Simultaneously, we accomplished a truly herculean task – the construction of our stunning new home in Walnut Hills. Cincinnati Ballet’s Margaret and Michael Valentine Center for Dance opened in the Summer of 2021 and instantly redefined the region’s arts landscape, taking its place as an iconic, architectural wonder. Offering 57,000 square feet and nine remarkable studios we are able to expand our Otto M. Budig Academy and our community engagement programs. Our Academy continued to train students – both in-person and virtually – and in Summer 2021, triumphantly opened our doors to over a hundred of Summer Intensive students, who were the first to train at the Center for Dance. <Need comment on the community Theseprograming>incredible accomplishments would not have been possible without your incredible support. Your unwavering generosity at such a critical time was critical to the continuation and expansion of our mission.
When the pandemic upended the world, we had a singular goal to continue to stage productions. What would the 2020-2021 Season look like? Ballet in the Park at the Procter & Gamble Pavilion at Sawyer Point Park was one of the first productions staged by any arts organization in the country during the pandemic. The innovative production followed strict health and safety guidelines that were lauded by the National Endowment for the Arts and used a best-practice guideline by the NEA for other arts groups on how to create live performances successfully and safely. The repertoire saw a wonderful mix of classical and modern ballet that captivated our park audiences. The safe outdoor production concept that was almost immediately modelled by other ballet companies across the country.
Our ongoing commitment to world-premiere choreography was realized with a digital version of The Kaplan New Works Series. The multi-camera production featured world premieres from top female choreographers. Cincinnati Ballet’s Resident Choreographer Jennifer Archibald, Dana Genshaft, and Helen Pickett as well as works from two of our talent Company dancers.
We made a momentous return in June to the live, in-person performance with Bold Moves Plus at the Aronoff Center for our final show of the 2020-2021 Season. Our fully vaccinated Company was able to perform without masks to a socially distanced audience. Bold Moves Plus featured work from choreographers Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Stephanie Martinez, and Heather ThanksBritt. to your patronage, Cincinnati Ballet has brought joy to so many during an unprecedented time. We appreciate your support and hope to see you at the theater as we celebrate Artistic Director Victoria Morgan’s 25th anniversary and final season. Sincerely,
Our second performance saw another innovative approach to staging during the pandemic –this time in an intimate, indoor setting Cincinnati Music Hall’s Ballroom Dancers presented a buoyant and challenging repertoire of classical and contemporary works, including several world premieres and live music performed by a local jazz group, The Hot Club of Milford.
LEADERSHIPFROMLETTER
Dear Cincinnati Ballet Supporters, The 2020-2021 Season was defined by adaptation and innovation. Cincinnati Ballet leaned into ingenuity and creativity, pivoting to unique pathways to connect with audiences and the community when the stage suddenly went dark. While many ballet companies across the country cancelled their seasons in the pandemic, Cincinnati Ballet thrived with both digital and socially distanced, in-person productions.
SCOTT ALTMAN President + CEO T QUINN Board Chair
We returned to the great outdoors in May for our Spring production of Ballet in the Park at Seasongood Pavilion in Eden Park. This free, community production was a mix of classical and contemporary works and featured Main Company dancers, as well as selections performed by students in the Otto M. Budig Academy Professional Training Division.
The Sue & Bill Friedlander Artistic Director
VICTORIA MORGAN
While the pandemic may have cancelled many holiday plans, Cincinnati Ballet was determined to deliver our beloved The Nutcracker to the region. Once again, our team got creative and partnered with WLWT Channel 5 to create the first-ever broadcast performance of The Nutcracker. The production was also streamed on our website and more than 130,000 viewers from all over the world journeyed with us to the Land of Sweets.

For the fourteenth consecutive season, Cincinnati Ballet ended the fiscal year with an operating surplus thanks to the generosity of the Greater Cincinnati Community. Fiscal responsibility and careful stewardship of the support we receive are of the utmost importance to Cincinnati Ballet. Cincinnati Ballet’s operating income for the 2020-2021 season was $9.3M, and total organizational expenses including capital and non-operating activities were $7.9M. For every dollar the organization received, 65% were spent on artistic initiatives, 32% to administrative costs, and 3% supported fundraising. Cincinnati Ballet strives to present the highest level of artistic excellence whiled maintaining world class administrative teams. Cincinnati Ballet continues to grow an endowment to provide organizational stability. As of July 31, 2021, the endowment market value was $14.9M, an increase of $2.6M from the prior year. As Cincinnati Ballet looks toward the future, we embrace a strategic perspective that includes artistically vibrant productions and continued sustainable growth of the endowment.
