Parents, Faculty, Students, Administration, and Patrons of the Arts, As many of you know, the show selection process is one of the toughest things we do as a student-run company. To get an adult and a teenager to agree on anything is tough, but to get a group of teens and a group of adults to choose the same show is almost unheard of. Last year, inspired by their English classes, the students came to me with the idea of Gatsby. Like them, I loved the story, but after reading Levy’s adaptation I was hesitant. I asked the students to explain why this show was important to them and, almost immediately, I said “Great, let’s do it.” When a group of teens is as passionate as they were, you find a way to make things work. To bring Fitzgerald’s story to life, we had to transport ourselves back to the 20’s. To a time of uncertainty, but also a time of hope. To a time where parts of the world felt oppressive, yet other parts of the world could give you a cathartic release. We had to explore the ideas of racism, class disparity and gender equality. One of the aforementioned hesitations I had was that I didn’t know if the students were ready for such heavy topics. I placed a lot of faith in their classroom instruction and dissection of this great American classic. As our characters begin to develop and our interpretation of the story unfolded, we could all see that the world of Gatsby is not so vastly different than the world we find ourselves in 100 years later. The students are all too familiar with these topics; their world views and the maturity they showed while exploring them is at a level that I haven’t seen in quite a while. It is no wonder that they were so drawn to this story and this production. I believe that the students were drawn into the idea that something better is waiting for them “just across the sound.” I believe that the students needed to live through and understand these emotions in a safe space in hope to achieve the same joy and catharsis that so many of these characters are looking for. I am honored to have been part of that process and I am equally honored that you have decided to share in it with us. I hope you are just as moved by this production as I was by creating it with your sons, daughters and friends. Thank you as always for your support and please, enjoy the show. -Mr. Marcos Orozco, Director
