ANNUAL REPORT 2017 - 2018

LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP

Dear Cincinnati Ballet Supporters: Welcome to the “New” Cincinnati Ballet. That was our message as we began the 2017-2018 Season, so excited to share all the new and ambitious happenings in the organization. As we reflect on the past year, we can proudly say the season surpassed all we’d envisioned. A record 70,000 people attended our 63 performances, our overall ticket revenue topped $3.3M, our operating budget hit an all-time high of $10.1M, we debuted a dynamic new logo and brand identity, collaborated with more internationallyacclaimed choreographers than ever before, launched a new Family Series, and the Otto M. Budig Academy experienced tremendous growth. We began the 2017-2018 Season with The Kaplan New Works Series, featuring exciting contemporary choreography – four world premieres, as well as a Cincinnati premiere from Artistic Director Victoria Morgan. Audiences delighted in Penny Saunders’ Nannerl, Johanna Bernstein Wilt’s The Dance Will Set You Free, Heather Britt’s I Couldn’t Fly When, Travis Wall’s Then… Now, and Victoria Morgan’s Black Coffee.

We continued our return to Music Hall with the 44th annual offering of the holiday classic, Frisch’s Big Boy Presents The Nutcracker. With an expanded schedule of 14 performances – our cast of hundreds played to more than 27,000 people and broke previous Cincinnati Ballet attendance and revenue records, grossing nearly $1.4M. The company also toured the production to Michigan, delighting audiences with several performances at the Detroit Opera House. In February, the company staged an exhilarating production of Carmina Burana + Serenade. Cincinnati Ballet and Ballet West, based in Salt Lake City, worked together in a co-production to bring the brand-new version to life for audiences in both cities. The season continued in March with Director’s Cut: Musical Masters which featured Fancy Free, the delightful Jerome Robbins classic with a score by Leonard Bernstein in celebration of their shared 100th birthday year, Balanchine’s balletic firecracker Rubies, and Garrett Smith’s mesmerizing Façades.

In April, Cincinnati Ballet launched a new Family Series with an inaugural production of the family classic, Beauty and the Beast. Featuring Second Company - CB2 dancers mainstage, the narrated series -- which returns this season -- is designed to introduce ballet to audiences of all ages.

The season progressed with a triumphant return to the newly renovated Music Hall for a lush production of Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, choreographed by Artistic Director Victoria Morgan. As the first Cincinnati Ballet production in the refurbished space, the dazzling blend of dance and drama was a powerful and elegant tribute to the Queen City cultural gem.

Bold Moves closed the season with a rich community collaboration. ArtWorks coordinated the creation of a dynamic backdrop, painted by local artist David Buetsche for Murder Ballades. New York City Ballet’s famed Justin Peck choregraphed the work with music by Cincinnati-born, Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dessner. The piece was performed live by Chicago’s Eighth Blackbird, considered one of the top classical/contemporary chamber groups in the world. Our resident choreographer Jennifer Archibald also choreographed a world premiere that later toured to Ballet West’s International Choreographic Festival to rave reviews. First time Cincinnati Ballet choreographer Kate Weare, who also directs her own contemporary dance company in New York, created a reflective work, Show Yourself To Me. The 2017-2018 Season was an exceptional one for the Otto M. Budig Academy. The Academy experienced unprecedented growth -- serving 475 students in the Main and Children’s Divisions and 319 students in the Adult Division. From two to 92 – dance lovers of all ages enjoyed 91 separate course offerings and nearly 4,000 individual classes. The Academy also launched its first Professional Training Division (PTD) designed to support elite-level students on the cusp of professional careers. The 14-student inaugural class included students from across the country. PTD students performed corps de ballet roles in four of Cincinnati Ballet’s seven mainstage productions. The Academy’s summer programs also served 443 students – an increase of 61 students over the previous year, with a gross revenue of more than $668,000 that amounts to 15% growth. Students from three continents, seven countries, and 32 states were represented. In all -- with total gross revenue of more than $1.4M, an increase of 14% over the previous year, and an 8% growth in net revenue the Academy continues to be a key driver of the artistic and financial success of Cincinnati Ballet. Cincinnati Ballet’s Education & Outreach shared the love of ballet with young people across the region. CincyDance! provided free dance classes to 2,000 third graders from a wide range of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds in 43 schools. For a fifth straight year, children from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky came together at Washington Park for a day of dance. Thousands of children performed -- in unison -- a dance they’d spent several weeks learning at school. The event demonstrated how the power of dance connects and unifies us all. As we embark on the 2018-2019 Season, we thank you and are so grateful for your generosity and passion. It is your support that has provided this solid foundation for Cincinnati Ballet. You have our sincere commitment to continue this monumental expansion of the mission and vision of our world-class Cincinnati Ballet. The barre has already been raised – but we’re just getting started.
