20 19 - 20 20 ANNUAL REPORT
LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP
Dear Cincinnati Ballet Supporters: The 2019-2020 Season was certainly a whirlwind, with both history-making accomplishments and unique challenges. First, we must thank all of you for your unwavering support of Cincinnati Ballet. Now, more than ever, our invested community is the driver of our mission to provide world-class dance to the region. Your generosity, patronage, and commitment are truly remarkable. This season marked a truly monumental moment in Cincinnati Ballet history – the groundbreaking of the new Cincinnati Ballet Margaret and Michael Valentine Center for Dance in Walnut Hills. The iconic building – slated to open in summer 2021 – will more than double the space of our current facility and meet the increased demand for our professional productions, as well as our Academy education and outreach programming. The company’s Artistic season will be remembered as one with great momentum and excitement. Even in our shortened season we welcomed 59,000 patrons resulting in $2.8 million in revenue. We began the 2019-2020 Season with The Kaplan New Works Series, the 16th year for the annual series of innovative contemporary ballet. New Works continued its commitment to both groundbreaking dance and championing female choreographers. The diverse repertoire featured works from a trio of female powerhouses – Heather Britt, Andrea Schermoly, and Sarah Van Patten. For a second consecutive year, Cincinnati Ballet company dancers presented world premieres that began in our annual Choreographer’s Workshop. Principal Dancer Melissa Gelfin, Soloist David Morse and Corps de Ballet Artist Taylor Carrasco each debuted wonderful and acclaimed pieces. In October, we took an epic trip down the yellow brick road with the Cincinnati premiere of choreographer Septime Webre’s The Wizard of Oz at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. The colorful production – which featured projection technology, flying effects, and puppetry – was a huge success, with 18,881 patrons sharing Dorothy’s journey to Oz, resulting in more than $850,000 in revenue. Our season continued to journey to magical lands with our 46th annual offering of The Nutcracker presented by Frisch’s Big Boy at Music Hall. No Cincinnati holiday would be complete without a visit to the Land of Sweets with Clara and her Nutcracker Prince. With 14 performances, the whimsical cast of characters entertained more than 28,000 people and grossed nearly $1.4 million.
In the spring, our commitment to the health and safety of our patrons, dancers and staff was paramount as the world reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic. While our productions of Director’s Cut, Bold Moves, and Family Series: Snow White were shifted due to stay-at-home orders, Cincinnati Ballet immediately moved into the virtual space, providing rich, engaging digital content on our social media platforms and website. #CBATHOME was a welcome treat for fans as we brought world-class dance directly to patrons in their own homes, with live classes, free ‘From the Archives’ productions, and behind-the scenes moments. We saw incredible growth on all our social platforms – with more than 51,000 Facebook fans and 12,000 Instagram and 11,000 Twitter followers. From May 2019 - May 2020, our website logged nearly 2.5 million unique views and our email subscribers grew to more than 62,000.
VICTORIA MORGAN The Sue & Bill Friedlander Artistic Director
This past year was record-breaking for the Otto M. Budig Academy. The Academy experienced a second year of unprecedented growth with 592 students in the Main and Children’s Divisions and 344 students in the Adult Division. The Academy also saw 21 students in its Professional Training Division, an elite-level program for students preparing for professional careers. The program continued to be a self-sustaining pipeline for talent in the company, with one student joining Cincinnati Ballet’s Second Company – CB2. The end of the season saw a special reason to celebrate – Second Company dancer Alyssa Manguiat, who began training at the Otto M. Budig Academy as a young child, was promoted to our Main Company. The spring demonstrated the nimbleness of our Academy as instructors and students quickly moved to the virtual space to complete the year’s training. With Facebook Live and Zoom classes, the Academy did not skip a beat. We were so impressed with our students’ determination and dedication. The Academy also moved swiftly to redesign summer offerings. With proper social distancing and safety protocols in place, Summer Intensive was a great success, with nearly 95% of classes being held in-person and the remainder of them online.
SCOTT ALTMAN President + CEO
Our Education & Community programs continued their commitment to providing free dance education to thousands of children through CincyDance! in in-school classes and residencies. Meantime, our Ballet Moves classes in partnership with Cincinnati Children’s made dance education accessible for students with unique abilities. This past season has been a moment in time we will never forget, a moment when we came together in true partnership for the future of Cincinnati Ballet. As we prepare to move into our amazing new Ballet Center next year, we can be sure the organization is strong. We are so grateful to be a part of this community and cannot wait to dance with you again. Thank you for your support.

In February, our dancers wowed audiences to a spectacular display of classical ballet with the production of Kirk Peterson’s Swan Lake at Music Hall. Peterson’s challenging choreography paid homage to the original version, conceived by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 1895. The emotional story of tragic love was truly breathtaking with nearly 10,000 ballet fans in attendance.

FINANCIAL REPORT For the thirteenth consecutive season, Cincinnati Ballet ended the fiscal year with an operating surplus thanks to the generosity of the Greater Cincinnati community. Fiscal responsibility and careful stewardship of the support we receive are of the utmost importance to the Cincinnati Ballet. Cincinnati Ballet’s operating income for the 2019-2020 Season was $9.3 million, and total organization expenses including capital and non-operating activities were $10.0M. For every dollar the organization received, 71% was spent on artistic initiatives, 24% to administrative costs, and 5% supported fundraising. Cincinnati Ballet strives to present the highest level of artistic excellence while maintaining world class administrative teams. Cincinnati Ballet continues to grow an endowment to provide organizational stability. As of July 31, 2020, the endowment market value was $12.6M. During the 2019-2020 Season the endowment contributed $2.5M towards the new home for the Ballet. As Cincinnati Ballet looks toward the future, we embrace a strategic perspective that includes artistically vibrant ballet productions and continued sustainable growth of the endowment.
