Our Message Dear CBN Partner,
John Newton.
I trust that whatever you are feeling right now, you will be stirred and encouraged as you read this edition of Arise – a small mosaic of thoughts, stories and testimonies which, seen together, reflects our team’s heart and ministry at this time.
A selfish, ungodly sailor and cruel slave-trader, Newton found himself crying out to God for mercy one night as he clung on to the sinking remains of his severely storm-damaged ship in the Northern Atlantic. His life was spared. But besides experiencing God’s mercy that night, he also tasted the unexpected sweetness of Amazing Grace as he bowed to Jesus as Lord and Saviour for the first time.
Rather suddenly, we all find ourselves in the middle of one of the biggest global crises in modern history. As I write this, I wonder how this tectonic disturbance to ‘normal life’ has “How precious did that grace affected you? I’m guessing that appear for many of you, things are very the hour I first believed!” difficult right now. He was changed forever. Even in Our theme for May and June his 80’s, shortly before he died, (planned long before the start Newton remained amazed by of the Covid-19 pandemic) is God’s grace: “My memory is nearly Grace. Amazing Grace. Some of gone; but I remember two things: you might have watched Andrea That I am a great sinner, and that Bocelli singing the famous hymn Christ is a great Saviour.” live to the world from Milan last month, on Easter Sunday. As Mercy is not getting what we do this moving production flashed deserve. Based on his life up to real-time aerial views from the that point, Newton deserved to hauntingly empty streets of die that night, but God spared him. cities across the world (including That’s mercy. unconditional love, royal identity, freedom, authority and eternity. That’s grace! Philip Yancey put it like this: “Grace teaches us that God loves because of who God is, not because of who we are.” Like Newton on that stormtossed sea, our nation and our families certainly need to cry out for mercy at this time of great suffering. And we know (and have already seen) that God is able to miraculously spare South Africa if we humble ourselves and call out to Him. But then - may our nation also be surprised and forever changed by the power

of His amazing grace during this unique time in history! I believe this is mainly going to happen as we, His children already living in grace, carry it and demonstrate it daily in our hearts, words and actions. And His grace is enough! No matter what you feel like and what you have or haven’t done. It’s enough for you – and it’s enough for those you are called to be Jesus to during this storm.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Cor 12:9 Ian Walton | Regional Director

Facing the Future without Fear W ritten
by
G ordon R obert s on
You serve a Mighty God
The Bible says:
Anxiety and worry are some of the most destructive forces we can face. They sap our strength and slowly undermine our faith.
“Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6 NKJV).
When we face a crisis and experience fear, it’s usually because we are choosing to rely upon ourselves rather than upon God and His Word. Maybe we have forgotten that no problem, including a global pandemic, is too big for God. Or perhaps we forget that we can call on the Lord in every situation. Whether the current uncertainties in the world have us concerned about health, finances or the future, we can always lean on Him and His word. Turn on the news and you will find a reason to feel anxious. Each day brings a new opportunity for fears, but it also brings us an opportunity to cast our cares upon Him. One of the best ways we can do this is by replacing our worry and tension with prayer and thanksgiving.
This command is followed by a wonderful promise: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7 NKJV). Start today – whenever you feel anxious, begin to pray. List five things that you are thankful for right now, then tell God what is making you afraid and what you need. You will see God’s peace transform your heart and mind. God has not changed. Today, He continues to tell His People: “I will be with you. … Be strong and courageous!” (Joshua 1:5,9 NKJV).

What have you been doing with your time? On multiple occasions, as a result of video calling with friends, this question stayed with me long after the call ended. Naturally, the topic of conversation was largely centred on the current pandemic. And it always leads to how we’re keeping ourselves busy. Like many people, I went into this time with good intentions to get stuff done and learn more. But somehow… Days have disappeared and I’m nowhere near to completing my to-do list. Across the world, people have been hard-hit by this pandemic. The consequences therefore look different for different people. Some struggle with fulfilling their basic needs of food and sanitation, some need to deal with a salary cut or retrenchment, some are full-time home-schooling parents and fulltime employees, some are fighting internal mental battles and too many are severely ill from the virus. Amidst one of the biggest struggles we’ve yet encountered, we’re isolated and our normal routines have had to be redone.

Lessons Learnt from the Rekabites W ritten
by
Deep within the scriptures, almost hidden within the book of Jeremiah is a single chapter, indeed the only chapter, dedicated to the humble Rekabite Clan. These people were not Israelites, but descendants of the ancient Kenite tribe who lived close to Canaan. One might ask the question, why did the Lord see fit to set apart a chapter in Jeremiah about them? Perhaps a lesson can be learnt from this simple clan. At a time when the Israelites were in a terrible state before the Lord, worshiping every idol and foreign god under the sun, Jeremiah and many other prophets had been sent numerous times to try encourage them away from these idols, as well as to point out Israel’s blatant sin. During this period, the Lord told Jeremiah to invite the Rekabites over for a casual drink, and to intentionally treat them to some wine. The Rekabites accepted Jeremiah’s invitation. The whole family arrived, and they were delighted to be Jeremiah’s guests. Jeremiah welcomed them and then proceeded to bring out some wine 09

for them to drink. But as Jeremiah began to pour the chalices, the head of the family spoke up and said, “we do not drink wine”. He continued, “Our forefather Jehonadab son of Rekab gave us this command, ‘Neither you nor your descendants must ever drink wine. Also, you must never build houses, sow seed or plant vineyards; you must never have any of these things but must always live in tents. Then you will live a long time in the land where you are nomads.’” The family head went on to say, “We have obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab son of Rekab commanded us. Neither we nor our wives nor our sons nor our daughters have ever drunk wine or built houses to live in or had vineyards, fields, or crops. We have lived in tents and have fully obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab commanded us.” (Jeremiah 35:6-10) From the above we can see that the Rekabites were clearly a people who did not conform to the pattern of the world. We do not know why Jehonadab gave his descendants these commands, but we do see
some beautiful parallels between stare death in the face, what good our new life in Christ and the are the properties accumulated, or commands of Jehonadab. the vineyards cultivated. IAs Partnerships Manager, I want to let each of you know how CBN SA is responding to these challenging times. Every decision we make is being guided by our long-standing commitment to share the love of Jesus with those in need. That is still the center of our work!
TEAM CBN SA
We are taking care of our committed staff and volunteers here at CBN SA – without them the mission comes to a standstill. We are prioritising their safety and productivity during this extended time of lockdown. We have been successfully collaborating Here is how we are responding so and meeting remotely since the far: week before lockdown began. We have, however, now also obtained

a special government permit which enables us to move around for specific ministry-related missions. COMMUNITY IMPACT We are committed to thinking long term about our mission, which proclaims and demonstrates the love and grace of God, strategically working through international partnerships, towards a time in history when “the knowledge of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea”. Through our Orphans Promise ministry our emergency safety houses and programs continue to take in and take care of vulnerable children. Food parcels were handed out to sustain them and their families during the lockdown period. As part of our Covid-19 disaster program, CBN SA is helping to provide meals and ministry to the homeless at a large camp in Cape Town where a few thousand people are currently being forced to live. Superbook has taken its mission widely online by providing and equipping parents with tools and encouragement to spiritually nourish and entertain their kids at home. You can read more about some of the work that is underway elsewhere in this edition of Arise.
BEING A GREAT PARTNER Right now, the measures taken to stop the spread of Covid-19 have had little effect on our ability to carry out our mission – spreading the life-altering Good News of Jesus Christ as well as providing practical, sustainable, loving support to those most in need. We will continue to come up with innovative ways to work diligently during this time. Though we do not know what the coming hours, days and weeks may hold we do know that your support powers what we do and has kept us going in the face of a growing pandemic. With you at our side, we are able to keep proclaiming the gospel in multiple ways while growing our presence ‘on the ground’ as part of the wider Church that is the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. I write this with sincere gratitude, may you be blessed greatly! If you have any questions about our involvement with Covid-19 Relief or how to get involved, please feel free to contact me. I’ll be more than happy to chat to you! Email me on: meagan.taylor@cbnsa.org

A Testimony from Zodwa Luthuli Zodwa is Bandile Ntinga’s grandmother, who attends Nation Changers’ Isambulo College. Sadly, Bandile (6 years old) was deserted by his mother after his father passed away. She didn’t leave any of his important documents such as his birth certificate or immunisation card. Consequently, although Zodwa is his sole provider, she’s unable to claim a child support grant for him. Despite being the only person who has work in the extended family of seven, she is diligently parenting Bandile and has forged a good relationship with his teachers at the college. She’s employed two days a week as a domestic worker in an 13

area approximately 40 kilometres away, resulting in her travel costs absorbing a large percentage of her R1 200 per month income. At the age of 59 years, she doesn’t qualify for an old age pension yet. The Covid-19 virus lockdown has made it a lot more difficult for this extended family of seven to survive. Zodwa can’t go to her part-time job and isn’t receiving an income. Thanks to your partnership, she was overjoyed to receive a Nation Changers Care Kit and with tears in her eyes, tried to express her gratitude saying that she didn’t have the words to thank us sufficiently. She asked us to please continue changing lives as we were having a great impact on their community. Bandile was delighted with the food and hygiene products too - he literally jumped for joy!
A Testimony from Ntombingani Ndimande Ntombingani is the maternal grandmother of Thenjiwe Ndimande who is in Grade RR at Isambulo College. Granny Ntombingani cannot claim a child support grant for Thenjiwe as she has no birth certificate and the social worker hasn’t been able to help the family acquire one for her yet. She has never met her father and he’s never taken responsibility for her. Granny Ntombingani has no government grant either and lives in the family home with five dependents. At the time of lockdown, an additional five children belonging to an aunt moved in with them, as the aunt was aggressive and abusive. This brings her current number of dependents to ten. Thenjiwe’s mother earns R800 per month doing part-time domestic work but is currently not bringing in any income as she can’t be at work during the pandemic.
help by offering to do washing and vegetable gardening for neighbours and begging for food from them. When given a Nation Changers Care Kit through Isambulo College, Ntombingani gasped and giggled, she was utterly amazed that people she’d never met were giving her family the food they so desperately need. She couldn’t stop thanking us! It’s wonderful that Nehneh, Isambulo College founder, and the other Isambulo staff have been given the opportunity to bless the most destitute in their community with Care Kits. Today, 100 more Nation Changers Meal Packs, bread, fresh chicken pieces and sanitizers were given to these ladies and others in the community. Without funding from CBN/OP this would not be possible!
The extended family is under enormous pressure and Granny Ntombingani is doing her best to Ntombingani posing for a photo after receiving her Naton Changers Care Kit.

You are Helping Children Through this Crisis W ritten
by
Y olanda M agida
Dropping off Superbook packs and praying for our Westlake club in Cape Town.
This global pandemic has, in many instances, amplified already negative situations. Violence against women and children has been on the increase since lockdown started. People of different backgrounds and demographics are experiencing trauma in different ways, but we particularly want to focus on children in vulnerable communities. 15
We believe that strengthening children’s voices and spiritual muscles is even more critical during this period. We are looking into intensifying our efforts in assisting children in vulnerable communities across the Western Cape. Communities where access to resources and media is limited, if available at all. Where isolation and hunger during lockdown is more of a threat than Covid-19 itself. Together with other partner organisations, we are putting together food parcels, arts and crafts and Superbook activities that children can utilise. Our mission is to minimise feelings of helplessness and isolation, and rather replace it with feelings of hope. To open a channel of communication accessible to more children, we are launching community campaigns where we are encouraging children to write a letter to Gizmo. Giving them an opportunity to express how they feel about the lockdown and to send a prayer request if they want to. We are working with schools and our community partners to implement these campaigns and with the collection of the letters for Gizmo. We are looking to implement a post-lockdown plan where we can help children debrief and navigate their new normal with solid hope and confidence that God has a plan for them for their futures! We would like to encourage you, as our precious partner, to keep giving in this season! The actions and steps we take now will shape the future of our nation’s next generation. 16

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

To all the nurses and doctors on the frontline, amidst the chaos… To all the parents at home, trying to cope while home-schooling for the first time, while parenting in confined spaces… I am with you. To those who have changed your dining room table to your boardroom table… To the dad who just lost his job, unable to pay his bills… I am with you. To the daughter trying to provide for her entire family… To the parent who has gone through the devastation of losing a child… I am with you. To the children without the love and nurturing they need… To those separated from loved ones… I am with you. To the student trying to graduate… To the business owner unable to pay salaries… I am with you. To the government officials leading the nation… To the family locked down in a shack with no water… I am with you. Know this, there will be times of suffering in your life. But the temporary suffering of this life does not compare to the glory that shall be revealed in you. Know that I am with you and I will help you. Your help comes from me, I will never leave you, I will never reject you. Nothing can ever separate you from my love for you. When you are in trouble and distress, my love is with you. When you are persecuted, my love is with you. When you are hungry, cold and naked, my love is with you. When you are in danger and threatened by death, my love is with you.
I am always with you and I will be with you forever. But now, I the LORD, who created you and formed you, says: Do not be afraid, for I have purchased you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. I command you to be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid; do not be dismayed, for I, the LORD your God will be with you everywhere you go. 18
We Want to Pray with You!
The Bible teaches us the importance of prayer. We are called to pray for each other just as it says in Ephesians 6:18:
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” (NIV) Whatever your prayer request is - let’s pray about it together! We would love to pray with you, whether you need breakthrough, encouragement or just someone to chat to. We are here for you!

Q A
Q&A with Pat Robertson What is happening in the world today with Bible prophecy?
The Apostle Paul said, “This day won’t take you unaware.” It will come like birth pangs. Jesus said there were going to be earthquakes in various places, famines, plagues, wars, and rumours of wars. Then, He said, “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). I think we’re very close to fulfilling that. He also said Jerusalem will be trodden under the foot of the Gentiles until such time as the time of the Gentiles are fulfilled. Well, in the Six-Day War, the Israelis took control of Jerusalem for the first time. So, all these prophecies have been lining up one by one. Will it be tomorrow, next year, or five years from now? Nobody knows. It’s in the Father’s plan when He’s going to come back. But we can see that it’s getting closer.
