With the Wisconsin River just a few feet away, this park has an appropriate name of Riverside. Columbia County and some private land owners donated the land to the City of Portage in 1867.The shelter was erected in 1924 and the city slogan of “Where the North Begins” can be found on the top of the shelter.The park is 2.1 acres and is located on East Wisconsin Street.This is a wayside park with a large open shelter, picnic tables, and benches.

June 13 M adison Malone Madison Malone doesn’t shy away from any singing opportunity.The 18year-old Portage High School Senior’s first public appearance was at a fourth grade talent show.“She sang,‘Part of Your World’ from ‘The Little Mermaid,’” her father, Sean Malone said. More recently, Madison sang the Star Spangled Banner at a Mallards game. She has been recording music videos, which can be seen on YouTube. She said she is influenced by singers like
Gavin DeGraw, John Legend and Colbie Caillat Madison said, “I’ve been singing since I was 2 (years old).” She added,“I sing trendier songs, but they all tend to have meaning.” Madison has now performed in all four seasons of the Concerts at the Portage Series, as well as last year’s TravelWisconsin.com Stage at the State Fair. June 20 American Family Choir The American Family Insurance Choir was established in October 1997 at the suggestion of an employee who thought it would be nice to perform some holiday music for the office. The choir’s initial performances were during the 1997 Holiday Season when they presented concerts at American Family’s National Headquarters and the Great Lakes Regional Building, both located in Madison.
The choir also has a non-holiday repertoire and has been included in the Sun Prairie Concerts in the Park and the Dean House Back Yard concerts. A particular highlight for the choir was singing the National
Anthem at several Milwaukee Brewers games.The choir has also performed for various charitable organizations in the Madison area including United Way and the American Cancer Society.
Since then, many senior and healthcare centers throughout the DaneColumbia County area have enjoyed regular holiday performances by the choir. In addition, the choir performs annually at the Holiday Fantasy in Lights Grand Lighting ceremony at Olin-Turville Park.This past holiday season we added the American Family Children’s Hospital and UW hospitals to our performance stops and plan to visit them again this spring.
June 27 KG and the Ranger Classic Cowboy Songs,Trick Rope-spinning and Yodeling Cowboy heroes and the Old West come to life when KG and The Ranger sing classic cowboy songs, yodel in harmony and spin a lariat! Known for their harmony singing and harmony yodeling, they bring a fresh new sound to the classic songs of the Hollywood cowboys.They were the Western Music Association “Harmony Yodeling Champions” in 2005, 2002 and 1999. In 2001 the Academy of Western Artists nominated them for “Rising Stars” and “Western Music Duo/group”, and they were nominated for the WMA’s 2002
“Crescendo” award. In 2007, KG was one of five finalists for the Academy of Western Artist’s Yodeler of the Year. A husband and wife duo, Karen Gogolick and Rick Roltgen have been bringing the Old West to their Midwest home in Wisconsin since 1989.They first met while playing for a community barn dance, and brought together more than 20 years of musical experience, from folk music to barbershop, to create their present unique Western sound. July 11 Prairie Smoke Blue Grass Band The History of Prairie Smoke Prairie Smoke Bluegrass band, from Portage, has performed at festivals, coffeehouses, clubs and private events throughout south central Wisconsin.
Inspired by Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, and Ralph Stanley; Prairie Smoke plays Traditional Bluegrass as well as original material. Dan Ableman (Banjo, harmonica, vocals), Nate Paske
(Fiddle, vocals), Matt Morse (Bass, vocals), Dale Peterson (Guitar, vocals) and Gregg Steinhaus (Guitar, vocals) combine to form the Bluegrass band Prairie Smoke. Dan and Dale formed a musical friendship that began 10 years ago. With Dan’s tenor vocals and hot Banjo playing and Dale on Guitar and lead vocals, they played various venues as a duet, not unlike Flatt and Scruggs, until 1998 when Matt joined to form core of Prairie Smoke. In 2000 Gregg joined the band and brought his rhythm guitar playing, baritone vocals and exceptional song writing abilities to the group.Then in 2002 Nate was brought on board with his talent of fiddle playing to round out the sound. With their tight, hard driving sound and vocal harmonies, Prairie Smoke continues to excite the audience with their style of traditional Bluegrass as well as their original work.
July 18 Round The Bend Sherry Crownhart, Don Engelhart, Carolyn Hegeler, Fred Newmann, and Patrick Spaay, of Round the Bend, blend Bluegrass, Old-Timey, and Western Swing in captivating versions of traditional songs that evoke nostalgia, love lost and found, and barn-dancing fun. Spirited vocals, tight harmonies, inventive instrumentals
and down-home humor have delighted audiences of all ages at parties, festivals, community concerts, weddings, and senior centers.Tailoring selection of tunes to hosts’ requests, the band offers concert-style shows and loves to have a good time with audiences.

Aug 15 T he Flannels The Flannels (Colleen Murphy,Terri Schider, and Holly Powers), have been friends, confidantes, and “sisters” for over 25
years. The Flannels have performed for a variety of audiences and have gotten rave reviews with their repertoire of swing, comic,
and standard songs. Mike Powers and Joel Engelland started performing together in the early 70’s in the Wisconsin Dells at The
Saloon and Fort Dells and have since performed with several groups around the area. Audiences keep coming back to hear the excellence in performance and musical style these 2 gentlemen bring to the stage. Over the years, these 5 talented performers have gotten together to bring sold out shows to the Zona Gale Theatre and most recently, to the Portage Center for the Arts to benefit the River Haven Homeless Shelter.They are extremely pleased to be working together again.
