Thank you for attending the 3rd Annual Cooperative Concert. This evening’s event represents a pinnacle of your child’s musical experience; they earned a position in their group through practice, a rigorous audition process, and a dedication to performing with excellence. They will perform challenging repertoire for you, their families, and for their musical peers. This has been a tremendous event each year and the bar is consistently being raised. We could not be prouder of our student’s effort, growth, and musicality.
We also encourage you to think of this evening’s performance another way: as an important step in your child’s musical journey. Our middle school musicians will have the opportunity to hear the Batavia Wind Symphony, a group that they should aspire to join in the next year or two. Both our middle school and high school students will have the opportunity to hear the Northshore Concert Band, one of the finest community bands in the United States. It is our sincere hope for all of our young musicians that they continue making music after they leave Batavia. Tonight’s performance by the Northshore Concert Band will be nothing short of incredible. This group has existed for 61 seasons and their artistic director, Mallory Thompson, is one of the finest musicians and directors in the music profession. Their 100 members come from nearly every walk of life – a living monument to the mission of this concert: to illustrate that each student has the opportunity to continue making music throughout their lifetime, after they have left the halls of their high school. We would guess that each one of the members of the Northshore Band has sat where each middle or high school student is right now, an exemplary student and musician, eager to soak up all the knowledge they can before they go change the world. One constant in their lives has been music making and that does not have to change for these Batavia students. They have this shining gift that many adults wish they had – the ability to play music and express oneself in a transcendent way, one way others can only dream about.
We hope you enjoy the fine musicianship that you’ll hear tonight. To all of the parents: thank you for the encouragement that you give to these fantastic young musicians. To all of the young musicians on the stage tonight: keep making music. Keep playing your instrument, keep performing, and keep sharing your gifts with the world long after you leave Rotolo Middle School, Batavia High School, and even after college. Music is the spice of life, and the creation of music, even more so. You’ve invested so much time perfecting that flute trill, tuning that “stopped” French horn, or pursuing that perfect cymbal crash; put those skills to work in your community, in your church, or your Led Zeppelin cover band. How you do it doesn’t matter nearly as much as why you do it: to keep making music and to fulfill your soul. —Chris Owen & Brian Van Kley
