A Uniquely Hong Kong Artistic Vision

emotions and levels of consciousness that are hidden deep in our heart, unknown even to the choreographers themselves. As a Hong Kong-based professional dance company that brings together the best Chinese talent to create contemporary dance, CCDC has created works that belong to the city's unique culture since the 1970s. Entering our 36th year, we continue to bring audiences programmes that reflect the zeitgeist, demonstrating the youthful, diverse and innovative spirit of Hong Kong. CCDC brings you an exciting lineup of original productions this year! In April, we present Happy Birthday? by our experienced dancer Noel Pong. In June, don’t miss the revival of our highly popular repertoire 365 Ways of Doing and Undoing Orientalism, jointly created by Xing Liang, Sang Jijia and myself. In September, we invite three mid-career dancemakers, Victor Fung, Lai Tak-wai and Bruce Wong, to demonstrate their thoughts in the new work series Eureka. In December, we proudly present a brand new work, Soledad, a collaboration by celebrated choreographer Helen Lai and illustrator and composer Peter Suart. A new wave of creativity is also coming to the CCDC Dance Centre Jockey Club Dance Theatre next year: 2016 Dancers’ Homework. Apart from our local season, CCDC tours to Beijing, Guangzhou, Taipei and Niigata, Japan. We'll also co-present the Beijing Dance Festival and Guangdong Dance Festival under our "China Dance Development Programme". By presenting young and emerging choreographers' works in Greater China Region, audience will better understand that though Hong Kong is small, we have a vibrant contemporary dance scene.

After the Handover, Hong Kong's political ecology and social atmosphere changed. What's in the mind of Hong Kong's young generations now? What do they feel? What do they understand? What's fascinating about contemporary dance is that it requires no linguistic interpretation; it uses the most direct expression of the body, revealing ideas,

In the new season, CCDC warmly welcomes Sang Jijia’s return to CCDC as Resident Choreographer. Born in Gansu, Sang Jijia’s friends nickname him Sangba. Sangba is endowed with an impressive dancing technique. His choreography features a powerful and exquisite movement language that is physically demanding of dancers. Today, his contemporary dance performances and choreography are renowned in Europe and Asia, but Sangba started studying ethnic dances at the Beijing Central University for Nationalities. It was not until he saw a production presented by the Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC, former Guangdong Experimental Modern Dance Troupe) and was so shocked by the freedom and the freewheeling style of contemporary dance, that he decided to join GMDC after graduation. Six years later he came to Hong Kong and joined CCDC as a professional dancer, which marked the beginning of his prosperous career path onto the international dance scene. Sangba is excited to return to CCDC and become our Resident Choreographer. “Willy Tsao (Founder and Artistic Director of CCDC) and I have known each other for more than 25 years. Working together again at CCDC stimulates me to think of new ideas and expectations, which will take time to realise,” he said. Asked about the direction of his creation, Sangba answered, “I’m in my 40s now. I have some thoughts, which may bring changes to my creation, but what are those changes? I advocate nature and only live for the moment so I seldom forecast too much.” Sangba mentioned that his ways of choreography will be affected by the dancers and their working attitude. “I hope to create a sense of team spirit within CCDC. This is the most important and essential thing, to both the Company and me.” Last year, CCDC reran Sangba’s choreography As If To Nothing (created jointly with experimental musician Dickson Dee and video designer Adrian Yeung) and toured to Florence for the Fabbrica Europa. The production performed to great public acclaim and was said to be the best selling contemporary dance performance for the organiser. Sangba is going to tour As If To Nothing with the Company again, with the next destination being Niigata (Japan) and Taipei, as one of the programmes in “Hong Kong Week 2015”. Moreover, 365 Ways of Doing and Undoing Orientalism, which is co-choreographed by Sangba, will be re-staged and presented to audience in Hong Kong in June. The show has been performed and acclaimed in numerous countries across the globe. Don’t miss it!

Shirley CCDC

Lok

CCDC has a diverse range of dancers. Everyone’s character and style are unique, so everyone has the room to develop their own style. However, the mentality of everyone on the stage is the same. For me, someone who was learning ballet, that’s a totally new experience.

At the happiest birthday celebration ever, a huge cake sits in the middle of the table; everyone is taking a selfie. Look at those lovebirds in the corner; they’re madly in love with each other.

Dancing lessons were offered for free at my secondary school, so I had the opportunity to learn dancing there. I loved dancing because I met girls of a similar age and similar interests during class.

Lam

A large prop suddenly fell down and hit my knee during rehearsal. I tried to stand up but my leg was paralyzed – I couldn’t move and was so scared. Others came over to take care of me. I was glad that I managed to finish the performance and had a strong feeling right then that the power of self-will and stage performance can overcome everything!

365 Ways of Doing and Undoing Orientalism is a highly acclaimed work in the repertoire of CCDC, choreographed by veteran choreographer Willy Tsao with Sang Jijia and Xing Liang. Through an exotic display and re-twisting of “oriental” elements, 365 casts doubt upon the West’s fascination with the Orient. Let’s look forward to the 2015 version after its previous successes in Australia, the US and Italy!

It was the Down to the Countryside movement, when l started dancing. My parents didn’t want me to experience the hardship as my sister did. So they sent me to dance classes instead. I jumped at the chance because I loved dancing from when I was studying it at school.

Three completely different choreographers share their eureka moment in diverse styles of contemporary dance. Fung, shuttling between Hong Kong and London, explores his life through dance. As time flies, dancing has already transcended to become a defining element of his life. Freelance dancer and choreographer Lai began his career as a dancer in Junior Ballet Contemporain (Paris), Cloud Gate Dance Theatre (Taipei) and CCDC. He unleashes a feast of creativity and originality through his unique dance language and style. Martial arts and dance are the pursuit of physical and mental advancement. In a crossover between kung fu and dance, Wong brings his search for the inner-self to the audience.

upon a method of determining the purity of gold. The noun dates from the early 20th century.

Source: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com

My most unforgettable experience was when I dislocated my shoulder on stage. I used one hand to finish the pas de deux while my partner looked at me, filled with doubt! I pushed my shoulder back into the right position just before the group dance began and managed to finish the show. What a breathtaking performance for me – literally!

A dance theatre inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Colombian writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Gabriel García Márquez, is set in the fictional town of Macondo and tells of seven generations of the Buendía family: their lives, loves, fights, joys and deaths. Many visitors pass through the family’s house, amongst them a gypsy preoccupied with studying ancient wisdom. Despite this parade of characters, the family and the town wrestle with solitude, unaware of the destiny that has been foreseen by the gypsy, which lies in his writings, waiting to be deciphered. Soledad (Spanish for solitude) – a new dance theatre piece inspired by this great work of the 1960s Latin American Boom in literature – is the first collaboration between veteran choreographer Helen Lai and the Hong Kong and UK artist Peter Suart. Lai will choreograph and direct; Suart will compose and record the music, design the set, and play a theatrical role. Between them, a world of love, desire and power will unfold, a world existing within a great and inscrutable solitude.

Although Helen Lai stepped down as CCDC’s Resident Choreographer in 2011, she didn’t stop creating. Soledad, her latest choreography for CCDC and her largest project in recent years, will be staged in December. The work is keenly anticipated, especially since it will be the first time Lai has collaborated with Peter Suart, a well-known and versatile Hong Kong and UK artist. Although Suart now lives in England, he spent half of his life in Hong Kong and is active in the city’s local performing arts scene: “I have known Helen’s work for more than 25 years but, strangely, we have never worked together.”Lai had looked forward to collaborating with Suart for a long time and when she bumped into him by chance, in a bar a year ago, she took the initiative and suggested working together on a dance performance. Suart agreed without hesitation. The pair chose One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez after considering many literary works, a choice which Suart says prompts many questions: Why do it? How to do it? Are you up to it? Lai has choreographed literature before, including Testimony (Shostakovich) and Comedy of K (Kafka). This time she draws inspiration from the novel without directly using the story, although notable events from the book may be interpreted into dance. Suart, who will perform, compose, and design the set, has embarked on a crash course in Latin American history and literature. “This study will aid an understanding of the background of One Hundred Years of Solitude, which will help to determine methods and formats, both by thought and by unspoken feeling,” he says. “I love books – literature, reference works, illustrated texts – and the channelling of this interest into the service of an art

project is a particular joy.” At this early stage, the question of whether or not to use Latin American musical and visual styles remains open. Suart also works as a book illustrator, and he is drawing and painting as part of the working process. One Hundred Years of Solitude is the story of seven generations of the Buendía family over a hundred year period in the fictional town of Macondo. The book, though not long, is epic and complex, and any detailed narrative interpretation for the stage would be both impossible and uninteresting. “Peter and I started with the idea of solitude, both of the individual and the community, the development of knowledge and invention, a cyclical view of history and the common ties of human relationship: love, desire and power,” says Lai. The gypsy Melquíades, interpreted by Suart, will act as a guide and a storyteller throughout the performance. “Melquíades takes up few pages of Márquez’ book, but is an important thread,” says Suart. He will sit in a dusty room surrounded by books and papers of arcane knowledge, separate from, but important to, the lives of those around him. Suart says, “It is not possible to bring the multiple stories of the book to the stage, but Melquíades and his room can be used, and will act as foil to the complex group world of the dancers. He is not so much narrator as outsider, inside a little room, in life and in death.” 2014 brought the news of the death of Márquez, an event offering the possibility to assess and eulogise this winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Soledad, with such a powerful creative team, will no doubt provide the audience with abundant imaginative room for the interpretation of one of his great works.

Raymond Wong, Curator of Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival

Screendance has always provided an experimental ground for choreographers and dancers with new ideas. That’s what we have witnessed over the past ten years, since the inception of Jumping Frames: diverse and distinctive styles of artistic expression, including themes, movement styles, exploration of sites and technology, have developed through dance film commissions. We are glad to collaborate continually with artists who are keen on exploring the art form through different means, ranging from film productions and video design for stage productions, to promotional trailers and stage documentaries. Their experiences have contributed to a greater success for their works, works that have received much acclaim from their peers. From this year, Jumping Frames will focus on the consolidation of artistic experience in the making of dance films, plus the international exchange of ideas. This year, CCDC has been granted new funding from the Home Affairs Bureau, to further develop screendance. The Company will make a leap forward and pursue a more mature way of commissioning, including the “New Works Forum: Screendance” co-presented with West Kowloon Cultural District Authority. We will invite screendance artists to investigate new creations, explore new methodology and discuss current issues in the contemporary arts with Hong Kong and Asian artists. Moreover, Jumping Frames will commission five larger scale productions in the coming three years, providing opportunities for artists to deepen their exploration of screendance work. Stay tuned for the Jumping Frames Festival – we now premiere commissioned works in our programme lineup annually, instead of every two years.

The flower of life splits from a circle and rotates outwards; every single cell of its petals interlocks with the others until the mother cell is formed. The process symbolises a characteristic of life – to procreate continually under dualistic nature, from generation to generation. In its role and concept, CCDC Dance Centre is just like this flower of life: it keeps nurturing, supporting, promoting and connecting each part of the dance industry, encouraging the industry to be a co-operative and connected body. Not only does CCDC Dance Centre offer regular dance courses to participants aged three and above, it also provides dance lovers at all levels with comprehensive and diverse educational opportunities. The types of dance provided range from ballet and jazz to body work and yoga. You name it, we provide it! Apart from its regular courses, CCDC Dance Centre also established the “School Modern Dance Animateur Scheme” (following its objective to inspire and train professionals) to provide foundation courses in contemporary dance for primary and secondary school students. Meanwhile, “612 Mini Dancers” and “Teens of Colours” – under CCDC’s “Dance Training Scholarship Scheme” – offer continuous training to those who are fond of dancing, aged 6 to 12 and 13 to 18 years respectively. And “WuDaoQingNian” makes use of Podium Dance Performance in order to introduce contemporary dance to the community. The scheme not only helps to promote contemporary dance, it also benefits all citizens. Together, these programmes lay a firm foundation for a younger generation who would like to immerse themselves in dancing before they advance to higher education. 2014 China Dance Forward 2014

Besides education, CCDC Dance Centre works hard to support the expansion of the dance industry. In 2004, CCDC set up CCDC Dance Centre, providing independent choreographers with eight studio rooms for rehearsals; it then evolved into the “Partnership Programme - Rehearsal Venue Sponsorship” which aids local arts. The “REAL Showcase New Series” aims at discovering talented young choreographers and helping them to produce their first full-length works, providing professional-level aid, including venues offers, administration and technology support. CCDC Dance Centre pioneers the partnership sharing existing resources with our counterpart. Beyond Hong Kong, CCDC Dance Centre looks towards the international stage, strengthening the connections between Hong Kong and the world. “China Networking Project - HONG KONG FOCUS” allows Hong Kong’s choreographers to join the Beijing Dance Festival and the Guangdong Dance Festival. Here, choreographers can refine the structure of their works after benefitting from communication and exchange with counterparts from all around the world. Thus, after sharing their ideas of dancing, they broaden their horizons and also improve the local industry. CCDC Dance Centre has also set up a seminar for academic discussions on different topics in the dance industry, such as self-identity, history and more. The seminar offers a platform for people from all walks of life and different generations to come together to review and discuss issues. With all these integrated and connected programmes, we are able to develop a more mature system and create goodwill in the dance industry, encouraging all of us to move forward hand-in-hand.

CCDC Dance Centre starts from scratch, eradicating the old and fostering the new. Over the past decade it has promoted the continual development of the industry, trying its best to establish an international status for Hong Kong, by offering training programmes, rehearsal assistance and by connecting with the world. CCDC Dance Centre never stops training new talents and creating new dancing areas, to boost the evolution of contemporary dance and lead it to a bright future. 「真演出」新系列《整容》 Plastic Surgery of REAL Showcase New Series

Dance starts from zero

There aren’t many dance activities for children aged 0 to 2.5 years to do. So what if parents and children, standing on the starting line of life, could enjoy the rhythm of their bodies and communicate through dance? Do you think it would be worth trying? To give you and your child a chance to explore the world of art and dance? At the invitation of CCDC Dance Centre, Finnish dancer Päivi Aura and her team Dance Theatre Auraco will come to Hong Kong in April, bringing their performance Me-Me to parents and children of the city. In Finnish, the meaning of “Me” is “Us”. The audience is Me. The dancers are Me. Together we are Me-Me. In this warm production unlike any others, the audience creates the story together with the dancers. Each performance is unique. Dancers will not speak, they will only dance, using body language to interact with the audience. There is an age restriction for children – a maximum of 30 months. As musicians begin to play music, the dancers will start their dance, at the same time inviting children to join in through eye contact or body language. Children will become performers as well, completing the performance together with the dancers. Some may ask, is it too soon training children to dance at young age? All steps and music have been slowly developed to suit children, encouraging them to feel the interaction with the dancers and create their own dance. But this is not about how to dance a particular style and there is no expected result for the performance. Even if children do not want to dance, parents can accompany them and enjoy the whole performance together. But then, you’ll discover that even children under 30 months of age can dance too – because “dance” is a gift that we are born with. CCDC Dance Centre presents the children’s dance performance Me-Me at 11:30am and 2:30pm on 4 and 5 April 2015 in the Jockey Club Dance Theatre, CCDC Dance Centre (G/F, 110, Shatin Pass Road, Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon). Two types of tickets are available – the Family Package and Upgrade Tickets – from 2 March at CCDC Dance Centre. Limited seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

It was only when I choreographed my own solo that I discovered I wanted to be different from the others. I want to create my own dance language. I started questioning myself and realised that I most wanted to becoming a dancer.

If you like dancing, you’re likely to come across familiar faces – partners, friends, teachers, students, and so on – whenever you enter CCDC. CCDC isn’t only a dance company, it’s also a school, rehearsal rooms – and many other things!

I had a setback when I hurt my wrist; I had an operation, which stopped me from dancing for a while. After one and a half years out, I joined “WuDaoQingNian” – that’s when I picked up dancing again. Perhaps it was because I had stopped for so long, but I’ve never stopped dancing since: I was admitted to HKAPA from “WuDaoQingNian” and then became a professional dancer.
