Suggested Reading by Peter Suart on Latin American literature and Gabriel García Márquez

I have no expertise in Latin American literature, and these thoughts are offered as a newcomer. The suggestions below are books that I’ve read as background for CCDC’s Soledad show, and are thus a personal choice rather than a representative one. Read García Márquez for the story, for the prose, for the wit, imagination and craft, for the social and political engagement. The General in His Labyrinth recounts Bolívar’s last days; read it in conjunction with Bolívar’s letters and addresses, and with a biography. The Autumn of the Patriarch is darker than 100 Years: a swamp in a palace; the terrible nature of power. Of Love and Other Demons is short, highly coloured and delightful. Living to Tell the Tale is a memoir. If you have asked yourself, ‘Where did One Hundred Years of Solitude come from?’, you’ll find the answer here: from García Márquez’ life. Gerald Martin’s biography of García Márquez is an excellent account of the life and work. Borges’ Fictions is a set of short stories: poetic, strange, intellectually labyrinthine. Las Casas’ book is horrific: a short account and condemnation of the appalling violence perpetrated by the conquistadors in the Americas, written by a Spanish Dominican friar and bishop. A book to be endured rather than enjoyed, it offers an essential perspective, albeit one that is contested in some quarters. Greene’s The Power and the Glory is an English novelist’s view of 1930s Mexico and the suppression of the Church. The Song of the Cid is a 12/13th century chivalric poem, and a foundation work of Spanish literature. I haven’t listed Don Quixote as it counts with air and water amongst the necessities of human life. All suggested titles are by men. I also read Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’ Poems, Protest, and a Dream. She was a 17th century nun in the Mexico of the Spanish Empire, a scholar and poet, and defender of the right of women to study. That right is one we should fight for by all peaceful means. The Spanish Civil War of the 1930s is of interest as an analogue of the incessant warring in Latin America between the political Left and Right. Oxford University publishes excellent Very Short Introductions, including one on that war. The 16th century conquistadors went in search of Eldorado. Of inestimably higher value, the gold of Latin American literature is available through libraries, one of the noblest institutions of mankind.
