Lakesloitering There’s never been a dull or boring CCMB club day. If it’s not the weather and waves playing tricks on the unwary – you can almost guarantee that one or two club members will come up with a classic faux pas’ to get the laugh-o-meters going.

And this particular day would prove to be no exception to the status quo. The wiser (and I mean that without tongue in cheek) among us made what was considered by the dull and ignorant to be an utterly unwise decision to move from Lakes SLSC to a point further north supposedly offering a much better selection of wave conditions. “Rubbish” said almost all and sundry! “Let’s head back to the clubhouse.” Overruled, and of course as the day wore on, most, including your scribe, had to eat a bit (lots) of humble pie and admit that EL Prezo and his very small band of cohorts were absolutely correct in their predictions of improving conditions at this location. There, I’ve said it and there’ll be no more crawling in this newsletter! Around 25 very lucky participants enjoyed idyllic winter conditions. A beautiful beach set-up with clean and glassy 2’ to 3’ waves gently fanned by a soft north westerly breeze. Quite early in the morning we experienced what could best be described as almost late spring conditions with many taking to the shorts, tees and bare feet. And almost mid-winter!

For very good reason we are absolutely ‘the lucky country’. The usual many thanks to all who gave a willing hand during set-up. Special mention to Clive T who never fails to volunteer for battery carting duty. The battery will be the first of our gear to be dumped on the ground where all passers-by manage to conveniently ignore it for anything else that is handier (and lighter). If it wasn’t for our very own “macho, macho man” I think the much heavier than air item would be often left to find its own way to the beach! Have to also make a mention of how good kids have it these days. How many dads would carry their daughter’s beach igloo

The penalty for such nonsense was, of course, after paddling all the way out sans rashie having to do it all over again. And also the Gumbie award! Dan managed an almost, but not quite good enough job of disguising a bit of snaking on Geoff B. Very brave Dan, “you can run, but you can’t hide”. The Prez is a master at the surprise payback! The same Prez also managed a nice fin chop on his foot that, although not opening him up, certainly left a pretty gnarly lump that may make donning a pair of shoes a little difficult for a few days. Ron G managed an early retirement due to what he described as “rib cartilage damage sustained playing soccer”. Soccer? Maybe time to hang up the boots Ron! If truth be known he was overheard very quietly confiding to one of our down the beach and also then set the thing up for them? Well done Dan, although I hope next time Mia carries

ed’s rave Lakes turned it on again for the lucky CCMB crew, the lefts were nothing short of sensational... But I may be a little biased coming from the goofy foot brigade. I am glad J.O mentioned the groaning and moaning about why this spot? Lets just say it was a 50-50 bet and lucky for all of us the dividend was worth the punt, just look at the smile on young Tonys face! Congratulations to young Jake on grabbing a few sensational tube rides on the day, only bummer was we were in the same heat, so I got to see how good they were right up close, it is great seeing the stoked smile of a young fella living the dream, only a surfer knows the feeling!

voodoo to

sandshoes part 2

Well, here it is, Part 2 of my own (very abridged) personal recollections of 60,s surfing culture. The old “plywood plank” had mysteriously disappeared one week night from under Uncles house at Wanda. We never did discover its fate; however, I suspect it may have been offered up to Huey as a beach bonfire sacrifice! We never did discover the culprits, but the smouldering embers found on the beach on Saturday morning did kind of give us a clue as to it’s ultimate fate. I had just left school at 15 years of age and not really knowing exactly where my life was headed (aside from sport and girls) I applied for and was accepted to the venerable position of general rouse-about and finish coat trainee at Keen Davis surfboards in North Sydney. The magic of

were always jam packed and although unlicensed at this time it was not unusual to see the odd bottle of Vodka mixed with club orange juice passed around to add to the fun. And of course Mary Jane was also often in attendance to add to an already heady mix of music from the likes of Little Pattie, The Delltones, The Surfaris and many other great surf bands of this period. The G&S was shortly traded for the 9’ Scott Dillon which for some unknown reason has fortunately sort of hung around to the present day. I guess it would be kind of nice to have all of those old boards back. Oh well, “se la vie”. Dad was kind enough to advance me a loan, paid back in very long instalments, to purchase a 9’6” Norm Casey which at the time to me was better (I sort of think) than winning a date with Sophia Loren.
