We are so grateful for your support and pleased to share with you the Company’s accomplishments during the 2023-2024 Season, our 60th Anniversary Season. Our mission is to enrich, expand, and excel in the art of dance through world-class performance, a high-caliber academy, and impactful education. How fitting that the commemorative 2023-2024 Season was a shining example of our mission, from the mainstage excellence to our high-caliber Academy and education programs that impacted thousands of local children. Our audience included 53,392 dance lovers in attendance with an overall ticket revenue of $3,140,670. While our annual operating budget continued to grow at $13.61M, the increase reflects the growing cost of doing business as expenses have increased. This highlights the heightened need for additional philanthropic support as we continue to accelerate the thoughtful execution of the organization’s mission.
Our main-stage productions were world-class, with performance after performance concluding with standing ovations for our dancers. These talented artists truly raised the “barre” on the quality of the artform with their technique, athleticism, and grace. Cincinnati Ballet produced full-length classics from worldrenowned choreographers George Balanchine’s Jewels and choreographer Anna-Marie Holmes’ delightfully fun, Don Quixote, both performed in spectacular Music Hall. Audiences were also dazzled by world premieres in MORE ROOM TO PLAY | The Kaplan New Works Series, singular collaborations in Mercurial Landscapes with a debut work from up-and-coming choreographer Rena Butler, with costumes from local fashion designer, Asha Ama Bias-Daniels, and contemporary masterpieces and world premieres from choreographers William Forsythe, Dwight Rhoden, and Peter Chu.
Cincinnati families were treated to a trip to the Land of Sweets for The Nutcracker presented by Sheakley Family with nearly 29,000 patrons in attendance and a record-breaking $2,043,296 in revenue. The regional premiere of Family Series: The Little Mermaid was also a huge hit with more than 6,000 patrons experiencing an undersea adventure at the Aronoff Center. The hour-long, narrated ballet was performed by talented members of Cincinnati Ballet Second Company alongside Professional Training Division dancers and Otto M. Budig Academy students.
The Season concluded with a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our 60th Anniversary Celebration. The Aronoff Center’s Procter & Gamble Hall was filled with joy for this one-night-only performance that saw alumni from six decades of the Company’s history together on stage. The show also included the triumphant return of Interim Artistic Director Cervilio Miguel Amador, who performed with his family in a piece created by choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. What a season it was! These remarkable achievements are thanks to your incredible generosity, commitment, and support of Cincinnati Ballet.
The Otto M. Budig Academy continued its trajectory of growth with 649 students in the Academy’s youth divisions and 1,027 students in the adult division. The Academy’s Professional Training Division continued to welcome talented dancers from across the country. The Professional Training Division is an elite-level program for students preparing for professional careers. The program was so successful, select students were invited to join Cincinnati Ballet’s Second Company – CB2, thus creating a self-sustaining pipeline of talent for the company. We also saw the promotion of two CB2 dancers, including one dancer who began with the Academy at the age of three and is now an apprentice in the Company. The Academy’s summer offerings continued to be destination programs for students from across the country, serving 655 students. With gross revenue of $2,927,412, the Academy continues to be an economic and artistic pillar of the organization.
Our incredible Education and Community Engagement programs continued to foster the love of dance for area youth, providing free dance education to thousands of children through CincyDance! with in-school residencies, followed by classes and lifetime scholarships for 26 talented children. Our CB Moves adaptive dance classes in partnership with Cincinnati Children’s continued to serve children with unique abilities.
As we reflect on the past 60 years of Cincinnati Ballet, we must take a moment to absorb the monumental growth of the Company – from humble beginnings in 1963 to more than 53,000 dance lovers experiencing the 2023-2024 Season. As we begin the next sixty years, we will continue to expand the Company’s connectivity to the community, to push the boundaries of artistic expression and lead the way for the art form.
Thank you for joining us during this truly magical season.
Sincerely,
DEBBIE BRANT President + CEO
