Letter From the Director Friends, Family and Patrons When this year began, we knew it was going to be different. Although we were blessed to not have to close our theatrical doors, we, like most of the world, were forced to modify our norms and do our best to keep students together and creativity flowing. As the hope of a return to “normal” grew with each day, I allowed myself the time and space to reflect on where we were and how we changed as a company and a community. It didn’t take long to realize that a “return” was not only not feasible, it was also not in our best interests. It would be easy to pretend that the last few years didn’t happen and just fall back into our routines. Instead, however, I decided to make a change, to challenge ourselves and to make this show much more about what you are about to see on stage. Looking around our community, it was evident that many were struggling with a variety of different issues. We knew we had to make sure that the students knew that they had a space that they felt safe, loved and free to express their struggles. Rather than allow the students to choose a musical they thought was funny or had catchy music (for the record, 13 is still both of these things), we decided that the adults would choose a show that helped foster this attitude and a space that was about the students more than the production. 13 is a coming of age musical that explores the trials and struggles of growing up. It takes an honest look at what life is like as a young teen. Rather than pretend everything is ok, it puts these issues right on the stage for all to see, and hopefully, discuss. From day one, we told the students that we were going to explore each one of these topics with reverence, care and respect. We included the entire company in the discussions and brought in alumni and members of the community to discuss struggles and teach students about topics in the show such as the Jewish faith, living disabled in an able-bodied world, fostering self-esteem and so much more. The students took to the material in a way that I have never seen before. Each student explored their character truthfully, honestly and respectfully. What’s more, they shared their explorations and personal feelings once a week during a community meeting. They opened up and shared about their life experiences in a way that simply can’t be described. What you are about to see is a fun musical about a group of kids making it through the struggles of middle school. What you didn’t get to see was the connections that a group of teens made over the past 4 months as they shared their own struggles from middle school and high school. It was a much different and much needed production experience. While it may seem strange, I am so thankful that this past year gave us the time to pause and revaluate. I am thankful for the support of our administration and our families in allowing us to explore this content with our students and our community. I am thankful for our students and their dedication to the goal of this production and how much they constantly renewed my drive. Lastly, however, I am thankful for you, reading this right now and being part of our mission to use theater as a way to bring us all together when it’s needed most. Enjoy the show.

-Mr. Marcos Orozco, Director

Directors’ Notes As you may know, the experience of putting together 13 was unique for a number of reasons. Early on in the production process, we, the adult staff of Pegasus, realized that a number of the topics explored in this show were ones that were important to the whole community. In a typical production, we would explore character development and purpose with the specific actor, scene partners and/or cast. We realized that we would be doing a disservice to the rest of our company if we kept these conversations between small groups of students. Thus, before the first rehearsal, we (with heavy input from others who have produced this show before – thank you Jill Bolstridge) came up with a curriculum of sorts. We committed to spending 30+ minutes each week to have a talk with the entire company about an issue in the show. The students quickly and affectionately referred to this as “circle time.” Rather than ignore some of the difficult topics addressed in this show, we attacked them head on and gave the students a safe space to share their feelings, concerns and experiences. It became quite clear that these were discussions that needed to be happening with more than just our students. We came up with a plan to share them with the school community and we would like to share them with you. Below you will see a QR code that links to a Google Doc with the questions we used each week. We encourage you to look at them and use them to have conversations with your kids, your partners, your friends. Theater is enjoyed best as a shared experience so please continue sharing this experience with us and help us make the world a better place, one performance at a time. Nicholas is our Development & Business director at Pegasus and is in charge of developing partnerships with local businesses and sponsors. His department is also responsible for the creation of this Playbill. Although this has been a challenging time for Nicholas going through his last year at CBA and getting into college, he loves spending his time here at Pegasus. Nicholas would like to thank Mr. Orozco, Mr. Lopez, Ms. Heidelberger, Ms. Morrello, and his fellow cast and crew for such a grand experience.

Tim is incredibly grateful for this wonderful opportunity and experience and cannot wait to continue this passion of his in college! He would like to thank his friends, family members, teachers, and mentors for a wonderful high school experience and many great memories! Stephen Willis is excited to be a part of his first and last show with Pegasus Production Company! Stephen is a senior at CBA and is working Sound for the Tech Department. Outside of Pegasus, he likes to play and mix music as a hobby. Stephen would like to thank Mr. Orozco, Mr. Lopez, Ms. Heidelberger, Ms. Morrello, and his fellow cast and crew mates for introducing him to this vibrant community. Andrew Vilchez is participating in his first spring musical as a member of tech. Previous to this spring musical, Andrew has been a part of All Shook Up (Alto Sax 1), Footloose (Tenor Sax 1), Pegasus’s original production, Louder Than Words (Tenor Sax 1), and The Great Gatsby (Music Director/Tenor Sax 1). Andrew has always had a passion for music but there was no spot in Pit for him so he joined tech. He was encouraged by Mr. Lopez, Mr. Orozco, Mrs. Heidelberger, and Mrs. Morrello and stayed in the company even if he was not in the pit band. He is ecstatic to be doing sound for the spring musical.
