Town on Sun 6/2 via the last Fast Ferry from STT. We need to figure out the best spot to pick them up that’s close to ferry dock for them & easy for us to get in & out of. What are your thoughts? And should we just use the dinghy & shuttle them from dock to boat? TIA for your help.

Larry G. Vaughn When I have folks who arrive a day or more late, I meet them at Trellis Bay. If they can fly into Beef Island Airport they can literally walk to Trellis Bay. If they arrive in Road Town, It's about a 30 minute cab ride from the ferry terminal to Trellis Bay. In the interim, you can sail to Cooper Island, or Marina Cay, and still be close to Trellis. I've done this many times and it always works well.

What is “OPERATION SAIL IT FORWARD BVI”?

The Catamaran Company formed this Facebook Group soon after Hurricane Irma in December 2017. It was formed for our Charter Guests to ensure they could support the local economy after a very destructive Category 5 hurricane named “IRMA” that took place in September 2017. Many of The Catamaran Company Charter Guests felt compelled to return immediately to the BVI post-IRMA to ensure they could continue to connect with local efforts and volunteer on the ground. By booking a charter and going sailing meant they could support the local economy, to do some good and have a sailing vacation at the same time.

Each charter vacation was documented on the Facebook Group with images, video, tips, and local advice while Guests were sailing on their vacation and posts were shared with others through the Facebook Group who were waiting to return to the BVI. Today, OPERATION SAIL IT FORWARD BVI is used as an informational platform to better charter vacations with tips on how to get to BVI’s, itinerary advice, anchorage info, new spots open, provisioning tips and more.

On day two of our time in the islands and we went to Oil Nut Bay for the first time. We went to the new dockside restaurant, pool and lounge area and it did not disappoint! The place was incredibly well done and the service was amazing. Jackie rocks - incredible story of her survival during Irma and we were so moved we had to jump up and give her a hug. Everything was beautiful and we will definitely be back!

A mid-afternoon, Sunday flight into St. Thomas provided the perfect opportunity to experience Ocean Dreams water taxi service from Red Hook to West End Tortola. Shelby and Captain Brian Christopher took care of everything from the baggage carousel at St. Thomas airport until we were along side the VOYAGE dock at Soper’s Hole Marina. We even got a view of carnival in down town Charlotte Amalie on our drive through to Red Hook with cab driver Lew. The Ocean Dreams service was first class and is a great way to kick off your VOYAGE charters vacation.

Renovations at Soper’s Hole Marina continue with work currently focused on the new bulkhead and walkway. VOYAGE charters main dock in front of reception is operational providing slip space, fuel and water. Electrical pedestals are awaiting installation and the flags are flying!

VOYAGE 480 “Electrified” has been very busy since her arrival earlier this year, but a gap in the schedule gave us an opportunity to spend a few days aboard this unique vessel. She is currently the only vessel electric yacht in the VOYAGE fleet but hull #001 of the new VOYAGE 590 range will be similarly equipped and available for charter in 2020.

Base manager Rane Downing ran through operation of the Oceanvolt SEA systems and then we were ready to depart. A few empty moorings buoys in West End harbor were used to get familiar with the feel of the electric drives; the initial lack of noise does take some adjustment but maneuverability in brisk 20 knots winds showed the motors had plenty of power for this size of vessel.

With white caps dotting Drake’s Channel and a full afternoon of daylight to burn, Cooper Island was chosen as the initial destination. Under full main and slightly reduced genoa, Electrified sailed to windward at pace and in comfort, all the time topping up the 32KW battery bank via solar and propeller regeneration. Rane has coined the term “watts sailing” and it does not take long to understand the addiction of watching the charging watts rise as you trim the sails and increase boat speed. The sailing performance of the VOYAGE 480 is a perfect match for the requirements of regeneration and the typical winds and sun of the BVIs does the rest!

As our port tack course was taking us directly toward Great Harbour, Peter Island we decided to head in and see the new Willy T’s location. Willy T III is certainly the biggest to date and is as popular as ever. It’s great to have something for yachts to visit between Norman Island and Cooper Island, so it would be a pity if the vessel has to move on from here, as has been suggested.

In the meantime, keep it on your itinerary and plan a stop.

Omar’s Fusion Restaurant is a stone’s throw from the VOYAGE reception building with delicious food and a view of the sunset. Dinner there was followed by breakfast at D’ Best Cup next morning and the prompt arrival of our preordered provisions by Rite Way. Manchioneel Bay, Cooper Island

Passing Dead Chest and Salt Island we could see lots of yachts already moored at Manchioneel Bay. The new Cooper Island Beach Club seems to be on everyone’s list of places to visit and they’ve a done an excellent job of rebuilding the facility. Be warned, if you want to get a mooring you will need to arrive early or pre-book one of the BoatyBall.com moorings. The resort discourages anchoring in the bay as it damages the sea grass beds. Counter currents and swirling winds add to the complication, so plan ahead.

A final starboard tack from Cooper island took us comfortably over to Scrub Island and by late afternoon Electrified was sitting on a mooring behind Marina Cay. The restaurant and bar at Marina Cay are utilizing a marquee tent for the time being and, along with Pusser’s usual fare; we hear good things about local musicians playing on the deck. This little island and its protecting reef is still one of the BVI’s landmark locations and it’s good to see visitors enjoying the atmosphere. If you are looking for a little more sophistication, then Scrub Island Resort is only a short dinghy ride away, or you could 98

choose to stay on their dock. The aft deck area of Electrified, with its built in propane grill, was used to prepare and enjoy that evening’s dinner. After sunset the blue underwater lights brought tarpon out to feed under the stern.

Day 2

An air-conditioned night of comfort was achieved in near silence; Electrified’s automatic generator only ran for one hour to top off the battery bank. During breakfast we ran the water maker, again without need of the generator, and by the time we were ready to leave the tanks were full.

Fresh winds were forecast for the day and our over night destination was to be the North Sound of Virgin Gorda. A long starboard tack toward Ginger Island saw the wind shifting further east and a second tack to port put Electrified on a course between Virgin Gorda and the Dog Islands. Whilst most yachts were making a beeline for a stop at The Baths, we made the most of calmer inshore waters and great winds. Solar and regeneration worked their silent magic and we were soon past Mountain Point and looking to make a final tack into the Colquhoun Reef/Prickly Pear entrance of the North Sound. Once through the channel markers we sailed into the lee of Prickly Pear and dropped sail. With only battery power, we could motor peacefully around the anchorages starting at Biras Creek. The dock and mooring field there were in use and several yachts had stopped over.

There does not appear to be anything open onshore as far as the resort is concerned.

The Saba Rock Resort was undergoing a high level of construction activity. Cranes, barges and labor were on site and much progress was evident. Navigating

on past Saba Rock to Deep Bay is made relatively easy now that channel markers are maintained but it does get shallow so proceed with caution.

The Oil Nut Bay Resort has opened a beautiful marina beach club facility at the entrance to Deep Bay. Overnight dockage is available, and this gives access to the restaurant, shop and swimming pool. The view out over the fringing reef and Necker Island is worth the visit alone.

Re-tracing our course, we headed Electrified back into the North Sound and past the sandy beach of Vixen Point on Prickly Pear Island.

This has always been a great spot to anchor for some beach time and it was good to see several vessels doing just that. Nothing is open on shore there at present so take a beverage with you.

Earlier in the day, we used the BoatyBall app to reserve a mooring at Leverick Bay, so we made our way across to get our spot for the evening. Leverick Bay is fully open for business and doing a roaring trade. The restaurant, beach bar, docks, shops, swimming pool and supermarket are ready and waiting!

Michael Beans was doing the last show of his regular winter season and the crowd participation was evident. I don’t know how many times he has done his routine but he genuinely seems to enjoy it all and takes the time to chat with folks before and after the shows.

He seems to know a little bit about everywhere, much like Foxy at JVD. Drinks and appetizers ashore were followed by dinner on the boat and plans of our sail to Anegada in the morning.

A steady stream of yachts started to depart Leverick Bay from early morning, and most were heading in the direction of Anegada. It was clear that not all our neighboring yachts were equipped with water makers as there was something of a line up to take on water at the dock.

No such concerns on Electrified as our water maker and icemaker had done their work. The diesel tank gauge had barely moved from full, as the generator’s running time had been minimal. A note on water making: if you are going to Anegada, make water before you arrive and after you leave. The anchorage at Setting Point is very shallow and the soft sand bottom makes the water dense with sand particles. This will quickly clog the water maker pre-filters, so avoid making water there.

We were ready to go sometime after 9 am, at which point there was a procession of yachts ahead of us. Passing Richard Branson’s Necker Island, with its windmills sweeping around in the steady

trade winds, it felt good to be on our own little self-sufficient Electrified Island!

Anegada is very low-lying and not visible until you are about halfway across. With winds in the 18 to 20 knots range, Electrified sat on 9 to 10 knots boatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speed and she reeled in boat after boat. All VOYAGE 480s are exceptionally good sailing vessels and customarily out-perform many larger yachts.

This particular point of sail and accompanying boat speed generated prodigious amounts of regeneration with each motor showing over 1kw of electricity going back to the battery banks.

The buildings, trees and the masts of yachts still in harbor at Setting Point were quite visible now. Yachts ahead of us could be seen dropping sails and motoring in through the channel markers and before long we were doing to same.

Be sure to follow the channel in and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be tempted to turn into the anchorage until you have passed the last green marker to port. Although it was only late morning, all the moorings at the front of the harbor were occupied so we motored down wind and found an anchoring spot well clear of other 100

vessels. Holding in the soft sand bottom is typically good and the shallow depth means a short scope of chain along with the heavy Delta anchor is sufficient. Be warned this anchorage is shallow. We anchored Electrified comfortably in about 5 feet of water but a larger Lagoon cat that came in after (yes, we caught and passed it on the sail over!) ran aground behind us. They got going again with no damage done, fortunately.

A friendly guy from the Lobster Trap Restaurant dinghied out to us and dropped off a menu; he also mentioned we could get a cab or rent scooters from there. We sat a while to take in the view and make sure the boat was settled then headed over to their dock. The bar and restaurant have a very nice feel so we made a dinner reservation and stayed for lunch. L & M Scooter Rentals is right next door and Michael fixed us up right away. He gave as a thorough run down of everything we needed to know, especially the sections of road best avoided on these small-wheeled bikes. We had the whole afternoon to explore and started with the flamingo viewing spot just a short ride down the road. Michael told us most of the birds would be out feeding during the day but a few would be on the salt ponds. Sure, enough we could see a dozen or more bright pink birds from the observation platform by the road.

Our next stop was Loblolly Bay on the north shore.

Anegada’s north shore

Flash of Beauty Restaurant is the place to go here and they were doing a good trade. There is a great section of shallow reef to snorkel from the beach, but the fresh winds were making a little too much wave action to entice many in. We took a swim and sat on the beach, the outer reef on the north shore creates a line of breaking waves as far as you can see. Sea grape trees fringe the back of the beach and some are quite large and old. We stood under one that was teeming with birds and insects feeding on the small flowers. Although at first glance this dry coral island looks a harsh arid place for wild life, it’s surprising what flourishes here.

Another favorite beach spot for us is Cow Wreck Beach. Our ride there took us back past Anegada airport and the small community known as the Settlement. Most of the islands 250 residents live here and a large hanger on the outskirts of town houses the oversized generators that provide power to the island. Back in the days of the Apollo Space Program there was a tracking station on Anegada. This

prompted the construction of some basic infrastructure on the island such as the airfield, sections of paved road and buildings.

Riding back past Settling Point and Pomato Point around to Cow Wreck Beach, the road is mainly paved then becomes hard packed sand. There is a lively beach bar and restaurant here and a gift shop, also a row of 4 cottages that look like vacation rentals. Lots of visi-

tors were enjoying the late afternoon before heading back to their boats or cottages. This really is a stunning stretch of white sand beach and we took time to walk along by the surf. We saw a dark shape gliding in the shallow water and recognized it was spotted eagle ray looking for a meal buried in the soft sand. This was a good size adult ray, and later in the day we saw 2 small juvenile rays swimming on the surface near the Lobster Trap dock.

We handed the scooters back to our friends at L & M just after 5 pm then spent a couple of hours on the boat before our 7:30 dinner reservation. Anegada is a great place for watching the sunset but we had just a little too much cloud cover for the possibility of a “green flash” this time. Our lobster dinner on the deck at the Lobster Trap was delightful. Nicely laid tables, good service and perfectly grilled spiny lobster. I have not enjoyed lobster this well cooked since the days when Lowell Wheatley ran the Anegada Beach Club with his partner Sue. It’s great to see

how popular Anegada has become these days and it’s very much due to the long years of work put in by the likes of the Soares family at Neptunes Treasure and Lowell at Anegada Beach Club.

Day 4

Thursday’s sail took us down past the north side of Tortola with the prospect of an overnight stop in the vicinity of Jost Van Dyke. A direct course from Setting Point to JVD usually puts the wind so far aft that you are close to a run.

This is not my favorite point of sail so we headed a little higher, making for Guana Island. This also took us near a popular snorkel spot at Monkey Point. I wanted to see how Electrified sailed under genoa alone and we made an easy 6 knots, just the speed where you see worthwhile output from the regeneration.

The solar panels mounted on the hard top bimini were also clear of shade from the mainsail, so our green power was working well! If you have fishermen in your group, the waters between Anegada and Tortola can produce some good 102

catches and a slower boat speed is good for trolling.

It looked like many of the yachts from our previous night were Jost Van Dyke bound and by the time we approached Sandy Cay it was clear it would be another busy night at Foxy’s. Great Harbour and White Bay were packed with yachts and people enjoying the laid back atmosphere that Jost Van Dyke has become known for.

White Bay is another gem of the BVIs and the proliferation of beach bars and villas in this area speak to its popularity. It is always worth a visit, but you better get there early!

Back in Great Harbour, Foxy is going strong; we last saw him at the Annapolis Boat Show in October 2018 where he performed at the invitation of the BVI Tourist Board.

He still does his old favorites plus some Irma and Maria inspired additions.

We opted to spend the night in Little Harbor where Abe’s and Sidney’s Peace & Love bars are open for business. You can get cab rides from there to anywhere else on the island. Our view across to Tortola was of Apple, Carrot and Long Bays. The first rain showers of the week rolled down over Sage Mountain and gave us a sprinkle or two. The islands are dry at the moment, particularly the south facing hills, so rain was welcome. We had another peaceful night on board and watched more tarpon in the blue lights.

than sail, then our regular diesel engine charter yachts are going to get you there quicker. My thoughts were summed up by the guests who took out Electrified the week after we got back. unchaser Scuba is a small dive shop located in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda at the Bitter End Yacht Club. At the moment BEYC is still closed for renovations, but is looking to have the marina up and running in winter 2019.

Sunchaser Scuba is currently the only thing operational on the property. While they await the rebuild of their shop, they are successfully working out of two modified containers.

Due to minimal foot traffic, there are currently no set store hours. They recommend calling ahead for air fills and other purchases to arrange a time that works for all.

Besides air fills and a small retail store, Sunchaser Scuba offers daily dive trips, PADI courses, and private charters anywhere in the BVI. They offer convenient rendezvous diving and can meet you at Leverick Bay, Dog Islands or Cooper Island.

As far as other locations in North Sound: Leverick Bay Marina is fully operational; the mooring field at Biras Creek is operational and checked, but the rest of the resort remains closed; Saba Rock is rebuilding and aiming to open spring 2020; Oil Nut Bay just opened up their new marina in the harbor of Deep Bay with the new Nova restaurant, a library, pool and deli/store. They also offer pick up with their ferry at Gun Creek and Leverick Bay. From Leverick Bay you can catch an easy taxi ride up to Hog Heaven, on top of Virgin Gorda, for some great food and amazing views all the way to Anegada.

Or venture to the new Sugarcane restaurant in Nail Bay, which just reopened and offers great food, a pool and sportsclub.

The CYS is run by a board of eight full members, elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting.

ape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek organizers are looking to expand overseas and grow international participation in the award-winning regatta over the next five years.

With international promotions, a series of road trips to key markets and Phuket’s growing appeal as a world-class sailing destination, organizers are confident in growing the regatta’s international footprint and attracting more charterers for the 2019 event and beyond.

“We have seen a steady increase in the number of charterers compet114

ing in the regatta in recent years and this is an area we want to grow further. Australia is an exciting market with a high population of sailors and a strong awareness of Phuket already. This is a market we are investing in for the future growth of the regatta,” said Byron Jones, Managing Director of organizers Media Business Services Co. Ltd. “We went to Australia and visited a number of Australian yacht clubs last year. While promoting Phuket Raceweek we were also promoting sailing in Phuket, and the response we had was overwhelming. We

Ultimes Threaten Rolex Fastnet Race Record

nless there is a flat calm, it is very likely that the outright record will fall in this edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s premium event, the Rolex Fastnet Race, starting Saturday, August 3, 2019. For leading the charge in the world’s biggest offshore yacht race, with a fleet of 300350 competing, will be the world’s fastest offshore boats – the Ultimes.

In the last windy Rolex Fastnet Race in 2011, the Loick Peyronskippered Banque Populaire V blasted around the 608-mile course in 1 day, 8 hours and 48 minutes.

Since then Gabart has graduated up to the Ultime trimaran class and in 2017 he set a new time for the singlehanded round the world record of just 42 days 16 hours and 40 minutes – just under two days slower than the record for the fully crewed lap. During this Gabart averaged 27.2 knots, so one can imagine how MACIF, being sailed fully crewed, having since been improved, and racing against other Ultimes, should be able to destroy the present 18.53

knot record. MACIF would ‘only’ have to average 25.3+ knots to complete the Rolex Fastnet Race in under a day.

“With the speeds we can now reach and if conditions are good for flying, then we can break the record for sure, but it fully depends on the weather,” says Gabart. He adds that MACIF, all 30 x 21m of her, can fly in around 13 knots of wind but optimum conditions are 15-18 knots – more than this and the sea state becomes too lumpy. In her sweet spot MACIF has already touched 49.4 knots (in the Route du Rhum, singlehanded under autopi-

But for the mighty 131ft-(40m-) long trimaran (later re-christened Spindrift 2) her average speed, a mere 18.53 knots, was like she was towing buckets. Two years earlier she had managed the 2880-mile west to east Atlantic crossing, averaging 32.94 knots.

Today, while her transatlantic record may remain tough to beat, Banque Populaire V is old technology. Modern day Ultime trimarans at 100 feet long may be shorter but, mostly thanks to their new foiling technology, are substantially faster. And this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race will feature at least three of them.

Francois Gabart is one of contemporary sailing’s most remarkable competitors. Pleasantly unassuming and relatively small framed, the blonde haired French 36-year-old graduated up through the usual French classes culminating in his getting backing from his insurance company sponsor MACIF for a Vendée Globe campaign. In 201213 he won the Vendée Globe on his first attempt, and subsequently the IMOCA class in the Rolex Fastnet Race sailing doublehanded with

lot) although he admits this is not the goal. “Our target is to average more than 40 knots.” A 40-knot Rolex Fastnet Race would take just over 15 hours!

However, the MACIF team mainly wants to race other Ultimes. The line-up at present includes the newly announced Franck Cammas/ Charles Caudrelier co-skipper setup on board the rebuilt Edmond de Rothschild, following its bow breakage in last autumn’s Route du Rhum.

Of significant interest will also be the Rolex Fastnet Race being the first competitive outing for the latest Ultime, Thomas Coville’s Sodebo Ultim 3. Coville is remarkable for having competing in almost every major sailing event from the America’s Cup and Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race (winning with Groupama 4) to the Mini, IMOCA 60, ORMA 60 and for more than a decade in giant multihulls, on which in 2016 he set a new solo round the world record (later broken by Gabart).

Coville also competed in the Fastnet with the French Corum team that won the 1991 Admiral’s Cup. He has fond memories of the race.

“The Rolex Fastnet Race will be our first race to test our new boat,” says Coville. “It is a great opportunity for us to compete against the other Ultimes and to be part of a big race in England. The Rolex Fastnet Race is very prestigious and usually has a lot of different conditions, so it is a perfect test.”

He also appreciates how the Royal Ocean Racing Club has opened their premier race out so that professional teams can compete (briefly) alongside family cruisers. “It is a mix of different ways of sailing and different levels, but it is all still the same passion for offshore sailing. I really like this way of thinking and the atmosphere.”

Inevitably the giant Ultimes are fiendishly complex craft, especially now they can fly. Even come August it will be early days for the Sodebo team, who have only been testing their new boat, which has novel features such as a cabin forward of the mast, for the last month. “We have been discovering the boat technically – furling and unfurling, tacking and gybing and using the boards, up and down and the daggerboard and playing with the rake of the

rudders. It is working pretty well,” says Coville. “We’ve just had two offshore sessions for two or three days each in 30 knots and the boat seems very safe and quite fast. But it is a long way from being stable and achieving really big speeds.”

For Coville competition between the other Ultimes in the Rolex Fastnet Race is paramount: “The course isn’t direct and the record really depends on the weather. We are more interested in racing together and being part of the event.”

As to the performance of the new Sodebo Ultim 3 he says: “Before on the old Ultimes, the target was 30 knots. Now our targets are 35+ knot average speeds. It is a huge step up, but you need to stabilize the flight or to be skimming to raise the average speed and that is sea state dependent. It is amazing how easy it is to go fast in a good sea state.”

For the Ultimes the 2019 Rolex Fastnet Race could be a case of set off and be home in time for tea.

he Worrell 1000 Reunion Race (W1KRR) is an offshore long distance beach catamaran sailboat race held in the waters between Florida and Virginia Beach, VA. The race covers approximately 1000 miles with overnight stops at multiple locations along the East Coast of the United States.

The 2019 Worrell 1000 Reunion Race brings back the beach cat contest, which held 20 editions from 1976 to 2002. Beginning May 6 from South Florida, three teams took on the 1000-mile offshore adventure to Virginia Beach, VA. Here is the report from May 14 – Leg 8: Surfside Beach, SC to Wrightsville Beach, NC (approximately a 90 mile leg) It was a beautiful, calm, and cold morning. At least, it felt cold compared to the previous mornings on more Southerly shores.

Winds were steady at 12 knots, from the NORTH – it would be an upwind leg for the majority of the 88-mile leg to Wrightsville Beach past Cape Fear.

The forecast called for relatively calm seas, steady breezes, and sunshine all day. The only possible snag?

Frying Pan Shoals – a navigable line close to the shore was possible and the teams were all planning to try.

At 7:30 am, Team Texas (TCDYC) was already on the beach – they had enjoyed two, full legs without any boat damage, and had narrowed the gap between finishes from team Cat in the Hat the last few legs.

They were hungry.

The beach had filled out by 8am with the rest of the teams and Race Committee. By the start of the Skipper’s meeting at 9 am – all the teams were suited up in their gear and ready to go, even though the start sequence would not begin for another 55 minutes.

Throughout all the rough legs, late-night-into-earlymorning boat repairs and logistical issues – the entire fleet felt a unified excitement – they all were starting to believe they would make it to the finish together.

At the sound of the horn at exactly 10 am ET, all three boats pushed through the surf. Team Australia, in the pole position, came out with ease while Cat in the Hat, in the second position, rolled over them like a bullet shot from a gun as their ground crew, Aaron made a remarkable effort to get them out ahead.

Team Texas got out quickly and they soon passed Cat in the Hat – for some reason, that team had turned offshore, slowed, and seemed to stall for a short while.

Team Australia and TCDYC were double-trapped, hulls flying within five minutes of launch – Team Cat in the Hat sorted themselves out and were not far behind.

By the time the fleet had reached the halfway point, they fell into a familiar pattern; Team Australia was out ahead, while team Cat in the Hat trailed just behind, followed by team TCDYC. They moved at a good pace ranging from 7 to 16 knots, according to the online trackers.

By the time the lead boat had reached the small Jetty at Masonboro Inlet, the gap between Team Australia had widened significantly. They tacked in close to shore, selected a beach run to the finish and crossed easily at an elapsed time of 6h 21m 12s. It would be an hour and 20 minutes before we saw more boats.

Cat in the Hat was the second to appear after passing the jetty. Unlike Australia, they chose to remain on the far-offshore tack and sailed well past the finish line. They were forced to zigzag tack their way to the finish, riding a crested wave over the line with a recorded leg of 7h 43m 23s.

to the finish – however – they followed that line past finish-line-mid-point, tacked to make the starboard mark of the finish…missed with their rudders up, caught the wind, and bolted along the beach to the port flag – narrowly missing the race committee official.

Their ground crew was finally able to pull them back over the start line at a final leg time of 7h 56m 23s – just 13 minutes after the last boat to finish. It made for exciting videos for the local news crews that were covering the finish.

As the sun sets on this gorgeous, North Carolina day, everyone is enjoying libations and awesome conversation at the tiki bar behind our host hotel, The Blockade Runner. The feeling of camaraderie and plain, old-fashioned joy at getting this far in the Worrell is evident. We’re GOING to make it to Virginia Beach – TOGETHER – and we will have lots of amazing tales to tell for years to come. housands of spectators waved their favorite teams’ colors from the packed Marina Yacht Club Peninsula Race Village as they witnessed the Australia SailGP Team repeat as champions with victory over Japan, to win the U.S. debut of SailGP. After two full days of thrilling racing at San Francisco SailGP, the Australia SailGP Team, helmed by

Proving the ultimate come-back kids after struggling in training and a disappointing day of racing on Saturday, they defeated the Japanese team in the final match race to win the event and go two points up in the overall season rankings and a step closer to the $1 million prize.

After dominating the opening day, winning all three races in an impressive showing, Outteridge’s team couldn’t hold off Slingsby’s charge. Despite a close battle in the final match race, Outteridge later noted that a software issue meant that they were ‘sailing blind’ around the racecourse.

“As soon as something doesn’t work, it makes it very hard, it’s like asking a race car driver to drive a car where the brakes aren’t working,” said Outteridge. “The last race we lost the display software that tells us the time to the start, time to boundaries, shows a diagram of where you are on the course, so we raced the last race blind. Considering all that happened today, to still come second here and still pushing hard is great.

Yesterday was the highlight for our team so far.”

With two wins out of two, the Australian team takes top spot on the overall Season 1 leaderboard, with just two points separating the top two teams going into the next event in New York, June 21-22.

Taking its first SailGP race win, Great Britain was one of the standout performers of the weekend, finishing third overall and maintaining the same position on the overall leaderboard.

One team that will be glad of a second chance to take a win on home soil is the young U.S. team.

Having improved significantly going into the weekend, finishing just off the podium in fourth place, they are hungry to improve.

“We are going to go back again and go through the data, look at everything we learned and keep building on that,” said U.S. helm Rome Kirby. “We want to keep the learning curve going and keep progressing. It’s time to hit the books ahead of New York.”

ince SailGP’s kick-off in Sydney, the young American team has been billed as the rookie group, but after their performance in San Francisco, it’s clear the United States SailGP Team is not to be underestimated. The close-knit “band of brothers” is coming into its own as the season progresses. The data shows it too; the American team spent more time foiling than any other boat in the fleet, and was hot off the start line consistently. On its home waters again in New York City, this team is one to watch.

Wing trimmer Riley Gibbs grew up in Long Beach, California. He was only two weeks old the first time he went sailing, and since then his passion for the sport has remained a constant throughout his life.

At age five, Riley was busy every weekend sailing his Sabot in his local waters. Since then, he’s graduated to bigger, higher performance boats, he’s the youngest helmsmen to ever win a national championship in the 505 class, a 29er Youth Worlds silver medalist, and placed 4th at the Formula Kite World Championships. He’s got quick wit and a lighthearted attitude that lifts his teammates’ spirits. When he’s not racing with his team in SailGP, he’s campaigning a Nacra17 for the United States Olympic Sailing Team, with a mission for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He’s a pizza enthusiast, who likes to take a slice on the go. When Riley isn’t on the water in one of the various classes he sails, he’s spending time with his cat, Miss Timid, who he describes as a “true fat cat.”

Hans Henken Grinder

Grinder Hans Henken has perspective; not only is his sailing resume extensive, but he’s also a literal 128

rocket scientist. After eight years of hitting the books, Henken graduated from Stanford with a masters in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, which comes in handy when racing the highly technical F50 catamaran. If Hans were trapped on a desert island with anyone, he would pick Dan Morris, based on the theory that between the two of them, they could engineer their own civilization. Hans has a bronze medal from the 2008 Youth World Championships and earned a gold medal in the Moth at the 2009 Youth World Championship.

Sailing is an integral part of Henken family life; both Hans and his younger sister Paris are campaigning for the 2020 Olympics. Hans and longtime partner Judge Ryan hope to represent the United States in the 49er class in Tokyo.

Mac Agnese Grinder

Hailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, grinder Mac Agnese is the youngest member onboard the American F50. Agnese earned his first world championship medal at age 11 in the Melges 24, and it wouldn’t be his last. In 2017, Agnese won another world championship in the Snipe fleet. He also boasts a world championship silver medal in the 29er class, and bronze in the Sirena SL16. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also competed on the World Match Racing Tour and Extreme Sailing Series. When he’s not racing the F50, he can be found on the tennis court or cheering for the Dolphins or Miami Heat. Did we mention Mac is a huge Eminem fan?

Dan Morris Grinder

Dan Morris grew up sailing on his family’s cruiser in his hometown of Edina, Minnesota. Known as a true team player, Morris fell in love with racing during the World Match Race Tour, winning in both 2013 and 2016. = Morris has also campaigned for the Olympics in the 49er, competed in the Extreme Sailing Series, and sailed in the International 14 and Farr40 classes. When his schedule eventually slows down, Morris hopes to adopt a pet Mastiff, who he will name “Kitty”.

Morris has a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan, and gets on the water whenever he can - even if it’s frozen. When Morris was six years old, he told his dad he was going to be a professional ice hockey player…thankfully that didn’t last long.

Taylor Canfield knows how to multi-task. Not only is he the flight controller onboard the United States SailGP Team’s F50, but he’s also a challenger for the 36th America’s Cup, heading up Stars & Stripes Team USA. Canfield grew up in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and has been on the water since he was a kid. Canfield is a force to be reckoned with, but his fiancée, 49er class Olympic sailor Stephanie Roble can give him a run for his money. Canfield is a World Match Racing Champion, four-time Congressional Cup winner, and has been ranked as the number one match racer in the world for three of the past five years, winning a grand total of 14 World Match Race Tour events. ACDC is his jam, and despite his high-energy demeanor, he enjoys the occasional round of golf. Canfield’s claim to fame? He has an impressive collection of hats.
