ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017
LETTER Dear Cincinnati Ballet Supporters:
The past year was a great one for Cincinnati Ballet. Thank you for being with us to witness and sustain our quest to bring hope and joy to our community and beyond through the power and passion of the highest quality dance.
VICTORIA MORGAN The Sue & Bill Friedlander Artistic Director
The 2016-2017 Season celebrating Victoria Morgan’s 20th season with Cincinnati Ballet was filled with exciting and inspiring highlights. In addition to artistic triumphs, attendance reached almost 60,000 people, overall ticket revenue was over $2.4M, and our production of The Nutcracker broke all previous revenue figures. The Otto M. Budig Academy and our Education & Outreach programs also experienced substantial growth over the course of the year. The artistic season began with Director’s Cut, featuring seven dazzling works, including three world premieres—James Cunningham’s Prohibition Condition, Ma Cong’s Near Light, and Victoria Morgan’s Patriotic Pas, and two Cincinnati premieres—Justin Peck’s Capricious Maneuvers and Yuri Possokhov’s Fusion, Excerpts. The delightful full-length ballet, Coppélia, with choreography by Kirk Peterson, then played four performances to the amusement of children and families in the fall. The season continued with the ever-growing success of Frisch’s Big Boy Presents The Nutcracker, which —over its 12 performances—played to over 23,000 people and broke previous Cincinnati Ballet revenue and attendance records for the production, grossing almost $1.2M. Our Nutcracker tour to the Kennedy Center was a great adventure for our dancers, Board, and community members who joined us in this milestone experience.
SCOTT ALTMAN President + CEO
In February, we featured a spectacular return production of King Arthur’s Camelot. This cinematic ballet filled the Aronoff Center with spectacle and enchantment. Following in March was the popular Bold Moves, which this year featured the sensational and rarely seen Ohad Naharin’s Minus 16, along with the world premiere of Adam Hougland’s Cut to the Chase. Capping the season was the annual Kaplan New Works Series, featuring four diverse and thrilling pieces, including three World Premieres—Jennifer Archibald’s Never.Nest, Heather Britt’s Karass, and Victoria Morgan’s Somewhere Close to Happiness, and one U.S. premiere—Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Eros Redux. The 2016-2017 Season was a great one for Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy. It served over 500 students through the Main and Children’s Division and almost 300 through the Adult Division. With gross revenue of almost $1.3M, including a 26% increase over the previous year, and a 42% growth in net revenue, there is no question that the Academy is on an exciting trajectory.
GEORGE WILKINSON Board Chair
Last but certainly not least, Cincinnati Ballet’s Education & Outreach reached over 27,000 students throughout the year, helping to bring the beauty and love of ballet to young people throughout our city— many of whom might not have had any other way to observe and celebrate this art form. We think you will agree that—in aggregate—the 2016-2017 Season was an astonishing one. But the best is yet to come. You have our word that we will work to build upon the impact we are able to have in our community and on the arts world in general. That is the story of our past, and it will certainly be the story of our future. With your continued support, truly anything is possible.
VICTORIA MORGAN The Sue & Bill Friedlander Artistic Director

2017 F I N A N C I A L R E P O R T For the tenth consecutive season, Cincinnati Ballet ended the fiscal year with an operating surplus thanks to the generosity of the Greater Cincinnati community. Fiscal responsibility and careful stewardship of the support we receive are of the utmost importance to Cincinnati Ballet. Cincinnati Ballet’s operating budget for the 2016-2017 season was $9.1 million, and total organizational expenses including capital and non-operating activities were $9.6 million. For every dollar the organization received, 78% was spent on the artistic initiatives, 17% went to administrative costs, and 5% supported fundraising. Cincinnati Ballet strives to present the highest level of artistic excellence while maintaining world class administrative teams. Cincinnati Ballet continues to grow an endowment to provide great organizational stability. As of July 31, 2017 the endowment market value reached $13.4 million, 17% growth over the prior fiscal year. As Cincinnati Ballet looks toward the future, we embrace a strategic perspective that includes artistically vibrant ballet productions, a new home for the Ballet, and continued sustainable growth of the endowment.
