April club day was a great roll up, after checking the usual haunts on the way through, there was not a lot on offer, so all hopes were on Avoca.

with the premier event a no holds barred affair, there is something to be said about not wearing a watch in the water. It allows a competitor who will remain nameless to ask their fellow heat surfer how long to go in the heat whilst the sets are coming, when he checked his watch the other fella shot up the bank onto the first of the sets. This was met with a look of disbelief and a good dose of laughter all round. The day went smoothly thanks to the hard work of Leanne in the tally tent, and Greg judging nearly all day, thanks to

magoo The 2013 Magoo Charity Classic was again a hugely successful weekend; loads of fun, awesome feel good atmosphere, great waves and a financial shot in the arm for Central Coast Health Cancer Care.

The comp area was buzzing with one of our biggest rollups for a few years. We had about 120 surfers keen to get amongst the action for the two days. The sponsors set up all over the ample

heat came in at 4.20 we were roaring out of the car park at 4.40.

The Auction night on the Saturday evening at the sporties was a huge success. With Sojo and the auction crew making sure everything went smoothly, he whipped the eager crowd into a bidding frenzy unseen before in this quiet neck of the woods, and made it a very entertaining evening. I am not quite sure what time the auction finished? It was late. But not late enough for the sporties to make me let go of the fine refreshments on offer, suffice to say I wish they had, as Sunday would have been a far nicer day.

An event such as this does not come together without great competitors, lots of help behind the scenes, judges and massive support from our sponsors.

Day 2 – Magoo Charity Classic Our trusty contest director Hayzy had everything under control from the start of the comp on the Saturday. He already had a bank picked out at Lakes Beach to go to for the Sunday, and as the sun was coming up he was onto it, with the setup chosen north of the Lakes Beach Surf Club. Again a fast setup and we were off and running on finals day. The howling southerly overnight had jacked the swell up to overhead with 6ft plus sets screaming through with a nice offshore wind to start the day’s proceedings. There were some real powerful waves hitting the bank, but watching the fellas in the open 8 and open 9 was mind blowing. They absolutely tore it to shreds with the likes of Christian Pimm, Mitch Fraser, Terry Byrne, Shane Baker, Bryce Williams and Kai Ellice-Flint, toying with the solid waves.

2013 All the age divisions were hotly contested, and the SUP guys were charging into it no holds barred. In a show of great sportsmanship in the SUP final, Andrew Cassidy went to the rescue of young Harry Maskell who had broken his leg rope and watched his board get washed in. He was really struggling to get to shore until Andrew hit the scene, well done. The women’s division weren’t to be out done and really took it on charging in the strong conditions The Pink Hog was running around like a lunatic all day, it was absolutely hilarious and great fun for the kids as well as the oldies. The day finished with an Open 9’ final that rendered the crowd speechless! There were a couple of broken boards and some turns and manoeuvres done that were not meant to be done on long boards. Actually they would have been pushing the boundaries on short boards. All wrapped up on time and back to the sporities for the post wrap up. The final first place results are Over 60- Danny Bond / Over 55- Dave Fraser / Over 50- Wayne Dive / Over 45- Dave Hayes / Over 40- Jeremy Smith / Over 28- Christian Pimm / Open Women- Claire Norman / Under 18- Kai Ellice Flint / SUP- Shane Ross / Old Mal- Shane Ross / Open 8- Christian Pimm / Open 9- Christian Pimm. Congratulations to you all. The complete results are available on the Magoo website www.magoocharityclassic.com.au. Not to be out done the juniors hit it with just as much gusto, and the Old Mal riders really came into their own. All this was amazing to watch, but not as amazing as watching Magoo suit up for his heat and paddle into the line up. He copped a bit of a beating from Huey in these less than gentle surroundings. Caught a few waves and had an 84 year old smile that looked more like a stoked 16 year grommet when he hit the shore! Only a surfer knows the feeling and this said it all! He was met with hoots and cheers on the beach and even louder hoots and hollers from the strong Bondi crew who made the trek north. This was followed by a big cheque for the hospital from his mate Bill Currey who has been a massive supporter of this fantastic event. Oh Magoo you’ve done it again!

An event such as this does not come together without great competitors, lots of help behind the scenes, judges and massive support from our sponsors. So to everyone involved, congratulations and thankyou for making the Magoo a great success again in 2013. Collectively every person involved in the Magoo Charity Classic this year, has helped raise $28,500 for cancer research on the coast, taking us to over $300,000 raised in the past 14 years.
