Lake Wisconsin & Lodi What Makes Lodi and Lake Wisconsin so Special? The Lodi and Lake Wisconsin area features restaurants, shopping, and year round outdoor fun - all in a small town feel. All of the activities take a back stage to our beautiful 10,000 acre lake-Lake Wisconsin. This well kept secret, offers boating, fishing, skiing, tubing and swimming fun!

The Legend of Susie the Duck

In 1948, a country mallard made Lodi her home. She settled in the downtown area and laid her eggs in a large masonry basket full of beautiful flowers. When her eggs hatched, she drew quite a bit of attention as locals and visitors came to observe her brood. Lodi’s then police chief and his granddaughter also came to see the small fuzzy baby ducklings and their mother. The chief asked his granddaughter what she thought the mother duck’s name should be? She replied “Susie”. Susie has faithfully returned to her flower basket for years, raising many ducklings and much media attention. Through the years, many “Susies” have nested

7

the flower basket. Each year Lodi hosts an annual “Susie the Duck Day” celebrating the famous fowl who nests in the heart of Lodi.

Lodi Ag Fair

Lodi is one of three cities in the state of Wisconsin to have its own fair. This free fair, which has been running for 149 years, begins on the first Thursday of July and runs through Sunday. Exhibits include livestock judging, school artwork, baking contests and local organization display booths. There are carnival rides and games. Attractions include tractor pulls and the hugely popular demolition derby. There is also a live music beer garden.

Susie Day

Columbia County

Barn Quilts There are now even more reasons to travel the highways and byways of Columbia County…..Barn Quilts! With over 40 Barn Quilts to be found across Columbia County it’s a great way to see the countryside while celebrating the agricultural heritage of our county through the warmth and beauty of quilting art. Barn Quilts of Columbia County is a project of the Columbia County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE) and Columbia County UW-Extension. Each colorful quilt design is painted on an 8 X 16 foot plywood and each is a work of art. Some are installed on working barns that are busy with the rhythms of farm life while others are on “retired” barns that are no longer used or have been repurposed. The barns may be freshly painted or weathered. Many of the Barn Quilts that adorn these buildings have a story to tell that reflects the history of the farmstead. A few examples will demonstrate the uniqueness of each Barn Quilt. For the Seemann family, the design of their Barn Quilt --- Mariner’s Compass --- was inspired by two things: a) the German name “Seemann” means water people and b) living at a four-corner crossroads, the family has always been helping people find the right direction. The Hughes family members agreed on a quilt depicting Indian corn partly because mounds near the barn were built by people who inhabited

www.travelcolumbiacounty.net

what is now Columbia County thousands of years before European explorers and settlers arrived. The quilt pattern for the Cupery barn -- Great Wildlife -- was chosen because 1700 acres of DNR land (French Creek) are adjacent to the property and waterfowl are abundant. Learn more about the Columbia County

Barn Quilts, including an interactive map, photo and information about the farmsteads and quilt patterns by visiting the UW-Extension website, http://columbia. uwex.edu/family-living/barnquilts-3/ or stop by the UW-Extension office for print information. The Barn Quilts of Columbia County await you!

How it Works: 1. Use the mileage chart on the bike-n-camp website to determine how far you want to ride and choose the campgrounds you would like to stay at.

5. Pack your gear each day so it is ready to be transported to the next bike-n-camp campground.

2. Make the reservations at each campground and arrange for gear transportation. Each day the next campground you are staying at will transport your gear from the previous nights stay to the next campground while you enjoy your ride. Costs for gear transport may vary depending on your group size, the distance, and the number of trips required to transport your gear and the individual campground transportation rates. They will transport only gear such as tents, sleeping bags, pillows, sleeping pads, backpacks, duffle bags, coolers, cooking gear, small portable camp stoves (no large gas grills), folding camp chairs, and tool bags. No camping trailers or utility trailers. Travel light! No pet transport.

7. Camp.

3. Plan your route based on the recommended bike routes using the state and county bike maps on the bike-n-camp website. 4. Arrange a time for your gear to be picked up with the next campground on your trip.

30

6. Bike. 8. Go to step 5, repeat and have fun. Participating campgrounds are located in central Wisconsin. All campgrounds are members of WACO the Wisconsin Association of Campground Owners.

Serving the following counties: Adams, Columbia, Dane, Marquette, Portage, Sauk and Waushara.

Historic

Portage The Portage Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to Historic Portage. Portage is a wonderful place to grow your business, raise your family or just visit. The area offers small town charm with residential neighborhoods and growing commercial and industrial business sites, next to the beautiful Wisconsin and Fox Rivers. Our strong historical heritage offers an excellent environment in which to live and work. We are certainly eager to share this rich history with all who pass through. The historical distinction of Portage lies in its unique geographical location between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. Here, the two rivers, one flowing north to the St. Lawrence, the other south to the Mississippi, are separated by a narrow neck of land over which, for two centuries, adventurers and settlers traveling the waterway had to

portage their canoes and heavy packs from one stream to another. The settlement, which grew here because of the resulting traffic, was first known as “Wau-wau-onah,” Winnebago for “carry on the shoulder.” During the French occupation, it was simply “le portage” (from porter: to carry). This was eventually Anglicized to Portage. Today, Portage boasts many outdoor recreational resources, wonderful homes, excellent schools and well established industries that provide solid employment opportunities. Both residents and visitors can relax and unwind in one of Portage’s many parks, take in the area’s beautiful scenery along the rivers or visit any of our seven historic attractions. Our historic downtown contributes to the history coming alive in Portage. You will find a variety of quaint niche stores, restaurants and specialty

shops all located next to our beautiful Portage Canal and levee walking path. Complimenting the downtown are many other dining establishments, specialty stores, entertainment venues and a variety of larger national retail chains located in the community. You are sure to find some entertainment options by taking in a movie at our seven-screen Theatre or stopping in for an art show or play production at our Portage Center for the Arts. Keeping yourself active will be easy by taking in a game of golf at one of our local courses or during the winter months you can take part in curling at our local club or skiing at Cascade Mountain. Whether you are interested in visiting our community or you are looking to relocate and make Portage your home, we hope you explore and discover all that we have to offer.

Historic indian Agency y House o se at Ft. Winnebago

Visit the 1832 Indian Agency, once the western-most outpost of the American frontier. Experience its story: Newlyweds, John Kinzie and his wife, Juliette Kinzie, moved to the frontier so that John, employed by the U.S. government as sub-agent to the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), would live among the Native Americans at the crucial portage between the Fox and Wisconsin rivers. This historic site is also next to the Ice Age Trail and the historic Portage Canal.

Dells

“The Waterpark Capital of the World!®” This is like any good bedtime story -- folks want to read it over and over again. So, we bring you, the story of how the nation’s first indoor waterpark was created. This is a true story.

The Father of the Indoor Waterpark The roots of the indoor waterpark craze in the United States can be traced back to 1989 and a casual observation made by Stan Anderson, owner of the Polynesian Resort Hotel in Wisconsin Dells. Anderson was on a scouting trip to a Texas resort looking for ideas for new water

attractions, accompanied by his two business partners, Tom Lucke and David Kaminski. Each owned properties with indoor swimming pools, but felt the pool-thing was getting to be ho-hum. Anderson commented that one of the featured attractions at the Texas resort, called “The Water Factory,” might be a good fit for his resort, particularly with young families. It was an outdoor feature, but Anderson wondered if he could put a roof over it as a way to extend the Dells tourism season which, at that time, ran Memorial Day to Labor Day. Not long after, construction began at the Polynesian for the first indoor waterpark, with The Water Factory the main attraction. As Anderson humbly notes, “It was successful beyond our dreams.” The Polynesian was packed, even in the off season. Within a few short years, the area’s largest waterpark developments took shape.
