Speaking of hidden gem neighborhoods, you’ll find plenty of inspiration on how to live like a local within these pages. Our most extensive neighborhood feature ever showcases hip downtown districts, suburban shopping meccas, and everything in between. We encourage you to embrace your sense of adventure and explore different districts so you discover what makes Greater Des Moines des best!
If you’re looking for an event to build your itinerary around, you’ve come to the right place. Check out annual events like the Downtown Farmers’ Market, Des Moines Arts Festival, Capital City Pride Fest, and the Iowa State Fair or exciting special sporting events like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, AAU Junior Olympic Games, and the Savannah Bananas. WHETHER YOUR FAMILY IS THE TYPE TO SEEK THRILLS AND SPILLS OR BE ONE WITH NATURE, THERE’S SOMETHING FOR BOTH THE YOUNG AND THE YOUNG AT HEART IN GREATER DES MOINES.
Spend the day at the amusement park boasting more than 100 rides and a water park with waterslides, a wave pool, and two swim-up bars. Then rest up for another round in the on-site hotel or campground. Adventureland is a vacation in and of itself.
3200 ADVENTURELAND DRIVE, ALTOONA Smash Park
Home to the largest outdoor patio in the state, Smash Park offers activities like pickleball, cornhole, darts, shuffleboard, ping-pong, and arcade games, along with large screen TVs and a smashing food and drink menu.

The kids will love the nearly 25 “goremet” burger options at ZOMBIE BURGER + DRINK LAB. For those who prefer sweet to scary, try a cereal milkshake; a spiked version is available for adults.
Many of our family attractions have that wow factor, some of them literally. The country’s largest skate park features both park and street courses, plus a giant skateable sculpture that spells the word “wow.” Skate where the pros do, or watch those who can.
901 2ND AVENUE, DES MOINES
See why Des Moines was named the No. 1 Minor League Sports Market in America. Root, root, root for the Iowa Cubs (the AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) at Principal Park, or make it your goal to check out the Iowa Wild (the AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild) at Wells Fargo Arena.
1 LINE DRIVE, DES MOINES
233 CENTER STREET, DES MOINES
Soak in nature’s beauty, with sandstone cliffs and dense forest paths, and hike through the creek crossings along Canyon Drive. Little kids squeal with delight when motorists splash them with big waves.
1515 P AVENUE, MADRID
You’ll be home on the range at Jester Park, one of our favorite outdoor playgrounds. View elk and bison herds, and channel your inner explorer with hiking, paddling, equestrian activities, a nature center, and a natural playscape. Prefer to hit the links? Take your pick: an 18-hole championship course, a 9-hole par 3 course, or just-for-kicks mini golf.
11121 NW JESTER PARK DRIVE, GRANGER
Seven Oaks Recreation in Boone is an all-seasons adventure outfitter, with skiing and snow tubes in the winter and kayaks and river tubes come summertime. Float down the Des Moines River under the highest double-track rail bridge in the United States.

You don’t need to own a pair of lederhosen to enjoy this German beer hall’s schnitzel, spaetzle, stroganoff, and 175 types of European brews. And, turns out the Wurst Platter is actually the best.
white corn, white rice, and potato patty. The Mi Patria for two might be the best deal in town.
Des Moines’ best sushi place feels like a New York hot spot. minus the prices and impossible-to-nab reservations. Try the Rolling Pig (when in Iowa, after all), with spicy tuna, bacon, cucumber, and cream cheese topped with avocado and more bacon.
SAVORY OR SWEET, GREATER DES MOINES’ BRUNCH PLATE IS FILLED WITH THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO
University Library Café (3506 University Avenue, Des Moines) didn’t end up with a “Voted Best Nachos” sign on the side of its building by accident. The old-school bar and eatery’s breakfast nachos have achieved near mythical status, with fresh tortilla chips topped with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, onions, peppers, and Monterey cheese sauce. Want your eggs with a side of ’90s hip-hop? Eggs and Jam (1907 EP True Parkway, Suite 102, West Des Moines) serves chronically good dishes like Toast Face Killah and Ludabiscuits, washed down with a Gin and Juice, naturally. Thankfully, you don’t need a membership to join The Breakfast Club (212 E 3rd Street, Suite B, Des Moines), where progressive dishes like Seoul Food loaded hash browns and Cajun Hash are paired with the buzziest brunch booze menu in town, with everything from coffee cocktails to mimosa flights. Now with a West Des Moines location as well. The charming Beaverdale
neighborhood is filled with hidden gems, Motley School Tavern (1903 Beaver Avenue, Des Moines) among them. Pastrami hash or an omelet with wild mushrooms, goat cheese, and fried Brussels sprouts are intriguing choices, but the buttermilk and blueberry pancakes are a gamechanger. The early bird gets the pancake – and much more – at Early Bird (9207 University Avenue, Suite 107, West Des Moines), where a mural-and neon-adorned interior practically begs for Instagram stories. Choose from nine variations of eggs Benedict, which is the best problem you can have. With locations downtown and in West Des Moines’ Historic Valley Junction, St. Kilda (300 SW 5th Street, Des Moines) practically invented the city’s elevated brunch scene. And even though it didn’t invent avocado toast, it sure did perfect it. Drake Diner (1111 25th Street, Des Moines) has been slinging hash in the Drake University neighborhood since 1987. It serves lunch and ››
dinner, but the breakfast bible says if a place serves all-day breakfast, you order it. Say these three words to any Des Moinesian and they’re sure to swoon: Bottomless Bombshell Brunch. Americana’s (1312 Locust Street, Des Moines) now legendary weekend brunch is the place to be, with everything from a grilled cheese station to taco and mac and cheese bars. And of course, bottomless Bloody Marys and mimosas. With a name like Mullets (1300 SE 1st Street, Des Moines), what’s not to love? The food means business, and there’s a party in the back courtesy of a tiered patio with some of the best skyline views in town. You’ll be living your best life with a breakfast burrito followed by an Iowa Cubs game. Waveland Café (4708 University Avenue, Des Moines) has earned a legion of loyal fans, perhaps none as recognizable as actor and Hawaiiowan Jason Momoa, whose patronage earned him his own dish called Da Momoa. The Waveland lays claim to having the best hash browns in the galaxy, and who are we to disagree? With chewy bagels sourced directly from New York, 5 Borough Bagels (13435 University Avenue, Suite 300, Clive) is the perfect place to carb load and get caffeinated. Pair an iced latte with a bagel and lox, and you’ll be speaking with an East Coast accent in no time. Last, and certainly not least, is Little Brother (6587 University Avenue, Windsor Heights), the brainchild of Harbinger chef Joe Tripp, a James Beard Award nominee. This modern American diner dishes out comfort food with Jewish influences, including latke flights and housemade corned beef hash.
Pizza from a gas station? Everyone, including actress Mila Kunis and country singer Lee Brice, sings the praises of Casey’s breakfast pizza, Iowa’s most oddly endearing foodstuff. If you know, you know.

EFFORTLESSLY COOL
Travel + Leisure named the Surety Hotel one of the best new hotels in the world. Step inside the attached Mulberry Street Tavern where the world is your oyster. Or so it will seem when you order some of the delicious oysters and bubbly.
LOCATED IN THE SURETY HOTEL, which was recently named “Chicest Place to Stay in Iowa,” Mulberry Street Tavern (206 6th Avenue, Des Moines) fits the chic bill, with room to spare. See and be seen nibbling on Scotch eggs and lamb shanks while sipping bubbles or bourbon inside a gorgeous space filled with warm woods and leather booths. Don Draper, your table is ready. Proudfoot & Bird (1000 Walnut Street, Des Moines), named for the original architects of the historic Hotel Fort Des Moines, pays homage to the glamorous days of years past with stunning marble tables, plush seating, and a showstopping circular bar that takes peoplewatching to a new level. Soak in the vintage “Sex and the City” vibes while noshing on upscale fare like truffle Parmesan fries, black cod with miso, and warm ricotta on grilled bread. Pair with a timeless cocktail and good conversation for the perfect evening out. The Republic on Grand (410 E Grand Avenue, Des Moines), located on the sixth floor of the AC Hotel in the Historic East Village, has two outdoor patios with stunning views of downtown. (PRO TIP: Time your visit for dusk to see Des Moines at its prettiest.) The ambience of this swanky cocktail bar is as comfy as the signature blue sofas. Cheeseboards, flatbreads, and small plates star here, along with craft cocktails such as the appropriately named Des Moines Skyline.
CHICAGO AND NEW YORK CITY CAN HAVE THEIR PIZZA DEBATE. TEXAS, KANSAS CITY, AND THE CAROLINAS CAN DUKE IT OUT OVER BARBECUE. WE’LL BE OVER HERE, DEVOURING DES MOINES’ SIGNATURE DISH, STEAK DE BURGO.
IN A WORLD FULL of made-for-Instagram dishes and crazy food fusions, Steak de Burgo proves that there is beauty in simplicity. Take a gorgeous, simply seasoned beef filet, cooked medium rare. Drizzle generously with a sauce consisting of butter, fresh garlic, oregano, and basil. That’s it. Anything else is either extra credit or extraneous. In Greater Des Moines, you’ll find this dish on the menus of steakhouses and old-school Italian American restaurants. But few do it better than Simon’s, the unfussy local favorite and Des Moines date-night destination. The complimentary slice of moist red velvet cake at the end of dinner will reaffirm your decision. Life is complicated, but your food doesn’t have to be.
“Steak de Burgo is a Des Moines staple that’s simple yet delicious and really showcases what we are known for: great beef and steaks.”

WITH MORE THAN 20 CRAFT BREWERIES, THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING EXCITING BREWING IN GREATER DES MOINES. WE POPPED THE TABS ON EVERYTHING FROM EASY-DRINKING ALES TO COMPLEX STOUTS FOR THIS BREWERY BUCKET LIST. BOTTOMS UP!
AS THE UNOFFICIAL STATE SANDWICH, THE BREADED PORK TENDERLOIN HAS A BIT OF A CULT FOLLOWING HERE IN IOWA. THESE PLACES PUT A SPIN ON THE BUN-BUSTING CLASSIC. JUST FOLLOW THE BREADCRUMBS TO PORK NIRVANA.
PHOTOS BY ADAM ALBRIGHTThis tenderloin isn’t just a sandwich, it’s a challenge. Literally. The Adam Emmenecker Challenge, named after the former Drake University basketball star, consists of a tenderloin topped with chicken tenders, cheddar sauce, cheese cubes, Texas brisket, a bacon cheeseburger, a pound of waffle fries, and a pickle. Get your photo on the wall or get heartburn trying.
SEVEN LOCATIONS ACROSS THE METRO
Considered the godfather of Des Moines tenderloin joints, Smitty’s Tenderloin Shop offers its classic, thinly pounded sandwich in a chili cheese version and taco style, with lettuce, onion, tomato, chili, cheese, and taco sauce.
Deep-fried fun fact: Some of the best tenderloins come from momand-pop grocery stores. Such is the case with B&B Grocery, an oldfashioned meat market and deli. Try the Italian and chorizo variations of the killer breaded pork tenderloin, featured on the Travel Channel’s “Bizarre Foods.”
2001 SE 6TH STREET, DES MOINES
One bite is all it takes to realize that the tenderloin at Big Al’s isn’t just going through the motions. The secret is that the pork tenderloin is hardwood smoked before being breaded. Go big or go home.
1960 GRAND AVENUE, WEST DES MOINES
A tenderloin for breakfast? That’s so Iowa. Brick Street’s award-winning tenderloin gets the brunch treatment, smothered in homemade gravy and served with eggs, hash browns, and toast. Afternoon nap not included.
114 BRICK STREET SOUTHEAST, BONDURANT
This comfortable neighborhood joint serves the hottest tenderloin in town: breaded with crushed Goldfish crackers covered in spicy sriracha. How cool is that?
2301 SW 9TH STREET, DES MOINES
Head east to Prairie City to the Norman Rockwell-esque Goldie’s Ice Cream Shoppe, whose tenderloin was named “Best Tenderloin in Iowa” by USA Today. Go big with the Magg Combo (tenderloin and cheeseburger) or Mingo Special (tenderloin with sausage and cheese). Road trips have never tasted so good.
304 W 2ND STREET, PRAIRIE CITY
A trendy tenderloin? The Kill-Bill tenderloin at Centro certainly has a case. Topped with Niman Ranch ham, bacon, pepperjack cheese, red onion, garlic mayo, and a sunnyside up egg, this one cleans up nicely and tastes like a million bucks.
1003 LOCUST STREET, DES MOINES
The tenderlings at Iowa Taproom skip the bun pomp and circumstance. These deep-fried strips of breaded pork are served with honey mustard and pair with one of the 99 Iowa craft beers on tap.
