BARABOO/WEST BARABOO The City of Baraboo is located in the south central part of Wisconsin 8 miles from I-90/94, within Sauk County. It is 45 miles northwest of Madison, located along USH 12 and STHs 33, 136, 113, 123, approximately midway between Minneapolis and Chicago. Situated between Devil's Lake State Park and the Wisconsin Dells, home of Circus World Museum. Baraboo is the destination for thousands of tourists each year. West Baraboo is a vibrant village located along USH 12 and adjacent to the City of Baraboo in south central Wisconsin. Traffic counts at the intersection of USH 12 and STH 33 in the heart of West Baraboo are the highest in the area. All traffic heading to the Wisconsin Dells area on USH 12 passes through West Baraboo. PLAIN The Village of Plain is located in the south central part of Wisconsin along STH 23, within Sauk County. It is 45 miles northwest of Madison; 7 miles north of STH 14; 19 miles south of STH 33; and 18 miles west of USH 12, approximately midway between Minneapolis and Chicago. REEDSBURG The City of Reedsburg is located in the south central part of Wisconsin along STH 33 and 23, within Sauk County. It is 60 miles northwest of Madison and is 15 miles west of Interstate 90/94, approximately midway between Minneapolis and Chicago. SPRING GREEN The Village of Spring Green is located in the south central part of Wisconsin along USH 14, and STHs 23 & 60, within Sauk County. It is 40 miles northwest of Madison, approximately midway between Minneapolis and Chicago. LAKE DELTON/WISCONSIN DELLS Lake Delton is located in south central Wisconsin adjacent to I-90/94 and USH 12 in the Northeast corner of Sauk County. It is 55 miles Northwest of Madison and approximately midway between Minneapolis and Chicago. Lake Delton and the adjacent City of Wisconsin Dells make up the area known as Wisconsin Dells. SAUK PRAIRIE RIVERWAY Situated at the entrance of Sauk County, the Sauk Prairie area serves as a gateway to the lower Wisconsin River Valley and Baraboo Bluffs. The area is made of the Sauk City, Prairie du Sac, Merrimac, Roxbury, Leland, Witwen, Denzer, and Black Hawk communities. Where Art and Nature Meet. Spring Green and the River Valley area are special. Somehow, this land escaped last great Ice Age, as well as the one before that. What you see here, and nowhere else in the Upper Midwest, is a landscape sculpted at least a half million years earlier than anything else around it. Spring Green was founded in 1857 by Welsh, English, Norwegian and German immigrants whose main industries were dairy and produce farms, lumbering, and cheese production. Spring Green Preserve Located off Jones Road, two miles from Spring Green, the Spring Green Preserve has been called the “Wisconsin Desert,” with a variety of cacti, sand dunes and dry grasses. It is an area where forest meets bluff and bluff levels off into plains and dunes. The preserve’s self-guided trail allows you to learn as you go. At the trailhead, you will find a pamphlet containing blocks of information corresponding to each of a series of number markers along the trail.

From the Empire Prairie to the Mighty Mississippi, Wisconsin’s 100-mile Scenic Byway 60 follows the graceful curves of the Lower Wisconsin River. This patch of our planet sparkles, by sunny day or starry night, with the wild beauty of nature left to its own devices for thousands and thousands of years. And nowhere so apt is Heraclitus’s adage that you can’t step into the same river twice. In constant flux, the “river of a thousand isles” continuously sculpts its sandbars, shifts its channels, varies its flows, and repaints its colors, according to the whims
of the weather gods. Here golden bluffs crop out of emerald hills and valleys that roll into rushing streams to the lively river. These waters beckon fishermen, canoeists, kayakers, and boaters. Here birdwatchers and botanists can go bananas while, chances are, an eagle is watching them. As transcendent as the ancient driftless area landscape itself is the history encoded in its formations. Hundreds of effigy mound earthworks, still alive to the touch, stand today as spiritual gifts and messages
from those who occupied this land in the deep past. The more recent settlements on the Byway route from Lodi to Prairie du Chien have tried to complement rather than conflict with the pristine qualities of driftless Nature. ice age trail Snaking through 30 counties, the Ice Age Trail marks the southernmost edge of glaciers from the last Ice Age.
About 12,000 to 18,000 years ago, monstrous ice sheets, over two miles thick at their point of origin, stretched from northern Canada to cover much of Wisconsin and North America. Mounds of glacial material were deposited at the forward edge of the glacier, forming the terminal moraine. The Ice Age Trail is part of the National Park Service National Scenic Trail System. The Trail loosely follows the terminus of the glaciers from the last ice age. It traverses the state starting at Potawatomi State Park in Door County, runs southeast through the Kettle Moraines to Janesville, turns north going west of Madison, through Devil's Lake State Park, north to Langlade County, and then meanders west through northern forests to Interstate State Park on the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Currently, about 600 miles out of a total of about 1100 planned miles are completed statewide. The Lodi Valley Chapter volunteers construct and maintain trails, lead hikes and field trips, educate, and assist in land stewardship. Chapter activities include full moon hikes, periodic trail improvement days, National Trails Day activities, and special interest hikes. LAKE WISCONSIN Wisconsin means dark waters in a Native American language. The dark water of the Wisconsin River and Lake Wisconsin comes from the very dark roots of the Tamarack trees which line its banks in the northern part of the state and bleed a natural dye into the river. Many varieties of fish thrive in these waters, making Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River a fisherman’s paradise. The 9,500 acre lake has 57 miles of shoreline, and the lake and river have more than 18 miles of navigable waterway with a depth that varies to a maximum of 40 feet. Boaters love to dock at the many sand bars for a swim, picnic or even to camp overnight. Tourists from all over the world come here to relax and enjoy this beautiful area. Once a favorite hunting and fishing ground of the early tribes, it is now a popular tourist destination for camping and water sports, as well as, more leisurely activities and family adventures. The Merrimac Ferry, named “Colsac” because it bridges Columbia and Sauk counties, is a highlight to experience and the only free ferry in the state. It crosses the Wisconsin River from Highway 113 in Merrimac south to the junction of Highways 188 and 113 just north of Lodi. Trip time is 10 minutes, and 15 cars (trailers too) can cross at one time. It runs 24 hours a day during the months the lake is not frozen. Top it off with a stop at a nearby restaurant or ice cream stand.

Lake Wisconsin is part of the Wisconsin River system created by the dam in Prairie du Sac. The dam began construction in 1915 and was completed sometime in 1924. From a favorite hunting and fishing ground of the early Indian tribes in the area, it is now a popular tourist destination for boating, fishing, camping, hunting and all family adventures. The area has campgrounds, resorts, motels, taverns, and fine dining to entice almost any vacationer. Every season is spectacular and will provide memories for a lifetime. The Legend of Susie the Duck... A long time ago, (1948) a country mallard made Lodi her home. She settled in the downtown area and laid her eggs in a large masonry basket full of beautiful flowers. When her eggs hatched, she drew quite a bit of attention as locals and visitors came to observe her brood. Lodi's then police chief and his granddaughter also came to see the small fuzzy baby ducklings and their mother. The chief asked his granddaughter what she thought the mother duck's name should be? She replied "Susie". Susie has faithfully returned to her flower basket for years, raising many ducklings and much media attention. Through the years, many "Susies’" have nested in the flower basket. Each year Lodi hosts an annual "Susie the Duck Day" celebrating the famous fowl who nests in the heart of Lodi.

Russian-born Igor and Ukrainian wife Tatiana dazzle in their high-energy juggling act. Their son George brings his astonishing contortion and hand-balancing act perched high atop five constantly moving cylinders; a phenomenal display of acrobatic skill and daring. The Aristov Family has appeared throughout the world; even with The Rolling Stones. Heidi Herriott, a third-generation American circus entertainer and animal trainer, brings her celebrated equestrian act to the center ring. Herriott shares the spotlight with daughter Cassidy, an aerialist who gracefully performs high above the ring and stuns audiences with her slide for life in which she shoots across a metal wire suspended 50 feet above the Baraboo River, hanging only by her neck. Ninth-generation circus performer David Rosaire and family present the world’s greatest dog act, featuring tiny Pekinese dogs, a Great Dane, a trouble making mutt and Vanna, the scene-stealing baboon. The Rosaire family has appeared at the London Palladium, Cirque D’Hiver in Paris, Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and in a Command Performance before the King and Queen of Sweden. Tommy Liebel traces his Hungarian circus roots back 300 years. This summer, Liebel’s talented teens appear with Tiny the African elephant, and also in a new balancing ladder act. Rounding out the big top circus are clowns Michelle Musser and Nathan Holguin who perfected
their zany brand of slapstick traveling with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. This facility is recognized as the world’s premier circus history institution and strives to keep the glamour of one of America’s favorite pastimes alive through the preservation of circus history, live circus performances, and educational outreach programs, including daily Big Top shows. Open to the public since 1959, Circus World is home to several structures belonging to the original Ringling Brothers Circus and is considered a National Historic Landmark. New exhibits, programs and shows are added each year to Circus World, so it’s worth another visit! Baraboo boasts a historic downtown courthouse square
surrounded by unique shops and restaurants which are a destination in themselves. Also downtown is the magnificently designed Al. Ringling Theatre. REEDSBURG The 400 State Trail is part of the 101 mile State Trail System (Bike4Trails) from Reedsburg to Trempealeau, linking with the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, and from there to the LaCrosse River State Trail and the Great River State Trail to the Marshland north of Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge. In June of 1993, the 400 State Trail was officially opened. It was developed on an abandoned Chicago-Northwestern Railroad bed and was named for the Chicago - Northwestern passenger train that traveled the 400 miles between Chicago and Minneapolis/ St. Paul in 400 minutes. Packed limestone screenings and bridges with planked floors provide a smooth bike riding surface. Wetlands, sandstone bluffs, rolling croplands and pastures are just a few of the sights that visitors will enjoy on the 400 trail as it repeatedly criss crosses the
Baraboo River. The entire length of the trail follows along the river valley. Snowmobiles use the trail in the winter months. A unique feature of the 400 trail is a 7 mile horse trail which parallels the bike trail between Wonewoc and LaValle. Just west across the Baraboo River from downtown Reedsburg, James W. Babb registered his claim in 1848. He cultivated some of the prairie, used the timber to build a log house, and thus became the first white man to become a permanent resident in this area. Having established himself here, he left his meager possessions in the care of the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) Indians who resided in this area, and returned to Ohio to bring other members of his family here. On the west end of the bridge on Main Street David C. Reed, hearing of deposits is a marker recognizing the ford of iron and copper in the area, which the Babb family and the soon followed. He built a saw and Indians used to cross the river. grist mill on the river, and five

shanties made of wood to house the laborers. Their shanties became known as Shanty Row and stood approximately where Main Street is today. Mr. Reed has been credited for starting the village, thus the name of Reedsburgh (Reedsburg) was given to the settlement. Because the business buildings were mostly constructed of wood, they were easily destroyed by fire. Dating from the late 1800’s, new buildings replaced wooden structures. Most of these buildings stand today on Main Street, much as they were when originally constructed. The Norman Rockwell Exhibit, the Reedsburg Historical Society and Pioneer Log Village are just some of the many lovely area attractions. AMISH COUNTRY The Amish communities of Wisconsin are centered in three general areas: in the northeastern part of the state south and east of the city of Eau Claire; in the southeast region stretching from Whitewater down to Beloit; and in the south-central region, including our very own counties of Columbia, Green Lake, Marquette and Sauk. Generally, all the Amish in south-central Wisconsin are Old Order Amish, with no tractors in the fields, few telephones except at an occasional shop or along a lonely lane, hook-and-eye closures on clothing instead of buttons, and small one-room schoolhouses. One can find several Amish businesses, or businesses supporting Amish heritage, along many routes in the area. Most of these roads are very old and follow the "lay of the land", and were constructed using routes in existence in the 1700's and 1800's. Once into the interior of Amish country, it is impossible to get anywhere quickly! Please slow down and show courtesy to horse-drawn wagons and buggies – we want everyone to remain safe. Besides, scenery is always more enjoyable when viewed at a slower pace. You will wind along bluff tops, down alongside rushing creeks and through uplands dotted with farms and country churches. The lodging and food choices here are fewer but perfectly fine; ranging from country inns to family motels to cabins. Enjoy a quiet drive through Amish country and discover a simpler time and an area rich in heritage.
