There is water skiing, boating and fishing on Beaver Dam Lake, Wisconsin’s 15th largest lake with 6,542 square acres.

Beaver Dam Raceway provides racing enthusiasts with exciting dirt track racing action that includes sprint cars, midgets, late models and more. Racing is held every Saturday, May through October, beginning at 6:30 PM.

Dodge County Fair Every August

The Dodge County Fairgrounds, just east of Beaver Dam, is home to the Dodge County Fair which is held the third week of August.

Free water ski shows provided by the Beaverland MustSkis ski team, who perform just off Tahoe Park on Beaver Dam Lake most Sunday evenings and some Friday nights from the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend to the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

History of Dodge County More than 10,000 years ago, small bands of people entered what is now Dodge County on the edge of the receding glacier. As hunters and gathers, early native Americans followed and hunted herds of large animals and gathered food stuffs. The river systems from the south were used by early inhabitants to reach the wildlife and other resources the county provided in abundance. Numerous sites within the county show evidence of the early inhabitants including stone tools, campsites and settlements, burial and effigy mounds, garden plots and paintings and carvings on rock outcrops and stones.

The first white settlers were drawn for reasons of bountiful agricultural lands, with wheat, corn, oats, potatoes and apples being the primary crops. Wheat growing was later replaced with dairying. Before mass settlement and agricultural pursuits, Dodge County was covered mainly with forests, wetlands, prairie and oak savannas.

Dodge County was created in 1836 and named in honor of Henry Dodge, then territorial governor of Wisconsin. The Town

of Victory was chosen as the County Seat.

The Town of Victory was later renamed City of Juneau after Paul Juneau, the son of Solomon Juneau, founder of Milwaukee.

In 1845 iron ore was discovered in Mayville and an iron ore works operated here for several decades until competition from mines in the Lake Superior region closed them. Sawmills and gristmills were widely distributed over Dodge County in the 1870's.

Historical Markers

In 1875, John Jossie, came from Switzerland, developed the variety of cheese known as “Brick”, and opened the first factory in the United States to produce brick cheese. The factory operated in Watertown until 1943.

Historical Markers throughout Dodge County have been established by citizens of the county in an attempt to preserve elements of local history. There are eight historical markers established in the County.

Dodge is a leading county in the production of cheese, barley, alfalfa, hay and peas for canning. Industries include the manufacture of wood products, shoes, metal products, lawn care equipment, magazines, stainless steel equipment and ice fishing equipment.

The Schauer Center is the Kettle Moraine’s regional center for the arts—staging professional touring performances through its Performing Arts Series as well as performances by schools and its resident groups.

The Schauer Center also offers classes in the visual and performing arts for all ages.

The Seippel Homestead and Center for the Arts, managed by the Beaver Dam Area Arts Association, features six exhibits each year, including a wildlife and landscape exhibit, an area high school art exhibit, a Holiday Gift Gallery, and several other major exhibits of national, state and area artists’ works. The BDAAA offers a year-round gift shop, classes, clubs, and special programs and events.

The BDACT building, formerly the First Baptist Church, provides an ideal intimate theater with excellent acoustics and two floors of work, storage, and performance space. In recent years, to accommodate our increasingly larger audiences, we present our summer musicals at the state-of-the art Beaver Dam High School auditorium.

The Town of Beaver Dam is located on the west half of the County. The Town of Beaver Dam and the City of Beaver Dam share each other’s mutual history. Beaver Dam Lake is located in the Town. The first settlement was made in 1841 by Thomas Mackie. James Brower had named the community for the large population of beaver who built dams on several little streams emptying into the river.

Lakes Beaver Dam Lake Beaver Dam Lake is the largest lake in Dodge County and the 16th largest in Wisconsin. It was formed in 1842 when a 10 foot dam was constructed on the Beaver Dam River to provide water power. The City of Beaver Dam is located on the southeast shore. Beaver Dam Lake covers approximately 6,600 acres, is 14 miles long, and has over 41 miles of shoreline. It is especially well suited for speedboating, sailing and provides excellent summer and winter fishing for northern pike, walleye, bass, catfish, bullhead, and a variety of panfish. Besides fishing, the lake is perfect for water-skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating and hunting. The city maintains a half a dozen lakeside parks, among which there are several with fishing piers and boat ramps. Picnic facilities for the general public are plentiful, as well as shoreline areas to enjoy the beauty of the changing seasons.

Tahoe Park on Beaver Dam Lake is home to Beaver Dam's Lake Days celebration and the Beaverland Must-Ski's Water Show. No matter the season, there is always something to do on Beaver Dam Lake.

Lake Size: 6,542 Acres Maximum Depth: 11 Ft.

Sinissippi Lake Sinissippi Lake was formed by a 12 foot dam, originally erected in 1845, which flooded a marshy valley of the Rock River. The fishery consists mainly of carp, bullheads, and northern pike. A large number of waterfowl visit the lake in the spring. Sinissippi Lake is a great place to boat and water ski. The Sinissippi Ski Club founded in 1978 offers "Learn to Ski" programs every summer to teach beginning skiers. The Ski Club also performs together on the lake. Quiet boaters can explore the lake's eight islands including Anthony and Radloff Islands both of

which have wooded camping and Campers Island, the largest island on the lake. There is also hunting nearby and the bird watching is unsurpassed. Bald eagles, sandhill cranes, herons, and white pelicans all frequent the lake.

Lake Size: 2,855 Acres Maximum Depth: 11 Ft.

Fox Lake Fox Lake was originally a smaller natural lake formed by glacial activity. In 1845 it was greatly increased in size and depth by construction of an 11 foot dam on Mill Creek.

The City of Fox Lake is located on the southeast shore of the lake where city parkland with a boat landing provides recreational access. A town park with a boat landing provides access on the north side of the lake.

Fox Lake is heavily used for boating, water skiing, and fishing. Fox Lake drains toward Beaver Dam Lake via Mill Creek.

Lake Size: 2,625 Acres Maximum Depth: 22 Ft.

Lake Emily Lake Emily is a shallow, fertile lake located in the extreme northwest corner of Dodge County. The lake is principally fed by seepage, springs and runoff. A four-foot dam assists in maintaining the water levels. The lake provides a quality fishery primarily of perch, bluegills, largemouth bass, and northern pike and receives heavy usage year round. Much

of the lakeshore is developed with cottages and homes, except for the west side which is still undeveloped. A town-owned boat landing provides good fishing and boating access on the southern end of the lake.

Lake Size: 268 Acres Maximum Depth: 17 Ft.

Lost Lake Lost Lake is located in west-central Dodge County. The lake is mainly seepage fed and drains to Beaver Dam Lake. The lake is popular for fishing and hunting although freeze out conditions limit the fishery. Much of the shoreline consists of marshy areas. Boat ramps exist on the north and south sides of the lake as extensions of the town roads.

During the last Ice Age, which ended about 10,000 years ago, a massive ice sheet covered the entire county. The county’s topography was shaped by the advance and retreat of this ice mass. Glacial debris was deposited as ground moraine and other glacial formations, varying in thickness throughout the county from 100 to 300 feet in depth. There is approximately 400 feet of elevation change with the highest points reaching 1,200 feet above sea level in the northeast, to 800 feet above sea level in the southwestern portions of the county. The two most prominent topographic features in the county include the very flat, marsh areas, such as the Horicon Marsh, and the Niagara Escarpment, which rises 190 feet in some areas.

Derge Park is located 5 minutes northwest of the City of Beaver Dam, is on the west-central shore of Beaver Dam Lake. The 6,600 acre lake provides excellent ďŹ shing and is popular for sailing, speed boating, and water skiing. Besides providing access to Beaver Dam Lake with a boat launch, piers and over 500 feet of shoreline, Derge Park contains 25 campsites with 30 amp electric hookups and asphalt pads, picnic shelters, a shower/restroom building and a dump station. Derge Park is an excellent place to hold group campouts and picnics, family reunions and other group events and an ideal location for hunters and ďŹ shermen seeking access to Beaver Dam Lake. A system of paved pathways makes Derge Park facilities handicap accessible.

Astico Park consists of developed and natural areas on the historic Danville Mill Pond of the CrawďŹ sh River about 3 miles east of the City of Columbus in the southwestern part of Dodge County. The park is split by the river and is connected by the relocated historic Ninabuck and ScoďŹ eld Bridges. The main park entrance is just south of Hwy 60 at N3620 Hwy TT. The park features 70 river’s edge and upland campsites including riverside campsites with 50 amp service available, Astico Castle Playground, a restroom/shower facility, a dump station, picnic areas and shelters, shoreline and wooded hiking trails, large open play ďŹ elds and an expansive river shoreline which provides good canoeing and ďŹ shing opportunities in a scenic setting. Canoe launch and canoe/kayak rentals available. The park is open year round with limited access in winter depending on conditions. Primitive camping in winter is subject to site accessibility.

Ledge Park lies along the Niagara Escarpment, a natural rock ledge which divides the park into upper and lower areas and provides a breathtaking overlook of the famous Horicon Marsh and the surrounding countryside. The upper portion is heavily wooded and offers expansive picnicking areas, group shelter, hiking trails, 46 campsites, a restroom/shower facility, a dump station and the Fort Ledge Playground.

The lower portion also offers a group shelter, picnic areas, hiking trails, a wildlife pond and play equipment.

The hiking trails wind along the ledge, between and over interesting and unique rock formations and through heavily wooded areas. Ledge Park is located in the north central part of Dodge County, between Horicon and Mayville, just off of Hwy TW. Ledge Park is a convenient place to stay while exploring the Horicon Marsh, the Wild Goose State Trail, the Horicon Aquatic Center or the many other attractions in Dodge County.

Harnischfeger Park Harnischfeger Park is the largest Dodge County Park. The park is located along the Rock River in the Town of Lebanon about one mile west of the unincorporated community of Ashippun and eight miles east of Watertown. A variety of terrain, vegetation and facilities provide park visitors with a multitude of recreational opportunities in a scenic setting. The clubhouse and two open pavilions offer excellent places to hold group functions, such as family reunions, company picnics, graduation parties and weddings.

Camping is available with nine sites and a group site. Active and passive recreation abound with a few miles of hiking, horseback riding and crosscountry skiing trails, ďŹ shing areas, mini-golf course, disc golf course, volleyball courts, basketball court, horseshoe pits, baseball ďŹ eld, playgrounds, an 800’ wetland boardwalk trail and a canoe launch with canoe and kayak rentals available. The park is open year round with limited access to some facilities in winter depending on conditions. Primitive camping in winter is subject to site accessibility.

Nitschke Mounds Park Nitschke Mounds Park is located near the center of Dodge County adjacent to the Wild Goose State Trail and just west of the Horicon Marsh. The property contains about 39 preserved animal efďŹ gy, conical and linear mounds believed to have been constructed around 800AD - 1100AD. The mounds represent one of the best surviving examples of the Mound Builders culture that once occupied the Dodge County area. A one mile wood chipped trail with interpretive signs is available around the mounds and through the park

The EfďŹ gy Mound Building culture is distinguished most by the existence of numerous mounds. Many of these mounds were shaped to resemble birds and mammals. The Nitschke Mound group also contains linear and conical (round) shaped mounds.

The EfďŹ gy Mound Builders were located primarily in southern Wisconsin and adjacent areas of Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota.

The EfďŹ gy Mound Builders adopted the use of the bow and arrow, stone tools and also grew corn. Pottery was also an important part of their culture. A garden bed was also identiďŹ ed on the property near the springs. A possible pre-historic encampment or village site is believed to have been associated with the garden beds.

The mounds were constructed for a variety of purposes. Many were constructed for burial purposes while others were built to represent religious spirits or the supernatural world. Some shapes may be linked to various clans, used as symbols, travel guides or resource markers.

Trails The “club-owned” trails tend to serve more of the local users often connecting the county trails and population areas with food, service and overnight facilities. The county trails should and typically do provide higher capacity trails linking other Counties in a regional network of predominately north-south and east-west trails.

with steep side slopes, wet crossings and near highways and roads. The trail surface is grass, dirt and wood chips and winds through wooded and open areas in the right-of-way of the Wild Goose Trail. Horses are not allowed on the limestone-surfaced trail except at designated horse trail crossings.

Horseback Riding Auto Tours The glaciers that once covered Dodge County have sculpted a landscape ideal for auto touring. Several scenic overlooks around the Horicon Marsh allow you to view the wetland’s wildlife.

Follow the brown signs that mark the route of the Horicon Marsh Parkway, a 50-mile auto tour that encircles the Horicon Marsh and follows state and county highways through Burnett, Kekoskee, Horicon, Mayville and Waupun. The Parkway is easily accessible from U.S. Highway 151 or State Highway 41 by following State Highway 33 to access the south end of the Parkway or Highway 49 to access the north end of the Parkway.

Dodge County welcomes horseback riding on a separate 14-mile pathway along the Wild Goose State Trail between Highway 60 and Pautsch Road (about four miles north of Burnett). Trail terrain is generally easy riding, although special caution is necessary in areas Fish & Wildlife Service

Snowmobile enthusiasts will find an interconnected system of more than 320 miles of groomed county snowmobile trails that traverse farm fields, woodlots, lowlands and the Wild Goose State Trail, with another 180 miles of unfunded “club-owned” trails available for use within the County. . Trails provide easy access to trail systems in neighboring counties. The majority of trails cross private lands, where the use of the land is donated or yearly easement payments are made. The funded trails are under the jurisdiction of Dodge County with actual maintenance, development and grooming contracted out to the Dodge County Association of Snowmobile Clubs. Twenty separate snowmobile clubs work on maintaining and grooming the county trail system each winter.

Dodge County ATV Trail Wild Goose State Trail

ATV Trails Dodge County opens 20 miles of ATV trails from December 1 through March 31. Riding is only permitted during that time when the County has officially declared the trail open. The ATV trail can be opened if there is sufficient ground freeze or snowbase to prevent damage to the trail surface.

The trails are primarily located on the surfaced areas of Wild Goose State Trail and the designated ATV trail routes through Burnett and East Waupun. The ATV trail runs from the parking lot at Hwy. 60 north to Hwy. 49.

John Thiel and Nicolas Simon first surveyed the area that would become Hartford in 1843. They returned in 1844 with James and Charles Rossman to build a dam across rapids in the Rubicon River. The Town of Williamstown is set in the east central part of the County. The first settlers were Alvin and William Foster and Chester May who arrived here in 1845 to select a site for their mills and begin work on the saw mills and the dam.

It is believed the township was named for William Foster.

Neosho The Village of Neosho is located in the Town of Rubicon. The Town of Rubicon is set in the southeastern corner of the County. When a post office was established outside the present village it was called Upton. Later it was moved to the village and the name changed. A Yankee school teacher from New York who had come the Isle of Man, is said to have chosen the name from the Rubicon River Caesar crossed in 49 BC.

The Town of Theresa is located in the northeast side of the County.

Founded by Solomon Juneau, founder of Milwaukee who often traveled the Military Road from Milwaukee to Green Bay as a trader for American Fur Company. He was intrigued with the beauty of the area, especially a site on a hill overlooking the Rock River where he built his home and trading post drawing other settlers. He bought land from the government, dammed the river and erected a sawmill and gristmill. The village was platted in 1848 and named after Juneau's mother-Theresa.

The City of Juneau is located in the Town of Oak Grove in the center of the County. Major Pratt built the first log cabin here in 1841. Later he built an inn called the Oak Grove House which burned in 1935. Fairfield was the first name of the village, but there was already another Fairfield in the State. Oak Grove was chosen because there were no oak trees at all in the neighborhood.

Horicon Marsh Area EXPERIENCE IT The Horicon Marsh Parkway is a 50-mile auto tour route that follows state and county roadways around the marsh, passing through or near many local communities.

There are also roads, hiking and biking trails throughout the property, and a canoe trail accessing the waters of the marsh. The Horicon Marsh International Education Center focuses on wetland and wildlife topics that explain the natural relationships that exist at the 32,000-acre property.

HORICON MARSH HORICON MARSH IS THE LARGEST FRESHWATER CATTAIL MARSH IN THE UNITED STATES WITH OVER 33,000 ACRES OF WETLANDS. Located in southeast Wisconsin, this vast wetland is only one hour drive from Milwaukee and Madison. While this marsh is renown for its migrant flocks of Canada geese, it is also home to more than 300 kinds of birds which have been sighted over the years.

Due to its importance to wildlife, Horicon Marsh has been designated as a "Wetland of International Importance" and a "Globally Important Bird Area." Horicon Marsh is both a state wildlife area and national wildlife refuge. The Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area comprises about 1/3 of the

marsh while the northern 2/3’s is a part of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge.

Within the marsh there are hiking and biking trails, driving roads and trails, a floating boardwalk and canoe trails. Opportunities for recreation at the marsh include birding, photography, hiking, hunting, canoeing, site seeing, fishing, and bicycling. Visitors should check with either the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Office and Visitor Center or at the Horicon Marsh International Education Center for maps and information about the marsh to see what areas are open to the public. There are a variety of restrictions on the marsh in order to preserve and protect wildlife so please be sure to check with the corresponding agency.

The Horicon Marsh has a unique and important story to tell. The geologic features of the area, created by our last ice age, were instrumental in providing resources for wildlife and humans alike. The human history of the Horicon Mash is rich with culture and story, however is one of tragedy and restoration. The wildlife present today at the Horicon Marsh is the result of geologic and human activities, including modern-day wildlife management. To view a movie about the history of the marsh, visitors can visit the Horicon Marsh International Education Center on Hwy 28 between Horicon and Mayville.

The Horicon Marsh International Education Center opened to the public in spring 2009 with the goal of providing a world-class visitor center on the Horicon Marsh and a facility for conducting the wildlife education program. The Education Center is a $4.8 million project with most of the major components having been completed. Work continues on the development of landscaping, and construction of a multi-million dollar exhibit hall with state of the art displays.

These exhibits will provide a wide range of learning opportunities. A large portion of the lower level, comprising a 3,500-square foot area, currently remains undeveloped, but will house the exhibit hall with museum-style displays. Work on this major component is expected to begin in 2012.

The Education Center focuses on wetland and wildlife program topics to help visitors understand the delicate natural relationships that exist at this 33,000 acre marsh. The Education Center is a 25,000 square foot facility located off Highway 28 between the cities of Horicon and Mayville. It features an auditorium and high-tech audio/visual center with seating for 120 persons, two classrooms, gift shop, large public viewing area with a spectacular view of Horicon Marsh, wildlife displays, and many other visitor amenities.

Area information is available at the Education Center which is open seven days a week.

This facility serves as both a destination and gateway for visitors to Horicon Marsh as well as providing for year-round education opportunities. More than 500,000 people annually visit the marsh to observe wildlife in a natural setting, creating a huge demand for interpretive services. Public naturalist talks are given throughout the year and are open to the public. These talks focus on a variety of topics related to the geology, history, wildlife and management of Horicon Marsh.

Monthly lecture series are also presented on a wide array of wildlife and environmental topics. Other educational and special events include "Movies at the Marsh", art exhibits, school field trips, summer camps for youth, a nestbox seminar, The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival and much more. The Horicon Marsh International Education Center serves as a focal point for Horicon Marsh, one of the most renowned and recognized wetlands in Wisconsin and the United States. Horicon Marsh has been nameed one of the “seven wonders of Wisconsin”.

Visit Horicon Marsh!

Fall is well known for the mass migration of birds (and visitors!) to the marsh - Canada Geese, as well as thousands of ducks of many different species – mallards, wood ducks, pintails, wigeon, redheads, bufflehead, and ruddy ducks; as well as impressive numbers of staging sandhill cranes. Opportunities also exist to view whooping cranes as reintroduction efforts were expanded in the fall of 2011 to include a Direct Autumn Release (DAR) of 8 chicks on the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. These chicks are trained by crane-costumed biologists but are left to freely migrate on their own and DO NOT follow an ultralight aircraft south during migration.

Refuge staff, volunteers and visitors hope to see these juveniles return to the refuge in 2012 and are eagerly anticipating the next generation of DAR chicks to be released on the refuge. Although closed for waterfowl hunting, the refuge is open for deer and small game hunting seasons in the fall. Many educational programs and events are held marsh-wide throughout the season.

HORICON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Wildlife Established as breeding habitat for the redhead duck, Horicon National Wildlife Refuge is a home to many species of wildlife including over 300 resident and migratory bird species as well as muskrats, red foxes, coyotes, turtles, frogs, bats, dragonflies, fish and much more.

Many Seasons of Natural Beauty

Spring marks the return of mallard ducks, coots, herons, egrets, sandhill cranes, purple martins, warblers, and numerous others. A “chorus” of frogs is sure to be heard throughout the marsh signaling that warmer weather is here. The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival is held annually in May and offers many opportunities to view and photograph spring migrants and resident wildlife.

Summer brings nesting season and warmer weather for hiking

Winter is characterized as a frozen but peaceful time on the marsh

and bicycling around the marsh to view an array of species with their young. American white pelicans nest abundantly on the refuge during the summer and may be seen feeding in large groups – “herding” fish into shallower water for easier dining. Several fishing piers are also available at the refuge and make great places to spend relaxing summer afternoons.

VISITOR FACILITIES Although much of the refuge is closed to the public during the warmer seasons to provide critical habitat for wildlife, there are many facilities available at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge to make your visit more enjoyable.

Horicon “TernPike” Auto Tour – Accessed from State Hwy 49 just east of the city of Waupun – open daily year round conditions permitting. Paved driving route (3 miles) and three hiking trails that offer scenic views of the Rock River and prairie and forest habitats along with a floating boardwalk and bicycling and hiking access to the Wild Goose State Trail.

Access is limited to the road only-adjacent dikes are closed. Parking located near fishing platform. Use pull-offs for wildlife viewing/photography.

Peachy, Ledge, and Main Dike Roads – Designated locations for bank fishing/piers.

Anglers may find carp, perch, pike and many other species at these locations.

The visitor center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. year-round, with the exception of federal holidays, and will be open Saturday May 12 and Sunday May 13 during the Horicon Marsh Bird Festival. The visitor center is also open weekends during the fall bird migration from September 8 through November 4, Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. You may also call the office at 920-387-2658 and follow the prompts for information on current waterfowl numbers or tune in the 1610 AM radio station while at the marsh for visitor information.
