Ice Age Trail Snaking through 30 counties, the Ice Age Trail marks the southernmost edge of glaciers from the last Ice Age.

12,000 to 18,000 years ago, monstrous ice sheets, over two miles thick at their point of origin, stretched from northern Canada to cover much of Wisconsin and North America. Mounds of glacial material were deposited at the forward edge of the glacier, forming the terminal moraine. The Ice Age Trail is part of the National Park Service National Scenic Trail System. The Trail loosely follows the terminus of the glaciers from the last ice age. It traverses the state starting at Potawatomi State Park in Door County, runs southeast through the Kettle Moraines to Janesville, turns north going west of Madison, through Devil's Lake State Park, north to Langlade County, and then meanders west through northern forests to Interstate State Park on the St Croix National Scenic Riverway. Currently, about 600 miles out of a total of about 1100 planned miles are completed statewide. The Lodi Valley Chapter volunteers construct and maintain trails, lead hikes and field trips, educate, and assist in land stewardship. Chapter activities include full moon hikes, periodic trail improvement days, National Trails Day activities, and special interest hikes. The Legend of Susie the Duck In 1948, a country mallard made Lodi her home. She settled in the downtown area and laid her eggs in a large masonry basket full of beautiful flowers. When her eggs hatched, she drew quite a bit of attention as locals and visitors came to observe her brood. Lodi’s then police chief and his granddaughter also came to see the small fuzzy baby ducklings and their mother. The chief asked his granddaughter what she thought the mother duck’s name should be? She replied “Susie”. Susie has faithfully returned to her flower basket for years, raising many ducklings and much media attention. Through the years, many “Susies” have nested the flower basket. Each year Lodi hosts an annual “Susie the Duck Day” celebrating the famous fowl who nests in the heart of Lodi. Lodi Ag Fair Lodi is one of three cities in the state of Wisconsin to have its own fair. This free fair, which has been running for 148 years, begins on the first Thursday of July and runs through Sunday. Exhibits include livestock judging, school artwork, baking contests, and local organization display booths. There are carnival rides and games. Attractions include tractor pulls and the hugely popular demolition derby. There is also a live music beer garden.

Susie Day - August 2014 Our annual community-wide event. Head on down to Goeres and Haberman parks for food, beer, live music, a parade, kids games and so much more. Coming Soon to a Barn Near You! You’re travelling along the road in Columbia County when all at once something bright catches your eye. You slow down and are treated to the sight of a colorful quilt square on the side of a barn. You’ve just found a Columbia County Barn Quilt! Columbia County boasts a strong agricultural heritage. A new initiative --- Barn Quilts of Columbia County --- is celebrating that heritage through colorful barn quilts. This project, which is a partnership between Columbia County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE) and Columbia County UW-Extension, is engaging people of all ages from across the county. While traditional cloth quilts are usually made by assembling many different quilt squares, barn quilts are typically just one quilt square. Each barn “quilt” is actually an 8’ X 8’ quilt square pattern painted on plywood and mounted on the side of a barn or other farm structure. A committee works with people interested in having a barn quilt to help them identify a quilt square design,

decide on a location that will work best for viewing from the road (to respect the privacy of the property owner), and assist in creating and installing the quilt. The design of each barn quilt reflects the uniqueness of the person or family who hosts it on their property. Barn quilts might reflect the cultural or ethnic heritage of the person/family or have some other historical link. Sometimes the barn quilt design is chosen to represent a current aspect of the homestead. The map shown here gives the locations of the barn quilts that are currently on display across the county. From the Empire Prairie to the Mighty Mississippi, Wisconsin’s 100-mile Scenic Byway 60 follows the graceful curves of the Lower Wisconsin River. This patch of our planet sparkles, by sunny day or starry night, with the wild beauty of nature left to its own devices for thousands and thousands of years. And nowhere so apt is Heraclitus’s adage that you can’t step into the same river twice. In constant flux, the “river of a thousand isles” continuously sculpts its sandbars, shifts its channels, varies its flows, and repaints its colors, according to the whims of the weather gods. Here golden bluffs crop out of emerald hills and valleys that roll into rushing streams to the lively river. These waters beckon fishermen, canoeists, kayakers, and boaters. Here birdwatchers and botanists can go bananas while, chances are, an eagle is watching them.

As transcendent as the ancient driftless area landscape itself is the history encoded in its formations. Hundreds of effigy mound earthworks, still alive to the touch, stand today as spiritual gifts and messages from those who occupied this land in the deep past. The more recent settlements on the Byway route from Lodi to Prairie du Chien have tried to compliment rather than conflict with the pristine qualities of driftless nature. Each has its own enticing history and contemporary flavor. They offer a rich range of camping, lodging, dining, outdoor and indoor recreation, archeological pursuits, and other learning options. They welcome both the seriously energetic and those who seek serious relaxation. They invite families to experience together this special place, the magic of which has inspired a local goal: No child left inside.

The city fathers decided to seize the spotlight and host the first “Susie the Duck Festival”. That tradition of recognizing Susie and her feathered friends continues to this day. While touring Lodi be sure to stop on Main Street to visit local merchants and an area farmer’s market. Nature Areas Columbus Wetland Public Hunting Grounds 248-acre property - find it by taking Lewis Street from Columbus, which turns into old Hwy 73. The grounds are just north of Hwy 151 bridge on west side of the road. The property consists of approximately 175 acres of wetland, 60 acres of upland and 20 wooded acres.

Hampden Wetland Public Hunting Grounds 229 acre property - find it by taking Highway 60, six miles west from Columbus to Highway A, then south on A four miles to Arnold Road. The Department began acquiring land for this public hunting ground in 1966. Much of the property is marshy potholes with lowland timber.

Dekorra Wetland Public Hunting Grounds 226 acre property - find it eight miles northwest of Poynette off of Highway V just west of Interstate 90/94. The property consists of approximately 15 acres of wetland, 46 acres of upland and 165 wooded acres.

Hinkson Creek Fishery Area Hinkson Creek drains a small watershed (9 square miles) as it flows a distance of 6 miles to its junction with Rowan Creek, a tributary to the Wisconsin River. An abundance of springs throughout the stream course maintain water temperatures capable of supporting a high quality brook trout fishery. Thirty-nine mammal species including muskrat, raccoon, red fox, mink, white-tailed deer, fox and gray squirrels and cottontail rabbits. Beaver are known to inhabit the stream. The presence of 153 bird species has been documented in the area which includes the common waterfowl species, ring-necked pheasants, woodcocks and ruffed grouse. It is likely such endangered species as the bald eagle and osprey, along with the threatened red-shouldered hawk and loggerhead shrike, pass through the area.

Duck Creek Wetland Public Hunting Grounds 159 acre - find it four miles east of Wyocena on Highway G, on south side of G, section 21 town of Springvale. The property consists of approximately 100 acres of upland and 60 acres of marsh/stream. French Creek Wildlife Area Cty. Hwy. F, north of Portage, this two-county area includes 3,152 acres of open marsh wetlands, upland grass fields, lowland timber, shrub type wetlands and warm water stream habitats suitable for ducks and geese, deer, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, fur-bearing animals, sand hill cranes, herons, egrets, shorebirds and songbirds. Two man-made dikes create flowages for waterfowl and furbearing animal habitat. Some warm water fishing occurs in the flowages. Gilbraltar Rock - Lodi Rising 200 feet above the surrounding landscape, Gibraltar Rock is a flattopped butte, an outlier of the Magnesian escarpment. With a thin Platteville-Galena dolomite cap over St. Peter sandstone, the butte offers panoramic views of the Wisconsin River Valley and Lake Wisconsin. Goose Pond Sanctuary W7468 Prairie Lane, Arlington, 643 acres, waterfowl refuge and largest tall grass prairie restoration in Wisconsin Grassy Lake Wildlife Area 695 acre property - find it three miles southeast of Rio on Highway 16. Take Erdman Road or Fischer Road off from Highway 16. The property consists of approximately 380 acres of wetland, 210 acres of upland and 105 wooded acres including open water and shrub/cattail marsh wetlands, hardwood timber and grassland habitats suitable for waterfowl, squirrel, rabbit, grouse, pheasant, fur-bearing animals, sand hill cranes, herons, egrets, shorebirds, and songbirds.

MacKenzie Environmental Center Cty. Hwy CS/Q, Poynette, operated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, features native prairie, hiking trails, a native animal park with bison herd, museum and interpretive center. Mud Lake Wildlife Area 2,283 acre property - find it south of Rio 1 mile on Hwy. C, then west on Drake Road 1 mile. The property consists of approximately 1450 acres of wetland, 590 acres of upland, and 220 acres of wooded habitat. You will find a hardwood forest, grassland fields, cropland and shrub wetlands, suitable for waterfowl, deer, pheasant, grouse, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, sandhill cranes, fur-bearing animals, herons, shorebirds, and songbirds. Two man-made dikes enhance water levels of the large wetlands to improve waterfowl habitat. Paradise Marsh Wildlife Area 1,588 acre property - find it by going south of Randolph one mile on Highway 73 to Highway G. Go west on G three miles to the

Jennings Creek Wildlife Area 530 acre property - find it by heading north out of Rio on Hwy. SS 2 miles to Jennings Road, then east on Jennings less than 2 miles to Ludwig Road, then continue to Jennings Creek. The area includes cold water stream frontage, shrub wetlands hardwood forest, and conifer timberland suitable for deer, grouse, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, sandhill cranes, fur-bearing animals, songbirds and trout. Lake Wisconsin Cty- Hwy. CS, Poynette More than just a wide spot in the Wisconsin River, Lake Wisconsin is 9,000 acres of unlimited water activities, including sailing, swimming, boating, water-skiing, and canoeing. Fish taken here include sturgeon, panfish, walleye, bass, northern and lunker muskies. Accessible from a number of boatlandings, resorts and campgrounds, Lake Wisconsin is Central Wisconsin’s natural water fun center. Lodi Marsh Wildlife Area Cty. Hwy. Y, south of Lodi, 1,044 acres in Columbia and Dane counties combined, including cold water stream frontage, shrub wetlands hardwood forest, cropland and grassland fields suitable for deer, grouse, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes, songbirds and trout.

Nature Trails wildlife area. The property consists of approximately 1,270 acres of wetland, 260 acres of grasslands and 60 acres of wooded habitat. You will find warm water stream frontage with extensive cattail and shrub marsh wetlands, hardwood timber, grassland fields and cropland. Habitat is suitable for deer, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes, herons and songbirds. Park Lake, Pardeeville 330 acre lake - maximum depth of 27 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from public boat landings. Fish include Musky, Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye. Peter Helland Wildlife Area 3,543 acre property - find it six miles east of Pardeeville on County Road P. The property consists of approximately 2,700 acres of wetland, 500 acres of grassland, 240 acres of wooded habitat and some shrub and agricultural lands. Pine Island Wildlife Area 5,499-acre property - located along the

Wisconsin River southwest of Portage. The property consists of approximately 1,200 acres of wetland habitats, 1000 acres of grasslands, 1500 acres of oak/savanna habitats and 1,900 acres of wooded habitat. Includes cattail and shrub marshes, lowland hardwood, grassland fields, cropland, river islands and native prairie habitats suitable for deer, pheasant, squirrel, rabbit, turkey, grouse, ducks, geese, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes, herons and songbirds. Spring Lake, Pardeeville 27 acre lake - maximum depth of 32 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike. Springville Wildlife Area Cty. Hwys. P and SS between Pardeeville and Cambria, 2,841 acres with warm water stream frontage, extensive ditched wetlands, cattail/ shrub marsh, grassland fields, pheasant, rabbits, ducks, geese, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes, herons and songbirds. Swan Lake Wildlife Area 2,466 acre property - one mile east of Portage off of Highway P in Columbia County. The property consists of approximately 2,000 acres of wetlands, 100 acres of grassland and 366 acres of wooded habitat. The Fox River flows through the Swan Lake Wildlife Area in a northwesterly direction from Swan Lake on the east. Extensive cattail marshes, lowland aspen woodland, shrub wetlands, grassland, and a 1.5 mile dike for water level control, suitable for deer, pheasant, rabbits, ducks, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes, herons, shorebirds and songbirds.

FISHERIES IN COLUMBIA COUNTY

Hinkson Creek Fishery Near Cty. Hwy. J northwest of Poynette, 160 acres of shrub and wetland along the Hinkson Creek trout stream with brown and brook trout, deer, squirrel, grouse, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes and songbirds. Rocky Run Creek Fishery Located southwest of Wyocena between State Hwy. 22 and U.S. 51, 750 acres of cold water stream frontage, shrub wetlands, upland hardwood forest, grassland fields and some cropland. The stream provides a fishery for brown trout. Habitat is suitable for deer, grouse, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, sandhill cranes, fur-bearing animals, songbirds and limited waterfowl use. Rowan Creek Fishery From Cty. Hwys. J and CS west of Poynette, along Rowan Creek., 650 acres of cold water stream frontage, shrub wetland and lowland hardwood habitat suitable for deer, grouse,

squirrel, rabbit, sandhill cranes, fur-bearing animals, songbirds and limited waterfowl use. Wisconsin River Wisconsin Dells to Portage Running approximately 19 miles from Wisconsin Dells to Portage, the Wisconsin River is a great place to float, boat, canoe, sail or swim. Accessible from numerous public and private boat landings and launching ramps along the way, during low water periods, the river has many sand bars to lounge on and shallows to wade in. Under these conditions, canoes and small boats that can be dragged over sandbars are recommended. Fishing enthusiasts will find sturgeon, bass, panfish, northern, walleye, muskie and more in these waters.

SANCTUARY SITES IN COLUMBIA COUNTY

Goose Pond Sanctuary in Columbia County In the Town of Leeds, there are several prairies (Sue Ames, Hopkins Road, and Ankenbrandt) that are part of the larger Goose Pond Sanctuary. Erstad Prairie, next to Schoeneberg’s Marsh, is also in the town. All are open to the public. Hopkins Road Prairie A 40-acre tallgrass prairie restoration with 1.5 miles of mowed hiking trails. Off-road parking area is on Hopkins Rd. east of Goose Pond. Sue Ames Prairie Hike west from Hopkins Road Prairie parking area down the quarter-mile access lane to the trailhead. Two miles of mowed trail inside and around the edge extend through tall grass prairie on rolling terrain that provides good views to the west. Ankenbrandt Prairie Visitors can walk north on the mowed old farm lane from Kampen Road to Highways 51 and 60. This large, productive restoration features over 50 plant species on 80 acres. Park in mowed area at southwest corner of the prairie just west of Hopkins Road. Erstad Prairie A 60-acre sanctuary, with 18 acres of wetlands and 42 acres of uplands, has a hiking trail to an overview of a small wetland frequented by migrating waterfowl and marsh birds. Hike north to see the expansive 700 acres of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Waterfowl Production Area at Schoeneberg’s Marsh, a premier prairie wetland with nesting Yellow-headed Blackbirds and Black Terns. The entire parcel is open during the fall for hunting.

Arlington Poynette Wyocena Take a drive to Poynette, WI this summer. We are located two miles east of exit 115 of I90-94 at the Lake Wisconsin, Poynette interchange on CTH CS. Poynette offers great out-door recreation. Start at Savannah Oaks in beautiful Fall River and make your way through the eastern portion of Columbia County with many gentle rolling hills, woodlands and lots of wildlife to view along the Crawfish River. Starting at Goeres Park, this loop covers scenic views of Lake Wisconsin, Crystal and Fish Lakes, the Baraboo Bluffs and Gibralter Rock making for many photo opportunities. The loop follows mostly light traveled roads and includes some long hills that make for a challenging ride but a rewarding ride. Along the route you can access trails into Sauk County, the Merrimac Ferry to Devil’s Lake and the Lodi-Springfield connector to US Bike Route 30 in to Dane County.

Begin at the West Alley parking area behind City Hall. The Lodi Magnesian Cuesta’s funny name refers to the dramatic geologic transitions in this loop. The eastern half rides the top of the Arlington Prairie, dominated by rolling drumlins, while the western half drops off a dramatic escarpment known as the Magnesian Cuesta, transitioning to lowlands dominated by scattered steep bluffs. This ride also travels into Dane County.

The Portage Center for the Arts is dedicated to the cultural growth and enhancement of those living in Portage and the surrounding area, by providing a community venue for the arts. The center hosts a variety of theatrical events and art exhibits including the Performing Arts Series, the Zona Gale Young People’s Theatre and the Gale Singers. Additionally, the Drury Gallery hosts free monthly art exhibits from September through May, showcasing local and nationally recognized artists. The Portage Community Theatre Group is a group of community members dedicated to bringing theatrical performances to our community. Theatrical projects take place at many times throughout the year while helping to enhance the quality of life of residents. This group is working to make sure that everyone is sure to be touched by the performing arts. Historical Portage The Portage Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to Historic Portage. Portage is a wonderful place to grow your business, raise your family or just visit. The area offers small town charm with residential neighborhoods and growing commercial and industrial business sites, next to the beautiful Wisconsin and Fox Rivers. The historical distinction of Portage lies in its unique geographical location between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. Here, the two rivers, one flowing north to the St. Lawrence, the other south to the Mississippi, are separated by a narrow neck of land over which, for two centuries, adventurers and settlers traveling the waterway had to portage their canoes and heavy packs from one stream to another. The settlement, which grew here because of the resulting traffic, was first known as “Wau-wau-onah,” Winnebago for “carry on the shoulder.” During the French occupation, it was simply “le portage” (from porter: to carry). This was eventually Anglicized to Portage. Today, Portage boasts many outdoor recreational resources, wonderful homes, excellent schools and well established industries that provide solid employment opportunities. Both residents and visitors can relax and unwind in one of Portage’s many parks, take in the area’s beautiful scenery along the rivers or visit any of our seven historic attractions. Our historic downtown contributes to the history coming alive in Portage. You will find a variety of quaint niche stores, restaurants and specialty shops

all located next to our beautiful Portage Canal and levee walking path. This first such state proclamation celebrates the 40 year anniversary of Wisconsin’s Rustic Roads program. Currently, there are 114 designated Rustic Roads spanning more than 663 miles through 59 counties. “We encourage people to explore Wisconsin Rustic Roads, no matter what the season,” said Wisconsin DOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb. “We are proud of the program’s 40 year history and pleased to see Rustic Roads in the statewide spotlight this year.” The Wisconsin Legislature established the Rustic Roads program in 1973 to help citizens and local units of government preserve what remains of Wisconsin’s scenic, lightly traveled country roads. Unique brown and yellow signs mark the routes of all officially-designated Rustic Roads. These routes provide bikers, hikers, and motorists an opportunity to leisurely travel through some of Wisconsin’s scenic countryside. Levee Road travels through the Aldo Leopold reserve along the Wisconsin River. Motorists, bikers and hikers can see prairie grasses, wildlife, trees and march along the river’s south shore. R-69 travels along the historic Portage Canal. On one side of the road, wetland habitat harbers Sandhill cranes, Great Blue Herons and many other birds. The road leads to the historic Indian Agency house. Built in 1832, the house is open to the public. The northeast end of the road connects with the Marquette Trail where you can see the remnants of the Old Fort Winnebago Locks. The locks and canal joined the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, making travel by water possible from Green Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. Location: Columbia County.
