Upcoming Events

The library started the new school year with two events in quick succession.

We’re very excited to have the author Mark Lowery visiting us in February! Mark is the author of a number of humorous novels, and will visit Year 8 to talk about his work and life, and carry out a book signing.

We celebrated Roald Dahl Day on the 13th September with a display of facts about the author, and a Roald Dahl name generator. We also played episodes of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, and introduced a ‘dream jar’ full of inspirational quotes to the library for students to pick when they need a morale boost.

National Poetry Day on 3rd October was a chance for staff to get creative – this year they were challenged to create some ‘Venn poems’, inspired by the Twitter poet Brian Bilston. Examples of the excellent staff efforts can be seen on the library’s social media accounts.

This year the library has signed up to the Book Pen Pals scheme, where authors and schools are paired up and exchange book recommendations by post. We have been twinned with the author Sylvia Hehir – pop in to the library to see her postcards to you, read her books, and send a postcard back!

World Book Day is on Thursday 5th March. Look out for your book tokens and Scholastic book club leaflets which will be distributed through tutors on the day, as well as our big competition and themed lunch during the week.

Book Fair Thanks to all who supported the book fair we raised £224 in commission. We will use this money to buy books for the library, as well as to make a donation of books to the Clark Clinic.

Christmas Recommendations This lovely book is full of beautiful illustrations and inspirational messages. Winner of the Waterstones Book of the Year 2019, it is the story of four unusual friends who share a deep bond. Uplifting and moving in equal measure, this book reminds us that acts of kindness and compassion are never wasted.

As well as providing a potted history of Scotland Yard, this book is jam-packed with brainteasers for all abilities – perfect for keeping the brain ticking over during the quieter moments of the Christmas period!

This book, winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal 2019, is a beautiful tribute to the disappearing language of the natural world. Combining acrostic poems and gorgeous illustrations, this is a book to treasure whether you are eight, or eighty.

This retelling of a classic Norwegian fairy-tale, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, is perfect for cold winter days. Rose was born facing north, and according to folklore this means she will travel far from home. A dangerous journey to a mysterious castle, accompanied by a great white bear, holds the key to her true destiny…

Book Returns All books (excluding textbooks) are due back on Monday 6th January. Librarian: Cath Skipper Campbell College, Belmont Road, Belfast, BT4 2ND.
