World Book Day The library celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 7th March with a range of activities to encourage fun discussion and reading for pleasure. A short story was split into short sections and shared in each class throughout the day, and the library also provided a free World Book Day book to every pupil in Years 8-10. There was also a themed lunch, a tutor time quiz, a display of some of the senior prefects’ favourite books, and a World Book Day treasure hunt round school.
Summer Reading Challenge The library’s annual summer reading challenge is back! All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning one of four great prizes (a voucher from either Boojum, Slims Healthy Kitchen, Starbucks or the cinema) is read either 5 books OR for 30 hours over the holiday period. Full details, and recommendations for Years 8-10, are in the challenge booklet that can be found on Firefly. Click the image to go to the page!
New Stock Mrs Johnston’s Year 9 class paid a visit to the Belfast branch of Waterstones in January, where they spent a morning choosing new books from the shelves on behalf of the library. Author Visit The author of the Knights of the Borrowed Dark series, Dave Rudden, came to visit Year 8 on Monday 4th February. Dave gave a hilarious and energetic talk to the group about his life and books, followed by a book signing, with books kindly supplied by local bookshop Books Paper Scissors. 57% of the boys who attended the event said they would be more likely to read for pleasure as a result of Dave’s visit: in the words of one Year 8, ‘I found the author very funny and he really brightened up our day with his stories. I was still laughing at him even when I was back home and will definitely be looking out for his books.’
