Registrations Open for 2020 Mediterranean Escapade Registrations are opened for the 2020 Mediterranean Escapade, which is set to become one of the most popular international rallies. Run by Mariner Boating and Multihull Solutions, the event runs from May 21 to June 6, 2020, and is expected to draw a strong contingent of participants who can either join in on their own boat, charter a Fountaine Pajot catamaran, or just book a berth or cabin for the rally. The 2020 Mediterranean Escapade takes participants from Kusadasi to Marmaris, sailing the spectacular Greek Islands of the Aegean Sea and the Carian coast of Turkey. The rally will be held over the two best weeks of the Mediterranean summer taking in some

unforgettable destinations, including Kusadasi and its ancient city of Ephesus, the rugged beauty and excellent restaurants of Samos, and Arki with its population of 40 people and 200 goats, which produces the best feta in Greece. Participants will also experience the fantastic views of the Turkish coast from Pserimos, the 11th century monastery in Patmos that is the spiritual headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Church, the bustling carpet markets of Datca and much more. Neoprene is a type of synthetic rubber also known as polychloropene. Unlike plastics, neoprene doesn’t have a specific recycling stream, so when you dump a used wetsuit, especially an older one, the fabric can’t be re-used like plastic bags. This would mean wasteprocessing companies would burn the materials and the remaining material would be stored at a dumping ground. Tuna Bruschetta

his is one of my favorite keto/low-carb dinners that’s also gluten-free and dairy free. But the thing is that everyone loves it. While I call this TUNA bruschetta, you can make it with any firm white fish. And if the weather isn’t so nice for grilling, the fish fillets can be sautéed. If you are seriously restricting your carbs, as I am with diabetes, the trick is to practice careful portion control with the bruschetta topping. Don’t go overboard with the garlic, green onions or tomatoes, all of which can cause blood glucose spikes if eaten in too large of quantities. Also do not use balsamic vinegar in place of the wine vinegar; it has far too much sugar in it. Allulose is currently my favorite sugar substitute as it is made from sugar but is not metabolized. The flavor is good, never bitter or overly sweet. One nice feature is that it browns in cooking and grilling, just like real sugar; it also dissolves easily. In large quantities it can cause diarrhea, but I only use it in small quantities and don’t have a problem. I have not yet found Allulose in a grocery store; I buy it from Amazon. Allulose isn’t cheap, but I don’t use that much of it that it’s a real budget-buster. A teaspoon in a salad dressing, perhaps a tablespoon in a BBQ rub. 26

Instructions Mix 1 tablespoon olive oil, vinegar, garlic, Allulose, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, tomato and green onion together. Refrigerate while grilling tuna. Preheat grill to hot. Brush tuna steaks (1 per person) with remaining olive oil. Grill tuna for about 5 minutes per side — cook according to your preference, rare to medium. Remove tuna from grill and place on plates. Top with bruschetta. Add feta if desired.

hili has always been a cool-weather staple. Then I became diabetic a little over a year ago and learned that beans were totally off limits as were any quantity of tomatoes over one slice (or two cherry tomatoes). I follow a very low carb way of eating (generally 12 to 15 grams of carbs — total, not net — per day). The good news is that my blood sugar is in excellent control — you can read more about how this allows me to lead the life I wish in Cruising with Diabetes. So my old chili recipe was totally off limits. Last winter, as I was learning about my new way of eating, I didn’t try to come up with a low-carb chili. But as the weather got chilly this fall, I decided to try. And I came up with a recipe that isn’t just make-do, it’s great. Dave and non-diabetic friends who came over for dinner have loved it. Side note: Dave is allergic to all milk products and loved it even without the sour cream and cheese on top. And since you’re not using a commercial taco seasoning, it’s gluten-free as well. Low-Carb/Keto Chili

Prep Time: 5 mins Cook Time: 25 mins Total Time: 30 mins Cool weather comfort food without all the carbs contained in beans, tomatoes and many taco seasonings. Delicious and not just a make-do! Course: Main Dish Cuisine: Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Keto/LCHF, Make-Ahead, Mexican/Southwestern Servings: 2 Calories: 751 kcal Ingredients 4 strips bacon 3/4 pound ground beef 2 green onions 1 small zucchini 1/4 cup green or red pepper, diced 1-1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1-1/2 teaspoon cumin dash cayenne pepper dash jalapeno powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup sour cream 1/4 cup cheddar cheese 2 cherry tomatoes Instructions Cut bacon into 1” pieces and fry until crisp. Remove from pan, leaving grease. While bacon is cooking, slice green onions. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the sliced green parts for garnish. Add ground beef and un-reserved green onion to bacon grease and chop with the side of a spoon. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until almost cooked through. While ground beef is cooking, chop green or red peppers. Reserve 1 tablespoon for garnish. Add remaining peppers, spices and cooked bacon to ground beef. Turn heat to low and cook 20 minutes to let flavors blend and develop. Stir occasionally. Shred cheese while chili is cooking. Slice or dice cherry tomatoes. To serve, place chili into bowls and top with shredded cheese, sour cream, reserved peppers, and green onions. 27

Notes, Substitutions and Variations Ingredient notes, particularly for diabetics: Bacon: Most bacon is sugar-cured. Use uncured or salt-cured bacon if possible; otherwise look for bacon with less than 1g of sugar per serving. Sour Cream: Use full-fat sour cream as it has less tendency to spike blood sugar. However, if you cannot tolerate dairy, omit it. Cheddar cheese: You can use any type of cheese that you prefer, as long as it does not spike your blood sugar. Shred your own with a grater; commercially shredded cheese is coated with a starch to keep it from sticking together and that starch will raise the carb count and impact your blood sugar. Again, omit if you cannot tolerate dairy. Sweet peppers: Do not use yellow peppers as they have considerably more sugars than green or red peppers. Spices: vary quantities to taste. If you do not have jalapeno powder, use additional cayenne (buy jalapeno powder on Amazon if your local store does not carry it). Use less or omit the cayenne and jalapeno for a milder chili. Zucchini: omit for an even lower carb version -just 4g per serving. Tomato: If you do not have cherry tomatoes, use 2 tablespoons diced tomato. Limit your portion carefully as tomatoes contain a lot of sugar. Omit tomato and cut out 1g carb per serving. Ground beef: vary amount to suit your needs. Accompaniments: This is great with my Keto Bread and the Keto/Low-Carb version of my Greek Salad IF it works with your carb limits per meal.

his has always been a favorite salad of mine and I shared it in The Boat Galley Cookbook. Since being diagnosed as diabetic, I have tweaked it some to make it very low carb and totally sugar-free, suitable for a keto diet as well as LCHF. It’s also gluten-free and dairy-free. 28

As with everything in the low-carb world, portion control and ingredient choice is critical. Yes, there really is such as thing as too many veggies, so I have to restrain myself from eating an unlimited amount. Two ingredients of note: Allulose sweetener (see previous description): If you aren’t eating keto or LCHF, you can use brown or white sugar in place of the Allulose (note that calories will then be higher). Duke’s mayonnaise: This is the only mayonnaise that does not contain sugar or any sugar substitute It’s sold in most grocery stores, but if you can’t find it in yours, it’s on Amazon. And one more ingredient to beware of: the bacon. Most bacon is sugar-cured and trace amounts can remain. I try to find uncured bacon and am able to about 75% of the time. If I can’t, I look for a brand with less than 1 gram of sugar per serving. Some people do spike with bacon in any form; if you do, simply omit it. It’s still a great salad.

If you want a larger portion, use up to 1 cup additional broccoli (for 1 more carb gram per serving) but do not add additional cauliflower – it has far more carbs than broccoli. ur first company! Dave and I were so excited to welcome our friends Tony and Vicky aboard for a week in Mexico. Years before, we’d hatched the idea for our first charter when spending a weekend aboard their boat on Kentucky Lake. One thing had led to another and now we were cruising full time and they were contemplating doing the same. We wanted to show them just how magical this life could be from the moment they stepped on board. After anchoring, we had a “welcome aboard” glass of wine while dinner was in the oven. I’d had done the prep work the day before – Baked Tuscan Chicken is a wonderful make-ahead meal for guests, needing virtually no last-minute attention. Just as we finished eating, the sun set and turned the sky a fiery mix of crimson and orange. We continued to sit on deck as darkness fell and the stars came out. Later, as we all headed to bed, Vicky turned to me and said, “This is wonderful.” I couldn’t have said it better.

Baked Tuscan Chicken

Prep Time: 35 mins Bake: 40 mins Total Time: 1 hr 15 mins Delicious chicken dinner perfect for entertaining as you can do most of the prep ahead of time and just bake and serve! Course: Main Dish Cuisine: Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Make-Ahead Servings: 4 Calories: 286 kcal Ingredients 4 slices bacon 4 pieces chicken (any type: bone-in or boneless, white or dark, skinless or not) 1 cup diced onion 3 cups fresh spinach OR 3/4 cup frozen spinach, thawed and very well drained 2 (15-ounce) cans cannellini, navy or other white beans, rinsed and drained 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained ½ teaspoon dried rosemary salt and pepper, to taste Instructions Preheat oven to 350° F. Cook bacon until crisp in large ovenproof skillet or Dutch oven (see notes if you do not have a pan that can go from stove to oven). Remove bacon and place on paper towel to drain. Leave the bacon fat in the pan. Brown chicken pieces in the bacon fat over mediumhigh heat. When golden brown, remove chicken and place on paper towel with the bacon. 29

Add onion to pan and cook over medium heat until just starting to turn golden. Add spinach, cannellini beans, tomatoes, rosemary, salt and pepper. Crumble bacon into the pan. Mix well and remove from heat. Place chicken pieces over the bean mixture, skin or “nice” side up. Bake, uncovered, for 40 minutes or until instant-read meat thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the chicken but not touching bone registers 165° F. Serve immediately if desired. To serve later, cover and refrigerate for up to 48 hours. Reheat in 350° F. oven, covered, for about 20 minutes until bean mixture bubbles. May also be frozen for up to three months; thaw in refrigerator before reheating or allow up to an hour in oven if not thawed. Notes, Substitutions and Variations If you do not have a pan that can go from stove to oven, use a skillet and transfer to a casserole before putting in the oven.

For quite a while, I’ve been looking around for some sort of Asian dish that would be legal for me (a diabetic). Most that I found online simply had too many carbs for my needs. I started experimenting and tweaking the proportions until I hit the sweet spot of great taste and very low carb. These low carb/keto/gluten-free (and dairy-free) egg rolls without the wrapper will really hit the spot. Not having to deep fry them — as you would do with wrappers — also qualifies as super boat-friendly. The best part? Everyone will love them as just “a good meal.” Just 8g of total carbs per serving (6g net) and no soy as soy ingredients can spike blood glucose in many diabetics, including me. If you are not sensitive to soy, you can use soy sauce in place of the coconut aminos. If you do so, omit the salt. One key is that if you want to use prepared coleslaw mix instead of chopping cabbage yourself, be sure to use one that is just plain cabbage without carrots (carrots have quite a few carbs). The trick is to not use more veggies than called for unless your eating plan allows more carbs in a meal. You can increase or decrease the amount of meat to suit your own protein requirements. Virtually any meat can be used – ground beef, chicken or turkey are all great, as are small shrimp or even leftovers such as shredded beef or chicken. When I first heard of Sriracha sauce, I had been told that it was “quite hot.” It took me a few years to try it and I discovered that while it’s spicy, it’s not unbearably hot and it has a really nice flavor that mixes well in lots of dishes. Note, however, that it does contain sugar. I’m able to tolerate the small amount in one teaspoon of the sauce but other diabetics may not be able to. You can make your own sugar-free sriracha with this recipe.

Pusser’s fans insist that a Painkiller can really only be made with Pusser’s Navy rum, while the Soggy Dollar uses Cruzan. Painkillers taste best when you shake all your nonalcoholic ingredients together and then add the rum. Stir, grate over nutmeg and serve. Note: the non-alcoholic ingredients can be mixed in advance and then poured over rum and ice if you fancy taking it with you to the beach or on a boat trip!

Throw everything into a blender with a cup of ice and blend until smooth and creamy. Drizzle chocolate sauce on the inside of your glass before adding your Bushwhacker mixture.

Dark n’ Stormy – This Dark n’ Stormy was consumed at CocoMaya, Virgin Gorda. Originating in Bermuda – the Dark n’ Stormy has been adopted elsewhere in the Caribbean, including the BVI. We love it so much we even named a sailing regatta after it (a three day race event from Trellis Bay to Anegada and back to Nanny Cay). I think that my favorite Dark n’ Stormy’s can be found on the Willy-T, but they are a staple on the menu in bars Territory-wide. 2 oz Dark Rum (Gosling’s Black Seal) couple dashes of Angostura Bitters 4 oz Ginger Beer Ice Lime to garnish Fill glass with ice and combine the rum, ginger beer and angostura bitters. Garnish with a generous wedge of lime to squeeze in.

Bushwacker – Is it a drink? Is it a dessert? Who knows!? But it’s damn tasty and ridiculously boozy! Said to have been invented in St. Thomas in the 1970s, it was allegedly named after a dog at the Ship’s Store and Sapphire Pub named Bushwhack. This frozen concoction is surprisingly strong with at least 5 different spirits (depending on whose recipe you follow, I like to use 6) blended together to create this deceptively sweet and creamy milkshake treat. Use this recipe to recreate at home: 1 oz Vodka 1 oz Coconut Rum 1 oz Baileys 1 oz Amaretto 1 oz Kahlua 1 oz Creme de Cacao (optional) 1 oz Coconut Cream (Coco Lopez) Ice Chocolate Sauce and whipped cream to garnish www.multihullsmag.com | MULTIHULLS Magazine

The Classic Rum Punch – This Rum Punch was consumed at Hog Heaven, Virgin Gorda A list of Caribbean cocktails would not be complete without a classic rum punch. There are likely as many variations of rum punch as there are islands and cays in the Caribbean. Made with a variety of different recipes across the Territory, it is typically sweet, sour and fruity with the distinguishable red hue given by the Grenadine syrup.

These cocktails should be available in some guise at any bar in the BVI. It’s time for you to visit and find your favorites! So whether you’re practicing these in advance of your Virgin Islands holiday – or trying them when you get back home to try and combat the post-holiday blues. You can now make them at home and create your own little tropical staycation. Bonus points if you brought back authentic ingredients like Cruzan Rum, BVI Gin or Gosling’s. masea Yachts is a new yacht brand that introduces a new approach to traditional catamaran design by building in aluminum instead of fiberglass, and having three decks instead the conventional two. Designed to cross the Atlantic without refueling for long-range cruising and exploration, with sufficient dry and cold storage to remain at sea for up to 6 weeks without re-provisioning, the first 25-meter model has exterior design and naval architecture by Dr. Albert Nazarov, a specialist in high-speed catamarans. Production will be limited, offer a high level of customization – clients are free to choose their own interior designer – and use top quality materials for the construction and outfitting. “I decided to go back to the drawing board when I was in the market for a 20-25m catamaran to cruise the world, but couldn’t find what I was looking for,” says Amasea Yachts founder Jack Wijnants. “They were all expensive, limited in how much the interiors could be personalized, and generally finished using low-quality materials. Moreover, there was very little privacy for guests, as the crew have to use the same galley facilities. The whole story started with our own requirements that could not be met by composite builders. The master suite, for example, can be on the main or lower deck and the yacht is designed with two galleys: one for guest use and a smaller one for the crew. Amasea Yachts is setting up its own shipyard in Turkey to build the hull and superstructure in 5083 aluminum alloy. The hull will be specially reinforced for world cruising in high latitudes. Another new concept is that the interior decor is entirely up to the owner, who can engage his or her own designer. The idea is that the yachts will be finished at a ship42

yard in Italy or the Netherlands and negotiations are ongoing. The first 25m unit is expected to take 18-20 months to complete, but subsequent build times will be 13-16 months with a maximum production of seven units per year. A hybrid propulsion package is also envisaged. About Amasea Yachts An electronics engineer and experienced yachtsman, Jack Wijnants has founded Amasea Yachts in 2018. His family owned various Dutch steel yachts and he already

has a lot of experience in building proven, seaworthy, speedy boats, as for several years he owned a Maltese company that built 15-42m search, patrol and rescue vessels. Design

Engine access is under the aft berths of each hull. It is not expected that one would be sleeping while underway, but we tested the decibel level at WOT just in case – 80db. The walkthrough cabin has sliding doors on both fore and aft ends, which lead to more entertainment areas, but also provide airflow through the main salon. 58

The Leopard 51 PC has an overall length of 51’ (15.54 m), a beam of 25’1” (7.64 m) and a draft of 3’3” (.99 m). With an empty weight of 40,785 lbs. (18,500 kg), full fuel and three people on board, the Leopard 51 PC had an estimated test weight of 45,366 lbs. (20,578 kg). With a pair of 370 Yanmar 8 LV diesels turning 584 mm x 586 mm 4-bladed props we reached a top speed of 23.2 knots at 3800 rpm. As is typical of a catamaran, the performance is rather linear so there really is no best cruise speed. We found her most comfortable to operate at 3000 rpm and 17 knots, where the 20.2 gph fuel burn resulted in .8 nautical miles per gallon and a range of just under 300 nautical miles. For distance cruising, 1500 rpm resulted in the speed of 8.2 knots and a fuel burn of 2.9 gallons per hour. That translated into nearly 3 nautical miles per gallon and a range of 1027.6 nautical miles, with a 10% reserve of the boat’s 396-gallon (1,499 L) total fuel capacity.

The Leopard 51 PC accelerates on an even keel, coming up to planing speed in an average 8.8 seconds and continuing through 20 mph in 12.9. She’s got excellent turning authority, so those boating in waters heavily laden with pot buoys will have little need for evasion tactics. Of course with a boat that should be rock solid in seas, we got flat calm conditions for our test with nothing but a wake here and there to jump, so we just can’t comment on how well she handles rough water. Boat Inspection Aft Deck

On the side deck behind the enormous 4’4” x 4’8” (1.32 m x 1.42 m) aft table, is a transparent hatch. This provides light and ventilation (when open) to the aft cabin on the port side. All the cabins have similar opening skylights.

The aft deck also has a hardtop. Note the black edge near the perimeter of the hardtop; this is the drop down soft enclosure in its stowed position.

Our test boat had the optional tender platform with its 1,000 lb. (454 kg) lift capacity. The optional stainless racks on either side are for dive bottle stowage.

Salon

The high 6’9” (2.06 m) overhead and panoramic windows make the large salon feel even larger.

The U-shaped seating in the salon has a drop down table for additional berth space.

The lower helm in the salon does not have a wheel, as you would typically be on autopilot if you need to be inside.

Open concept galley is available with optional upgrades to a four-burner propane stove and a larger oven.

A drawer-front refrigerator and freezer is below the electrical panel. Simply swing the 40” (1.02 m) flatscreen TV away to access the panel.

Forward Lounge

An L-shaped settee with swing-up tables is flanked by lounge pads to either side.

The forward lounge is covered by a hardtop with a sun pad (accessible via the flybridge). Note the sliding hatch in the center of the hardtop, just in front of the sun pad, that provides additional protection to the lounge area or opens to give better access from the lounge to the foredeck. Also note how the edge of the hardtop has a lip to channel water off to the sides.

Flybridge

The flybridge helm has an adjustable tilt wheel, which is almost unnecessary in tight spaces, as the engines are so wide apart on the 25’ (7.62 m) beam that one can steer and maneuver with the throttles alone.

The entertainment space of the flybridge would make Cleopatra’s barge envious. The space on the left, behind the settee, is roomy enough for deck chairs on the large “back porch”. The backrest bolsters flip to adjust seating to suit.

Bow

The foredeck is massive with permanent seats. The black hatch tops open to the optional crew berth and crew head, respectively.

The flybridge’s wet bar with corian top has additional options shown here: electric grill, icemaker, and a refrigerator. The island serves to protect the flybridge access ladder just in front.

Storage in front of the forward lounge opens to a fresh water tank on left, the anchor windlass center, and an optional 9 kW generator on the right.

The primary helm station on the flybridge has a door just to the center for access to a sun pad measuring 77” x 61” (195.58 cm x 154.94 cm). Again, note the drop down enclosure on the 6’10” (2.08 m) overhead.

Guest Quarters

The double berths of each guest cabin are practically the same size as the master berth.

The master berth has three opening ports for light and ventilation, a berth that measures 80” x 58” (203.20 cm x 147.32 cm) with built-in shelving on one side, a small bench seat outboard at the foot of the bed, and a 6’7” (2.01 m) overhead. The bed hinges up to access the engine. Each guest cabin has its own en-suite bath with standup shower stall.

Observations

We are always skeptical of builder’s claims, so when the description “blue-water” catamaran was pronounced, we naturally took it with a grain of salt. 61

However, when you realize one of the delivery options from South Africa to the U.S. is on its own bottom – belief is warranted. Overall, this boat maneuvered easily, turning in its own length without a bow thruster, so it’s no wonder that Leopard does so well with their charter partner, The Moorings, keeping these models quite busy. It’s easily an owner-operated boat, but there’s also room for privacy, even with a captain aboard.

Thousands of Spectators Turn Out to Watch the Green and Gold Take Victory on Home Waters

he first ever SailGP was witnessed by more than 20,000 people who took to the water on the spectacular Sydney Harbour, providing the perfect amphitheater for the season kick off. Two intense days of racing saw six national teams do battle in the world’s most technologically advanced catamarans, competing to get the first points on the leaderboard and closer to the $1 million Season 1 prize. In front of cheering crowds, the green and gold F50 race boat of the Australia SailGP Team, helmed by local hero Tom Slingsby, won the final race of the day to earn the title in the opening event over Japan. The Olympic gold medalist and his crew of flight controller and tactician Jason Waterhouse, wing trimmer Kyle Langford, grinders Sam Newton and Ky Hurst, and Kinley Fowler gave a masterclass to the rest of the fleet. Though it was pre-race favorite Nathan Outteridge and his Japanese team who were leading going into the final day and looked set to upset the home crowd, Slingsby and his team were quick off the block on the second day, winning 66

the first race and shortly following it up with another race win. A second and a third for Outteridge’s Japan team guaranteed their place in the final match race and a chance to go head to head against the home team and line up against a close friend and fierce rival. The Australian team’s practice over the last few weeks paid off, and they lead the Japanese off the start and never looked back. “We don’t take losing lightly and that first race of the event really shot us into gear,” Slingsby said. “I

couldn’t be happier with how today went. I hold my team to a high standard and they really over delivered. “I don’t know which day had more spectators but it looked unbelievable again today, amazing the turnout for the first event of its kind in Sydney.” Japan finished the first event with 45 points, three behind the Australians. “Compared to the Australians, we’ve only done five days as a sailing team and I think that was what showed against them. But the fact

we were even racing was incredible and to make the match race was just awesome. I am really proud of the whole team and what we have achieved in such a short time,” said Outteridge. Third overall on the leaderboard with 36 points is Great Britain, skippered by Dylan Fletcher. The British team under the command of Olympian Chris Draper was quick off the start and showed moments of promise but admitted they would be studying the data to ensure they were faster and more polished for San Francisco. What’s at Stake San Francisco Bay is known for its strong sea breezes and tidal flows, and will present exciting challenges to each of the six national teams. Each elite sailor will be pushed to the limit as teams attempt to break sailing’s elusive 50 knot (60 mph) barrier for the first time in a race environment. Competing in a total of five shortformat fleet races over the two-day period, the top two teams will face off in a match race finale on Sunday, May 5 to determine the San Francisco SailGP champion. More than 26,000 spectators attended the first-ever SailGP event in Sydney, which saw each of the six teams earn podium finishes at least once. The Australia SailGP Team helmed by local legend Tom Slingsby currently sits atop the rankings, with Japan nipping at the Aussies’ heels. The U.S. SailGP Team – led by helmsman Rome Kirby (Newport, Rhode Island), and further comprised of Mac Agnese (Fort Lauderdale, Florida),

OC Sport Confirms They Will Cease Management of the Circuit

he Extreme Sailing Series stormed onto the professional sailing scene in 2007, and since then has changed how fans, sponsors and media engage with sailing. On the water, on shore, online or on TV, its pioneering Stadium Racing format has set new benchmarks in the sailing industry paving the way for almost every professional sailing event that followed. In 2019 the Extreme Sailing Series brand is set to continue in a new direction, as organizers OC Sport confirm they will cease management of the circuit. Details will be revealed soon. Sport CEO commented: “The Extreme Sailing Series has been a key part of our business for 12 years. It has been a genuine pacesetter and has led the way in inshore sailing. When we launched the Series, we set out to change the way sailing is seen, fuelled by world-class competition. We wanted to make a difference to the sport and we believe we have done that. However, looking ahead, and although we explored many different business models, due to various commercial hits beyond our control over recent years, the difficult decision has been made that it is no longer financially viable for OC Sport to run the Series.

ultihulls have been racing in the RORC Caribbean 600 since the very first race in 2009 when Claude Thelier’s (FRA) Region Guadeloupe, skippered by John Burnie (GBR), set a record that was not bettered until 2015. In recent years the multihull fleet has been on the rise. For this 11th edition, the fleet had a huge variety of designs racing under the MOCRA rating system to decide the class winner. The non-stop race around 11 Caribbean islands attracted multihull crew from Antigua, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Portu-

gal, Spain, Sweden and the United States. With such an impressive fleet, the race record was finally beaten in this year’s race – by two multihulls! Maserati, the Multi 70 skippered by Giovanni Soldini (ITA) crossed the finish line of the RORC Caribbean 600 at 20:49:00 AST on Tuesday 19 February 2019 in an elapsed time of 1 day, 06 hours 49 minutes and 00 seconds, taking multihull line honors and setting a new multihull race record in the 11th edition of the race; beating the previous record by just over one hour.

The extraordinary events surrounding the battle for multihull line honors will be remembered for years to come. Just 48 hours before the start of the 2019 RORC Caribbean 600, Jason Carroll’s MOD 70 Argo (USA) capsized at high speed in training. It seemed impossible that Argo would be racing, but after a monumental effort by the sailing community in Antigua, Argo’s crew and shore team, Argo miraculously made the impossible a reality. On the day of the race start, Giovanni Soldini agreed to a two-hour delay at Argo’s request. An epic match race was to follow over 600 miles around 11 Caribbean islands, racing day and night, both multihulls recording over 30 knots of boat speed. At Redonda, the final island of the course, Argo made a great tactical move to close the gap on Maserati and an intense match race provided the final twist to this fantastic story. Soldini’s Maserati held off Argo to win by just over seven minutes, after 30 hours of explosive action. Both Maserati and Argo broke the race record and the former champion skipper, Lloyd Thornburg congratulated both skippers on their achievements as they arrived back on the dock in Antigua.

“It was amazing that this race even happened. It was the first time in history that a multihull so big came back from a capsize like that – incredible. I was very happy to agree to delay that start, to race against one of the best teams in the world,” commented Soldini. “We had a wonderful race, very windy, very fast, with very good maneuvers from both teams. We had some technical problems at Guadeloupe, we could not use our solent for five hours and we had a small problem with one rudder, but it was a great fight. After Guadeloupe we could see Argo all the time and they were getting bigger and bigger with our problems, but we had a good lead and we kept calm and solved the problem. This is a great race and Antigua has a great community and the Race Committee and Giovanni were super accommodating for us to make the start. Bigger, Better, Stronger... The 48th BVI Spring Regatta is Back!

he BVI Spring Regatta is the one Caribbean Regatta that has something for everyone who attends. Whether you race, cruise, practice or just come to party, they have it all! You can cruise and race your way through the BVI in the weeklong BVI Sailing Festival and Spring Regatta. Starting at Nanny Cay, the Sailing Festival takes on a carnivallike atmosphere with food, drinks, games and live entertainment. There is two days of warm up racing with the Round Tortola Race for the Nanny Cay Cup and the Scrub Island Invitational. 76

Light Air Challenges Fleet on Day 1 BVI Spring Regatta The vibe at the Regatta Village was simply a blast as boats left the docks around 8:30am to make it out to the racecourse in the light air, which presented throughout the day. Reduced 2014 Kurt Hughes 30, Dragonfly. Dragonfly is one of 5 existing Kurt Hughes 30’ catamarans. It was built in Onset Massachusetts from 2009-2014. The hull is okoume marine plywood totally encapsulated with fiberglass and epoxy resin. The deck and bulkheads are ply/foam/ply sandwich and also encapsulated with glass and epoxy. The owner has pictures of the entire build process and receipts for all materials. The rig and sails were designed by Julian Crisp of Sparman USA along with Selden. The boat can be sailed solo and uses a tiller for steering. Autopilot is oversized and works excellent. The electrical system is composed of the most energy efficient tech and the 420 solar grid and lithium ion batteries makes the boat totally self sufficient, no need for a generator or plugging in to shore power.This included running the fridge/freezer and watching movies everyday. Dragonfly has new transoms that stretch the boat to 33’. These additions were done at Shaws boat yard in Dighton, Massassachusetts this spring.The new transoms allow the dinghy to be hauled up on the davits, increase sailing speed, reduce pitching motion and are a great swim platform. 1999 Lagoon 380, 38 South. 38 South has been our floating home for 3 months of the year for the last 4 years while we have been travelling from Grenada to Australia via the USA. The smallest of the Lagoon range, the amazing 380 holds the record for the largest number of cruising catamarans built worldwide now over 800. This used Catamaran is easy to handle and can comfortably be sailed by

one person. Halyards and almost all lines coming back to the helm making sail trimming and handling a breeze. The 380 is very comfortable both at sea and at anchor and most of all is fun to live aboard. This 4-cabin version offers two shared heads and maximizes accommodation. Since the first model rolled of the line, the basic configuration has not changed much over the years making these preowned catamarans an attractive and valuable proposition.
