Yes, Springtime is here! I
Written by Meagan Taylor
n the book of Song of Solomon chapter two, verses 10 to 13, it says: “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For the winter is past, [it’s] over and gone. The flowers are springing up and the time of the singing of the birds has come. Yes, spring is here! The leaves are coming out and the grape vines are in blossom. How delicious they smell! Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.” Yes! The beautiful flowers are blooming and the trees are turning green! The days don’t seem to be as short and the nights are warming up. I adore the springtime because I am able to plant and tend to my little garden at home with my toddler… but what does this mean spiritually? One of the things that comes to mind is that of the ploughing during springtime. For seeding to take place, the ground needs to be ploughed open. The Lord’s call through His prophet was: “Plough up the fallow ground” for “My people have rebellious hearts; they have turned against Me, and gone off into idolatry. Though I AM the One who gives them … spring (and) harvest (they show no) fear for Me. And so I have taken away these wondrous blessings from them. (Their) sin has robbed them of all these good things” (cf., Jeremiah 5:23,24). If you have rebellion, hate, lust or greed in your life: let God’s springtime ploughing break up your fallow ground.
| 8
William Shakespeare also says, “Now ’tis the spring and weeds are shallow rooted; suffer them now and they’ll overgrow the garden.” Therefore, it’s a time of newness whereby if you confess your sins as Moses wrote “carefully obey all of His commandments (and) love the Lord your God with all your hearts and souls, and will worship Him, then He will … send … spring rains that will produce wonderful crops … and you yourselves shall have plenty” (Deut. 11:13, 14). Spring is a time for us to look at the weeds in our hearts. The weeds that have crept in over the long winter season – a season could be years or it could be just a few weeks. If you are yearning for a spiritual freedom in your life – a spiritual springtime - then I urge you, friends of CBN, to pray from your heart to Jesus Christ, “God be merciful to me a sinner, and receive me, Lord Jesus Christ, now and forever!” And yours will be a spiritual springtime! We continue to pray for you as you faithfully sow into the ministry. I pray that spring will bring forth a newness of Christ within you. May you draw closer to Him than ever before. May you feel His comfort and may He grant you a peace that surpasses all understanding. As the season changes may you feel the warm sunshine on your skin and remember his warmth and goodness in your life. Thank you again for sowing so faithfully into the lives of others through CBN. God bless you!
Yes, spring is here! [...] Arise , my love, my fair one, and come away. - Song of Solomon 2:10-13
How do we become good neighbours in South Africa?
A
fter the massive political campaigns that came with it being voting year, the wounds of our country were once again exposed to those paying attention. I sat back and watched as people attacked one another, rallied against their neighbours and turned a blind eye as injustice was being handed out all round. It wasn’t all bad, but the simple truth is… We often don’t know how to treat our neighbours who are different to us with love and respect. It’s important for us to take a moment and reflect back on not just the state of our hearts, but also the state of our communities. We have come a long way since the abolishment of Apartheid in 1994. Yet, somehow, we’re still stuck in the past. We still find ourselves inheriting the ideologies and outlooks of those who grew up amidst the burden of Apartheid. In light of this I’d like to propose that we take a step back, zoom out and take a look at our communities and ask how do we become good neighbours to those around us?

The race card We’re all too familiar with the race argument. Racial issues run deep in South Africa and the brokenness and fruits thereof are still rife in our country. Instead of getting in too deep with the discourse of institutional racism, there’s one truth we, as Christian’s, should be focussing on amidst all of this: So God created mankind in his own image... – Genesis 1:27 For we are God’s handiwork... – Ephesians 2:10 Essentially we are all created in God’s image. All humans have dignity because we’re made in the image of God. To further this, all humans despite race are 99.9% the same genetically. The colour of our skin is essentially less than 0.1% of our genetic makeup and it’s merely a survival mechanism to either survive the harshness of sunlight, or absorb more Vitamin D. SA's Raging Need for Disaster Relief
I
t’s an absolute disaster. How many of us have said these words, or something similar about a situation, event, or an occurrence. I know I have. Often, it really wasn’t as bad as I made it out to seem. The word ‘disaster’ is defined as; “a sudden accident or natural catastrophe that causes great damage or loss of life.” This has been a theme for our office over the last few months. In fact, towards the end of August I attended an Emergency Response workshop with the City of Cape Town. Thankfully the City of Cape Town has an internationally recognized emergency response procedure and plan. But this is not the case for most of Southern Africa and South Africa, in fact even though Cape Town has such an amazing team, the need is still great. We are more and more beginning to recognize the need for the church to respond to disasters in our region. Recently a collection of individuals from different churches and denominations have begun to meet to ask the question “How can we as the greater body

respond to disasters in our areas, and to do so in a way which demonstrates the love of Jesus?” The city has welcomed this desire to serve because the reality is that we do have limited resources. As far as disasters go, we have all heard about ones like the drought, flooding, earthquakes, storms and fires. Without a doubt the most common disaster affecting South African’s are fires. And more often than not it affects our poorest communities. Each year numerous fires rip through informal settlements wiping out many families entire earthly possessions, and it usually occurs during winter. This is unfortunately a reality in our city. Due to lack of free land, many people who come to the Cape, or other cities looking for work, need to erect homes on already crowded land. Secondly, due to the informal nature of these settlements’, electricity is not always available so many make use of kerosene lamps and stoves to cook, warm and light up their dwelling. Those who do have access to electricity need to connect to already overloaded
distribution boxes. Lastly, walls and roofs are lined with wooden or cardboard panels to asset with insulation during the cold months, and due to lack of space, cupboards and make-shift shelves are made of wood. All of this comes together to create an extremely high-risk fire disaster. All it takes is an overloaded electricity socket, or a kerosene lamp falling over, and after that you have a total of 60 seconds before the whole dwelling is completely engulfed. A disaster waiting to happen? In many regards yes, this statement is correct. But the city, as well as other organisations, have made some remarkable proactive strides in combating shack fires. Some of the initiatives have been the supply of fireretardant paint for the outside and inside of shacks, smoke detectors as an early warning system, and fire extinguishers. But these unfortunately come at a high cost. Some reactive measures have been the supply of building materials to build new homes, and food stamps for a period of time. This is usually where

the church comes in, with the supply of some basic essentials to help people rebuild their lives. It would include: clothes, blankets, mattresses, toiletries, food, basic school items for children and other items. A few months ago, a fire ripped through Masiphumelele in Cape Town and consumed the homes of over 1000 people. CBN responded to the disaster with blankets, clothes and food, and we were on the scene. We wish to become better equipped to respond to these sorts of disasters which are common in our country, but we do need your assistance. We would like to invite you to prayerfully consider giving to our Disaster Fund. 100% of your donation will go towards those in need. The good news is that we are a resilient people, and a hopeful people, and these crises create an opportunity for us to enter in with Christ. Jesus said that if we give even a glass of water to one of the least of his followers, we will surely not lose our reward. May these opportunities not pass us by.

rphan's Promise SA in collaboration with Lamb International has established an Africa Consortium by which we are working together to strengthen our partners through capacity-building. One of these areas is toward traumainformed care. We collaborated with Lamb International, Life Child and Life Church (Cape Town) to present our first trauma training. Attendees from Life Child, Life Church, CBN, OP, other NPO’s, and individuals attended - individuals varied from teachers, parents, caretakers, pastors, teachers, and students. Ruby and Lynn Johnston from Lamb International, covered Module 1 of trauma-informed care and 43 people participated in the training after which each excitedly received an attendance certificate. The training was presented with a wonderful practical twist and this vibrant bunch of adults had lots of fun during some of the sessions. The training focussed on the following: • Understanding the goal of effective

child well-being • Understanding the essential skills of trauma-informed care • Understanding the lifetime potential and lifetime impact of trauma and development • Recognising how child traumatic stress is exacerbated by an ongoing stressor in a child’s life • Identify coping responses, strengths and protective factors that promote positive adjustment among traumatized children • Identifying new strategies, techniques and skills to manage children with a traumatic history. The feedback was encouragingly positive and some attendees enquired as to when Module 2 will be presented. They appreciated the practical approach, real life applications and many found ways to face their own traumas and work towards personal growth . We are currently planning our next training in Botswana and look forward to another fruitful and valuable training session.

melia is in Grade 7 and lives with her aging grandparents in a private house at Dayspring in Magaliesburg. Her grandfather is a Sangoma that deals with herbs for healing but also contacts the dead on behalf of people. Her mother moves from job to job and we often don’t know what she is up to. Amelia is a very bright girl and loves to read. She is a serious student and always does her best. Her sister, Angelina, was the first one in her family to graduate from high school last year and we are certain that God’s plans for her life will include university. She often gets frustrated with her mom as her mom will promise a lot of things but then always has an excuse as to why she doesn’t fulfil the promise. Sometimes her mom just doesn’t even give an excuse or explanation. We continue to encourage Amelia to honor her mom and show her Jesus’ love and grace despite her behaviour. It is not always easy for her but we have watched her grow into a lovely young lady over the years.

It’s time to think outside the box and ‘go’! I have a sense that the Lord is preparing and equipping adults to facilitate the gifts that are surfacing in the lives of this generation of children. We are reminded to stir and nurture their gifts so that they can live within the freedom that Christ has given them. Our time together had truly been a fruitful one. From the time we entered until we were commissioned to go out. We left understanding what it means to stand in unity with one voice. “Stand united, singular in vision, contending for people’s trust in the Message, the good news, not flinching or dodging in the slightest before the opposition. Your courage and unity will show them what they’re up against: defeat them, victory for you- and both because of God”. Phil 1:27-28 In August we were privileged to attend the “The Trauma Informed
Care Training” presented by Lamb International in partnership with Orphan’s Promise Southern Africa at Life Church in Sea Point (group picture on bottom left). It’s evident that the Lord is restoring His children so that we can impact the Kingdom. I am repeatedly reminded of the importance of self-care before taking care of the children that we influence. The training highlighted a lot and helped us to understand the impact that trauma has on children. Our responsibility as adults is to create a safe environment to protect the children in our care. These two-events reminded me of the importance of staying connected to the vine and the importance of being deeply rooted in Christ so that we can bear much fruit- fruit that will last! Jesus reminds us in Mathew 18:5 “And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” Whenever things get busy, we constantly remind ourselves that children are our futures, and so beloved by God! Pray with us as we walk in this daily.

When we recognise God in them, how can we turn away and not treat them with dignity and love? - Robyn Tichauer, page 10
Q&A Q with Pat
Why do you think God has allowed Satan to exist, and why did he not destroy him years ago?
A
Pat Robertson Founder of The Christian Broadcasting Network Do you have a question for Pat? Log on to cbn.com/ bringitonline and follow the instructions to submit your questions.
I strongly believe that God wanted to show that love is the most powerful force in the universe - His love. If our heavenly Father destroyed Satan, then it would have sent a message to the angels, the principalities and powers, and every living being that power is what rules the universe. But our God in heaven did not do that. Instead, He sent His only beloved Son - His precious Son Jesus - to give up His own life and die. And that particular death showed that love had conquered all. When Jesus painfully hung on that cross and said: "It is fininshed," He didn't say: "I am finished." No. He meant that the mission was finished. And Satan had lost.
