The Water Street Studios Community Outreach Program
Water Street Studios is an all volunteer 501(c)3 organization. As such, the organization depends on support from individuals, corporations, state and local government and grant foundations.
We would like to thank our sustaining partner:
Our artistic development partners:
Water Street Studios has fully funded scholarships for more than 96 students to attend art classes since the fall of 2010. Through these scholarships, students without financial means to pay have explored drawing, ceramics, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking and welding. In addition to these funded classes, Water Street also offers Art Flow, our community outreach arts education program that brings high quality art classes taught by professional artists to students and women at local shelters, low-income housing, and community organizations. Our new Art Flow teen program brings 6 :6 students from surrounding communities together to experience art and cultural activities in our classrooms at Water Street (see page 1). These programs exemplify our mission to bring art education and appreciation to all residents of the Fox Valley area. For more information about Community Outreach or if you are interested in helping to support our programs, contact Jim Kirkhoff, Director of Development, development@waterstreetstudios.com or call 630.761.9977. Photography ■ Private Photography Study Do you have a digital camera, but are struggling to understand the instructions? Or have you had one for a while and are not really sure what all of those buttons and knobs do. If you do not know the difference between “aperture priority” and “shutter priority” or why white balance is important (but you want to), this is a great class for you. The instructor will take you through the basics of the world of digital photography to help you make the most of your camera. These private lessons will help. Students are asked to bring in examples of pictures they have taken in the past and what they like about them. This will lead into discussion on the importance of different camera controls like aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance. Class exercises will be planned to exploit all of these different elements. □ Instructor Jim Kirkhoff □ $80/90 minute package or $150/180 minute package PVT3306-A @BAT and @STC
Printmaking Note: all printmaking classes will meet at PrintLab 117 W. Main Street in St. Charles. Printmaking equipment for these classes was made possible through grants from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley and the Kane County Riverboat program. ■ Screen Print Workshop (13+) Around the late 18th century, silk mesh became more available for trade to Western Europe. Since then, screen printing has taken off as a a wonderfully versatile and affordable form of printmaking. Today, screen print serves a remarkable aesthetic seen in underground art and DIY culture. The screen printing process involves applying a stencil to a tightly stretched mesh fabric. The mesh allows ink to flow through the open areas of the stencil. An image can be printed on anything that is flat! In this workshop, students will learn the foundations of screen printing to create a unique work of art. Class may be repeated. Recommended Materials: Micron pens, Sharpie markers, clear packing tape, clear cellulose acetate sheet, sketchbook and pencils. Max 5. □ Instructor: Kimberly Fredricks □ M $25/NonMembers $35 □ F Sept 13 ► 7-9p PRT3308-A @STC PrintLab □ Su Sept 15 ► 5:30-7:30p PRT3308-B @STC PrintLab □ F Sept 20 ► 7-9p PRT3308-C @STC PrintLab □ F Oct 4 ► 7-9p PRT3308-D @STC PrintLab □ F Oct 18 ► 7-9p PRT3308-E @STC PrintLab □ F Oct 25 ► 7-9p PRT3308-F @STC PrintLab

■ Relief Printmaking (13+) Relief printing is a form of expression in which the surface of a block yields the image and the areas that do not print are cut away. It is the oldest form of printmaking and is used to communicate ideas through symbols, imagery and printed words. Ink is rolled onto the block, paper is placed upon it and pressure is applied to transfer ink from block to paper. The class will focus on woodcut relief print techniques to create engaging imagery. Required materials: 5 piece Mikisyo Power Grip woodcarving tool set. Recommended materials: sketchbook, pencil, fine and extra fine point Sharpie marker, and soft rubber brayer. □ Instructor Kimberly Fredricks □ M $145/NonMembers $165 □ M, W Sept 16, 18, 23, 25, 30, Oct 2, 7, 9 ► 7-8:30p PRT3301-A @STC PrintLab □ T, Th Oct 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29, Nov 5, 7 ► 6-7:30p PRT3301-B @STC PrintLab ■ Linocut Collage Lab (12+) Linocut is a variant of woodcut in which the relief printing matrix is made of softer linoleum. A design is drawn onto the surface which is then cut with gouges, v-tools and chisels. The uncarved areas yield a mirrored image when printed. Students will learn to create imagery on linoleum, pink erasers, and flat rubber discs which will be used to experiment in print collage. Required materials: Speedball lino cutter set. Recommended materials: sketchbook, pencil, extra fine sharpie markers. □ Instructor Kimberly Fredricks □ M $125/NonMembers $145 (includes mounted linoleum block(s), paper, pink erasers, lino discs) □ T, Th Sept 19, 24, 26, Oct 1, 3, 8 ► 6-7:30p PRT3304-A @STC PrintLab ■ Collagraph (13+) Collagraph is a type of printing matrix that results in an impression that is texturally and tonally rich. The word collagraph derives from the Greek kolla, meaning “glue,” and graphos, “to write”. Creating a collagraph is a constructive process: pieces of cardboard, tin foil, feathers, tape, fibers, fabrics, string and so on are glued to a base plate so that objects are in low relief on the surface. Ink is wiped into the collaged features of the plate. When printing, the paper is forced to stretch into the nooks and crannies to grab the ink. Students will create a variety of collagraph plates and learn to print them with intaglio and relief printing processes. Required materials: small bottle acrylic gloss medium, Krylon crystal clear acrylic coating #1303. Recommended materials: sketchbook, xacto knife or box cutter, flat or bastard file, 5 piece woodcarving tool set, Elmer’s glue, spackling paste, fabrics, ribbons, leaves, tin foil, feathers, sand paper, various textured tapes, or any other interesting textured items no thicker than a penny. □ Instructor Kimberly Fredricks □ M $145/NonMembers $165 □ Su Sept 22, 29, Oct 6, 13, 20, 27 ► 6-7:30p PRT3303-A @STC PrintLab □ M, W Oct 21, 23, 28, 30, Nov 4, 6 ► 7-8:30p PRT3303-B @STC PrintLab

■ Color Screen Printing (13+) This class takes screen printing to the next level! Students will apply skills acquired from the screen print workshop to create colorful screen printed works. In class, students may prepare hand drawings of each color layer or design it on your laptop. A variety of registration techniques will be taught to keep imagery tight throughout each stage of printing. Class may be repeated. Recommended Materials: Micron pens, Sharpie markers, clear packing tape, masking tape, clear cellulose acetate sheets, sketchbook and pencils. Max 5 students. □ Instructor Kimberly Fredricks □ M $125/NonMembers $145 □ Su, F Nov 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 ► 7-8:30p PRT3309-A @STC PrintLab □ T, Th, F Dec 3, 5, 6, 10, 12, 13 ► 7-8:30p PRT3309-B @STC PrintLab ■ Color Relief Printmaking (13+) This class will take relief printmaking to the next level with the introduction and exploration of color relief printmaking. Students will learn the reductive woodcut process and multiple block printing process to achieve a multicolored image. The reduction woodcut process allows the printmaker to print as many colors as s/he wishes, yet only uses one block to print all the colors from. The multiple block process uses a separate block for each color with a final key block to bring the image together. Students will also learn registration techniques to keep imagery tight throughout each stage of printing. Required materials: 5 piece Mikisyo power grip set. Recommended materials: sketchbook, pencils, fine and extra fine point Sharpie marker, and soft rubber brayer. □ Instructor Kimberly Fredricks □ M $220/NonMembers $250 □ M, W Nov 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27, Dec 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18 ► 7-8:30p PRT3302-A @STC PrintLab
