The Board of Trustees at Christian Brothers High School is comprised of 10 volunteers dedicated to safeguarding and advancing the school’s Catholic, Lasallian mission. Before joining the Board of Trustees, candidates undergo training on Lasallian charism (history, spirituality and philosophy of education) and Policy Governance – a model used by Lasallian schools throughout the District of San Francisco. This summer, the board welcomed new members, Brenda Fleming, Heather Ruple, and Eileen Schuering. Lincoln Snyder ’95 is taking on the role of Board Chair. The Policy Governance model comprises an inclusive, written set of goals for the school, called Ends Policies, which guide the board in monitoring the performance of the school and its CEO. Ends Policies help ensure that Christian Brothers High School adheres to the vision of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the District of San Francisco. “Last year, a group comprised of board members, former trustees, faculty and staff worked together to revise the Ends Policies. A new policy is now in place to ensure that the board looks closely at the long-term sustainability of the school. I am looking forward to working with Lorcan Barnes and this year’s board to advance the Catholic, Lasallian mission of the school and ensure that the legacy of Christian Brothers High School extends well into the future,” says Lincoln Snyder ’95.

Message From the President Several times over the past year, I received emails from coworkers and friends encouraging me to watch online videos featuring a young boy who goes by the name of “Kid President.” His most famous, the “Pep Talk,” has been viewed more than 29 million times. The underlying theme to the growing assemblage of “Kid President’s” works is encouraging viewers to consider the ways they can be more “awesome!” Today, I watched his “Pep Talk for Teachers and Students.” In it, he touches on several subjects including history. “We can’t just study history,” he says. “We’ve got to make history.” That small phrase got me thinking about Christian Brothers High School, the history that has been made here, and the history in the making. Our cover story touches on the small group of determined people who made history with their efforts to bring the Christian Brothers and Lasallian education to Sacramento. It touches on a few of the changes and improvements that were only possible thanks to the efforts of dedicated Brothers and supporters who were willing to give of their time and treasure to ensure that the school could continue to meet the needs of students. Finally, it speaks to the importance of continued support in sustaining the school. I am thrilled to report that in our 138th year of Catholic, Lasallian education in Sacramento, Christian Brothers High School continues to thrive. Student enrollment is up by 4.4 percent and we welcomed our largest freshman class in six years. Hard work, planning, teacher training, and a significant infrastructure investment paid off with the successful launch of an all-student iPad program. Our international student community has grown from 12 students last year (the program’s first year) to 18 students this year. The Victor and Phela Vesci Strength and Fitness Center opened its doors in August. The George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center will open in the spring of 2014. In the past 12 years, we have made more than $20 million in improvements and additions to our campus including the Science Math and Technology wing (2002) and athletic field house (2008). Most importantly, we lead the region in needbased tuition assistance. In 2013-14, we are distributing $2.15 million in tuition assistance to 393 deserving students (37.5% of our students). The Annual Report of Gifts (see page 26) and list of donors reflects gifts received during the July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013 time period. I am grateful to all of the alumni, families and friends of the school who share of their resources to ensure that Christian Brothers High School continues to thrive. Your generosity ensures that we continue to make history. Please know that we are careful stewards of your gifts and continue in our commitment to fiscal responsibility while maintaining the CB tradition of excellent, value-centered, Catholic, Lasallian education. In the words of “Kid President,” you are awesome! Live Jesus in our hearts!

Celebrating137Years of Giving It has been said that the first “official” capital campaign for Christian Brothers High School (known in 1876 as the St. Patrick Institute) began in a horse and buggy. At the reins, the formidable Miss Maggie Cunningham who was joined by Mrs. M. Horan and Mrs. Mary Scribner. The women launched a door-to-door effort to raise the remaining $3,000 to bring the Christian Brothers to Sacramento. Father Patrick Scanlan, who operated a school for children at St. Rose’s Church in Sacramento, had been working with a committee and collecting money for several years. He even purchased property on K Street between 11th and 12th on which to build a school. His goal, enticing the Christian Brothers into operating a school for the boys and young men of Sacramento. Collectively, the group’s efforts were successful, convincing Catholics and non-Catholics, who understood the value of educating their children, to make a sacrifice for a public gain of a better educated, more capable younger generation. On July 17, 1876, Principal-Director Brother Cianan Griffin, FSC, California Governor William Irwin and Adjutant General Walsh of the State of California welcomed 200 students to the fourroom school. Each classroom could accommodate 65 students and the school could house 20 live-in boarders. Tuition ranged from $12 to $40 for a year, or from $3 to $10 for a two and one-half month session. In a tradition that proudly continues today, the Brothers were committed to assisting students whose families could not

afford the fees. By year’s end, three additional classrooms were added and school enrollment had increased to 250 thanks to growing awareness of the great work of the Brothers. Fast forward 138 years, and CB continues to grow and thrive thanks to an enduring foundation of educational excellence, innovation and community. The “great work” of the Brothers lives on through their strong partnership with the dedicated faculty and staff who carry on the Catholic, Lasallian mission. The school is in the final stages of the Building on the Tradition Campaign – Phase II which brought the field house and the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center (opening April 2014) to campus. Phase I added the Science, Math and Technology wing in 2002. Student enrollment is strong with 1,044 young men and women. There have been numerous campaigns through the years. In 1900, Br. Vellesian Mallon, FSC laid the groundwork for a campaign to add an additional wing and expand the chapel of the K Street campus. In 1922, the school had outgrown its K street location. The Diocese of Sacramento donated land at the corner of 21st and Y (Broadway) Streets. In September of 1924, students were welcomed to the new school. Area businessmen launched a campaign in 1926 to furnish the school. In 1927, a gymnasium was built on the second floor between the classrooms and living quarters. In 1955, the Brothers and the Diocese of Sacramento laid out a plan for a new school at a different site. With aging facilities at St. Francis High School (25th and K Streets) and St. Joseph’s Academy (9th and G Streets) and Christian Brothers, Brother Bertram Coleman, FSC, proposed that the schools be brought together at one location in a co-instructional environment. A campaign was launched to create Bishop Armstrong High School which opened its doors in 1956 at the school’s current location, then known as Sacramento Boulevard. The school operated as a co-institutional facility until the end of the 1963-64 school year. “I think that Fr. Scanlan, Maggie Cunningham, Br. Cianan, Br. Bertram and all of the early benefactors would be proud to see their vision realized through the young men and women of Christian Brothers,” says President Lorcan Barnes. “And, I believe they would marvel at the list (see Annual Report pg. 26) of alumni, parents, grandparents and friends who give so generously to ensure that we continue to fulfill our mission of touching the hearts and minds of the students entrusted to our care.”

The 2013-14 school year is off to a fantastic start. The hard work, planning, yearlong teacher training, and infrastructure investment paid off in August when more than 1,000 iPads merged onto CB’s new superhighway as CB began its one-toone student iPad Program. The International Student Program has grown from 12 students last year (the program’s first year) to 18 students this year. The Victor and Phela Vesci Strength and Fitness Center opened at the end of August, enhancing the strength, agility and safety of all student-athletes, improving the health and well-being of all students, and ensuring that all teams are in top physical condition when they take to the court, the pool or the field. CB proudly continues to lead the region with $2.2 million in need-based tuition assistance distributed to 393 students. Further, CB is the only local school earning a place on the Washington Post’s 2013 list of “America’s Most Challenging Private High Schools.” “In just the past 15 years, we have invested $22 million in campus additions and enhancements,” says Barnes. “I am proud and grateful to say that we have done this without accumulating debt. That is only possible thanks to the donors who supported Phase I and Phase II of the Building on the Tradition Campaign. Yet, looking back even further, CB thrives today thanks to the generous support of all of the people who believed in the values-based education that is at the heart of the Lasallian philosophy and gave to ensure its continuity to future generations of students, especially those in need.” “The Brothers were very good to me,” says Ken Belke ’37. “They made it possible for me to go to college. Back then, we could choose if we wanted to study on a commercial or academic track. I chose academic and I was very well prepared for college. I also made lifetime friends and the camaraderie we had continues today through the Brotherhoods – a group of alumni, originally from the 1930s and 1940s, who meet monthly for lunch and socializing. Although we have lost some members in recent years, the group keeps us connected to the school.” After attending UC Berkeley for a year and one-half, Belke transferred to University of San Francisco. “It was more like Christian Brothers,” offers Belke. “The classes were much smaller than at Berkeley. The teachers knew you and cared about you.” Belke returned to Sacramento following his USF graduation and worked as an accountant. “I remember Jack Stassi ’40 and Br. Bertram (Coleman) coming to my office at work and telling me that the Brothers would be selling the winery and that the students would no longer be benefitting from the proceeds as we did back in my day. Br. Bertram was working with Jack to start a fund drive to go back to graduates and ask for money. They invited me to make a presentation to the Board of Regents. When I got there, Br. Bertram said the group was voting on a new Regent and that it was going to be me. I was at Christian Brothers during Br. Bertram’s first year of teaching in 1936. We loved him! Years later, all of our wives loved him. He was a wonderful man and you didn’t tell him no. So, that is how I became a Regent.”

“When I was a kid, my family could not afford tuition,” says Sal ‘Chado’ Vasquez ’52. “I thought I would go to Sac High. One day, Br. Bertram came to Holy Angels, called me into the office and asked if I was going to Christian Brothers. I told him no, I couldn’t afford it. He told me that if I kept my nose clean, I didn’t have to worry about it. I will never forget that day and I wasn’t the only one. Now, I give to CB because the Brothers really formed me and I just hope that more kids can have that.” “I know that many of the women who attended Bishop Armstrong feel displaced,” explains Linda Giese ’59. “But, we have a place here. I’m lucky because I have an additional family connection, my son Jeff graduated in 1981 and three of my grandchildren are graduates (Kayla Giese ’09, Eddie Ralph ’10 and Jamie Ralph ’12). So much more is available to the students of today. Back when I attended Bishop Armstrong (CBHS from 1956-1969), boys were in one wing, and girls were in another wing. It’s so much better and healthier with the students interacting with each other, learning from each other. It isn’t just about dating like it was when we would pass the boys in the hallway or see them at lunch. And, the school really prepares the students for college. The adjustment is a lot easier after Christian Brothers.” In November of 1989, Bishop Francis Quinn of the Diocese of Sacramento and Brother Mark Murphy, FSC, Brother Visitor of the District of San Francisco, formally announced the intention of CB to become a coeducational institution. With the imminent closure of Bishop Manogue High School, the school invested approximately $400,000 in campus renovations to ensure CB could meet the needs of an expanding student body that included boys and girls. Approximately two-thirds of the students and 13 teachers from Bishop Manogue joined the CB community, including Jill Bennett, Chrys Cassetta and Holly Peterson, Ed.D., who continue to teach at CB today. Bobbi Pires ’76 is a Bishop Manogue High School alumna and avid volunteer with the Alumni Association and The La Salle Club. “CB made a place for the young women and alumnae of Bishop Manogue when the school closed. We have a home here and I’ve always felt welcome. I’m proud to support the mission of the school and will continue to work to help make sure that more young women and men have the opportunity to benefit from a Christian Brothers education.” “I believe strongly in the mission of Christian Brothers, the education and the values,” says Bob Slakey ’48. “Enter to learn, leave to serve says it all. I also believe it can only succeed if people with resources step up and support it.” 17. Br. Christopher Donnelly, FSC, Br. Donald Johanson, FSC, Br. Thomas Pham, FSC (now Thomas Pham) 18. “As an innovator in education, St. John Baptist de La Salle recognized that different localities, times and conditions demanded different advanced studies and solutions,” says Barnes. Throughout CB’s almost 138 years in Sacramento, we have certainly adapted to changes in location, times and educational needs. Thankfully, generations of Sacramentens like Maggie Cunningham have made sacrifices for a public gain of a better educated, more capable younger generation. As we prepare to celebrate the spring opening of the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center, I am grateful for all of the capital campaigns, official and unofficial, that collectively ensured that Christian Brothers High School today, is the place to be.”
“To touch the hearts of your pupils and to inspire them with the Christian spirit is the greatest miracle you can perform and of which God expects of you.” — St. John Baptist de La Salle

2013 Lasallian Educator of the Year KIRK PURDY
Since 1997, Director of Guidance Kirk Purdy’s caring demeanor, willingness to listen and seemingly tireless dedication to the students of Christian Brothers have helped countless students and their parents navigate the oftentimes rough waters of high school life and college planning. As men’s varsity golf coach for the past 10 seasons (eight-time section champions) and freshman basketball coach during his first five years at the school, he’s been a mentor, motivator and friend. Purdy’s peers and school administrators selected Kirk Purdy as the 2012-13 Lasallian Educator of the Year. “Kirk, you enjoy the respect and affection of our community because you embody the qualities of a model Catholic, Lasallian educator,” said President Lorcan Barnes to a visibly surprised Purdy.
Principal Mary Hesser, Kirk Purdy, President Lorcan Barnes
“I have known Mr. Purdy since my brothers were freshmen at CB in 2004,” said Hunter Rappleye ’13. “To me, he is more than a golf coach, he is my third parent while I’m at school. He has taught me lessons that go beyond the golf course that I will never forget. He demonstrates the Lasallian Core Principles and I believe he is the person most deserving of this award.” “When Kirk Purdy took over the counseling department in 2010, I knew that I was leaving it in capable, caring hands,” says Principal Mary Hesser. “He is devoted to the students of Christian Brothers and willing to do whatever it takes to shepherd them through the challenges of adolescence. He is a tremendous leader whose vision and commitment bless our community.” “I was very surprised to hear my name called,” says Purdy. “There are so many phenomenal educators at Christian Brothers High School. When I think about them and the people who have won this award in years’ past, I can’t believe that I was nominated, let alone selected. This definitely motivates me to work harder, find new ways to serve students and show our community that I will live up to this honor.”

fter more than 18 months of planning, collecting and compiling data, followed by an intensive on-site visit that included classroom visits, meetings with parents, students, faculty and staff, the CBHS educational community received notice in July that it earned the highest rating of accreditation by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA). Christian Brothers High School was one of four schools enlisted to pilot the groups’ new Ensuring Educational Excellence (E3) accreditation process. “It was an honor to collaborate with WASC and WCEA to pilot a program that will assist these tremendous organizations as they work to improve education throughout the western United States. In granting CB a full six-year accreditation, WASC/ WCEA affirmed that CBHS is highly effective as a trustworthy, college preparatory, Catholic institution of learning,” explains Principal Mary Hesser. “It was heartening to earn the highest possible scores in our accreditation reviews and receive the maximum six-year accreditation status. However, I speak for all of us when I say that we are not content to rest on our laurels. We will continue to look for innovative ways to inspire high achievement and ensure that all of our students are prepared for success in college and as they take their places as ethical leaders in an interdependent, diverse and rapidly changing world.” Christian Brothers Connection

Vocal Jazz Takes First Place at Reno Jazz Festival CB’s Vocal Jazz ensemble performed at the Reno Jazz Festival (lauded as one of the premiere jazz festivals in the nation) in April where they competed against the top high school groups from Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada. Christian Brothers was one of only three schools in its division receiving straight superiors and thanks to a stellar performance, the team earned first place. Congratulations to choral instructor, Holly Slabbinck, and all the members of Vocal Jazz: Sarah Hotz ’13, Lauren Adams ’14, Hannah Palmer ’15, Maura Tomassetti ’15, Sylvia Francisco ’13, Allie Lian ’14, Giovanni Salcedo ’13, Mark Lagunas ’13, Brandon Meyer ’13, Kaalen Kirrene ’13, Sergei Vasylyev ’14 and Will Richard ’13, for putting their hearts and souls into the art of vocal jazz. Their love of music radiated and was infectious. The crowd went wild, the clinician showered them with accolades, and the results on the score card all made for a wonderful day.
CB Celebrates Grand Opening of Victor and Phela Vesci Strength and Fitness Center After passing through an arch of baseball bats held aloft by seven varsity players, Phela Vesci cut through the ceremonial blue ribbon and opened the door to the Victor and Phela Vesci Strength and Fitness Center.
Phela Vesci receives a warm welcome from members of CB’s varsity baseball team.
“I never imagined this,” said a visibly surprised Vesci. With tears welling in her eyes, “This is so much more than I expected.” Back in 2012, Vesci contacted Christian Brothers High School to see if there was something she could do to support the baseball program and honor her husband, Victor, who coached baseball at Christian Brothers in the 1940s. After speaking with Assistant Director of Advancement, Nancy Smith-Fagan, who consulted with the school’s athletic directors, a plan was set in motion. Vesci had decided to donate $100,000 toward converting a vacant portion of the field house into a cardio and core conditioning room. The money was to be used to purchase new cardio-training equipment and upgrade facilities and equipment. Best of all, the new facility would benefit more than the baseball team, it would enhance the strength, agility and safety of all student-athletes, improve the health and well-being of all students, and ensure that all 28 varsity teams are in top physical condition when they take to the court or field. The La Salle club generously added a $10,000 gift. Parents, friends and alumni attending the March 2013 auction added $28,000. CB parent, Tom Jones, of Hilbers Construction, shared his expertise as did Steve Barsanti ’78, CB’s director of facilities. CB’s maintenance crew also jumped in and enthusiastically embraced the project.

CBHS Celebrates 137th Commencement
“Four years ago, when you entered CB as nervous freshmen, you came from more than 50 different grade schools, more than 50 neighborhoods. You were a very diverse group. But, here you are four years later, you have become one great class.” declared CB President, Lorcan Barnes, to the Class of 2013. On Friday, May 24, the illustrious ranks of CBHS alumni increased by 211 young men and women who earned their diplomas as the school celebrated its 137th commencement ceremony. The day began with Baccalaureate Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament officiated by the Most Reverend Bishop Jaime Soto. Following Mass, graduates enjoyed a luncheon at the school and celebrated their graduation that evening at the Memorial Auditorium.
Members of the Class of 2013 are attending colleges and universities in 22 states and two foreign countries.
The event proved to be the ideal ending to four years of hard work and special memories. Senior Class President Niel Valmores (Seattle University) served as master of ceremonies. Ryan Dempsey (California Institute of Technology) delivered the Valedictory Address with Alex Daly (Northwestern University) providing the Salutatory Address. In addition to conferring diplomas, a number of students received awards including:
Samuel Howard, Justin Cappello, William Richard, Michael Neal
The La Salle Scholar – Athlete Awards: Hunter Rappleye and Mallory Velte The De La Salle Medal for Excellence in Religion: Clara Johnson The Jack Witry Award: Vincent Johnson, III; and Nicole Skow The Academic Excellence Award: Ryan Dempsey The Brother Ambrose Award for Lasallian Service and Loyalty: Tatijana Bowman

Ambassadors Celebrated
Christian Brothers High School celebrated its most generous supporters at the 29th annual Ambassadors’ Club Dinner. Attendees at the event, held October 23, at Christian Brothers enjoyed a special performance by CB’s Jazz Trio during the social hour. CB alumnus, Mark Orr ’94, made the trek from St. Mary’s College of California, where he serves as athletic director, to provide the keynote speech and reflect on the many blessing of athletics and Catholic, Lasallian education. CB’s President, Lorcan Barnes, provided a state-of-the-school message followed by the evening’s highlight, the presentation of the 2013 Ambassadors of the Year award to The La Salle Club. Legend has it that The La Salle Club was created thanks to a particularly “unholy” 45-6 gridiron trouncing of Christian Brothers by a better equipped Sacramento High School. Its first meeting, held in the basement of Cy Puliz’s home, included salami, cheese, beer and cigars for inspiration along with the proverbial passing of the hat that generated $20.25 seed money (enough to pay for a week’s lodging back in 1939) to begin purchasing football equipment. “Seventy-four years later and I can almost smell the cigar smoke, taste the beer and feel the misery of that loss to Sac High,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “Seventy-four years

later, and The La Salle Club continues its noble efforts to serve the student-athletes of Christian Brothers High School and instill the vital life lessons of fair and clean sportsmanship and the ideals of citizenship and important life lessons that come from sports.”
Over the years, The La Salle Club has organized countless events including La Salle Club Frolics, Goose Stew dinners, student boxing matches, homecoming dances, golf tournaments, the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame Dinners. Early on, the group purchased football equipment, refurbished locker rooms, created, maintained and repaired athletic fields. Through their efforts, they have sponsored football uniforms, baseball pitching machines, weight lifting equipment, a 15-passenger van, golf carts, wrestling mats and even musical instruments for the pep band. “In the past 10 years, The La Salle Club has made tremendous improvements to the student-athlete experience,” says Barnes. “Their generosity has helped make it possible for us to rebuild the Ron Limeberger ’53 Gymnasium following the roof collapse in 2004. We renovated the men’s baseball field and the football field, built a field house and an athletic training room, purchased and installed baseball and softball scoreboards, relocated and

at 29th Annual Dinner expanded our weight room, added bleachers to the field house, fenced in the baseball field and opened the Victor and Phela Vesci Strength and Fitness Center. If you look at all of these projects, you will find the contributions and dedication of the fine men and women of The La Salle Club.”
“It is an honor to receive the Ambassadors of the Year Award,” says longtime La Salle Club member and volunteer, Jim Westlake ’51. “I believe this award really belongs to the many volunteers and members who, over the course of the past 74 years, generously gave of their time and resources to support the students of Christian Brothers High School.” “I’m really proud that we were invited to help revitalize The La Salle Club,” says Sal “Chado” Vasquez ’52, the La Salle Club’s longest tenured president – 14 years. “We had a lot of fun and we were able to contribute to both the boys’ and girls’ athletic programs.” “Jimmy (Westlake ’51) said it really well,” says Bernie Church ’62, president, The La Salle Club. “This award really belongs to the people who came before us, we just happen to be here to accept it. The real work was done by the people who persevered during much more dire times and circumstances. I’m proud to accept this on their behalf.”

The Ambassadors Club was formed in 1984 to recognize and honor members of the Christian Brothers family who support the school financially. The gift level is $1,876 or more, which coincides with the founding year of the school. Gifts at this level, and all gifts, contribute greatly toward providing a quality, Catholic, Lasallian education to the deserving young men and women of Christian Brothers High School. “The members of the The La Salle Club are passionate and vocal advocates of the school, our student-athletes and Catholic education,” says Barnes. “They are respected and beloved in the community. On behalf of all of the students they have helped, and continue to help, I am thrilled to present them this year with the Ambassadors of the Year Award.”

The La Salle Club celebrated its 59th annual Baseball Hall of Fame inductees with a fantastic night of renewed friendships, relived memories and reveling in the rich history of Sacramento baseball. The event, held on April 27, in the CB field house, welcomed nine new members into the Hall of Fame including former high school pitchers Butch Metzger (Kennedy) and Fernando Arroyo (Burbank) who competed against each other in the old Metro League before embarking on major-league careers, former Grant High and Japan League star Leon Lee, former Bishop Armstrong star and Christian Brothers coach Joe Gill ’63, Tom Dicktakes (Sacramento High), Mike Green ’62 (Bishop Armstrong), Gene Sackett (McClatchy), Gary Szakacs (Mira Loma) and former Sacramento Bee staff writer Nick Peters, who covered the San Francisco Giants for 47 years. Honorees are selected based on a number of factors including age (60 years or older), success as a player, manager, scout, umpire or writer, and a connection to the region. The La Salle Club was established in 1937 to raise money for sports teams and equipment at the school. That tradition continues today as proceeds from the dinner benefit CB’s athletic programs. Mark your calendars for the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame dinner scheduled on Saturday evening, February 15, 2014!

Christian Brothers Connection
Brother Bertram Society The Brother Bertram Society was founded in 1994 to honor Brother Bertram Coleman, FSC. The society includes persons and couples who have made provisions for Christian Brothers High School in their estate plans. In his 70 years of service to the District of San Francisco, Br. Bertram served as a teacher, high school prefect, vice principal, athletic director and coach, director of student Brothers at St. Mary’s College, principal of Christian Brothers and Cathedral high schools, Brother Visitor, development director, alumni director, Director General of Mt. La Salle and district archivist. He was a passionate advocate of Lasallian education and ardently committed to educating the poor. The Brother Bertram Society speaks to the importance of estate planning to the future of Christian Brothers High School. If you have included CBHS in your estate plans, or if you would like information about the Brother Bertram Society, please contact Nancy Smith-Fagan, director of advancement, at 916-733-3608.
Christian Brothers High School Mourns Passing of Mrs. Helen Montgomery August 24, 1934 – April 28, 2013 Helen Montgomery was a busy woman. She, and her husband, Norman, were married for 54 years, ran a successful business (Montgomery Contractors, Inc.) and raised six children in a large and loving family. Helen was an active member of the Holy Spirit Parish where she served on the Altar Society and the school’s PTA. Her sons attended Christian Brothers and Norman himself was named an honorary alumnus in 1981 and Ambassador of the Year in 1991. Helen, through the years, was an avid volunteer and generous supporter of the school, even serving on the Christian Brothers High School Board of Regents. With her passing, Helen leaves behind her children, Stephen ’73 (Mary), Tom ’74 (Brenda), Cathy ’76 (Keith), Anne ’78 (Greg), Br. John Montgomery, FSC ’81, daughter, Mary, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Through her participation in the Brother Bertram Society, her legacy of dedication and generosity will continue through a bequest that directed funds to the construction of the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center and the Br. John Montgomery Endowed Scholarship Fund. “Helen Montgomery was a woman of tremendous faith and steadfast dedication,” says CB President Lorcan Barnes. “Her deep commitment to Lasallian education will continue to bless our students who rely on tuition assistance and our young men and women as they develop and showcase their talents in the new theatre and performing arts classrooms. We are grateful for Helen’s generosity. She will be deeply missed.”
Joe Sobel - Semper Fi By Dr. Pat Melarkey ’49 As a graduate of Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, California, Class of 1949, I tend to stay in close contact with many of my former classmates. A number of us get together monthly for breakfast at a local diner and discuss our lives, our business interests and our fellow Brothers alumni (Brothers Boys). So, when I saw an obituary in the Sacramento Bee announcing the funeral of a Brothers Boy named Joe Sobel, I made it a point to attend the service, held at Reichert’s Funeral Home in Orangevale. Unlike my relationships with other classmates, I had lost close contact with Joe during the intervening years between high school and now. We were in different classes; I was in Class of ’49 while Joe was in Class of’52. But we had also known one another as kids, living in the same general area of Sacramento. I live on 25th and U Streets (where I still reside), while Joe was three blocks away at 28th and Q Streets, next to the Vartanian family, including brothers Peter ’50 and Sam ’51. We all knew one another from our neighborhood games.
against stuttering individuals and it was rare that they had a chance to move up the social ladder. There are exceptions to this rule that usually involve people who have financial opportunities in life, who can receive treatment. Joe, of course, didn’t receive any treatments for his problem so he suffered in silence like most people with his condition. When I arrived at the funeral at the Witchard Funeral Home on that hot July day, I was not surprised to find a large crowd already assembled for the service. There were 60 or 70 of us crowded into a small chapel including a handful of Christian Brothers boys, some of them, his classmates. Outside the chapel was another crowd of attendees – approximately the same number – as were inside. This group was composed of veteran motorcycle riders, Joe’s family in his later years, his third such family altogether after his blood kin family and his second family of fellow Marines.
regarding the death of the indigent, like Mr. Sobel. The coroner first performs a search for next-of-kin and then if they can’t find any, they come to us. There was a serious hitch that developed in the case of Joe Sobel,” Turner explained to the reporter. “There is only me and one other deputy and our supervisor in our office. The delay was primarily due to the fact that the people at the nursing facility didn’t follow the proper procedure in dealing with an unclaimed body. We were very distressed by this and there is an investigation underway into how this occurred. Hopefully, there will be a remedy so a situation like this never happens again.”
Care of the poor and distressed, especially veterans, has been a careerlong concern of mine and I regret that I didn’t keep as close a watch on Joe I sat there is in the chapel as did some of my more successful remembering Joe and wishing I had colleagues. Poor Joe didn’t deserve maintained closer contact with him over the humiliating fate he suffered in the past sixty years. The most curious Joe was a good athlete, wasn’t death, but, at least his true friends and thing about Joe Sobel’s funeral was the gifted, but he was okay. He wasn’t a Brothers were there in Orangevale to amount of time that had transpired great student either and some of his see him off and remember him. difficulties stemmed from his disability. between his death at a nursing home No American should suffer this on October 21, 2012 and his funeral Joe suffered from what was referred to indignity, especially veterans. Extravaganza A Party with a Purpose The CB Alumni Association set out to make the 26th annual Wine, Beer & Food Extravaganza a party with a purpose. The purpose, raising money for tuition assistance. The party, the most successful in event history. More than 1,800 alumni, family and friends attended the fun-filled event on Friday, September 6, which featured offerings from dozens of wineries, breweries, and restaurants. After nearly a year of planning and hard work, the festivities generated a phenomenal $112,000. The event began with the Private Reserve Tasting which featured exclusive wines and a variety of cheeses and hors d'oeuvres. Nearly 200 wine aficionados and friends gathered in the field house to enjoy this festive precursor to the extravaganza. Wineries and restaurants filled the main lawn, while the breweries and additional restaurants spread out across the interior lawn. New this year, a champagne lounge, where patrons could enjoy delectable desserts with their bubbly. Back by popular demand, the cigar lounge where patrons could enjoy a taste of whiskey as they smoked. A special thank you to the Classes of 1968, 1979, 1983, 1992 and 1997 that also organized food tables which were located throughout the event. “I am so grateful for the generosity of our sponsors, and the many wineries, breweries, restaurants and classes who made this event possible,” says CB President, Lorcan Barnes. “Over the course of the last year, event chair, Matthew Ruggiero ’00, Nancy Smith-Fagan, assistant director of advancement, and the entire Alumni Association Board of Directors looked for ways to make an already wonderful event even better. They definitely succeeded, particularly when you consider how the event continues to benefit our students who rely on tuition assistance.” A special thank you to event chair, Matthew Ruggiero ’00, and the entire Alumni Association Board for their time, dedication and hard work in making this a fantastic evening to remember. Thanks, also, to Neumann Enterprises and Uber for their assistance in making sure that attendees had safe rides home. Next year’s event is scheduled for Friday, September 5, 2014.
