The patient panels on both the pediatric and adult side and Meet-the-Peers sessions were well-appreciated by the attendees. This is a four-day academic, CME-accredited conference by the university of Colorado, School of Medicine and next year’s dates are July 13-16, 2023.

Our 31st annual Practical Ways to Achieve Targets in Diabetes Care (ATDC) conference occurred on July 20-24 and was once again a great success. This annual course has been an integral part of education and case-based study of upcoming and new diabetes technology and is designed to help healthcare providers caring for patients with diabetes that include: endocrinologists, physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and certified diabetes educators (CDCES). We hosted 517 attendees who registered for the conference that represented 43 US states and 7 countries this year. The program this year highlighted the ever-increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, issues related to non-alcoholic steatosis hepatitis (NASH) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and new technologies in managing insulin-requiring patients with type 1 and/or type 2 diabetes. Since the FDA recently approved tirezaptide (Mounjaro) for people with type 2 diabetes, there were two sessions on the role of GLP analogs (alone or in combination with GIP, commonly referred to as twincretins) in improving glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes and its emerging role in weight loss and NASH and NAFLD.

ATDC WRAPUP ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE

In the technology area, there were two plenaries on emerging data on hybrid closed-loop systems (HCL) and new continuous glucose monitors (CGM). The pathophysiology of diabetic kidney disease was discussed in detail due to emerging evidence of the role of SGLT-1 inhibitors, finerenone (Krendia), and GLP analogs in various stages of kidney disease. The last day of the conference on Sunday morning was dedicated to prevention and/or cure for Type 1 diabetes. The lectures included strong evidence for predicting T1D by measuring antibodies and way to possibly prevent T1D. The discussion was around the new drug Teplizumab which is likely to get approval by the FDA later this year and how it might delay the onset of T1D in antibody positive person who are at high risk of getting T1D.

He is survived by his wife, also an accomplished physician, Dr. Robin Slover, his four children and 21 grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, mentees, clinical and research staff and by his patients and their families.

During his long career, Dr. Slover had a major impact on pediatric endocrinology and diabetes. He served as a mentor and educator for hundreds of faculty, fellows, residents and students. He will be remembered as a compassionate physician by thousands of patients and their families. His research improved clinical care of diabetes and gained him recognition at the international level.

At the Barbara Davis Center, Dr. Slover was known for his compassion, commitment to the highest level of patient care and teaching of trainees as well as his contributions in clinical research After presiding over the Korea mission for his church in 1999-2002, he returned to the Barbara Davis Center and engaged in clinical care, clinical research, and administrative roles. His clinical research most recently focused on the implementation of diabetes technology and the artificial pancreas to benefit pediatric and young adult patients with type 1 diabetes. He served as the site principal investigator for several studies at the Barbara Davis Center including pre-pivotal and pivotal trials of hybrid closed loop systems in children as young as age 8 years. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our faculty member, colleague and friend, Dr. Robert H. Slover II. Dr. Slover passed away on Friday, August 5, 2022.

Dr. Slover completed his medical degree from the University of Utah in 1975. He did a residency in Pediatrics at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center followed by fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. At the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, he served as the Chief of Pediatric Services and of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes from 1982-1994. As a regional consultant for 16 states, he provided guidance for pediatric endocrine and diabetes management for many military families during this time.

-R. Paul Wadwa, MD

Prior to joining the Barbara Davis Center in 1994, he contributed 20 years of service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

From 2011 to 2021. Dr. Slover served as the Director of the Barbara Davis Center Pediatric Clinic and was the initial holder of the Wagner Family Chair in Childhood Diabetes. He was a Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Colorado School of Medicine. During his time as director, the division doubled its clinical and research operations.

The impact he has had during his career will continue to benefit countless colleagues, trainees, patients, and families for many years to come.

the point of 1 Sweet Cruise was for families to have a relaxing vacation surrounded by people who would understand what they were going through daily. Anyone who has or cares for someone with Type 1 Diabetes understands the unique challenge of every day, and the hesitancy to take that challenge on vacation with them. 1 Sweet Cruise allowed families to not just enjoy an amazing Alaskan adventure, but to connect with people from across the country at different places in their own diabetes journey.

FAMILY FUN AND NEW FRIENDS

1 SWEET CRUISE

Take for instance, the group of kids we had, some diabetic, some siblings of diabetics, who came together one night and just had fun being kids, riding the bumper cars, exploring the ship, picking up other kids along the way and just generally having safe fun. These same kids rallied together when one lost a precious souvenir, going to great lengths to get it back.

When we had the idea for a Type 1 Diabetes family cruise in May 2019, we had no idea it would take 3 years to set sail, but once we did, it was an adventure like no Inspiredother!bythe

Grand Adventure Family Camp hosted by the Shining Stars Foundation, we wanted to start a similar opportunity for families dealing with Type 1 Diabetes. What started as a small idea soon exploded into 75 people booked for our 1st annual 1 Sweet Cruise in June 2020. We all know what happened to that one. Not to be dissuaded, we booked another 45 people for June 2021 only to be thwarted by a new variant and canceled again. Finally, on June 20, 2022, we set sail on our third first annual 1 Sweet Cruise with 54 excited cruisers, all connected to someone with Type 1 AllDiabetes.along,

Or the girl spotted in the elevator, not a member of our group but wearing a pump, who became a new friend instantly. Her story of living in a diabetes bubble, with no one around her who was like her, made all of us immediately adopt her, and she went home with new friends and hope that she wasn’t alone in all of this. Finally, on our group tour to Mendenhall Glacier there was a hike to the waterfall. The day was warm, and the hike is two miles round trip. On our way back one member of our group was on the side of the trail, resting and looking concerned. She had forgotten her glucose tabs and was running low. Our daughter pulls out her backpack and produces an easter egg filled with skittles. As we are standing there, another Dexcom goes off nearby and another one of our group stops for a sugar break. No one else would understand why we were all on the side of the trail eating Skittles™

We are hoping that this becomes not just an annual event, but an opportunity to meet up every year with people from before and create lasting friendships while lounging on a cruise ship.

Every reservation earns a donation to the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. This year, in addition to families coming together for a great vacation, we raised over $1,000 for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. You can help us next year make that donation even larger and more significant for the Barbara Davis Center.

We offer travel insurance to cover any surprises, fare watch to monitor pricing and drop your price if there is a significant drop, pre and post cruise hotel arrangements, on board group activities and one special group excursion (still to be determined).

If you want to join us, check out www.1sweetcruise. com and request a quote. Bring just your family, or bring the whole neighborhood, but come and be a part of an adventure where someone is always sure to have some emergency Skittles™.

For those who have never cruised with diabetes before, every cruise ship has a full medical staff 24-7, as well as our own group of families ready and willing to lend a hand or a vial of insulin. We meet with medical, culinary, housekeeping and kids’ staff beforehand to ensure everyone is not just aware of our group, but ready for our unique needs.

Looking forward, the Don’t Sugar Coat It team is excited to keep building community relationships and hosting events to generate funds for Children's Diabetes Foundation. The best way to follow and keep up to date with them is to join their social media on Facebook and Instagram (links below)

Years later, he found himself in a position to help the diabetic community by starting Don’t Sugar Coat It. Originally their goal was to generate funds to benefit people affected by type 1 diabetes and get the community involved with a fun, familyoriented event.

Don’t Sugar Coat It is a fundraising organization that helps benefit organizations like Children’s Diabetes Foundation. Nick Salas and his family started the organization in 2017. Nick is a Colorado native with most of his immediate family with him in the state. He considers himself very fortunate with a supportive family that made sure he was always able to get the care he needed. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) when he was 3 years old. The onset and diagnosis of T1D may be a scary time for not only the person affected, but their families to. Shortly after his diagnosis he was referred to the Barbara Davis Center. He has been a patient there ever since.

Recently, they held their annual 5k fundraiser in Highlands Ranch, CO. With 160 registrants, this was their largest event to date. The 5k fun runs include event shirts, food, drinks, raffle prizes and more! Their following has grown with every event they host. What originally started as a small one-time event has become a large following of supporters and community involvement. Their mission has expanded to not only generating funds, but also spreading awareness and engaging the community to help better benefit the individuals and families affected by type 1 diabetes.

5K Run/Walk

Back in 2017 Don’t Sugar Coat It held its first 5k fun run fundraiser. With a participant attendance of about 50 people, they raised $3,000. They have held multiple events every year since then with growing attendance and more funds raised. They hold 5k fundraisers, brewery events, boot camps, and more mostly in the Denver metropolitan area.

• Going to a friend's house in the middle of the nightto give a shot due to a high blood sugar

• Sitting on the sidelines at practice because a coach didn't take their diabetes seriously

• Chaperoning many a field trip

A MOTHER'S PERSPECTIVE

20

By Julie Feiten

We are a family .... one daughter, Emily, and three sons, Jonny, Ben and Gabe. Our 3 sons all have Type 1 diabetes. Jonny was diagnosed when he was two years old. Seven years later, Gabe, our youngest, was diagnosed at 11 months and Ben was diagnosed two months after Gabe at two-and-a-half. Needless to say, this was a challenge! As a mother, I asked myself, how can I raise our sons in a way that they don't hate their disease? How do I teach them to be compliant and take their diabetes seriously? How can I raise our sons with an attitude that they can do anything they put their minds to?

• I tried to never interrupt their activity, especially when they were young, to do finger pokes, shots, or snacks, I would simply go to them whenever possible and be as quick as I could to do a finger poke, shot or present a snack

• Watching from the bleachers when the coach isn't playing your son, but your son is disconnected from his pump and needs a bolus

NEWSDIABETES

• I tried to refrain from negativity

• Training and trusting other parents (some "got it" some didn't)

• Having appropriate snacks in case the snack family brings something your son shouldn't have

Reflecting on it now...

Our Story

• I tried to never let them see me sweat (there were plenty of tears and frustration, but in private)

I let them go to play dates, birthday parties, sleepovers, field trips and college, which meant...

I let them participate in sports, which meant...

• Being in the background at parties to monitor their exercise and sugar intake

Sleeping on your back so your ears were wide open to hear if one of the boys cried due to low blood sugar

Thediabetes!advancements

Basal rates can be easily adjusted

Timing mealtime and snacks to avoid lows when insulin is peaking Meals and snacks don't have to be timed, you can bolus when eating

Manually writing every blood sugar in a binder because glucometers didn't have memory

Blood ketone monitoring systems (more accurate)

Mixing two types of insulin in each shot to peak at different times

Insulin pumps

Checking urine for Ketones (not as accurate)

Color-coded pages for our boys and up to 7 or 8 pokes per boy, per day

Carrying insulin and syringes everywhere and having to find safe and clean places to administer the shots

Continuous Glucose monitoring systems Apps for family members to get alarms for lows

THEN NOW

Trying to get your young and picky eater to eat something when they don't want to in order to avoid lows when insulin is peaking

Insulin pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitors communicate with each other and provide greater flexibility and safety

Administering at least two shots per boy per day

With pumps and insulin pens, insulin can be administered anytime/ anywhere

Track blood sugars and BS averages with Glucometers and apps

21 Imagine

Our boys are now 34, 28 and 26 and are fortunately doing very well! We have seen unbelievable advancements since they were diagnosed. We didn't have insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors, fast-acting insulin, closed loop systems, insulin pens, blood ketone monitoring systems, cell phones or nutrition labels! My point in saying all this is to encourage you to try to use as many of these advancements as you have available to you. They really can make a HUGE difference in managing your child's

Built-in alarms to warn of highs and lows, Find my Friends app to find your child's location

that were made in the management of our sons' diabetes have been remarkable. Rest assured that there will be many more innovative solutions in the years to come. For now, rely on the experts in your community or the clinicians and staff at the Barbara Davis Center. Call upon your family and friends for support and find some time for yourselves. Send your kids to diabetes camp (Camp Colorado) so they can form relationships with other kids, and they can learn how to take more responsibility for their diabetes.

TUMBLING

WITH TYPE 1

By Ellie Hampton, 10 years old

CIRCLEWINNER'S

Coach Reshea: Having Ellie in the gym has been an absolute joy. She does not let the fact that she is diabetic stop her from achieving her goals. If anything, it pushes her even more. She is open and honest with her Flipside peers when they ask questions about her devices and now when Dexcom beeps everyone tells Ellie to “chug a juice and get back to work.” Even during competitions, I have seen her step out of her shell and explain to kids, and coaches, who she’s never met what her devices are or why she is drinking a juice box before doing backflips down the mat! Her confidence and energy is contagious! I know I speak for all of us at Flipside when I say that this young lady is going places, and we are beyond proud of her and humbled to be part of her journey!

22 Like my mother and my grandmother before me, I started tumbling when I was 3. Throughout pre-diagnosis, I was just like any other kid without a care in the world. I was making new friends and learning a new hobby that I have grown to love. Tumbling for me has become a part of my life that makes me very happy and excited but has also had its challenges throughout my diagnosis. Diabetes is a struggle with normal daily activities but even more so with any type of physical activity. My experience with it is that if my blood sugar is low I feel shaky, my vision changes and I have a lack of energy and if I am too high I have a hard time focusing and feel exhausted. This makes it more of a challenge when I am tumbling or playing any sport. Due to my current skill level at tumbling which involves back flips and no handed tricks, I really have to listen to my body and my dexcom to not put myself at risk for injury. My supplies are always with me and are a constant in my life. These are necessary, especially with these types of activities. I am fortunate to have teachers and coaches who support and educate themselves to help me be successful in a sport that I love. Tumbling has taught me that I can do anything that I put my mind to regardless of my diagnosis. No matter how my blood sugar has affected me that day, I continue to participate and give it my all. Tumbling for me is an escape that allows me to fly through the air and be free of challenges if only for a short time.
