Welcome to Our Neighborhood!

ON BEHALF OF Iowa’s capital city and its surrounding communities, I'd like to thank you for choosing to visit Greater Des Moines! As a transplant who moved here at the turn of the 21st century, I’ve seen firsthand how our region has evolved from a sleepy insurance town to a vibrant, diverse group of communities filled with worldclass venues, attractions, and events. When you see all we have to offer, it will come as no surprise that we’re the fastest growing metro in the Midwest.

As you go through this guide, you’ll get a taste of what makes Greater Des Moines different. Our food scene is more than just sweet corn and fair food on a stick (although we love those too!). Whether it’s sampling authentic dishes like Steak de Burgo or a breaded pork tenderloin, discovering a hidden gem neighborhood spot, or indulging in a five-course meal prepared by a chef nominated for a James Beard Award, our eclectic food scene will have you coming back for seconds.

Speaking of hidden gem neighborhoods, you’ll find plenty of inspiration on how to live like a local within these pages. Our most extensive neighborhood feature ever showcases hip downtown districts, suburban shopping meccas, and everything in between. We encourage you to embrace your sense of adventure and explore different districts so you discover what makes Greater Des Moines des best!

If you’re looking for an event to build your itinerary around, you’ve come to the right place. Check out annual events like the Downtown Farmers’ Market, Des Moines Arts Festival, Capital City Pride Fest, and the Iowa State Fair or exciting special sporting events like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, AAU Junior Olympic Games, and the Savannah Bananas. It’s easy to picture yourself here for a long weekend. Heck, we’ll have you as long as you’d like to stay!

So, look through this guide for ideas. Then go blaze your own trail and experience Greater Des Moines whatever way you’d like. Because here, we have it all!

Refuel for more adventures with some Detroit-style pizza at Parlor, or take in “Saved by the Bell” vibes at The Dam Pub, where you can nosh on a Monte Cristo or fried avocado burger under the glow of a neon sign and ’90s murals.

Date Night and Late Nights

HOME TO THE FAMOUS Downtown Farmers’ Market and a dynamic performing arts scene, the Historic Court District is the heartbeat of the downtown entertainment sector. The nightlife and dining options are abundant, with established favorites like RoCA (small plates) coexisting with new darlings like Blue Sushi Sake Grill. To quench your thirst for pints and all things British, The Royal Mile is a stalwart of the district. Its upstairs hideaway, The Red Monk, featuring 90 Belgian beers, is our low-key pick for the most vibey spot in the neighborhood.

Take in a Broadway show at the Des Moines Civic Center, host to shows like Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen and home to the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra. If the bombast of arena rock is more your thing, head a few blocks north to Wells Fargo Arena. The largest venue in Iowa hosts national touring acts such as Elton John, Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, and Cirque du Soleil.

Gateway to Imagination

HOME TO MANY OF THE COOLEST music and art festivals downtown, Western Gateway Park is an eclectic mixed-use district with green spaces and art at every touch point. No trip is complete without a visit to the 4.4-acre Pappajohn Sculpture Park, with world-class artwork from more than two dozen celebrated artists. Head over to Walnut Street, where two of the best brews in town await. Horizon Line Coffee serves its specialty light roast coffee in reusable glass jars, making its java not only the best tasting, but best for the environment. Down the street, Exile Brewing Company, a pillar of the Des Moines craft beer scene, serves world-class lagers in a brewpub known for its large patio and “Cheers From Des Moines” mural. Check out two of the coolest spaces in town: Hello, Marjorie, with its retro chic vibe and progressive cocktails, and West End Architectural Salvage, where four fascinating floors of salvaged treasures and custom furniture earned the shop its own show on the DIY Network.

University Library Café (3506 University Avenue, Des Moines) didn’t end up with a “Voted Best Nachos” sign on the side of its building by accident. The old-school bar and eatery’s breakfast nachos have achieved near mythical status, with fresh tortilla chips topped with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, onions, peppers, and Monterey cheese sauce. Want your eggs with a side of ’90s hip-hop? Eggs and Jam (1907 EP True Parkway, Suite 102, West Des Moines) serves chronically good dishes like Toast Face Killah and Ludabiscuits, washed down with a Gin and Juice, naturally. Thankfully, you don’t need a membership to join The Breakfast Club (212 E 3rd Street, Suite B, Des Moines), where progressive dishes like Seoul Food loaded hash browns and Cajun Hash are paired with the buzziest brunch booze menu in town, with everything from coffee cocktails to mimosa flights. Now with a West Des Moines location as well. The charming Beaverdale

neighborhood is filled with hidden gems, Motley School Tavern (1903 Beaver Avenue, Des Moines) among them. Pastrami hash or an omelet with wild mushrooms, goat cheese, and fried Brussels sprouts are intriguing choices, but the buttermilk and blueberry pancakes are a gamechanger. The early bird gets the pancake – and much more – at Early Bird (9207 University Avenue, Suite 107, West Des Moines), where a mural-and neon-adorned interior practically begs for Instagram stories. Choose from nine variations of eggs Benedict, which is the best problem you can have. With locations downtown and in West Des Moines’ Historic Valley Junction, St. Kilda (300 SW 5th Street, Des Moines) practically invented the city’s elevated brunch scene. And even though it didn’t invent avocado toast, it sure did perfect it. Drake Diner (1111 25th Street, Des Moines) has been slinging hash in the Drake University neighborhood since 1987. dinner, but the breakfast bible says if a place serves all-day breakfast, you order it. Say these three words to any Des Moinesian and they’re sure to swoon: Bottomless Bombshell Brunch. Americana’s (1312 Locust Street, Des Moines) now legendary weekend brunch is the place to be, with everything from a grilled cheese station to taco and mac and cheese bars. And of course, bottomless Bloody Marys and mimosas. With a name like Mullets (1300 SE 1st Street, Des Moines), what’s not to love? The food means business, and there’s a party in the back courtesy of a tiered patio with some of the best skyline views in town. You’ll be living your best life with a breakfast burrito followed by an Iowa Cubs game. Waveland Café (4708 University Avenue, Des Moines) has earned a legion of loyal fans, perhaps none as recognizable as actor and Hawaiiowan Jason Momoa, whose patronage earned him his own dish called Da Momoa. The Waveland lays claim to having the best hash browns in the galaxy, and who are we to disagree? With chewy bagels sourced directly from New York, 5 Borough Bagels (13435 University Avenue, Suite 300, Clive) is the perfect place to carb load and get caffeinated. Pair an iced latte with a bagel and lox, and you’ll be speaking with an East Coast accent in no time. Last, and certainly not least, is Little Brother (6587 University Avenue, Windsor Heights), the brainchild of Harbinger chef Joe Tripp, a James Beard Award nominee. This modern American diner dishes out comfort food with Jewish influences, including latke flights and housemade corned beef hash.

CHICAGO AND NEW YORK CITY CAN HAVE THEIR PIZZA DEBATE. TEXAS, KANSAS CITY, AND THE CAROLINAS CAN DUKE IT OUT OVER BARBECUE. WE’LL BE OVER HERE, DEVOURING DES MOINES’ SIGNATURE DISH, STEAK DE BURGO.

IN A WORLD FULL of made-for-Instagram dishes and crazy food fusions, Steak de Burgo proves that there is beauty in simplicity. Take a gorgeous, simply seasoned beef filet, cooked medium rare. Drizzle generously with a sauce consisting of butter, fresh garlic, oregano, and basil. That’s it. Anything else is either extra credit or extraneous. In Greater Des Moines, you’ll find this dish on the menus of steakhouses and old-school Italian American restaurants. But few do it better than Simon’s, the unfussy local favorite and Des Moines date-night destination. The complimentary slice of moist red velvet cake at the end of dinner will reaffirm your decision.
