Humanity - the good, the bad and the ugly
The events of 2020 have provided a stark reminder of our vulnerability as humans, as well as the fragility of the things of this world. And unlike most major calamities, these have not only affected the poor and weak. Powerful people, systems and businesses have been toppled in the wake of this virus and subsequent economic crisis. No matter what people believe, very few people need more convincing that this world, including themselves, is broken and struggling. Religion offers very little comfort to this besides maybe a feelgood factor and a vague hope that the afterlife might be better. Religion requires our ‘goodness’ and offers forgiveness and reward in return. Religion asks 03
us to strive to become more like God so that we can be accepted by Him. But how does religion help when we’re feeling powerless, demotivated and crippled by difficulty, illness or despair? “Come to me…” says Jesus. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Unlike human piety and religion, His Good News meets us wherever we are and only requires our faith and obedience as we begin walking the road to Life with Him. This week I reread the strange account of Zacchaeus who climbed a tree to see Jesus over the crowds. You’ll remember that this guy was not someone you would want to be friends with, or to have as a neighbour. He was a
corrupt and greedy tax official, despised as an immoral sell-out. Yet… he was favoured by our Lord. “Zacchaeus, I’m coming to visit your house today.” Really? Of all the good people in Jericho, Jesus picks this nasty, sinful man to honour! And so off they go, while all the bystanders gossip and judge and shake their heads. But inside his ungodly household that day, the presence and grace of Jesus changes Zacchaeus and his family forever! Once again, God’s unbelievable kindness leads to unbelievable repentance, as it so often does. A complete turnaround story with very obvious, visible ramifications Zacchaeus gives half of all that he owns to the poor, and vows to repay all those he cheated with four times what he made off them! “Today, salvation has come to this house…” Yes, religion favours and honours the good, respectable people - but Jesus doesn’t. He favours and honours all people. Do we? Our theme for September and October is “Humanity”. Humanity in all its shapes, colours, cultures and forms. The good, the bad and the ugly. Humanity, the object of His missional focus and sacrificial, unconditional love.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…” Here in 2020 we are all missioncarriers alongside Jesus within a disrupted, chaotic, despairing society. Like Zacchaeus, ‘sinners’ around us are climbing all kinds of figurative trees just to get a glimpse of truth or a glimmer of hope. They need someone to really see them, to reach out to them, and to show them unusual kindness despite who they are, what they look like or what they do. They need the presence and grace of Jesus to visit with them - the same presence and grace we have dwelling inside of each of us! What a challenge to our religious selves who, instead of reaching out, would much rather join the crowd, pointing fingers and shaking heads at those in the trees. Each one of us gets to become His life-changing hands, feet and voice to the humanity all around us – if we can be brave enough to follow His unconventional example and submit to His daily leading. Whose salvation story are we going to be part of this year? - Ian
If you’d like to get involved in being His hands and feet, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. 04

Without this kindness and value of humanity, so many of our neighbours would be lost and would never feel the loving kindness of community, as God created it. Thanks to you, we’re able to extend kindness and humanity to people acrosss South Africa, and beyond.

A Prayer for Our Children W r i tt e n
by
Gordon Robertson
As children prepare to go back to school during these unprecedented times, Gordon Robertson invites you to join him in praying this prayer for the next generation.
Your power. Grant them secure and peaceful marriages, filled with love and honour, so that the generations that follow would walk before You, and live in the awe of Your presence.
Our heavenly Father, You commanded us to be fruitful and multiply. You commanded us to teach Your commandments to our children. You did this so the world would be replenished and that our children would turn to You.
We know that just one prayer can last for a thousand generations, and so, we ask for this generation to know You. Forgive us our debts and be our salvation, for without You we perish. We turn to You and Your righteousness. May the Redeemer come to us and our children, and buy back those who have turned from their sins. Establish Your new covenant with us. May Your Spirit never leave us. May Your Word never leave us. May Your Word be on our lips and on the lips of our children and our children’s children forever.
You summon each new generation since the beginning, and so we ask that You summon this generation. We ask that You open their eyes to see Your works, open their ears to hear Your words, and give them a heart of understanding so that they Amen. would know the greatness of

Companionship is God’s Heartbeat for Mankind
W r i tt e n From the beginning of time, God prioritised companionship for every living thing He created. Every creature had another of its kind to cohabit with. In addition, the law of multiplication was in place to ensure that they multiply, increase in number and form colonies where they can stay together and enjoy each other’s company. But for man - Adam…….?

The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.””
This scripture has often been used to emphasise the marriage union of a man and a woman, and rightly so. However, in this article I want to use it to highlight God’s ability to see our Let’s read Genesis 2:18-23 (NIV): needs and create what we need for The Lord God said, “It is not good for our benefit. the man to be alone. God’s Goodness in 2020 W r i tt e n
I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since we saw many of you at the 2019 partner events. Who knew back then how 2020 would turn out. All I can say is that GOD IS STILL IN CONTROL! How am I so sure about this? It’s because of people like you. So many people have been torn down, broken and left hopeless this year for numerous reasons. The mother that didn’t have food for her children, the jobless father that’s trying to support his family, the grandparents that have no support or the family that’s just left destitute on the street… these people cried out to God for help and I believe that God worked through YOU to answer their prayers. God is still in control and He is using His people to demonstrate His love. You were the answer to prayer when the homeless man received a winter pack, a family received 10kgs of maize meal and groceries to get them through the month. You were the answer to prayer when repairs were done to shacks that caught on fire in an informal settlement. You 09

were the answer to prayer when a community needed masks and hygiene supplies during the pandemic. You were the answer to prayer when you shared a Facebook post that provided much needed encouragement to someone that was feeling overwhelmed and anxious. You were the answer to prayer when you chose to sow into the work that CBN SA is doing and when you prayed for our staff, partners and friends of CBN SA. God is still in control! A recent survey found that 1 in 3 adults go to bed hungry because of unemployment and the subsequent loss of income. Fear, depression and discouragement are beginning to set in for many as social distress leaves them hopeless. CBN SA continues to be inundated with requests for food support from all over the country and beyond. On the ground we are now supporting 10 beneficiary organisations on a regular basis. During the COVID19 period, Operation Blessing has directly reached over 2 300 vulnerable people with an estimated
17 000 meals. This is from 1 March 2020 up to 25 August 2020. This includes impact through food parcels, winter packs, HopeKits and Sanitary Packs. Our most successful video on Facebook, Stu’s Testimony, has over 176 000 views. This is just one of the many videos online that is taking the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the nations. As a small token of appreciation, we are sending you a bookmarker made from recycled paper and seeds - we will send instructions. This is to remind you of the seed you have sown into CBN for God’s glory. May you not forget the impact that you have made into the lives of others for God’s glory. We certainly will not, and we appreciate you.
the amazing, life-giving impact that’s happened this year through the work that CBN has carried out. And we are not slowing down. We want to make an even bigger impact tomorrow, next month, next year, and we can’t do it without your help - that’s for sure. Over the last year my faith has grown so much from seeing how the body of Christ has stepped up by helping those in need. I am overwhelmed by your generosity and encouraged by the sense of community that is developing within the 700ClubZA.
Thank you so much for your support. We couldn’t be prouder to call you a partner in this work, and we look forward to seeing what else we can accomplish You are directly responsible for together for God’s Glory. D

Operation Blessing - Looking back over the last 8 months W r i tt e n
by
Nic Barker
As we look back and consider the first half of this year there have been so many highlights. One that stood out to me was with a local pastor here in SA, who also happens to be a CBN partner. We met him and found out that many in his congregation were struggling. Upon hearing this, CBN was able to assist with some food parcels for those who were in need. He was deeply moved, as he
had often watched this sort of thing on the 700 Club overseas, but now it had literally come to his doorstep. Another story, and there are many, was of a woman who started to feed a few kids from her community at the start of lockdown. Because of the negative impact of COVID19 on the families of these kids, they were in great need and what initially started as a few kids became 300 each

new gas stove.

week! She prayed and asked the Lord to help her. CBN heard about her need and was able to bless her with a heavy-duty gas stove so she could continue to meet the needs of the children. These are just two of many simple stories of God’s abundance. Indeed, this year has been unique, and there is no need to mention why. We have all been affected by the pandemic. And this has influenced the way Operation Blessing has been able to work. One of the first things which happened during COVID19 was that the borders all around the world all began to close. This meant that any planned Clean Water projects in other nations came to an immediate halt. This was exacerbated when countries went into lockdown. Luckily here in South Africa, we were able to get a certificate as an essential service provider and this allowed us to serve our nation in some simple, practical, and down to earth ways. Namely we could provide much needed food parcels and food vouchers, as well as sanitary and hygiene packs. This is the first time we have done relief efforts in such a large scale. And it was a major privilege. Through these experiences we have grown, and we have found the
scripture to be true where it says “every good and perfect gift comes from above, and He takes us from glory to glory, and from strength to strength, and He completes the good work He starts in us.” During this time, we have been encouraged to become more adaptable, agile and spontaneous in the best possible way. Because of the generosity of you, our donors, here in SA, we have been able to respond a lot quicker during this time than in previous years. This has allowed us to be on the ground more, interacting with people face to face – keeping in mind social distancing of course! I just want to say a sincere thank you to those of you who have been giving during this tough time. On behalf of all the families assisted, God bless you! You will see the full result of your gifts on that day. I also want to say thank you to those who have blessed us with food items, clothing items, and other gifts in kind. Your generosity has been so beautiful, and many people have been blessed as a result. Be sure to catch me online during the Partner Appreciation week, where I share on the above!
Missed the partner appreciation week? All of our videos will still be on Facebook. Otherwise contact us and we’ll send you the details. 12

Superbook takes the Good News to Redhill!
Superbook had the opportunity to send resources to the children whose homes burnt down in the informal township called Redhill. Operation Blessing assisted the families with food and building supplies and it felt fitting to bless the children with Superbook supplies as well. We thank the Lord for the opportunity to give and to share the good news through Superbook despite the devastating event. The children were excited to receive the activity books, crayons, slap wristbands and a flash drive with Season 1’s episodes.
You need to be smarter, Work harder, says the lie. I respond:

Orphans Promise has been supporting OVC children in the Chibote School in Zambia since 2019. These children come from extremely povertystricken circumstances. But with OP support, their school fees are now paid, they receive stationery and school clothes and can attend school and because of this support, they are given a future and a hope! Mathias Nama, the principle of Chibote School, shares a testimony from the school with us.
“The love of God is stronger than death, scripture tells us. Many people do not truly believe this saying unless God reveals Himself. Working with these orphaned children is the most amazing thing one can ever imagine.
Hundreds of them showed interest in becoming beneficiaries of the Orphans Promise Chibote Project. Amazingly, most of these children were selected when the number of possible learners increased from the initial 35 to 65.
These children were recruited using a very strict method of finding the most vulnerable children in Chibote community/society.
Since Orphans Promise started supporting these OVC children in 2019, the working relations with these children has been outstanding
15
as most of them have proved to be hard working inside and outside the classroom situation. On Wednesday, 5th August, 2020, some of these learners joined their peers in clearing the bush which had been a hive of activities for lunatics who did all sorts of evil activities. These activities ranged from gambling, to drug abuse, and even promiscuity. This bush has been a danger, not only to the school, but to the community as well. Since the school is not fenced, there was a need to clear the nearby bush and make it safe for our children. With much joy, the children supported by Orphans Promise
together with other learners, took responsibility for the potentially harmful area next to the school by helping to clean it. God has given us so much and as humans, we need to take care of what has been placed in our hands. They have done it with such a positive attitude, not working as a punishment, but to prove that as an African child, such works are part of our rich culture and prepares one for adulthood and for a better future. There is honour in work and the fruit of your hands. Blessed be the hand that giveth!! We are proud of our children and the characters they are developing into.

President Chakwera Pastoring a Nation W r i tt e n
In July this year Lazarus Chakwera became Malawi’s 6th President after an amazing turnaround campaign ‘resurrection’ in which the Constitutional Courts overturned the 2019 election results. Born in a tiny village to a poor rural family, he was the Pastor of an AOG church in Lilongwe before sensing God’s call to enter politics just 6 years ago, culminating in his campaigning for Presidency. His amazing, unexpected success in this is also a victory for democracy and for free and fair elections. Having had the privilege to talk candidly with him on a Zoom call a few weeks ago, I now also believe that his appointment to the highest office of Malawi also provides Africa with the rare opportunity to showcase and experience genuine servant leadership. For President Chakwera, as an experienced pastor and family man, serving people and Godly governance go together hand in hand.
by
Ian Walton
spoke of doing all he could to build “…a government that serves, not a government that rules; a government that inspires, not a government that infuriates; a government that listens, not a government that shouts; a government that fights for you, not against you.” How foreign this kind of leadership language is to most of the world right now!
At this early stage of his term, he has impressive support and goodwill amongst his people in the warm heart of Africa (just look at the comments about the interview on our CBN Malawi Facebook page). But even as this inevitably wains after the honeymoon period is over, his leadership mandate runs far deeper than the positive sentiment of his people. Like he In his election campaign last year he said in the interview, “One man with God is a majority”. Far more striking 17
and important than his popularity is the humble yet resolute conviction he carries – the confidence and authority of a man responding in obedience and faith to the call of His Father God. Watch our full conversation with him on our YouTube channel to get a sense of the man that is President Chakwera, as well as to get an idea of how he plans to honour the Godgiven calling he has bravely, yet humbly stepped up to fulfil. Topics touched on include:
- Pastoring a Nation vs Pastoring a Church At CBN South Africa we firmly believe God gave us this interview opportunity so that President Chakwera’s bold, practical faith and Godly wisdom can be shared and celebrated – in a world where strong servant leadership from political leaders is so desperately hard to find. Please join us in praying for him as he seeks to honour the Lord in this position – that he remains true to his calling to be an instrument of blessing and righteousness to the wonderful people of Malawi and beyond.
- Godly governance - Facing the Covid19 giant - Staying faithful to the Lord’s calling - Corruption in Africa

Q&A with Pat Robertson

I’m wondering, with the rioting, why we haven’t seen more pastors and local ministries in these communities becoming peacemakers. Isn’t the Word of God really our only solution? What can all of us do to help? I think the biggest thing you can do is to pray. The Bible says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God” And I think we need to be peacemakers. The last thing we need to do is to stir up hatred. We’ve got to love each other. And we need to understand that just because the colour of our skin may be different or just because other people may speak with different accents, we are all still creatures of God. All of us are made in the image of God. Plus, the Bible says that if you hate your brother who you’ve seen, how can you say you love God who you haven’t seen? I love God and I love my fellow man.
