MESSAGE
Mr Baey Yam Keng Sponsor Volunteers Engagement & Development Prgoramme
Dear Volunteers
At our last Volunteers’ Day in 2021, we were constrained by the prevailing COVID-19 restrictions and had to hold a smaller-scale ceremony This year, we are delighted that we can hold our biennial Volunteers’ Day physically and invite more volunteers to join us on this special day as we celebrate the spirit of volunteerism
Volunteers’ Day holds a significant purpose of honouring and appreciating your unwavering dedication and selfless contributions. Your invaluable partnership and support allows CDAC to work towards our social mission – To nurture and develop the potential of the Chinese Community in contributing to the continued success of multiracial Singapore With the collective efforts of our volunteers, we are able to carry out our meaningful work with greater reach.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest and heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who has given your time and effort to make a positive difference in the community Thank you for your selfless acts of kindness and your passion to serve Never underestimate your role as a volunteer. In your own ways, you have been a pillar of strength, a ray of sunshine, and a beacon of hope to our beneficiaries Take a moment to give yourself a pat on the shoulder for the good work done!
Moving forward, CDAC will be stepping up its efforts to promote social mobility and has embarked on new programmes such as long-term mentoring, play- and activity-based learning. To provide deepened support, we need more people to step forward to volunteer. I would like to encourage you to invite your friends and family to be a part of this meaningful and enriching endeavour. Everyone can contribute in his or her own unique way to make a positive change through volunteering.
As our slogan suggests: “A Little From All, Together Is More”, let us ignite the spirit of volunteerism on our little red dot Together, we can become agents of change in building a more resilient and compassionate society where kindness knows no boundaries!

VOLUNTEER COMMENDATION AWARDEE
Since joining the Supervised Homework Group (SHG) programme in 2017, Charlene has been providing valuable mentoring and homework guidance to her assigned student mentees. She is a highly regarded volunteer mentor known for her steady commitment and dedication to the students' welfare
As part of the programme, she organises fun and educational mass activities based on popular themes. These sessions were well-received by the students and it is evident that she has invested time to know them
With an appetite for learning, Charlene is on a constant quest to expand her knowledge and skills to benefit the students She has actively participated in training workshops and would do her own research on topics such as, working with students with AttentionDeficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and building rapport with students, to engage them well She would also tap on her experience and knowledge to support other volunteers in the programme.
Charlene has contributed significantly to the SHG programme. Aside from the weekly sessions, Charlene voluntarily took on additional responsibilities in the SHG programme including joining event committees and dedicating her personal time to design various SHGrelated items, such as the SHG Graduation ceremony and programme T-shirts. Her contributions have significantly enriched the SHG experience for both students and volunteers
Charlene’s sincere dedication towards the students is an inspiration!
I honestly never expected to be a SHG volunteer for such a long period of time, and boy did those years fly by It has been such a rewarding journey, and I am grateful to have had the chance to learn from other volunteers with different backgrounds I have also enjoyed interacting with the SHG students, who have given me new perspectives and hilarious moments over the years Looking forward to see how else I can contribute as a volunteer

Yee Rui was a young beneficiary of the kidsREAD programme and experienced firsthand the impact of the programme ’ s effort to promote literacy and a love of reading among children
As a volunteer with kidsREAD, Yee Rui has demonstrated exceptional dedication and enthusiasm She prepares for the weekly session beforehand and would take the initiative to modify the activities to better engage the children During the sessions, she is attentive to the children and would prioritise their learning through fun activities
Apart from the weekly kidsREAD sessions, she was also a mentor in the Upper Class programme, offering weekly one-hour English coaching sessions to a P3 student She would prepare customised materials for the student and would patiently provide guidance and support With Yee Rui’s mentoring and encouragement, this student eventually passed his English during PSLE!
Yee Rui is always willing to extend a helping hand Beyond her commitment to the kidsREAD programme, she has also helped in other projects such as the ‘Healthy Living Passport Programme’ where she took on the role of a befriender to a family Throughout the six sessions, she would explain the information and tips and encourage the family to apply them at home She has demonstrated her adaptability, capabilities, and versatility through her involvement in various projects and activities
Yee Rui’s story is one of unwavering commitment to giving back She continues to inspire young minds and ignite the joy of reading in them
Receiving the Commendation Award this year is a humbling reminder of my journey with CDAC Each session, I step in hoping to inspire young minds, but invariably, it is their genuine laughter, questions, and unique perspectives that enrich me We often believe, as volunteers, that we're the ones giving – but truthfully, the lessons and joy I gain from these bright souls are immeasurable To my fellow volunteers: never underestimate the impact you make and the light you bring into someone's life Always remember, in the act of giving, we receive tenfold.

He prepares well for each session and is always ready to jump in to cover for other sessions when there is a shortage of manpower. The children’s active participation during the reading sessions is a testament to him knowing the students and the effort put into crafting the activities The activities not only capture the students’ attention but engages their creativity resulting in students producing beautiful works

Eugene is also part of the core team which initiated the Joy Read Club programme in 2019. The programme is an extension of the kidsREAD programme and aims to inspire and deepen students’ interest in reading The team met multiple times to draw up lesson plans, carefully select books and brainstormed on learning activities. The students in the programme were seen to be actively participating and feedback from parents have been positive

Chay Hua has been a Family Befriender for over 10 years and has displayed strong commitment to our beneficiaries An anchor family befriender in the Single Parents Support Group in the recent years, she has built strong relationships with the clients she has been assigned to befriend and is a pillar of support to them
She creates a safe and non-judgemental space for clients to share their concerns, feelings, and experiences She also works with clients to set achievable goals and milestones, helping clients develop action plans to work towards positive change
As a testament to her empathy, one of her case clients shared with CDAC that Chay Hua was like a “saviour” to her as she contacted her at the right moment when she most needed a listening ear
Chay Hua is always ready to help and would go the extra mile She would find out more information on the available government schemes and community resources in her own time so that she could share the information with clients in need.
Besides committing as a family befriender, Chay Hua has also supported programmes for seniors, such as conducting News Sharing sessions As an experienced befriender, she also willingly shares her experiences and views with fellow befrienders so that everyone would be able to discuss, learn and benefit as whole.
Her actions are driven by a genuine desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, uplifting the families she befriends
I am pleasantly surprised to receive the Commendation Award. What have I done to deserve this?
Since I became a CDAC volunteer, I encountered “strangers” on the street thanking me for inspiring her to become a hairdresser; another person shared that after counselling, her child has became more tamed; I also met a senior asking when will I start a new Hanyu Pinyin class.
All these encounters have made my life more fruitful

VOLUNTEER (TEAM) AWARDEE PROJECT YOUTH CAN SHINE
Project YOUth Can Shine (PYCS) was piloted in 2018 Since then, this batch of volunteers have been committing on a weekly basis, proactively taking on the role of mentors to the students Embodying dedication and commitment, they work cohesively together to prioritise students’ growth They support one another and tap on each other’s strength to ensure that no student is left without help and they constantly strive to improve
These volunteers go above and beyond, even offering academic support during the school holidays and creating opportunities for bonding and strategic play They strive to provide unique experiences to students, bringing in their own connections and collaborating with industry practitioners. The volunteers would also report to the centre earlier to engage the youth in activities before the start of the programme
Activities for the programme are planned thematically, covering subjects like financial literacy and sustainability Volunteers also inject the element of play and fun into these activities to engage the students One such example was when the team brough students on a learning journey to the supermarket to teach the students the concept of budgeting This was then followed by a cooking activity Volunteers even brought their own home appliances to support the activity
When PYCS was set up in a new centre in 2022, this team of volunteers helped with coaching and guiding new volunteers, sharing tips on how to build rapport with students
The volunteers in Project Youth Can Shine at CDAC@ Bedok are an inspiring example of how dedication and a collaborative spirit can transform the lives of students and create a positive impact in the community
