Motorcyclists can take North Hwy 58 to Necedah and take Hwy 21 to check out the National Wildlife Refuge, cross over to New Lisbon and Hustler on Hwy 80 and then come back to Mauston on Hwy 12/16. From there, they can drop down to Lyndon Station and explore that part of the county by taking county road HH.

Hwy 131 out of Tomah, south through the valley a great scenic tour along the Kickapoo River, ample opportunity to take scenic roads off the main route which provide significant hilly terrain to ride on. This ride includes views of Amish Communities and great cheese factories. Route ends at LaFarge, and the scenery is great, road quality excellent. The Kickapoo River Visitor Center is very interesting…stop in. This route crosses the Kickapoo River at least 12 times as it winds thru the valley, beautiful forests on either side and if one ventures onto the scenic road as designated, major elevation changes and very interesting elements including an Amish school and many farms, a great local cheese factory and store and some very prosperous farms. The main road is great, well paved and maintained, 45 mph limit, the scenic road is less maintained but still quite good, with frequent horse droppings to avoid…remember you are in Amish Country.

Petenwell Lake is the second largest inland lake in Wisconsin, and is well known for its great fishing. Walleyes, northern pike, muskies and pan fish are plentiful and there's plenty of public boat launches available. The lake is 23,000+ acres over a 36 sq. mile area. It was created in 1948 by damming the Wisconsin River near Necedah. Its maximum depth is over 40' and is well-known for its excellent fishing and waterfowling. American eagles winter at the dam and can be observed daily during the season. Camping at Wilderness Park on Petenwell Lake ranges from full hookup to primitive and the scenery is great.

Wisconsin River S ince the Wisconsin River starts at the Michigan border a couple of hundred river miles upstream from Juneau County and is fed by dozens of smaller streams and rivers the Wisconsin River is “Big Water” by the time it gets to northernmost Juneau County. It can become quite powerful and dangerous when high. The first boat landing upstream in Juneau County is located in the town of Armenia of the eastern end of 4th Street accessed from County Highway G north of Necedah. This section of river already is part of the Petenwell Flowage which is the 2nd largest lakes in Wisconsin. Because of the wide open expanses of the Petenwell Flowage, winds can cause big waves to build up very quickly. Paddlers should exercise caution wearing their PFDs and staying close to the western shore (down river right) when paddling the Petenwell. A short way downstream on the Petenwell Flowage is located Juneau County’s Wilderness Park (for more information call (608) 565-7285 (Mid May – September) or (608) 847-9389 (October – Mid May) at the east end of 9th street accessed from County Rd. G, North of Necedah. This is a modern park with facilities including coin operated showers, flush toilets, 120 campsites and a concrete paved boat launching area. Another boat launch area is located at the eastern end of 10th street which is a public landing located on Petenwell Flowage reached off County Trunk G north of Necedah. Further downstream below the Petenwell Dam east of Necedah on the eastern side of the Highway 21 Bridge over the Wisconsin River in Adams County is a public boat landing with outhouse facilities and hand pump well water. This is a well developed boat launching area and large power boats put in here to go up stream to the Petenwell dam for fishing and cruise further downstream

stretch above the bustling Dells, you will find great fishing holes and shorelines abundant with wildlife. No speed boats here. This is where you come to enjoy nature. A short distance downriver from the dam you will find Castle Rock Resort. Located on the western shore of the Wisconsin River, this resort boasts the actual Castle Rock on its property and has camping facilities, hot showers, laundry facilities, seasonal sites, a boat launch and a bar. It is a great midway stopping point between the Castle Rock Dam and the Dells. It is open Mid April through mid November. The resort is located east of Mauston on Hwy 82, traveling North via 49th St. and 26th Ave. (For information and reservations call 608-8476269 or visit www.camptherock. com) As you continue further down this lazy stretch you will find Point Bluff Resort on the east shore. Here you will find a bar and restaurant, canoe, kayak and tube rentals as well as camping and seasonal sites. (For information and reservations contact 608253-6181 or visit www.pointbluff. com) Further downstream on the Wisconsin River is the Juneau County owned public Two Rivers boat landing on the Lemonweir River about one quarter mile upstream from the junction with the Wisconsin River. The Two Rivers Boat Landing is northeast of Lyndon Station accessible from Highway HH thence going east on 56th Street onto Cliff House road and down to the river via Wisconsin Trail. Going downstream there is also the River Bay Marina riverbay@dells-camping.com on the Wisconsin River at the upper end of the Wisconsin Dells Flowage. River Bay has flush toilets, coin operated hot showers, laundry facilities and is also located east of Lyndon Station via County N and four miles north of Wisconsin Dells. Additionally the Town of Lyndon has a public boat landing on the Wisconsin River accessed from Highway N at the end of 60th Street which requests a donation for use. Louis Bluff is the large highland just upstream of River Bay Marina. The Bluff was named after the

Frenchman Louis Dopless who settled here in 1846. The high wooded prominence is fronted by beautiful cliffs along the river. Traveling further downriver from the RiverBay Marina on the Wisconsin River paddlers experience the extremes of a lakewidening of the river and a long narrow rocky gorge. Downstream from River Bay on the right are the Palisades, towering rock formations eroded by wind and water. They signal the beginning of the Upper Dells. In this section of the Upper Dells the Wisconsin River can be extremely dangerous at high water and should never be paddled by inexperienced boaters at any water level. Big tour boats and other motorized craft oftentimes create hazardous wakes in the last four miles of this section. In “The Jaws” the river is 120 feet deep! Because that during the height of the tourism season thousands of people view this part of the Dells from large motor launches and other fast boats, for most people the best way to see the Dells is from a tour boat obtained in Wisconsin Dells. For experienced paddlers a good time to try this route is at dawn well before the tour boats get started. For skilled paddlers, the trip through the Upper Dells is quite a remarkable experience. Quite a bit of the land along both sides of the river is owned by the Department of Natural Resources so that the rugged grandeur of the Dells has been preserved in a natural state. Natural wonders in this river portion include Witches Glen, Steamboat Rock, Cold Water Canyon, The Giant’s Shield (at waterline), The Devil’s Elbow, Blackhawk’s Profile, and Chimney Rock. One option could be to put in at the pull off alongside County N near the head of Black Hawk Island. From this point you can paddle a route around the island and back again to avoid a shuttle or as an alternative, paddlers could continue down river into Wisconsin Dells to the municipal boat landing. The many bike trails of Juneau County are just waiting for your visit. They all begin (or end) in Elroy WI, located on Hwys 80-82 in southwestern Juneau County. The Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail is the “Granddaddy of All Trails.“ It was the very first Rails to Trails Conversion in the United States in 1965. The hard-packed limestone trail covers 32 miles of an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed and has no more than a 3% grade at any point. The trail passes through three tunnels as it makes its way toward Sparta and we recommend flashlights and jackets for tunnels. The ElroySparta State Bike Trail links with the La Crosse River Trail in Sparta.

The '400' State Trail is often called the most scenic trail in the Wisconsin State Trail System. It's named for the Chicago & Northwestern passenger train that traveled the 400 miles from Chicago to Minneapolis in 400 minutes. The 22 miles of smooth, hard-packed limestone parallels or crosses the Baraboo River the entire length between Elroy and Reedsburg. A recent addition to the trail links Hillsboro to the south. The Juneau County Omaha Bike Trail is 12.5 miles of seal-coated trail owned and maintained by Juneau County and has a separate trail fee. It also follows an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed all the way to Camp Douglas and opened in the spring of 1992. The Omaha Trail is the most peaceful and secluded of our trails. Elroy Commons Elroy is the hub of the three major bike trails in Juneau County. The Omaha Trail is a 12.5 mile trail from Elroy to Camp Douglas along the old Chicago & Northwestern railbed. The Elroy-Sparta Trail heads west and north to Sparta along 32 miles of hard-packed, limestone trail. The trail features three tunnels along its route. The ‘400’ Trail heads east out of Elroy following the Baraboo River to Reedsburg, some 22 miles away. At Union Center, the ‘400’ Trail branches off as the Hillsboro State Trail. Elroy is located on Hwys 71, 80 & 82 in southwestern Juneau County. Information on the trails can be found by calling the Commons Trails Shop at 608-462-2410.

id-Continent Railway Historical Society, also known as, MidContinent Railway Museum is an

outdoor, living museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the railroad legacy with operating trains, educational exhibits, and displays or restored stock. Mid-Continent has operated at North Freedom, Wisconsin since 1963. The Museum's mission is to collect, preserve and restore equipment that meets the Museum's focus. We also strive to operate a steam passenger train in an historically accurate environment of a turn-of-thecentury rural railroad. The Museum is committed to its educational programs, the history, equipment, skills, and

the human facets of the rail industry. We're proud to maintain a library and archival collections in the interest of promoting historical studies of the industry in public trust. We are a not-for-profit,

A Wisconsin engine for most of her career, she worked such locations as the Eau Claire branch, the Portage and Manitowoc lines, and served as a switcher at such locations as Neenah and North Fond du Lac.

We've maintained a very narrow scope in our purpose to focus on those railroads that operated in the upper Midwest during what is popularly called the "Golden Age of Railroading." This has given the museum a unique look so that a visitor today feels like they have stepped back in time. It has also helped to keep the museum's limited resources committed to a manageable task. The membership roster averages nearly 700 people each year. A board of twelve directors governs museum operations. They in turn supervise a paid staff, who handle the day-today business of the museum. The next major step in securing Mid-Continent's position as a true railroad museum.

Soo Line #2645

4-6-0, Brooks Locomotive Works, constructed in 1900

After accumulating over one million miles in 55 years of service, the Soo Line retired and donated her to the City of Waukesha for static display. In 1988, #2645 was donated to Mid-Continent. Volunteers quickly sprung into action and prepared the locomotive for movement on her own wheels to the museum grounds, and she arrived on property in North Freedom in July of 1989. She received a cosmetic restoration and is now on display near the freight house, across from the depot.

he #49 was one of four 2-8-0's constructed in March 1929, by the American Locomotive Company's Schenectady Works, for fast freight service on the Kewaunee Green Bay & Western across central Wisconsin from Kewaunee to Winona. These time-freights transported auto frames and other parts for the Ford Motor Company from their Detroit area plants to a Ford auto assembly plant in St. Paul, Minnesota. KGB&W's line provided the middle link in the most direct route between Detroit and St. Paul, bypassing the congested Chicago area by crossing Lake Michigan on a car ferry. In the fall of 1981, after preparation by Mid-Continent volunteers, the engine was moved to North Freedom, and received a cosmetic restoration. #49 is the only surviving steam locomotive of the Green Bay Route, merged into Wisconsin Central in 1993.*

Wisconsin means dark waters in a Native American language. The dark water of the Wisconsin River and Lake Wisconsin comes from the very dark roots of the Tamarack trees which line its banks in the northern part of the state and bleed a natural dye into the river. Many varieties of fish thrive in these waters, making Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River a fisherman’s paradise.

The 9,500 acre lake has 57 miles of shoreline, and the lake and river have more than 18 miles of navigable waterway with a depth that varies to a maximum of 40 feet. Boaters love to dock at the many sand bars for a swim, picnic or even to camp overnight.

Tourists from all over the world come here to relax and enjoy this

beautiful area. Once a favorite hunting and fishing ground of the early tribes, it is now a popular tourist destination for camping and water sports, as well as more leisurely activities and family adventures. The Merrimac Ferry, named “Colsac” because it bridges Columbia and Sauk counties, is a highlight to experience and the only free ferry in the state. It crosses the Wisconsin River from Highway 113 in Merrimac south to the junction of Highways 188 and 113 just north of Lodi. Trip time is 10 minutes, and 15 cars (trailers too) can cross at one time. It runs 24 hours a day during the months the lake is not frozen. Top it off with a stop at a nearby restaurant or ice cream stand.

CIRCUS WORLD MUSEUM Circus families know that circus is a way of life… a life that demands dedication, constant attention to detail, physical conditioning, and respect for tradition. However, they also know that if they work hard, the result is magic. New to Circus World in Baraboo is the world-renowned Aristov family. Russian-born Igor and Ukrainian wife Tatiana dazzle in their high-energy juggling act. Their son George brings his astonishing contortion and hand-balancing act perched high atop five constantly moving cylinders; a phenomenal display of acrobatic skill and daring. The Aristov Family has appeared throughout the world; even with The Rolling Stones. Heidi Herriott, a third-generation American circus entertainer and animal trainer, brings her celebrated equestrian act to the center ring. Herriott shares the spotlight with daughter Cassidy, an aerialist who gracefully

AMISH COUNTRY

he Amish communities of Wisconsin are centered in three general areas: in the northeastern part of the state south and east of the city of Eau Claire; in the southeast region stretching from Whitewater down to Beloit; and in the south-central region, including our very own counties of Columbia, Green Lake, Marquette and Sauk.

Generally, all the Amish in south-central Wisconsin are Old Order Amish, with no tractors in the fields, few telephones except at an occasional shop or along a lonely lane, hook-andeye closures on clothing instead of buttons, and small one-room schoolhouses. One can find several Amish businesses, or businesses supporting Amish heritage, along many

routes in the area. Most of these roads are very old and follow the "lay of the land", and were constructed using routes in existence in the 1700's and 1800's. Once into the interior of Amish country, it is impossible to get anywhere quickly! Please slow

down and show courtesy to horse-drawn wagons and buggies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we want everyone to remain safe. Besides, scenery is always more enjoyable when viewed at a slower pace. You will wind along bluff tops, down alongside rushing creeks

and through uplands dotted with farms and country churches. The lodging and food choices here are fewer but perfectly fine; ranging from country inns to family motels to cabins. Enjoy a quiet drive through Amish country and discover a simpler time and an area rich in heritage.

SUMMERSET THEATRE

ummerset Theatre began as a summer company that performed outdoors on the beautiful campus of University of Wisconsin-Baraboo Sauk County. This relatively new company began performing family-friendly plays on the hillside overlooking the Baraboo bluffs in 2005. Summerset Theatre brought together on one stage a cast that was 1/3 professionals, 1/3 student actors, and 1/3 community actors. This mixture creates a wonderful exchange of ideas and talents as well as a great show. Summerset Theatre has since grown into UW-Baraboo's Summerset Festival of the Arts, an annual multi-disciplinary arts celebration that engages participants in a variety of arts experiences. The organization includes an Artistic Director, a Managing Director, a Marketing and Development Committee and Planning

Committees organized around eight arts areas: music, theatre, literary arts, visual arts, dance, film, culinary arts and youth arts. Members on these committees include UW-BSC faculty and staff, local artists, local citizens with marketing expertise, and arts advocates in our community. Summer 2012 will be the Festival's second year. In its debut year, Summerset partnered with the Baraboo Public Library, the Al. Ringling Theatre's Stage III Children's Theatre, RAVE Theatre, the Baraboo Theatre Guild, the Purple Cow Poets, the UW-BSC Campus and Community Band, and a number of individual local artists, performers and scholars in the arts and humanities. Plans for this year's second annual festival include collaborations with the Sauk County Arts Association to work with students to transform the UW-BSC

campus into a space of art; the Baraboo Farmer's Market where contestants in a creative culinary competition will grab their fresh ingredients; the Alzheimer's Foundation and the local Purple Cow Poets to present a reprise of the Alzheimer's Poetry Project; Chicago based filmmaker and Baraboo native John Mossman who worked with UW-BSC students on a shoot in Southeastern Wisconsin for his latest film; and many local authors, artists and arts and humanities experts. Workshops will be offered in songwriting, multimedia art, playwriting, creative writing, book repurposing, flute playing, stage combat, and Latin dance, among others.

RUSTIC ROADS

isconsin is home to many beautiful routes to travel in the country. The purpose of the Rustic Road program is to identify and preserve in a natural and essentially undisturbed condition certain designated roads having unusual or outstanding natural beauty, by virtue of native vegetation along with natural or man-made features associated with the road. Many of you may remember that the Department of Transportation at one time published a Rustic Roads directory, and several folks may even still have their copy. A few words of advice â&#x20AC;&#x201C; keep your copy. They are now out of print, and WisDOT no longer sends out copies upon request. However, all the routes, with maps and descriptions, are available at: www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/scenic/maps. htm Columbia County, Vernon County, Marquette County, Sauk County, and Adams County are home to a few of these scenic and historic drives, and are just off the main roads you already take to visit many of the businesses in this magazine.

Location: Vernon County. Tunnelville Road, beginning at its junction with WIS 131 to the intersection of Tunnelville Road and County SS.

Location: Vernon County. Portions of Dutch Hollow Road, Sand Hill Road, Hoff Valley Road, and Lower Ridge Road. R56 begins at the intersection of Dutch Hollow Road and WIS 131, extending to the intersection of Lower Ridge Road and WIS 131.

Length: 2.8 miles Surface: Paved and gravel portions In the spring, Tunnelville Road traverses fields of trilliums, while summer lines the steep road edges with ferns and wildflowers. The fall foliage is always colorful and in winter the traveler will appreciate the views of the hillsides coated with snow and the wealth of trees along the road.

Length: 8.6 miles Surface: Paved This route offers many scenic views including Wildcat Mountain State Park, Amish farms, log cabins, a round barn, and examples of contour farming.

Location: Columbia County. Portions of Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connor, Van Ness and Chrislaw roads between WIS 60 and WIS 113.

Location: Adams County. Cottonville Avenue (Old State Road), from Eighth Drive east to Fourth Avenue.

Length: 5.9 miles

Length: 4.6 miles

Surface: Paved R110 meanders through prime agricultural land interspersed with ponds and small lakes, marshland and rolling hills covered in trees. Wildlife abounds through the route. Outstanding fall foliage make R110 a very good tour route.

Rustic Road 14 Location: Adams County. Ember Drive between County A Highway and County Highway B. Length: 2 miles Surface: Gravel This thickly forested area supports a multitude of wildlife and wildflowers. The road winds through a cleft on top of a bluff. A natural spring runs from the top of the bluff down the side of the road to the east.

Surface: Unpaved Locals call this road the State Road because it was laid out by the state, probably in the 1800â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Vistas along this road include native lowland and upland trees, shrubbery and marshes. Wild birds, deer, and grouse abound.

Rustic Road 21 Location: Sauk County. Just off County PF, follow portions of Schara Road, Ruff Road and Orchard Drive, and Slotty Road. Length: 8.6 miles Surface: Gravel Ruff Road, Orchard Drive, and Slotty Road are narrow, gravel roads. They wind through rolling, rugged terrain, near Natural Bridge State Park where the Raddatz rock shelter is located, the oldest documented site of primitive man in the upper-midwest. Schara Road extends along a ridge bordered by oaks, maples, basswoods and hickories. Remains of an old barn and home foundation are visible from the road. A walk during the spring and summer reveals many wildflowers along the roadside and in the open fields. Note: Slotty Road was added in 1996.

Rustic Road 49 Location: Sauk and Columbia Counties. Levee Road, beginning at the intersection with County T east to the intersection with WIS 33. Length: 9.8 miles Surface: Paved Levee Road travels through the Aldo Leopold reserve along the Wisconsin River, giving motorists, bikers and hikers an opportunity to view prairie grasses, wildlife, trees and marsh in their natural setting.

Rustic Road 104 Location: Marquette and Columbia Counties. 14th Road and Barry Avenue between County O and County CM. Length: 2.8 miles Surface: Paved This road passes over hills and valleys closely bordered by mixed hardwood forests and large cottonwood trees. Picturesque, century-old farms can be seen from several locations. The French Creek Wildlife Area and John Muir State Natural Area are nearby. There are remnant prairie patches and abundant wildlife along R-104.

Rustic Road 69 Location: Columbia County. Old Agency House Road, from East Albert Street to the north end near the Old Indian Agency House. Length: .75 miles Surface: Paved R69 travels along the historic Portage Canal. On one side of the road are wetlands which serve as a habitat for sandhill cranes, blue heron, and many other birds. The road leads to the historic Indian Agency House. Built in 1832, the house is open to the public. The northeast end of the road connects with the Marquette Trail. One can also view the remnants of the Old Fort Winnebago Locks. This canal joined the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, making travel by water possible for the first time from Green Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.
